New Feature: Member World Map (Automatic)

I have added a feature allowing you to view a map of the locations of all members currently online on GFF and a map of all GFF members (based on where they last logged on from). This information is built from the GeoLite City database which uses IP information to determine location.

The maps are updated every fifteen minutes and can be found on the Who's Online page and under Quick Links > Member World Map on the top navbar. Check it out!

Kaiten Mar 15, 2006 02:10 PM

Awesome! It looks like the US and Europe are represented very well, what's with the Chinese members? I thought China wouldn't let their people go to places like GFF...

seanne Mar 15, 2006 02:30 PM

Interesting feature.

Though there seems to be a bug resulting in it being impossible to, when hovering over one of the images, use the horizontal scrollbar. Which means that, atleast on this computer, a chunck of the map will be unviewable when zoomed in.

also, who the heck is it that lives on Tasmania? =D

As you can see they're all along the ocean, ready to escape at a moment's notice~

IdleChill Mar 15, 2006 02:53 PM

Can we get names up there as well?

russ Mar 15, 2006 02:54 PM

I see that one other Alabamian is logged on right now.

Neo-Zacar Mar 15, 2006 03:23 PM

It's nice. But certain dots are at.. unexpected locations. That's actually what makes it so nice >_>

Immortal Mar 15, 2006 03:42 PM

Ok so there's like 10 fucking people online from Southern Arizona. Why am I not surprised?

Kilroy Mar 15, 2006 03:55 PM

Sweet feature. I could see myself using this when bored!

Crownprincess Mary of Denmark?

Megalith Mar 15, 2006 04:06 PM

So where's the airship.

Rydia Mar 15, 2006 04:34 PM

Interesting feature. Would it be possible to display usernames just by pointing to a dot?

Tube Mar 15, 2006 04:47 PM

Now make one based on users' flags. Gotta make sure I have this continent to myself.

Yes, let's make it easier for people to stalk my ISP.

Alot of those dots are really close together... Would be hard finding someone in a very GFF populated area.

It's a nice feature though, there's a pretty good amount of members in the Philippines also.

I poked it and it made a sad sound Mar 15, 2006 05:53 PM

Pffth. Usernames. Man, that map is interesting enough for me to watch it every 15 minutes.

LOOK at where people are logged on from. Who the hell is way up there near Churchill, Manitoba on the bay? WOW.

AWESOME feature. I love it.

No. Hard Pass. Mar 15, 2006 06:28 PM

I just assume Sassafrass is that little dot, right there in the middle... by the bowels of hell. Sass is from bowels.

wvlfpvp Mar 15, 2006 06:39 PM

This is freakin' neat, but is there any way to make it zoom in further? I'd love to zoom in to a highly populated area and see how the dots spread out.

nazpyro Mar 16, 2006 03:10 AM

That's cool. Still waiting on the arcade. :p

Right now, I see 3 people logged in from the Philippines. I bet they don't have flags.

Fjordor Mar 16, 2006 03:32 AM

Woah, that is friggin sweet.
Awesome addition bobo.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Mar 16, 2006 08:00 AM

Nice feature. There seem to be a lot of people logged in in southern Englan, given that the majority of English members I know about are northerners.

Saying that, my monitor has pretty poo resolution so they could just be big dots...

Kairyu Mar 17, 2006 01:28 PM

Cool feature, but I can't see myself and I must've been online for at least the past hour ._.

Still, I would rather have my chocopie =p.

Isn't the location based on the user's ip address and not the flag you selected? Unless your isp really is in Antarctica..

?? Of course it is. I mean what the heck, we couldn't add Yuktobania and Osea flags if it wasn't =o

Megalith Mar 17, 2006 01:32 PM

Requesting world map to be changed to:

Oh, I see. Disregard my last post then!

*Though I was talking about bobo's world map locator thingie-mabobber. He just said the location is based on a user's ip.*

Why Am I Allowed to Have Gray Paint Mar 23, 2006 12:05 AM

It's great and everything, but would it be possible to fix it so that when you mouseover the map, it doesn't push the list of members down suddenly? The way it jiggles is so annoying, in the same way that some MySpace types abuse the power of CSS and when you mouseover a link, it doubles in font size and tears apart the table >_<.

Also, is it possible to set the Who's Online list page size to something bigger, like in the old GFF? If this was a profile preference setting then that would be fine too.

map car man words telling me to do things Mar 23, 2006 05:09 AM

Neat, makes me wish I could click on the dots and see who it is.

What exactly are these for.

Various things.

Scarletdeath Mar 23, 2006 06:50 AM

That is one looong article by the way. They even used the Harvard referencing method.

After reading that, I still don't see a reason for these bots to be included in the "who's online" list. Won't that be a waste of resources? If not, then forget it.

Lord Styphon Mar 23, 2006 07:02 AM

The search bots are grouped under the guests as far as Who's Online goes, and since they're "browsing" the board, there's no reason for them not to be included. That and it helps people keep track of just who (or what) is browsing the board at any given time; there are undoubtedly people who are interested in that information, since it wouldn't be included in the software otherwise.

I second the motion!
I guess, I'll try that one naz.
Aztig!
One question, how do I do that? Sorry :p
I want that flashing thing.

pompadork Apr 20, 2006 01:32 AM

This might just be my extreme colour blindness, but are the dots really difficult for anyone to see? It might just be me though, so yeah.

Grundlefield Earth Apr 20, 2006 02:17 AM

No it is your COLOR blindness. Red/green is hard to distinguish for certain nubs.

UltimaIchijouji Apr 22, 2006 01:54 PM

Bobo, the maps need to not get gigantic on mouseover. The dots need to not be red (not a sold color maybe?), and they need to tell who each user is.

The above will without doubt eternalize this mod.
