Heyo, I'm sure all of you have played at least one game in this series back when you were just spuds. It was fun seeing what horrible calamity befelled your little pioneer group, and to see who made it to the West coast.

Here's a hilarious review of the game.

For fun, I asked 4 fellow GFFers to come with me on my journey towards better things. I chose Doctor for my profession, and my party consisted of KrazyTaco, Jinn, Anichanic and Kamui. Below is the log of our trip.

I always wussed out and decided to be a banker. Those $2000 always made it easy to coast to the Pacific without much incident.

Yeah, I used to play this all the time back in grade school (and a bit in Middle School too.) It seemed rather challenging back then, but was a piece of cake when I tried it out via an emulator two years ago (I had nobody die and made it to Oregon before the winter if I recall correctly.) Heck, if I have some free time tonight I may run though this game again.

I also remember there being more than one (really cool) remake of this game, with better graphics and sound, but I don't know if it was cross-platform or not.

The game's been in some form of rotation from 1980-1999?, it's been remade several times to look and play better. Maybe other developers should release popular games every once and a while, even if it only lets it run on a newer OS.

Haha, what a perilous journey. Surprised only one person died, but then again being a doctor does help in that regard. Wonder what the best version of the game is, it did seem to get a lot of upgrades/sequels/remakes over the years. Wish they did that to other older games, I'd like to try updated versions of stuff like Lemmings and Wolf.

I've never played any of the newer games on CD-ROM and stuff, but I think the older ones are cooler to wade through.There's some charm to be had with those old-school graphics.

I've played another game called Yukon Trail which is the same thing except it's in the Yukon. I didn't like it very much though. The only bad things that befell me were thefts and wounded legs. That's pretty boring.

Hea, just played though again because I was bored. I decided to handicap myself and go as a carpenter, with little food (500 pounds) and little cash on hand. I did loose two people, once was my fault (out of food and starving) and the other just happend out of the blue, for no given reason. Oh, well at least I bested my previous score.

I always played Amazon Trail, where you had to take "photos" of a bunch of predetermined animals to earn jewels in this Mayan shield. Every time you arrived at a village, the date shifted about 50 years. Strange concept.

I loved this game - I used to play it all the time instead of programming with that stupid fucking turtle.

When Chuck Norris plays Oregon Trail his family does not die from cholera or dysentery, but rather roundhouse kicks to the face. He also requires no wagon, since he carries the oxen, axels, and buffalo meat on his back. He always makes it to Oregon before you.

You remember when you were playing the game Oregon Trail and you came Christopher Cross the Snake River that was 2 foot deep, you decide to cross it and you lose 3 wagon wheels, one child and your wife was
diagnosed with Parvo and they blamed it on Wagon Robbing Indians? Yeah that was Chuck Norris, he fucking robbed you, drowned your child with nunchucks and gave your wife herpes. Chuck Norris Owns you.

Yes, I'm awesome. ^^ I'm pretty sure that I have a copy of the mid-90's CD-ROM remake of the original Oregon Trail (not the FMV-filled sequels) somewhere; if I find it, I'll toss a copy up somewhere.

Oregon Trail is fun and all, but Math Munchers is a better game IMHO.

I used to play that game all the time back in grade school. Killing buffalo was never so easy. It seemed that there was always 1-2 people in my group that would always get sick, usually with cholera or dysentary.

I played this game as a kid, too. Except I got tired of stopping for sick people and everybody except me ended up dying in my party.

I just remember griping about the fact that every time I shot a buffalo, I'd only be able to carry back about 100lbs of meat or so. My character must have been a wuss. :(

Another moment of hilarity was when one of the party members received a broken leg and managed to wander off and get lost the next day, delaying the entire wagon by about 4 days when we went out to look for him.

Good times with the whole rafting ordeal though.

Or sometimes we'd play it just to purposefully screw ourselves over. For example, by fording a 7-foot-deep river. And then if someone drowned we'd be callous enough to say, "Ah, the moron deserved it if he can't even swim."

I remember how nervous I'd get at caulking a wagon and floating across a river because of that slight chance of the wagon tipping. Or when you had to float down the Columbia River.

Later makes of the game seemed quite a bit harder, I think. For example, if someone got sick I'd have a few options on what to do, usually being stuff like administering some medicine I'd never heard of before in my whole life, let alone even knew what they were used for. And then they die afterward, big surprise there. :annoyed: Or getting to some steep rocky hill with options that don't list the pros/cons/risks of the choices. And with those, it often seemed like it didn't matter which choice you picked, something bad would happen.

The first and only to die =(. Ironically enough before I decided to lend my name to the adventure I told Freelance that "I rock at Oregon Trail."

I remember playing this in 3rd and 4th grade. I used to just go hunting and after I killed like everything just turned off the game.

I live ^_^. I was mad at myself though, how many times can I play with snakes and get bitten yet continue to mess with them :/

On another note: Wont anyone think of the oxen?

Oxen are expensive. Your children work well as wagon-pulling slaves.

i still have a 3 1/2" floppy at home with this game on it... and maybe a 5 1/4 as well (which would be nice, as i still have a 5 1/4 drive in my pc).

I do remember this game, back in the day compared to other programs like Mavis beacon typing and stuff oregon trail was kinda like the CS of the day to me. I just remember stocking up on a bit of food but I would buy tons of bullets, bullets upon bullets and just go hunt game. Just a damn shame there was a limit on how much meat I could bring back, damn idiot should've just brought the wagon train to the meat. And river crossings! darned fee-charging indians, hell after buying up all the bullets I could i didn't have enough money left over to pay for the crossing, so I never paid for a crossing, unfortunately one time the crossing took away most of my bullets and I actually had to watch how many bullets I used on the trip until I got to a outpost.

I'd have the same kid get bit by a snake like every week.

Maybe I should play it and post here a dramatic diary of the trip talking about the rediculous things that go on. Oh, and LEARN TO EAT MEAGER, YOU LITTLE BASTARDS!

Ah, I remember this. Oregon Trail was one of my favorite games as a child. It was fun at first but it eventually got boring and repetitive after five or so journeys. The sad part is that one person ALWAYS die when I play (I don't think the leader dies?).

Fun times. I used to play this on Apple computers my school had ;D Lime green text, black monitor...

I loved this game. I always would play it when I was younger. I remember I would go hunting and take a ridiculous amount of food, just for it to go bad a few days later. I never made it to the end with more than one person left. It's a shame that my whole family died every time

Loved it when you took the gamble to cross a river and your cart messes up and you lose a wheel or something and maybe someone drowns, lol.

I think I actually got everyone to the end once. We used to play this in keyboarding class. It was just fun to see what happened to everyone. Especially after you name your family after you best friends.

Where'd you get that emulator to work? All copies of it I found were bad.

If anyone wants, I can give the people Oregon Trail Deluxe, which is the game I used to run my little GFF adventure. It's around 4MB.

I saw this game at x-play once, i heard its fun never tried it though so if you will share please.

Oregon Trail I was a lot of fun, and brings back memories from like, elementary school...but only for the hunting.

Oregon Trail II was fun for everything else, especially when you got to buy all that stuff before you headed out on your journey. Cause in I, you only bought like pounds of food, oxen, and a couple other things. In II, you had to buy every type of medicine, food, clothes, etc.

I wish my Oregon Trail II cd still worked. :\
I think you can find Oregon Trail I somewhere online though. I got it off of a facebook group.

Some things I remember about this game (actually, I beat it recently, so good times, but not as good as these):

-Having the program stop half-way from loading and changing the code around so that I'd have a super amount of cash or whatnot.

-Dying, then trying again, only to find my own grave...eek!

-The Mac Version. Man, did that version hate me. I started out, two steps later, fire, two steps more, someone died, three steps more, got robbed, a few steps more, someone's sick, two more steps, an oxen is dead, a few more steps and me made it to the river, thank goodness.

Whoooooooooooooooooooa there though, not so fast. Gotta actually CROSS the river. Half-way across, the majority of my food washed away. Don't worry though, two people drowned as well. Lost some other things too.

Anyway, we are back on solid ground and....darn it, outta food, let's go hunting! Go hunting for a day, no go...but we can try again--wait, hold their partner, just got robbed and left only a few bullets (I think, my memory blurs the last bit of what happened with hunting. I may had lost some bullets in the water, or they were stolen earlier, or I didn't buy enough). Okay, time to keep going, we can make it, we can...wait, another person gone, down to one. Well, we still have ONE person left and we are almost, almost, nah, just kidding, that person's gone too.

Oh well, at least I can make a time inscription for old time's sake...wait there though, the game isn't done yet. IT decides to FREEZE UP before I can actually quit the game (and save the inscription).

Ouch.

Wow. So many memories of this game. My most vivid memory of this game is when my friend and I were playing this on an old Apple and then we came across a headstone that said "FUCK YOU." The funny thing is that I think I probably put that...it was bound to happen guys...

Anyway, when I played this in middle school, I got around 7000 because I played the farmer. It's really not that difficult. Just don't push your oxen and take it slow...really slow.

I definitely need to research into this emulator software. Of course it should've existed, I can't believe I didn't research it when I grabbed a copy of Oregon Trail.

As much as I love the game, it's damn hard when all the stupid animals zip by your screen and it takes like 5 bullets to shoot one of those damn buffalo.

Of course, it makes for quick games of the Trail.

Still, I've enjoyed indulging in the past every now and then. Some of the best times I spent in elementary school was playing Oregon Trail (when we were "allowed", sometimes we've have to play a math game or something like that). That damn mini-game where you go down the river at the end is still just as scary as it was back in the day.

I remember not having to hunt at all (a cheat I remember on how to get more food for nothing or something like that), but that of course, I havent played it since 1992.

Once as I was starting out in OT Deluxe on the Mac, a thief stole ALL my oxen!

Please tell me it was while you were in transit....or crossing a river.

This came up in class the other day, when we were talking about how Apple got such a foothold in the market by supplying classrooms with tons of computers. I really feel for today's children, not growing up with Oregon Trail. They are really missing out.

It's like the collective secret language for an entire generation of Americans. You can turn to just about anybody in their twenties and make a crack about how you shot 900 pounds of food but could only carry 100 pounds back to the wagon, and you'll get a laugh.

Wow, my thread is still going strong. However, how come nobody is actually posting logs of their adventures? I want to see someone have 2 broken legs and still manage to get lost AND drive the wagon to freedom.

Holy crap. Talk about a blast from the past. I vividly remember playing this in school and never having enough time in class to finish it.

If I found a working copy of it, I'd document every interesting day in humurous detail.

I was thinking about mentioning this a few days ago, but didn't think it was important enough to bump the thread over. But since it seems to have been revived anyway, I have to ask...has anyone played that "Amazon Trail" game? I saw it in one of the budget racks in Shopko, and it had a big "From the creator's of Oregon Trail" sticker on the front. But it looked really cheesy, like your tour guide was a photograph of a person. But it was really cheap, so eh, maybe I'll pick it up and see if it's really that bad. If it is, I'll put it up on YSI for everyone else to download and laugh at.

Seems like quite a few people played this game in school. I'm one of them too. I don't get what the point of computer class was in elementary, since all it was Oregon Trail everytime. It was fun though.

Of course everyone played Oregon Trail in school.

When your other option was "Sim Town," Oregon Trail won every time.

Unless you had access to Math Workshop, then that usually won out ;_;

I managed to get 100x the old score record at my school.

Played as a teacher (x3.5 bonus), started as early as possible, bought almost nothing except bullets. Then just constantly, constantly stop and shoot. Sure you "overhunt the area" but if you just keep hunting occasionally a dear or bison will pop up. Then, just keep running trades until you get someone who'll trade you something useful for 75 pounds of food.

I rolled into the Oregon with almost maximum in everything and everyone was alive. But I had to devote a few weeks to just the one game, unfortunately.

i remember this game from like fourth grade. haven't played it since then, sadly.now that's a talented thievery i wish i could pull off.

Who would've thought my old thread could still be getting replies today?

I loved it when one of my crew members managed to break both his legs, got sick, and still managed to get lost, which halted the entire journey until the rest of us found him.
