Well, I'll start nominating before nothing else:

Album: Drummania 3 & Guitar Freaks 4
Artist: Motoaki Furukawa
Title: Captain's Voyage (long version)
Track: 29
Disc 1 of 1
Sources: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motoaki_Furukawa for the composer, and http://chudahs-corner.com/soundtrack...talog=KMCA-111 for the rest of the album. I had a more elegant source some time ago, but I lost it with the change of computer.

EDIT: File uploaded to the server.

IT APPEARS LIKE I MIGHT HAVE TO USE OVERLY EMPHASIZED TEXT EVERY OTHER WEEK?

It's cool that my nominations come up a lot faster, because I have bucketloads of tracks to force-feed you people, but I do kinda miss the days when we had way more nominators than voters. :(

OBJECTION!

No, not really. I've just been wanting to do that to the next Gyakuten Saiban nomination for a while now. :)

Chaos Legion Original Soundtrack - I can hear the shriek (Stage ~Cave~)
The main problem I have with this song is that the voice isn't loud enough. I understand that the song is interesting because fo the "shriek" in the background, so the voice really has to stand out. Unfortunately, the bass becomes a bit too obvious for me, and that last final change in bass rhythm at the end of the song is not enough to secure a vote for me.

HALO 2 Original Soundtrack and New Music Vol. 1 - 2nd Movement of the Odyssey
I dont think Incubus for me truly qualifies as a game track. But besides this, I really feel that the track is boring without anything that is unique about it. I don't find the jam very interesting, so it's also not worth a high level vote for this song.

Mr. Bones Soundtrack - In This World
It's definitely somewhat interesting of a piece, but I'm still feeling that something could be added to the main vocal melody. The solo is something that is awesome all by itself, however.

Phalanx - The Enforce Fighter A-144 (SNES Game Rip) - Under Water (Stage 2)
I kind of like the melody, it continues to change, but stays predictable enough to prevent the song from being annoying. I still feel that there'just something small that's missing, but I can't exactly say what at this point.

Republic - The Revolution Original Soundtrack - Blood Brother
I'm almost always attracted to romantic songs, and I feel that Blood Brother definitely has some romantic qualities in it. Unfortunately, for me this song is really slow. I understand that slow songs can be good, but the melody is not very unique.

Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children Perfect Sound Tracks - Unpublished Tune (Arrange Ver.)
I picked this song because it really became stuck in my head. It's a perfect addicting melody, which continues to build on through sequences and therefore never becomes completely boring. Throughout the song, there's no completely equal repetition (although there's sequencing), which is something that makes it even better. I also really like the part at around 1:32 which continues to bridge toward the end.

STELLA DEUS BGM ReArrange Album - Planet She
It's another theme that I really like. It's jazzy, but also has a melody thats definitely my taste. Although theres a few more themes that I like better in the ReArrange Album than Planet She, this is also really good. The melody that builds at around 0:45 is really nice, along with the buildup that comes later. Good piano song.

Under Defeat -Extended Tracks- - tears which died
This is also a pretty good song. For the first 6 seconds, I thought it might be too boring and slow, but when the melody really starts, it attracts me pretty fast. That's of course expected from Shinji Hosoe.

Overall, the choices for top three were ridiculously easy for me:

3pt: Unpublished Tune (Arrange Ver.)
2pt: tears which died
1pt: Planet She

NOMINATION:

Sorry... a bit more militaristic of a song this time for those of you who don't like it.

By the way, I also wanted to mention that my nom is missing an 's' at the end .

Hahaha, awesome. Second week in a row someone's nominated the Genesis version of a track from my BSC nomination list that I also planned to nominate an arrangement of in the future!

orion_mk3 Nov 28, 2006 05:17 PM

Chaos Legion Original Soundtrack - I can hear the shriek (Stage ~Cave~) I'm liking this Chaos Legion soundtrack, at least from what I've heard. This track is a nice meld of hardcore techno with a beautiful Middle Eastern vocal, and it does both parts well. The techno is varied enough that it doesn't become boring, and the vocals provide much-needed melody and atmosphere.

HALO 2 Original Soundtrack and New Music Vol. 1 - 2nd Movement of the Odyssey I agree with arch_slayer that this really shouldn't be here; frankly, I think we at least needed a poll to determine its eligibility, since I wasn't the only one opposed. I'd probably be more inclined to be forgiving if the tune was good, but frankly I don't like Incubus when they have lyrics; the underachieving grunge here couldn't be more inappropriate for the world of Halo.

Mr. Bones Soundtrack - In This World I like the bluesy opening, though the tune gets rather bland when the lyrics kick in, even though they're not bad as VGM lyrics go.

Phalanx - The Enforce Fighter A-144 (SNES Game Rip) - Under Water (Stage 2) Rather bouncy for a shooter, though not bad. It didn't really stick with me, though; I didn't even realize that it had stopped playing the first few times I listened.

Republic - The Revolution Original Soundtrack - Blood Brother A nice little operetta-style track, something that doesn't turn up much in SoTW. Very Eastern European sounding, and if it's a little slow in execution the song more than makes up for it in atmosphere.

Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children Perfect Sound Tracks - Unpublished Tune (Arrange Ver.) Some very good parts where the synth melody does its thing, and some dreadful guitar noodling to balance the equation. Still, more good than bad.

STELLA DEUS BGM ReArrange Album - Planet She My nom. A rearrangement of "Heroine's Theme" (which is a terrific song in and of itself) for piano, the tune takes the original melody and runs with it, jazzing up the transitions with more of the semi-improvisational flair that I loved in the Sims Build Mode 3.

Under Defeat -Extended Tracks- - tears which died Similar to Unpublished Tune, wih a nicer synth melody and even worse noodling. The latter half of the track completely degenerates into guitar spaghetti, and the tune doesn't earn its running time.

Another fairly good week; we seem to be having something of a quality run here at SoTW.

The Point Spread
Stella Deus - 3 pts.
Chaos Legion - 1 pt.
Republic: The Revolution - 1 pt.
Shiny Megaman Tinsel - 1 pt.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Nov 28, 2006 06:04 PM

Quick comments; I'm a little drowsy from a long day of school and bowling practice.

Chaos Legion OST - CHz warned us that it was pretty odd. It's another one of his "mixed-bag" noms, in that there are some elements that I hate, and others that I totally dig. Nice beat, annoying voice.

HALOL 2 - Seven and a half minutes of Incubus? ... Pass.

Mr Bones OST - My nomination. I have better success with up-tempo tracks, it seems, but I couldn't resist nominating this just to prove a point: there are a few vocal tracks in VGM that totally rock. Some intense guitar work, a dark, bluesy feel and some rather interesting lyrics make this song greatly satisfying for me.
Blues rock might not be for everyone, especially the SotW crowd, but you gotta admit that, for a vocal track, "In This World" pretty much does everything right.

Phalanx - Not too bad for a chiptune, but not among the most impressive either. The fact that it's cheerful saves it from being wholly forgettable.

Republic - The Revolution OST - This is more melancholy than I can tolerate. Hell, this is practically a dirge. Compositionally, it's fine, but the mood isn't my cup of tea.

Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children - Not too bad. I really don't have much else to say. I like it, but it's not making me bolt upright.

Stella Deus - Nice stuff. I enjoy these kind of flowing piano tracks a lot. I'd like for my own nomination to do well, but I can foresee this winning.

Under Defeat - Ordinarily, I'd like this a lot more, I think. But I'm kinda tired out right now, and the distortion guitar's grating on me somewhat. But this one's still good - don't get me wrong. I remember enjoying it yesterday, so I'm pretty sure it's just the fatigue talking.

FINAL TALLY:

Three Point Landing: Mr. Bones Soundtrack - In This World
Two Point Conversion: STELLA DEUS BGM ReArrange Album - Planet She
One Point Perspective: Under Defeat -Extended Tracks- - tears which died

Can't find that big noms list, so I'l nomjnate this even though it may have also been before. Journey to Silius and Batman both (I believe) had their first level themes place. Here's another awesome Sunsoft first level theme.

Game: Blaster Master
Song: Level 1
Anything else about it: I don't know.

Darkcomet72 Nov 28, 2006 09:40 PM

This week is amazing. Even the weakest track (Unpublished Tune) redeemed itself with a melody that reminds me of that robot flying thingy from Super Ninja Boy of all things. I especially love how there's something for everyone.

Expect some nice comments from me later. Point spreading is going to be tough.

Drakken Nov 28, 2006 11:22 PM

K, I have to get this off my chest...

It seems some people are opposed to / put off by my nomination. I want to at least give an explanation for it. Me nominating a song that doesn't even appear in a game seems totally hypocritical, and I never would have thought about doing it a few months back. I was always one to say that only songs appearing in games should be allowed in SotW (no non-game music by vgm composers), and I even went so far as to say arranged versions shouldn't be allowed, at one point, iirc. For my last nom. I loosened up a bit and chose an arranged version of a Genesis track (after much deliberation). This time, I guess I threw away my own rules, simply because I love this song. It's not often people hear this kind of weird progressive rock type stuff, and I wanted to get this out there. Though it didn't appear in the game, it's on the official soundtrack and was inspired by the game, according to one of the Incubus guys. And most people haven't heard the non-Marty tracks on the OST, from what I can tell. orion's the only one who really raised an objection about it. So, it met SotW's eligibility requirements, even though it's not something I'd usually nominate, like I said.

I know Incubus is a regular band, which may certainly be a negative for some people, but I ask that you at least give it a shot, and judge based on the song itself rather than your feelings about Halo or Incubus. I don't expect a lot of people to love it, as prog rock tends to be too out there for most people, but if at least some people dig it, I'll be happy.

THE POWER OF WATER Nov 28, 2006 11:49 PM

Normally I wait until I actually vote to make comments about what I think about the week as a whole, but Draconis and Darkcomet72's capsule summaries are spurring me to also register my opinion that this week is some pretty hot stuff. Any one of these songs would've gotten at least one point from me last week.

And 0:36-0:50 in Under Water might be the best thing I've ever heard in VGM.

TheKnightOfNee Nov 29, 2006 12:01 AM

I've listened to four tracks so far, and I'm quite impressed with them. Then I look through the topic, and so far, those are the ones getting the least votes. I'll agree with CHz and say this is looking to be a wonderful week.

Shaolin Samurai Nov 29, 2006 12:45 AM

Definitely an upper tier week.

2 points: STELLA DEUS BGM ReArrange Album - Planet She
2 points: Chaos Legion Original Soundtrack - I can hear the shriek (Stage ~Cave~)
1 point: Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children Perfect Sound Tracks - Unpublished Tune (Arrange Ver.)
1 point: Under Defeat -Extended Tracks- - tears which died

On a nom-related note, how would you gents feel about a track from the Devil May Cry 3 OST?

arch_slayer Nov 29, 2006 02:14 AM

Works for me, DMC is one of the osts I don't always listen to, even though I've heard a few songs.

THE POWER OF WATER Nov 29, 2006 02:29 AM

I'm fine with DMC3, or any DMC, for that matter. I've only heard a couple of Devil May Cry tracks from things like the BSC.

I'm ambivalent, but SoTW is moving in that direction, so why fight it?

Look for my nomination from Final Fantasy VII soon :)

Drakken Nov 29, 2006 12:21 PM

I'd have to say no to KyleDunamis' Blaster Master nomination. The level 1 music is one of the most well-known chiptunes there is.

As for DMC, I'm not very familiar with its music, though I've heard 2 or 3 songs from BSC. Guess it's not a huge deal either way to me.

On to the voting...

2 pts. - 2nd Movement of the Odyssey - Honestly, I love this song. It's a brilliant work. The beauty of progressive rock is that it allows for a lot of creativity and always remains interesting throughout, because it's well, progressive. It's not just a verse & chorus repeated or a simple melody looped. It's different from beginning to end. This one has lots of funky rhythms and syncopation, which make me dig it even more. I can really get into it.

I find it funny that archslayer says there's nothing unique about it (when it's way more unique than the standard SotW fare). EDIT: Ah, brilliant; he's the one who nominated Unpublished Tune. Kind of ironic, considering that track's generic-ness.

And grunge, orion? Whatever. I hope people are actually listening through the whole thing and giving it a chance, not judging based on predispositions about Incubus or Halo. Also, it's worth noting that progressive rock is generally more rewarding the more you listen to and "know" a piece. Upon first listen, it might sound disjointed or jarring; I certainly wasn't thrilled with it upon my first listen. Some people might not be willing to give it more one listen, though, and I understand that. If at least a few people like it, I'll be happy.

2 pts. - Planet She - This is a delightful piano piece. Kudos to orion for nominating it. I should probably check out the rest of this album.

1 pt. - In This World - Heh, a vg tune with decent lyrics. Kind of cool.

1 pt. - tears which died

I can hear the shriek is decent/interesting, but it's not one of my favorite Chaos Legion tracks. Under Water is a nice bouncy tune and warranted consideration for a point. Blood Brothers also was close.

Pretty good week, though Planet She is probably the only song here I'll listen to after this week (besides my nom). I had to think about which tracks to assign 1 point to.

I think you're right--"grunge" probably wasn't the best word. I'm terrible with subgenre names, especially ones I'm not familiar with.

I believe Vergil Battle 1 and 3 were in BSC, so we may as well complete the set here.

Drakken Nov 29, 2006 06:43 PM

...that was probably said in a silly way, but huh? I think the fact that we've already heard those other two Vergil Battle themes changes things. It's not a huge deal, but it would at least be nice to change things up.

Agree/disagree?

Darkcomet72 Nov 29, 2006 06:58 PM

I'm pretty sure Vergil Battle 1 was never nominated for anything, actually. I'm sure it's not in BSC 06 and 05.

Depends. How similar are the Vergil Battle themes? I've only heard VB3 from the BSC.

Shaolin Samurai Nov 29, 2006 10:25 PM

Yeah wasn't sure about Vergil Battle 1 - I thought it might it have been there from a search when people mentioned Vergil Battle (with no number).

Sylistically, Vergil Battle 2 is radically different from Vergil Battle 3. It is much less orchestral and features a prominent drumline and guitar riff.

Drakken Nov 30, 2006 12:03 AM

If it's stylistically different, then that's ok, I guess.

I've decided on my next nom:

Album: Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows (rip by Kuttlas)
Track: Unknown 14
Composer: Alexander Brandon
Track #: 3.29
Year: 2005
Catalog #: N/A
Notes: A haunting piano + solo voice melody. One of a few potential noms from Gauntlet: SS.

arch_slayer Nov 30, 2006 01:40 AM

Technically, I think Vergil Battle 1 and 2 are stylistically the same, but use different instruments (which have a similar synth taste) and have totally different melodies ;)

Very aggressive piece in my opinion though... interesting pick...

TheKnightOfNee Nov 30, 2006 07:13 AM

Points assigning time! This is going to be tough though, I enjoyed everything this week had to offer.

Chaos Legion Original Soundtrack - I can hear the shriek (Stage ~Cave~) - Kind of an oddball crazy song. I have no problem with the voices in the song, though they aren't outstanding. There are a lot of sounds all combining together, but they work well and make this sound good.

HALO 2 Original Soundtrack and New Music Vol. 1 - 2nd Movement of the Odyssey - I'm one of the people that thinks something from the Halo 2 soundtrack is too mainstream for this, but it's in, and I haven't heard it, so I'll give it a fair shot. I like the first minute and half or so, where the song is a slow rock with a little distortion on the guitars. The next three minutes I could do without. After 4:30, it gets a little better, but nothing special. I would've liked it plenty more had they stuck with the style from the beginning.

Mr. Bones Soundtrack - In This World - A song with lyrics I can understand! (This is quite a rarity for me.) That said, I quite enjoyed the lyrics. The blues style is also very well done.

Phalanx - The Enforce Fighter A-144 (SNES Game Rip) - Under Water (Stage 2) - A bouncy tune that didn't really stick with the first listen. Further listens, I found myself humming along with it and I got it stuck in my head, and I've been liking it more with more listens.

Republic - The Revolution Original Soundtrack - Blood Brother - I can definitely feel the emotion in this. A powerful voice with moving strings. Beautiful stuff.

Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children Perfect Sound Tracks - Unpublished Tune (Arrange Ver.) - Kind of like tears which died, only I didn't enjoy the main melody quite as much.

STELLA DEUS BGM ReArrange Album - Planet She - A nice piano song. I can't really describe this without saying anything that's already been said. However, after giving this an initial couple listens, I went and left it on for the next 20 minutes.

Under Defeat -Extended Tracks- - tears which died - Most of it is typical Shinji Hosoe sounds, which I tend to enjoy. Reminds me a little bit of some of the better Mega Man X series music. It does resort to guitar noodling a bit too much, though.

Picking a favorite out of all these is impossible. Gonna have to go with the spread points this week, and unfortunately hand out two snubs.

1 point to:
Chaos Legion Original Soundtrack - I can hear the shriek (Stage ~Cave~)
Mr. Bones Soundtrack - In This World
Phalanx - The Enforce Fighter A-144 (SNES Game Rip) - Under Water (Stage 2)
Republic - The Revolution Original Soundtrack - Blood Brother
STELLA DEUS BGM ReArrange Album - Planet She
Under Defeat -Extended Tracks- - tears which died

EliJaH Nov 30, 2006 08:30 PM

Week 78

Hmm, pretty good week.

I can hear the shriek (Stage ~Cave~) <Hideyuki Fukasawa>
Interesting song, I like the combination of styles and instruments. The overall melody was decent, percussion was decent. The voices were my favorite part of the song, followed by the strings at times. Decent song.

2nd Movement of the Odyssey <Incubus>
Hmm, it's almost like a few separate remixes put together (is it?). I have a natural bias against Halo in general (all those halo-fans at school sometimes bug me). I'll try and give this a fair try at points. I like some of the melodies, some I don't care for. I like it better than the Halo OST (the one you hear in the game(s)>.>). It did get kind of boring at times, oh well, fun song to listen to.

In This World <Ronnie Montrose, Fitz Houston>
Heh, interesting lyrics. Good composition, nothing super great though. Not much to say about this song. It doesn't sound like it would be from a video game. Good overall.

Under Water (Stage 2) <S. Yamaguchi>
At first I didn't like the song, but I'm starting to like it a little more. Average chip tune (right term?), anyways, fun melody.

Blood Brothers <James Hannigan>
Hmmm, pretty good song. Very slow, but that fits the style perfectly. Sounds like a song that would be in a Hollywood movie. I've never heard of the game it's from "Republic: The Revolution". A little more development would have made the song more enjoyable. But that's just my taste.

Unpublished Tune (Arrange Ver.) <Shin Kouno, Achilles C. Damigos>
My least favorite at first, but it actually isn't so bad, on par with most of the other songs. I like the melody, even though it is SLIGHTLY redundant. I've liked most of the Shin Megami Tensei (recent ones) series' soundtrack.

Planet She <Mitsuhiro Kaneda>
I was tempted to get this game a while back, but my bank account denied that, heh. Sounds like the soundtrack wasn't that bad. This song is well put together, the name though, "Planet She", I was expecting a more epic kind of song.

tears which died <Shinji Hosoe>
On par with the Shin Megami Tensei song. It has an easily enjoyable melody, easily remembered too. Interesting name, it brings a little bit more depth to the song. Good week (pretty even too).

~~~POINTS~~~
(One point to each)
tears which died 1 pt.
Unpublished Tune 1 pt.
Planet She 1 pt.
In This World 1 pt.
2nd Movement of the Odyssey 1 pt.
I can hear the shriek 1 pt.
~~~NOMINATION~~~
Album: UNLIMITED: SaGa Original Soundtrack
Composers: Masashi Hamauzu
Title: Battle Theme I
Track: 6
Disc: 1 (of 2)
Catalog number: SSCX-10078~9
Source: chudahs-corner.com/soundtracks/index.php?catalog=SSCX-10078%7E9

I hope this isn't to mainstream. It IS by Hamauzu, but I find USaga pretty obscure (I could be wrong). I found one previous nom. from USaga (in the best song contest), but I didn't find this particular song, so... Anyways, feel free to veto my nomination.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Nov 30, 2006 09:09 PM

That could be a bit of a problem, EliJaH. Unlimited SaGa's a fairly popular OST around here, and it's been well represented in past BSC's.

I don't know if Battle Theme 1 was nominated in a BSC, but the whole OST is recognized enough that I have a slight tendency to balk at a USaGa nomination on principle.

But if others have no arguments, then I can suppress my own opinions long enough to let it slide in.

THE POWER OF WATER Nov 30, 2006 11:58 PM

Crash is just voting against it because he doesn't like Unlimited SaGa's music. Besides, the BT themes are better anyway. :sneaky:

Seriously though, I'd vote for too popular, having heard it. Then again, I remember the SaGa Frontier II track we had up for voting a while ago.

orion_mk3 Dec 1, 2006 12:12 AM

I'd be against it too...if we hadn't already thrown caution to the wind. Now I keep feeling like I'm just being stodgy and opposing everything.

TheKnightOfNee Dec 1, 2006 04:45 AM

There's been a ton of borderline stuff nominated lately, it seems. Halo 2 and Grandia 3 a couple weeks back both got in, though, so I'm not sure what's too popular and what's not. Blaster Master's music I had refrained from nominating in the past because I thought it was already well known. Final Fantasy Legend isn't from the main series, but has the FF name tacked on it. I thought Devil May Cry music was always pretty popular. And Unlimited Saga is pretty well known around these parts. All of these are things I probably would give extreme caution when nominating, as I think these all may be a bit too popular. But, I haven't been around SOTW as long as most people, so perhaps I'm thinking on the conservative side of things.

Drakken Dec 1, 2006 05:07 AM

No way US's Battle Theme 1 should be allowed; I'm 99% sure that was in BSC already. And the US soundtrack is pretty well known regardless.

Things have definitely been more lax lately...maybe we should knuckle down and get back to the roots of SotW.

Dr. Uzuki Dec 1, 2006 05:50 AM

No to US from me, particularly Battle Theme 1. The album has seen many nominations in the BCSs and Best Battle Track contests. "Overture" even broke the top sixteen in 04.

note: I'd be willing to let BT Ver 5 slide simply because I freakin' love that track.

I agree that things have been lax lately, it's probably due to the low amount of nominations.

I'm just now noticing that Ardjet from ZOE2 has been nominated. I know we've established that non placing pieces can be given a second go, but, has this been nominated before? The name sounds so familiar. It may of been BSC though.

Third edit in this Frankenstein post: Point distribution.

Aaarrrrggghhhh, what have you done?!?!?!?!?!? Now if the track places, I'll have to wait weeks before I can nominate from Gauntlet: SS!!! In any case, interesting choice. The game was dreadfully below expectations but at least the music was pretty good in several spots.

I'll say no to Unlimited:SaGa, too. It's far too popular already with so many appearances in various BSCs and Best Battle tracks. Note that just because a game is popular, like Devil May Cry, it's soundtrack might not necessarily be.

And yes, I think I heard Ardjet somewhere before on GFF (outside of my own leisure listening). I can't remember if it appeared on SotW. Or BSC. I do remember that it didn't do too well.

Back to Week 78 proper, some very good tracks! Points to follow soon.

arch_slayer Dec 1, 2006 11:42 AM

I'm going to do a re-edit later, I can't exactly remember the tracks that are done from the past...

THE POWER OF WATER Dec 1, 2006 11:57 AM

Ardjet hasn't been in SotW, but I do remember it appearing somewhere on GFF before, so I think it was probably in last year's BSC. I don't have the list of tracks with me, so I can't check for certain.

Anyone else feeling against the Blaster Master nom?

Djinova Dec 1, 2006 02:24 PM

Chaos Legion Original Soundtrack - I can hear the shriek (Stage ~Cave~)
Right away, this is the track I like best. Calm lady voice in great contrast to the wickedness in the background. Ok, it's basically Shadow Hearts, but still not quite. Towards the end, it gets quite intense once again.

HALO 2 Original Soundtrack and New Music Vol. 1 - 2nd Movement of the Odyssey Aside from the fact that it's remarkably got split into different sections, I like it quite a lot. I have to think about how to deal with this one pointwise.

Mr. Bones Soundtrack - In This World
Um, some instrumental parts are good, but I wasn't so fond of the vocals, partly lyrics partly voice.

Phalanx - The Enforce Fighter A-144 (SNES Game Rip) - Under Water (Stage 2) A quite good chiptune here. Fresh, bright, well-developed melody, even though a bit short.

Republic - The Revolution Original Soundtrack - Blood Brother Another quite good track on its own. A bit plain and actually nothing innovative, but somehow it remains absolutely absorbing throughout. Have to think about this one as well.

Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children Perfect Sound Tracks - Unpublished Tune (Arrange Ver.) The good streak continues with another refreshing track. It's got some nice timbre, but isn't quite as memorable as some of the other entries.

STELLA DEUS BGM ReArrange Album - Planet She OMG, another very good track, does this end? Plain piano has to be something special nowadays to make the cut, and this one holds up quite well. The melody is not so much of da bomb, but other interesting harmonics made up for it.

Under Defeat -Extended Tracks- - tears which died -First I thought the sample choices are quite odd, but they lend this track a lot character. The more I listen to this, the more I like it. It's a bit similar to Shin Megami, but has a touch more depth in my opinion.

Great week, I guess. I want Chaos Legion to place, so I have to vote like that this time.

3 Points : I can hear the shriek (Stage ~Cave~)
1 Point : 2nd Movement of the Odyssey
1 Point : Planet She
1 Point : tears which died
Sorry: see comments

Nomination: forgot to carry it with me, I'll post something on Sunday (probably).

Yeah, I already mentioned that it shouldn't be allowed, considering it's one of THE most popular chiptunes of all time. Pretty straightforward decision, imo.

THE POWER OF WATER Dec 1, 2006 05:13 PM

Aye, just making sure that didn't get lost in the Unlimited SaGa shuffle. (seems pretty decisive against US)

I remember last year that The Moon from DuckTales was almost voted into SotW eligibility; only its representation and deep advancement in the BSC caused it to be pulled.

The friggin' Moon.

So, I guess what I'm saying is don't be too surprised if Blaster Master holds up.

I'm withdrawing the Blaster Master nom. Mayben I only played it for the first time last week (Despite having been playing video games since 1986,) but if a Suikoden 1 nom made the rules of obscurity almost non-existant in its following days, I don't want to see Blaster Master's effect (FF7 Theme Week FTL,) so here's my new one.

Spoiler:
Megalomania is good though.

arch_slayer Dec 2, 2006 12:07 AM

I'd rather nominate something that's at least definitely hasn't been in contests previously...

I'm sticking to the military theme, the song I'm choosing comes from Front Mission 5 Original Soundtrack. If by any chance, you think this is too common (especially because the song is from Square), by all means tell me. But I think the soundtrack hasn't really been appearing enough lately... and the only track in this years SOTY was also nominated by me. But this time, I'm keeping with the other side of Front Mission 5, strong epic melody. Hard choice... because there's a group of at least 7 awesome songs.

Next time I turn to something really weird.

Vexxon Dec 2, 2006 02:13 AM

After the generally positive comments on this week, I have to say I, was a bit disappointed. Not that I didn't enjoy some of the songs, but there was nothing that came close to being amazing.

Chaos Legion Original Soundtrack - I can hear the shriek (Stage ~Cave~) - Seemed like it meandered too much... as in, it could have been cut to 2 minutes, and I don't feel like I would have missed the important stuff. Other than that, it's not bad, it's not stunning. An average song in my book.

HALO 2 Original Soundtrack and New Music Vol. 1 - 2nd Movement of the Odyssey - I'm probably biased against Incubus, but even if that weren't the case, I still wouldn't like this song. I've tried repeated listens, but I just can't get into it. It just alternates between boring and irritating. Ah well, I tried.

Mr. Bones Soundtrack - In This World - Definitely not the kind of thing I'm normally into, from the genre, to the lyrics, to the style. However, I understand that it's done fairly well, and I think I'll give it a point just for that.

Phalanx - The Enforce Fighter A-144 (SNES Game Rip) - Under Water (Stage 2) - A pretty fun listen, I can hear the quality of the composition, but it's just not my kind of song, for all that. Fades off at a pretty weird spot, even for a game rip.

Republic - The Revolution Original Soundtrack - Blood Brother - It has a good... atmosphere. I don't know how else to explain it, but I feel like it would fit certain events, certain places very well. That said, probably not something I'd listen to outside of that event and that place. Might have stood more of a chance if the singer(s?) were more prominent, or added more complexity, or something.

Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children Perfect Sound Tracks - Unpublished Tune (Arrange Ver.) - Not a bad song, but I had forgotten it only thirty seconds after hearing it. I like it even though it's pretty generic... if it had something to set it apart, it probably would have gotten 3 points from me this week.

STELLA DEUS BGM ReArrange Album - Planet She - Probably the strongest nomination this week. It held my attention throughout the song, and the amount of variation keeps it listenable for quite a while. Not something I'd nominate myself, but pretty good, nonetheless.

Under Defeat -Extended Tracks- - tears which died - Seemed very promising at the beginning, but lost quite a bit of momentum throughout the six minutes. Like I can hear the shriek, would have greatly benefited from a good edit or two.

*~Point Distribution~*
3 points - STELLA DEUS BGM ReArrange Album - Planet She

Album: Plok!

I know that Tim Follin gets a decent amount of attention on this site, but I have no idea how well Plok has been represented...

Also, would a track from any of the three donkey kong countries clear eligibillity standards?

Drakken Dec 2, 2006 07:33 PM

Plok's gotten some attention, but I'm not sure how many people have actually heard its music. I've only "skimmed through" a few songs, so I'm not familiar with it.

DKC would be too popular, imo. Everyone knows that's quality music. I suppose 2 & 3 are less known, but still.

We did have Follin Week a few months ago, if that tells you anything. I recall seeing one or two Plok songs in SoTW before. Still, I don't think anyone would call it "too popular."

Probably not eligible. Those tracks always show up and do well in the BSC (much to my befuddlement, since I'm not that fond of them).

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Dec 2, 2006 11:13 PM

I'm not 100% positive, but I think the title theme to Plok! was nominated a long while back. Three or four tracks have been nominated, but none have placed.

However, it's probably been long enough that Plok! is eligible for renomination by now. So, that one should stand.

DKC tracks are borderline. They're not super popular, but still not really obscure either. I'm not sure where I stand on their eligibility.

Chuckster Dec 2, 2006 11:22 PM

Just remember I predicted a Planet She win upon its nomination.

(3 points) Stella Deus ReArrange: Planet She - And for the last time I will also plug Sky Ray from the same album, a superior track in its own right. As for Planet She, I loved the piano ever since I heard the track.

No comments for the rest.

(2 points) Under Defeat -Extended Tracks- - tears which died

(1 point) Phalanx - The Enforce Fighter A-144 (SNES Game Rip) - Under Water (Stage 2)

Edit: Here comes a nomination (though admittedly I've been scraping with my most recent noms, it's tempered by the knowledge that so few nominators make my spring to action a necessity).

Just for the record, DKC tracks have been refused before (Mining Melancholy from DKC2 to be precise). DKC3 might get away with it, and tracks exclusive to the GBA ports of the games are probably fair game too, but generally DKC is too popular.

*climbs back into hole*

Elorin Dec 3, 2006 09:01 AM

TCK, you're back! I think... How have you been?

In any case, I think the first two DKC soundtracks should be off-limits. As for Plok, no issues with the game being nominated but if "Main Theme" has been nominated before, I'd rather see a different track being nominated but no strong objections if it gets nominated again.

Manny Biggz Dec 3, 2006 09:03 AM

My nomination isn't in the queue. Is that because it didn't qualify? If so, let me know so I can change my nomination.

Elorin Dec 3, 2006 09:32 AM

I think your nomination is clear, Manny. I've added it to the queue in any case. Unless someone has very strong reason to not want to have the SaGa track in.

As for Vexxon's track, I just downloaded the SPC set. I don't think I've heard it before on SotW. I'm ok with it.

My nom isn't in the queue either. Or is that standard procedure when someone doesn't nominate for a while and is removed from the cycle?

Kaleb.G Dec 3, 2006 02:47 PM

I honestly have little time for comments, unfortunately, but let it be known that I enjoyed this week a good deal.

3 point(s) :: Under Defeat -Extended Tracks- - tears which died
My nom. The main melody hits my sweet spot, and also reminds me of Flash Man's theme from MM2. I actually like the guitar's melody in some sections, though there is a good amount of "noodling". Nevertheless, it doesn't overstay its welcome, and it breaks up the sections of this track nicely. For those who want this track sans guitar interludes, check out the version on the Under Defeat -Sound Tracks- album.

1 point(s) :: Phalanx - The Enforce Fighter A-144 (SNES Game Rip) - Under Water (Stage 2)
I really like the melody, even though the body of the track seems like it could be more varied either in tone, tempo, or instrumentation. Anyway, this has been playing in my head almost the entire week.

1 point(s) :: Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children Perfect Sound Tracks - Unpublished Tune (Arrange Ver.)
The main melody reminds me of something Matt Wilson (of Mega Man FM infamy) would compose. In other words, it's cool.

1 point(s) :: STELLA DEUS BGM ReArrange Album - Planet She
A great track. This is piano work I can really get into. Also, the fact that this probably isn't even one of my favorite tracks from the album says a lot about said album's quality (i.e. it's awesome).

HALO 2 Original Soundtrack and New Music Vol. 1 - 2nd Movement of the Odyssey
I think this track is excellent. It would have gotten at least two points from me this week if it weren't for the fact that the HALO 2 OST Vol. 1 is one of the highest selling game albums ever released (at least in North America, if not worldwide). If people haven't listened to this album, that's their loss, since I'm sure they're all aware of it. I own the album myself, and I don't even like the Halo games.

Chaos Legion Original Soundtrack - I can hear the shriek (Stage ~Cave~)
The first minute of this track is great, but afterwards it seems to do nothing new until the very end where it just tapers off. Still cool to listen to.

Mr. Bones Soundtrack - In This World
The music is great, but the vocals/lyrics are a mixed bag for me. After a few listens, I ended up not caring for this track as much.

Republic - The Revolution Original Soundtrack - Blood Brother
Bored me like no other.

I guess I understand not giving points because you think it shouldn't be here, but c'mon now. If it got through, it got through, so you should treat it like all the other tracks. And as I explained - regardless of the OST's popularity, I'd venture that most people are not familiar with the Incubus tracks on the soundtrack. Most people either just listened to the Marty stuff or heard the Incubus tracks once while playing through the album for the first time, then didn't listen to them again.

I actually thought the Incubus track was disappointing after the first minute and a half or so. They had some cool sounds/ideas, then it just went into some bland instrumental stuff. There are several bands in the amateur game arrangement scene that could have done much better with the same material.

KyleDunamis Dec 3, 2006 04:34 PM

My nom isn't in the queue either.

Also, while I won't question the eligibility of Plok this time, I wil be watching the voting closely. If Plok seems to get alot of votes based on the fact that Follin composed it, I'll keep that in mind next time a Follin track is nominated.

Very soon, in fact! =O

Double Post:
Regarding Plok!
We've had three noms from Plok!: the tracks named "Akrillic Beach" and "Sleepy Dale" from some game rip and "Plok's House" from the SNESmusic.org SPC set. None have placed, and I strongly encourage tracks be nominated from Plok! until one does.

Regarding DKC
I'd say the SNES versions of DKC1-3 should be off limits, but I'm fine with any original tracks that were written for the GBA ports, having not heard their rips. In fact, we HAVE had one of those in the past, Mill Fever from DKC3 GBA, which placed third in Week 44.

Double Post:
Voting is closed and nominations are restricted. Here are the depressing results because only three tracks were allowed to place:

1). [27] STELLA DEUS BGM ReArrange Album - Planet She
2). [19] Chaos Legion Original Soundtrack - I can hear the shriek (Stage ~Cave~)
3). [18] Under Defeat -Extended Tracks- - tears which died
4). [12] Mr. Bones Soundtrack - In This World
5). [11] Shin Megami Tensei Devil Children Perfect Sound Tracks - Unpublished Tune (Arrange Ver.)
6). [9] Republic - The Revolution Original Soundtrack - Blood Brothers
7). [8] HALO 2 Original Soundtrack and New Music Vol. 1 - 2nd Movement of the Odyssey
8). [4] Phalanx - The Enforce Fighter A-144 (SNES Game Rip) - Under Water (Stage 2)

Interesting tidbit: there was only one person who didn't give at least one point to Planet She this week, Liontamer. =O

I do beleive that we've had some nominations from that series before, which would mean it was kosher. There were some in the BSC too, but they didn't do particularly well. So, my answer would be no, though you might hear something different from one of our other members.

Awww, color me bummed that "In This World" couldn't squeak out a bronze finish. I didn't expect it to finish first when I nominated it, but I thought maybe more people would appreciate a good, bluesy vocal. Quality vocals tracks, English or otherwise, are so rare.

But 4th place is a respectable finish for a risky nomination. As the week wore on, I grew concerned that it'd place dead last.

Regarding Timesplitters, I'm totally cool with nominations from the series. Graham Norgate is rather underrated. "1970 Chinese" was nominated a few months back, but I think all the other tracks are eligible.

Dark, maybe you'll have a better chance with chiptune noms in the BCC. :p

I'm fine with Timesplitters. We've had a few tracks in SotW/BSC over the years, but I still consider its music relatively obscure.

Very glad to see Planet She take 1st place. Though it was a good week, that song deserved it more than the others.

I am quite content with the results, especially that Chaos Legion placed. But this was really only possible, when it got 1/3 of its points in the last minutes.
