Big update today (finally), 24 new tracks by my count. Ordinarily I'd post after I'd listened to the tracks, but I'm currently in the middle of listening to a radio show. Besides, it's been forever since the last update so we gotta get the word out as soon as possible and so forth.

Darkcomet72 Mar 10, 2006 11:19 PM

This new batch made me cry. Most of the songs are 4 points or less, and I only got 4 of them. Other than that, most of the songs were pretty awesome.

We can all agree that #175 is the best song on the entire list, though.

THE POWER OF WATER Mar 11, 2006 01:42 AM

Hmm, did pretty well in this batch. Got #161, #163, #164, #170, #172, #178, and #183.

The only one that sounds familiar that I didn't get is #179; I know I've heard that riff before, but the rest of the track is unfamiliar.

Toma Mar 11, 2006 01:44 AM

Wow, #170 sounds almost exactly like a song that I wrote. I dont' recognize the tune, but my heart skipped a beat when the kalimba came in.

I don't know if I'm the only one, but I'm submitting a lot of votes for songs I don't know, just to get the names of the soundtracks. Upon reviewing my answers, I guessed Toaplan games for two Techno Soft ones. I got the composer right on #170, but the game wrong (it wasn't me ;)).

Also, #175 is great. I've never heard the music to that game, but I'll have to check it out.

I've considered doing that, but there's always the chance that I'll listen to a soundtrack later on and remember one of the tracks from VGMQ; that's happened a couple of times. But not for the tracks that I really DO want full versions of. :(

Dopefish Mar 11, 2006 02:00 AM

I suck at this game...I'm accurate but I don't know much.

I got 167, 168, 172, 173 and 180.

What's the hardest (based on points) song you've gotten correct? My high score is 6 on 3 songs (92, 103, 139).

I wonder if they're picking any recent music (last 5 or so years)...the most recent music I've gotten right was from the mid-90s.

I've gotten four 7-pointers: #12, #50, #81, and #86. I could've sworn that one of those was worth 8, but I guess not. :(

Yes. I'm more familiar with the older stuff, so I don't have many examples to point to, but #111 and #140 are both 2001 games.

ikkei Mar 11, 2006 08:03 AM

0183, 0181, 0179, 0167, 0164 and 0161 this time. 173 also sounds very familiar (and very good) to me, so maybe I can search for it. Anyway, the 181 is going to give me some good points (6), so I hope to go up some positions ^^

Yep, I do that too :)

Drakken Mar 11, 2006 12:48 PM

Hey, thanks for letting me know GFF was back, darkcomet. :)

I did surprisingly well this time. I knew #161, 164, 166, 170, 172, 175, 179, 182, and 183. That's 23 points.

I've heard 167 before, but I can't place it. I'd say 182 is the best song in this batch.

Darkcomet72 Mar 11, 2006 02:06 PM

Hey, no problem.

Oh, and I also got #014. That song's been bugging me since the beginning.

And I was looking at the member list, and was wondering how Toma and ikkei had such a high attempt percentage (with a low correct percentage to boot). Now I know :D

Kaleb.G Mar 11, 2006 07:35 PM

I only got a half-dozen. I'm 99% positive that I know the game series of this seventh track, but I don't know the exact installment, and I don't want to make any invalid guesses. Also, I've heard #166 before, but I don't know what it's from and it's going to drive me mad.

Double Post:
Got #166. It was actually the first thing I thought of, but then I was like "nah, that can't be it". I checked some of the music on my HD, and it turns out it was.

JumboMaverick Mar 14, 2006 06:12 PM

I suck at this quiz (only 42 points)... I guess that's what I get for never owning a sega system, except for Saturn.

I've only actually played two of the... seven maybe Sega games that I've gotten points for. There's definitely a major Nintendo bias in my answers, and I've got 153 points. From what I understand, the guy isn't trying to favor one system over another.

Send the guy an e-mail.

cubed Mar 14, 2006 08:23 PM

it's ok now. I just got it.

and I... suck anyway..... I clicked the wrong "Guess" so I answered #50 instead of #51 -_-

I'm waiting to see my score..

Double Post:
got 79 woohoo.

But for any others, forget about it. I'm pretty sure I don't even know those other games (or maybe just the name). So I guess it's my final score.

Drakken Mar 25, 2006 04:28 PM

Finally updated today with 14 new tracks. He said he tried to include some newer stuff, but so far it seems like a pretty normal update. I'm not doing too well with this one; only have 2 out of 7 right now. :-/

Argh, I've heard #194 but don't remember what it's from. #196 sounds familiar as well.

Ended up getting #189, 191, and 197 right. I think my guess for 187 is right as well. Still have to figure out what 194 is.

EDIT: Yay, my guess for 187 was indeed correct. So, 4 out of 14. :p

THE POWER OF WATER Mar 25, 2006 07:28 PM

Most of my points come from older tracks. ;_;

And proving that right, the only ones I got were #190 and #198. I swear I listened to #196 in the past few days, and good Lord is #194 familiar.

Anyone who doesn't get #190 needs to be shot, by the way. CLASSIC

Darkcomet72 Mar 25, 2006 07:38 PM

Okay, this is an awesome bunch of tracks. I got 188, 191, 194, 197, and the godly 198. However, the tracks I don't know are pretty awesome.

Oh, and *gets shot*

value tart Mar 25, 2006 08:48 PM

I just got 197 in record time. 2 notes. :P

198 I got CLOSE, but probably won't get the points for. I got one word right. ;_;

Got 191 and 189 also...

I dodged a bullet by guessing 190. =o

I got #60 in one melody note, assuming you don't count the bassline. Although you probably should. :(

Assuming the word you got right was the second one and not the first, you won't get any points, since the track didn't appear in the game I think you guessed.

Double Post:
Got #194 finally; knew I'd heard it before. Still working on #196.

ikkei Mar 27, 2006 04:29 PM

Hi!

187, 189, 191, 194, 195, 197 for me.

I found the 196 very familiar, and I nearly know the 188th one, but not sure which version it's.

Uuuuh, I think that I'll try to guess something... :fishing:

value tart Mar 27, 2006 04:41 PM

ANYONE WHO DOESN'T KNOW 197 FAILS AT LIFE.

*cough*CHz*cough*

Kaleb.G Mar 28, 2006 01:00 PM

More like anyone who doesn't know 193 fails at life. That soundtrack is awesome.

ikkei Mar 28, 2006 01:55 PM

I got the 188 and guessed the 60 :D

Darkcomet72 Mar 28, 2006 02:55 PM

I went back to answer #14 and now I have more points than CHz

#193 I have a hunch, but I don't have the soundtrack, so I'm prolly gonna download it(them) to be sure.

THE POWER OF WATER Mar 28, 2006 04:39 PM

I just listened to a remix of #179 right now, so I went back and answered that one. Knew it was familiar~

Also, according to Mo0 and Kaleb, apparently I doubly fail at life. But we all knew this already. :(

SuperSonic Mar 28, 2006 08:35 PM

I fail at life too...because I've never heard of 197 in my life.

Those who haven't heard of 188 also fail at life. That only

seems fair.

RushJet1 Mar 30, 2006 08:12 AM

i read that, and thought "hm, i didn't vote on 188." but then i remembered a song that was pretty much drilled into my head while playing a game......

Kaleb.G Mar 30, 2006 12:22 PM

I'm 90% sure I know what 188 is. I've never played the game, but I've listened to the soundtrack. I only kept three tracks from it, so I'll need to download the whole thing again and compare. ;)

RushJet1 Mar 30, 2006 02:14 PM

meh, i put the wrong game, but i know it regardless

stupid stupid

Drakken Mar 31, 2006 01:14 PM

Yay for going back and getting old ones. I happened to listen to an arrangement of one of the songs I hadn't been sure about and then listened to all the VGMQ songs trying to find it. It was #37. +4 points! :p

THE POWER OF WATER Apr 3, 2006 01:35 PM

There was a three-track mini-update, including a dreaded 9-pointer. The news post gives a cryptic warning, "Be careful with #0199."

I didn't get any of them, so I don't know what he meant by that. :(

Drakken Apr 3, 2006 02:30 PM

Didn't get any of them either. Too bad there were only three this week. :-/

ikkei Apr 3, 2006 02:37 PM

Me neither. Well, I was fortunate to find the #113, I hope that I didn't fail in that.

ikkei Apr 9, 2006 01:05 PM

There was a new update.

Just got the 202 and 209, and maybe can search for the 208.

Kaleb.G Apr 9, 2006 06:40 PM

One thing I can think of is that it starts off sounding rather similar to 097. But I got that, so I should be able to handle this.

Darkcomet72 Apr 9, 2006 07:45 PM

Okay, I got 202, 208, and 210. 209 was like getting shot in 11 places.

Toma Apr 9, 2006 09:29 PM

I got #201, 208 and 209.

I also agree with DarkComet's assertion on #209...that one needs to be OLRed.

Drakken Apr 10, 2006 03:54 PM

Didn't get any of them yet again. :-/

Really bloody annoying when you know one of the songs off by heart yet can't get the name. 166, how I loathe you.

Oh, add 189 to that too.

THE POWER OF WATER Apr 16, 2006 12:52 AM

HOW THE FUCK DID I NOT GET #196 UNTIL NOW

I KNEW I knew that stupid track. Goddammit.

Also, the guy running it had a hard drive crash, so there won't be any updates for a while. :(

ikkei Apr 28, 2006 03:27 PM

There was a new update. It seems that there is lots of retro material this time :1zhelp: :tpg:

THE POWER OF WATER Apr 28, 2006 06:40 PM

#213, #215, and #217 coming up for a small amount of points. For me, getting 30% of an update is pretty good. :(

#212 sounds sort of familiar; I'm probably thinking of a remix if I've heard it before.

Drakken Apr 28, 2006 10:31 PM

Got #215. I've heard 213 before, but I can't remember what it is. Perhaps it will come to me in time.

Man, 1/10. Not doing too well lately. :-/

Luphurix Apr 29, 2006 04:50 AM

Is this guy ever gunna give the answers out so I can finally know where some of these tracks are from?

Darkcomet72 Apr 29, 2006 08:48 AM

Got 213 and 215. I KNOW 216 AND 218. Hopefully they'll come to me.

A lot of low values this time around. Pretty painful stuff.

Trench May 2, 2006 09:49 PM

If you got 191 and 88, you're my hero.

If you got 92 and 41, you've played more games than I thought. XD

If you got 41 you're awesome.

If you got 67 I owe you MONEY. ^_^

But seriously I got virtually every PC game on there and I'm not even a PC player. And then when something came around with 6 points I knew it within the first .4 seconds, and when something came around with 2 points, I would stare like "wtf?"

This is awesome.

THE POWER OF WATER May 4, 2006 10:42 AM

Update of five tracks.

They were neat, but I didn't get any. :(

ikkei May 4, 2006 03:24 PM

I only got the #225. At least I see that I'm not the worst :P

Toma May 4, 2006 04:39 PM

I only got #223, but I'm surprised I'm the only one so far, considering it's from the BEST GAME EVER.

Drakken May 4, 2006 10:09 PM

I got #223 as well; didn't know the others.

Haruhi May 4, 2006 11:00 PM

Eep... my perfect Correct Ratio got ruined because I clicked on the wrong link to answer . . . ! D:
Ah well, at least I got two right. I'd be pleasantly surprised if anyone else guesses 224.

fliptout May 7, 2006 11:13 PM

I got 173 right IMO, but it was marked wrong. Sent the guy feedback, if he posts here and sees this send me a PM here if you wanna discuss, because its the only one I've gotten "wrong" so far, but it should be right ;)

I don't think he posts here (if he has posted in any version of this thread, he hasn't identified himself), but he seems to be pretty good with that sort of thing; I know someone who's e-mailed him a couple of times about tracks and gotten things sorted out.

ikkei May 11, 2006 04:48 PM

Another update... and no points for me! :superlativecry:

THE POWER OF WATER May 12, 2006 03:11 AM

Sweet zombie Jesus, I absolutely, positively know #228.

Damn. I'm going to sleep in ten minutes, but this is going to keep me awake in bed all night. :(

Double Post:
Got it while I was brushing my teeth. Had to boot my computer back up. :(

Darkcomet72 May 12, 2006 09:40 AM

Finally, an update I'm good at.

Got #226(My favorite soundtrack of all time), #228, #229 and I KNOW #230 somewhere. It's gonna take me forever to find, but I WILL find it.

#226 is from my favorite soundtrack of all time.

EDIT: Okay, I got #230. If anyone else from here gets this, I will give them a million dollars.

4 out of 5... pretty good :)

Toma May 12, 2006 11:17 AM

I got #226, but #228 is driving me nuts. I'm absolutely sure I've heard this piece many times, but I just can't place it.

Easiest million bucks I ever made :)

Well, I think I'm right anyway.

THE POWER OF WATER May 14, 2006 06:08 PM

And we've got ten new tracks. Got #231 (surprised it's a 4 pointer), might know #233 (sounds vaguely familiar, but I wouldn't be surprised if I'm confusing it with another track), owned #235 hard, should probably know #237, and got #239 immediately since I totally just listened to a remix of it twenty minutes ago (but I just wiped my Last.fm last played list so NO CHEATS >=O).

11 points comin' up, which'll finally put me over 200. Seeing the people with more than 300 makes me cry. :(

Kaleb.G May 18, 2006 11:43 PM

OCRJudges more liek OCRFGTS.

Also, wow, I'm really slipping behind on my score. But, to be fair, there are a handful of tracks I still haven't guessed on simply because I want to be 100% sure I'm correct, and thus need to verify.

Drakken May 20, 2006 01:41 AM

Wish I could listen to the new songs. I can't seem to figure out what my password for that site was; the computer it was saved on kind of crashed last week unfortunately.

THE POWER OF WATER Jun 1, 2006 10:17 PM

Ten new tracks, FINALLY.

#241 eludes me.

I thought #246 was from Alfred Chicken, initially, but I got it in the end.

#249 is not worth three points.

Toma Jun 1, 2006 11:21 PM

Sure it's not, but I'll take it ;)

Got 241, 244, and of course 249. I have a guess on 246 and I'm 99.999999...% sure I would be wrong just because the game is probably the single most popular game the original GB ever saw (well, other than Tetris) and a track from it would probably not be worth 4 points.

Drakken Jun 11, 2006 05:17 PM

Finally back on my computer, so I was able to download and listen to the songs. Didn't do well at all. Out of 25, I only got 5 of them - 228, 231, 239, 246, and 249.

KyleDunamis Jun 13, 2006 06:06 PM

Argh! I purposely guessed #245 wrong just to get the answer. I can see the level, I know it's an automatically scrolling level in a sidescroller of some sort, thats within another level with a slower version of that song being for the main level, and I'm pretty sure it's for Genesis. So frustrating. I believe the area its played in involves clouds, too.

Drakken Jun 21, 2006 11:54 AM

10 new tracks today. I'm going through them now. I got 251 but don't know the next three.

EDIT: Got 256 as well. 254 sounds like a certain composer's work, but I'm not sure what game it would be from. Gotta do some digging.

THE POWER OF WATER Jun 21, 2006 06:03 PM

Ah ha, finally. Been getting antsy.

Too bad I didn't get any of them. :(

KyleDunamis Jun 21, 2006 08:03 PM

#254 is on my ipod :)
#251 has a MAJOR hint as its fading out. But which one in the series is it? Edit: Checked NSFs, I got the wrong one in the series.
#256 sounds like Iwadare's take on a certain FF song. (I have no clue what it is, so I'm just speculating)
#257 also sounds Iwadare-ish, again no clue what it is or who REALLY composed it

SonicPanda Jun 21, 2006 08:34 PM

Let's see, this time I got 251, 252, 253 (helped that the music is the best thing about this particular game), 254, and 257, and also going back and filling in 230. Hopefully enough to get back in the top 5, but I'm fine if it's not.

positively,

WITHOUT A DOUBT,

why I have to listen to the whole song before moving on.

Luckily it's one of the soundtracks in the series I haven't heard, so I only feel 95% ashamed.

Darkcomet72 Jun 21, 2006 10:33 PM

Most embarassing update in a while. Got 251 and 256, which are pretty much giveaways once you listen.

Darkcomet72 Jul 4, 2006 09:19 AM

Nothing like going back and getting more tracks. Never thought I'd see myself surpassing Kaleb. :D

So this is what first pagedom feels like. Eh, needs more saltwater taffy.

EDIT: What the hell? 18th place? Man, people are ruthless.

Also, 10 new tracks:

#261 seems a bit familiar, although the series my gut is telling me it's from seems too well-known for six points.

#262 and #269 are songs I should get. This quiz has taught me that I'm really rusty on my NES and GB music. :(

#264 is from a fucking awesome soundtrack.

#266 seems oddly familiar, although, if anything, it sounds more like repeated variations on the intro of a song I've heard before.

And how is #268 possibly worth three points. Dead serious.

Drakken Jul 10, 2006 10:35 PM

Only got #268. Some of them sound familiar to me, but I can't remember what they're from. Man, my memory is horrible. :-/

TheKnightOfNee Jul 13, 2006 07:03 PM

Hi people. I signed up for these forums because I was looking for a place to talk to people about this quiz, and I found this thread through google. =D

I have one pending answer, but if that goes through, then I'll be at 202 points. I only got 262 and 268 out of the last ten, though.

Most songs I can get if I've heard them before, but there are a few I've listened hundreds of times and can't remember the game for the life of me (like #60, ugh)

Drakken Jul 13, 2006 07:21 PM

It's from my favorite soundtrack for the system. I've actually considered nominating an extended version of track #60 for SotW, but never too strongly. :(

I’m not going to take down the site; I’ve had plenty of positive feedback and I’m not going to let a handful of children bring it down. But unfortunately due to a few base people, it may not be quite as enjoyable as it was before.

Perhaps we can have a master list for ourselves?

THE POWER OF WATER Jul 17, 2006 07:13 PM

Well, that explains the disgusting scores some people had. :(

Why not!

I scanned the member list and pulled names of people I recognized and looked like they've been participating at least somewhat recently. If you want your name included, let me know, and give me your VGMQ name in case it's different from your GFF name.

Removals from the list will cost $5 or a polite request.

KyleDunamis Jul 17, 2006 08:51 PM

I'm CCKenny on there

Kaleb.G Jul 17, 2006 09:05 PM

Man that Sonic Cult list has some SPOILERS, but I'm going to refrain from looking and play fair.

(Okay, I looked at the first one, but only because it was driving me insane. I won't submit it unless I happen to come across the answer in the future, fairly and by chance, of course.)

Anyway, I haven't even participated in this for a while. Perhaps I'll get to it later this week.

TheKnightOfNee Jul 18, 2006 04:44 AM

I saw the first one on that list posted, but I went and started playing video games to make myself forget it, and I have forgotten it now, thankfully. I'll bookmark that page though, just in case I ever want to find out.

I clicked CHz's link, and for some reason thought I was still reading the most current post. I got to the part of his post that was made months ago, and went, "Wow! 24 new tracks?!"

Sequel_Boy Jul 19, 2006 09:15 AM

Hi there!

I, too, was looking for a place to discuss the quiz. Thanks to those bastages from Sonic Cult forums, all the scores are gone and, well, my motivation to pass Megamatt is gone heh.

Now I don't know if you want me to tag along because you may think that we cheated to have the scores that we have but I can swear to god that Megamatt is just a game music genious. I know him pretty well since we're both on the minibosses message board at theshizz.org.

For my part, I've made non-stop reserch for those awnsers until the whole Sonic forum event occured. I must say that maybe 20% of my awnsers comes from friends of mine who wanted to help me to get the top spot of the quiz so I don't have any merit of doing the quiz alone.

I'm really happy to see that the whole community of this board is lively and friendly and I sure hope that I can join you guys! :p

Peace

cubed Jul 19, 2006 09:37 AM

damn I'm so bad... 127 compared to 382.... at least I'm not the last O_o....

Sequel_Boy Jul 30, 2006 12:48 AM

New track viewing modes are up
Also, check out DarkWolf' suggestion about creating groups. What do you guys think about that?

TheKnightOfNee Jul 30, 2006 02:35 AM

Just noticed the update. I wish it would've been more tracks instead, and the sorting methods later. I haven't got any new songs in the past week.

A group for people would be a good idea, as we kind of have one going already.

THE POWER OF WATER Jul 30, 2006 05:40 AM

Yeah, I wish there were new tracks too, but the new sorting methods are kinda cool. I used them briefly to snag two tracks I passed by earlier (like #142... how could I POSSIBLY have not known that right away ;__;). I really need to go back through all the tracks again some time soon.

And I'm proud to say that I have guessed all four 1-pointers correctly!

The 2's and above are another story. :(

Regarding groups, I think they'd be a great idea; it'd be less maintenance than updating the first post, and the scores'd presumably be instantly updated. I filled out the feedback form saying that they're something I'd like to see, providing that he doesn't spend so much time implementing them that we go updateless for a long while.

Drakken Jul 30, 2006 07:24 PM

I went back and got one of the 2-pointers. I knew what series it was from; I just had to do some searching to find the specific title.

It's been awhile since he's updated with more songs. :-/

EDIT: Got a 3-pointer as well. 3 more points to 200! :p

EDIT^2: Woohoo; got a 4-pointer (that I should've gotten the first time)! 201 now.

Sequel_Boy Jul 30, 2006 08:34 PM

Two tracks are driving me nuts right now...
#86 and #142...I'm not gonna sleep happy until I find em

Jockolantern Jul 31, 2006 12:19 PM

Wow, #65 brings back memories from long, long ago! Not surprised at how few of us know it, as it was and is a pretty obscure game. Great to see it up there though. :) Also, I seem to notice a rather unhealthy obsession with Sega Genesis music in this quiz. I mean, either that, or I just don't know my Genesis music worth diddly squat... which I don't. ;) Almost up to 100 points by now, which is sadly low, considering how much music I thought I knew by this point in my video gaming life. :( Tons of tracks that sound immensely familiar to me, but I'm just the slightest breadth away from having the game titles click in my brain.

#22! My introduction to shareware games as a young kid of 11 or 12, and what a great game it was too. I was actually hoping this game's music popped up somewhere in the quiz... and there it was! :)

~Jockolantern~

Sequel_Boy Jul 31, 2006 01:45 PM

Bleh, I don't know the awnser to those heh

Yeah, there's a big amount of sega games on that quiz. When I realized that, i've made a huge GYM file reserch and well...look at my points. I never played half of those games but still, I found em heh.

Maybe I have too much time on my hands...

TheKnightOfNee Jul 31, 2006 04:46 PM

Hey, I know one of those two tracks you mentioned, Sequel Boy. But not the other three recently mentioned.

I too, noticed the large amount of Sega Genesis songs. There are also a decent number of Master System songs too. I'm really unfamiliar with most Sega games, unfortunately, so I don't know what to look through to find a bunch of these.

Drakken Jul 31, 2006 05:35 PM

Yeah, I'm in the same boat as you two. I never owned a Sega system growing up; I only just got a Genesis in the past year. So, that's my main weakness.

SonicPanda Aug 1, 2006 11:46 PM

384 points here personally, having just put in 262, 264, 267, and 268. I'm 95% sure I know 265, but I'd like to be certain before I put that 100% correct in jeopardy.

And there's cheaters now? Lousy dinks.

EDIT: Whoops, 398. Forgot to put in the ones the Best Song Contest helped me out with.

Darkcomet72 Aug 6, 2006 11:22 PM

Going back is fun. I got #16, #163, and #189, upping my score to 300. Excellent.

I don't really think there is much of a bias torwards the Genesis particularly; perhaps you guys's lack of knowledge of the system makes it seem that way?

TheKnightOfNee Aug 7, 2006 03:14 AM

Well, compared to songs from Nintendo games that seemed just as well known to me, the Genesis ones have been worth less points. There are some games that I've never met a single person whose played it, and they've been worth 2 or 3 points.

Also, I wish he'd update with some more songs. It's been forever. =/

Sequel_Boy Aug 8, 2006 09:05 AM

I see that some of you have 100% accuracy but is there someone like me who completely entered the wrong game even tho you knew the right awnser? It happenned to me for #195 and #97. It's like, you're 100% sure of your awnser and afterwards your all like ahhhhh &?$?%$/

Darkcomet72 Aug 8, 2006 12:19 PM

5 new tracks have been added! I guessed for #271(), and #273(:tpg:). #272 seems pretty doable with a bit of intuition, I might be able to find it.

One thing, though, #271 is OBVIOUS, and it still says pending. What happened to the automated grading system? I can't get that wrong...

EDIT: NVM got them right. Upped score to 304.

EDIT2: Got #272. That was pretty easy. Anyone with a similar hunch, you're probably right. Up my score to 310.

TheKnightOfNee Aug 8, 2006 01:49 PM

Got 271 and 273 (271 is my desktop picture =P)

272 I have a hunch on, but I'd have to look for a bit, and I KNOW 275, but I wanna check on that first.

EDIT - yep, got 275

Drakken Aug 8, 2006 03:31 PM

Got 271 and 273. I've heard 272 and 275, but I have to do some checking to be sure of what they are. I know who composed 272; I'm just not sure which game it's from.

EDIT: Yep, I was right on 272; up to 211 points. Now to find 275...

THE POWER OF WATER Aug 8, 2006 05:54 PM

Like there's any doubt on #271.

I think we at GFF have an unfair advantage as far as knowing the source of #272, even though it's one of the tracks from the game that HASN'T been spread around yet.

#273 I know from a lol:tpg: remix.

The only one I got wrong was because I opened an NSF file to check a song, and I found it, but for some reason I thought I was listening to a different NSF set and put up the wrong game. I'll miss those 3 points forever :(

Not really like that, but I downloaded every track on my hard drive, then took a listen of all track. If I knew the answer, then I submit my answer. But I clicked the wrong track, so I answered for the wrong track. Anyway, because we get the answer afterwards I knew I would never could have guessed that one I answered by mistake.

Well, it's probably not an advantage to people who've only been here a month. :\

Dopefish Aug 8, 2006 10:51 PM

Random quessing gets me some garbage points, but I get some songs wrong because I was off by just a little on the game. I wish (and suggested) that you be allowed to reguess songs you were close on only one more time.

Sequel_Boy Aug 9, 2006 07:00 AM

Okay
#271 - Finished that game on arcade last year at the university...free quarters ftw!

#272 - Heard that somewhere for sure but I can't get my finger on it yet

#273 - I have that game and it has been covered XX times

#274 - I probably have a VGmix of that song somewhere on my pc...i'll have to check it out

#275 - This has been remixed by one of the greatest VGM artist i know.

8 points it is!

Let's see,
Track 1: In SotW
Track 2: In SotW
Track 3: In BSC
Track 4: Here
Track 5: Still unaccounted for. Someone needs to top us off already. :-/

I like how the tracks are all in chronological order too.

TheKnightOfNee Aug 10, 2006 07:30 AM

Oh, duh, I am moron. I gave up looking for 272 too soon, because of all these crazy backwards hints. I did figure out the composer though, so I was able to get it now. And I also finally see this advantage, but it certainly didn't help me.

Bleh, I should have joined this forum sooner :(

Drakken Aug 15, 2006 03:21 PM

Nooo! I went back to get an earlier song that I now know because of BSC, and I had already incorrectly guessed it awhile ago. Would've been worth 7 points. :-/

Duck King Aug 16, 2006 08:44 AM

Hi folks,

I was only recently introduced to this awesome quiz about a month ago at another forum, and have been enjoying it ever since. By the time I was able to make it to the top 5, the top list was disabled (damn cheats!)

Anyways, I thought I'd join the only active thread on this quiz I'm aware of.

Edit: Here are my stats: vgmq.garoux.net/?s=7&id=1968

BSC has been good in the regard that I've found a couple tracks through it that I may not have known about. The bad side of it is, I've downloaded some music, and I've heard some songs I recognize. I then spend an hour looking for them on vgmq, before realizing I only recognized them because of the BSC.

Onyx Aug 16, 2006 09:59 AM

Damn, it's been a while since I last checked in with VGM Quiz. I still suck at it though. Right now I'm going through the database and only guessing on the ones I KNOW, and I've been pretty successful so far, over 50 points with only 15 guesses.

I really need to brush up on my chiptune and Sega music though. Damn. If the contest ever ends, I really hope this guy releases a list of all the songs. Some of these rarer songs are hella cool. I'd guess at them to see what game they're from, but I don't want to hurt my average. :)

Sequel_Boy Aug 18, 2006 11:35 AM

Finally found #233 and #140

It's just awesome when you just play a random game and go: Hey, that's in the quiz!

TheKnightOfNee Aug 21, 2006 05:19 PM

He's testing out the group scripts now, which is good news. If they work well, we can have the group up for us to keep track of everyone's scores. And then maybe we'll get some new songs! (Because really, the songs are the most important updates of all)

THE POWER OF WATER Aug 22, 2006 03:50 AM

I started a group, so people who sign up for the trial can join it if they want. It doesn't look like I have any power to add arbitrary people to the group; you have to click "Join" yourself and then I approve you.

I messed up the GFF URL, though. :(

Sequel_Boy Aug 24, 2006 01:45 PM

Awesome!

Is it possible to enter more than one group?

TheKnightOfNee Sep 5, 2006 08:56 AM

Finally got some new points today. It's only been like a month since I figured out a track, geez.

And it's been a long time since the guy updated, too. I want some new tracks. =(

Duck King Sep 7, 2006 10:20 AM

Definitely need new tracks. I hope DarkWolf gets around finishing those scripts and adds 10 or more tracks soon. Of course, you could always go back and try guessing older ones.

And what's up with #0004? No clue what that is til now, and it's only worth 2 and only 24/67 (35.82%) correct. Someting like that should be worth 4-5 points I think.

TheKnightOfNee Sep 7, 2006 10:16 PM

I think some of the early tracks, he probably overestimated or underestimated the popularity of several games. Games he'd heard of a lot as a kid or maybe everyone in his neighborhood had growing up he would assume to be common, but they aren't really. I think a lot of the early point values were skewed towards Sega games being worth less, but the points seem to be fairly accurate now.

I'm more surprised tracks 64, 70, 71, and 200 still haven't been guessed by a single person.

THE POWER OF WATER Sep 15, 2006 01:45 AM

UPDATEUPDATEUPDATEUPDATEUPDATE

Five new tracks.

Only got #277, but I feel like I listened to #276 yesterday.

People should join the GFF group.

I'm currently eating a granola bar.

It seems like you might fuss like butterflies, thinking why?

TheKnightOfNee Sep 15, 2006 02:55 AM

Finally, someone posted so I didn't have to double post!

Yes, free group joining is up, and I joined the GFF group.

I got 277, 278, and 280. Though the answers for 278 and 280 are still pending, but they should be right, as I have those songs from both games to check and make sure I was right.

SonicPanda Sep 15, 2006 10:25 AM

Got 276 and 277, went back and filled in 269 and 128 (all but that last one are pending, but I'm pretty sure), but holy nutbunnies, I KNOW I've heard 278 before. 280 is familiar too, but not saying 'Hey! Listen!' the way 278 is.

Now how would this group thing work? People in a given group share their answers? If so, I will join any group that knows what the dammity HELL #82 is.

If only. :(

A group is just an automatically generated list of people's scores like the one I've been lackadaisically maintaining in the first post.

Duck King Sep 15, 2006 12:53 PM

I know 276 and 278 for sure. 280 is very familiar, but no title has sprung up yet.

And what the hell is 277 that everybody seems to be getting right? I admit I tend to get stumped easily on recent/more popular stuff.

82? It's a bit related to one of the other tracks on the quiz.

KyleDunamis Sep 15, 2006 01:11 PM

Re: 276: Way to choose a version that barely sounds like any other version and have me listen to it about 50x before figuring out what it is.

Drakken Sep 15, 2006 03:27 PM

Aw man, I only got #277 (of course). #280 sounds like something I should be able to guess based on the style, but I'm not sure. :-/

He should let someone else take over who can update more. :p

Toma Sep 15, 2006 11:29 PM

Wow, I love 278 and 279, despite not knowing either of them. 279 reminds me of Persona 2. And I got 276, 277 and 280 this round. 275 is driving me mad, I know it's from a game that I have played a ton.

Also, I sent the request to join the GFF group.

277 was actually in Song of the Week a few months back. I'd say more on the subject but I would probably give it away. Thanks for the tip on 82. Doesn't help me (yet), but it's appreciated.

Duck King Sep 16, 2006 08:11 AM

Thanks. I actually figured it out yesterday, judging by all the correct guesses from here, and went through some of the older stuff.*

That only leaves 279 now. Exactly the same scenario with the five previous tracks.

*And I didn't want to input it as my score was looking sexy. =D

Duck King Sep 17, 2006 08:31 AM

Wow. 3 more tracks have been added, and this soon.

Got 282 (<3 this game) & 283 (easy), and I think I should be able to get the 281 with a bit of guesswork.

TheKnightOfNee Sep 17, 2006 09:02 AM

Oh, dang, I just checked the site, and saw no update on the main page, so I left and came here. Whoops. To the new tracks!

283 is possibly the easiest one there now. 281, no clue. 282... I think I've heard this before? But I'm not sure.

Darkcomet72 Sep 17, 2006 10:05 AM

Wow, it's been a while since there was a 1 pointer.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA at 283.

282 is pending, and 281 hurts my face because I KNOW THIS ONE but I can't find it.

EDIT: Got 281. Wow. WTF.

SonicPanda Sep 17, 2006 12:02 PM

Wow, that's creepy. I played a little of 281 just last night. I was halfway tempted to check other ROMs to make sure 283 wasn't one of the variants, but "1 point" kind of made it obvious it wouldn't be. Don't think I've heard 282 before, unfortunately.

Darkcomet72 Sep 17, 2006 12:06 PM

WTF Draconis, how'd your score get so high?!? It's higher than Megamatt's!

Congratulations, man.

EDIT: WTF Board 8 has a group :(

THE POWER OF WATER Sep 17, 2006 02:44 PM

Haha, YES. I LOVE #281, as well as the game it came from. Lots of good tunes there.

282, no clue.

283, duh. :p

TheKnightOfNee Sep 19, 2006 02:52 AM

Whoo, got five new ones so far tonight, giving me 20 points and putting my score over 300. I finally looked into a few fairly popular games that I've never played, and it paid off.

The game does have a port to another system, actually. However, I expect it's more likely that you know the track from a completely different game that also uses the track rather than from the port.

I also wonder if anyone's tried answering with the completely different game. =O

There was a similar situation with another track. I think #122 was a faster version of a song from another game. I wonder what would've happened if anyone guessed the game the tune originally came from.

I would hazard a guess that it would be incorrect. There's some distinct differences between the two, mainly the intro and endings.

Well, just rejoined GFF, and I'm OVERJOYED to see that this still exists, if in a significantly more organized form.

just registered, and started guessing, but I must be some kinda music idiot, since I don't recognize squat. Quick question: In the old thread, we pretty much just posted what music we wanted people to identify, is there any way to get a song of yours up there, or am I at the whim of someone else's music tastes? :D

Oh, hello there. That was a fun thread. I barely knew anything that anyone posted there, though. :(

Regarding your question, the latter is true; we basically just sit back and wait for the guy to update the site with new tracks. Sometimes it takes a while. :(

TheKnightOfNee Oct 4, 2006 07:38 AM

I got a couple friends to join in the quiz, they already have half my score. I hope they don't pass me up. >_>

As such, I've been motivated to go get more points on old tracks, and I've managed to jump up two spots in the GFF group this past week. Still haven't found the most recent track though, but both my friends knew it. :(

Duck King Oct 5, 2006 06:30 AM

I got a couple of tracks the other day, through sheer luck, and one of them was worth 9 points. Now I got half of the 9-pointers (45 points!) figured out.

So, how many of those have you all guessed correctly?

And I'm down to 70 tracks. =D

THE POWER OF WATER Oct 16, 2006 10:14 PM

Another of these new hidden track dealies.

I don't know it, but the refrain is SO familiar. I started looking for the song, and wound up just listening to Shatterhand because <3.

There's also a new stat box on the right side of the page that shows the number of tracks, players, and guesses.

Double Post:
On the plus side, I did go back to get a 5-pointer that's been bugging me forever, #0013.

How could I have passed that one by so many times. :(

Kaleb.G Oct 17, 2006 01:49 AM

Finally got around to this. There are still several I have a RAGING CLUE about, but I want to keep up my 100% correct ratio, so I'm waiting until I get verification (i.e. downloading the soundtracks and flipping through them for the mystery track).

Also, some of my tracks are pending because I used the full game title. I'm so leet.

Drakken Oct 17, 2006 10:54 PM

Don't know the new track. :-/

TheKnightOfNee Oct 17, 2006 11:18 PM

I... don't know this new one off the top of my head. Maybe if I dig around for a while I'll be able to get it.

I went and downloaded a bunch of new music over the past two weeks, and got about 70 points worth of new scores so far this month, which puts me in 4th place in our group.

Duck King Oct 18, 2006 09:27 AM

Don't know the last one either. Sounds like some generic shop music or something. I'll have to look a bit into it.

And speaking of #0013, pure unadulterated <3! I even heard a fan piano arrange for it once, which was gorgeous.

Way to go, TheKnightOfNee!

TheKnightOfNee Oct 18, 2006 12:46 PM

You spoke too soon, Draconis. =(

Ugh, I just got my first wrong answer. It stings like an deep wound. Stupid 199, sounded almost identical to stuff from another game, and I was too hasty to notice that the end of 199 is slightly different than the track I was listening to.

AND OH, THERE IT IS, #97. If only I had started looking for it on the other end. >_<

Duck King Oct 18, 2006 03:26 PM

Damn, I jinxed you. =s

Yeah, those two have pretty similar intros. Funny there was something about it on the site, and this post back on page 2. No matter, I think you got the right idea now. Keep at it.

And going through some of the older posts, I doubly "fail at life" for not knowing either #0193 or #0197. The latter sounds pretty awesome though.

TheKnightOfNee Oct 18, 2006 03:33 PM

Yeah, I remember seeing that post months back, now that I fell for the same trick. That's what got the most, the fact that I knew in the back of my mind to watch out for it.

I probably wasn't going to get #199 for a long while anyways though, so it's not like I got something wrong I was on the verge of finding, at least.

And wow, you don't know 197? 193 I don't know either...

THE POWER OF WATER Oct 29, 2006 08:02 PM

Not only are there three new tracks, but they're tracks that were announced on the front page!

I didn't get any of them, though. :(

Drakken Oct 29, 2006 10:47 PM

Hmm...he said one of those is from a recent game that he bought, but they all sound older. Maybe it's from a DS/PSP game.

I didn't know any of them, btw. :-/

Duck King Oct 30, 2006 01:35 PM

Awesome!

Got #0287 from this new batch (hah what an intro!) #0286 is gonna drive me nuts, as I think I've heard it before. I suppose #0288 would be from the recent game he's talking about. And I did get #0285 earlier (my initial guess was off) and it has some connection with another recently added track.

Kaleb.G Oct 31, 2006 12:23 AM

The same for me on both accounts. I have a RAGING CLUE about 0286, but I'll have to research it another time.

TheKnightOfNee Oct 31, 2006 12:47 AM

I haven't got any of these new three. And ugh, recently added games? I've probably only bought three games that have come out within the past three years, as I'm typically behind a couple years on most games. I won't be getting that one for a while.

I did get number 180 though, putting me up to 450 points... which still isn't even halfway to Draconis. Geez.

Duck King Nov 20, 2006 06:12 AM

Bumping this to drum up some more interest (come on group Gamingforce, start racking up those points!!!), and to congratulate TheKnightOfNee on his magnificent climb to the #3 spot (and for getting his first 9-pointer).

Congratulations! =)

THE POWER OF WATER Nov 21, 2006 05:55 PM

Bah, 9-pointers. >:(

The highest valued ones I have are four 7-pointers: numbers 12, 50, 81, and 86. I swear #81 was worth 8 points when I answered it, though. :(

::waits impatiently for an update::

TheKnightOfNee Nov 22, 2006 04:06 AM

A week ago, I hit both 500 points and got that 9 pointer in the same day. I wanted to post about it, but I was already the last post at the time.

I was actually really surprised that one was a 9 pointer, because the means by which I had found it was the same as a handful of other tracks. But seeing as #10 only had a 15% success rate, I guess there must be a reason it's a 9. And for some reason I still don't have any of those pesky 8's. Or that stupid 161, how is that crap only 1 point?

KyleDunamis Nov 22, 2006 01:31 PM

Just broke 200 (201 to be exact.) A couple of Sega ones were there, and I guessed totally at random and got them. One was a very low pointer and sounded like Sega Master Syetem synth, so I literally guessed one of the pack-in games with that system and it was right.

Duck King Nov 23, 2006 06:30 AM

Quote:

Or that stupid 161, how is that crap only 1 point?
Haha. It's probably from a really popular game that you've probably played and forgot all about the music? I didn't know it at first, until I went back and listened to the soundtrack.

I'm still pulling my hair over #286. Add to that #86, since I've started the quiz. Now where did I hear that before?! =/

Incidentally, I have 4 tracks left unsolved in each of those 7, 8 & 9-pointers.

What about the least popular tracks you've guessed? I'm like one of three persons to get both #30 & #250 right, which aren't that obscure if you ask me...

THE POWER OF WATER Nov 23, 2006 11:15 PM

The least popular track I've guessed correctly is... #86! =O

I wish I knew who the composer to that game was, because the soundtrack is awesome. :(

#72 is the only other track I've guessed correctly that less than 20 people total have gotten.

TheKnightOfNee Nov 23, 2006 11:56 PM

Number 72 has only 6 correct guesses, and that's the least guessed one that I have.

72, 105, 61, 242, 10, and 151 are all the ones that have single digit correct guesses that I have. Number 14 is the most guessed one that I don't know.

SonicPanda Nov 24, 2006 12:43 AM

For a good long time, I was apparently the only guy who knew #30...the number of correct guesses is up to three now though, so I don't feel quite so geeky for knowing it.

Hmmm...other ones:
2 others know 227,
5 others know 230,
7 others know 224,
10 others know numbers 3 and 208,
14 others know 269,
18 others know 276,
and 20 others know 272 (and most from here, I'd wager).

All told, not bad.

EDIT: Following Draconis' and TheKnightOfNee's example, I'll add that the most popular ones that elude me are 172, 17, and 33. Curse them.

DOUBLE EDIT: Hail Draconis, fellow #30 guesser.

I got most of these, too. Well, except for 227 & 208. Good ones there.

We #30 guessers rule!
*wonders who the 3rd mystery guesser is*

I'm one of those tracks' guessers, too! Nice pick.

Track I wish I knew what it was, because it rawks and I want the complete track: #234!

TheKnightOfNee Dec 2, 2006 08:49 AM

So, I finally got #161, the last one pointer. And I could've sworn to god I had already guessed that game for another song. Regardless of if it did or not, I feel like banging my head on something for having not figured this out until now.

Anyways, that 1 point puts me exactly 100 behind sequel_boy. Does he still even come around here anymore?

Duck King Dec 23, 2006 03:19 PM

FOUR NEW ONES!

Just got the easiest of the bunch for now. The rest sound eerily familiar. I can say for certain I've heard 289 before, but where from is an entirely different matter. More stuff to ponder over. >_<

Darkcomet72 Dec 23, 2006 03:29 PM

Hey it's been a while.

Got 290 (surprised it's 8 points, but not complaining), and 291 (remarkable soundtrack for it's time). I guess the lack of updates, or perhaps lack of announced updates is reducing my interest for some reason. I found a song I remember in the quiz, but I haven't gone back to even look for it yet.

TheKnightOfNee Dec 23, 2006 06:14 PM

Got the obvious one. I know I've heard 289 before, so I should be able to find it soon. 290 also sounds familiar, but I have no idea where to look.

Also, congrats to Draconis for finally getting above 1000 points!

EDIT - Got number 289. Well, it's pending, but I know I got it.

Drakken Dec 23, 2006 10:26 PM

Wow, I know 292. I'm proud of myself for remembering that one. :D

Wooooo for 290. I was considering nominating that track for SotW awhile back. So awesome.

No idea what 289 or 291 are. Still, 2/4, and 15 points between them, that's gotta be a record for me. :p

And same here, dc72. There are at least two I should go back to get sometime.

What was the "easiest one," Draconis?

THE POWER OF WATER Dec 24, 2006 03:09 AM

Like Drakken, I've got no clue on 289 and 291. 291 seems very slightly familiar, but nowhere near familiar enough to place it.

I totally know 290, but I gotta go rooting for it.

292 is awesome. I think I know why Drakken got it, but the version I'm thinking he's thinking of is actually from the sequel (compare the synths).

Duck King Dec 24, 2006 04:49 PM

Why 291, of course. That thing has seen many ports in its day.

Also got 290 figured (wow, that was quite easy for 8 points!).

289, 289, 289... the one track I was most familiar, I knew the notes beforehand whilst listening to it, and I'm sill clueless.

TheKnightOfNee Jan 3, 2007 01:19 AM

A couple months after finally getting a 9 pointer, I finally got my first 8 pointer today. Number 177. Looking at a list of games to listen to the music from, I almost passed over that based on the name. I'm glad I didn't.

Toma Jan 3, 2007 12:13 PM

Argh, 290 is SO familiar. I know I've played that, or at least listened to the music. Maybe it'll come up in the Chiptune contest. For some reason I'm thinking Falcom.

Edit: Got it! I remember I got this soundtrack from a link in Drakken's sig a while back.

Duck King Jan 3, 2007 11:21 PM

Yeah, that pretty much gave it away. =)

I should know 289, but I still don't =( Anyone kind enough to drop me whatever hint?

And it's funny how I discovered 100 only recently. What an awesome soundtrack!

Nice, TheKnightOfNee.

TheKnightOfNee Jan 6, 2007 03:44 AM

Arg, I got another one wrong. But I believe this one to honestly be the same song, just in a port, so I've e-mailed him, and hopefully he overturns it. It's only got a 50% correct rate, so I'm guessing others have made the same guess as me.

SonicPanda Jan 7, 2007 11:35 AM

Just got a healthy dose of points through playing Sega Genesis Collection to death (I KNEW I knew 245, and I'm fairly disgusted it took that long to figure out). Also got some monkeys off my back - 278 clicked quite suddenly, and 91 showed up in another guess-this-tune contest that ended recently. At any rate, I finally cleared 500 points! Woohoo!

P.S. Hmm...a vague hint for 289? Try to search for games with real-life locations as opposed to fantasy worlds.

Duck King Jan 9, 2007 09:29 AM

Thanks. Still drawing a blank, though it should help narrow things down.

Regarding ports and such, it's always a better idea to guess the version the track came from. But in your case, the port I think you've guessed could be alright.

Dopefish Jan 10, 2007 04:38 PM

Sad how they haven't updated this in a while. I NEED MY FIX MAN.

Sequel_Boy Jun 26, 2007 04:25 AM

Jesus Christ, KnightOfNee, everytime I frantically search for a good awnser, you go and find one too and take back the lead from me.

You're gonna make me go nuts heh

TheKnightOfNee Jun 30, 2007 03:44 AM

You've been doing the exact same thing. Every time I find a new track, I look at the standings, and you somehow just leaped back over me. Well, I'm back in the lead for now. (Well not really, Draconis has way too many points still)

Sequel_Boy Jun 30, 2007 04:33 AM

UUUgh! Again? :p
Well...back to super reserch then :)

SilverHawk Jul 4, 2007 06:34 PM

Ah, I just started. I'm only at 27 - I'm not too good at this. :(

I missed a couple easy ones, as well, like (I'm embarrassed...) #15. I guessed the wrong game in the series.

Duck King Nov 25, 2007 12:42 AM

hay guys lol

The quiz is back, revamped and with mostly new content. I didn't have time to go through it all, but it looks swell. Have fun!

TheKnightOfNee Nov 25, 2007 12:44 AM

Oh, wow.

Is all the old stuff still there?

I like how I checked it nearly every day since the last posts in this topic, waiting for new content, but I haven't checked it this whole weekend.

THE POWER OF WATER Nov 25, 2007 12:58 AM

It's had a complete revamp: instead of getting a full list of every single song, you get one chosen at random and have to either guess on it or skip it in order to get the next one. Honestly, I like the old way a lot better because I'd often come up with what game the track came from after I already moved onto something else. Now in order to go back, you have to clear the list of skipped songs and then keep randomly picking them until you get the right one.

The song database has been reset as well; there were around 10 or so when I just ran through them quickly just now. I'm pretty sure one of them was also in the first version of VGMQ, but the others weren't. Your old VGMQ score is in your profile, though.

TheKnightOfNee Nov 25, 2007 01:00 AM

Yeah, I see now. And augh, one of the repeats I couldn't get before, why is it back now?

Hopefully he re-uses all of the old ones eventually, I'd love to still figure out just what they were from.

And congrats Draconis, you finished the old version first overall in score. I ended up finishing in 8th place.

Rimo Nov 25, 2007 07:56 AM

Cool, but I seriously hope nobody will post the answers and allow people to cheat like it happened last time. This really turned me off...

Hmm, and I thought there was more before I left this morning. :(

Yeah, I also liked the old way, but I think DarkWolf went with this randomness in order to deter anybody trying to cheat. Hopefully, there won't be any cheating this time around, or at least it won't be easy, as I think the track order and numbering is different for each & every account.

And cheers, TKON. We should still be able to stay up there somewhere.

This was a nice addition, lol.

TheKnightOfNee Dec 2, 2007 09:37 PM

He finally set it up so you can look back at your own answers. And for those who didn't notice, you can jump to any track if you save the ID number, which is good for people like me and CHz who figure it out at a later time.

Also, 8 new tracks today. I managed to figure out 7 of them (though 2 are still pending, but I'm sure it's because I typed up the titles a bit out of the ordinary). I wish every update went like this.

THE POWER OF WATER Dec 2, 2007 10:13 PM

Yeah, that was a nice song update. I got five of them, and the other three rank from vaguely familiar to man I totally know this one.

I like that the answer list is back. I have a couple answers pending, and I noticed that it shows my answers and the official answers for those also. Did it always do that? I thought that, in the previous quiz, it wouldn't show the answer until it was actually graded.

The skip-to-track feature is also nice. I've already used it once. :o

Duck King Dec 3, 2007 03:50 AM

I got all 8! If all updates went like this, I wouldn't have bald spots! =P

Also loving that answer list, and no, it wasn't like this. But at least you get to know if your guess was right/wrong beforehand, which is cool.

And that skip-to-track-thingamajig is sure handy.

THE POWER OF WATER Dec 19, 2007 01:55 AM

Eight new tracks!

Quote:

This set contains some obscure ones.
hrhr

Got two of them. I expect everyone to get at least one, because it's dead easy. There's a third one that I'm absolutely positive I've heard before, but none of my hunches came through, so I'm going to have to do some digging.

TheKnightOfNee Dec 19, 2007 02:31 AM

I got two of this set of obscure ones. One, I'm sure most everyone here will know, and the other one is just a different segment of a song he used in the original quiz.

There's a third familiar one for me too, but I have no idea where to start looking and don't feel like digging just yet.

Kaleb.G Dec 23, 2007 02:07 AM

Man I know like none of the obscure tracks up there currently. Sounds like they came from PC and/or pre-NES systems; both of which I have very limited experience with.

By the way, does anyone have a list of all of the answers from the old quiz? I still some mps3 left over from it that I like but don't know what games they came from, and I'd like to be able to check out the soundtracks.

Duck King Dec 23, 2007 08:30 AM

This set ain't easy. I managed to guess the same two CHz and TheKnightOfNee probably got, in addition to one from an oldie PC game.

I also have the mp3s for the old quiz, and the answers for the 245 tracks I got from the original 292. We could try to compile a full list as I, too, would like to know the answers for some. But I am not sure whether that would be a good idea, as some of the old material is still in use in the new quiz, and more is likely to be added.

THE POWER OF WATER Jan 6, 2008 09:28 PM

Eight new songs added today, and he claims that they're a little easier than the last set. I will confirm this, as I got five of them.

Rimo Jan 6, 2008 10:24 PM

Cool! Yeah, some are definitely (too) easy, but there's still half of the batch that left me clueless.

TheKnightOfNee Jan 6, 2008 10:36 PM

I also got 5 in this last set (and probably the same 5 as CHz), and there's a sixth that sounds kinda familiar.

Duck King Jan 7, 2008 02:19 PM

Nice bunch, if a bit on the easy side. 7/8 for me. Didn't know the piano one. I am never good with piano tunes.

megamatt Mar 12, 2008 08:28 PM

hey guys. since this is really the only good place on the internet for VGMQ discussion, i figured i should go ahead and join.

the last update was pretty nice, and i got 6/7 of the new tracks. it was enough to bump me up to 1st, but i'm sure Draconis will put me back in my place as soon as he sees that there's an update

also, i had a question for you, Draconis
Quote:

I also have the mp3s for the old quiz
is there any way you could host those preview tracks from the old quiz, or send them to me or something? i'm compiling a personal VGMQ collection for myself, so i've been trying to collect/rip as many full tracks as possible, but i forgot what some of the old tracks were. if you could me hook me up with those mp3s, you would be even more of a hero than you already are

Duck King Mar 13, 2008 08:35 AM

Hello, megamatt. For what do we owe this honor? =)

Regarding the old quiz, I could upload them for you, no problem, if you have some space/ftp/something you could provide me with (just PM me the details).

Nice seeing you here. I hope you can stick around. Now, to tackle those recent tracks...

MrMonkeyMan Mar 13, 2008 09:12 AM

I could throw all the old samples on my site if you guys want.

I only got one track on this update :(

Dopefish Mar 13, 2008 09:12 AM

I missed this game so much, I'm glad it's back.

I'm going through some of them now, and I can say I was pleasantly surprised when I nailed #4352.

MrMonkeyMan Mar 13, 2008 10:01 AM

I'm not even going to wait for a response. I'll leave this up for a while.

Video Game Music Quiz 1st Edition

Got another song while I was doing all that too.

megamatt Mar 13, 2008 07:26 PM

thank you, good sir. this is much appreciated

TheKnightOfNee Mar 13, 2008 08:25 PM

I will also thank you for that. I only had unguessed tracks from the original quiz saved, but I of course had forgotten some I guessed before. I'm gonna go through and label all the ones I know so I don't forget again.

Sequel_Boy Mar 14, 2008 09:19 PM

Hey guys! Long time no see

It's really awesome that the quiz is back...really awesome that megamatt is here also!
Hopefully, the updates will come more frequently!!

As for the last update, I only got 3 ... and there awe two other that are driving me crazy...:(

TheKnightOfNee Jun 9, 2008 07:04 AM

It's been a couple months, but the site has finally been updated again. There are a whole load of new tracks up. A good number of them are from the old site, but there are some new ones too. He also says the site is nearly ready for user uploads, so hopefully that will come soon and isn't several months off still.

Duck King Jun 10, 2008 10:23 AM

Thanks for the heads up. User uploads? I've actually wanted that since the old quiz, so here's hoping.

MrMonkeyMan Jul 7, 2008 10:39 PM

Another 4 songs have been put up today. Nice to see we didn't have to wait 3 months again.

megamatt Jul 10, 2008 11:14 PM

another big update today. looks he's planning to get a ton of the old tracks back up, so now's your chance to get major points

Duck King Jul 18, 2008 08:56 AM

I think I did good with these last couple of updates. Although I would prefer brand new tracks, I'm not really complaining. Looks like DW's updating more frequently now, which is nice. And unlike the old site, there are some repeat games which could make things a little trickier. There were a few times when I thought "Didn't I guess that game before?" as I was going through the new ones.

megamatt Jul 20, 2008 03:18 AM

haha, yeah. i was really reluctant to answer the first repeat game i came across. i was afraid it was going to be a trick or something

TheKnightOfNee Sep 4, 2008 01:14 AM

He updated again recently, and he says all the old tracks should be up now. Which means the most recent update is around 100 songs, for those of you keeping track.

And hopefully, we get more new stuff in the future.

MrMonkeyMan Sep 4, 2008 01:22 AM

He says all the old songs are up, but he still has another 60 or 70 from the old quiz that haven't come up. Makes me wonder if he actually intends to put them up.

It was fun getting 60ish correct guesses in one day though.

Duck King Sep 4, 2008 09:47 AM

Been a while.

My score just jumped a whopping 110 points, haha, and I think I could add 3-4 to that later, but still... he keeps adding the ones I still don't know, and the few I found out the answers for after the quiz reset are nowhere to be found. Why? =/

MrMonkeyMan Dec 1, 2008 06:59 PM

There are 5 new songs today, and I know all of them =o

TheKnightOfNee Dec 2, 2008 11:06 PM

I sent the guy an e-mail so I can start adding tracks a couple days ago, I hope I get access soon. I'm so glad he finally set it so other people can help him with the running of the site, it'll get some much needed activity increase.

Duck King Dec 4, 2008 08:50 PM

HUEG update. Easy points. Stop slacking. Get to it.

Spoiler:
It's pretty cool for a change. =)

Rimo Dec 4, 2008 09:38 PM

Good to see you guys posting new tracks!

Guess I got rusty, parts of my VGM memory are starting to fade away, albeit I'm pretty sure I haven't heard many of these before. But I still got a few good answers, so hey, that's not too bad. Looking forward to the next update!

MrMonkeyMan Dec 4, 2008 10:03 PM

Draconis used one of my songs

And I only got 8 on my first listen, though a few others are very familiar. EDIT: Got 2 more.

Well, I've got about 100 songs all ready to upload, but I figure I'll stagger em, putting up just a few each weekend. So maybe tomorrow I'll throw a few more up there.

Duck King Dec 5, 2008 03:50 PM

Hah, my bad. Which one was it? Nice job getting 10 at least.

I just went through you guys' updates, and I didn't get a whole lot either. Good music though. Needs more retro. =)

And new tracks a weekend sounds great to me. I'll post a batch whenever there's a lull or something.

MrMonkeyMan Dec 5, 2008 04:05 PM

#61460

Exact song I planned to use, but that's cool. That song was my favourite part of the whole game.

EDIT
Oh, looks like someone else uploaded some songs today. THERE ARE SO MANY SONGS!

Kleenex Dec 5, 2008 04:25 PM

Hello!

EDIT: Nee tells me that one word posts are a bad idea, sorry. :(

MrMonkeyMan Dec 5, 2008 04:46 PM

Ah, hello! I got half your songs.

You guys are ruining my completion percentage. I was almost up to 66% and now I'm under 60%.

Ed Bellis Dec 6, 2008 08:21 PM

awww yeah vgmq brethren

Probably gonna add ten more or so sometime soon.

TheKnightOfNee Dec 7, 2008 06:18 PM

There, I finally got things going for me. Five more tracks uploaded. I would've put up more, but a certain Draconis took two other songs I had planned to put up.

MrMonkeyMan Dec 8, 2008 08:38 PM

Ed Bellis used another one of my songs, neat. #4119

Ed Bellis Dec 10, 2008 10:50 AM

Heh, nice. I'm not sure which number that is, though - what's the RID?

Duck King Dec 10, 2008 12:35 PM

Yeah, I think the numbers are unique for each user, so going by the RID would work.

By the way, I've asked DarkWolf about grading any pending guesses on our tracks at least. He said he will look into it sometime.

Nice tracks, Nee, Ed, everyone.

ACHTUNG:
Claim your tracks now or I'll take them =P

Yeah, someone needs to get around and grade my pending answer correct. :( (the theme is totally in that game too)

I thought about signing up to do tracks but I'd probably just end up doing one batch and never getting around to another one.

TheKnightOfNee Dec 10, 2008 07:39 PM

It would be nice to be able to grade what we put up.

I've been working on making more, I'm just going to put up a few at a time so I don't run through my resources right away. Naturally, I want to put up as much as I can, but we need to leave ourselves some room to work with in the future too.

Kleenex Dec 11, 2008 07:21 PM

I was thinking that maybe we could come up come kind of schedule so we don't all put up tracks on the same day. Just to space things out a bit. I know I was planning on putting up a few every Friday, but I guess it depends on what days are best for everyone.

Duck King Dec 16, 2008 10:04 AM

I suppose everyone will find their own rhythm with updating, like some who are going by the weekends. Though if you really want to work out a schedule, I wouldn't mind.

There are some new tracks, by the way. Have fun!

Duck King Jan 4, 2009 07:49 AM

Thanks to DarkWolf, each of us can now grade all pending answers for their respective tracks. I just went through all of mine, and they were a good few. And there was this one guy you'll love to hate. I also expect a few incorrect ones now. :(

Ed took 457 right from under my nose. I had that exact one prepared for my next batch, which should be up soonish. Nice work.

TheKnightOfNee Jan 5, 2009 05:27 AM

Oh man, grading through these is already the best part about this. It's really interesting to see what some people put when they're wrong. One in particular really made me laugh. I'd post it here, but then that would giving away the answer, and I can't do that.

I've been sitting on a few songs for a little while now, but haven't uploaded them yet. It's mostly because I discovered one of the songs comes from a game that has a billion names and I don't want to put them all in. But now that have grading abilities, that should make things easier.

MrMonkeyMan Jan 5, 2009 03:57 PM

Lokishade is one strange fellow. He must just put in anything when he doesn't know the answer. Some of his guesses are pretty out there.

Video Game Music Quiz

Hopefully I'll upload another batch this weekend.

Exactly.

Well, I uploaded the few tracks I had done a while back (after some adjustments) and I see that Nee updated too. More tracks for you guys.
