Sadness (Revolution)
Sadness is a Revolution title being developed by NIBRIS. It is going to be a "gothic" horror.
“All I can say now is that it [Sadness] is going to be a gothic horror which will scare not with the amount of blood but sheer atmosphere. Imagine a game in which you do not use guns or knives but you will have to protect yourself with the objects you find exploring the ground – a stone, a stick, etc.” “Some examples of using the controller – you swing a torch with it to scare the rats off, you slit the throat (controller as a piece of glass of a knife); if you want to climb the wall you will have to hook a rope over the piece of a wall sticking out (controller serving as a lasso). And this is only the beginning. The game will be for single player and single player only. For an adult player with strong nerves. Let me mention that the scenario will have associations with narcolepsy, nyctophobia and paranoid schizophrenia. The scenario will surprise you.” All I can say is, Nintendo is going to bust out of the "kiddie" mold with the Revolution. I will DEFINITELY get this game. Even if it doesn't live up to hype, it will STILL be fun. It'd probably be as if Shadowgate and Manhunt had an intimate love child. |
As positive about the Revolution as I am, I will have to wait to see the final product before I make any judgement about it.
|
This is intriguing, to say the least. I love when they combine the element of visual horror with the perturbances of the human mind. It's an effective mixture that produces nifty results even in a gaming environment - a blatant example of this is Silent Hill and its allusively sexual themes.
It's also exciting that this is being developed for the Revolution. A proper use of the innovative controller will no doubt make the experience much more immersive and of striking impact. |
Interesting indeed. That slitting of throats will come under a lot of scrutiny though, and might not be in the final game.
It just sounds like something a publisher is bound to shy away from, but then that depends on the publisher. Seeing as there doesn't seem to be a confirmed publisher as of yet, anything can happen. |
Definately sounds interesting. I thought Eternal Darkness was pretty creepy at times when I played it, but this sounds even better.
|
Sounds like Condemned but even better. When I get a Revolution, i'm defenitely going for this.
|
I agree, this game definately intrigues me and if it turns out half-way decent, it will be a buy in my books.
|
I'm still on the prowl for a good survival horror game, now that i'm done Resident Evil. I guess i'll take a stab at Silent Hill while i'm waiting for this one.
No screens? The description sounds pretty amazing, but no matter how good it sounds, it's still an advertisment, and is not to be trusted. |
Sounds like you'd need sufficient space to play.
I know I'm going to flailing the controller about wildly if it involves slitting throats of things that pop out of nowhere. |
The concept alone is fucking perfect for the Rev. Games like this will make the Rev the most worthwhile system on the market.
Throat-slitting sounds fun, but it will catch so much flak from cunts like Jack Thompson that it will most likely be removed in the end. Regardless, I am pumped, even if it is just an ad. |

If Nintendo is getting third party support to the extreme like this, then yes, the Revolution will at least finish second and may even prove to at least touch ground with Sony at the end of this cycle. |
Lets hope it translate from paper and onto the Revolution well. Glad we aren't seeing a typical thriller/horror game too!
|
This sounds like:
40% Eternal Darkness 30% Resident Evil 20% Gothic Inspired Mental Thriller 10% Snuff Movie I'm sold. |
Here's hoping they have enough power to create an atmosphere rival to that of Condemned. That game seems pretty scary.
But I think this game represents developers' opinions to Nintendo. Is it a good thing? Yah. The only problem with Nintendo's Gamecube were fanboys buying Nintendo only games (which pretty much pissed off third-parties). If this thread is any indication of Nintendo fans accepting third party games then yes, Sony'll have trouble. They seem to have trouble with PS3 atm. |

Especially if you're using shards of glass and other shit to kill creatures. Narcolepsy... schizophrenia.... COUNT ME IN. And, I think you're right. Sony MAY actually have trouble this time around. |
Shame that Silicon Knights ain't making a game for Revo... Eternal Darkness would've been SWEET on it (ED was severly underrated, IMO)
|
Sounds intiguing. While I'm not an avid fan of the survival horror genre, they do have an odd way of catching my eye when they're released.
The game definitely has me looking forward to the many uses this controller will have. It won't be long after the Revolution's launch that Sony and Microsoft will be releasing a new peripheral for their respective systems; one that promises to offer the same level of interactivity. |
I don't wanan say it's great yet without even seeing a single screenshot, (why don't you have some sort of a source or link Reznor? ) but I have to say that if this lives up to the impression conveyed from that quote (state to us by mystery-person), then it's gonna kick major ass.
...anyone still think the revo controler's a bad idea?:revolution: |

Wasn't there some Microsoft thing where they utilise some sort of remote control? See? The idea's being embraced by the other companies already! |
I sure hope it's not one of those horrible horror games where all you cet to weild is a meager flashlight. Fucking Luigi's Mansion...

The mistery person remark wasn't referring to you Reznor. It's just that your post didn't really state who said the comments in quotes. Was it one of the game desighners? Producer? President of the company? etc. Also, providing a link or a source with a story is just good internet etiquette come on now. Even renowned gaming sites provide some sort of a source unless they're personally interviewing someone. Anyway, thanks for the info, the game sounds sweet. :) |
Sounds like very good concepts for a horror game ^_^ especially
with the nifty controller. I can't wait to see screen shots or a demo. |

If you thought Luigi's mansion was an attempt at a horror game, then you're lost. The more and more i think about "Sadness" the more and more i think about how it's gonna look. The more i do that, the more i optimize it for my own tastes. The more than happens, the more i drift away from what the game is really gonna be, and opens the way for "WTF, this isn't what i had in mind at all." This is why i hate hearing about games before screens and the whatnot. |
This game is probably so far away that it's not even worth discussing.

New Details
Something about the storyline apparently... “...In my head there is a voice, different from the others. Whenever it answers it overwhelms the remaining voices, it mixes up thoughts and destroys peace. It tells me that I'm only mixed up in a thought which yearns to prove its own existence. The voice which whispers that I'm not really who I am and the perceived reality is only an abstraction created by my own mind. It is the original voice, which wants to free itself from my head, to free itself from the logic and reason it is being stifled by. The voice of animal endurance at all costs, which forces onto unimaginable things. It is the voice of chaos which is now screaming frightfully in my head for me to take an axe resting against the wall and cut off my father's head.” |
Wow. This reminds me of Condemned, but..even better.
And, I've never heard of NIBRIS before. Why, I don't know. I can't remember hearing that name, ever.. |

Sounds like a freaking excellent game, or at least has the potential to be. A definite buy, if it lives up to what it's promising.
The artwork looks very nice. The only reason NIBRIS (a new company in Poland, yes) has any hope, in my eyes. At the very least, the art they've released looks excellent. (the art can be found on revolutionreport.com) AND HOLY CRAP Just saw on revolutionreport that NIBRIS intends to make the game in black and white. Which sounds awesome to me. They distinctly said it wouldn't resemble the likes of Sin City, but I don't know why they felt they needed to point that out. When I think black and white, I think old silent films, not stylistic comicbook movies. |
The concept art looks nice...and I can see how the intention to make the game entirely in black and white would fit with the period and such. This game definitely sounds like it could be a good horror game. I can't wait until the end of this month, that's supposedly when some screens of Sadness should be out.
|
I think they wanted to say it would be a pure black and white game and not any little bits of color here and there like Sin City. Sin City is the closest we've had to a black and white film recently so that might be screwing with some people's definition of a black and white film. They didn't have to point it out but hey specifics are nice.

http://www.nibris.net/ I can see why they're revamping it. They seem to have about as many resources as a low-end mod team. They have a few ideas, some concept art...and that's it. I just don't understand why their games are getting so much hype, let alone being called awesome and better than other games, when there isn't really anything to show for them. It would make more sense to focus our attention on REAL projects that actually have work done on them. The fact that they don't have a publisher and were turned down by Nintendo is a bit concerning as well. |
What do you mean no work done? This is being developed, it's not just concept art and an idea. I am quite sure we will be hearing from them at e3.
|
"It would make more sense to focus our attention on REAL projects that actually have work done on them."
Like what? The only game we have any info on is Red Steel. We might as well get excited over nothing until E3 comes. And Raid Over the River and Sadness are both being developed, as far as I can tell. Even if they're not being developed yet, NIBRIS seems pretty serious about it, and word is getting out (quite well). They don't have a publisher yet, but they'll have something to show before too long, I have no doubts. Also, check revolutionreport.com. NIBRIS is revamping their website, and the redesign looks incredibly good. |
Reminds me of the launch title "Eternal Darkness" for GC: same type of game...
|
Eh, I don't ever remember them saying Eternal Darkness would be a launch title for cube, dude. It was originally supposed to be for N64 but then got moved to the cube. Way too much work involved for it to make launch especially for that perfectionist of a team.
|
|
Maybe the site revamp will have actual screenies at such, since it appears some games are now showable like Red Steel.
Either way the road to E3 is getting exciting. |
E3 is gonna be fucking fantastic. I can't wait. This, Red Steel, who knows WHAT else. Plus, there is still more that we don't know about the Revolution. I'm pumped.
|
E3 can't come fast enough. I would love to go, to be there myself, but hahaha, yeah that's never gonna happen.
There's so much i'm looking forward to, but this game is coming pretty close to topping everything else. |
Well, judging from Red Steel's screenshots it seems like Sadness shouldn't have trouble (graphically) in terms of creating atmosphere. Again, this is just speculation hey...
And for the first time, having touched every system but an Xbox, I tried a few xbox games today. An if, (according to IGN's sources) the Revo is Xbox power times 1.5 then there's no need to worry about Revo's power. My thoughts. Entitled to them. |

Never heard of it. I don't watch movies all that often.

From what I remember, it was also..a comic?
