I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this, but anyway just out of curiosity, how would your family – parents, siblings, grandparents and so on – react to any of the following revelations? If you like, you can also can also reverse these questions to ‘what would I do if my child told me....’


So:

1. What would your family do if you told them you were doing drugs?

2. If you told them you were going to marry some one of another race?

3. What would they do if you told them you were gay?

4. That you decided not to go to college, even though you have the grades and money to go?

5. That you were going to change your religion to one your family has never followed?

6. What would your family do if you said you had killed a person and needed help hiding from the police?

Considering I'm 22 years old, financially independent and probably have a different relationship with my parents than what the thread-maker is accustomed to, what my parents have to say is almost inconsequential. Also, they've been seperated since I was 5, so there's definitely a divergence going on there.

1. They'd probably be okay with it, actually. Depends on what kind of drugs and whether or not I let it become a destructive habit.

2. I'm the product of an interracial marriage, so... "congratulations, son."

3. My dad would be okay with it. My mom, I'm not sure. I certainly wouldn't be fearful of them disenfranchising me, they're more mature and understanding than that.

4. My mom never finished college and she's led a personally fulfilling lifestyle, so she'd be fine with it. My dad graduated from a military academy, and then went to pursue a masters in Aerospace engineering. Both emphasize the importance of education, but my mom feels that college degrees don't really give you the necessary tools to become a master of one's craft. As she held a management position in a highly technical field (mainframe software support) and ran circles around her peers who had master's degrees. Although, I personally place great importance on a formal post-secondary education, which is one the reasons I joined the military.

5. Both of my parents are Christian, albeit liberal, and I'm more of an agnostic. This seems to work out fine, as I don't go out of my way to flaunt my spiritual/moral beliefs out of respect for the fact that an individual is free to choose whichever path he/she feels is right.

6. If I had killed someone and was on the run, the last people I would involve are my family. They'd probably tell me something I already know, that it is my responsibility, my duty as a human being-- a conscious, free-thinking individual-- to accept responsibility for my actions. Although, I know that my mom would probably attempt to harbor me, and that would put me under a lot of guilt and I'd probably end up turning myself in.

Kick me out of the house, and tell me never to return or make contact with them again.

I wouldn't have thought that they won't mind

Accept it, I guess

They would tell me that it is my life and that I make my own decisions, and that if not going to college was one of them, then so be it

Our family isn't religious in the slightest, so I guess that they wouldn't really bother if I changed my religion, they would probably ask me not to go on about it around them though.

6. What would your family do if you said you had killed a person and needed help hiding from the police?
They would most likely turn me in to the police and dis-own me from the family.

They'd be shocked, because it's totally out of my character. If I did do drugs, though, the LAST people I'd tell about it are my parents. I would only tell them if I wanted to stop, and needed help, and they would definitely help me as best as they could.

No issue there. One of my older brothers married a Brazilian woman and my other brother's girlfriend is from Chad.

3. What would they do if you told them you were gay?
Uh, they'd probably be embarrassed. Perhaps disappointed, I don't know. It's hard to tell because I don't know any gay person in our family or in their circle of friends. I guess they'd ask if I'm really sure, and if I am, say it's my life and tell me to be careful.

4. That you decided not to go to college, even though you have the grades and money to go?
Depends what I have in mind. I'm a bit familiar with the issue because I've dropped out (changed majors) twice already. It's basically my decision, as long as whatever path I choose to follow is expected to provide me with a job and income in the forseeable future.

5. That you were going to change your religion to one your family has never followed?
We're mostly atheists. I don't think they'd have a problem unless I started going fanatical.

6. What would your family do if you said you had killed a person and needed help hiding from the police?
Harbour me for the time needed to convince me to turn myself in, which would be the most reasonable thing to do. Like Duo, though, I don't think I would involve my family - I don't want them to have to choose between helping me and becoming accomplices, or betraying me.

Hmm. Depends on what I was taking. They don't generally look well on drugs, but drugs as in the odd bit of weed here I think they might tolerate. If I did take drugs that is. Shit like cocaine and heroin, maybe niot.

They'd be like "why are you telling us this again?" >_> Technically I still don't have a clue so I'm going with bi.

They wouldn't care as long as I was doing something I loved. But if I had potential and I wasn't using it then they'd have something to say.

They wouldn't care. Religion is pretty much random in our family anyway, an atheist, a wiccan, a theist, one unknown and an agnostic buddhist wiccan (me).

6. What would your family do if you said you had killed a person and needed help hiding from the police?
I think they'd freak out a bit. But I wouldn't want to get them involved, and I hope they'd help me turn myself in. >_>

If the drug was anything but weed they would insist that I quit and likely check me into a detox clinic or whatever they're called. If it was weed they'd be pretty understanding but still try and make me quit.

My father would disown me and my mother would be angry at me for a while. She would eventually have a change of heart and try and convince my dad that my choice to marry across racial lines isn't as serious as he thinks that it is. There is about a 50/50 chance that he would listen to her and accept me as his daughter again.

My extended family, except for my Great Grandmother, Great Aunt, and Great Uncle on my dad's side, would never speak to me again.

Once again, my dad would disown me but my mom would be perfectly okay with it. She would try her hardest to make dad understand that me being gay isn't as horrible as he believes it to be, but I have a feeling that even if she talked to him that he would not have a change of heart. He would demand that my mom not visit with me ever again and that would likely lead to a divorce.

Everyone in my extended family except for my Great Aunt on my dad's side would never speak to me again.

They would force me. Simple as that. I would choose being forced to go to school over being kicked out of the house.

Dad would be very angry and Mom would think that it is a phase. If I kept that religion, they would eventually become accepting but would still bombard me with their religion, along with all of my extended family except for my mom's sister, in hopes that I would convert back.

My mom and dad would help me hide it. The odds are that if I ever killed somebody it would be in self defense, which seems okay and all but I guess that it's possible for an act of self-defense to seem intentional. If it were an act of cold murder, which I don't believe myself to be capable of, they would still help me hide it.

If I went to my extended family for help, they would rat me out.

1. Disown me, not before beating the shit out of me. alcohol and cigarettes underage included. My family is very, very touchy here. Not really because of past incidents, but whatever. I can manage.

2. Wouldn't talk to me for a week, and then they'd get over it. He'd still have to be appealing to both parents though, so he needs to have a good status/education/personality in order for my parents to accept him.

3. They would laugh and think I was kidding, or get pissed off. It's not really acceptable to them on any levels, mainly a culture thing. To be honest, even if I think hard enough I have no clue as to what they would say or do if I brought home a girlfriend. I think my mom would be a little more accepting though.

4. I'd get hell for it. I come from one of those families thats anal about security, so no chasing around wild dreams outside school unless there's a guarantee I can make shitloads of money doing it.

5. Probably nothing. My parents would be a little suprised since they are religious themselves, but they're not fanatical about it suprisingly.

6. This is a toughie. I really have no clue. I think my siblings, parents and extended family would try to find alternate ways to get me out of the situation, but eventually i'd probably have to do the "right thing" and turn myself in.

"You need a proper education but you're an adult and as long as you think you can support yourself, the choice is yours."

My family isn't religious at all, the only concern would be that I read enough to know what I'm getting into.

With these answers, keep in mind that I'm in my mid-20s and both parents have little influence over my personal choices. They've also been divorced for almost two decades. ;) I maintain a strong relationship with my mom but I'm not close to my dad.

Depends on the drug. If it was pot, my mom would probably be disappointed. Anything more dangerous and she'd be downright scared. Hard to say with my dad.

My mom wouldn't care. Not sure with my dad. Either way, it's a non-issue.

Been there, done that. My mom was supportive. My dad doesn't know (but there is the big potential of him freaking out).

My mom is Christian, although highly liberal. She's always been supportive of her kids finding their own path in life. As such, I'm agnostic (and still searching). Once again, I have no idea if my dad is religious (although strongly doubt it).

Freak out, I'm sure. Aside from that, I have no idea. Probably encourage me to turn myself in.

This question is actually applies to me. My family is Christian and I became a Pagan when I was 14 (even though I was most likely a Pagan since I was small and did not realize it at the time)

My father did not care really at all, he actually does not like going to church and goes just to keep mom happy, he questions the bible and religion itself more than I do.

My mother flipped when I put my foot down and refused to go to church. A few years later she would only nod when I told her I am Pagan and explained to her what it is, she would then go into the whole christian speech 'who put you on this planet' and crap. When Yule came my mother would say things like 'I guess you don't celebrate christmas so I guess you would be getting any presents' I then explained to her that Yule is the original xmas and 90% of the traditions that take place on it came from Yule... she just denied it.

I asked her why to we have a tree indoors and have holly and mistletoe. She had no clue.

Hrm. Well, at 20 and on my own, these are somewhat interesting.

If I told my parents I was doing drugs, my mom and dad probably wouldn't want to know, in all honesty. If they did know, and it was anything beyond pot, they'd probably encourage me to stop, and that's it. They've never been too aggresive in my life; they certainly wouldn't check me into a facitlity or anything, unless I was showing signs of dying or something (and that's if I got fucked up on heroin or something).

My parents would probably make a point over and over again if I was going to marry someone of another race, though they'd have no technical problem with it. Hell, considering my relationships with Japanese girls (lol @ nerd) my mom probably expects it, at this point. Heh.

If I said I was gay, my mom wouldn't care and my dad would just ignore it. He's kind of uncomfortable with the idea of relatives being gay, but with his brother and two of his nephews being gay, I don't imagine I would be too much of a shock.

They would shrug and say good luck if I chose not to go to school. And make me payback for the two years that I did go (they graciously said that if I could pay for living, they'll cover school, at least for the first two years). Again, they probably would be disappointed, but hardly demand anything or be melodramatic.

My mom wouldn't care less if I wasn't my father's religion. My dad, being extremely proud of his Jewish roots, would be pissed. Honestly, he'd prefer I was a gay drug addict who never went to school and had a black boyfriend then be not Jewish. Of course, I'm atheist, and he has more than an idea. We don't talk about it.

If I had killed someone, I would not tell my parents. They would not support that.

1. That's a hard one to imagine, but I can tell you I would have no place to stay. I get booted for minor things, for short periods of time (usually). I'd probably not have a chance for redemption, either.

2. My father and stepmother would definitelly have a problem with that, but wouldn't say anything. My mother wouldn't care, same for my step-father. As long as they didn't have to see or hear about it, they wouldn't care.

3. When I told my parent's I was bi, they didn't believe it at first. It took them two years to actually realize I wasn't trying to get attention, and then I was condemned to Hell. Huzzah! They seem relatively passive with it at the moment, as long as there's nothing between us while they're around.

4. If I wanted to stay at their house, all I'd have to do is pay rent. However, Hell hath no fury like my mother hearing such nonesense. The lectures would never end from that side of the family until I attended.

5. Something else that's already happened... When I told my father I was practicing Druidism and Wicca, he procceded to burn all my books, bitch and whine at my mother, and then resent me... As long as I don't talk about it, I'm golden.

6. My father would probably turn me in, but who the Hell knows... Depending on the severity of the offense, he might actually help out.

Depending on the kind, they'd probably be unimpressed. They did live through and participate in the 60s, after all. Saying that, however, they'd urge me away from continuing.

They would not be too happy. Can't say exactly what they'd do about it... probably just not approve. And not help with the wedding... maybe even not attend it. Hm.

Considering the fact that at one point my mom thought that I was, I'd say that they'd be ok with it. Maybe disappointed at the lack of grandchildren, but that's what my other two sisters would be for.

They would be disappointed, but they wouldnt force it on me. They survived without college.

Done and done, actually. Like Chibi Neko, I started leaning towards Paganism at a young age when I found myself believing in multiple Gods. I'm the only Pagan in our Christian family. We arent terribly religious though, so they mostly make fun of me for it, calling me a witch.

Depends on the family member. All in all though, they'd probably want to know the juicy details. Then they'd send me to Canada. lol. :)

very disappointed. they have high expectations of me, as does the extended family. it is stressed that good grades are achieved and that time spent now will pay dividends later.

i was raised irish catholic, but my dads an atheist....sooooo....no one would really care. today, we aren't that religous at all...only some of us attend church and usually only on holidays. yay god.

i would firstly not put this on my parents. But, depending on why i had killed the person or circumstances surrounding the situation...they might actually help me to hide. but this wouldonly happen after a long conversation detailing responsibility, conscience, etc. and only then if i still felt that i needed to hide.

Been there done that. Changed my religion about 4 times until I became a non-believer. I'd call myself atheist if I cared enough about anti-God theories, but I don't, so I suppose I'm agnostic. My mom has changed her religion many times, and my Dad isn't religious at all, so there was lots of freedom in this area for me.

Anything more then weed and they'd be concerned, but as for weed? Well, my mom and I shared a doob awhile ago, so I think its a non issue.

They would kill me on the spot. I won't even go there because I'm afraid of how I'll be treated.

I already did that and it turned out horrible, not on my family's part, though.

That'll never happen.

Again, they would kill me on the spot. Ever since I was younger, I was taught to "get it up here (brain)". Every time I see them, they're always talking about how knowledge is power. I guess they way they feel is that I need all the power I can get, so knowledge is key.

They wouldn't be happy at all and I would never do that.

They'd call the police on me. They don't hid criminals, no matter if we're blood or not. We're always taught to take responsibility for our actions.

it depends on what type of family you have really in answer to all questions. most families today are as understanding as people can get, but on an emotional level, it's dependant on the person. some families will explode at you, others will be hurt that these things happened, but try to help you out to overcome these issue. it takes 2 elements for this to work. you, for one, to have the courage to admit these things, and 2, your parents for how they'll take it. but have faith if you believe your parents care, and it'll all work out.

They would send me away to the hospital and rehab to get me off of anything I was on.

My brother would be very awkward around me and my sister too.... but for my parents.... hmmmm.... I don't really know how they would react. Probably negatively at first.... for a couple years.

2. I would like to think my parents are okay with that. I know my mom is totally fine with it, but my dad is more conservative and traditional... so he might have a heart attack first.

3. Hmm... That, I haven't thought about. I think my mom would just accept me the way I am, but my dad would cry, or even break the father-daughter relationship.

5. They would be totally okay with it. You gotta respect the other religions and learn and knowing that your old religion wasn't the one and only in this world.

My dad would have a SHIT FIT. I wouldn't even want to think about what he would do, since he's basically threatened us since we were kids that if we became drug addicts, he would disown us. I told my mom I smoked sometime and she took it pretty well, but there was an incident during the summer where she discovered my brother hit the pipe pretty hard on a daily basis, as well as experimented with coke, acid and other drugs. She didn't freak out but it really bothered her on a deep deep level. It's just hard for her to take that the kid she held in her arms was addicted to something.

They would be wierded out, especially if it was black or mexican person (they're racist, what can I say). But in the end, if they treated me well and was a good person, then they'd be able to accept it. Even better if he was a doctor with a degree from an Ivy League.

Both would think I'm joking. I don't know what they'd do if I was really serious, they both thing homosexuals are "wierd" and "perverse" but there was a time where we all suspected my half-brother was gay, and my dad didn't seem that bothered by it. So who knows, wierded out at first but they'll accept it after a while.

They would kick me out of the house and never talk to me again. Interestingly enough, they would take this worse than me doing drugs.

If it was on accident, they would probably do everything in their power to help me. If I killed someone in cold blood and didn't feel any remorse for it, they might turn me in.

Depends on the drug. There's a huge difference between marijuana and crack. There would equally be a huge difference in their reaction. They wouldn't aprove even of marijuana, though.

I guess they will have to deal with that one, if things continue as they are. They seem fine with it. What choice do they really have?

Then again, I'm honestly not sure my dad has really taken in that particular fact. It seems to kind of elude his notice. He's not actually met her yet, although my mom has. Marriage is a long way off, but dating someone of another race is basically the same as far as your folks are concerned, right?

I'm not sure they'd be all that accepting. They are Christians, after all. It's the sort of thing they'd take with a kind of forced politeness, if it were the case.

They would have been frankly dissapointed. College decisions are a long way behind me, though. For better or for worse.

I went through this one a long time ago... if you'll stretch a point to cover 'atheism' as a religion they don't follow. If I'd actually gone over to another religion, it might have been awkward. As it is, they respect my decision with all due grace.

I don't think they'd give me the time of day. They might, if I was lucky, give me an hour to get away from their house before calling the police. I'd do the same in their position, too. Murder is something that none of us would want to a party to, even in so limited a manner as hiding the criminal.

Freak. Nothing else. Probably confine me to the house. Something like that. It's a strictly no drugs kind of household. No drugs kind of family and extended family too I suppose. It's not the kind of thing that they look down on (well, not really) but it's the kind of thing that is definitely a big NO in our house.

Well, I've already had this discussion... I used to be suicidal and took a whole crapload of pills. They were cool about it. They sat down, talked with me, and began to understand why I was doing it. Since they were the reason for my self-medication, their understanding helped me a great deal.
