List of Film & TV Composers in VGM

I've had an interest in this for awhile--composers who work primarily in film or TV that moonlight in VGM. I've compiled a little list based on my own memory that's far from complete, and I'm looking for help in fleshing it out. So, if you know of any film or TV composer that's done VGM work, please let me know and I'll add it to the list! Feel free to make your opinions about film/TV composers in VGM known too.

Note 1
When I say music, I mean "original music." I'm not interested in music by film or TV composers that was simply dropped into a game or adapted by somebody else (hence no listing of all the Star Wars games that use John Williams' themes).

Note 2
I'm thinking of spinning composers who work primarily in anime into a seperate list, since there are so very many, so hold onto those for now.

Uhm... at the very least (I'm sure there are way more) Koichi Sugiyama, Motoi Sakuraba, Yoko Shimomura, Nobuo Uematsu all did some work for film and/or TV as well. Also Michael Giacchino actually once started as a VGM composer (earliest work I know is Maui Mallard in Cold Shadow by Eurogames in 1996, but there may be earlier ones), and so did Yoko Kanno (much of Koei's output in late 1980's/early 1990's).

This thread seems to target composers (that primarly compose for Film and/or TV) VGM works.

Teioh Jan 17, 2007 03:06 PM

It will be difficult to define the difference between VGM and Film/TV/Anime composer in some cases.
Mark Morgan also started with game music I think but now he's doing only movie scores.
Joey Newman composed for Lineage 1.
As for anime composers who also worked on games, that's almost an impossible task.

edit: ehm okay. Though I still don't know whether Mark Morgan would be film, tv or game music composer.

Put Balls Jan 17, 2007 03:07 PM

David Bergeaud (of Ratchet & Clank series) started in the film industry.

This doesn't really help drawing a line though. E.g. Sakuraba did more TV works than game works between 1997 and 2002.

Rimo Jan 17, 2007 04:04 PM

I'm also interested by this kind of information. I'll try to contribute as much as I can, but not many come to mind right now. Here's a few:

Michael Nyman
Enemy Zero

Laura Karpman
EverQuest II

Harold Faltermeyer
Jack Orlando

Elia Cmiral
The Last Express

Good points. I wasn't aware that Kanno and Giacchino had started in VGM and moved to films, so I've removed them from the list. As far as Uematsu, Shimomura, Sakuraba, and Sugiyama are concerned, they're primarily VGM composers who've done a film/TV score or two and therefore not within the scope of ths list.

As far as I'm concerned, the definition is flexible. If you know of any gray areas, post them anyway!

This is true; you'll notice that the list has a Western bias for just that reason, though I'm not opposed to Eastern composers being on it; witness Sakamoto above.

niki Jan 17, 2007 04:53 PM

Ryuichi Sakamoto also worked on Tengai Makyo Ziria.

Pyocola Jan 17, 2007 05:23 PM

Hirasawa Susumu has done several anime film/TV soundtracks, but also the soundtrack to the first Berserk (DC) game, and the main theme for the second one (PS2). Though in the last 15 years I believe he's had more solo albums than soundtracks so it's kind of hard to classify him as a film/TV composer.

Kenji Kawai: Sansara Naga 2, Sangokushi Online, Nobunaga no Yabou Online

zzeroparticle Jan 18, 2007 12:42 AM

No Ootani Kow? He did the soundtrack to Wander and the Colossus in addition to doing two noteworthy anime series.

Hell, better add Michiru Oshima (Legend of Legaia, ICO) and Taku Iwasaki (one of the Cho Aniki games, Uncharted Waters Online) to the mix as well.

Thank God for IMDB to check all of these :)

I've added all the suggestions except Hirasawa Susumu and Inon Zur. I can't find enough information on Susumu, and Zur hasn't scored any film or TV projects since 2000--he's pretty much a full-time game composer now.

Also added Ennio Morricone (Red Dead Revolver) and Don Davis (The Matrix Online). I thought about adding Frederic Talgorn, but can't find any confirmation that he was involved with producing original music for Heavy Metal F.A.K.K.2.

Rimo Jan 18, 2007 01:20 PM

From what I know, the music in Red Dead Revolver isn't original. It was borrowed from various western movie scores.

I've found contradictory information. the RDR manual does credit a number of individual cues from movies, but also gives Morricone a "music by" credit, as does IMDB. Some sources say he composed original tunes, some put him in a "music supervisor" role, and others have it all tracked in. I'm not familiar enough with his body of work to know for sure. I'll do some more research on it.

Not interested in orchestrators unless they composed rather than arranged the music.

Definitely mainly a VGM composer this one.

I'm seriously considering spinning the anime composers off into their own thread. My experience is generally with Western composers, and the list looks like it could be deluged with anime composers. Would anyone be interested in maintaining such a thread?

I see what you mean here. I would like to second Takayuki Hattori from the list Taisai posted though as he is mainly known as a composer of film and TV series (non-anime) scores.

Teioh Jan 18, 2007 02:19 PM

You didn't add Joey Newman yet. Perhaps he's not famous enough, but he's the cousin of Thomas Newman. And Lineage is the only VGM he composed.
Does Mark Morgan fall flat? 6 out of his 21 works are VGM, so I'm not sure.
For Taku Iwasaki you can add Muv-Luv Alternative, he composed a small couple of tracks for the game, along with Hikaru Nanase, who goes by many names and aliases but is mainly anime composer.

Really? I thought his main area after joining IMAGINE was anime...though without a doubt he is more known for VGM works. Anyway, I totally understood it.

I see the point. So, maybe only Takayuki Hattori, Kousuke Yamashita, Yuko Fukushima are worth listing from mine.

orion_mk3 Jan 18, 2007 06:44 PM

List's been updated. Ennio Morricone was removed; upon further research, it seems that, despite his "music by" credit, his material was almost certainly non-original; it's not listed on the composer's official website.

Added Bill Conti, Stewart Copeland, Yuko Fukushima, Rupert Gregson-Williams, Steve Jablonsky, Mark Mothersbaugh, Joel McNeely, Joey Newman, Graeme Revell, and Kousuke Yamashita

Trevor Jones: marvel nemesis

DMK Jan 19, 2007 07:38 AM

Christopher Lennertz: (in the first place he is working on Films, like Saint Sinner, Undercurrent, Supernatural Pilot Episode)
James Bond 007: From Russia with Love

187 Ride or Die
Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault
Medal of Honor: Rising Sun

James Dooley
SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Combined Assault
SOCOM 3: U.S. Navy SEALs
Dead to Rights II

Klaus Badelt: (I think that doesn't count, since he was only music arranger)
Firefighter F.D.14 (only music arranger/composer was Norikazu Miura)

Bill Brown:(atm he's working on CSI:NY, so I think he counts more as a TV-Composer than a VGM composer)
Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Undying
...

Looked this one up; according to the game's credits, it's a non-original piece.

I considered Bill Brown for the first list I put up; however, he got his start writing VGM and has only recently moved into film and TV music. Lennertz and Dooley, though, have only done a few games apiece and started in TV, so I'll add them.

DMK Jan 19, 2007 01:04 PM

There also is
Eric Serra:
New York Race

(The Game is based on the film, the 5th elment, but serra composed completely new music for the game. the music isn't even based on the themes of the film)

Drakken Jan 19, 2007 02:38 PM

I finally discovered who composed the music for one of my favorite game soundtracks of all time, Dr. Brain Action Reaction (I kid you not).

Giorgio Bertuccelli
Michael Skloff

Never heard of them, but then, I've never heard of most non-vgm composers. Skloff's worked on a bunch of TV series according to IMDB, and Bertuccelli's done some TV series as well as a couple Italian movies.

I wish I knew if they composed for any other games. The funny thing is that the music never even played in the game for whatever reason, but it's on the disc as Redbook Audio.

It's not muted, but I didn't hear anything. It's a shame; I was hoping to be able to call the songs something other than Track 1, Track 2, and so on.

Well, IMDB confirms that they are indeed film/TV composers, albeit obscure ones, so they're on the list now :)

Mr. X Jan 20, 2007 01:24 PM

I've extensively researched Hayato Matsuo and he is definitely more of an anime composer than a VGM one. Koichi Sugiyama may have given him his start, but since 1993, it's mostly been anime from him. He's done quite a few vocal albums as well.

Interesting thread. Keep it up!

Tappy Jan 20, 2007 03:10 PM

Let's not forget the amazing mister Snow!:p

Mark Snow
~ Syphon Filter - The Omega Strain
~ Syphon Filter - Dark Mirror

And a few more:

Joris De Man (former tv composer)
~ Killzone

Steve Jablonsky
~ Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars

Sean Callery
~ 24 The Game
~ James Bond - Everything Or Nothing

Justin Burnett
~ Metal Gear Solid 2
~ Metal Gear Solid 3

Yuki Kajiura (EDIT: I see Taisai mentioned her, but she isn't in your list yet)
~ Xenosaga II
~ Xenosaga III

BTW....the music Joel McNeely composed for Shadows Of The Empire, weren't specifically written for the videogame.
So I don't think he should be in this list!!
(It was a soundtrack based on the novel, the VG came later)

Rimo Jan 20, 2007 03:27 PM

Oh yes, Mark Snow! He also did the music for another game -> Urban Assault. He is also credited for the music in the X-Files game, but I wonder if it's new materail or recycled cues?

Not sure. Anyone care to step forward with more information?

Steve Jablonsky is already on the list. I wasn't even aware that there were any 24 games; Callery's going up too. Can't find enough info on Joris de Man; he's only got two IMDB credits.

That's because she's primarily an anime composer, and I've been largely leaving them off the list because they were threatening to swamp it.

- My Lover Is a Sniper: The Movie (2004)
- Missing Pages (2006)

Another one for you, orion. I recently ripped Bo Jackson's Hit and Run! Baseball and Football (GB) and found that Ed Bogas composed the music for it. Apparently, he's a pretty well-known TV and film composer who's worked on a lot of animated stuff (such as Peanuts and Garfield specials). That's according to his Wikipedia entry and his website.

Here's the Mobygames listing of other titles he's worked on, for the curious.

Fascinating. According to that filmography, he scored both Garfield and Fritz the Cat. There's something deeply wrong with that :)

orion_mk3 Jan 24, 2007 12:36 PM

Manthei and Moore are both very tempting, but their resumés indicate that both started in VGM before branching out later into other arenas, and that the largest amount of their work is still for VGM.

I've begun adding links to the main list, to help people track down and listen to these OSTs and gamerips. If anyone has any stable URL's they can contribute, that would be super.

Drakken Jan 24, 2007 03:40 PM

As there are a bunch of Dr. Brain games, you should specify that the one Giorgio Bertuccelli and Michael Skloff worked on is Dr. Brain: Action Reaction.

The GreyFox Jan 24, 2007 08:04 PM

Dayum, I would have thought Manthei was at least borderline acceptable. It seems he started out doing additional music for television shows and a videogame within the same year.

But here's one which I think should be okay:

John Carpenter:
Sentinel Returns

I think it's the only videogame John worked on, and that came out in 1998 for the PC. Perhaps Rimo (who did a rip of this game) could shed more light on the music. It's all original material, as far as I'm concerned.

Ah yes, he indeed did the music for Sentinel Returns. The game also came out for the PSX (the version I ripped the music from). Another person was involved in the music, only as an arranger though, which is Gary McKill. He was part of the in-house sound team at Psygnosis at that time, having composed music for Wipeout 3, Colony Wars 2-3 and Destruction Derby Raw to name a few. I don't know what he has become nowadays though.

That link is wrong. It's from Battlefield 2 (PC). RG-W actually did Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (X-Box, PS 2) and not Battlefield 2 (PC).

You don't by any chance have a link that can replace it, do you?

orion_mk3 Feb 15, 2007 07:32 PM

Thanks to Rimo's latest rip, Eric Serra has been removed from the list along with the link to New York Race.

I see that Ramin Djawadi, best known for his collaborations with Hans Zimmer, is listed in the "sound department" for Thief II. Can anyone confirm if he did, or did not, write any music for the game?

Added a bunch of Zimmerites to the list. Trevor Morris, with credits for "Need for Speed: Carbon" and a co-composer credit on "Command and Conquer 3;" Lorne Balfe as co-composer on "Battlefield 2: Modern Combat." Also Alf Clausen, who is not a Zimmerite but was replaced by them, for "The Simpsons: Cartoon Studio."

DVDRicks gamerip is on MrJoys FTP

John Debney (Sin City, The Passion of the Christ) will score Lair from the studio Factor 5 (Turrican). I find it a bit strage that Debney scores it and not Factor 5s common composer Chris Hülsbeck.
Also, Geoff Zanelli (Secret Window, Into the West) wrote additional music for Champions of Norrath.

EDIT: Well, another one: Paul Haslinger (Underworld) - Far Cry Instincts/Far Cry Predator, Rainbow Six Vegas. You can listen to those 3 scores on http://www.haslinger.com/

Stefan_L Feb 17, 2007 07:14 PM

Jan Hammer did music for Police Quest 3.

Also Brian May did music for the "Rise of the Robots" games but i guess he is not primarily an TV/film composer even if Queen did music for the Highlander and Flash Gordon films.

orion_mk3 Feb 19, 2007 12:40 PM

Fantastic new finds, especially Debney. I really hope he pulls off something spectacular!

Added Debney, Hammer, Haslinger, Hammer, May, and Zanelli to the list.

Stefan_L, as far as Brian May is concerned, there are actually two artists by that name, the famous rocker and a respected Australian film/TV composer. Are you sure that the "Rise of the Robots" score was by the rocker?

Basil Feb 19, 2007 01:26 PM

According to MobyGames he wasn't heavily involved.

Quote:

Although the back cover of the case claims that Rise had "original score by legendary rock guitarist Brian May" this can be considered a scam, since the only Brian May music you hear in the game is an approximately 5-seconds long guitar solo at the beggining

orion_mk3 Feb 19, 2007 01:31 PM

Ah, good to know. May's been removed from the list.

Christopher Stone:
Dragon's Lair 3D: Return to the Lair

orion_mk3 Feb 22, 2007 08:51 PM

Interesting aside: according to Wikipedia, Brian May did in fact compose a score, but it was left out at the last minute due to legal wrangling in order to make the title's launch date.

Stone Cold Chris Stone's been added to the list.

Basil Feb 22, 2007 09:04 PM

Hmm, maybe you could re-add it as a rejected score then? Just a thought.

Stefan_L Feb 23, 2007 07:38 PM

Brian May did more music for the sequel "Rise 2: Resurrection"... can be read at the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rise_of_the_Robots

orion_mk3 Mar 2, 2007 12:06 AM

Added Barrington Pheloung to the list, whith scores for "In Cold Blood," "Broken Sword, and "Broken Sword II."

After careful research, I've come to the conclusion that Brian May is probably more of a mainstream musician/performer than a film/tv composer. Though if anyone has a link to a rip of his rejected RotR score, or RotR2 score, I think it would be cool to hear.

I've also managed to do a mostly-complete rip of Ottman's IHNMAIMS, if anyone wants it.

That's the same reason that Inon Zur and Yoko Kanno aren't on the list.

An update, I know some more:

Alongside Jan Hammer, Sierra had Craig Safan work on Leisure Suit Larry 5 (his most famous movie score was "The Last Starfighter").

Also, Hollywood composer Chuck Barth composed the Dynamix game "RAMA".

Oh yeah, William Goldstein did the music for "King's Quest IV".

Finally, noone's sure, but Michel Legrand was rumoured to have worked on "Torin's Passage", too. I'm gonna ring a composer I know who worked on it, the excellent David Henry, in a few hours and ask him.

Confirmed, Legrand worked on Torin's Passage, composed the original melodies for it. It was arranged by someone else (David Henry) though.

Richard Band:

Stonekeep (cinematics)
Conquest of the New World
Casper
Waterwold (cinematics)
Clay Fighter 63 1/3 (co-composer)
Star Trek Pinball
Descent to Undermountain (co-composer)
Planescape: Torment (co-composer)
Invictus: In the Shadow of Olympus

Started in the film-scoring industry with Joel Goldsmith, creating the score to "Laserblast" (1978). Did several other film works and later started in the game industry in the '90s, working at Interplay.

orion_mk3 Jun 21, 2007 07:01 PM

The list has been updated.

Band also co-wrote "Star Trek: Judgment Rites," which I have been meaning to try and rip for awhile.

Rimo Jun 21, 2007 08:49 PM

Indeed, but the reason I haven't included that game in the list is because, as far as I know, he was only responsible for a rendition of the main Star Trek theme, which doesn't look to be an original work. A bit like the LucasArts composers who included John Williams' "Star Wars" themes and aren't listed here for that reason (or John Williams himself). If you prefer to include this entry anyway, it's cool, since he is still credited for that game.

orion_mk3 Jun 22, 2007 11:16 AM

Were you able to find a credits breakdown? All I've ever seen is a list.
