2pt: 8 Perfect Selection Twinbee - FANTASTIC POWERS (8)
Besides the 128kbps quality which I never like, this song is just as addicting as Phantasy Star. I'm surprised by a few of the choices in this week's SOTW. The song isn't repetitive, and instruments continue to stay like something I want to listen to over again. 2pt: Lethal Enforcers (Sega CD Red Book Audio) - Shoot into the Street (8) This song is somewhat interesting in my opinion. Although the beginning sounds like it might be a repetitive song, it doesn't completely end up the way. The different combinations of instruments do enough work to make this song justice... Ok, never mind... I change my mind. This song is repetitive... but still realllly good. 2pt: PHANTASY STAR COLLECTION Sound Collection I - DUNGEON MEDLEY (8) Hmm, I missed this track the last time I went through Phantasy Star Collection. The beginning is really addicting, and the middle does something exactly where I want it. This seems like a mix of one of the old castlevania themes, in a more original Phantasy Star style. I especially like the introduction of the electric guitar at 1:55, which serves as a perfect moment for it. All of the themes in the melody are equally addicting, and this is a clear winner for me. Gain Ground (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - Origin ~Awakening~ (Heroes' Theme) [BGM1] (6.5) This song is a bit more memorable compared to a few of the other tracks in this pool right now. And it's a lot saying that I'm a person who usually doesn't prefer chiptune melodies SILENT SCOPE TRILOGY Original Soundtrack - SUPREME (6) I kind of forgot this song while I was listening to it... the beginning doesn't really sound that memorable while I'm working on homework. The jazz in the middle is done decently, but it just isn't my type of music, personally. I'm sure other jazz fans will end up voting for this song, though. Phantom Kingdom Arrange Album - JOKER (6) Pretty decent jazz at the beginning, albeit not the best that I've ever heard. The best part that makes the song somewhat more interesting starts at around 2:35, and if the song continued from there, I would have given higher marks. The voice in the middle isn't just me. The Best of LucasArts Original Soundtracks - Underwater Lagoon (6) The song is decent, but not particularly memorable, compared to a few of the others in this list. I notice a trend of jazz themes this week =) Space Station: Silicon Valley (Game Rip) - Ice 'n' Easy Does It (5.5) I kind of think that the short phrases that contribute to this song don't really make the theme memorable. The song almost seems like it's trying to be one of those really annoying themes that get stuck in your head, but it really only ends up annoying me a tad bit. |
I'm not in a place where I can vote right now (no speakers) but I will make a nomination, to make sure this thread stays at the top of the forum.
Name: Intro Theme Album: Ragnarok Online 2 (game rip) Artist: Yoko Kanno Track #: 1 Disc #: 1 Catalog #: n/a Year: 2006 I've already uploaded the tune, fully tagged, to the SoTW server. |
Isn't that a bit too recent? ;)... just kidding. I really don't care.
But why not a few of the other themes like Koukai FO or Yoru Vln? |

3 pt: Lethal Enforcers (Sega CD Red Book Audio) - Shoot into the Street
Although the track seems to loop way too much, the instrumentation is awesome as well as the tune its self. Very catchy and upbeat. Kenichiro Fukui does it again! 2 pt: Perfect Selection Twinbee - FANTASTIC POWERS Nice one! I had never listened to any Twinbee before, but this one sure interested me. Nice arrangement and the tune is great. The one thing I didn't like was the guitar solo in the middle, but it was still a great track. 1 pt: Gain Ground (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - Origin ~Awakening~ (Heroes' Theme) [BGM1] Chiptunes always catch my attention. Pretty good piece though a little dull at parts. Still catchy tough. A little more variety to the composition would have helped. Honorable mention: PHANTASY STAR COLLECTION Sound Collection I - DUNGEON MEDLEY This one brought back a lot of memories. The arrangement was okay, but I didn't like how the tunes were out of order (Boss, Cave, Tower when it should have been Cave, Tower, Boss). Still pretty good, but not better than the above. Others The rest either sounded too generic or annoying. The only exception was SILENT SCOPE TRILOGY Original Soundtrack - SUPREME, which started to catch my attention in the beginning (as if it were building up to something nice), but the jazz was disappointing. |

Er... just posting to say that I hope that you maintain this thread for one week more, as the Chiptune Contest also takes some time.

What does everyone say about extending voting for a week because of the BCC? |
Quote:
|
Yeah, we might as well, since only a couple have had time to listen and vote.
|
Quote:
Given the BCC, an extension here is fair. |
Good idea on the extension, but I'm throwing my vote out there now anyway.
Excellent, excellent week. (3 points) - Silent Scope (1 point) - Phantasy Star Dungeon Melody (1 point) - Fantastic Powers (1 point) - Shoot Into The Street |
2 points - Gain Ground (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - Origin ~Awakening~ (Heroes' Theme) [BGM1]
2 points - Phantom Kingdom Arrange Album - JOKER 2 points - Space Station: Silicon Valley (Game Rip) - Ice 'n' Easy Does It |
My first listen through of this week is very positive. Also, the song progression flows quite well using the alphabetical arrangement (i.e. how it always plays for me by default). I'll try to get around to voting tomorrow or Sunday, but since you guys are extending the votes, I'll probably hold off longer.
|
Thought I better vote first given my tight schedule next week. Very good week and I almost feel guilty not giving the other tracks points. The Phantasy Star track sounds awfully familiar, however. :P
(2 points) SILENT SCOPE TRILOGY Original Soundtrack - SUPREME (2 points) Phantasy Star Sound Collection Volume I - Dungeon Medley (1 point) Gain Ground (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - Origin ~Awakening~ (Heroes' Theme) [BGM1] (1 point) Phantom Kingdom Arrange Album - JOKER |
Okay, I got some very quick internet access tonight. I listened to the tracks a few hours ago. No comments this week, just points. This, however, was a really good week. Tough competition here.
3 Points: Perfect Selection Twinbee - FANTASTIC POWERS 1 Point: Phantom Kingdom Arrange Album - JOKER 1 Point: Lethal Enforcers (Sega CD Red Book Audio) - Shoot into the Street 1 Point: PHANTASY STAR COLLECTION Sound Collection I - DUNGEON MEDLEY |
My nomination better be next week...arg.
Silicon Valley: It's a bit happy and fun but fails to really do anything. I remember this game too...it had a good sense of humor and it was kind of weird. Much like this song. Lethal Enforcers: Kind of a mix of Mario Kart and Nightwish, which is blowing my mind at this very moment. Very nice, and it's a good pick. Silent Scope: A nice background song that has some good listening merits. It might get a point or two from me if there isn't anything better. Gain Ground: Castlevania kind of song, which doesn't rub me the right way. A sign that some oldies just can't kick around good melodies any more. Phantasy Star: Many kudos to the person who nominated this one; it's so good it might even meet my morning playlist. The mix of instruments remind me a bit of my Starcraft nominee, but with a little more umph. Perfect Slection Twinbee: A bit too generic and happy for my taste. besides, the rest of the music quality this week makes this out of its league. Phantom Kingdom: On a worse week this would have been a high scorer. It's a nice, ethereal track that has nice jazz roots, without being too blatant. Lucasarts: It's not the most interesting track, but what is there is very nice and smooth. It's just not engaging, though it's perfect for a Lucasarts game. 3 points: Phantasy Star Collections 2 Points: Lethal Enforcers 1 Point: Silent Scope |
Space Station: Silicon Valley (Game Rip) - Ice 'n' Easy Does It Very laid-back, jazzy instrumental. Sort of modern-day lounge music, if you will. A bit on the atmospheric/ambient side, though, without any really exceptional parts to make up for it.
Lethal Enforcers (Sega CD Red Book Audio) - Shoot into the Street I'm not crazy about the guitar backing, but I love the synth melody here, and the overall effect is quite nice, though the track is a tad long. SILENT SCOPE TRILOGY Original Soundtrack - SUPREME Wasn't this the game where you recovered health by using your sniper rifle to spy on pretty girls? It's got the poper elements for a police-style action track--racing pianos, "tick-tock" percussion, a touch of electronics--but is missing a real melody or personality. Potential's there, but it's not realized. Gain Ground (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - Origin ~Awakening~ (Heroes' Theme) [BGM1] *cough*bestchiptunecontest*cough* Excuse me. This track struck me as very flat, though I'm not sure why. The melody is nothing to write home about, and the rhythmic parts are actually a distraction, since they're so much louder than everything else. PHANTASY STAR COLLECTION Sound Collection I - DUNGEON MEDLEY Looks like somebody's determined to place with a Phantasy Star track :) The trouble with this and indeed all medley tracks is that, by their very nature, they tend to be all over the map. Such is the case here. I'm also not too happy with the prog-rock route the arrangers took, which I don't think suits the source material. I much prefer the arrangements made for the PS2 port of the original game. Perfect Selection Twinbee - FANTASTIC POWERS Quite a lot like Lethal Enforcers, with the same strengths and weaknesses for me, though I like the synth melody slightly better. Very good. Phantom Kingdom Arrange Album - JOKER I'm not fond of the Nippon Ichi music I've heard through SoTW and the BSC, largely because it tends to be poorly synthed and hyper-generic. A lounge arrangement accentuates these flaws; I was thoroughly bored by the time the track ended. The Best of LucasArts Original Soundtracks - Underwater Lagoon I think this song is from Escape from Monkey Island; correct me if I'm wrong. I dream of the day when LucasArts games will get some respect on the board, and while this may not be the best song to do that, it's still pretty dang good. This is how to do something loungey and not have it put people to sleep. Whew. What a slog. Three brackets' worth of voting and SoTW. I think I'm burnt our for the next few days. The Point Spread Shoot into the Street, Wounding Innocent Bystanders - 2 pts. FANTASTIC POWERS - 2 pts. Underwater Lagoon - 2 pts. |
3 points - Lethal Enforcers
1 point - Lucasarts 1 point - Phantom Kingdom 1 point - Space Station: Silicon Valley Edit: Got listening again, and some of the songs have grown on me. |

|
Glad that extended deadline is being put to good use by so many people.
|
Yeah, the votes are just pouring in. Do the powers-that-be think we should maybe close things if this torrent of voters continues?
|
At this point, we might as well leave it open until Sunday. 'tis not too far away. :\
besides, I haven't voted yet and intend to |
Ok, ok, let's vote :psyduck: :
2 points ~ Lethal Enforcers (Sega CD Red Book Audio) - Shoot into the Street 1 point ~ Gain Ground (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - Origin ~Awakening~ (Heroes' Theme) [BGM1] 2 points ~ Perfect Selection Twinbee - FANTASTIC POWERS 1 point ~ Phantom Kingdom Arrange Album - JOKER This week featured 3 Konami tracks, so the quality was ensured before starting. Nice week, and sorry for the needing of the delay, but the obscure material at BCC and the exams have kept me occupied. |
One question: Why do I appear as Eclipse on the Nomination Queue?
|
Because I can't read. :(
|
Oh alright. Thanks for changing that. :)
|
What a week of win.
Gain Ground (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - Origin ~Awakening~ (Heroes' Theme) [BGM1] Yeah, lol BBC. It's a good track with much diversity in both atmosphere and melody. I think I can't expect more from a chiptune, except maybe that it's not terribly mega catchy, but these tracks are rare and appear only randomly and by luck. Lethal Enforcers (Sega CD Red Book Audio) - Shoot into the Street Fantastic track, this will get the gold medal from me. It's catchy and badass-provocative. I don't really mind the repetitiveness here and I am glad these kind of tracks exist so that I can claim that repetitiveness is not a point in music. Perfect Selection Twinbee - FANTASTIC POWERS Another super track. Practically everything is win about this track, the rhythm, the melody and the feel. Oh wait, Twinbee does ring a bell in my mind. I think I've played the game, which is why the music felt a bit familiar. PHANTASY STAR COLLECTION Sound Collection I - DUNGEON MEDLEY Although being titled a medley it flows very well. It's got diversity and some really good melodies. I am actually not too familiar with Phantasy Star Online music, except for the Original Soundtrack, so I didn't recognize any themes. It's the third track in a row that features some elec guitar. Phantom Kingdom Arrange Album - JOKER An ok track, it's not bad as with all the jazzy music, but when it's slow like this it can get a bit boring, though I don't think about that way for every slow track. And vocals in the end were totally random. SILENT SCOPE TRILOGY Original Soundtrack - SUPREME This track rocks. It needs a bit to develop, but I even thought the beginning was quite good. The very good piano work meant that the track never boring, but what also caught my attention was the background. In the midst of this jumpy piano music was some sort of layered music, that signifies uneasiness and danger. Quite an interesting blend therefore. Space Station: Silicon Valley (Game Rip) - Ice 'n' Easy Does It This little sugar track was very elegant and graceful. It feels a bit ordinary compared to the longer tracks this week but it's another very good track. The Best of LucasArts Original Soundtracks - Underwater Lagoon No, this track doesn't cut it this week. It has slighty jazzy tendencies + classical influences, but I didn't get much out of it. Roman Point Spread: (lol, what's with capitals in titles this week) III Points - Lethal Enforcers (Sega CD Red Book Audio) - Shoot into the Street I Point - Perfect Selection Twinbee - FANTASTIC POWERS I Point - SILENT SCOPE TRILOGY Original Soundtrack - SUPREME I Point - Space Station: Silicon Valley (Game Rip) - Ice 'n' Easy Does It |

I suspect you may be associating this arrangement with something else because I'd be rather surprised if you remembered the original chiptune without specifically seeking it out. (Thanks for the point, though!) |

Now a PSO medley would be awesome... |
Time for my votes!
2 points: Lethal Enforcers (Sega CD Red Book Audio) - Shoot into the Street I woke up some morning ago, and the first thing that popped into my head was this. So, it must be real good! 2 points: Perfect Selection Twinbee - FANTASTIC POWERS Awesome arrangement! And I should say that I am familiar with this tune from the game. It's the one that plays after you grab one of those bell power-ups. 1 point: PHANTASY STAR COLLECTION Sound Collection I - DUNGEON MEDLEY Great medley for the first PS game's dungeons. I've heard it a few years back, so it lost some of its appeal. But Medusa^∞! 1 point: The Best of LucasArts Original Soundtracks - Underwater Lagoon Love most of Michael Land's Monkey Island compositions and caribbean style. Loved the sax here. The rest of the tracks were quite good. I liked JOKER and SUPREME in particular, and I'm sorry they had to miss out. Another top-notch week, or two. |
This is one of the best weeks we've had. Nice selection of rockin' and chippin' mixed in with some laid back jazzin'. I feel bad for not giving any of these tracks points so I'll have to go with the famed six hit combo:
1 point each to: Origin Dungeon Medley Shoot Into The street Supreme Fantastic Powers Underwater Lagoon Also, I swear I've heard an arrangement of the Gain Ground track before. Can anyone identify it? |
Quote:
|
Ah yes, it was the SEGAAGES version I had previously heard and it was a nice rockin' S.S.H. style arrangement. Those who aren't too fond of the chiptune version should check out the arrangement.
|
I was planning to nominate the SEGAAGES arrangement for forever before Uzuki nominated the Genesis version. :(
|
Just points this week:

Space Station: Silicon Valley (Game Rip) - Ice 'n' Easy Does It
It's just me or someone else thinks this one sounds like a polka? Polka or not, this is clearly folkloric oriented, the time signature reminds me of a waltz though. I like specially the piano line, but the composition itself is not particularly attractive. Lethal Enforcers (Sega CD Red Book Audio) - Shoot into the Street On the contrary that the rest of the sotw crew I am not impressed by this. It must be 'cause I've heard hundred of times the same generic synth-rock piece. To me, it sounds like a rejected battle theme for Final Fantasy VII. Nothing new, zero originality. The merit is hidden to my eyes. SILENT SCOPE TRILOGY Original Soundtrack - SUPREME An intricate and dense piece of music. It's pretty long and varied enough to keep me interested. It's impossible to predict what direction will take the music, it's almost like improvisational music. Although there is no strong melodic content, this moody track grabs my attention with its irregular rythms and neat atmosphere. Gain Ground (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - Origin ~Awakening~ (Heroes' Theme) [BGM1] It's a piece very well developped, one of the best ones in that aspect that I had heard for a Sega Genesis game. With the development in its favor, the rest shows aseptically packaged, emotionless. Apart from two enjoyable passages, this track leaves me indifferent. PHANTASY STAR COLLECTION Sound Collection I - DUNGEON MEDLEY (2 points) I am not going pretend to be impartial, this track belongs to one of my favorite vgm albums. I can't help but love, it's beyond me. Everybody who likes Phantasy Star music should know the existence of this great album, it's pure dynamite. DUNGEON MEDLEY is one of my favorite tracks, maybe my favorite one. It's a medley of different themes from PS with a rockin' and powerful arrangement. IMHO, everything flows effortlessly and the whole piece constitute an intense journey into the musical universe of Phantasy Star. Perfect Selection Twinbee - FANTASTIC POWERS (2 points) This arrangement seems to follow the same path that the previous one, with a synthier touch. The guitar screamings are the definite win. The melody here is very playful, which catches my fancy. It's a delight to listen to it and that is my bigger compliment (musically speaking). Phantom Kingdom Arrange Album - JOKER This one approaches dangerously close to unsubstantial lounge music, but it manages to elude this categorization. The exciting factor of which it lacks, it is supplied with the excellent interpretation of a late-night jam session. Soulful nomination, good choice. The Best of LucasArts Original Soundtracks - Underwater Lagoon (2 points) And direct from the Caribbean arrives my nomination. Underwater Lagoon is a track from "Escape from Monkey Island" as well pointed out orion_mk3. Like any other nominator (or that I believe), I always deposit a certain quantity of faith in all and each one of my nominations, because above all one nomination is an intimate expression of oneself. The piece itself is dominated by two simple basis, percussion as accompaniment and the hautboy (aka oboe) carrying the melodic line. The percussion set-up is very caribbean-ish, there is no much surprise here; however, the gorgeous and fascinating oboe solo justifies by itself my nomination, it's insanely great. I can assure you that this a fine and unique piece of music and I hope that someday you can enjoy so much like I do now. Just that. |
I'm not sure how long this thing will stay open, but I've got to run to work in a bit, and if I can't finish listening and get my votes in within the next few minutes, would it be possible to keep this from closing until around 11 or 12 when I get back?

I'll try to get my votes in tonight after the football game. For now, I'll say that I love Ice 'n' Easy; it's been a long time since a song got stuck in my head this much.
That's two SSSV songs in SotW that I've really enjoyed. Seems most people don't think much of it. *shrug* |
3 points - Gain Ground (Sega Genesis Game Rip) - Origin ~Awakening~ (Heroes' Theme) [BGM1]
1 point - Phantom Kingdom Arrange Album - JOKER 1 point - SILENT SCOPE TRILOGY Original Soundtrack - SUPREME 1 point - Space Station: Silicon Valley (Game Rip) - Ice 'n' Easy Does It |
EDIT: Alright, I listened to the songs more, and now I'm ready to vote.
Ice 'n' Easy - 2 pts. - Again, a song hasn't gotten stuck in my head this much in a long time. Thanks to whoever nominated it; I really enjoyed it. Underwater Lagoon - 2 pts. - This one was a pleasure to listen to. I'll have to check out more of Escape From Monkey Island's music. Joker - 1 pt. - The transition to faster-paced jazz at 2:28 was particularly appealing. The rest is quality stuff; I just would have liked to hear more of the up-tempo style. Supreme - 1 pt. |

I thought "Shoot into the Street" was cool the first time I heard it, but later on I found it repetitive and a bit dull in the melody. It's still a good song though. Shame that "Origin" didn't do better; it was a chiptune that grew on me over time. "Dungeon Medley" was still my favorite this week; good melodies within.

But, what a coincidence, choosing the top three tracks =) |
First win!
Last time I came so close, too. I came in second by 2 points... And I didn't vote! |
Another week, another Silver finish. I'm just a tiny bit bummed, since I felt FANTASTIC POWERS had the goods to earn Gold. In many other weeks, it likely would've; that's my solace.
Like Kaleb said, "Into the Streets" sounds cool the first time, but it grew a tad repetitive upon subsequent hearings with me too. But first impressions count for a lot in SotW, so perhaps "Into the Streets" had its edge there. But it's just nice to be back on the scoreboard again, after a trio of failed attempts. And it's nice to see Kyle earn his first Gold medal. Congratulations, Kyle! |
