Tetris DS

AAH! I can hardly contain my excitement about this game. It looks like it's shaping up to be the most exciting thing to happen to Tetris since, well, Tetris.

The game now features a whole bunch of different game modes, each of which are presented with the aid of oldschool Nintendo franchises (Mario, Metroid, Zelda, you know the drill). The touch screen adds an extra direct control method, and there are loads of strange puzzle modes to explore, some of which seem very interesting. The game also features 10 player multiplayer (on one cartridge!) and equally exciting WiFi capabilities.

Here are some screenshots, courtesy of IGN:

http://img359.imageshack.us/img359/9...89365kq.th.jpg http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/3...64367zp.th.jpg http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/7...95665ug.th.jpg

I've already preordered the game. I'm a real puzzle game nut and it seems like I'll be playing this one for hours.

wakarukaya Mar 2, 2006 06:47 PM

Seriously... there hasn't been a good tetris out for years.

Infernal Monkey Mar 2, 2006 06:47 PM

This'll probably crush Zoo Keeper as my favorite puzzle game on DS. Donkey Kong will sit on Hitler. The new modes like Push and Catch look pretty rad, and I dig the messy graphical style in the Standard mode. It's almost Wario Ware-ish.

This place has some long ass gameplay videos, and MP3s (which are just ripped straight from the videos but oh well).

WraithTwo Mar 2, 2006 07:09 PM

Argg.... I dunno. Its been so long since I've played Tetris, but I really don't know if it can pull me away from my Meteos addiction or not. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Tetris, but Meteos has devoured countless hours of my life over the last six months.... I'll probably get it sooner or later, but for now I'm only getting one game March 20: Metroid Prime Hunters.

Turbo Mar 2, 2006 07:27 PM

Tetris. what can I say? 10 people playing at once? Over Wifi, being able to see the other opponents boards? Watching as the combos you pull off stick junk blocks on their screens? Laughing in glee the whole time? (unless you just suck at tetris) Another deffinate buy... Man, March is going to kill my wallet.

Neogin Mar 2, 2006 07:46 PM

Looks juicy. Although I sucked at Tetris, I'll willing to have another go at it. You can bet I'll be getting this game.

Borg1982 Mar 2, 2006 08:52 PM

Oh I can't wait. I should pre order.

Magic Mar 3, 2006 01:35 AM

They should be packaging this with DSes and DS Lites like they did with the original Game Boy. Then again, they probably don't need to create any more demand, at least not in Japan.

SunkistTheHedge Mar 3, 2006 04:40 AM

Im gonna be looking forward for this game

KICK FUCKING ASS.

Oh wait, I have no friends. Well, only one with a DS, but that's no fun. What are the WiFi capabilities like? Once the DS picks up and takes WiFi seriously with a larger number of games making good use of it, I may consider it. I don't want it to be another Nintendo item like the Gamecube, which has a single decent game per year which you're expected to play thoroughly until the next decent game is released.

There's too many ways they can easily fuck it up with Tetris; having too many options to play around with is a bad thing. Simple yet addictive modes, plus WiFi multiplayer however, sounds quite interesting.

:tpg: I have the same problem! Well, I know a few people with DSes at school, I don't know how interested they would be in getting owned at Tetris though.

But 1vs1 Tetris is loads of fun. =D

I'm not sure what the plan is with WiFi mode exactly, I haven't really heard much about it. I'm would think it'll work much like Mario Kart DS works, though.

Paco Mar 6, 2006 04:36 AM

Holy shit! If the first shots of Lumines alone were hard-on inspiring, all of these shots just made me bust a nut. :tpg:

FUCK YES! Long live the days when I would connect to 4 friends using the Game Boy 4-Way connector and have endless Tetris free-for-alls!

I just fucking pre-ordered it on Amazon too! :D

SnaKKer_2006 Mar 6, 2006 08:39 AM

This'll be on my 06 to buy list for definate! It will SLAM Zoo keeper to the ground!

Ryunam Mar 6, 2006 08:43 AM

This is a must-buy for me, as well. Tetris is quite the game, and I have the fondest memories of myself flowing through the countless modes of the original, on my archaic yellow-toned Game Boy.

So, nostalgia factor + WiFi functionality = almost an instantaneous purchase. :p

Akai-chan Mar 6, 2006 09:21 AM

I am now lusting for sound effect-less music files... :(

Malmer Mar 8, 2006 01:58 PM

This is a sure buy for me. I've long been intrigued to buy a simple Tetris LCD game - everytime I see it, I just get this natural... Tetris urge.

This game is perfect for me. It's got Tetris aaand modes galore. More than a 50in1-LCD? I think so!
I can see myself playing that stylus mode a lot! Poking bricks till they collapse ='D It'll be great!

Oh noes, Infernal's Tribute to Tetris Thread is gone forever :(

shadowlink56 Mar 8, 2006 05:59 PM

The spread in Nintendo Power about it got me really excited. I can't wait for real Tetris opponents that can't whine that they suck and go crying off, leaving me to only get better in a story mode or some shit.
I love the original Tetris, next would be New Tetris followed by Next Tetris, but the series has lacked innovation since then. Tetris Worlds was just a horrendous packaging of all the previous incarnations.
I'm gonna eat this game up!
*runs to preorder!*

NES Oldskooler Mar 9, 2006 01:19 AM

I actually almost feel guilty for wanting to play this game so much.

I'm sure that more than any other game aside from Capcom franchises, Tetris has had more remakes of it that add almost nothing. The extra gameplay modes seem like cheap gimmicks, but I still really want to play it.

What I'd love (but probably won't happen) is for this game to integrate the elements of The New Tetris on the N64. The main hook for that one was that if you create a 4x4 solid block out of four pieces, it turns into a shiny cube. When cleared, it gives you a line multiplier for the lines that have some of the cube in them. It was a really cool mechanic that I thought totally changed the game.

Even if the extra modes end up sucking, playing 10 players locally is amazing, and the wi-fi is a nice touch as well. Who am I kidding, I'm pretty much sold on it already.

Nintendonomicon Mar 12, 2006 03:05 PM

This game is probably going to become the new drug of the gaming world. I am definitely picking it up.
And let's not forget that New Super Mario Bros will be released around a month and a half after Tetris. This is an awesome time to own a DS.

Freelance Mar 12, 2006 03:28 PM

Arrgh....I wasn't even going to pick up this game, but then I heard there's 10 player modes on one cartridge. It's too bad I don't have any friends here that has a DS though. Oh well, there's always wireless mode. Hmmm, and it's only $39.99, which is cheaper than all other DS games.

Decisions decisions.

Conan-the-3rd Mar 12, 2006 03:57 PM

This is the reasion I'm geting a DS

Simple as that.

I noticed this when looking up more information for this game. Are Bobo and Sass hiding something from us?

I will definitely pick this up.

I can't wait for this.

I'm a Tetris addict. Oh the joy.

Who's gonna play online with me?

Buizel Mar 13, 2006 12:18 AM

I preorder this along with MPH for $34.99 plus tax for both. They ask me to put down $10 for both game to which I cannot do. I have to pay it in full or else I'll spend the rest of the money on other games. @_@

nazpyro Mar 13, 2006 12:21 AM

This game is now on my must-have list. I was hesitant earlier this month, but I just started playing Tetris again when one of my friends when on a classic console eBaying venture. omgasm.

$30 ready to spend.

Freelance Mar 13, 2006 08:12 PM

I just finished viewing pretty much all the gameplay videos on IGN and I must say I am impressed. I normally don't care for all the new gimmicky modes, preferring the old-fashioned Tetris, but these new modes in Tetris DS look very intriguing. Push mode and Catch mode in particular looks to be loads of fun, especially in multiplayer.

This reminds of me of the new gameplay modes in Activision's Shanghai Greatest Moments for the PC. Now that was an awesome game as well.

Malmer Mar 14, 2006 03:00 PM

I'm getting hyped here. Tetris can be played forever, and multiple modes means multiple forevers. Forever!

For those who can withstand the stress, here's the commercial. Neat.

Personally, I had no idea a game called Tetris DS would be a Tetris game. Hard hitting facts! There are internet rumours floating around on the internet about the original Game Boy Tetris being an unlockable, but so far

Acro-nym Mar 19, 2006 11:48 AM

Why, let's remake another game! I'm tired of these games coming out where it's practically the same. So, instead of it just being Tetris, which already works fine on the computer, consoles, and Game Boy systems, it's now Tetris with worldwide multiplayer. I mean, do something different. Like make explosive blocks that detonate after a few rounds and mess with the board a bit. Or create a new-shaped block. Give me something besides enhanced multiplayer and a longer screen.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Mar 19, 2006 11:54 AM

How are you going to make a new shaped block when all the possible combinations are already in use? And worldwide multiplayer is a huge step. Also, read the thread before commenting. There are other changes.

KnowsNothing Mar 19, 2006 11:59 AM

Acro: Oh, you mean like the items? Like the banana peels and lightning bolts and stars and such? Yeah, they're in there. In multiplayer only, though, which is good because I, like everyone else, want single player Tetris to be as pure as possible. People cry when single player tetris is messed around with, and for good reason too. It alway sucks.

Best tetris since... well humm... TetriNET.

And about TetriNet, we should play together. Somehow the 'add line' and 'earthquakes' just add so much frustration to the game

Neogin Mar 19, 2006 01:00 PM

This game is getting mixed reviews. Regardless, I'm planning to get it sometime soon, I missed out on Tetris as a child, considering I was deprived of video games..

Little Shithead Mar 19, 2006 01:33 PM

Who cares about the reviews for the game. It's fucking Tetris.

Anyone who enjoys a Tetris game will pick it up.

I like how you're an idiot and you should stop posting until you can think first.

Have fun playing Tetris in DOS. By yourself. In <640x480. In 256 colors. With annoying beeps-and-bloops from your PC speaker.

(Also, by the rules of Tetris, you can't create a new block shape. Tetris blocks are supposed to have 4 pieces, and 4 pieces ONLY, to form them. Therefore, all the blocks that could be created, and conforming to the conventions of Tetris, are already made.)

Or, to the point, you shouldn't be plying Tetris if you want something totally new and ground breaking. When were you born, 1995.

BlueMikey Mar 19, 2006 02:02 PM

I went over to my parents house the other day and they had the old NES hooked up to their new plasma. And, while they had Dragon Warrior IV in the system, what did they have on top? That's right, Tetris. And not your namby-pamby Nintendo Tetris, but hardcode Tengen Tetris.

At any rate, I will be purchasing this on Tuesday and I'll take on all-comers. I think my productivity is going to massively drop.

(And Hunters, best release date ever.)

shadowlink56 Mar 19, 2006 09:45 PM

All of the ads say this game comes out tomorrow, but I know damn well they don't unload the truck or get the new merch shipments in until Tuesday. Why the tease . . .

Rockgamer Mar 19, 2006 09:57 PM

I plan on getting this game sometime, though I don't know when. If this game had been announced before I bought Meteos, I wouldn't even have got that game. I like it and all, but it pales in comparison to Tetris.

Neogin Mar 19, 2006 10:06 PM

Tetris is that good, huh? Boy, I missed out on my childhood..

Kairyu Mar 19, 2006 10:26 PM

Well I plan on getting this on tuesday or thursday, if its not sold out by then. Aye, I can't wait to take on 9 players at once while listening to old remixed nintendo tunes.

Arbok Mar 19, 2006 11:29 PM

Well I have a good sized plane trip coming up, and this seems like the perfect game to celebrate when mid-terms have also past as well. It will be interesting to see if it manages to be as addicting as Meteos was for me, although I'm not too worried as I loved the original Tetris.

BlueMikey Mar 20, 2006 12:26 AM

It should be noted that the Wifi only goes up to 4 players, while the local goes up to 10.

J-Man Mar 20, 2006 12:55 AM

Nothing will ever compare to Tetris Attack for the SNES.

Ever.

Little Shithead Mar 20, 2006 06:32 AM

In that case, you should hope for a new Pokemon Puzzle game.

Tetris Attack for the Game Boy is certainly not better than TA for the SNES. Mainly because there's no multiplayer. Sure, there's a versus computer mode, but the game is nothing without EPIC BATTLES.

You'd have a stronger case with SNES TA vs. Pokémon Puzzle Challenge for the Game Boy Color, since that has all the single player modes as well as multiplayer. There's also the addition of Garbage Mode, which is a fairly nice way to train. The playing field in PPC is vertically shortened by a row or two though, limiting the length of chains. (I believe the height of the GB TA field is also shortened, but I haven't played it in ages so I don't remember off the top of my head.

Buizel Mar 21, 2006 11:45 PM

I got the game today and it's quiet fun playing Tetris we know and love with additional new twist from Nintendo. The Wi-Fi part is also good though it sucks that it's very limited like in MKDS. Overall it's great.

BTW, I like how Nintendo stated in the booklet on not to give out any personal info while playing online when there's no way to communicate whatsoever.

Man I have trouble. I just got the game today and played a bit in single player and it was so damn rad! I never thought I'd see the day when I enjoyed remixed music.

Anyway, the main reason why I got it was to play online, and I CAN'T CONNECT TO MY OWN NETWORK OR ANYONE ELSES!!!! It worked before when I played AC, but now I can't even connect to that. I'm sitting at a PC with a scanner, printer, cordless phone and a non-cordless phone nearby though. Are any of them interfering with my connection? I did disconnect the cordless phone, but it still didn't work :( The last time I played online was at my old apartment. Maybe my new location is incompatible or something...

BlueMikey Mar 22, 2006 09:40 PM

When I was having connection troubles, the Nintendo WiFi forums were incredibly helpful (you just have to wade a bit through the spam). I actually ended up sending my DS back to Nintendo because the wireless on my DS was completely busted. They sent it back to me fixed.

This version of Tetris so far has been the most fun I've had with a Tetris game since TetrisDX on the GBC. All of the modes have a certain appeal, and the presentation is just amazing. I can see myself keeping this one around for a long time to come.

Freelance Mar 23, 2006 06:02 PM

I played the game when I went to work and when I came home from work, so I had plenty of time to check out all the modes available. Here are my opinions for each:

1. STANDARD - Is it just me, or does the speed start increasing way too soon? The only other Tetris game I've played was the one on the GB, and while the speed in level 10 was definitely increased, it certainly wasn't as fast as the speed in Tetris DS. Then when you get to higher levels, it becomes impossibly fast, and I had to resort to the infinite rotation trick just to survive, and even then, I still had major trouble. Am I the only one who thinks so?

2. PUSH - I LOVE PUSH. It's simply the best mode in the game, and the DK motif is a big plus too. Push is fast, frantic, and can last a pretty long time as it's easy to tip the balance at any point in the game. It should be even more fun in multiplayer!

3. TOUCH - Meh, I didn't think much of this mode. For some reason sliding pieces doesn't appeal to me, and I don't like the slow pace.

4. CATCH - I was looking forward to this mode when I saw gameplay videos, and while it's fun, it's not as awesome as I thought it'd be. It wasn't until I was playing for a while when I realized I could speed up the speed of the falling pieces XD I was going there thinking, "Oh geez, the blocks move way too slow. This isn't fun." Well I'm glad I learned something new.

5. MISSION - I didn't think I'd like this mode much, but to my surprise, it's a lot more fun than I thought. I hate the missions where you have to clear the red line, though, 'cause I keep subconsciously clearing lines far below the line, making it take longer to complete the mission!

6. PUZZLE - A fun little diversion to pass the time. I like it more than Touch.

I used to be horribly addicted to Tetris back in the day, and eventually it became very boring to me. However, I was horribly mistaken. With the new modes included in Tetris DS, it looks like Tetris still has a lot of staying power left!. My other favourite puzzle games are Dr. Mario and Pokémon Puzzle League/Challenge.

Does nobody wish to play with me? :(

I beat it the first time I played it. The key is the 'landed piece rotation trick', where you can virtually keep flipping a piece until YOU tell it to be placed. Then you have a split second to look. I was surprised it got so fast so quick, but it isn't so hard.

Many more tense gaming nights are coming for me based on this mode! INTENSE!

I agree. Very innovative, but I was expecting it to get more exciting. Driving the gather block is also a bit cumbersome.

I like that it's built around Yoshi's Cookie. When I first played it, I was like, "Oh man, they remade YC and they made the blocks microscopic! How am I ever going to distinguish these colors!" Then I noticed the blocks at the bottom. Whew!

I have a Tetris game (and often more than one) for every console I own. It's always been a staple purchase fo me, but I watch TDS closely because I was somewhat disappointed by Tetris Worlds. The music was sub-par, the multiplayer was too small, and I didn't like the premsie. TDS is a return to the Tetris greatness I've been craving!

Nintendo64's New Tetris made me play like that! Honest! I could not even compete with my friends if I didn't learn to play fast.

Oh yeah, that lightning bolt. When I was first hit by it I thought my control pad broke ._.
What a crazy item.

Anyway, I'll have to look for the rest of you tetris heads on irc, hehe.

Point taken. That's why I turned Hard Drop back on after we stopp playing so I can compete more efficently as well. Hehehe, I did win some games later on against the guys I mentioned above.

Quite. This game is so much fun against other people!!

Update: NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! I lost Standard mode at 198 lines!! *SOB!*
I heard that if you win with 200 lines, you unlock Endless mode where there are no goals. Man, this sucks. Well I'm off to try again XD

P.S. Okay, I'm stumped at the themes shown at level 17 and above. I've never seen those before. What games are they from? I recognize Duck Hunt, and Excitebike, but everything else are quite foreign to me. I have a feeling that the one on level 17 may be Clu Clu Land.

P.P.S. I DID IT!!! I won Standard!! It took me several more tries to get it, and I did use the rotation trick a lot to plan my next moves from the next 6 pieces. When I started getting close to 200 though, I was panicking and my screen was starting to pile up to the top...but I hung in there and I won! Cute credits! :3

Compared to Tetris DX, it sure does get a lot faster much earlier. I kind of like that though because I felt that Tetris DX dragged on after awhile where I would get up to the super fast speeds but then lose, and go all the way back down. And yes I realize I could've started out a faster speed, but I guess I'm just strange in that I always like to start back at the begining.

Quote:

3. TOUCH - Meh, I didn't think much of this mode. For some reason sliding pieces doesn't appeal to me, and I don't like the slow pace.
I like this mode for warming myself up if I've just started playing the game. I usually play it at least once before I decide whether to play another round, or change modes. I like it's slower pace overall for playing in the mornings when I'm not entirely awake yet.

Quote:

This is currently one of my favorite modes to play! :) Granted I haven't played Push yet, but I just love the Metroid theme and reverse logic behind this mode. So much fun.

I played Tetris on my Gameboy back in the day. Memories, mmm. I haven't played a Tetris game since then, excluding my calculator. The infinite spin thing was a bit odd for me when I started, but when I got around level 9 in Marathon, I realized how helpful it is.

I've gotten up to level 13, I believe. I sure hope I can grab a Wifi Connector, so I can finally play all the online titles out there.

*goes back to Push Mode*

TetriNET is broken, dude. The last time I was on people were spelling "FUCK YOU" with their tetris blocks. Needless to say, there's hacks and crap out there where you can't lose, or you can wipe your entire column. It really sucks.

But yeah, TetriNET was awesome. I remember playing that with a bunch of people and they were basically letting me win. Still, it was quite fun. I'd just like to say that I hope Tetris DS isn't exactly one of those games that you'll be playing mostly online - I'd like it if you'd keep coming back for single player, not just the online capabilities.

Turbo Mar 28, 2006 02:44 AM

Of course. Online you can only do 2 modes pretty much. Single player has like.. 8. All different and each one addicting in its own way. You'll deffinatly go back to single player.

shadowlink56 Mar 28, 2006 03:39 PM

I was playing online the other night and was surprised and sickened that people had already reached 160 wins with the game not even being out a week.
I played for like 3 hours and got 25 4-player wins, 10 2-player wins, and 10 Push mode wins.
One guy I played had 160 2-player wins. The funny part was that his score (which starts at 5000 for those that aren't on yet) was only at 6233. For each win, you get points based on the skill level of the players you beat. He must have lost a ton of Push Modes (which seem to deplete your score faster if you lose) or something to have such a disproportionate win to score ratio. This also means that he has WAY more than 160 games under his belt.
With only three ways to play, wouldn't you just burn yourself out on the wifi after playing that long?
Anyway, I guess what it boils down to is I think the guy's nuts and though I'd like his win record, I'd only want it after about a month or so of playing!

I also beat a guy named Be Afraid that had a very high score and win total during one of my first matches in 4-player mode. I felt pretty good.
Finally all of that New Tetris playing is paying off!

How hard is single player? I know multiplayer would vary depending on who you're playing against, but I don't want some bullshit insane difficulty level like Chu Chu Rocket had.

Yeah, I thought Chu Chu Rocket was hard. I'm not much of a puzzle fan. But is tetris, and everyone knows how to play tetris. I have the PS1 version of Tetris Plus and it was quite nice. If it's anything like Plus I'll be pleased indefinitely.

It's a challenge, but in no way is it too difficult. Besides, if a certain mode bugs you and gets you frustrated then switch over to a more relaxing mode like Touch or Puzzle.
Hardest part of the game IMO: Level 5 Push vs CPU. Yikes, the CPU is FAST!
Still, it's not like you HAVE to beat it. There isn't really any crazy unlockables or bonuses. Just the 200 lines in standard (beating level 20) unlocks endless mode and a sound test (which I found pointless now that I ripped the game).
Consequently, I got up to level 56 in endless, and don't plan to try again. Once you reach your favorite number what would your next goal be? It gets pretty repetitive after a while anyway. It really can't get much faster.
I beat most of puzzle mode with no real benefit as well, except that it was fun.
The game is a nice break for me. I don't feel like I have to complete everything to prove that I'm good. I just let multiplayer tell that story . . .

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Mar 28, 2006 04:29 PM

I honestly don't know how you guys get like level 50+. My best is somewhere around 25, but even there I was having a ton of trouble. I mean, the blocks fall into place basically instantly at that point. What's the trick I'm missing here?

Buizel Mar 28, 2006 05:30 PM

LOL. I don't know how I got myself to level 50+. I was just actually killing time yesterday. I lost and see that I reached to level 54. XD

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Mar 28, 2006 05:51 PM

I get stuck with them all falling down so damn fast. There has to be a trick.

Turbo Mar 28, 2006 08:19 PM

Infinite block rotation. Keep button mashing A and the block wont stick where it landed. Should give you enough time to look at the preview block and figure out what you're going to do.

Borg1982 Mar 28, 2006 08:53 PM

Is anyone good at beating LEVEL 5 in "VS CPU" battle mode?

I haven't beat that one yet.

Elixir Mar 28, 2006 09:44 PM

Hahaha is that trick still around? I remember seeing people use that trick in puyo puyo like this, to let the next block roll around to something you'd want. Not sure if Tetris DS rolls over it's queued bricks, but puyo sure did, and that's why there's insane videos out there.

I guess it's virtually impossible to play Tetris DS without that trick, heh.

It gets awfully fast too quickly IMO. They're a blur arounf Level 15, so there's no real change between 15 and . . . x. So, after that, it's all practice (which I have via playing multiple iterations of Tetris) and control.
Watch your hold piece, make sure you know what you have because in a pinch you'll need to keep flipping a piece to see where you are, and swap out pieces if necessary.
Try to stay clean and low when things get fast. Don't worry about points or large line clears.

surasshu Apr 1, 2006 08:18 PM

I just got the game in, but I don't know what you lads are talking about. I beat marathon mode the second or third try, and I'm hardly what you would call a talented Tetris player.

Anyway, the first thing I did was turn off ghost blocks. That just destroys the game. The only disadvantage is the block doesn't appear at the top of the screen, but it appears ABOVE the screen. Once the game speeds up that isn't much of an issue, though.

Anyway... God I love Tetris. Catch is a pretty good alternative, and I love Mission. But I think I'll mostly be playing Marathon on Endless. <3

nazpyro Apr 2, 2006 07:55 PM

Whew. The game came in yesterday, but I just picked it up now because of my weekend's ridiculous fesitvities. Yeah, I just beat marathon mode in my first try. Now to try other modes. And online later.

Got Metroid Prime: Hunters too. This will be a great week for gaming.

Which mode is the one last shown in this video? I think I'm sold on that alone.

shadowlink56 Apr 2, 2006 11:13 PM

That's catch mode. Looks pretty cool, huh? It gets pretty tough. Still, I think I play it the least . . .

nazpyro Apr 3, 2006 02:17 PM

Yeah, I've only played Catch mode once in the 16 hours I have owned the game. The controls were somewhat frustrating, and it was kind of boring. I'll try it again soon. Funny how I've done everything in the game already (got Endless to Level 73, wtf) plus a bunch of online games. Just working on puzzles now.

Level 5 computers are tough, but I've been beating them 1 of about every 3 games. Make that 1 of 5 for Push, which is most definitely my favorite new mode.

So, how is this game holding up? I've been thinking of renting and downloading Tetris Worlds, to my xbox. Since, you know, it'd save money, it's only $7 for a rental, and I have it for life.

Then again, I would like to expand my GA/DS library and concentrate on them. What's the guts of this game, is it one where you're going to focus on a single mode, or are you going to jump around alot? Better then Tetris Worlds? Variety? Value for money? GAMINGFORCE DECIDES MY PURCHASES.

Radical Apr 5, 2006 12:33 AM

Gamingforce decides my purchase as well. I'm trying to decide between Oblivion, this, and the next Mario game on DS. I know that they're all quite different from one another, but I've been playing a lot of RPGs lately and I'm feeling like something different. I'll probably get Mario and Oblivion some time, so the question is should get get Tetris before I get the other two, or should I get it at all?

nazpyro Apr 5, 2006 12:36 AM

Ah, so you want opinions... here's mine:

I got Tetris DS, Metroid Prime: Hunters, and Kingdom Hearts II at basically the same time. I've played Metroid Prime: Hunters and Kingdom Hearts II a bit, but I find myself always coming back to play Tetris. I'm biased because I like the game. I also feel that it's really just a Tetris addiction right now that I'm high on, so I can't stop playing it. Playing online has been really fun. With the new modes, you're bound to find a at least one new one you like (I can't compare to Tetris Worlds since I've never played that). I would say the retail value of $35 is a bit much for it, but whatever. I think some places sell it for $30, even cheaper used/on eBay. I would say it's a must-have for DS though.

BlueMikey Apr 5, 2006 01:02 AM

Yeah, I got my copy for $30 at Target. And who knows, maybe you can find it for $25 somewhere in the next couple weeks (after all, I just got a $40 KH2 at Circuit City).

In single mode, I probably play the four modes that you can't play online (Puzzle, Catch, Mission, Touch) equally. You can play Push and Standard online, and once you get in the swing of doing that, it's just not the same playing alone (although the level 5 computer on Push is 10 times harder than anyone you'll play online). Push is really where it's at for me. I absolutely love playing that online. I might be more addicted to 4-player Standard, but it is tons easier to find a Push game.

To be honest, I think New Super Mario Bros. will be the most satisfying game of this string of awsome games that have been released, but I can't imagine having this DS without Tetris on it. It's fantastic.

wakarukaya Apr 5, 2006 07:53 PM

Push mode is definitely the most fun part of the game for me. Sheesh... took me about 4-5 tries to beat level 5 push. Its insanely fast at first, but I think it slows down a bit. The first thing you need to do is try and mess up his territory in the beginning. The strange thing is that you share territory, so if you set up for a tetris, they potentially have the same thing. If you're in a position where you can't make a tetris because it'll fall through, just use L blocks or S or Z blocks.

Puzzle mode took like 8 hours to complete. Some puzzles took like 2 seconds, others took a good half an hour. My advice is that if you find yourself taking more that 5 minutes, go back to it later.

Standard mode is pretty freaking ridiculous. Its the fastest tetris I've ever played. I sorta lost interest in it and tried the other stuff. I'll finish the other stuff first.

I haven't played online yet... It just doesn't seem right to until I get better at standard.

Catch mode and touch mode I really haven't gotten the hang of at all yet.

Anyone have strats they wanna share?

Tetris Worlds was a disappointment to me. Tetris DS has modes I will play forever.
Also, for all of those saying they play MP:H or KH2 more than this, this game is MUCH more condusive to pick-up-and-play than the others. You've got to have some time set aside for MP:H and KH2, whereas you can be in and done with Tetris in under 5 minutes.
It's like gaming porn! KH2 and MP:H need a lot of foreplay, but Tetris you're in and out!

NES Oldskooler Apr 6, 2006 02:05 AM

I'm kind of "meh" on Tetris, actually.

I'm happy that a guy in my class got it, since we can all just leech the download play off of him. But after playing it, I'm not so sure I'd want to own it. Tetris was THE game for the original Game Boy, but there are so many better games for the DS. The gameplay feels very stiff in my opinion, and not at all like how The New Tetris (on the 64) refined it.

That's not to say that it's bad, but I probably won't get the game until I've got some cash to spare. I'd think of it in the same way as Megaman Powered Up on PSP: a remake with a lot of added content, but since the original game is so old and overdone, I wouldn't call it essential.

Tetris Worlds would cost $3 in petrol, $7 to rent. 10 minutes to download, and I have it forever. Is Tetris DS really worth the price, or is it one of those games like Electroplankton where you should hold off until it drops in price?

Sadly, I feel that tetris online is more based on luck since you well...have to hope you get the right pieces in the right order to even come remotely close to winning.

I haven't really played enough online classic mode to really say this but...
Doesn't each player start with the same order of blocks? The only variables to affect this is how the player uses the pieces and maybe the items screwing up the order. Maybe.

At least on the NES/GB version I doubt Tetris has anything to do with luck. In my opinion, it has more to do with a person's critical-thinking ability than luck.

Nope. I think that's actually better than having each person get the same order of blocks. It makes you think more about where to set up your stuff, and the opponent can't cheat and see what you're doing.

wakarukaya Apr 6, 2006 09:18 PM

Hmm, I finally understand how to beat lvl 5 push now. Basically, you need to create distance from the computer, since it's insanely fast. If you get the the point where you share territory, chances are... it's gonna win. Set up 2-3 lines of filler blocks to slow the computer down and try to make a tetris. Sometimes, the computer seems more interested in trying to get into your area than making a tetris, allowing you to take the win.

But is it in the same order on the DS version? I really got to get back into that game mode, I'm playing way too much catch and push modes. And then there's my recent purchase of Jump Super Stars >.>

Anywho, you're right about the opponent copying your movements if that were the case. But in a way you gain a advantage if the opponent does that. If you're the quick type they'll automatically screw up as you hard drop nearly all the pieces. From what I can tell its pretty hard to keep track of two (or more) screens at once and then doing the same with your screen =p.

Unless he or she has photographic memory. :(

nazpyro Apr 6, 2006 09:25 PM

Nah, you don't get the same sequence of blocks. if I correctly understand what you're saying. I'm pretty good at the 4-player mode. The few times I lose, it's always because I got lightning bolted (locked) + mushroomed (sped up) and everyone's tetris's just happened to hit me at the same time. Morose mother fuckers.

As for that Lvl 5 Push strategy, yeah. I do that too. Generally, I can out-Tetris anyone, including that level 5 computer, so once I put some garbage layers, it's easy going.

wakarukaya Apr 7, 2006 12:32 AM

Yep... push is fun. I sorta can't get used to standard though.
The thing thats really hard for me is level 5 standard against the CPU. I know I can't out tetris it really. All I can do is hope that the computer just sets me up for 3 tetrises so that I can end it quickly.

Anyone ever play pure in Tetrinet? Full matches with good people (6 people total) would last 10-15 seconds.... I build way slower on the DS though, especially since i'm not used to pressing up for hard drop.

nazpyro Apr 8, 2006 11:50 PM

Hot. I finally got passed the 7000 rating mark on WFC. Good stuff. My earlier attempt was stopped at 6996, and then a loss knocked me down to 6684. Hopefully I can stay above this number now.

wakarukaya Apr 9, 2006 06:57 PM

I played against TGM-ARIKA online. Holy crap he kicked my ass. I was able to hold him off for about 5 minutes, but he's so freaking relentless. There's also the distinct possiblity that s/he was toying with me.

I've also hit the glitch in Push where I clearly win but it gives me a Lose, and my rating goes down. It pisses me off. This has happened a couple times already.

BlueMikey Apr 10, 2006 08:30 PM

Huh, I've never gotten that Push glitch.

I've been wondering lately what happens in Push if you clear all the blocks.

wakarukaya Apr 11, 2006 03:47 AM

I'm assuming thats what they show in that link i just posted... blocks just fall continuously I guess.

I've been practicing that tspin back to back thing... Its hard to pull off, but it totally rocks. With 3 T pieces, you can pretty much kill people instantly if you set up your field correctly...
