Man killed by pet spider and turned into dead human nest...

I don't know just how much truth this holds as I've heard The UK Sun is a mite sensationalist (as proven by the article itself) buuuuuuuut if there's any truth to it at all.....

A MAN who lived in his own “zoo” of lizards and insects was fatally bitten by a pet black widow spider — then eaten by the other creepy-crawlies.

Police broke in to Mark Voegel’s apartment to find spider Bettina along with 200 others, several snakes, a gecko lizard called Helmut and several thousand termites had gorged on his body.

Neighbours alerted police after becoming alarmed by the stink and horrified officers were met by a nightmare scene.

A police spokesman said: “It was like a horror movie. His corpse was over the sofa. Giant webs draped him, spiders were all over him. They were coming out of his nose and his mouth. There was everything there one could imagine in the world of reptiles. Larger pieces of flesh torn off by the lizards were scooped up and taken back to the webs of tarantulas and other bird-eating spiders.”

Loner Voegel, 30, never invited people back to his “jungle” home, a small apartment in the German city of Dortmund. Police described it as a cross between a botanical garden and the butterfly breeding ground in the serial killer movie The Silence Of The Lambs.

One tarantula had built a nest the size of a swallow’s in a corner of the ceiling. Voegel also had a boa constrictor and several poisonous frogs from South America.

Spider expert and animal cruelty officer Gabi Bayer said he kept creatures “that should never be allowed in a private home. He had spiders so aggressive they are the equivalent of a pit-bull in the animal world.”

The reptiles were allowed to roam free in the flat. The heating elements on two tanks containing spiders and their termite snacks had exploded and dislodged the metal tops allowing them to escape.

Voegel is thought to have been dead for between seven and 14 days. A post-mortem will be carried out in the next few days. But authorities believe Bettina alone was responsible for Voegel’s death.

That's awesome. I want to see pictures of it. Wait, I mean... what a tragic story.

Really though, I'm curious to see what the guy and his house looked like when the police burst in.

Dullenplain Dec 12, 2006 04:50 PM

Good lord, I don't think I want to be part of the autopsy team for this one . . .

Nyoro~n Dec 12, 2006 04:51 PM

Even if it's true I guess it is exaggerated.

Magi Dec 12, 2006 05:03 PM

That is pretty morbid, killed by your pet and eatten. Darwin award indeed, ending up in the buttom of the food chain.

This is getting out of hand. Those poor pits.

Don't really see anything horrific about the actual death though. It's not like all the animals ganged up on him while he was still alive. Now that would be horrific.

Balcony Heckler Dec 12, 2006 05:14 PM

that sounds almost like something you'd hear out of the Saw movie series

Honestly. Who keeps black widows as pets?

mindOverMatter Dec 12, 2006 05:27 PM

I think that at least he died doing what he derived most pleasure from in this world: deadly animals

Spatula Dec 12, 2006 06:21 PM

Thank god there were no pics ;___;.

What movie does this remind me of? At any rate, seeing one or maybe two, I just take out my vacuum cleaner and suck it up, but with this? God damn!

Wow, I have trouble thinking of some worse way to die... Or maybe to find someone to died...

Paco Dec 12, 2006 06:43 PM

I really really really want to see images from this. I can understand keeping pet scorpions but BLACK WIDOWS? Darwin Award indeed.

*AkirA* Dec 12, 2006 07:06 PM

Anyone automatically picture the corpse from that movie Arachnaphobia?

Snowknight Dec 12, 2006 07:09 PM

It is my understanding--as I am told by a professor of biology--that fatal black widow bites are actually quite rare. Combine that with becoming a spider nest, and you've got me quite suspicious as to the validity of this story.

Mucknuggle Dec 12, 2006 07:41 PM

Rare because most people are smart enough to stay away from the fuckers.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Dec 12, 2006 07:48 PM

Agreed.

There would be more shark related deaths if people kept them in their bathtubs and showered with 'em, y'know.

Shoeless Dec 12, 2006 08:12 PM

I really want to see pics of this.

The Wise Vivi Dec 12, 2006 08:19 PM

Wow! Wicked! Well, on second thought, creepy as hell can be. I would be appalled and disgusted if I were one of the people that walked in there for the first time. The stench, the reptiles, and everything. When I first read it, I thought it would be awesome to see some pics. But I came to my senses quickly.

Quoted For Truth.

Anyways, this story is ridiculous. I mean, I've heard of stories of people with too many cats, dogs, etc. But not spiders and reptiles you shouldn't have in your home.

I would want to see pictures, but I realized that upon seeing such pictures I'd probably be close to throwing up.

Drex Dec 12, 2006 11:21 PM

I'm skeptical as to the validity, but just the concept gives me chills. I'm not a critter person, and I am definitely not a spider person. Eww. *shivers*

nazpyro Dec 12, 2006 11:30 PM

Wow. One of the most ridiculous deaths ever. I'm somewhat interested into how they traced it back to that exact spider's bite. I guess the body wasn't mutilated enough where he was bitten. Hm, :tee-pee-gee:...

Elixir Dec 12, 2006 11:40 PM

Great, now I feel like there's spiders crawling all over me after reading that.

I for one do not want to see pictures of this. It'd creep me the fuck out for days on end.

Servilonus Dec 13, 2006 01:04 AM

I would love to see pictures of that, on the other hand.

But I didn't bother to read the article once I a) saw the source and b) realized it could never live up to my expectations when I read the thread title.

EDIT: Nevermind, this was pretty awesome actually,

Muzza Dec 13, 2006 01:09 AM

Dude, I have no fucking idea how I'd react if I saw the scene. It'd be even worse if cockroaches were involved...*shudders*

Me too. I'm all paranoid now. And knowing my luck with bugs I'll come across something nasty some time today.

For some reason, when I read this I pictured the girl from the intro of "The Ring"(?), just with bugs crawling out of her and such. And yes I do realise that the victim here is a male.

And also a maniac.

actually, black widow bites are usually only fatal if you're allergic to the venom, or if your immune system can't handle it. the spiders have very tiny fangs that inject a very tiny amount of venom, so a healthy human should have no problems surviving a bite without more than some discomfort (it's very possible that they'll show some signs of lactrodectism). which is why i find this story seriously hard to swallow.

plus. you know. the sun, lol.

bahamuty Dec 13, 2006 02:12 AM

Yikes! Just the picture in my imagination freaks me out. I hate spiders.

Lights explode and the metal lids break open on tanks of deadly spiders
how unlucky can you be.

Ugh then to think the lizards are all roaming free in the place crapping everywhere. What a mess.

A mite is quite the understatement. Still, fun fictuous reading for people who aren't gullible I suppose.

Luckily I'm going through a phase where I am not too bothered by the thought of insects, otherwise this would have really disturbed me. Especially the bit about finding his corpse with the spiders coming out of his nose :psyduck:

munchkin13 Dec 13, 2006 07:25 AM

Creepy, horrifying and just plain nasty. I hate spiders and now I feel like any outside are looking at me thinking "yum" lol
