God Of War 2

IGN's New Hands-On Preview & Video Interview:
http://ps2.ign.com/articles/755/755391p1.html

Just head to the videos section of the article to see 4 new clips from the beginning of the game featuring Kratos taking on a colossus. The boss fight looks insane.

On a related note, to coincide with the release of GoW2 NECA is producing a 7" figure of Kratos in 2 versions:
http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/1120/380dy5.jpg

Standard Version
http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/8...6500x47it3.jpg
This version includes...
  • The Blades of Chaos.
  • 2 flaming arching chains which the blades can attach to.
  • Different head sculpt - "Aggressive, Open Mouthed" expression.

Golden Fleece Armor
http://img483.imageshack.us/img483/9...500x466ej3.jpg
The Golden Fleece Armor version of Kratos is based on his look in GoW2 and includes the following...
  • The Blades of Chaos.
  • Interchangeable right arm with the Golden Fleece Armor.
  • Interchangeable right hand holding Medusa's Head.
  • Different head sculpt - "Serious, Closed Mouth" expression.
http://img483.imageshack.us/img483/1...500x475kp8.jpg

The idea also is that with both versions you can mix and match accessories and parts between the 2 also.

Anyways I loved the first game and I'm pumped for GoW2!

Kloak Jan 14, 2007 01:08 PM

Wow man i cannot WAIT for this game...I'm so glad this game is for PS2...and only 2 days before my birthday ^_^

Godai Jan 14, 2007 05:03 PM

Can't wait. I love that newer cover, there was that crappy cover that was going around that people thought was final, but this is much better. Is the game actually 2 discs or is the 2nd disc just bonus content?

Oh, and I want that figure. :)

sabbey Jan 14, 2007 07:00 PM

Cool news, but still have the original to play since buying it months ago...

Oh well, looking forward to playing both, actually! ;)

You mean this one?
http://www.freeimagehosting.net/uploads/cf77a9ec3e.jpg

I must admit I do that like that artwork above but yeah the one they went with is the better of the two especially since the rejected one looks awfully similiar to GoW1's cover art. Still perhaps GoW2's sleeve will be reversible like the first game's sleeve to feature both artworks. :)

The game is only 1 disc. The second disc is all bonus content including a documentary that charts the game's development from the very beginning to completetion. Best of all the 2 disc set is the standard one and only edition that'll be available so no having to shell out an extra $10 for bonus content like most sets.

I'm just curious if they'll offer GoW2's soundtrack free again and if they do hopefully do so via a means that actually works.

Wicked trailer with some amazing visuals even for the PS2. :)

The game is also officially complete with just the last stages of QA to go before going gold and mass production, making the game ready to hit shelves on March 13th.

wow,nice trailer,I can't wait to play it

Cyrus Jan 30, 2007 03:13 PM

Hmm, I hope they fix the screen tearing issues this time. Apart from that, God of War looked pretty impressive in progressive scan.

Not sure if it'll fix the issue but God Of War II has been optimised for HDTVs as well supporting 'Widescreen' and 'Progressive' according to Cory Barlog, GoWII's director, and David Jaffe.

Looks like EBgames/GameStop is already beginning to promote GoWII:

Playable demos are going out next month. I just wish I knew about the demo offer sooner as I would of had this in the mailbox within the next 1-2 weeks...:(

TheXeno Jan 30, 2007 09:53 PM

The director is signing copies of the demo and sending them to people if you sent him your address like a month ago through his blog. Luckily i was browsing so I'll get a copy. I don't think hes accepting emails for it anymore though. I watched the trailer yesterday and was really impressed I'm sure the game will be at least as good as the first one. Also one starts out with the Blades of Athena and Posidens Rage.

link to the game directors blog btw http://corybarlog.blogspot.com/

Yeah I know. Sadly I didn't keep tabs on Barlog's blog so I missed out on the chance unlike the GoW1 demo from Jaffe. Still it seems this kind of thing would be the perfect thing to distribute via the Playstation Network.

Seems like the press have got the demo though, what with GameTrailers and such posting videos. Here's the full run through of the demo from the excellent opening intro to the end title:
Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

I'm fiending for this game so much that the 5 week wait is almost unbearable.

Dave1988 Feb 4, 2007 05:11 PM

Is there a chance that you will share this demo with a broader audience TheXeno? ;)

I give it a week before it surfaces on torrent sites.

More than likely, especially with more and more press and sites getting the review code as well. The only downside of course being that the game is still going through the final stages of QA with the removal of any final bugs and glitches which I'd imagine won't be in the review code pictured there given the date, along with the final game being on one disc and not two.

New gameplay clip for anyone interested featuring Pegasus:
http://www.gametrailers.com/player.p...e=wmv&id=16885

Some Hi-Res screenshots too:
http://www.jeux-france.com/news19126...-les-airs.html

In other GoW news, the New York Toy Fair is this weekend where NECA will be showing off the two 7" figures of Kratos but will also unveil the big 13" version too that's supposed to come with an assortment of accessories and be quite impressive. :)

Elixir Feb 9, 2007 04:17 AM

No, I'm pretty sure the person (from the picture above) won't be getting it on a torrent. Just trust me on this one.

It's going to be a great game anyhow. I can't wait. Although I'm a sucker for mindless hack n slash types (Otogi, Bujingai, etc) it's still gonna be awesome.

IGN Review - 9.7

Interesting tidbit from the review -
Quote:

The last two things that we want to talk about unfortunately can't be tested yet as we won't have the boxed copy of the game for a few weeks (though what we've reviewed is the final code), though neither would alter the score in any fashion anyway and we want to point them out. The first is that God of War II will not only be playable on the PlayStation 3, of course, but that it will run at a true HD resolution of 720p. We're unsure as of yet whether or not we'll see additional texture detail because of this, but we'll update this section of the review when we can test it.

Secondly, God of War II will ship as a two-disc set with the entire second DVD dedicated solely to bonus content, like a behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of the game. Again, as is the case with the 720p support, we'll update this section with details when we have the second disc in our hands.

Simo Feb 12, 2007 03:55 PM

Unfortunately it's only 480p not 720. IGN got their facts a little mixed up and as such updated their review.

1UP.com has their review up too:
http://www.1up.com/do/reviewPage?cId=3157112
Quote:

When a prerelease God of War 2 demo first arrived at 1UP, the only "secret" we uncovered after two hours of searching was a statue of a small boy peeing in the bathhouse. On its own, this wasn't much of anything, but given the franchise's history of earning its Mature rating, it seemed to hint at something more.

So when the full game arrived for review, we headed back to that statue to see if anything had changed, and...well...it looked about the same. But the statue was joined by two topless ladies waiting for Kratos to Circle-button them, and if you choose to go that route, the camera zooms in on the statue and the boy's stream stops and starts while you hear various noises.

Yes, God of War is back.
Also the official site is now up:

dagget Mar 14, 2007 01:30 AM

Just picked this up about an hour ago. I watched the DVD first (because I'm a special features kind of guy) and there were some pretty interesting things on there like the concept art and lost levels. (Pretty much some of the same stuff that was on the first game)

I got a chance to play just a few minutes of it before I turned it off before heading to bed and I really enjoy what I've played so far. The game looks so much better than the first. I can already tell that this is going to eat away at alot of my time.

Upon further playing, this game is simply amazing. From what I understand the beginning of the game is about like the demo. (I think in the first demo you could kill the Hydra, but not really sure about that.)

The story just picks up after the first one where there's a war raging and Kratos goes down to finish it. You have a couple of weapons and powers left over from the first game but then it just gets awesome when
Spoiler:
Athena takes some of Kratos' power and transfers it to the Titan/Colossus

Then it just gets better as
Spoiler:
When Kratos has problems trying to slay the Titan, Zeus then offers Kratos the Sword of Olympus and tells him to put all his power into the sword to defeat the Titan
from there it's just one wild ride after another.
Spoiler:
Especially when Zues kills Kratos and tells him that he will never be ruler of Olympus

I'm actually stuck at a puzzle and it is pissing me off, bad.

Spoiler:
After you get Pegasus and fly around, slashing Gryffons and all that, you get to a Titan who knocks you out of the air and his hand slams on pegasus, trying to crush it. You have to figure a way to get the Pegasus out. It involves hitting his hands, but if you stop attacking each finger, then the finger slams back down. It's really annoying me and pissing me off.

I've tried to contain everything that could be a huge spoiler in tags :P

I can't wait to play some more of this game, really.

I might actually try to write an FAQ for this or something once I start playing it and knowing what to do.

Soldier Mar 14, 2007 03:16 PM

I just got home with my copy, played about 2 hours worth. That was one of the longest first levels ever.

I'm going to refrain from spoiling too much, if anything, on this game, because talking about the level layout or battles would really ruin the fun of discovering them yourself. There are very, very few games that can mimic the intensity of GoW2's boss encounters. They are epic, lengthy, and really force Kratos (and you) to work his ass off to take them down. As I mentioned before, this is the one thing that I truly hope will become a growing trend in future games: more epic battles that make you feel like you're truly fighting for your life.

Two minor complaints so far. One, there's still a substantial amount of tearing that really smears the slick graphics. Visually the game isn't a big step up from the previous game, with a few exceptions (clouds in Pegasus level=holy crap). People in GAF have reported that playing the game on the PS3 offers a noticable improvement, so I'll try that later.

The other complaint was based on unconfirmed expectations from me.

Spoiler:
When they mentioned how you would start the game "with your Godly powers", I thought I would get to wreck the city a bit as Giant Kratos. Sadly, all you get are maxed out chain blades and a weaker Rage of Poseidon.

This is going to be a lot of fun. Also, kindly inform me when the soundtrack is available on someone's FTP.

Simo Mar 14, 2007 05:09 PM

Got my copy today and just finished the first level...WOW.

Aside from looking like one of the, or perhaps THE, best looking PS2 titles the first level was just epic. One thing that wasn't in the demo but in the final game comes courtesy of the obligatory sex minigame in the bathhouse that brought a LOL to how it's "portrayed" and such.

Now I can't wait to give a Pegasus a try and the tidbit of Harry Hamlin reprising his role from Clash Of The Titans has me giddy.

Soldier Mar 14, 2007 07:26 PM

I totally missed that sex scene the first time, just like with the first game. Don't play that part around your family nearby, because even the moaning will raise some eyebrows. :/

I still think Shadow of the Colossus holds the record for prettiest PS2 game ever, but one small graphical effect that really impressed me was

Spoiler:
Prometheus' regenerating intestines.

Looked surprisingly life-like.

Also, playing on the PS3 does seem to make the game look a little cleaner, but it's not a major difference. I would need side-by-side comparisons to be certain. I think I'll play on PS2 first for the rumble.

immp Mar 14, 2007 11:15 PM

I'm loving it so far. The new moves and weapons feel really nice.

One complaint. In the story early on...
Spoiler:
When he encounters zues he does nothing but badmouth the gods and for some reason he is surprised when they "betray" him? All that stuff seems a bit mixed up.

Enter User Name Mar 14, 2007 11:23 PM

Last night, I just finished through playing GOW1 again for the first time since I got the game 2 years ago. Today, I played a couple hours of GOW2, and in all honesty, I like God of War 1 a lot more. Don't get me wrong, I do like this game, but there are things about GOW1 that I like more. I think the whole atmosphere is better in GOW1 than I have seen in this game so far. I don't really care much of the story in the game yet much either. And the music in GOW1 seemed much better than what I have heard so far in this game.

Like I said, I'm only a couple hours in, and although I think it is a good game, I am a little bit disappointed. I hope it gets better.

Godai Mar 15, 2007 01:55 AM

I just beat the game! Easily the best game I've played this year and a sensational follow-up. Those boss battles were awesome! :D

Soldier Mar 15, 2007 03:13 PM

Did you forego sleep or something? People said this game was twice as long as the original, and it's only been out a day.

Wow, was the sequence where
Spoiler:
The Steeds of Time start up and pull the two islands together
realtime? Because if so.....wow.

Seemed like a prerendered cinematic using the in-game engine but with how good the graphics look it's hard to tell. That was an awesome and jaw dropping moment though.

BTW did anyone else check out the reverse sleeve with the packaging? Looks like we get the best of both worlds in terms of the NTSC/PAL artwork. :)

Soldier Mar 15, 2007 03:39 PM

Right now my only big complaint is that so far, most of the enemies are carried over from the previous game, or just rehashes of the original monsters. I'm still in the area that I spoiler tagged, but I hope there will be plenty of original opponents aside from the bosses.

I'm a little past there after getting...
Spoiler:
The Amulet/Sphere of the Fates which allows you to slow down time...

....and some enemies from the first game crop up along with some new cool ones too especially if you remember the old Harryhausen Clash Of The Titans/Jason & The Argonaughts. ;)

Right now I just defeated...
Spoiler:
The Barbarian King from the first game and received my first sub weapon: The Barbarian's Hammer. Awesome weapon with some great damage.

I never saw the movie, so the reference is lost on me. :(

I just keep hoping a certain Herculian hero makes an appearance. And it would freaking rock if Kevin Sorbo did the voice. If anyone can give Kratos a run for his money....

I'm thinking of picking this up, save for one issue:

In the original God of War, when you finish the game, everything that you did will be erased when you start a new game. Does GoW2 allow carrying over items/experience/whatever when you start a new game?

Yes. GoWII has a "New Game+" where you get to keep all your abilities and upgrades from you've unlocked to a new game. Also there are extra items, Urns of Power I believe, placed throughout the game during the "New Game+" to help unlock more features.

Basically skeletons with swords which were actually going to be in the first game but Jaffe scrapped them because they seemed too obvious and boring an enemy due to those Harryhausen flicks. Although being further in the game the new enemies seem to coming out in droves now.

Speaking about Harryhausen and Clash Of The Titans, regarding Perseus...
Spoiler:
That was a good battle but the final blow was such a great payoff, not to mention a really brutal way to go. :D

Dark Nation Mar 23, 2007 04:24 AM

Hey Hey, just picked up the game last night, and boy its been real fun so far. I got stuck in a couple parts but only bogged down to looking at a FAQ for one part.

Currently I am at:
Spoiler:
Kratos's enemy, the bearded guy on the horse in the swamp, who just won't die

The bonus features are especially interesting for me, as a prospective game designer, so I'll definetly check it out after I beat the game... now back to beating down this ugly mofo.

LS Mar 23, 2007 08:05 AM

That boss is actually easy, i had problems regarding the one that simo talked about.

Anywho the easiest solution was i leveled my blade til level 3, and leveled my Bane to level 2, just R1+square and L2+triangle, Also wait for the incoming summon of that guy haha.

immp Mar 23, 2007 11:36 AM

I dunno about anyone else but I think this game was meant to be played on God(hard) mode. I played about 2 chapters on spartan(normal) mode and found there was never any threat of death in any of the battles. I'm almost done the game now on hard mode and I must say its a ton more satisfying. Sure you die like 4 - 11 times on every boss, but that just makes the way kratos finishes them off all the more pleasing. You must try it.

Pretty much the mode I've been playing it on. God Mode seems like it's more suited for GoW vets while Spartan is for those who missed out on the first game but ultimately it's whatever you're comfortable with. :)

I haven't had a chance to play for 2 or 3 days which means no I haven't completed it and I'm currently at...
Spoiler:
the Palace of the Fates with the Phoenix Ashes challenge.

jb1234 Mar 23, 2007 08:36 PM

I played about half of the game on Normal but got stuck on one of the battles so I gave in and switched to Easy. And it really WAS Easy from that point on. I'll probably replay the game on a higher difficulty level for the satisfaction. ;)

Funny enough a couple minutes after that battle I beat him, as I figured out the 'strategy' (Blocking and Counter-Attack), although the lightning did come in handy.

Simo Mar 24, 2007 11:05 AM

Just completed it. Excellent, excellent game where the visuals never failed to impress and the action along with all the boss fights that kept the game being challenging and gruesomely rewarding. The only problem now is that I'm left to wait at the very least 2 years for God Of War III... :gonkmelt:

Now I've just got give the Challenge mode a whirl and replay the game to get all the urns which I've already found one of.

I'm just a little perplexed about one thing though because the instruction booklet notes Cam Clarke voicing Hercules...
Spoiler:
..and yet he is nowhere to be found in the game, so what's the deal? Hopefully they'll throw him in GoWIII for an encounter...

...along with Achilles and heck, if you can get Harry Hamlin to reprise his role from Clash Of The Titans for GoWII then how about trying to get Gerard Butler for Leonidas? ;)

I think I'm going to look into getting the LE guide next week plus the 2 versions of the Kratos figure are supposed arrive then too which I'll post some snaps of when I get 'em.

Sexninja Mar 24, 2007 01:34 PM

Simo, the answer to your question
Spoiler:
heracles
, is THAT BLACK FIGURE you fought and killed . The same spartan that also survives in the beginning. You can also unlock him after finishing the game, in titan mode, as alternate costume along with
Spoiler:
athena
.
People who have read GreekMyth had no problem figuring that out.

Moreover the spear guy name is also not mentioned but he also is Greek hero i.e
Spoiler:
Theseus
.

Game is stunning the architecture, art design and levels.
I loved the bosses and how gruesomely kratos kills them, excellent fatalities.

One question
What are the contents of second dvd?
(is there any concept art, music samples , how much content is there, i am more interested in concept arts).

Haven't watched all the DVD but there are like 3 or 4 documentaries about the concept art for the game be it the creation of Kratos, the environments, enemies, the creation of Zeus and the bosses. There's also a doc for the music of the game with interviews.

Tight find man!
Can't wait to have more of this series. Well the PSP version is coming this year, but i am wondering why there is PS2 logo there?
Also it could be European release ad campaign.

Simo:
Spoiler:
Well yes he was supposed to but the game has fictionalized Greekmyth, some of the greek parts are there , other are heavily modified(for good,Greekmyth can't get more creative and exciting like this). So its its their version.
Myths aren't about sense i guess. I was wondering and even asked someone that how could Titans can have sex with human, giving birth to human child. What is the sex process?
Some said that titans could take human form but nothing is concrete .

There are many sons of zeus and kronos, almost all of them are brothers and sisters, its quite complicated, they all haven't got importance and attention atleast in this story so hercules importance is not the case here, kratos is more important.
Where hercules always gets attention in other stories, here he is not the star but kratos is and i liked it.
In other stories kratos is not even mentioned, only after gow1 i found his existenz.
Come to think of it Threesisters of fate, athena, ares all are even children of zeus.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeus
Also do check the pics i attached and the wikipedia entry of gow2 for extra tidbits, in case you have missed.Take note of the bosses you wil face in gow3.
4 of them standing in the final FMV

Well yes he was supposed to but the game has fictionalized Greekmyth, some of the greek parts are there , other are heavily modified(for good,Greekmyth can't get more creative and exciting like this). So its its their version.
Myths aren't about sense i guess. I was wondering and even asked someone that how could Titans can have sex with human, giving birth to human child. What is the sex process?

I know but Hercules is just an important character as Zeus in all respects since the majority of people are more likely to know who Hercules is over say Perseus. Heck the Spartans are supposed to of descended from Hercules himself so it seems highly unlikely...
Spoiler:
...that the last Spartan Kratos commands and fights is Hercules. That and the bonus Hercules costume basically rules out the last Spartan anyways.

So again, where is Hercules in GoWII?

Reading other boards/forums, all gamers are confused. Whether he is or not, gamers are fighting.
Things to get noted

Camclarke voiced him.
He is crdited.
Maybe he was cut out in last second.
I never checked the model (alt. costume), so i was under wrong impression.
Do you have any pic the costume anyway?
There is no other guess , but my final guess would be that he will appear in PSP game.
Maybe the voices have been already recorded for PSP version too.

Here's a YouTube video of the costume:

I'm wondering if he's actually one of the challenges for the Challenge of the Titans or whatever the uber challenge mode you can unlock is called.

Anyways I did come across some excellent concept art for GoWII by Andy Park:

I think I'll need to check out the LE guide on Wednesday for the artbook.

Update: came across this http://andyparkart.blogspot.com/
This pic is from here so , i think i have no other way to get this artbook other than requesting yout , if you can scan but 112 pages?

The concept art is from Andy Park's official site:
http://www.andyparkart.com

Not everything is there and naturally more is in the artbook and then some considering the other artists involved.

The second DVD with the game has no Art Gallery feature but several documentaries about the art design where you get glimpses of various pieces of artwork. So really it seems the LE guide is your best bet to get all your GoWII art needs.

I have to say I love the game, I finished it on god mode in about 11 hours or so, and I'm probably about a quarter of the way through it on titan mode. The challenge of the fates is a nice touch, but not as long as the first GOW's challenge of the gods. I don't think it's as challenging either.

Sexninja Mar 28, 2007 05:14 AM

Hey Simo from where i can order this guide online, how much it cost?

eprox1 Apr 13, 2007 10:18 AM

Hmmm...you guys remember that Island of Rhodes website with the 'countdown' I posted on the previous page? It finally finished, but I guess is a total letdown. Everyone thought it would be some big announcement for the next God of War game, but it seems to be only behind the scenes bonuses. Oh well.

Anyways, I guess deep in the website is a hidden code to unlock an HD mode for the game:
Quote:

"As the game boots up, before even the white text 'SCEA Presents' Legal screen comes up. Hold down L1 + L2 + L3 (thumbstick button) + Square + Circle simultaneously. If you did it right the legal screen will show up in a nice shade of purple. If you want to run in 480p you are still going to need to set that up through the menus as you do normally. This cheat will work on the PS2 and also the PS3. If you are doing this on the PS3 you may need to plug the controller in using the USB cable, as the controller is a little slow to come to life when the game boots."
I'm back at school now, and am not anywhere near my HDTV back home, so someone should definetly test this out to confirm it. I haven't played through the game yet, and would absolutley love to do this in HD.

EDIT:
Hmm. Guess it does work, but a lot of people experience slowdown when implementing this on their PS2, as it is meant for people with a PS3. Bitchin'.

Inhert Apr 13, 2007 10:28 AM

go check gametrailers.com there's a video that shows the beginning of the game in HD. It look pretty good, but I don't like that they're saying it will slow down the game, I don't know GoW2 doesn't seem to be the kind of game that you want some slow down...anyway we'll have to see how much slower it is ^^

Slayer X Apr 13, 2007 02:07 PM

The mode really is meant for the PS3 and not so much the PS2 though it can be done. The PS2 hardware in the PS3 shares the PS3's memory allowing much more fluid gameplay in many games from GoW2, to BLACK.

Secondly when you pass the HD description part of the site, when you hit the proceed button it takes you to another puzzel. After dolving this one it leads to another counter that expires in 10 days and a bit with what appears to be the title of a new GoW game. If it's the PSP one or GoW3 it is still unknown, though my money is on it being for the PSP one.

Simo Apr 13, 2007 02:35 PM

Bah! What a letdown. I was hoping it would of been some official goods on the PSP title...:><:

EBgames or GameStop.com sells them but given your location Amazon.com might be your best bet since they sometimes send books internationally. The LE guide retails for $29.99 plus there'll be the shipping too.

Anyways after the first shipment was sold out instantly along with the second wave sold out last week, my Kratos figures finally arrived yesterday! :D

TONS of articulation and one the best mass produced paint jobs to date. Suffice to say it's the best figure NECA have put out to date and I can't wait for the 12" version. :)

See, I've been reading all about this stuff, thats why I know of it, but I can't find it for shit. Not even the 'HD Code'. I heard about this other hidden countdown, but can't find shit. I get a screen that shows five videos, and another page that tells about the Island of Rhodes. I'm either lost, confused, or both.

Slayer X Apr 13, 2007 09:42 PM

The HD Code requires a code to access. after entering the main page with the videos hit proceed. Then there is a page with the history of Rhodes. This is actually the first puzzle.

Answer to puzzle can be found here: http://www.gametrailers.com/viewnews.php?id=4416

This is where you find out about the HD mode. After that is the picture puzzle which leads to the new counter.

Also GT has a comparison video for the SD and HD versions of GoW2

Oh awesome. How in the hell did anybody figure this stuff out. That's pretty clever. I hope to god that the countdown is for a PS3 God of War III. A PSP game would be cool and all, but I just have a craving for some next gen hack-n-slash.

Ramenbetsu Apr 15, 2007 02:04 AM

Finished the game recently. Awesome experience, enjoyed more than the 1st to be honest.

KCJ506 Sep 11, 2007 11:07 PM

Sorry to bump this up, but I'm now playing this game and I'm having a big problem. I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else?

I beat Theseus and got the Horse Keepers' key and tried using to on the emblem, but whenever I use it nothing happens! I can't even move Kratos around anymore. The only thing it'll let me do is pause.
