Guilty Pleasures

Do your friends make fun of you for driving an Echo? Do they look at you funny when you start jamming to the Backstreet Boys? Do people roll their eyes when they find out that you enjoy watching "cartoons" (anime)? Do you have a particular habit, hobby or interest that others might find strange or just not understand? What are your guilty pleasures?

Many of my friends just don't understand how I can listen to and enjoy the artist Pink. I'll admit, I some times even feel embarassed that I listen to her stuff. I really shouldn't though - her music is fun. Ya, so it's Pop (with R&B or rock influences depending on the song), but it also sounds good.

How about you?

Midna Feb 11, 2007 02:29 PM

Two embarrassing guilty pleasures I have are:

1. I still on occasion listen to Wannabe by the Spice Girls.

2. I watch Desperate Housewives every single week.

I'm not really sure which one is worse, but I suspect Desperate Housewives is because I actually make an effort to keep up with the show.

Paco Feb 11, 2007 02:34 PM

Anime is definitely one of mine. The vast majority of my friends hate anime and one of them says, "I refuse to watch cartoons made by people who hate themselves so much. Why else would they draw their cartoons with such huge eyes? It's because they WISH they had big eyes like that!". (As you can imagine, he's A HIT at parties. :/) Fuck what they heard. If they can't find a good story just because they refuse to see past a "cartoon" medium then it's their loss. I'm not gonna beg niggas left and right.

Another one is 80's music. I LOVE 80's pop music to a fault and goddamnit you should see how often my younger cousins make fun of me for listening to Tears for Fears, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Men At Work, Baltimora or *gasp* THE CURE. Man, fuck all ya'll. They revolutionized music from the 70's to the 90's and you cocksuckers not only missed it, but crack jokes at those of us who were lucky enough to be in the middle of it. FUCK WHAT YOU HEARD.

Oh yeah... I um... I uh... I watch Grey's Anatomy every week. >_>

I know, but in my defense it's only on occasion.

Also, I'm with you on the 80's music, but I never considered it a guilty pleasure. It will always have a special place in my heart.

P.S. Who is Baltimora?

You're hopeless, you know that? <3

Midna Feb 11, 2007 02:57 PM

Ah, okay. I know the song of course, just not the name of the band. It's hard keeping track of all those one it wonders.

EDIT: You mock me for Wannabe when you listen to that song? GLASS HOUSES, SIR!

I'd honestly say that gamingforce is my guilty pleasure. My friends seriously do not understand, you have no idea...

Oh, I think most of us do. "You made friends on an internet discussion forum? Okay..."

Paco Feb 11, 2007 04:13 PM

I still get people who compare this to a "nerd version of MySpace". Can someone tell me where they'd gather this comparison from?

Alice, baby... I'm looking at YOU.

Gechmir Feb 11, 2007 05:06 PM

One involves losers who huddle together for attention on the internet since they fail at life... And the other is a Gaming forum =o Hmm!

GFF is a guilty pleasure, easily. I don't tell anyone about my online life, whether it involve the music I download or the sites I frequent. I don't even tell anyone I'm a gamer or a fan of anime. Despite all this, I live a very pleasing social life =3 I'm hardly an introvert. I just see this as a dark side. I only tell folks I trust.

But yeah, 80s music is hardly a guilty pleasure =D EVERYONE loves 80s music Enceph~ Might be a guilty pleasure around here, but I love country music (nobody else does, really). I also fancy furry porn!

PiccoloNamek Feb 11, 2007 05:51 PM

Me: Hey, check these out!

Friend: Cool, where did you get these? They sound great!

Me: I, uh, ordered them online!

Friend: Neat, how much did they cost?

Me: ...um... $350?

Friend: WHAT!? $350? For headphones? You're crazy!

:(

Paco Feb 11, 2007 05:53 PM

Your friends are audio troglodytes.

That reminds me - I'm going to have to figure out how to get the best sound out of my MacBook Pro once I buy one in the fall. Looks like I'm going to be splurging on an amp and a pair of cans (to go along with my Shure e4Gs).

I also get weird looks when I tell people that I paid $200 US for my headphones. People just don't understand why I'm so obssessed with audio quality.

PiccoloNamek Feb 11, 2007 06:21 PM

OT: I recommend the HeadRoom Total Bithead amp/DAC combo if you're using a laptop.

Someone mentioned that this thread isn't really Community Commons material, and I'm inclined to agree.

So, I'm moving it to General Discussion.

It's a close call, but this subject isn't quite CC worthy as much as it is GD.

Gixah Feb 11, 2007 07:11 PM

Three guilty pleasures:

Song: "I Write Sins, Not Tragedies" by Panic! At the Disco. It is simultaneously catchy and obnoxious.

TV Show: Gilmore Girls. I don't know what people's problems with this show are beyond the overly girlie theme song.

Movie: The Karate Kid, Part II. The first one is great, the third one is great for nonstop laughs, but people seem to shrug off the second one. I think the ice-breaking scene is worth the price of admission, and the idea that people know a New Jersey/California kid for two minutes before they decide they want to kick his ass is just gold.

Bernard Black Feb 11, 2007 07:12 PM

Neighbours. I used to be so bloody arrogant about soaps, because I never used to watch them and considered them to be the sputum in the toilet bowl of tv, but now I'm addicted to it :(

EDIT: Music-wise, Teenagers by MCR. I hate everything else they've ever produced but this song is so damn catchy I can't help but sing along. Hopefully my terrible voice slanders their name >.>

Gechmir Feb 11, 2007 07:36 PM

looool. Headphones. I use cheapo ones. I've got a rustic sound card and $20 headphones >__>

But part of me wants to get some top of the line wireless Sennhausers (sp?). I want headphones that can simulate surround sound! =D

Krelian Feb 11, 2007 08:10 PM

Not a guilty pleasure at all - Probably a proud one - But many people I know balk at the fact I listen to metal because it's "just a lot of screaming about death, right?" and VGM because it's "just beeping and booping and really shitty boring music, right?". Argh.

Guilty pleasures I'd rather people don't know about much:

- GFF
- Walking around alone with headphones
- Bits and pieces of anime
- Wearing women's clothing

Ceft Feb 11, 2007 08:17 PM

People don't understand how I can be so into video games and VGM (especially my parents, but a lot of other ppl too, including my very few friends). They especially don't understand how I can be such a fanboy of Rockman and Sonic. Eh, I'm used to it though.

Yeldarb Feb 11, 2007 08:47 PM

What I can't understand is why many kids my age in this day and age don't appreciate the roots of modern art and music.

So it would be a regular day at school and some annoying person that I don't know decides to speak to just bug me. Why can't they speak about something intellegent or worth talking about. Anyway they sometimes ask me what kind of music I like. I usually never respond but I sometimes humor them and say I like Classical. Then they proceed to freak out and say what a weirdo I am, and they haven't even realised 1/3 of the weirdness I contain.

So I'm usually very reluctant to tell anyone that I like classical music at my school since they just seem to be asimilationists doing the same thing as everyone else.

I'm also very reluctant to tell anyone that I am into hardcore video games(well since everyone is into vgames but they are just too mainstream) and anime since the only ones are noobs that think that Naruto is the best thing that happen to the world since the wheel.

I guess it is all my fault for being too judgemental. :judge:

Yeah, that's mine as well.

Incidentally, I just listened to that Baltimora song while watching the rape scene at the beginning of Ichi The Killer. Interesting viewing experience.

Helloween Feb 11, 2007 09:53 PM

Rob Zombie, Rammstein, Tanzwut, In Extremo, Eminem, and video game music. Those are the kinds of music i get the most weird looks for.

I am one of two people in my group of friends who drinks rum. That has sort of reached the level of guilty pleasure among my circle of friends. Everyone else drinks Gin. I can't stand the stuff.

Probably also the fact that i listen to metal at all. I'm one of the only people i know who listens to the bands i listen to. It makes driving with friends really hard, because everyone's taste is completley different than mine. And if i'm the one driving, i basically get nothing but complaints, and condescending comments

Passenger "We're gonna turn the music off now k?"

Me "Why?"

Passenger "Because this music isn't for everybody. Here, we're gonna listen to this stuff now"

Me *Cringes at the sounds of Jesse McCartney*

Dekoa Feb 11, 2007 09:53 PM

I guess I have a few Guilty Pleasures.

One is fantacising. When I think of things that seem cool (like being an assasin or probably using magic), those thoughts tend to bleed through to my body motion. Even to the point to were I carry an extra long screwdriver around at work.

Friend: Why are you carrying that screwdriver around Dekoa?
Me: (embarrased) Oh nothing nothing. I just uhh, uhhhhh.....
Friend: You can't do magic Dekoa, stop pretending to be Harry Potter.
Me: I don't do that, I just need to keep my hand active so I'm not as bored.

Another would probably be along the same lines only with music and dancing. I get weird looks for that sometimes.

JackTheRipper Feb 11, 2007 09:53 PM

I could say that GFF is a guilty pleasure. My friends don't go on message boards, and if I showed them this, they'd be like '"What the fuck?"

I also enjoy listening to "Every time we touch" by Cascada... it so catchy!!

Dee Feb 11, 2007 09:59 PM

I enjoy karaoking to Backstreet Boys. Hey, they've got some good tunes back in the day. And I also enjoy karaoking to Madonna, especially "Like a Prayer". There's nothing wrong with 80's mainstream music... heck I had Journey ringtones for an entire semester.

Sennheiser. :eye: And don't bother with wireless headphones, they will never be as good as wired headphones. And don't bother with surround-sound headphones, they all suck. The best way to experience surround-sound with headphones is to listen to binaural recordings, or in the case of movies, use the Dolby Headphone track.

Gechmir Feb 11, 2007 10:39 PM

Sennheiser, Sennhauser, wutevah...

By the time I decide to dish out enough money for such a thing, I'm sure surround sound will work better on 'em =p

A-Fucking-Men

Not only good music, but the fucking best. The sound of a synthesizer backing some amazing vocals makes my nipples hard.

SpaceOddity Feb 11, 2007 11:28 PM

An old guilty pleasure of mine used to be all of those trashy, Z-list celebrity reality shows on VH1. I just couldn't get enough of The Surreal Life, Celebrity Fit Club and other trash like that. Once I realized I was probably losing brain cells, I kicked the habit. LOL.

Dojomaster Feb 11, 2007 11:33 PM

Eurodance

Really cheesy, fun dance music that's made in Germany and sold in Japan.

My guilty pleasures:

1. Cheaters - the tv show that celebrates monogamy and very public, humiliating confrontations

2. Us Weekly - sometime I need to just zone out.

That show is awful! I did see it once when there was a guy who caught his gf cheating. They bust in in her, and she's got her lover tied to the bed or something. The lover was another chick, and the guy was still upset.

Don't most guys wish for that sort of thing?

Muzza Feb 12, 2007 02:50 AM

The only one I can think of at the moment isn't video game music but a form of it: dating sim/visual novel music. It's not often I listen to it, but when I do, I regard it as a guilty (cheerful) pleasure. ^_^

I have many guilty pleasures that connect to nostalgia but I can't name any specifics. Y'know, once in a while I'll watch a show I used to watch when I was younger. (only when I have spare time, though. I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it. >_>)

DragoonKain Feb 12, 2007 04:10 AM

Do sexual fetishes count? I don't really have any guilty pleasures entertainment-wise. I'm not ashamed of anything I like whether a lot of people like it or I'm the only person in the world that does.

But I do have some sexual fetishes that not all women would be into. Nothing sick that would get me arrested or anything, but I'm going to keep this thread PG13.

Truth. Oh, yeah, that was a guilty pleasure, and if you wanna loosely bring "was" into the present tense...

Domino Feb 12, 2007 12:21 PM

One of my guilty pleasures is VGM. When people ask me what I'm listening to on my MP3 player I always tell them that it is the radio. They wouldn't understand if I told them anyway, so I may as well keep it to myself.

I'm also into this as well, but I don't tell anyone because I'm embarrassed about it. People are surprised that I know what is going on in this soap though when they start talking about it at work. I'm not the sort of person that you would expect to watch this sort of thing, which leads to me getting some funny looks off people when I join in the conversations that they have at work.

Voyeuristic pleasures involving bunny rabbits committing suicide.

And melting cheddar cheese on white rice for dinner.

Count me in on that as well. I didn't watch The Surreal Life religiously, but it did lead me to watching the HILARIOUS My Fair Brady. I do genuinely enjoy Hogan Knows Best!

And as far as this topic is going, count me in also in the realm of VGM geekdom.
