What is your Favorite PC game EVER?
I was just intrested in knowing what is everyones favorite pc game they have ever played, like mmo or rpg?
:edgarrock: |
Diablo II, hands down. It may not be the bast game out there currently, but it has given me more enjoyment than any other game ever. Best $60 I ever spent (including the expansion).
|
Unreal Tournament '99 & '04. I know it's not an MMO or an RPG but I don't have the patience to play thoes games therefore my favoruite PC games are the two above, but if I had to pick one I'd say UT2K4 because the community and the add-ons are endless.
If I did have to choose an RPG though, I'd say Morrowind, due to how huge the game is, PLUS the community add-ons. |
The best pc game ever made is Strike Commander, especially the enhanced cd version. Never before or since has such an accurate simulation model been combined with such a gripping storyline. I only wish I could get the damn thing to work on Windows.
Close runners up are Ultima 7, UFO:Enemy Unknown and the original Quake. |
Diablo 2 as well. So much addiction / fast speed of playing / item collection.
Starcraft was a very, very close 2nd. |
shouldn't this be in PC gaming?
Anyways, my favourite is for darn sure Disciples II: Dark Prophecy. I don't think i've ever played a game that has hooked me more. Even with starcraft i would have to stop playing for a while after extended play, but with Disciples, i've been known to play for up to 5 hours at a time. |
My favorite PC game of ALL TIME:
http://adeptsoftware.com/jetpack/advert.gif It had the first level editor I ever used, and was the simplest and most versatile ones I ever played with. Gameplay was simple, mostly platforming, But the levels you could create were limited by your imagination only. The original 100 levels could be made using the editor, which dosen't make them any more unique than a single custom level made by yourself. It's what got me appreciating level design for the first time. I must've made like 12,000 levels with this; some series, most standalone. It was fantastic. http://adeptsoftware.com/jetpack/game1.gif Now the game is Freeware (YES!!!) but it won't work on my PC (slits wrists) EDIT: Yes I copy 'n past'd this from another topic. |
Quote:
Grim Fandango, hands down. The finest adventure game ever and easily the best PC title. Fantastic design, superb writing and characters, wonderful soundtrack and atmosphere. |
1.Age of Empires(the original) - first game I ever got for PC, and still play it to this day.
2.Deus Ex - This is the best game I have ever played, other than Age of Empires, and is probably the most indepth shooter ever designed, sadly the sequel, while not horrible, wasn't very good, and eventually led the franchise to bankruptcy, I can only wait for Deus Ex: Source, which is apparently in the works[just rumours, nothing confirmed]. 3.Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight - I played the EVERLOVING CRAP out of this game back in the day, and it was just SO amazing at the time. I still play the offspring, such as Jedi Academy, which is fun but can't live up to the first game, which is unbelievable... 4.[TIE]Age of Empires 2/Starcraft - both these RTS games are amazing, and I was TOTALLY addicted to both at one time or another. 5.Counter-Strike: Source - for shear playability, this pick up and go shooter is maybe my most played game of all time, as I can just boot up and play online, and always find a good server with low ping on the map I want. There's my top five... |

EVER. What other game encourages you to drop bowling balls on cats so they go all demented and run off, setting off another ten bowling balls to fall on another ten cats? No other game! I would really like to see this series revived, but they'd probably turn it into a street racing game or something. |

Filled with more choices and customizability than you can shake a stick at. Also, it has a great story, great style, great action, great dialogue, great level design, and great music. The AI is a bit poor, but that can be forgiven in the face of all the positive qualities this game has. The bottom line is that this game is hella fun. The only other thing that can compare is System Shock 2. |
My favorite PC game has to be Worms: Armaggedon. The explosions! The replay value!
|
Age of Empires: II for me. I wasn't really much of a PC gamer, but, AOE was good..
|
Quote:
I just have two questions, are you part of Planet Deus Ex Forums at all, and where can I find a copy of System Shock 2? |
http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/5053/gabriel2ss.gif
Actually the entire series is amazing. Good puzzle design, great music, memorable characters with excellent dialogue and the perfect blend of the occult and real history. None of Sierra's "sudden death" syndrome, too. Of course, I have other favorite PC games EVER: Jagged Alliance 2, UFO (X-Com), Quest for Glory and Deus Ex are some of these. |
http://img93.imageshack.us/img93/635/4697yf.jpg
Not a very old game but i just love it so much. One of the main pts I love is the dialogue, his descriptions etc are just so beautifully written, he really puts me into the story. The first game was great too but MP2 really took the cake. |
Quote:
Problem is though, i never played Worms on the PC, i played it on 64. Man, good times though. I guess i should mention Warcraft 2 Tides of Darkness/Byond the Dark Portal, cause i wasted alot of my child hood on that one. it would most certainly be right next to Mario RPG on my most played list. It introduced me to the wonderful world of RTS games. |
Tie Fighter hands down for me is the all time best PC game. It is really dated these days in terms of graphics, but the gameplay and the story were top notch. And best of all it was Star Wars.
RTS genre would either be Warhammer Dawn of War. Best RTS ever as it is Warhammer 40k Strategy genre is the Civilization series. Sid Meier is a genius. FPS genre is a little tricky. For nostalgia sakes I have to give Doom and Doom 2 top billing. Sure the graphics suck now, and there was practically no story, but main the sleepless nights when that first came out. Then there is the RPG genre of which there is only one true champion. The gold box D&D games take the cake here. Curse of the Azure Bonds, Champions of Krynn and all the rest kept me busy for a couple of years. |
Damn, I just got System Shock 2, it is SO confusing, I gave up after a while, the whole psionics thing is crazy, there's like 40 of them, and all the chemicals, and inventory, and not knowing where to go in the labthing, and having all these weird hybrids attacking me, it's just weird. Also, there seems to be no structure really so far, everything is just chucked at you and it's REALLY CONFUSING, SOMEONE HELP!
|
It's really hard to choose my favorite PC Game.
I could say FFVII (just because it was ported to PC. but I won't because it's not fair to the others, so I'll say a few PC exclusive games) 1. Freelancer, what a good game, I played like crazy. I had for six months and never though I would like, but at the second I started playing it, I just couldn't stop it. 2. No One Lives Forever, this is basicly my favorite FPS, I'm just sad I haven't had time to play the second. 3. Unreal Tournament, when I read Slayer X favorite I just remembered how much fun I had playing this game. This is without doubt one of my favorite games. |
Quote:
anyway, 1. counter-strike - maybe not the best game or my favorite really, but i spend a lot of time playing it. 2. half-life 2 - 'nuff said 3. psychonauts 4. riven 5. ricochet |
Quote:
|
Mine would be Age of Empire II, I reallly enjoy playing this game, also I liked this campaing just because the story.
|
I could say some of the monkey island but it was actually on Amiga, so: quake 2 is the one I've played the most...
|
Favorite PC game of all time, huh? Hmm...
Thief 2. Definately. Thief 3 is a joke in comparison to the brilliance that was its predecessor. Thief 2 was the most engrossing game ive ever played, slinking in the shadows, silently, nabbing loot, blackjacking the unsuspecting guards and placing their limp bodies in a closet as to not alert the others to his predicament. MAN the late nights id make playing that game... |
Counter-Strike. Even if it does make me a massive douche.
If you can be lucky enough to find the right group of people and the right server, it can be something magical. |
Probably Counter-Strike or Counter-Strike Source because the in-game mods for them (Zombies or Superheroes anyone?) can make them quite fun and even playing in a fun server with friends, even if you are losing can be pretty fun.
|
Classic List:
Starcraft Deus Ex Modern List: UT2004 KOTOR/II I will explain for each choice: Deus Ex was a revolutionary title for me... it gave me a wide range of things to do, with actual consequences for doing so (Try to rob the bank, and security guards would appear, or whatever), along with a storyline that actually adapted to your choices, and let you decide how to procede (Kill the guards and gung-ho it in, or sneak around and stealth kill?) in many different situations. Too bad the sequel couldn't live up to the first game. Starcraft was one of the few games I would play just because it was that fun. The balance of power between the three races was excellent for its day, and the many hours I bled away on multiplayer give me warm memories now. I really wish they would make a Starcraft 2, or World of Starcraft even... a sci-fi balance to WoW. ----- KOTOR/II for me was a unique take on both how RPGs operated and showcased a new side to the Star Wars Mythos. I have to give an edge to the second game for its overall better presentation (Sans the ending). The killer spoiler of the first game was also a nice touch. The combat system was partiucarly new for me (Probably not for some of you others). I especially enjoyed the voice acting. UT2004 was special to me for the vast amount of deathmatches, bombing runs and other gamemodes which was always a great way to pass off steam. The even larger amount of customization meant that you could play a new great quality mod every day of the week. I should reinstall it again soon. |
It's hard to decide betweem these two, but no game has come close to occupying as much of my free time as Baldur's Gate 2 and Planescape Torment have. These two are by far my favorite computer RPGs and offer incredible replay value.
|
1. Well, My favourite PC game of all time HAS to be Max Payne 2: Fall of Max Payne, Not only were the graphics great, The story was great the music was great I loved it even though it was short. But I didn't care I still play through that game when ever I get bored and the modding for it is amazing.
2. I also agree with everyone else on UT 2004, I 'used' to be REALLY big on that game it was probably the first PC game I had gotten with my new computer back in '04 and I couldn't stop playing it, Although now I don't play it as much but when I did I could play for nights and nights I just loved the whole game, This is definatly one of the best PC games out there. 3. The Day of the Tentacle was an amazing game I used to play, I loved those old point and click adventures and this was an amazing game. I loved the funny jokes the game had I liked the comic book style it presented and I loved the logic you needed to use in order to solve the puzzles. 4. The Kings quest titles (Mainly 5, 6 and 7) Were in my opinion some of the best games that I have ever played. I loved the graphics the story lines and the great puzzles you needed to solve I never liked 8 though... 5. Another game I really like on the PC has to be Call of Duty 2, The graphics are amazing and the gameplay is fun as hell I wouldn't consider this the 'best' though but I do consider it a great game. |
I think for me it would have to be battlefield 1942, damn did I lose a lot of hours to that game. I think counter strike would be a close second though.
|
Nethack. maybe the closest thing to a perfect game.
as far as games that normal people play, I'd say Baldurs Gate II. I put quite a few hours into that. |
Quote:
Any way to make it work on an XP PC? As far as my own most favorite game, it's Thief, hands down. Followed VERY closely by Deus Ex. |
Real-Time Strategy: StarCraft, definitely. This is the first game I ever played online and I'm still playing it occasionally. It's amazing how they managed to make all three races so different, yet so balanced.
First-Person Shooter: Return to Castle Wolfenstein. I've yet to come across an FPS as good as / better than RtCW. Okay, the singleplayer was rather disappointing, but the multiplayer... Whoah. It's about playing as a team, but having a decent aim won't hurt either. I've had a lot of great moments with this game. Adventure: Monkey Island's, Day of the Tentacle, Sam & Max, Grim Fandango... Can't pick my favorite. They're all so damn good. And of course the before-mentioned Incredible Machine! Thank you for mentioning it, didn't even remember this game existed! :) |
Ultima VII : Black Gate was a game that changed my life. No, really. It did. Suddenly it was not just the hero going after a quest, it's a world, and people work, live, and have their own stories to tell. Even if it's just a random townsperson. It was dazzling. And few RPGs still do things like that nowadays.

Unreal Tournament '99 and Unreal Tournament 2004 - Simply because of the high-speed fragfest and lots of fun. While the music in '99 was near godlike for its beauty (Skyward Fire and Botpack #9 are my absolute favorites), 2004 boasted vehicles and basically more modes (Favorite tracks here are DM-Rise and Serenity).
Deus Ex - As many have mentioned, Deus Ex is pretty deep and fun. You can customize your character's abilities to well-suit the field while the story is just fun. I saw what's what and I am incredibly impressed. Serious Sam: The Second Encounter - No, not Serious Sam II. This Serious Sam has fun written all over it. Minus sometimes his one-liners that are very very cheesy, nothing sates my excitement while unloading a double-barrel shotgun round to a Beheaded Kamikaze (which is in my opinion, one of the best created villians in any game). Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - While not as innovative as other RTS games out there, this features a squad unit which basically almost eliminates making soldiers just to create an army (while you have to create another soldier for another squad). Of course, there are also 3 races which I like. Bloodthirsters are fucking crazy while the Imperium's Commander has Orbital Bombardment. Awesome shit. Rome: Total War - Definitely a favorite of mine, this RTS game doesn't employ building up structures and creating units and all that. This game is all about soldiers in battle en masse. Deployment of pockets of soldiers is awesome and is also inspired by near damn factual events (except the names: Julii, Brutii and Scipii [Scipiones]). It's like watching a panoramic view of soldiers fighting. So many. Strategy is vital here since you don't have buildings to construct soldiers, you'll just have to depend on your men that's on the field. In short, this game is epic and a whole lot of fun. Plus, the music is well-suited for the game and there are some historical battles to be replayed, seeing if the player can reverse the soldiers' fates to what actually happened. A definite favorite of mine. |
Quest for Glory 1: So you want to be a hero. Amazingly funny and enjoyable I probably spent literaly a year total playing it between all of times I picked it back up. Plus pretty damn spiffy graphics for the time.
|
I'd have to go with The Longest Journey. The story, music, and voice acting just took my breath away. It is truly a masterpiece.
I have not played Dreamfall, its sequel, yet, so no comments there. |
I'll have to be silly and post a game that no one cares about:
Bust A Move 4 The chain reaction shouts and kawaii character design wins the cake. That doesn't seem to count since it was multiplatform, so my real favourite is: Sim Tower Even as a child, randomly placing rooms and frustrating tenants is lots of fun. Especially if the elevator only comes by, oh, every hour or so >=) |
This is really hard, because my favorite really changes as to what mood I'm in and what is going on at the time. If I start thinking about what I was most addicted to, and what I most enjoyed while I was playing it a ton, I'd really have to say that title goes to either Starcraft or The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. And yes, I've played Oblivion. A lot. Doesn't come close :).
EDIT -> One more game is right up there making me indecisive as to my favorite :). King's Quest VI. Something about VI games just really pwns...I mean FFVI is my favorite game of all time, hands down :D. |
I don't play that many PC games, but out of the ones that I have played and beat, I would say that Soldier of Fortune is my favorite. Out of the ones that I've played but never beat, I would say Deus Ex and No One Lives Forever were my favorites.
|
Deus Ex is my favorite. I certainly enjoyed the dialog and the action. A damn shame it won't play on my computer (well it can but it doesn't want to save so what's the point?). Fallout comes in a close second.
|
Easily Disciples II: Dark Prohpecy. On no other game have i wasted so much time. The next closest cadidate has to be Starcraft, but even that doesn't come nearly as close.
Disciples FTW! |
My overall favourite PC game of all time is probably Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2. The original was FUN, and the expansion pack made it even better. Shame the network/internet play is hideously outdated now.
Anarchy Online was a pretty fun MMO while I still played it. Quake 2 was pretty fucking fantastic. I didn't like number three quite as much. |
Quote:
You ever tried "Crazy Machines"? =) That's a great game, it's like "the incredible machine" .. you should try it ;) http://www.crazy-machines.com/ My favorite PC game of all time is http://www.mobygames.com/images/cove...3181211-00.jpg TRON 2.0... yea, i LOVE this game. but hey, starcraft is fine, too! |
I remember wasting countless hours playing Book Worm.
http://www.download-free-games.com/images/bookworm.jpg Totally got addicted to it and once even forgot about class o_O''' |
Planescape: Torment, probably. It has the best story I've ever seen in an RPG to date. It has some technical problems, but going back and seeing the game's originality and writing overshadows any other issues.
|
Overall, I'd probably have to say System Shock 2 is my favorite PC game (and definitely is in the running for my favorite game ever). The atmosphere is just perfect, and while the combat itself isn't the greatest, the RPG elements make the game very engrossing and even helps with the replay value (it's different going through it as, say, a psi user rather than gun-toting marine). It was just extremely well executed and a great premise, and even playing through it today is still extremely fun even when I know what's going to happen.
Although...I'd have to say that the multiplayer-online Natural Selection mod for Half-life is a very close second. Strangely enough, it has a setting similar to System Shock 2's, but I've probably sunk more hours into that game than any other. For almost a year, I played the game almost exclusively with other games only being a distraction before I came back to it. It was the first (and last, come to think of it) online game that I really got involved in, and it helps that I had a familiar server that always had players I knew on it. Unfortunately, the server and regulars kinda disbanded, and I haven't been able to get into the game like I used to be. But for the time I was into it, I really had a game I could connect to. |
I would have to say, despite the actual gameplay not being aw inducing, Diablo 2. Some buddies and I had a blast playing this game in High School. We have some memories tied up in it.
In those days it was eat, sleep, Diablo 2. |
The past 6-7 years, i've watch people play alot of Warcraft,Diablo2 , Half Life 2, and what not. I didn't try much of those games out. I thought they were ok. The only pc game that got me hooked was F.E.A.R.
A friend of mine i worked with back then told me about it. I thought it was just going to be another fps. But since they added a few sub-horror scenes and intense battles against a few goons, I was impressed by it. So i'd say Fear is my favorite PC game.."EVER". couldn't finish it though.. |
Mines would have to be Deus Ex as well. I remember playing this in the early hours each day during one exam period. I would play this game again but the sheer scale of it, there is no doubt I would get well hooked on it and have to play it from start to finish.
|
Mine would be Deus Ex. The sequel 'Invisible War' was a bit of a disapointment compared to the original. It was still a good game though.
I also really liked Warcraft 3. |
Descent 1, 2, & 3 and Unreal Tournament 99, & 2004 are my all time favorites. It would be hard for me to make a choice since each game has something about it I like and the experience I've with them online.
|
I think I have about two. My all time favorite is Operation Flashpoint: Cold War Crisis. The sheer realism and feasibility(although sometimes it got crazy) was amazing. The amount of freedom the player is confronted with is staggering. The islands total some 400 sq km of constantly available land to roam. Mission in front of you? Wanna find a broken truck instead? If they are going to make good simulations they need to set more of them in the cold war like they did with OFP.
The second is Jane's USAF. The sheer variety of planes available and the diversity of the campaigns(Vietnam, to Desert Storm, to a scenario involving the newer F-22A) made it one of the best simulations I've played. LOMAC is good, so is Falcon 4.0; USAF was just amazing though. Plus, the F-4 is just sexy. Honorable mentions: Rise of Nations, Half Life, and Rainbow Six. |
Mine is, Max Payne 2. It is by far the most story intensive title out of any action title i've played on the PC and it has some of the best graphics (For the time it was out) I had ever witnessed on a PC game, The game still holds up well today graphically and game play wise. I really think that Max Payne 2 is probably one of the best reasons to ever play Third Person shooters in general seeing as it has such an amazing story line topped with some of the best bullet time you'll ever experiance in a video game.
My second favourite would have to be (In General, Excluding the first title) the Hitman series. Those games always had an amazing story line and always gave you that feel like you could go back and do anything. I loved that feel and the missions were just so un believably fun in all of these titles, And the story line is just amazing. |
Have very fond memories of playing the original Dark Forces back on Windows95 - and the funny thing is I still think that it is the best Star Wars game (although I haven't played the RPG games, which I hear are quite decent).
It surprises me that with all the creative elements that are in place within the Lucas Empire that they can't compete with the likes of Valve or UbiSoft to put out a groundbreaking FPS. Still, one can hope. |
Over the years since its release, I don't think any game has yet to bring me more joy than Total Annihilation. It had a amazing game engine that put Red Alert 1 to shame since they were both released more or less at the same time. I could spend days fighting the computer AI's in a custom battle on a large map. Now after watching the 300MB Supreme Commander trailer this week, I seriously can't wait for its release, at last, a true unofficial successor to the TA series will finally be released.
|
Easily, easily UT99. Although UT2k4 has Onslaught which owns me, and is graphically superior, nothing can match the "feel" of UT99, even when modded. I haven't played it unmodded since... well, 1999 lol. Monster Hunt and UT4E mods are a must. Also, UT2k3 ruined Domination mode, which rivals even Onslaught.

I enjoyed the A.I. for what it was worth, but the whole massive battles online is what sucked me in. Before I played TA I did play other RTS games such as Red Alert (and even tried to play some after like Starcraft) but the thing that strikes me most about TA are it's newtonian physics implemented in the game. While the maps were 2D graphics, they were mapped in 3D and that really played a major role in how I setup battle tactics in the game. I tried to play games like Starcraft after I played TA, the lack of physics and true unit control really left a bad impression of Starcraft on me, the game was felt too simple and had no substance. Now about Supreme Commander, that is going to be the only game I might be playing for the 4 years after it releases. I am so relieved that Mr. Taylor is going to keep the same physics in this game, that was my biggest concern! Real Life Story Time Something I always tell when involved in a Total Annihilation / Supreme Commander discussion. I posted something like this before, but this place keeps getting wiped out... so here it is re-rold! I used to work with other admins back on the old Cavedog Boneyards online service for Total Annihilation. Our job was to maintain integrity of the service and write CNN-like articles of galactic battles between ARM and CORE players. So I could spectate these 1 vs. 1 battles and then write it in a story for posting on the main news section of the service. Well at some point, we all came across a glitch in the game that happened on a certain map (it was an Acid World) and at a certain point on the map. What happened was the appearance of an ARM Commander was seen that would look like he was walking while cloaking and de-cloaking, but it was more like random flickering in and out which was a lot more glitchy. Anyway the funny part is that the scale of the model was larger than normal, so he looked about as big if not bigger than the CORE Krogoth. Well during this specific galactic battle region, many people would see this glitch, but no one could explain it. So what did we do? We just wrote a silly rumor story about the Supreme Commander that was circling around the TA Boneyards for awhile, trying to make it look like the possible answer for the ex-CORE Commander, Krogoth. Since the highest player rank in the service was High Commander so we thought, "What's higher than high? Let's go for Supreme!" and thus the birth of the mythical Supreme Commander. Now, the name of Supreme Commander being used in the latest game is likely just a coincidence but the fact that a small rumor based on a glitch came up with that mythical name may actually end up being on the soon to be greatest all-time game ever created! And I also like other PC games such as UT Classic which I still play to this day (http://girl-gamers.com/min-ut.avi). UT2k4 for Assault and Onslaught matches. Deus Ex for one of the greatest RPG's ever. Fallout 1 and 2 for the best damned dialogue in an RPG and THE GREATEST RPG ever. Half-Life 2 and HL2: Episode 1 for the really fun Gravity Gun (so so I like the rest of the game too!) And DOOM 3 just for the great single-player experience it really was. |
Either Dark Forces II or Starcraft. Starcraft I played hours and hours, probably logged more hours on that game than I ever did even on Morrowind. And that's no small number. It is to date, IMHO, the most balanced RTS ever made.
Dark Forces II was an amazing game, and it didn't have quite so cheesy of real-life video as other games did at the time, being that it was the huge fad of the day for video games. It is the one game where I can honestly say I enjoyed the jumping puzzles. |
DarkLink: Nice choice - I would say that for me it's a toss-up between Blood or Dark Forces II for favorite single-player FPS ever. I tried to get into Jedi Knight II but it just doesn't have the same flavor somehow...
|
It's pretty hard to find one single game that I can call the greatest of all time, since every each one have something that makes it special.
The first one that comes to my mind is definitely the Diablo series, specially Diablo 2 and expansion. A very great game with amazing story and fast paced action. It gave MONTHS of fun. Best $50 i've ever spent (battlechest  ). The second one should be Dark Forces II - Jedi Knight. It was the first FPS that allowed you to wield a lightsaber as a weapon, and it was VERY fun. I think it featured a great level design, not to mention a great story too. The second JK was very fun too, but not more than the first one. The third should be Half-Life, the atmosphere that it had was pretty particular, I can't explain it. HL2 was a very good game too, but it had a different atmosphere. Fourth has to be Metal Gear Solid. Maybe it didn't had the best graphics for that time, but it had a great story, with twisted plot and everything. I had to pause the game and replay it sometimes just to understand what was going on. Hideo Kojima is a genius. That's all that comes to my mind right now. If I keep thinking I probably won't finish this post :ashamed: |
I also second Total Annihilation. Nothing quite like it before it, nothing quite like it since. Especially I loved playing without fog of war (so that the defences get ample chance to blast holes into the legion of ships moving ominously in your direction...), and the battles were HUGE. I also loved the fact that Cavedog gave us so much extra stuff--new units, new maps, new missions. It was exciting to install new units and to get to try 'em out!
I think TA was probably the first game I ever bought... Starcraft is great, but it gave me more the feeling of an expansive rock-paper-scissors game, rather than war. TA really felt like combat. Plus the music kicks ass. That's a great story Mina, by the way. And yeah, Supreme Commander is the only game that I can imagine changing my mind about TA being the best game ever. I'm so excited about it! Come on, 2007! EDIT: If you were underwhelmed by the AI in TA btw, there's a fanmade AI that is pretty killer called "Mostly Harmless". I have a pretty tough time beating it on smaller maps (with limited metal). Of course, I have a pretty tough time beating anybody on TA, but never mind that. =D My other most-played PC game might be Worms 2... |

Nevertheless fun, but you wonder about its status on the gaming 'serving' pyramid as some sort of genre staple. |

The best PC game (and in my opinion, the best game period) that I've ever played is System Shock 2. I've never played a game that let me play as myself quite in the same way that that game did. That mixed with the atmosphere, the great voice acting (at least for those characters that really mattered), the way the story would actually change slightly to make sense depending on your actions, and the persistent and deadly villain around you at all times.... mmm, man. It's the only game I've ever played that once I beat, I had to start a new game right away just so I could keep playing it.
Since the rights situation with the game is so messy, we may never see another true sequel, but if Bioshock is as good as it looks like it might be, we just might have another franchise to follow that'll be just as brilliantly crafted. Here's to hoping. |
Either Morrowind or Starcraft. It's hard to choose between the two - IMHO Morrowind had such an excellent and riveting story if you read into it at all, and the main quest was superb, you had the feeling that you chose to become the Nerevarine....Starcraft was just so much FUN, and still remains fun to this day, and boasts a pretty good story besides.
If you are finding Starcraft to be like rock-paper-scissors, then IMHO you aren't playing the game right, or doing SOMETHING wrong. TA was a great game also, I just couldn't fine myself getting into it as much as I did with Starcraft. Still very excellent. EDIT-> Holy shit I posted in this thread not that long ago. I feel stupid. Well my third choice way up there still remains. Speculative - same w/ me & JKII. I just found myself playing it for the awesome lightsaber battles, and after awhile that just got tiring. DFII just seemed more addicting, deep, evil, epic....can't think of the right words at the moment. I honestly think the filmed characters helped in that game, gave them more depth. |
It'd be between Deus Ex and Syndicate Wars. If I go by hours played, then Syndicate Wars gets it. It was the first PC game to ever rival my favorite console games. I always found it to be a wonderfully immersive game with the right mix of depth and accessibility. I should also mention that the strategy guide is the perfect accompaniment. Maybe the only strategy guide that actually enhances the game experience with all of the context it provides. It's written as if the game world actually exists and it's totally believable how it explains the details and nuances of the fictional future in Syndicate Wars. Deus Ex of course is just a masterpiece through and through. It'd be just as easy to pick that one for reasons already stated.

Well, I don't play that many PC Games, but out of the ones I've played, I have a couple favorites: For Gameplay, I have to say Neverwinter Nights (All expansions included, I have Diamond Edition). I absolutely love everything about how that game plays! For storyline, I'm gonna have to go with an old one that I played a few years back... Septerra Core!!! The story was simply awesome, despite a slight need for improvement in gameplay in my opinion... I was hooked on it from the beginning...
|
While games like Starcraft, Dues Ex, Quake, Baldur's Gate, Diablo were undisputably fantastic games here's a list of my more rare favourites I'll never forget:
- Blake Stone - Hocus Pocus - Commander Keen Episode 4 - Cannon Fodder - Blood - Lemmings - Ignition - Rally Championship Xtreme - Icewind Dale - Unreal So favourite game... hmmm two thumbs up to Death Rally :)~! |
Since it's been a while since I played any PC games, but those old Lucas Arts point-and-click are the best for me. Games like Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle and Sam & Max I'll never forget.
|
I'm gonna have to say Starcraft: Brood Wars, i play it all the time. Also WoW, go BLIZZARD! Oh yeah and 3rd: Halo. :D
|
Mine is Dune 2 always and forever. This game is so good for a RTS it just can't be topped in my book. I simply love the good old graphic. Those were the days.
By the way, is there an official site to download freeware games with no viruses or anything like that. I've been looking for some of the freeware games to download. Thank you. |
Because I use my consoles for gaming and play only on a PC what can't be played properly on a console, there's never been the need to upgrade my old PC, and when it gave up the ghost, I bought a medium-class new one. So I couldn't care less about stunning 3D graphics - give me a good 2D strategy or roleplaying game, and I'm set.
The most addicting PC gaming experience for me is Age of Wonders, replaced by AoW Shadow Magic when it came out. In my whole life I've never played any game for a longer overall time than these two. I'm sure there are better strategy games, gameplay-wise, but the captivating art design, the ear candy music, all those little ideas and touches that form a collection of the very best of fantasy staples, coupled with the fact that I'm a sucker for western high fantasy and don't care for 3D animation when there's simply no need for a third dimension (actually I think 2D looks much more evocative and artistic), make the AoW series the essence of fantasy gaming for me, regardless of genre. The Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale series finish second and third (despite the atrocious pathfinding), and I bemoan the fact that these were the last great 2D roleplaying experiences. I don't get why everything has to be 3D, especially in the roleplaying genre. But I guess it depends if you started out with 2D and watched it grow up or if you belong to the 3D generation. I feel old. Zorro |
I would have to say the PC game that I have had by far the most fun playing is UT99, with UT04 following close behind. UT99 was the epitome of the run and gun FPS, and nothing can come close to it. Everything else is just too slow.
|
I have to agree with Helloween, Disciples 2: Dark Prophecy and specifically the expansion Eise of The Elves, is the bomb-diggity, especially in the single player realm.
It's turn based strategy with a decent story. Four factions (five w/ expansion), leader and party based. It is so addicting to level up your party to uber-status and start torching every enemy stack (including their impenetrable capital city). The thing that does it for the series is the hand drawn-painted graphics. The characters just look so great in their portraits. Heck I think I'm gonna make an Ava-Sig combo out of it pretty soon. I've just recently started picking this game up again in anticipation for Disciples3. In multiplayer, nothing has ever gotten me as hooked as Day Of Defeat. Now I'm talking the original mod as well as the new Valve Source version. Soooo much fun. Gotta love WWII guns, and this implimentation of WWII doesn't have all the tanks/vehicles taking the foot game out of the limelight. A total blast. |
Day of the Tentacle, aka Maniac Mansion 2. It is the oldest game that I still play often on the PC outside of the King's Quest series.
|
I started playing Ragnarok Online back in November '05, and I was addicted pretty much up until I got banned some time in May. I was on an active server (and according to what I've heard, the highest grossing private server for the game), and had pretty much all of the items, cards, and equipment you could have on my Level 231 Stalker named sexrulr. After getting banned, the server soon made pretty much a duplicate of itself with new maps, monsters, and items, but with a full reset of accounts, characters, items, and zeny (the money system of the game). The server I originally played on is still somewhat active, with somewhere from 75 to 100 people on at a time, but without my own character to play on, it's not as fun - especially without the 500+ people that were normally on [I play on a Level 255 Champion named fryl0ck, a Level 255 Assassin Cross named Iruga1, and a Level 230 Lord Knight named Ericson~~! when I play (but they are all friends' characters)].
Just because it was able to keep my interest for as long as it did, I'd say that it is my favorite game of all time - overall. P.S. I ended up hosting my own server for about a month, mostly for personal usage, though I had somewhere from five to ten people on at a time. |
Favorite PC Game
This is going to date me as being older than 90% of the people on this board (and I'm not even old) but my favorite PC game of all time is Quest For Glory IV: Shadows of Darkness. The story, the art (I still love the hand drawn stuff compared to the 3d modeling of everything today), the music, and for those who have played it, c'mon, you totally dug the rusalka. I was like 13 and was like "whoaaaaaa" when I got to that part. Katrina's sacrifice at the end, too...just a great story and good old fashioned game. I wish they made 'em like that still these days. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm looking forward to Mark of Chaos and Medieval 2 Total War as much as the next guy, but I'm also a sucker for the classics.
Other honorable mentions: Crusader: No Remorse. King's Quest V: Absence Makes the Heart Go Yonder. Syndicate. Fantasy General More recently: Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat and Dark Omen. Planescape: Torment (every rpg should have a story this good or the writers should be fired and replaced with competent people. I feel like modern rpg's are written by people who aren't actually writers, and perhaps haven't even graduated from high school.) Baldur's Gate I and II and expansions. (NWN just didn't have the same magic.) Rome: Total Realism (community expansion of Rome: Total War, about 1000x better than the original) Thanks for the topic and the subsquent trip down memory lane. |
I've played a lot of good PC games over the years, but I think my absolute favourite is none other than Tie Fighter Collector's CD-ROM. The CD-ROM version had more cleaner graphics and came with the expansions too (I'm pretty sure it did). Anyway, it was an awesome game with good music, game play and lots of different objectives in each mission, thus giving replayability. I've never found anyone else who played it though. They all say it's too complicated. What? The game had tutorial missions right at the beginning!

Deus Ex hands down the story and gameplay were just amazing. I'd be happy if they just remade it with better graphics and physics and stuff.
|
If we were going by sheer time spent playing a game, I'd have say (sadly) World of Warcraft.
However, because it was the first game that I ever played in multiplayer exclusively (on my 33.3k modem), I'd have to pick Starseige TRIBES. I was too young to really appreciate the team cooperation it required, but I did get a kick out of the thousands of modded weapons that people came up with. Other Honorables: Diablo 2 Tac Ops FF7 (PC version) Halo CE Ooooh I almost forgot Total Annihilation! |
I've also played a MMORPG for quite a long time now (FFXI), but I really can't say it's the best game I've ever played, though it would probably be the one I've played the most.
The Fallout games (1 and 2) are probably my favourites. The setting is just absolutely dead on, and I love the fact that it doesn't hold back on the "mature themes". Don't get me wrong, stuff like that doesn't make a game great, but it can certainly add a lot when it's used in the right way. Fallout does just this, and it feels completely natural within the world of the game. It's also perhaps the best games I've played when it comes to the roleplaying. In this game I feel like I really have choices. I really like Baldurs gate and the Elder Scrolls series as well, but if it's roleplaying I want, Fallout is definetely the winner. I also love the sheer volume of different random encounters. Playing this game for the first time (I played 2 first), it was actually quite scary to travel the wastes because it's really dangerous (especially playing it for the first time)! But you can also encounter merchants and so much other stuff... It's really awesome. These games are not perfect, but the scope and the sheer volume of stuff there is makes them a true winner for me. Awesome games. I'm just now playing Arcanum, which is reminiscant of the Fallout series in that it's quite a good roleplaying game. I'm really enjoying it (is has a rather unique setting to), but it doesn't quite reach the wonder of Fallout. Still a very good game that I'd recommend to anyone that likes Fallout. |
Sims (originals), Diablo 1-2, Shadow Warrior, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, Postal 2, Battlefield 1942, Deer Hunter 2 and 4, Baldur's Gate, Dark Forces, Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight, Ultima Online (Although its an MMO), Morrowind, and that's about all that comes to mind. What does the above list say about my computer's specs? Not a whole lot.
FAV: DooM |
Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars
In every way shape and form my favourite PC, PSX and GBA game, and also my number 1 favourite game of all time. Everything is perfect. It's adventure gaming at it's best, and point and click at it's best. It has a great story, great voice acting, great animation. It's just amazing. Some other to make this list would be Duke Nukem 3D, Monkey Island (all of them), Sam and Max, Half-Life 1 and 2, Counter-Strike and others I can't think of. |
Far Cry!!!!! de best!!! yet a little too freaky.
Double Post: the last level of far cry is extreamly hard, so it's pretty annoying. Double Post: does any1 else play far cry? Double Post: da reason i like far cry is because: 1. Ragdoll style death! 2. can see bullet holes when you shoot someone dead, or when you shoot a already dead person. 3. Freaky aliens!!!! |
Monkey Island series..although i played the first two on my old amiga 500^^
|
The Sims 2: [Expansions]
That's the only original PC game I've played that wasn't a port, multi-platform, or MMOG recently. When I first started playing it was so friggin fun. But now it's kind of repetative and annoying, as if I've seen everything in it already which I haven't. I've been looking for some good games worth playing that support gamepads. I really can't wait until PSU comes out. |
All about Counter Strike...
I still play 1.6, but lately it's not the game that makes me wanna quit, but the hackers. CS:S sucks btw. |
Civilization II, lost more hours to the scenarios on that than to most of my other games combined. Truly brilliant game.
|
Well, not necessarily my favorite but my most memorable games would be back in the early 90s, the ones I spent my preteen years on, which really amounted no more than ID Software's Wolfentein 3D/Doom I & II.
Aside from that, I have to say Ion Storm is up there with Black Isle as being leagues ahead of any other company, for making the Thief series (all 3 were great) and Deus Ex. It's insane how easy it is to look past the outdated graphics for these games (except Thief 3, which looks pretty good), still find myself replaying 2 or more of these games every year. Of course both of those companies went bankrupt...apparently marketing outways quality. Also a big fan of -Baldur's Gate I & II (Icewind Dale was also pretty good) -Planescape Torment (would love to finish but the 640x480 res is really hard to look past) -Half-Life 2 It's a damn shame that no recent computer games have come even close to how awesome the old Ion Storm games were, but at the same time it prevents me from shelling out $1500 for computer upgrades. |
replying
id say that the best game so far would be um um gunz but thats offline well luancher is messed some ppl get in lots dont then i say that need for speed most wanted pretty good if ur bored
|
My personal favorites are Civilization IV and SimCity IV. For some reason, I just love those games... I have played every version of each series.
|
One more for the Deus Ex camp here. I don't think I could be friends with anyone who couldn't find enjoyment from that game.
Sadly, the only version I've been able to play all the way through was the watered-down PS2 port :(. |
Lots of gems listed off so far, and maybe I missed where someone mentioned this one, but I'm a bit sad that nobody's come up with either of the Fallout games so far. Those were badass.
I think the game that I have the fondest memories of playing, though, was a less-known MMO back in the day called Asheron's Call. The graphics weren't anything amazing, but the gameplay was incredibly fun. I miss it. The servers still exist, but it's just not the same anymore. I hope sometime the server software leaks. |
Sam and Max Hit the Road, Master of Orion, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, and Civilization 3. I can't choose any of those titles to be my favorite. I love them all equally.
|
Space Quest 6, Dark Fall, Police Quest 4, Lighthouse, Commander Keen 4, Duke Nukem 3D, Baldur's Gate II, Omikron: The Nomad Soul and Max Payne are my favourite PC games ever. They were so fun and each had their special moments. I invested tons of time into these games. Nowadays, there are too many similar PC games. It's all just those war games.
|
THE ultimate 7 favorites are:
1. Eve-Online (best Online Game Ever Made, still playing  )
2. Lord of Magic 2 (wish they made another!) 3. Diablo2 & expansion (no brainer but great) 4. Heroes of Might and Magic 2 (graphics weren't great, but gameplay was awesome!) 5. Red Alert 2 & expansion (cause i was unbeatable at it against peers) 6. WarCraft2 & expansion (first multiplayer experience, lost over 100games before winning 3... [played first time multiplayer with a guy who had game for 1year already... unfair!]) 7. Civilization 2 7.5. Homeworld 2 (because of the 3dimensional combat) |
Starcraft, nothing else even comes close. Ok, maybe Diablo 2.. Starcarft is one of my contenders for best game ever, period. It was the first game I played online for free, (The first game I played online was MultiPlayer Battletech: Solaris on the Gamestorm network) and is the only one that interests me in muliplayer, aside from d2. I can't play D2 Online though because of my slow connection. I don't see why MMORPGS are so popular.. Then again, I've never played one thanks to said connection.

For me, my favourite PC game has to be KOTOR. It may have been a little linear, but the story and the gameplay more than made up for it. I suppose that the graphics weren't too bad either. But the main reasons that I enjoyed this game so much was for the adventure and to the character storylines. |
Quote:
|
Well, to make my reasons for liking KOTOR less like a review for the game and more like opinions....
I liked this game because the story sucked me in and had me playing into the small hours of the morning just to find out what was going to happen next. That twist in the tail had me shocked, I just wasn't expecting it. There was a good selection of characters to have in your team, and they all interacted with one another in different ways. And depending on who you had with you would depend on the things that they would comment about and what they would say about the situation. And, at the time, I thought that this was actually quite clever. Also, the voice acting for each character was very good, and made the characters more believable. The worlds were all very varied, but linear. But this was good, because all the worlds were different I never felt like I was doing the same thing on the worlds over and over again. The sounds in the game fitted in well. The music for each world made the environments all that more believable. |
wow KOTOR looks great i checked it out here lucasarts.com/products/swkotor/index.html
too bad it has no multiplayer otherwise i would be playing it on coopertive with my brother and some friends. heres half-life 2 steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=game&AppId=220& im terrible at explaining things sorry :( |
You don't need to explain why you like HL2. If you like it, than you like it.
Personally, I like CSS-Zombie Horde ^_^. Gary's mod gets boring after awhile. I am picking up BF2 this saturday =D I am going to play it straight 6 hours with 10 of my friends =D. |
haha holy shit lan party thats great. i need more ram and a better graphic card to play bf2 and bf 2142 on my computer i only have a geforce 4 ti 128mb 4x and 256 ram LOL. but it plays css smoothly. anybody played sven coop and brain bread for half life? go to svencoop.com and ironoak.de check them out ;)

Between Starcraft and Unreal Tournament '99, I always find myself periodically coming back to these games. I get addicted to them in bursts, probably because they're always fun to play and easy enough to relearn things if you've been out a while. Plus there's always people to go against (that applies to many games though), but it's just that old school vibe. I'd Starcraft is more of a favorite than UT99, probably because of Starship Troopers <3, but these games are definitely my top two.
|
ya same here, those games are great. especially diablo 2: lord of destruction, max payne and hitman. cant get enough of them.
|
I'd say NetHack, easily. The game has tons of variables and randomization, you learn something new with each game. And it has been stated to take years to master (though I somehow got my first ascension in about 3-months play.) If I ever got stuck on a desert island, and could only have one game to spend the rest of eternity with, NetHack would be it. Enough said.
Close favorites would be DooM/DooM II/Final DooM/Ultimate DooM, plus all WADs/TCs ever created for them, all conveniently loaded up on Doomsday. Those would keep me busy for quite a while. |
gta vice city.
Yeha go ahead and laugh, i played this game everyday for atleast 2-3 hours for a YEAR. the first months were crazy, i played all day. Recording stunts, replaying missions etc. |
I wanna say CS but that was jsut an addictive game lol what my favorite is Jedi Knights 1 or 2. played it when i was like 8-9 lol. JEDI KNIGHTS! BOOYA. but im not a star wars freak lol.
|
Starcraft, rivaled with older generation RTS, the original Command and Conquer.
|
I love two very oposite pc games. The first is The Sims2 (with all expansion packs) and the second one is Oblivion:The Elder Scrolls IV.
But, when I look better now, these two games has a common thing - GREAT GRAPHIC I also love Heroes of Might and Magic V. They resurect this legendary game successfully... for my opinion, of course. What do rest of you think? |
It's hard to pin point down an exact favorite as there are multiple titles up there, genre based that hold a great spot in my memory.
FPS, I'd have to say Unreal Tournament (the very first one not the 2 crappy sequels). RTS, Starcraft is the winner, just good single and multi player memories from that time Adventure, I liked the first 2 Broken sword games alot, and enjoyed them more than the Monkey Island series. Those are really the genre's I play on PC. |
Starcraft is my favorite game of all time, EVER. Since it's release in '98 I've been playing online on and off, casually and competitively(at least attempting to). The fast paced gameplay and the varied levels of accessible competition and strategy kept me hooked all this time.
For the past few years I even started following its professional gaming scene in Korea, downloading videos from broadcasted matches and reading up on the latest through an English Starcraft community, TeamLiquid.net. Four years ago I chuckled at the thought of Starcraft as a spectator sport, but now I'm anxious to get my hands on a broadcasted game in a language I can't understand; I still get pumped hearing them call the "play-by-play" with crowds cheering. |
Fallout, most definitely. I understand I talk about a lot, but it's the only CRPG so far aside from Planescape that lets you roleplay a character in a consistant gameworld through character interaction instead of just falling back on simple good/evil choices or class constrictions. Plus the setting is just wild. Nothing says fun like a retro-futuristic nuclear apocalypse.
As for Half-Life 2, the best thing about it, I think, is that reviewers are starting to toy around with the idea of the game looking dated. If it starts becoming a more common practice, then it just confirms my theory that we've reached a graphical Uncanny Valley. |
I got way too many favourites to pick just one, so here's a small selection:
Beyond Good & Evil They just make too little games like these anymore. Captures the spirit of good old adventuring perfectly and molds it into a fantastic modern action/adventure. It has charm and atmosphere like no other. Sorely overlooked. Full Throttle One of LucasArts' most fantastic adventure games EVER. I love the rough-and-rowdy action movie atmosphere, especially during the climax. Not to mention Mark "Luke Skywalker" Hamill voices the villain. And the music just plain ROCKS. Gabriel Knight: Sins Of The Fathers Sierra's best. I love how the story blends fact and fiction, plus it fleshes out Voodoo beyond the usual dolls-and-pins stuff. Logical, tricky and fun to solve puzzles and FABULOUS music make this is an utter joy to play. Same goes for the sequel (and the switch from pixel art to live action was a master stroke, especially since they handled it so brilliantly, minus the casting of Dean Erickson as Gabriel). Half-Life Redefined single-player FPS and still has one of the largest mod communities in existence. The atmosphere and presentation of the game was and still is unbeatable. |
Diablo 2 LoD, NWN Series, Final Fantasy Tactics. Basically all these games have very deep character customization/personalization (attribute-wise, skill-wise, appearance-wise). And those three you can play off-line 24/7 and still can't get enough of it.
|
I had a lot of funs with Black an White 2 I guess cause I just liked playing a god.
I didn't get to go deeper into the game though since I needed to make room for city of villains :/ |
Was going to go ahead and toss my lot with Starcraft, but instead I'm going to go with Command and Conquer Tiberium Dawn. While starcraft is arguably the better game but to me the old C&C had it at the point where everything felt right. You didn't have to worry excessively about resource gathering yet by no means was it a totally hands free process. The combat in that game just felt very straight forward, anyone could get it. Compared to today's RTS' its like comparing a tactical room breach to a casual snowball fight. You didn't have to worry about complex relationships between units such as auras or special abilities. You just horded a large group of tanks and whatnot and rolled the other guy's base. Now of course some people find that distasteful, but I think its what made the C&C games so fun, and I can only hope they didn't screw things up with C&C3.
|
System Shock 2. Period. Like Deus Ex, this game totally blew me away. I'd say it's almost a tie between the two, but System Shock 2 wins because of it's incredible atmosphere, a blend of horror, cybernetics, sci-fi and the entire RPG element just makes it a winner. Furthermore, the music is stunning, the storyline and the way it's conveyed through audio logs is just top-notch.
Now, I'm a huge horror fan in general and the game has an eerie effect of being able to scare the living fuck out of you - nearly forcing you to just quit altogether and I was there a few times, but I always came back for more and pushed on. When you find a game that's able to give you both of those - fear and lust for more fear, you know it's perfect. Another thing worth mentioning is the multiplayer feature. Coop with 4 players in a stranded intergalactic cruiser that has been overrun by aliens and an AI gone rogue. Just face it, it doesn't get better than that. |
Favorited List:
Ultima 7 : The Black Gate and Serpent Isle Baldur's Gate Saga Wing Commander 3 and 4 Masters of Magic Morrowind Tribes 1 Quake 2 and Duke3D Loom and Monkey Island The Details: Favorite game(s).. hmmm [never can choose just one] Ultima 7 : The Black Gate and Serpent Isle wins a favorite in my list. That game was so very well developed, there are few that are like that, if any these days... [single player] Morrowind makes my list but, it doesn't quite capture the player like Ultima 7, but gives plenty of free reign, and OH the Awesome thing about Morrowind : MODS.... OMG, modded Morrowind looks like Oblivion :P [well it sure comes much closer] Players have professionaly replaced, all the textures, most models, fixed all the original bugs the developers never fixed, etc etc etc [I have 10 gigs of mods to try :P] (someone claimed to have 50!] The Baldur's Gate makes the list for being the closest thing to Ultima in a whole amazing compelling story of its own. Surpassing Ultima in character development; and of course what's the thing I love? MODS!!! Once again, Baldur's Gate has a strong mod base: Romances, AI changes, quests, etc; although much less freeform than Morrowind or Ultima [minus :(] But, for a semi-linear story it is excellent. Tribes 1 gets a favorite. That game I feel is in a place of its own. Immmmmmmmensely sadly it doesn't reach the potential in mods that it could be by annnnny means. But the original game, strictly multiplayer is still one of the best in my opinion out there. If people would have just modded it like Morrowind... Quake 2 gets a favorite, before Tribes I was pure Q2. Some damn good times. I can still hear the railgun and know the feel of that rocket...! QUAD DAMAGE! Masters of Magic is HANDS DOWN the best strategy magic game there is that I've played [Age of Wonders and the like were fun, but they never had that same addictiveness I felt with MoM!] I'll never forget summoning Warrax the Chaos Warrior... Call the Void... BOOM!! Wing Commander 3 and a little bit less 4 makes a favorite... Those games need to be fixed up in High Def and re-released. Those were the sexiest flight simulator games I've played. Strong story, memorible characters; Live GOOD actors?! Sigh! What the hell happened with the Wing Commander Movie wt... was that lol The games were great. Loom and Monkey Island had some of the best atmosphere, and until The Longest Journey came along, the only adventure games I really played~ [never could get into the others] Quake 1 and Duke3d left lasting impressions~ Those games have OWNAGE! I still remember Ultimate Quake, a mod where you could be a Jedi, Predator, Alien, Quake guy, Magic user, Warrior, etc etc etc I remember the Quake 1 movie demo that was like 3 hours long with voice acting, a story and everything lol I haven't seen a demo of Quake quality since then :P I haven't really played many recent recent games so I can't comment on them. Worms games were great fun but didn't feel a great depth to them :P Sims is a good game, but for me it was like a one time thing. Starcraft was pretty sweet, but I eventually went back to games I liked more like Tribes :P Half-Life 1 was really great, but I haven't really thought about it or replayed it much since. Finally of course there are emulators and imported games that I've found to be really sweet and different but since there style is more like a console game [although PC] I'll leave em out :P I tried Deus Ex but I died after 1 minute of playing... :P [I think I pulled out a rocket or something and used it] Diablo 2 was a fun game, but GRRR I invested time into it to have the accounts auto-disabled since I didn't login to it during the summer [happened to 3 fully pumped with character accounts I made!] The fact that I could login, see my characters but couldn't restore them just made me say. Okay no more. :P 4#@423423$234@#$2342342 EDIT: I miss Mr Fujisawa one of the oddest characters for D2 I made... It was a Barbarian, that basically was built for ridiculous speed, jumping and... PUNCHING! That's right he never had a weapon, I beat Diablo by PUNCHING! Used punching skills combined with great artifacts to do poison, shock, knockback, fear and all sorts of damage lol it never failed to make people laugh Oh and Max Payne 1 and 2... I've gotten really interested in trying that game, I think I'll get it partially thanks to seeing it favorited multiple times ;) |
Half-Life (first game I played online)
Counter-Strike (probably the first game for everyone else) Asheron's Call (great MMORPG) |
Artificial Girl 2
Ya, that's right I went there, came back bought a smoothie and went back. |
I'm not much of an MMO or RPG gamer, so my winners are UT and CS.
I did however really like "The Longest Journey", when I had the patience to play it... I also played EQ but got too bored. What can I say? I just like to frag. Additional Spam: Quote:

Chip's Challenge.
An old game, I know. But it still enchants me until now. A very simple yet brainstorming game. |
My all time favorite is Starcraft followed by Counter-Strike, Diablo 2, and UT 2004. I just started playing SC again this week and it's still just as fun as it always was.

X-Wing the original DOS, non-Tie Fighter, non Windows 95, 3D Graphics support or multiplayer.
I must have logged about 1000 hours flight time. The joystick plastic eventually moulded into the shape of my hand. I learned how to work a PC trying to install it, getting it to work and cheat (Ahem!) The Collectors Edition CD is permanently attached to a frame on the wall of my office after being scratched from use. Oh and that was me that blew up the death star! |
Sim City 4 and AOE II. I've spent hours at a time going through both of those games, and I still play them on a regular basis.
|
My favorite is definitely American McGee's Alice. I love that game. ;d I even collect the figurines from it. I remember I saw it in stores when it was first released and wanted it,but didn't actually get it till a few years later. I haven't played through it nearly enough though.
Second would have to be Half Life and Half Life 2. Very good games. |
Hard to choose. There's so many good ones.
UFO - Enemy Unknown A really old DOS game that I once bought in a sale bin. These were the days of huge PC boxes. I still have it somewhere. I was pleasantly surprised at how awesome it was. You had so much freedom. You could choose your soldiers, equip them with what you want, research and develop new weapons and equipment that you choose. Try to figure out the enemies equipment and weapons. Choose where to deploy your soldiers. Man this game was so awesome. Deus Ex Another gem of a game. The amount of freedom and choices you get is insane. You can choose to go the stealth approach, go in guns blazing. You can go underground, or use the guarded elevator, you can kill that smelly hobo, or you can listen to his story. I must have played this game at least 10 times, and every time I discover something new. Command & Conquer Now who doesn't remember this game? I know dune is the real "mother" of RTS games, but I feel it's this game what made RTS games what it is today. I replayed it a week ago, in anticipation for C&C3, and the memories came back alright. GDI vs NOD, Kane!, Frank Klepacki. Aye this game needs no explanation. Outcast I wouldn't be surprised if many of you never even heard of this game. It was never really that popular, and I'm sure outside of the benelux nobody ever heard of it, but it's one hell of a game. Back then the graphics were "jesus!" but it was the gameplay which got me. It was a really nice story about this alternate universe where you end up in, and you get a lot of freedom to discover the area, and there's so many quests to do and people to talk to. I feel they are all worth the title. I'm not gonna choose just one. |
This will really date me, but I love the original Myst! Yeah, I played computer games when there were no graphics. Anyone else ever own a Radio Shack TRS-80?
|
The Freespace series, mostly Freespace 1 though.
The atmosphere was top notch and it had some of the most epic battles I've played in games. Many a hour wasted on the series. |
Gotta have a list for this
Starcraft Of course there were plenty of RTS titles prior to SC, but this has been my reigning favorite in the genre. It was just so much fun to play, and the online 'Use Map Settings' add-ons to the game were fantastic (for the most part). Even 10 years later, I have no problems picking it up and playing a quick match against the computer in big game hunters. Civilization 2 Though I have loved the installments of 3 and 4 in this series to be just as pleasing, this one has a special place for me. It was the first one I played in the series (I have, however, since revisited the original), and it got me addicted about 5 minutes into it. It was the epitome of awesomeness at the time, and I am eagerly awaiting the next installment in the series, though I'm still busy with 4. Diablo Another Blizzard game makes it here you say? Diablo was the driving force that got me into MMO/Dungeon Crawler types of games. It was so simple, yet you just...couldn't...put...it...down. It was as fun and rewarding as it was addictive (thats assuming you played with your friends). Alas though, I haven't picked it up in ages. The Elder Scrolls III : Morrowind I actually got this after hearing some good reviews from my friends around the neighborhood. Needless to say, I was happy I picked it up. It was and still is a very deep experience in the RPG genre that you can spend hundreds of hours with. SimCity Goddamn, I remember playing this on my old P.O.S. Windows 95 computer. Such a great experience, and everyone has played one SimCity at one point in their lives. I never have gotten to the 1 million mark, anyone know how to? |
Starcraft is also one of my favourite games. And it 's still fun making own campaigns. ^__^
I'm alredy looking frward for Starcraft 2. I also adore the C&C-Series and startet to play Tiberian Dawn again...man...this brings old memorys back.:D |
The classic Doom games (with and without sourceports) since I've done the most editing with it.
|
Between these 3 (not much of an MMORPG fan, don't like P2P stuff):
Classic Doom (awesome when it came out back in the day and I still love playing it since the episode 1 shareware came out). Half-Life series (constantly play these games even if I have beaten them a few times each. Can't wait for Episode Two) Counter-Strike Source (I love the mods they have for the game, especially GunGame, play that a lot, but also just like playing the usual game online as well) |
Outpost
It's my first simulation game. Dugeon seige Very addictable but quite down (for me) in the second one. |
Dungeon Keeper, anyone? Slapping imps, torturing (and converting) information-divulging heroes, finding weird combinations to cook up new things in the temple, breeding Reapers, feeding chickens to the dungeon denizens et cetera NEVER FELT SO GOOD. I spent countless hours playing that game, and the hours that I didn't, I fantasized about playing it.
I didn't quite enjoy its sequel, DK II, as much as the first one though. Too polished, too slick, and it didn't quite have the bad-ass appeal of its ancestor. Gotta owe it to Peter Molyneux and his Bullfrog (way before Lionhead Studios) for cooking up something that addictive. |
Dungeon Siege is a great choice. Holy crap that game is fun, especially with co-op play.
But the original Xwing takes the cake. I remember picking that game up just by seeing it in a Best Buy near its time of release. It was the first good 3D game that graced our family's PC. My dad was so skeptical of what the game showed on the back of the box. He was like, "You can buy it, but don't be surprised if game is not what it looks like n the box." I was a impluse-buying little kid and loved Star Wars and spent saved up money for the game; little did I know how amazing of a game I bought. I brought it home and nearly died when I saw I could go up against Star Destroyers and Tie's and flipping amazingness. I keep forgetting how awesome that game was, joysticks and all. |
The best game ever created for PC gaming is one that few have ever had the chance to enjoy: Grim Fandango
I made a thread for it a long time ago and I'm sure it's buried somewhere but yeah... This game was, by far, one of the reasons why I still believe that games can evoke visceral emotional responses with only the use of sharply-written dialogue, original characters and the oh-so-perfectly-fitting setting. Let's not forget the soundtrack, which I consider to be one of the best (if not THE best) video game soundtracks ever conceived. So many great memories. So many quotable phrases. Only ONE Manny Calavera. <3 Truly a gem in a time when designers like Carmack and Romero ran around in circles reinventing the wheel only to run themselves over with it. |

In terms of games played, I think it's safe to say that I've invested the most hours playing Ultima Online over the years. From when it came out until about 2002, I played UO in various forms, from payservers to free servers that emulaed the old pay servers. The true appeal of UO was that everyone who played was on the same footing, and there weren't advantages to certain classes or characters from the start. Obviously, you had to develop your character as you saw fit. But that's what was great about it -- you were in charge of how your character played, and there was no predetermined method. Also, FULL CORPSE LOOTING RIGHTS. Nothing like playing a game that makes you so tense and adrenaline pumped ... because if you die, all your stuff is going into your opponents bag. Unfortunately UO really lost a lot of it's lustre when EA took charge of Origin and kicked Lord British off the development team. Ultima Online 2 could have been an EverQuest killer, but EA decided to add all these shitty 3-D (but not quite 3-D) expansions for the current existing UO. Post-Renaissance I had stopped playing on the pay servers and moved over to one of the (then) largest emulated servers, and played there for another year or two before giving up the game in college (because my dorm didn't allow large back-and-forth packet transfers due to filesharing networks... lame). The only other game I can say I've played near as much as UO is World of Warcraft. While it's an amazing game in it's own right, I think there are a few too many nagging problems that really tarnish an otherwise super-enjoyable game. |
The best PC game of all time is without doubt Strike Commander.
I've yet to come across a flight sim that combined accurate flying physics with an actual plot so well as this. The graphics for the time were amazing, the characters were memorable and the flying was realistic but still fun. Nothing else has come close before or since in my opinion. |
