Oh my god. Charles Deenan is so much <3
3 points: FACTORY BEAT 2 points: Vergil Battle 2 1 point: Bomb Factory Not too fond of this week, and the point distribution was easy as hell. Some might be surprised to find me voting for Bomb Factory, and it's true, the song has no musical merit whatsoever. If this is what Jack Wall sounds like, then the man is a hack. Still, there's something really awesome about the Bass and Clarinet parts right at 1:29-1:42, and that's more than I can say for the rest of the songs. |
Meh week...Not as bad as it COULD have been, considering two of my least favorite musical franchises are represented, but the Myst track was borderline respectable and the CvS track wasn't anywhere near as bad as the rest of the soundtrack. Still, picking winners was almost too easy...
3 Pts - Plok Main Theme 2 Pts - Vergil Battle 2 1 Pts - Megalomania Plok was the livliest of the bunch and kind of refreshing. Vergil is some smooth technostra-rock (yes, I made that up) that I like. And Megalomania is...well, Megalomania. I think I can readily hear similarities to Shimomura's Legend of Mana battle tracks in there. |
Capcom VS. SNK Millenium Fight 2000 Original Soundtrack - Bonus Track 2 this sort of Street Fighter tuneage that keeps popping up like a bad penny has never done much for me. This track is a fairly meh jazz/lounge piece that takes far too long to get rolling, and goes nowhere once it's started.
Devil May Cry 3 Original Soundtrack - Vergil Battle 2 The nominator was right; this isn't too similar to the Vergil Battles that popped up in the BSC. It's missing much the gothic grandeaur I liked about its sibling songs, although there is a nice, if understated, choral section. The electric guitar loopery that comprised the main body of the track was less appealing, though. Genso Sangokushi II Original Sound Track - Tong Guan Waterway - Rain on the Mountain Not a bad piece of atmosphere. A little repetitive for my taste, but attractively presented with a nice melody. LIVE A LIVE Original Sound Version - MEGALOMANIA Definitely a piece that was influential in Shimomura's career, with a clear kinship to some of her later work. That said, it's missing a crucial piece--the melody! It's as if that part was neatly lifted out and disposed with, leaving watered-down backing to do its stuff. And from a strong melodist like Shimomura, I find that disappointing. Myst IV Revelation (PC Game Rip) - Bomb Factory I've always had a soft spot for Myst music, though it never seems to get any respect in the BSC or elsewhere. This track's a little more percussive and quirky than some of the series' more ambient and/or ethereal fare, but is still reasonably interesting. Plok! (SNES Game Rip) - Main Theme Infectious. I can't resist a finely tuned harmonica, or a well-turned folksy rhythm. This piece is bouncy and fun--just the thing this week needs. Could we have a winner? pop'n music Inst Best - DRAGON DANCE revision-2 More percussive quirkiness--I suppose "poppin" might be an apt descriptor. There's some potential there, methinks, but it could have been developed better. And that middle section? Positively whiny. The Lost Vikings (SNES Game Rip) - Factory Beat Some cute chantish stuff in this piece, combined with a jazzy backbeat and some decent synthiness. Didn't blow me away (after several good weeks, I started to feel entitled to this), but good. A pretty "meh" lot overall, but that just makes point allocation all the easier. The Point Spread Plok! - 3 pts. Genso Sangokushi - 2 pts. Lost Vikings - 1 pt. --+Nomination+-- Title: Strange Encounter Album: Rudra no Hihou OSV Artist: Ryuji Sasai Track: 27 Year: 1996 Notes: I will upload my personal version of this song, since the OST version doesn't loop, and I would, well, prefer a looped song. |
Kind of boring week, I have to say... I like how on even really boring days, everyone has completely different ideas on what represents the "best" of boring tracks =)
I'll post my rationale later: 2 pts to Vergil Battle 2, Bomb Factory, and Tong Guan Waterway |
Heh, I seem to be becoming something of an anti-conformist where SotW is concerned. I actually thought this week was far from boring... in fact, I'll go so far as to say that if any of these songs had been nominated in one of the previous two weeks, they would have received at least a point or two from me.
Capcom VS. SNK Millenium Fight 2000 Original Soundtrack - Bonus Track 2 - 50 seconds is a long time to wait for a song to get moving, and the sections of melody that I enjoyed were too brief. Those little sections are enough to boost my opinion of the song, however. If it had just been a little more focused... Devil May Cry 3 Original Soundtrack - Vergil Battle 2 - Pretty entertaining (if not breathtaking), for the first third of the song... after that it begins to wear a little thin. Still, other than the exaggerated length, no glaring flaws; bass, rhythm, melody, are all well implemented. Genso Sangokushi II Original Sound Track - Tong Guan Waterway - Rain on the Mountain - A pretty little song that catches my attention. The simplicity of the song itself makes it appealing. I have no real complaints. LIVE A LIVE Original Sound Version - MEGALOMANIA - I liked it a lot. It doesn't really have a fault... other than it could use something to make it stand out more. I enjoyed the instruments used, and the nice concise length. Myst IV Revelation (PC Game Rip) - Bomb Factory - Hmmm... the percussion used here is fairly impressive. Subtle enough not to be distracting, it nevertheless comprises a driving force of the song. It doesn't quite manage to become really impressive, but certainly enjoyable. Somewhat borderline, for me. Plok! (SNES Game Rip) - Main Theme - My nom, and quite a nostalgic tune; I liked the song enough that I'd just turn on my snes and listen to it loop for a while. The harmonica is particularly striking, the melody memorable... overall, it's something that represents the high points of the snes era. It's quite fascinating what Follin was able to do with a mere eight channels. pop'n music Inst Best - DRAGON DANCE revision-2 Very, very nice things going until about 1:30... the instrument implemented at that point is admittedly bad. Well, maybe more than just bad. Regardless, this song is quality - the overall effect of the melody/counter melodies and rhythm is very nice. Too bad for that one bad instrument - without that, I would have honestly given it 3 points, even above my own nom. The Lost Vikings (SNES Game Rip) - Factory Beat - I never really considered the music of Lost Vikings to be good enough for nomination, but if I had to pick one, it would probably be this. The mechanical whirrings and clickings used occasionally for percussion, the above-par voice samples, and interesting melody pull this song above the level of mediocrity... but that's not quite enough to earn it a point. ~*Point Distribution*~ 3 points - Plok! I'm back too. For how long? Who knows. Here's my nomination:
Track Title: Staff Credit Game Album: Super Monkey Ball Banana Blitz (Wii gamerip) Year: 2006 Will upload shortly. |
Alright, my first week in this, lets see what I spit out.
Capcom-although it's mostly boring, it has a nice, smooth feel to it that reminds me of Command and Conquer: Renegade (of which I love). Unfortunately, the melody goes nowhere fast and feels like wasted potential. Devil May Cry-With a nice beat and a great choice of instruments, it felt like a good track, until the uninspired themes came in and blew it. Another miss. Genso-Too perky to let itself not move forward. If it was a progressive song, it might have stood a chance. Live A Live-Possibly my favorite this week, it's perky and catchy, but not annoying-like-Spice Girls kind of thing. The bass was very well developed, as well. Myst-Atmospheric and not at all intended for single listening. Plok-XD in music form. My runner up, it holds nice, jolly tones while pulling off a cheesy-on-purpose set. Perhaps being too happy dragged it down. Dragon Dance-The sequel to Myst's song. It just isn't made for a soundtrack, it's made for a game. Factory Beat-Closing in on full out hilarious, it gets third just for mimicing 90's rap style in SNES terms. Live a Live-3 points Plok-2 Points Factory Beat-1 point Nice. I'm doing this till I die. Nomination: Title: Training Ground Album: Timesplitters 2 (Ripped) Artist: Graeme Norgate Year: 2001/2002 Source: http://www.tsmusicbox.com/ Notes: Love this track, it's cowboy epic in an awesome way. Not a fan of the trumpet, but the rest more thasn makes up for it. Song link (if I need it): http://www.uploading.com/files/79K93...round.mp3.html |

A mediocre week. A lot of the nominations felt rather bland. I'm just gonna dole out points, since my criticisms of everything else are pretty much the same, and I don't feel like typing it all out each time.

Man, what is it with this week and people coming back out of nowhere?
Not that I'm complaining, of course. :D |
From what I remember, last week got quite a few positive comments on it. It was mostly middle of the road quality for me. Figures this week gets branded as mediocre. I want to hug it and pet it and call it George.
I mean, this week, it's good. Really good. I'd rank it among the best we've had. Sup guys =p
Capcom VS. SNK Millenium Fight 2000 Original Soundtrack - Bonus Track 2 This is really the kind of tracks that does nothing to me. I'm not too big on electro already, but this kind of ambient lounge stuff really leaves me cold. =/ Devil May Cry 3 Original Soundtrack - Vergil Battle 2 This could have been great if it hasnt been drown in it's technoish stoner basis. Takes away all the porwerful, to me. Genso Sangokushi II Original Sound Track - Tong Guan Waterway - Rain on the Mountain There was a single track I truly liked on Genso 2, and it wasnt that one. It's pretty representative of the boredom that is this OST, in my opinion. =s LIVE A LIVE Original Sound Version - MEGALOMANIA Wouldnt have chosen that one from that game, but it's still a cool track. Reminds me I should play that game again. Plok! (SNES Game Rip) - Main Theme Amazing sound quality and samples for a SNES track, but it's Follin so heh. The melody itself aint anything great, but the technical prowess is still here. pop'n music Inst Best - DRAGON DANCE revision-2 Oh God some psyche electro again ... Not too bad as this one actually delivers some atmosphere, but meh ... The Lost Vikings (SNES Game Rip) - Factory Beat After I found out Deneen composed the music for the old LOTR game, I tried to listen to his other work. Lost Vikings was one of the disapointment I had. GB2 Kriss Kross or something ... =/ 3 points: LIVE A LIVE Original Sound Version - MEGALOMANIA 2 points: Plok! (SNES Game Rip) - Main Theme 1 point: pop'n music Inst Best - DRAGON DANCE revision-2 Sorry for being so harsh on my first time actually participating, but i read it was a bad week anyway ... ^_^; Nomination: Title: Stage 3-2 - Enter Secretly Game: Genocide 2 (X68K Game Recording) Artist: Geya Hideyuki, Naoyuki Kimura >> Download I was so frustrated I couldnt nominate it for Best Chiptune because of the MIDI percussion that I'm nominating it here. BEHOLD, one of my most cherished obscure gems ~ XD |
SOTW gets some life this week, a rather "subjective" week.
Capcom VS. SNK Millenium Fight 2000 Original Soundtrack - Bonus Track 2 A fine listen while it lasted. I just find it hard to memorize it when it's done. Maybe some parts are a bit too quiet. Devil May Cry 3 Original Soundtrack - Vergil Battle 2 Another memory problem here. I got quite some action and some parts are well-done, yet it is still mehblah. If I were to pick faulty parts, I couldn't though. Genso Sangokushi II Original Sound Track - Tong Guan Waterway - Rain on the Mountain It's a bit plain and simplistic, but not without purpose. There were some nice rhythm and "drop" effects. But I can see how this could be total boringness to others. LIVE A LIVE Original Sound Version - MEGALOMANIA Like with this case. I have heard this one before. The only track from this week I can honestly say I didn't like at all, EVER. It's so megalomanic, I guess. Myst IV Revelation (PC Game Rip) - Bomb Factory From now on, the good stack continues. For some reason it's the same music and all, but this one sounds quite deep at some parts (1:20++). While not setting a remarkable end it drags itself out not without dignity. Plok! (SNES Game Rip) - Main Theme I like this track moderately, it was never boring. It's hard to pinpoint the details, but the sound palette could be more diverse. Perhaps more "round", "bubbly" sounds. pop'n music Inst Best - DRAGON DANCE revision-2 What I probably like best about this track are the sound samples. Not something you hear frequently. There were some nice distortions around the melody + some background streaming. The short poignant sounds created an interestin contrast as well. ok. The Lost Vikings (SNES Game Rip) - Factory Beat Another good track for the end. I actually remember playing this game, one of the few ones I borrowed from the library. I think the musical style fits perfectly to the game. The music is like "walkin' everywhere I want, smashin' everythin' I like", so was the game. Point Spread: 2 Points - Genso Sangokushi II Original Sound Track - Tong Guan Waterway - Rain on the Mountain 2 Points - pop'n music Inst Best - DRAGON DANCE revision-2 1 Point - The Occasionally Limbless Guy 1 Point - Mobbing Music |
Except for a few tracks, this week is quite good actually.
I'm giving the preference to one of my favorite 16-bit tunes ever, one which I was also thinking about nominating in a future SotW. Deenan is the absolute win for me this week. On the other hand, Plok! is looking to be this week's winner, its western folk style is hardly anything I can enjoy listening to. - Point Spread - 2 points: The Lost Vikings (SNES Game Rip) - Factory Beat 1 point: Devil May Cry 3 Original Soundtrack - Vergil Battle 2 1 point: LIVE A LIVE Original Sound Version - MEGALOMANIA 1 point: Myst IV Revelation (PC Game Rip) - Bomb Factory 1 point: pop'n music Inst Best - DRAGON DANCE revision-2 |
Of all the Plok songs to place, why Main Theme? I could never get into it at all.

-Nomination Change- Can't be helped I suppose. I completely overlooked this song, and it's far more deserving than the other nomination I put up. Sorry for the trouble - there won't be any more changes (this week anyway, heh.) Album: Phantom Kingdom Arrange Album Title: JOKER Track: 03 Artist: Takayuki Aihara, Ryo Sakai Year: 2005 Catalog Number: SCDC-00434 Source: http://www.gmronline.com/info.asp?CatNumber=SCDC-00434 |
This week's batch was a mixed bag for me. There were a few tracks that were quite nifty, and others that were okay. Nothing appalling though, of course. On to the comments, in any case...
I feel like Bonus Track 2 has a few good moments, but on the whole it tends to meander unnecessarily more often than it pleases my ears. Not bad, but not too good either. It's quite unmemorable, too. Heh, the sound of Vergil Battle 2 sounds like an arrangement of a theme from Devil May Cry 3. I'm assuming it's the main theme (correct me if I'm wrong), as I recall hearing it in a few trailers a couple of years ago. I don't particularly care that much for the majority of this track, but the sprinkling of that nifty melody here and there makes it worth the listen. Ton Guan Waterway is a simple track, but I found it very enjoyable for what it was. It features one of the more memorable melodies of this week, too. Would be nice if it was a little longer, but I guess the short but sweet duration works well enough. I can't really get into MEGALOMANIA, even though I feel like I should. Heck, it sounds like it should be infectious enough, but it's just not clicking with me. Like orion mentioned in his comment, I often expect Shimomura to come up with some really strong melodies. MEGALOMANIA isn't unenjoyable, but rather underwhelming in comparison to other tracks of hers. There's just not much about this track that makes me want to listen to it again. Bomb Factory is pretty awesome atmospheric stuff. It seems to set a grim mood really effectively (although it develops into something more, later), and that's something that I appreciate a lot. The sounds feel beautifully antiquated, as if the music plays in some mysterious ruins. I dig the progression of the melody, too. Gotta love the harmonica in the Main Theme of Plok!! I also feel that there were better representations of awesome Plok! music in previous weeks, but surprisingly, none of them placed. Not sure how good their competition was though, of course. I don't like Main Theme was much as Plok's House or Akrillik, but it's some great work by Follin. The track also stands out a lot amongst this week's group. I'm thinking it's the upbeat style of the track that does it, although it's possible that my nostalgia for the little flea exterminator is kicking in. DRAGON DANCE revision-2 is a cool little track. I appreciate it, but don't think it's worthy of any points this week. Gotta give it props for the oriental-esque motifs combined with typical dance beats, at least. Factory Beat is a groovy little track, although it doesn't do all that much for me. I was expecting something more serious from the game's title, but this upbeat style is a welcome surprise. :p Enjoyable stuff, but not top-tier for this week. 3 Points ~ Myst IV Revelation (PC Game Rip) - Bomb Factory 2 Points ~ Plok! (SNES Game Rip) - Main Theme 1 Point ~ Genso Sangokushi II Original Sound Track - Tong Guan Waterway - Rain on the Mountain Quote:

Ugh, I just can't win. Literally. My nomination is going to get skunked this week. I'm not even going to give it a point. I just wanted to spotlight a somewhat-enjoyable soundtrack, and while the pickings weren't grand, I went for the track that had its moments (maybe if I mentioned that it's supposed to be a Silent Hill theme, it would have garnered a few measley points). Not that any of the others tracks are that much better, but I didn't want my track to be saved by me. Let it die on its own sword.
You can figure out what track I'm talking about when the point tallies come up. Anway, quick point distribution. (2 points) Factory Beat (1 point) Tong Guan (1 point) Bomb Factory (1 point) Main Theme (1 point) World Sequence |

Good to hear you're doing well.
Short impressions: Bonus Track 2 - Eh. Vergil Battle 2 - Very boring. Tong Guan Waterway - Not bad. Whoa, that was short. MEGALOMANIA - Decent. Another really short one. Bomb Factory - Environmental piece? Ooh, yay for bass. This is nice. Main Theme - Aah, I can immediately tell this one's going to be good. Funny, it reminded me of FF8's "Mods de Chocobo" at first. DRAGON DANCE revision-2 - Boring. Factory Beat - Ahhhhh, yeah. It's always nice to have a funky song in the mix. Nothing really amazing this week, though Bomb Factory was the standout. Probably a bit of a weak selection overall. 2 pts. - Bomb Factory 2 pts. - Main Theme 1 pt. - Factory Beat 1 pt. - MEGALOMANIA Close - Tong Guan Waterway |
_DH_, Where did you get that Banana Blitz Staff Roll track? The rip I found doesn't include that... did you rip it yourself?

I ripped it myself. Wouldn't mind getting a hold of someone else's more complete rip though.

This is the first week in some time that has brought about a very satisfying result for me. The winning three are the ones to which I awarded points. And it was about time a Plok! track cracked into the winner's circle.
The legend of Tim Follin continues its reign in SotW. |
Beh, I always assumed Geoff composed Main Theme. Is there a composer breakdown?
|
Bomb Factory didn't even place?! That makes me sad.
Good to see Follin continue to do well, though this piece didn't particularly stand out as one of his best or most interesting. |
