Well I would get in once confirmation is made, although I wish I could take the screenshots directly from the games that I have (is there a way?), without resorting to my blurry digital camera. Looking forward to see what kinds of obscure games people can come up with.

Just let the man post what game he wants. Everyone should use common sense when posting, the idea is to have a little challenge, not make it impossible to guess/recognize. If you think enough people should be able to recognize the title in question, post away. Only way to find out.
Making a "only outside jap releases only" rule is silly, since it's limiting and won't remove the impossible to guess obscure titles anyway. Plus then I wouldn't be able to post Earth Defence Force 2. |

I think it has too many polygons to be a PSX game so it's either JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Gold Whirlwind or JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood for PS2. I guess I'll just give a stab and guess the latest game then - Phantom Blood.

Elixir's got it again. Arx Fatalis it is. Though I didn't expect it to be so much of a stumper, as the game isn't even remotely obscure. I would have hinted that the game was a spiritual successor to Ultima Underworld, and that would have surely given it away.

Qwarky is correct, Heart of the Alien. After posting it I realized it wasn't even released outside of the US. In the US the first game was called "Out of This World" instead of Another World as well.

Out of all the screengrabs in this thread the Spear of Destiny one is the only one I have recognized. As Chaotic suggests, more familiar games would make it more interesting for everyone who isn't the same 3 people.

While I agree people shouldn't go out of their way to post the most obscure games, to be perfectly honest, if you don't recognise a game like Akuji, Liquid Kids or Shadow of Memories, I feel that says more about your very limited knowledge of games than anything wrong on the poster's part. Posting Mario 64 and Final Fantasy 7 samples does not make things interesting, then it's simply a race on who refreshes and types fastest.
A good sample can be from an obscure game, so long as it includes details that people can investigate in order to track down the correct answer. I admit Stealth Force was a very bad choice on my part since it's so indistinguishable. That said, I think lix is trying too hard to stump people here >:E |

As for the whole mainstream thing, I meant just mixing it up a little bit. Not every screen has to be an obscure and rare game. Just post some games so it's friendly for all users to join in. It might kill some of you that some games are ridiculously easy, but we're not all as hardcore as you three. We don't need to start another thread for just the mainstream games alone.
Either way, you can post like 3 obscure games and then 1 mainstream or something. Just mix it up a little bit. Either way, people have different definitions of mainstream, so the mainstream thread might not even help at all. |

It does bare a similarity to those games, but it was released a bit after them (I think I remember seeing that Namco shooter you're thinking of though, it was in the arcades in the early 90s, right?). Well it was a console game, which should narrow it down a little since there weren't many consoles that would have graphics like that. It was one of the first space shooters that allowed you to destroy individual sections of capital ships, and had an interesting 2-player mode where one player drives the ship while the other player aims and shoots the gun. It was also extremely short.

A winner is you. Also known as Stellar Assault in Europe (yes, wonderfully original names they had there). The system is what made the game obscure more than anything else, it was one of the few good 32X games and for some reason it never got a sequel on the Saturn.

Hmm, I'm pretty certain it's from a cutscene, and it looks familiar, but I just can't recall what from. The lasers look straight out of Xenosaga (probably the third one), but I thought all the cutscenes in those games were fullscreen instead of letterboxed, so that doesn't seem likely. It also looks similar to Zone of the Enders 2, but I can't remember at what point that would've been in the game. I guess for now my vote goes for ZoE2.

I think someone made a clone/port of some kind with Turbo Sliders, but the netplay it was said to offer required you to shut down firewalls, so it was mostly good for LAN parties. I'd never heard of Triumph, but I decided to look it up in case of regional names and so forth, and it seems that it was an NES game that was never released. (It should be pretty clear that the screenshot is NOT from the NES.)
However, while searching, I found German box art detail (presumably never actually printed) here, and I recognize all those characters from in-game. You are correct, it is indeed Carnage Heart. One of the most interesting and unique games I've played, and yes the PSP game has a pretty different interface. Hope it gets a domestic release.

I was meaning to reveal this game today. It's called Wolfsbane; a point & click adventure about a merchant that gets bitten by a werewolf, and has to find a cure before the next full moon. Otherwise, he turns into one himself and it's GAME OVER. (Do I get the point? =p)

I don't know the exact game, but it sort of looks like one of the games in Microsoft's Puzzle Collection, Lineup, where you have to form a line between the borders using Tetris-like blocks.
