Are there gangs in your area?

The last time I heard anything about gangs was freshman year of high school and that was 7 years ago. And today was the first time I heard someone talk about a gang. Actually, he claimed to be a gang member.. he's the story:

I live in an urban city and the neighborhood is fairly quiet. Maybe a crime chase once or twice since the past 5 years. But today on my way home from classes a guy got on the bus. There were about 10 people on the bus so there was plenty of room but he sits next to me and starts talking to me while nudging me lightly. ["WTF is this guy doing? He has to sit next to me on the bus when there's so much room? and why is he bumping me?" God damn gay psycho] I was carrying my textbooks all day so I didn't feel like changing my seat. My stop was about 15 blocks so I decided to wait it out. Anyway, he asked me if I attended a certain high school. I told him, "No". Then he asked a high schooler sitting near by. He must've asked the question to us about 4 times. Then goes to say he has "beef" with kids from that school. [beef, now I haven't heard that term in years. Do high schoolers still use that term?] Anyhow, he then says he's from the bloods crypts or something like that. I asked him to repeat what he said because he was speaking "gangster" or "thugish" basically it was improper english. He asks me if I want to join.. I reply, "No.." He goes on talking about the benefit [that's right, not plural.. singular] if I join. He said I'd get a red car and then holds out one hand and pretends to drive. Then he repeats the same thing saying I'll get a red car... and does the one hand driving thing.. again.... [Hmmm... I should pretend that I didn't know english. He looks like an idiot and I don't want to hear him talk to me.] Next he talks to the high schooler who is trying his best to ignore him. The high school kid, about 14 or 15 considering the time he got out of school and his looks, was getting spooked so he stood up and walked towards the front of the bus where the driver was. The "gang" member then looked at me and asked me if I wanted to rob him. "You and me, we can take him on." [Ok, if he was in a gang I don't think he would've asked me for assistance.] I decline his offer and he starts asking me why and then asks me if I am a college student. I tell him that I am. Then he says how he's going to Iraq next year for the war and after that he's coming back and going to Harvard. [Yeah.... Harvard..... you..... try picture books first you moron!] He then gets off the bus and thinks we're "cool"... Ok, so he isn't in a gang, just a weird ass but this really did happen... I wish I had some better form of entertainment on the way home.

So this...... is a gang???. I think.. in my area... anyone else??
If you have any stories feel free to post and also tell what kind of area you live in

Jiraiya Mar 10, 2006 08:06 PM

Of course there are going to be gangs just about everywhere. I live in a hick town and we have kids in my high school saying they are in the Crips, not sure if its true but they have the tattoos to say they are in so I wouldnt doubt it. Personally I've never had trouble for a gang, Im not in one either.

Paco Mar 10, 2006 08:23 PM

Living in Central California gangs are pretty common. When I first came to the states in 1988 they were fucking rampant and you always heard gunshots at night. Now if I hear a gunshot it's not surprising, but it's far from a normal occurrence. I have had more than a few friends killed in gang-related incidents and even though a few of them probably had it coming, I can honestly say a couple of them didn't deserve it. :(

I seriously have NO respect for these "thugs" walking around the street thinking they're "hard". In the end, they're all a discount car wash at best.

Gechmir Mar 10, 2006 08:25 PM

NO WAY. They all get red cars? Why didn't you join?!

He must've been important because he didn't have a red car -- he had a public bus!

Paco Mar 10, 2006 08:29 PM

They don't get red cars here. I live in a town called Ivanhoe which is considered "south-sider" territory and the color here is blue.

It's like a demographical PAINT BY NUMBERS!

They have a fashion sense too! Now THAT'S gangsta! :tpg:

PiccoloNamek Mar 10, 2006 08:33 PM

If by gangs you mean groups of roving, drunken rednecks, then yes, there are gangs.

Elcee Mar 10, 2006 08:37 PM

Some punk mother fuckers burglarized my appartment in San Antonio about a month and a half ago. Since moving back to SoCal, I've learned that it was a bitch wannabe Esse that lived right across from me. I wonder what his dumb ass plans to do with all my electric guitars now that I've filed all the serial numbers with the local police. He stole my roommate's Xbox and PS2, but whatever.

Now I'm home sweet home. Land of the Emo Faddists. Nothing to worry about except for confusing boys with girls when I look at them from behind.

South side! heh cholos crack me up!

I'm sure there are gangs around Phoenix and wanna be gangstas. It doesn't bother me and I've never been asked to join or anything. I must be too white.

makura Mar 10, 2006 08:42 PM

The benefit is only having a red car? Ask him if you can get loaded with some 'bling bling' and a mouthful of silver and gold teeth, then he has a deal.

Where do you live anyways?

wvlfpvp Mar 10, 2006 09:03 PM

For some reason, my mind translated the name of this topic to "do you have stairs in your house?"

What the hell is wrong with me?

Oh, and I'm pretty sure there's gangs, what with I live in Memphis and all.

In the Northwest (Oregon specifically), gangs aren't all that common. I have yet to see a gang in my city (the crime rate is really low overall).

Yeah, I used to live in Medford in 1998. During my one year stay there I don't think I saw a SINGLE gang member or even someone who would look plausible enough to pass for one. I miss Oregon. :(

J-Man Mar 10, 2006 09:38 PM

I live in a small town in Northwest Canada and there are still gangs. There is only one real group large enough to really be considered a gang, and that's the skinheads who drive the hueg trucks around the elementary school and tear up the field, then proceed to dump their empty beer cans on the playground and drive away.

Lady Miyomi Mar 10, 2006 10:12 PM

There's aspiring gangbangers running around my neighborhood. They don't really do too much like they used when I first moved here. They would block up the streets either standing out in the street or all their cars in the street. People couldn't drive in and out for awhile.

One of the gangs thought it was funny to spray paint crap on the side of one of the buildings. It read "KILL COPS". Of course the police weren't happy about that...

subferno Mar 10, 2006 10:23 PM

There are no gangs where I live. But where I use to work, it is littered with them. It freaks me out going to work everyday.

yeah, I forgot to say that he didn't pay his fair. He most likely lied to the driver and said he was a high school student and lost his card.

I told my sister and she couldn't stop laughing. We don't know much about those gangs but she told me that they're black people gangs but the dude wasn't black. I have no clue what nationality he is but he has light skin and is most surely not black. Another thing I forgot about the bloods gang is they wear red... I think the collar of his shirt was red... but that's about it... way to represent!! Another funny thing was he was jumping roles. First he says he's a thug, then he's gonna do army and then go to Harvard. I live in New York btw.

alkaline Mar 10, 2006 10:27 PM

No, we just have a bunch of white boys who think they're in a gang. I live in a pretty yuppish area, so basically it's a bunch of stupid 16 year olds who's parents didn't give them enough attention but enough cash to get a cell phone and 50 Cent albums.

One night they actually had a rumble! An honest to god rumble! Kids were running across the street, screaming, causing a disturbance. Now, about 4 cops live an my block alone. So this isn't the best place to do this.

So one of them chases another down the street screaming "YEAH! YEAH! WEST OAKLAND BITCH!" This is where I poke my head out the window to see what kind of hilarious cracker is screaming this nonsense.

Out comes one of the cops on my street -- a woman, who stomps out, takes him down and slaps him against the cement. SHE patrols West Oakland. If this kid walked into Oakland, he'd get shot. A lollercoaster of crying ensues and we haven't had anything like that happen again.

One thing that has changed since 1998 is the school budgets have gone to hell. Luckily the Beaverton School District (which I used to go to) has no real funding problem. Funny thing is Beaverton has 80,000 people and the closest thing I see to gang activity here is graffiti on the buses coming from Portland.

Chaotic Mar 10, 2006 11:10 PM

Pssh... My area is too safe to have gangs... We don't even have any registered sex offenders. Either way, all we have in my area are those fake gangstas that black people (not all, but some) fall under the sterotype on from the rap videos.

You mean those 20somethings that have a modded car and a stereo you can hear from a mile away? I absolutely loathe people who drive those cars and blare their crappy taste in music.

Infernal Monkey Mar 10, 2006 11:33 PM

Oh. We have gangs. Gangs of druggies, that approach you. IN GANGS. "Ay mate got a fuckin' dollar?" "No, I do not have a fucking dollar for you to borrow!" then they'll pick at the fungus that's grown all over their faces for OD'ing in the gutter for two weeks. Don't mess with the chick in the cowboy hat, she'll tell you off. She lusts. For that dollar. Gangs of generic western suburb, they'll get you!

The only thing you need to be sorry for is Michael Moore. Not his movies, just him.

I am indeed sorry for him. :(
Although I am not at all responsible for him in the least bit.

Sol Mar 11, 2006 12:07 AM

I used to think that there weren't any gangs here in northern Washinton, but a month or so ago the police broke up a decent sized meth-ring in my town. Besides that its just the usual number of hoodlums causing vandalism and theft. Surprisingly enough, there are a few wannabe hoods driving lowriders and thumping rap, trying to look the part. Seeing them side by side a truck full of hay and country hicks makes me laugh every time.

My old hometown in SoCal had a gang, but I swear it was just a bunch of thirteen year old kids with spraypaint cans. The only gang trouble we had was them traveling through town to get from LA to Ventura or Santa Barbara on a drug run.

Chaco Mar 11, 2006 12:11 AM

Gangs? REAL gangs? The real gang members if their are any, I don't see.

The fake gang members? Oh yeah, they're plentiful around here. I've been asked to join PROBABLY about three or four 'gangs' in the past couple of weeks. It's a "Gang War".

Go up to the movie theatre by my house. Wow, Is it...Thug. I'll never forget the time a kid drove by (Possibly even just rolling, No more than 5 Miles an hour) playing "Gangsta's Paradise". I swear to god he head checked me in slow motion. The whole moment just went in slow motion.

Yeah, Lowes Cinaxplex. Stony Brook, New York. Represent. They gots Bloods, Crips, Purple Panthers, Pink Pathers, Green Goblins, Yellow Bellys...I can go on and on. Either way, these kids are just punks. It's pretty sad how one on one nearly everyone of them are overly friendly and almost cool people but when they group together the shit they do together is just pathetic.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Mar 11, 2006 12:56 AM

Haha. Kids in my high school think that they're Crips and Bloods, but everyone knows they're just a bunch of punk kids. They may wear the red and blue, but they aren't the real thing.

Paco Mar 11, 2006 02:05 AM

NONE of them are the real thing, Capo. I have yet to meet anyone under the age of 35 who is a REAL Crip or Blood. It's like everyone splits off into their own little conclaves and give their respective gang some fucking ridiculous name like "Midget Locos", "South Side Kings" or "Latin Timez Playboyz".

Listen wetback... You're not a "loco", you're not a "playboy" and you sure as hell don't have any motherfucking "king" in you. Quit being a pretentious excuse for a criminal and get a REAL criminal job. Like becoming an altar boy just to steal church funds.

Myst' Mar 11, 2006 07:01 AM

There are plenty of gangs at my place...
Well you cant really call them gangs.

In Fact, its just a group of 20 11-year olds who like running around like 50 Cent and acting all gangster and stuff..
Ewww ><

grodiens Mar 11, 2006 10:50 AM

I don't live in Rio de Janeiro, but I was many times in Rio and I know that it is really terrible. The gangs have heavy weapons that are better that the police. Who saw "City of God" knows about what I am speaking.

xSummonerYUnax Mar 11, 2006 11:26 AM

There are plenty of gangs here in NY although they only show their faces once in awhile...and when they do, they have this constant urge to provoke other gangs into a fight in public. My friend nearly got shot for stepping into a store to buy a bottle of water at the wrong time.

riceonfriday Mar 11, 2006 12:50 PM

Well here in San Bernardino, CA we get alot of "gangsters" since we're next door to Los Angeles. The housing is dirt cheap compared to LA so people move out here; another reason is that parents want to get their kids away from their gangster friends in LA. Then those people who were affiliated with gangs bring their friends out here, and soon enough they start recruiting the kids out here.

My family was fed up with having to bar our windows in doors so we moved to the other side of town which is [or WAS] a nice suburban community. Then it was like the ghetto started creeping it's way across town. In the seven years I've been here, I've noticed alot more "thugs" and criminal activity increase every year.

In fact just the other day there was an incident in which two black high schoolers were walking home from church when they were encircled by an asian gang (who claimed to be blood) and then proceeded into beating the two up pretty badly. This church is just 4-5 houses down from me, and our community has been pretty upset by this. The sherriff has been patrolling the area for the past couple of days.

Other than that, this year the only gangsters I've seen where the 12 year olds who stashed their bikes on my lawn. When they came by to get them, my dad and I were outside drinkin' some beers and they asked us "Where the fuck are our bikes??" I told them I took it to the dump.

Man_of_Pie Mar 11, 2006 02:40 PM

Oh man there's 1 gang in my area these guys are a joke. Here's how it goes. I live in Boca Raton, Florida. There's more old people here than anything and all they do is play golf and tennis it's pretty much a giant retirement community. But there's this gang of kids most of em go to my school they leave really shitty graffiti all over the place and I guess that's about all they do besides cheating at tennis games and j-walking. They call themselves the Palmetto Pines Playas and I'd be totally embarassed to the point where I'd have to commit suicide if these guys jumped me because they're all overweight, their rich as hell and their parents buy them expensive cars, and they suck at life.

Acro-nym Mar 11, 2006 05:41 PM

There are gangs nearby. In Charlotte, I heard that gangs had affected the teaching ability and respectibility of the schools in the area by being troublesome. They get into fights. They threaten teachers. They deface the schools. I'm just glad I like forty-five minutes away from all that.

knkwzrd Mar 11, 2006 11:23 PM

There are one or two well known local gangs here, consisting almost entirely of prick kids jacking minivans. The only real organized crime in the city is the Hell's Angels, and they just had a major bust.

Fatt Mar 14, 2006 07:57 PM

Being from Chicago, the two biggest gangs are Gangster Disciples, and Gangster Disciple Killers. The most organized crime syndicate would be found in Chinatown, but only their own members know what their name is and what they represent. The only local gang I know of would be 1UP, which was a compilation of all the local gangs joining together (Lost Boys, WTA, etc.), and they were all about drug trafficking more than any other crime.

Honestly, these days I see a lot more thugs than organized gangs.

Soluzar Mar 14, 2006 08:06 PM

Nothing so organised as gangs. We get groups of early teens and up roaming the streets looking for trouble, but I don't think they are organised like American street gangs. The area I live in is very quiet, and even though there's a moderate amount of crime, it's not the street crime type.

Neogin Mar 14, 2006 08:22 PM

Real Gangs? In New Jersey? Haha, please.

Erm, no, we don't have any. If anything, we have "gangstas."

JackTheRipper Mar 14, 2006 09:05 PM

Ha. The only things in my area are whites (mostly Jewish). I don't think Jews are capable of forming gangs, but the few other people we have aren't in gangs either.

You forgot to mention all the aboriginal gangs here. Mind you, they mostly just back the Angels but they're a big part of their activity here. A few years back there was a huge problem with drive by shootings. I think there were like 8 in the course of two months, which is pretty bad for Winnipeg, despite it's title as murder captiol of Canada.

Gangs are pretty much everywhere in America. However most of the thuggish gangsta gangs tend to be located in the bigger cities. Though here in KS they have taken up residence in Dodge City for some reason.

Excuse me. Benjamin Hymen Siegelbaum was one of the most prolific gangsters of all time.

I poked it and it made a sad sound Mar 14, 2006 11:27 PM

Yea, we have the ACADEMIC GANSTERS up in here.

Seriously though, the only thing we have even mildly close to "real" gansters are the Russians in town. From what I hear, they run a mean mob in town. If theres a car accident involved one of them, they send "reps" to the scene to be sure everything goes smooth.

Its mostly because the smalltown people out here are really ignorant and are really MEAN to the Russians for no good reason. We had show up at the high school a few years ago because the American kids fucking hate the Russians because, you know, stupid.

Dude is right. In Seattle, you have the Microsoft and the Google gangs. Although they run like gangs, they really don't commit crimes per say, but they do have significant turf representation. If you wear Google merchandise in Microsoft territory, you will get confronted. I had to laugh real hard the first time I heard about this, but Microsoft college kids really take pride in their stuff.
