Man Wins 'Rock, Paper, Scissors' Contest
Quote:
lol... how idle do you need to be in order to do something like this, besides, it would be lame if there werent a $50000 prize for the winner at vegas:edgartpg: |
|
If they used the extreme version, where there's like 50 different objects to choose from, maybe it would be more acceptable.
|
What is so ridiculous about this all is that it is almost a purely luck-based sport.
Still, that seems really awesome. |
Are there even strategies you can employ in a game of rock, paper, scissors? Isn't it all just luck?
|
Zapp: How do I know these scissors aren't part of some Neutral plot?
Leela: But they're not even sharp. Who could I possibly hurt with them? Zapp: The Yarn People of Nylar 4? [He points at the pink creatures made of string.] So, a plan to assassinate a weird-looking alien with scissors. How very Neutral of you. Leela: What? Zapp: It was almost the perfect crime, but you forgot one thing: Rock crushes scissors ... but paper covers rock ... and scissors cut paper. Kif, we have a conundrum. [Kif sighs.] Search them for paper, and bring me a rock. |
Wouldn't it be interesting if the rules of Rock, Paper, Scissors were realisitic? Like in medieval times, a man could disable the catapult by covering it with a sheet.
|
The best part is how each three-move combination has a different name. Like if you throw rock, rock, rock, it's called the avalanche haha.

"But sir, we can't run with these!" "Very well, walk quickly." "Sir! My mom won't let me use scissors." *soldiers laugh at him* "Soldier, the men are right to laugh at you. These things couldn't cut butter." *Enemy launches butter. The battle is won* |
It's weird to compete seriously in this game, isn't it all about luck?
I mean, you can't really be good at it. |
How could this even be considered a sport? That's about as sensical as racing being a sport.
There's no way to predict what someone is going to do, so the game is based purely, yes purely, 100%, on luck. What a sport. |

reading that made me laugh. I mean, how do you make it an organized sport? A game based on pure luck and no skill.
Of course they made poker into a sport as well but only because you have to actually have enough skill to fake out your opponent.. you can't fake out your opponent at rock paper scissor? |
Pfff, "professional Rock, Paper, Scissors". That's just something invented for the wimps that can't handle professional Russian Roulette.

My last year of teaching, I had my intro students write AI for rock, paper, scissors, and then pitted people against each other. I would run 50-simulations of best-of-three games, and, surprisingly, the results didn't appear random. Most of the people who made it to the semifinals had won all their previous matches 50-0. We found that the people who tried to have a strategy pretty much all lost to the people who ran things completely randomly.

Wow...heh....now I wouldn't mind seeing a "hi, bob" drinking competition...
if you don't know what hi bob is....don't ask. Probably older than I should know about... |
i never knew such a simple game is now a throw for the gamble :\ interesting, interesting.... *contemplates*

They do, however, use larger caliber. And the gun is gold plated. |

It's amlost like having cash prizes for winning at russian roulette, but safer.
|
maybe they will allow little kids to gamble in this game too...

I won a rock, paper, sissors contest once in 3rd grade^^ All I got tho was a huge baf of popcorn.
... I kinda hate the name rock, paper, scissors. Here in Hawaii we call it Jan Ken Po http://www.jbrowse.com/text/janken.shtml |

This is crazy, I'm reading the "7" pages of adavanced rules of RPD.
Apprently, this is really big, maybe I should start practacing....Does this mean if I got real good at RPS, I could become rich? I think I'm going to throw a cresendo for the win... |
Well, there must some secret behind how he wins. It could be a good skill to solve disputes and have it your way.
|
I'm bored, let's play a little bit Rock, Paper, Scissors here. After all, this is a serious game.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...eluxe/rock.jpg Come on, try to beat me! |
Honestly I never given much thought to Jan-Ken-Pon as I always believed it had more to do with luck than messing with your opponent's head. This link makes the strategy of the game look more like chess. I'm gonna try these two-level feints the next time I'm caught up in a Jan-Ken-Pon match.

Snake beats water?
Devil DOES beat human. But not dragon. This has some merit. |
wow... so many lines.
Really thanks, but no thanks. I think I can live without ever playing a more complicated version of a stupid game. |
That's an interesting version of the game. I find it a bit amusing how "sponge" beats "air."
|
lol gun beats tree, must be some gun...
|
Sponge OWNS. There's another version of it with even more moves, and sponge beats NUCLEAR EXPLOSION.
|
OH YEAH?!
STEAM SHOVEL!!! Nothing beats steam shovel.. It just can't be done.. that simple, case closed! Now where MY 50,000 dollar reward for that?! http://www.cartoonclipart.com/images/steamshovel.gif |

I can't see myself using that version any time soon. Far too much thinking involved followed by looking at a chart for reference (when we figure out the guy was throwing tree and not rock.) Quote:
Sponge beats dragon? Must be those deep sea sponge. |

As for organized waving of hands at each other, that's simply lol, but makes perfect sense with the way our society has been going. It was just the next evolutionary step I guess. |
Wow, that guy must've been really lucky. I'm highly anticipating the national tournament in Vegas.
|
I saw some champion of this "sport" on a G4 show a year or so back.
Man, what a way for anyone to play without risking serious injury. |

Anyway, what next? Foursquare? :tpg: EDIT: Though actually, foursquare can be pretty fun. |
Well, the picture Kairyu posted is "just" RPS15. In addition to this, there also exists RPS25.
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a1...luxe/rps25.jpg Cockroach beats Alien, Dragon, Devil, Lightning and Nuke. :tpg: |
WTF... LOL at Nuke and Alien. Someone must've been pretty fucking bored to come up with that, even though some of the things on there are hilarious depending on what they beat.
Okay, how does Snake beat Monkey, but said Monkey beats Woman AND Man. At least Nuke beats them all, maintaining some semblance of balance in the universe. |
Lollin' at "woman beating man." I suppose "man beats woman" isn't any better, though.
|
Okay I officially love that RPS25 picture! My guess is that whoever is first interested will pick "Nuke", being the coolest sounding and flashiest hand pose. So for easy wins, just pick sponge and soak up the nuke. Don't forget the squeezing motion!
