Annoying Trends

Perhaps its just the cynic in me, but I see alot of trends popping up that have me saying "What the FUCK are these people thinking?" I just don't understand what is so appealing about what's currently popular.

One example being: Uggs. 'Fashionable' boots for women. It even says in the description of them that they're called 'Uggs' because they're UGLY! Why are so many women going around wearing them?! If I wanted to wear boots, I'd break out the Timberland's, not these furry things with heels! And then when I ask a girl 'why', she says "Because they keep my feet warm." Well, thats a great reason, but I think the fact that you're wearing a mini-skirt with them kinda kills it.

So tell me. Are there (or have there been) any trends that just get you going? Halo-addicts? MySpace-whores? What trends do you see people mindlessly following while you stand there thinking 'why'?

Wall Feces Jan 11, 2007 12:38 AM

I'd say Halo-addicts, since anybody who has played an FPS game before the year 2002 knows that there are many better games out there than that painfully mediocre pile.

The worst fashion trend I can think of is definitely the popped collar. it's stupid, doesn't look good or cool, and is just plain retarded 100%. It's like a half-assed turtleneck. By the way, turtlenecks also suck.

Another bad fashion trend is "destroyed" jeans. You know, the jeans that are pre-ripped and that you pay MORE to buy. What a dumb idea that so many idiots bought into.

Arkhangelsk Jan 11, 2007 12:38 AM

Crocs are 50x worse than Uggs, in my opinion. They don't even look like real shoes...more like the plastic shoes packaged with Hong Kong knock-off Barbie dolls. I would say WoW is the most annoying thing to ever exist.

Rydia Jan 11, 2007 12:46 AM

I've seen lots of girls wearing the Uggs with mini-skirts. Although obviously for fashion, I couldn't imagine how they were able to walk around with that outfit during winter.

Another one is the tall t-shirt trend for some high school boys I remember seeing one day on campus. It was during the week when high schools were touring my college campus, but I remember seeing the boys right away because it seemed like they were wearing long dresses from a distance.

Trends like this are nice for people like me, as I'm fairly tall but have short legs for my height. I can never find shirts in tall sizes.

I guess I should clarify that the shirts I meant were the ones that reached well below the knees and fell just above the ankles.

Wow, I've seen guys in long shirts before, but never THAT long. Geez!

Gechmir Jan 11, 2007 01:17 AM

There's a picture hovering around here that has a black fellow wearing a shirt down to his shins or ankles. I'm amazed you haven't seen it ='D

Maybe I'm the only dude in the world, but I don't see the point of text messaging. If you wanna tell someone something, call them. If it's too short and pointless, AIM them or something. Everyone does it these days.

But maybe I'm just the only dude in the world that doesn't check his phone every five seconds.

Vemp Jan 11, 2007 02:11 AM

Wearing belts outside their shirt. I find that absurd.

Oh, did I tell about a girl I saw wearing fur boots? And that I live in a tropical climate? Now tell me if that's not stupid.

Spike Jan 11, 2007 02:28 AM

I find it absolutely hilarious when guys are walking around with them trying to be "hard."

munchkin13 Jan 11, 2007 07:35 AM

Trends that annoy me.
Girls walking around with their thongs above their jeans! Why lord why?! buy a belt!
People who try to act hard.
People who leave tags on baseball caps! For the love of god I wanna pull them off so much!
ooo and those lads who have to wear bright white trainers! they can't have a speck of muck on them at all or they throw a hissy fit.

Alice Jan 11, 2007 10:07 AM

I hate skunk hair. You know what I'm talking about. It's the hair that is black underneath and bleached almost white on top. Oh, and I detest a lot of styling product. It makes people's hair look really greasy and dirty, and what happens if someone tries to touch it or - God forbid - run their hands through it? I can only imagine how much that would hurt. Not to mention the fact that they'd probably end up with that junk all over their hands.

EDIT: Here's a picture of skunk hair that I found. This one's actually not too bad (although I still hate it). It looks a lot uglier when it's on someone with short hair.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b4.../skunkhair.jpg

Drex Jan 11, 2007 10:32 AM

All of the above, yeah. Although I've heard some people pop their collars to make themselves look taller and sometimes thinner, as it covers the neck but in such a way as not to accentuate size. Still, popping the collar looks idiotic and you'll never catch me doing it.

It's mostly the fashion trends that make no sense that really bug me, like the aforementioned fur boots in tropical climate, or (multiple) belts above the shirt. I mean...why?

Also, the ever-popular tie. Not much of a trend, since it's so well established, but why tie a piece of super expensive fabric around your throat? Let's be honest, here. So what if it covers up the buttons on your shirt. It's a piece of fabric that you paid $70 for, and it looks like a piece of someone's kilt.

The time when ties suck the most is when girls are trying to pull the Avril Lavigne and putting one one over a white tank top. STUPID.

As a man, I never understood why ties were a fashion device... They really make no sense to me.

Drex Jan 11, 2007 11:07 AM

Yeah...if they began as a bib, why the heck are they made out of silk now? If they're meant to cover the buttons on the shirt, why do they have to be $40 a pop?

And if they're meant to cover buttons, why in heaven's name do girls put them over shirts without buttons?

These are the questions that beg answers.

Des Jan 11, 2007 11:35 AM

wannabees

The white guys who try to act black. I've met these too many times and each time i want to rip out their throat. Not only are they pathetic at immitating "gangsta" as they call it but they are usually some of the weakest, most pathetic people around. The only reason they are even allowed to do this is that nobody has any respect for them and doesn't even see them worth the time. They do this because they are weak and pathetic and want to be associated with someone better at life than them.

The ones I really hate though are the wannabee goths. Dress in black and face paint going around saying "my life suck". Yeah, That great, life sucks for 95% of the world, your nothing special. I've know some real goths and if these people knew half the things real goths do they would run away screaming. They are usually rich kids too. Only way they can afford all these "goth" accessories. It's just them trying to get something out of their parets by acting "wierd". Hell according to an interenet survey i'm goth but guess what, I walk around in blue jeans and a t-shirt. I don't even consider myself goth so i know these "depressed" brats aren't either.

What the fuck. I suddenly imagined this with...

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y29...58DVC00298.jpg

...and got a good laugh out of it. I definitely dislike Uggs, belts over shirts, myspace cameras stuck at every angle other than normal with black+white/greyscale only. The massive, face eating shades deal is another one.

Ties started out as...bibs?

I can't even think of the name now, but those diamond shaped blankets with a hole for the head that it seems every woman on earth suddenly started wearing over night. They look terribly common. And just a piece of advice to women who wear them: You look like a dork. Take that shit off. Please.

Alice Jan 11, 2007 01:04 PM

Bandannas?

Jochie Jan 11, 2007 01:16 PM

I've noticed almost ALL kids have tiny backpacks with some sort of cartoon or movie character on them. This includes kids who look like they're in high school, and it's weird because they ALL have them.

I also think the hoodies with eye-murdering prints all over them are weird.

The baseball cap worn tilted to one side has confused me for years now.

Ponchos ^^
Which are supposed to be waterproof, but instead they have them all knitted. I'd like to see what would happen if I chucked a bucket of water over one of those.

My town is FILLED with those. I can't go to the mall without being disgusted with them. I just want to grab one of them by the shoulders and shake them a few times, saying "You think your life SUCKS?! You're in HIGH SCHOOL! What do you have to worry about?! Three-Page papers and ZITS?! Dress in real clothes, then come to me complaining when you have to deal with COLLEGE!!!"

Alice Jan 11, 2007 01:44 PM

Oh, you're talking about shawls.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b4...land/shawl.jpg

Yes, those do look rather like peasant garb, but they're nice when they're worn for their intended purpose (cool, not cold days...just enough to warm your shoulders and arms) and not as a fashion accessory.

JackyBoy Jan 11, 2007 02:01 PM

Ah thank you. Yes, that's what I was referring to. Oddly that one in the picture doesn't look too bad either. The ones I typically see are about 3 times the size. The girl wearing it usually looks like they're being swallowed up like Spawn with his massive cape. Sometimes they have frilly material around the edge too which increases the eye sore-ness.

franposis Jan 11, 2007 02:06 PM

-shakes head- it's not shawls you're thinking of. It's ponchos!

deadsky Jan 11, 2007 02:10 PM

poncho's are odd things...a cross bettween a binbag and a cape 0.o

deadsky Jan 11, 2007 02:13 PM

I'm aware of that :P but I've only ever come across them at amusement parks and those are overpriced binbags

deadsky Jan 11, 2007 02:19 PM

Destroyed/Very Worn looking clothing - I seriously seen a pair of jeans that had a label that stated along the lines of "This style is dyed with a special ink to give it a worn look" like honestly, when I buy things new, I like them looking like NEW please -__-"

Purposely poor constructed clothes - meaning t-shirts, skirts, and probebly pants (although I havn't ran into them yet) that anr't serged and just look like it's some kinda cut and paste job. This also includes clothing that has threads purposely dangling from the bottom of the skirts and tshirt sleves that look like they're fraying BUT! supposetly it's ment to be that way... when it's new (w00h...)

Ponchos and shrawls arn't probebly so great as far as "fashion sense" goes these days - although I have them they're knit in wool mix material and they beat my blanket any day cuz I just fall and trip on those due to it's length (and plus, if ya gotta go somewhere out of your snuggly chair you're not brining this huge massive blanket around you and you look like a saussage wiggling your way towards somewhere ... unless you drag it of course :p)

Drex Jan 11, 2007 02:41 PM

Hah, came across another one walking to class this morning: guys who walk around in the cold wearing a scarf, big ski gloves, and a t-shirt. ...what?!

Ugh I know what you mean, it's nearly impossible to find jeans without stupid rips or "stretch marks". I tjhink Levi's are one of the few brands that still have plain jeans anymore and they cost a pretty penny.

Agreed. I don't like it either, and I don't wanna pay for a "text messaging plan"; and at 10 cents a message, it's really cheaper (and easier) to just call me and leave a message or IM. Ten cents isn't much, but when you look back at, say, the ten messages you received last month, it's like "Damn, I paid a dollar for those?" For an occasional greeting, it's okay, but I don't like the regular use of it. Since I pay the cell phone bill in my house, I got annoyed by my brother last month because he received some 300+ text messages from one of his friends... all the same message too. =/

In light of 24 premiering, the only situation I can think of where text messaging might be useful is if you're a hostage, but have access to a phone in your pocket. Now that would be some elite skills there to navigate the menu and type your message and all (I think there was a similar scene in The Departed); then again you could just dial 911 and leave it off-hook. But then there could be a PHOENIX SHIELD of some sort and all your signals are fucked anyway. =p

Levis are decently priced. Around 30 bucks and even cheaper if there are sales going on. I've seen pants that are 'used' for more than 80 bucks.
I hate that used, worn look as well.

I also hate it when people wear a blazer over jeans. That just looks fucking tacky. And then they wear a button up shirt with a tie, yet the top button isn't buttoned and the tie is hanging lose. Either wear it right or not at all.

And hey, if ponchos are good enough for Clint Eastwood, then they're good enough for me.

http://www.facade.com/celebrity/phot...t_Eastwood.jpg

deadsky Jan 11, 2007 06:04 PM

In England Levis go for about 40-50 pounds that's about 80-100 dollars.
They might be dahm good jeans, but it's not affordable when your a student.

I know someone who spent 200 pounds on ripped jeans...some people are wierd
:eye:

Bolide Jan 11, 2007 06:10 PM

I'm wondering which is better for trend spotting: a college campus or a high school campus. I seem to recall pointless trends in high school, but since coming to college back in 2003, some of the most tacky/pointless trends have been personally spotted here.

I agree that most of the mentioned trends so far are in fact pretty ridiculous. The only one I can think of that's not already mentioned would be those cheer skirts that went around for a little while. Basically it's a cheer leader skirt, but not "labeled" as such. In other words, one of these would be mixed with a regular top. Sometimes these would be accompanied by the Uggs. *sigh*

deadsky Jan 11, 2007 06:18 PM

I think the wierdest trend I've seen since i started uni was the whole inside-out-hood on coats.....seriously....why? Sometimes i can understand
why people want to look daft but this just doesn't make any sense :twitch:

Von Jan 11, 2007 06:30 PM

Besides clothing knock-offs, the trend that most irritates me is the hate. There is an overwhelming aura of negativity around school and the internet now, and I think it is just because people view hate as something in vogue. If you can find something to hate in common, you can hate together!

What happened to plain old 'interests'?

Then go to Mexico. You can buy 10 for what you'd pay for one here in the States. And I'm still a little hazy as to what a "binbag" is.

Also, FUCK shawls. It's all about zarapes.

Back on topic: I really am starting to hate overly white teeth, large hoop earrings, and other appearance modifications that make you unable to decide if the girl is a 15-year-old trying to look like a 30-year-old desperate housewife, or the other way around.

franposis Jan 11, 2007 07:23 PM

haha I can't say I've seen a desperate housewife trend where I am... Although I don't get out much so I may've missed it :D

I think now would be a good time to remind people (I'm looking at you, ladies) to take a refresher course in The Guide to Avoiding GFF Stalkers.

Also, stop derailing topics, you cockmonglers.

Temari Jan 11, 2007 08:00 PM

Lol, I get the creepy guys in real life, not worried about those online nearly as much.

Anyways, I thought of another one while walking in the mall today... Girl's pants with words on the ass. Especially on younger girls. Excuse me, you are 8 years old, why do you have the word 'sexy' printed on your butt? I don't understand the need to have words on your ass. That could just be me though. :erm:

Anyway back on topic

I've seen allot of people suddenly wearing suspenders....and belts......i thought you where ment to wear one or the other seems a bit pointless to wear both

deadsky Jan 11, 2007 08:22 PM

No matter what you tell some people they believe that this is going to justify they're existence and they should just understand that attention from these creeps is not the way to go.

.....so suspenders and belts?

Temari Jan 11, 2007 08:23 PM

Lol. I'm not 'proud of it' Devo, just saying that why would I worry about the creepies online when I have enough bothering me in real life. But I do agree with you, girls begging for attention in any manner are kinda annoying. Which goes back to the girls with pouty MySpace pictures, lol!

I have to laugh at that. back when I was still in high school there was this group of Emo kids, and everyone though they were girls. it's ridicules that people can do that to themselves. I've seen some pretty messed up fashions and what not. I forgot who said it but crooked hats. when I see kids like that I want to just walk up to them straighten it and tell them to do something with their lives.

I hate the tattoo on the lower back by women.... I don't find it very attractive at all, especially when they start wearing low cut jeans just to show the tattoo off more. If you read the post I had in the thread "Show me your tats", then you know I don't really like tattooes in the first place....

I've heard it called the "do me" tattoo. Very fitting, I'd say.

Well, it sure in hell doesn't want me to "do her"......

I prefer to call it the tramp stamp. It's usually a tribal design that means nothing. I'm sure 25 years from now that tattoo will look REAL cool.

Drex Jan 12, 2007 01:44 PM

When it's migrated halfway down her butt? Yeah.

deadsky Jan 12, 2007 02:06 PM

Personally I love tattoo's in any shape or form, but I do understand what you mean about tribal tats. It's usually the kind of people who walk into a tattoo shop and point at the wall flash and say "I want that one".
Tattoo's should have meaning behind them, well that's how I see it :)

PS:lower back tattoo's can be awesome, you shouln't just umbrella them all because of lame tribals

Tattoos, to me, are ridiculous... nobody could possibly know for sure that they're going to want (whatever image they stick on their body) on them for the rest of their life.... even if it has a lot of meaning. So I'll have to add tattoos to my list of trends that annoy me. Those and nose piercings, belly button piercings (SOME of those look kind of good, but that's rare) eyebrow piercings... basically any piercings anywhere except the ears. And gauged ears, good grief.

I have, however, considered getting a tattoo, or rather one of those tattoos that last for like two weeks (or is it two months?) ... I forget what they're called, I just call 'em temporary permanent tattoos, since I like oxymorons. If I was to do that, I'd consider putting the words "Veritas" and "Aequitas" on my hands, a la Boondock Saints.

Oh, a Henna tattoo! I don't know, they come out in such a weird color that I wouldnt be too big of a fan of them.

I came up with another one (I'm just full of hate for these trends, oh joy!)! Wicca as a trend. So many high schoolers go through this phase of 'omg, wicca is so cool, I'm gonna worship other gods and do magic and cast curses on people! It'll be like CHARMED! And I need to wear pentacles everywhere to PROVE to everyone that I'm a Wiccan Witch!'

The pagan in me shudders. Why must they do that? ;_;

franposis Jan 12, 2007 03:13 PM

The tattoos that really annoy me are the star ones everyone seems to be getting at the moment, because everyone who has them thinks they're so incredibly unique, even though as they say it three people with identical tattoos are walking past... Or when people have a random assortment of crap dotted down their arms with no order to it at all.

I think some tattoos can be incredible works of art ^_^

Ugh. Agreed. Although I'm an atheist, so I don't feel quite so personally about it, I still find it ridiculous. The worst part is when they expect love spells and revenge spells to work.

Which kind of reminds me of the stupidity of (although it's not really a 'trend' as such) chain bulletins on MySpace. OMFG REPOST THIS WITHIN 99 SECONDS OR YOUR TRUE LOVE WILL DIE!!!111!!ONE

Ugg boots ~ horrible looking things. What woman in her right mind would want to wear these, it's not like they go with anything either.

Trousers tucked into socks ~ This is stupid, when I see someone with their pants tucked into their socks I have to restrain myself from pointing and laughing at them, they just look so bloody stupid.

Ripped clothing ~ why? what is the point of buying clothing if it is ripped? I just don't see any point in this really. Looks pretty ugly as well.

That's not quite as bad as the increasing number of times I'm seeing guys with their t-shirts tucked into their boxers...

krn_schaefer Jan 12, 2007 10:44 PM

ahh i would def have to say leggings are thee absolute WORST trend ever. they most definetely should've stayed in the 80's lol.

I really hate seeing the Bathing Ape clothing on anyone. You can google the image since I can't post it, but I just think they look hideous, and we're expected to spend around $200 for a fucking hoodie.

The most ridiculous part of Bathing Ape clothing is that it's been counterfeited so much and has yet to have received a price drop. Imagine your child coming to you asking for a new $200 sweater and $80 shirt from Bathing Ape and not knowing that it's just a counterfeit.

I've never really been that bothered about name brand clothing, most of the stuff i own is from Primark or H&M. Well except the band t-shirts :)

I hate that emo wear (is that what it is?) where a bunch of guys wear tight pants with the same black hair.

I also hate those roller shoes that kids wear. Every time I see a kid running by, only to slide across the mall in those shoes, I just wanna punch the kid.

Yeah, the trousers in socks is annoying too or the pants that people wear down to their legs. How the hell do you run? It looks like it's shit-filled.

Maybe they are shit-filled since they can't run to the loo?

Speaking of body-mods

I hate it when cars put the wrong logos on their car to make other people think that they are faster than they really are. Like putting a GT logo on a not GT mustang. That and ricers like you have all this money to blow on a body kit, carbon fiber hood, big fat exhaust, spoiler, a paint job, underglow, MOMO rims, and a CAI; but none to upgrade the engine (CAI doesn't count!). It's like... uh..... wats the point?

i really don't mind the KIDS in roller shoes; i mean ya it can get kinda annoying trying to get around them and stuff but their just kids. I REALLY hate it when like high schoolers wear those thinking it's cool and we're like uh...... sit down faggot.

strike911 Jan 17, 2007 03:14 PM

I don't really get the emo guys that wear women's jeans... I just don't get it, and, I mean, I guess if that's what they wanna do then their going to do it, but I just ... uggghhh.... IT'S WOMEN'S PANTS!!! *FALLS OVer*
