F-Zero Climax (Game Rip) - Illusion
RAWK ON. Awesome track. Seriously, this is the kind of stuff I love, and I'm glad it's a from F-Zero game since it's been a while I liked anything from that series. Going to get the full gamerip ASAP!

Genocide 2 Master of the Dark Communion (Sharp X68000 Game Rip) - Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly
My nomination ~

-> I was wondering btw, what's the stance considering voter's own nominations?

GunValkyrie Official Soundtrack - Killing bedroom
Electro-lounge stuff are not my cup of tea ...

Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion
What a strange choice ... I mean, I like that one, but there are a bunch I would have chosen from the Ys 4 PC over it.

Royal Blood - Flame
Interesting composition. I was thinking it sounded like something Yoko Kanno could have done when I saw it was from a KOEI game. Not Kanno, though. Definitely going to check the full album as well.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Game Rip) - Staff Credit Game
hehe, this so has Sega written all over it. Quite an enjoyable listen all along. I've always like upbeat medleys. =p

Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4)
hehe, I always liked the Amiga's flute sounds. Really enjoyable listen here too. Another thing to find for download on my list. ;_;

Timesplitters 2 (Game Rip) - Training Ground
Martial stuff generally don't do much to me. The alternative rhythm in the end is nice, though.

3 pts: F-Zero Climax (Game Rip) - Illusion
2 pts: Genocide 2 Master of the Dark Communion (Sharp X68000 Game Rip) - Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly
1 pt: Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4)

There are no rules. Maximum bias and nomination pimpage is not only permitted but often encouraged.

Many people use the oppurtunity to talk about why they nominated the piece, or to give a detailed breakdown of why they like it.

As far as points go, you're free to give your nom the full 3 points. Some, myself included, also try to stack the deck by awarding 1 point to three other songs, reducing their chances of placing.

EDIT:

Wow. I won't go that far, but definitely won't retain to vote what I think it's worth, then. =)

It's actually a *tad* inaccurate, now that you make me look further into it. Ryuiji Sasai worked on Xak 1 and 2 along with Tadahiro Nitta. However, I only have confirmation for the PC88 versions, and not the ports. The compositions are the same (I tagged the FM-Towns redbook after the Xak 1 and 2 OST), but the arrangers may differ as it's often the case. Plus, there is no way to know who of Nitta or Sasai actually composed that one. I'll edit accordingly.

Obscure stuff he worked on are also Xak Gaiden and Heart of Phantasm III (Mugen no Shinzo 3).

Yet another good week.

F-Zero Climax (Game Rip) - Illusion
Quite a good listen, though nothing attention-grabbing for me. The sounds were mostly subdued.

Genocide 2 Master of the Dark Communion (Sharp X68000 Game Rip) - Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly
Sweet melody, somewhat akin to Ys tracks. The frantic pace is a plus. And that Yamaha chip's keyboard sound is music to my ears.

GunValkyrie Official Soundtrack - Killing bedroom
A relaxed track with some interesting parts, though somewhat on the verge of boring.

Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion
!REVERBERATION! Add to that a very cool array of sounds.

Royal Blood - Flame
An average oriental composition. Nothing bad about it, and it was pleasant.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Game Rip) - Staff Credit Game
What a great track! Fun and engaging throughout, with a number of tempo changes.

Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4)
Just love those Amiga synths and flutes, even though the melody is the sort of cliche you hear in almost all Egyptian-themed levels. Too bad I've never played this far into the game, to experience the rest of its good music. The game kinda sucked. :tpg:

Timesplitters 2 (Game Rip) - Training Ground
Dull militaristic tune. Least favorable track this week.

- The Point Spread -

2 points: Genocide 2 Master of the Dark Communion (Sharp X68000 Game Rip) - Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly
2 points: Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Game Rip) - Staff Credit Game

Still very interesting--all the sources I ever see say that Sasai had stopped composing after Tobol No. 1. Do you think you could share any of those, one Sasai fan to another? I always bemoan the fact that he didn't write more.

Those actually are his early works, all around 1988/89. I can send you the Xak stuff, but I don't have Mugen no Shinzo 3. Knurek have it working in Hoot, and I've been thinking of doing a recording of it for a while, but never found the time. Some of it sounds neat, from what I could hear.

Sceptre X Dec 11, 2006 05:19 PM

What? I LOVE Training Ground! uggg, I don't like people any more. :(.

Very nice week, I was impressed, though not shaken.

F-Zero-Excellent, fast paced track that embodies the spirit of the game perfectly.

Genocide-A typical RPG fight song. Nothing new.

GunValkyrie-A well done, smooth track that reminds me of Water from Advent Children. Not my cup of tea, but props nonetheless.

YS-Very cool effects, with just the barest of a song to back it up. I wish there was more melody, because the rest is done so well.

Royal Blood-This is my cup of tea. A nice, oddly out of tune but satisfying violin front wins this some points.

Monkey Ball- Not bad, but not good either. Monkey Ball perkiness to the limit.

Superfrog-Typical Egyptian level fluff, though the frog croak is a nice effect.

Timesplitters-My nom, and one of my favorite game songs. Not only does it have a great, full melody, but it's backed up by a moving bass. It's not really milaristic as it is cowboy epic.

3 points-Timesplitters
2 points-Royal Blood
1 point- F-Zero

Now somebody tell me my nom wasn't a complete failure?

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Dec 11, 2006 10:46 PM

F-Zero Climax: Not bad, but not that amazing either. It seems fairly standard for a racer, by which I mean "aggressive" and "generic". A more distinctive melody with better sound seperation would've been a big plus.

Genocide 2: It's decent, but it somehow lacks any one element that stands out to grab my complete attention. Maybe it's actually too fast; a slower tempo might actually improve this one.

GunValkyrie OST: A rather nice groove. I've been in a trance mood lately, and this track satisfies. I often enjoy pieces that feel "dark" without feeling "angry". This one's cool and detached. I like it.

Perfect Collection Y's IV: It's a mixed bag for me. There are elements that I highly like (the slow, spanish guitar work) and elements that I felt were overcooked (the "plinking" synth that served as an ersatz percussion line throughout). It's good enough for a point, though.

Royal Blood: Sorry, I've listened to the entire album and I know there's better to offer. 'Flame' is okay, but I would've liked to see a different track represent the album in SotW. I've been considering a couple for nomination for quite some time. Perhaps I should call one up soon.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz: Our first Wii nomination! I've always been slightly disappointed with Monkey Ball music, but this one's a step in the right direction. Catchy, perky and some good variations. A potential winner.

Superfrog: Allister Brimble is someone whose body of work I've just begun to explore (expect a Brimble track from me in the very near future). His style is quite apparent in this, although I am rather neutral on the overall nature of the track. But what makes Brimble so interesting is his ability to wildly change the genre of his composition while remaining true to the quirks that comprise his musical signature. I might give this a point solely due to name factor; SotW needs more Allister Brimble.

Timesplitters 2: Graeme Norgate is pretty much the only composer who can make militaristic tracks that don't annoy me. 'Training Ground' is still more oppressive than I prefer, though. But there are some nice subtleties to Norgate's work that I can appreciate.

NUMBERS!!

2 Points: Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Game Rip) - Staff Credit Game
2 Points: GunValkyrie Official Soundtrack - Killing bedroom
1 Point: Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4)
1 Point: Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion

There was some interesting variety this week. No homeruns for me, but several doubles and a triple. Pretty good week, in my opinion.

F-Zero Climax (Game Rip) - Illusion
This is actually a pretty decent song that stays active throughout... but for some reason, the sequences just don't seem to make me completely addicted to the song. I guess it's just average good.

Genocide 2 Master of the Dark Communion (Sharp X68000 Game Rip) - Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly
I also really like the synth instrument that makes up the melody, which is also pretty good. I agree with Crash on this song - it's possibly that a slower tempo might make this song even better. Nevertheless, I still thing this is a better track in this pool.

GunValkyrie Official Soundtrack - Killing bedroom
Unfortunately, the song only really starts to get pretty good at around 1:18. But besides that, it is actually a decent groove.

Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion
Wow... this song is very interesting... and totally different from all of the rest. I think this song might be getting higher marks for me, because of the way the melody is very experimental. It's something quite new for a taste.

Royal Blood - Flame
This really isn't oriental enough for me to stick it in that genre of game music. I think this song is lacking something to make me want to vote for it, except for possibly the end of the track.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Game Rip) - Staff Credit Game
This track is obviously separate from a lot of the rest. It's absolutely addicting, and I'm not sitting around waiting for a soundtrack instead of just a game rip. By the way, how are the other tracks in this game rip?

Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4)
Whoa... this is a really quirky song and it's actually kind of interesting because of its simplicity. But, I don't know. I'm not always completely interested in this track.

Timesplitters 2 (Game Rip) - Training Ground
The beginning of this song for me sounds like the opening to any sort of normal military march. The repetition of the same theme really gets boring by the end of the song, even though there's a switch in rhythm.

Scores:
3pt: Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Game Rip) - Staff Credit Game (8.5)
2pt: Genocide 2 Master of the Dark Communion (Sharp X68000 Game Rip) - Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly (7.5)
1pt: Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion (7)
...
Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4) (6.5)
GunValkyrie Official Soundtrack - Killing bedroom (6.5)
F-Zero Climax (Game Rip) - Illusion (6)
Royal Blood - Flame (5.5)
Timesplitters 2 (Game Rip) - Training Ground (5)

orion_mk3 Dec 12, 2006 12:45 PM

F-Zero Climax (Game Rip) - Illusion Somewhere, writ large in stone, is an immutable commandment: RACERS SHALT HAVE DULL TECHNO/ROCK MUSIC. So it is written, so it is done. Few are those who dare defy this edict, and Illusion is not among their number.

Genocide 2 Master of the Dark Communion (Sharp X68000 Game Rip) - Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly Like a racer song only with with substance and synthy melody. Not exactly attention-grabbing, as noted eslewhere, but a solid if undemanding listen.

GunValkyrie Official Soundtrack - Killing bedroom A neat, though repetitive, tune. I found some of the instrumental textures interesting, but I kept wishing a melody would appear and marshall them to greater purpose.

Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion Our second track called "Illusion" this week (surprised no one else has noticed that) is far stronger than the first. The reverb here is used to interesting effect, especially once it's formed into a melody. Definitely not your standard fare, and interesting enough to make me want to overlook weaknesses in execution (the long sections of nothing but reverb'd plinks, for example).

Royal Blood - Flame A mess. Yea, there is writ a second commandment on that great rock of VGM. It doth read: ALL ORIENTAL-STYLE MUSIC SHALT BE GENERIC OR SHALT SUCK. Fewer still are those songs that spurn these two holy writs, and surely "Flame" be guilty of one.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Game Rip) - Staff Credit Game I guess I was expecting something cutsier from a game with the word "banana" in the title--the "bananas" suggested by this track are of a wholly different type. I like the melody, but there are a lot of parts that don't feature it.

Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4) Definitely got the Egyptian part of the whole pyramid equation down, and it's not a bad song once the other instruments kick in, but I was hoping for something a bit more complex.

Timesplitters 2 (Game Rip) - Training Ground Where militaristic tunes are concerned, the question is always the relationship between the melodic and rhythmic aspects of the track. It's easy for repetitive snares and percussion elements to dominate a track, and that's exactly what happens here. There are some nice flourishes, though.

What better way for _DH_ to return than by adding another statuette to his trophy room? I'm nothing if not envious :)

The Point Spread
Ys - 2 pts.
Genocide - 2 pts.
GunValkyrie - 2 pts.

THE POWER OF WATER Dec 12, 2006 03:22 PM

Yeah, seven wins is kinda ridiculous. And that's without the 19-week hiatus. :(

Nomination Time! Something that will be better than the "militaristic" stuff you all hate. :(

Song: Terran Song 3
Album: StarCraft
Artist: Blizzard
Track: 4 (maybe...)
Year: 1998
Source: http://www.fileplanet.com/ (hosted somewhere on there...)
Notes: "Terran Song 2"' won the SotW several months ago, but 3 is much more progressive and ends in a fantastic climax. It's one of Blizzard's best songs, and I really back it up. It's great for listening to as you browse forums...:P

TheKnightOfNee Dec 12, 2006 05:58 PM

lol @ "Cancelled forever!"

3 points - GunValkyrie Official Soundtrack - Killing bedroom - Definitely some good chill out music. Very nice groove, like other have said.

2 points - Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4) - The first time I heard this soundtrack, I remember giggling like a little school child at the frog noises. And that's all I remember. But behind those ribbits is a pretty cool song. Most of these types of songs stick firmly to the generic egyptian sounds, but this one only uses them for a bit, then builds off of that into a new tune.

1 point - Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion - This song went back and forth between odd and awesome. A few parts were hurt by that extreme echo, almost sounding dissonant, but there were several parts where the echo worked well and totally kicked ass. This wins a point for all those awesome parts.

WEEK 80 Points

Timesplitters 2 (Game Rip) - Training Ground
Very... UN-spectacular. The overall composition isn't horrid, but it doesn't live up to anything. I don't like the instruments used at all, but thats just my own taste. The overall melody is boring, and the drums... the drums were decent, but overshadowed the rest of the song.

Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4)
Decent, definitely a "cliche'd" song. The theme is about just as enjoyable as most other "Egyptian" themes. Mediocre song, but nothing more.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Game Rip) - Staff Credit Game
Certainly fits in a Super Monkey Ball game. The overall feel and theme is fun, and enjoyable. Some of those melodies hidden in there... Seems like I've heard them before... Meh.

Royal Blood - Flame
Hmmm, for some reason I don't have much to say on this song >.> I can't really pin-point the bad parts of the song. But I can't find any good parts either. It seemed like the composer wanted maybe an "epic" touch, but couldn't find the right combination of notes and instruments, hmmm, dunno.

Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion
Interesting song, the title "Illusion" fits it well. Some parts of it are great, some aren't, fun song to listen too.

GunValkyrie Official Soundtrack - Killing bedroom
My reason for nominating this one is kind of random. Lets say it was more of an experiment than an actual nomination. At first I didn't like the repetitive nature, and boring atmosphere. But after listening to it a few times throughout last week, it turned out to not be such a bad song. Still annoyingly redundant, but not enough to force me to rush to the next song on my playlist.

Genocide 2 Master of the Dark Communion (Sharp X68000 Game Rip) - Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly
During the song, I was almost forgot it wasn't a Castlevania tune. Anyways, good song, fun melody and rhythm. Wont steal first place though ;-)

F-Zero Climax (Game Rip) - Illusion
Instantly recognized as an F-Zero song. No question there. I like the beginning, but later it kind of dulled of fatigue, as most F-Zero songs do.

~POINTS~

Killing bedroom 3 pts.

Enter Secretly 2 pt.

Illusion (Y's) 1 pt.

4th: Staff Credit Game
5th: Illusion (F-Zero)
6th: Flame
7th: Ancient Pyramid
8th: Training Ground

I actually started this week thinking my nom. probably wouldn't get a full 3 points from me, but it turned out it did, heheh...

Kolba Dec 14, 2006 10:09 AM

Apologies for omitting 3 tracks from this post. I found them boring, if you must know.

F-Zero Climax - Illusion - there's a lot of energy here, but it kind of goes into nothing. Nothing comes out of it. It's like picking up a speed sneaker on Sonic and blazing through half of the level but ending up running right into a bottomless pit, which means you have to do the whole level again anyway. And you thought it would be fun.

Perfect Collection Ys IV - The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion - Rad. It's like eating pop rocks with your ears. I can't remember the tune or anything else about the track after I've finished listening.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz - Staff Credit Game - A track can change too much. It's like a track is being too eager to please you. 'Do you like what I'm doing now? No? Well it's okay, I can do something else...don't like that either? Well that's not all I can do...'. Sometimes it doesn't give me enough time to answer and I say 'Wait, yes, I did like that bit just then', but it's too late, the track's already doing something entirely different now. As it goes, I only liked two segments of this track, at the beginning and the end. That is better than some of the other tracks this week, which had no good segments at all.

GunValkyrie - Killing Bedroom - I was thinking what to call this, becuase I'm not good at classifying music genres, and electronic is the worst of them with all of its subbranches. But electro-lounge turned out great when someone said that, so I'll go with that. I love these electro-lounge tracks. Although sometimes I like it to do a bit more than it's doing here, maybe have a stronger tune. If it had more of a tune would it stop being lounge? I wouldn't want that, or I wouldn't be able to say 'I love these electro-lounge tracks'.

Ancient Pyramid - There are countless egyptian themed levels in platform games, all with their own egyptian themed sound. But of them all, my favourite egyptian themed piece of Video Game Music is Sandopolis Act 2. Ancient Pyramid is also quite good however. I like the simplicity, I like how it has an intro, after which it pauses to give the signature superfrog croak, and then starts again more excitingly and with a beat. And then the excitement picks up even further for the final part of the track. Throughout, the track never betrays its simplicity, it's just a fun tune, man. This is my nomination and it gets 3 points.

3pts - Ancient Pyramid
2pts - Killing Bedroom
1pt - Staff Credit Game

Djinova Dec 15, 2006 11:39 AM

Great Week, how anyone can dish out 3 Points is beyond me, but here goes:

F-Zero Climax (Game Rip) - Illusion
:edgarrock: :edgarrock: :edgarrock: It's got the right mix of energy and melody. At least I can't say I was bored at any point.

Genocide 2 Master of the Dark Communion (Sharp X68000 Game Rip) - Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly
This one is very similar to the one before. Good percussion, good melody, I can't complain anywhere.

GunValkyrie Official Soundtrack - Killing bedroom
A more ambient track. What I like about tracks like this is the streaming background. Nice, laidback atmosphere. Of course I don't expect any meaningful melody in these tracks.

Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion
Another good track. I primarily like the bright, pointy sound samples. Still the track sounds rather mysterious and wicked too. The nice break in atmosphere at around 2:48 is not less impressive, while the wickedness continues in the background in a more quiet manner.

Royal Blood - Flame
Well, the streak continues with a rather eccentric track. I am not sure why I like this track, but it sounds quite original on many levels. It's like "huh, what is this?"

Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Game Rip) - Staff Credit Game
In terms of variety this wins hard. It's good music, and very joyful. In terms of personal liking I couldn't put it above some others though. Yippon marks the end.

Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4)
An ok track. While it's certainly catchy, expanding the egyptian theme beyond mere atmosphere by adding interesting jumpy sounds, it's generally too high-pitched for me. I am not talking about the the sound quality.

Timesplitters 2 (Game Rip) - Training Ground
Not a bad track, but a military theme always sounds a bit oppressive, monotone, drab and lengthy. I'd put it that way, people are not actively seeking out those kind of track, while they can be interesting in their own confined frame.

Hmm, JUSTICE wants me to use the shotgun again. Ahh, screw justice.

2 Points - Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion

Good stuff all around. This week was an explosive mixture of win. :rr: Well, something like that. I actually just wanted an excuse to use that smilie once.

I suppose the first Illusion, from F-Zero Climax, is standard F-Zero synth rock fare? It's good stuff, although the tune isn't particularly memorable and doesn't really strike me as original. An enjoyable listen, but nothing more.

Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly is decent stuff, too. In some ways, it's similar to Illusion from F-Zero Climax, and in some ways it differs. On the whole, this track also provides for an enjoyable listen but doesn't do too much to wow me.

Heh, when I saw the track title for Killing bedroom, I was expecting something pretty morbid. Interesting that the track actually ends up being "electro-lounge" stuff. I wonder what context it plays in. In any case, the track's alright, albeit a bit on the bland side. It makes for some nice easy listening... But it's one of those tracks that, for me, are much harder to enjoy.

The second Illusion of this week, from Ys IV, was an interesting surprise. I'm a big fan of Falcom's rock tuneage, and seeing Yonemitsu as the composer heightened my expectations for some good old rockin'. This track turns out to be much different than I expected, and frankly it's a little tough for me to enjoy as well. It has some awesome moments (the portion with the spanish guitar near the end makes me melt), but the rest of the track feels a little too unusual for my tastes. Maybe it will grow on me with time, though? :erm:

Flame is interesting too. I enjoy the track for some reason, although I'm not entirely sure why. To be fair, it's a pretty repetitive one (not that this is really a bad thing - the repitition supports this track, I think), and many tracks of similar nature can be found in the wide world of VGM. I'm not sure what it reminds me of, though. It's good stuff, and also one of the most memorable tracks from this week (if only because of how repetitive it is).

Staff Credit Game is easily one of the strongest tracks of this week. It took some getting used to at first - as Kolba mentioned, it seemed like the track was doing too much. Now that I've listened to it a few more times, I have to say that I really enjoy the combination of various melodies. It keeps the song fresh throughout its duration. Awesome nomination. Oh, and that random monkey yelp (?) near the end always startles me or surprises me.

Ancient Pyramid (World 4) is typical Egyptian stuff, but as such it's pretty enjoyable. I've always enjoyed Egyptian/desert themes, and this track isn't an exception. It's a very simple song, but it's also probably the most addictive of this week's batch, and it goes down like butter to boot. Great stuff. I'll probably need to check out more of Brimble's work in the future, too... Looks like his compositions are worth looking into, if they're anything like this track.
Oh, and the frog ribbits are an awesome touch. :)

Training Ground is undoubtedly pretty good at what it does, but these militaristic tunes have never really provided much enjoyment for me. An okay listen, but nothing about it really stands out in this week. Probably my least favorite of the bunch, unfortunately. :(

3 Points ~ Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4)

Thanks, DH. I'll be grabbing that rip sometime soon.

Nomination time.

Artist: Masaharu Iwata
Composer: Not sure... I can't seem to find any information on the composers right now, but this soundtrack was published not too long ago by CAVE. It's probably not a stretch to say that the composers were from CAVE, in any case. Darkcomet72 mentioned a list of composers over at seanne's journal, but since I'm not sure what the source track was for this arrangement, I'm not sure which composer it was.
Album: Pink Sweets Ibara Original Soundtrack
Track Title: Sweets Nerd
Disc Number: 2
Track Number: 10
Catalog Number: CVST-0005
Year: 2006
Additional Information: I figured that Dragon God would probably make a nomination from this awesome album sometime, but since I'm lacking in tracks to nominate, I thought I'd take the initiative and nominate before him! :o

F-Zero Climax (Game Rip) - Illusion
Energetic, invigorating, a good listen. Competent in its field, but it is a long way away from being outstanding.

Genocide 2 Master of the Dark Communion (Sharp X68000 Game Rip) - Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly
May be the first Sharp X68000 nom? Well, the composition sounds so 80's pop that is hilarious. Average and forgettable effort.

GunValkyrie Official Soundtrack - Killing bedroom
This one is much interesting than the previous one, but it was easy. It's pretty good at establishing a laib-back atmosphere, cool wave sound effects. The bad part is the repetitive drum work and the lack of development.

Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion
Odd track to nominate from this album. The electronical approach allows a good number of complex manipulations of the sound, which brings depth and maturity to the arrangement. Awesome manipulation, indeed.

Royal Blood - Flame
It's a pity that isn't reaping much positive comments, I really like it. However, I can understand the underappreciation of this unusual composition, it's hard to get into it. It features gorgeous violin passages, and some other peculiar instruments (maybe asian ones), an incredible instrumental diversity. This piece is impregnated of dramatism and dark figures, it's very intense and dense, overwhelming.

Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Game Rip) - Staff Credit Game
A new nomination from the most successful sotw nominator! It's excellent in the melodic aspect, although the fragmentary condition of this track makes inevitable several cohesive issues.

Superfrog (Amiga Game Rip) - Ancient Pyramid (World 4)
Yeah that eqyptian sound/vibe is overexploited in the gaming scene, therefore it doens't count with the originality factor. Nonetheless, it's good enough to supply its lack of creativity. Addictive and fun.

Timesplitters 2 (Game Rip) - Training Ground
Neither this one is going to pass to the history as the most creative military music. Well, the most curious thing about it, is the incursion of a modern drum set, it's something unexpected.

Point Distribution:
(3 points) Royal Blood - Flame
(2 points) Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion
(1 point) Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Game Rip) - Staff Credit Game

Darkcomet72 Dec 16, 2006 02:36 PM

The Staff Credit Game from Banana Blitz is indeed a medley, one featuring a portion of each of the 10 world themes, though for some odd reason completely lacking anything from the World 3 (Smooth Sherbet) tune.

0:09-0:47 - World 1 Monkey Island
0:47-1:14 - World 9 Sinking Swamp
1:14-1:33 - World 6 Cobalt Caverns
1:33-1:47 - World 2 Jumble Jungle
1:47-1:59 - World 4 Detritus Desert
1:59-2:25 - World 10 Ultra Heaven
2:26-2:51 - World 8 Space Case
2:52-3:17 - World 5 Pirates Ocean
3:17-END - World 7 Volcanic Pools

The intro is the only original part in the entire tune, and besides the instrumentation, there is no melodic hook or anything that could give it coherency. It's still pretty cool, and I gave it a point :)

Also I heard SMBBB's music was remixed from Touch and Roll on the DS, can anyone confirm this.

Wow, this is a very good week with many strong tracks. I actually feel bad not giving the other tracks points. And _DH_ returns with style. Not sure if I'll change my point tally but here goes nothing:

(2 points) Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Game Rip) - Staff Credit Game

(2 points) Perfect Collection Ys IV ~ The Dawn of Ys Volume 3 - Illusion

(1 point) Royal Blood - Flame

(1 point) GunValkyrie Official Soundtrack - Killing bedroom

Genocide was that close to grabbing the last point.

Golfdish from Hell Dec 17, 2006 08:59 AM

Very nice week overall...

3pts - Illusion (Ys IV) - I'm glad to see so many describe this as being "interesting"...It's not my favorite Ys arrange, but nominating any of the synth rock tracks that are my favorite would have garnered too many "generic synth rock" complaints. I love how Yonemitsu handles this one...The melody is understated, but still plenty bad-ass and the acoustic guitar at the end (a Yonemitsu trademark) seals things. One of his best overall arranging jobs.

2pts - Flame - Interesting indeed...Very nice mix of sounds without skimping on the melody.

1 pt - Enter Secretly - Tough call between this, Illusion and Staff Credit Game, but I ultimately went for this for its' overall melody/percussion.

I thought Killing Bedroom sounded a lot like one of the chill-out Megaten tracks...It inherits the strengths (the atmosphere) and weaknesses (too repetitive to really enjoy) of them. Didn't care for Training Ground or Ancient Pyramid.

And to keep my name from disappearing from the queue as fast as it has been, my next nomination:

Track Name: Dungeon Medley
Album: Phantasy Star Sound Collection 1
Disc: 2 of 2
Track: 1
Cat #: RS-1
Composers: Bo, Izuho Takenuchi, Ippo
Arranged by: Takanobu Masuda
Year Released: 1993

And on a side note: Great idea keeping SOTW week open through Sunday. I rarely find time during the week. All of my responses recently have been late Saturday nights during...uh, downtime.

Elorin Dec 17, 2006 09:22 AM

I kind of forgot you nominated the Ys track, Goldfish. Colour me surprised! Certainly would never have expected you to nominate a track like that. It's very nice and beautiful in several spots. Kudos to the guitar at the end, too.

Thanks for the Super Monkey Ball game rip, _DH_. That Monkey Ball track was really great stuff and certainly raised my interest in the game's music significantly.

TheKnightOfNee Dec 17, 2006 01:16 PM

The nomination I made in week 79 never made it into the nomination queue, while all the others from this week are already in there, so I'm gonna repost it.

As ungodly awesome as that medley is, anyone else have a problem with allowing Phantasy Star I arranges?

Heh. It'll happen eventually.

Really great week; one of the best in quite some time. I unfortunately didn't get my votes in. I was having too much fun playing insane games of Wii bowling with the family. :)

Probably would've looked something like this:

Staff Credit Game - 2
Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly - 1
Ancient Frog - 1
Illusion (F-Zero) - 1
Training Ground - 1

That was sweet (and unexpected) when the drum loop came in on Training Ground. I remembered the song from the game, but I didn't remember that happening.

The three that I didn't give points to were good, but I didn't like them as much the 2nd listen. Maybe I was just tired of listening by then; I dunno. :p

They really all could've gotten 1 point. All of them were quality tracks.
