Super Mario Brothers 1 Race

http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...+brothers+race

These two make for the most exciting run of Super Mario Brothers 1 EVER.

Looking at the video in slow motion, "Luigi" (Right Screen) wins by a hair.

It's very entertaining. If TV ever made games a sport like soccer and tennis, Speed Runs should really be a part of it.

Piano Mar 10, 2006 08:36 AM

That was pretty sick, especially the pixel-perfect jumps over the pipe monsters.

I'm pretty good on keyboard (until the 8- worlds parts come up, cant really do the long jumps unless Im using a controller). Other than that I could do a speed-run worthy finish.

Its too bad the only thing that would be close to that in the states would most likely be boradcasted on (of all things) G4, its too bad we dont take games seriously unlike the Koreans.

Trigunnerz Mar 10, 2006 02:16 PM

I hear that in Korea, they have some sort of channel purely for StarCraft. Now that's just lame.

Eleo Mar 10, 2006 02:23 PM

Starcraft is the best strategy game since chess >:O

They're not using emulators. They're using NESes.

Cyantre Mar 10, 2006 09:37 PM

The best thing about this was the crowd reaction. I couldn't believe people were getting so excited about a SMB race.

Yeah, the fact that an audience was there made this video infinitely cooler. I mean, they're even cheering "Go Mario!" and stuff like that, like this is really serious and shit. Hilarious! And we can't forget the awesome soundtrack in the background!

Playing a video game speedrun can only be amplified by playing Danger Zone from Top Gun (which has its own video game).

I'll put in a request over at SDA for ya.

Lady Miyomi Mar 10, 2006 11:00 PM

That was an awesome video! Got anymore stuff like this?

DK RendeR Mar 10, 2006 11:54 PM

That video was just cool as hell. Nintendo should have created a remake of this game with a race feature like Sega did for Sonic.

shadowlink56 Mar 11, 2006 01:08 AM

Gorgeous. I love the above suggestion too. Split screen racing!! Why not in New SMB?! Someone send a letter!

Fjordor Mar 11, 2006 01:49 AM

Most impressive I must say.

Synthesis Mar 11, 2006 01:55 AM

Cool race. For a while there it looked like
Spoiler:
Luigi was going to run away with it, but Mario closed back up
Great stuff.

Josiah Mar 11, 2006 05:09 AM

Fantastic. Makes me wish I'd thought of doing that with a friend for a talent show idea. Now if only I was that good at it. :p

Myst' Mar 11, 2006 07:49 AM

Fuck, I need 6 mins for lvl 1

I lose

MeTaL_oRgY Mar 11, 2006 09:54 AM

That was awesome...

not as awesome as this, though: http://youtube.com/watch?v=OP9kZ0ua2h8

Heh. Impressive, but that one's not even "real". Real dudes in real costumes played the real games in front of a real audience in the SMB1 one. Which is also crazy, but that's besides the point.

I also agree that the crowd cheering with "Danger Zone" in the background was the best part of the whole thing. =P

It's a TAS (Tool-Assisted Speedrun) stolen from Bisqwit's site. So first off, it's not even the author's work. And second, it's emulated, not a real console based performance.

The REAL authors and where it originally came from.

It happens often enough around me. Got similar ridiculousness when some friends and I were racing through classic games like that as well. Not as intense as the Koreans though, but it was fun, especially when the crowd is pure energy.

[Mario'sFatRoom]New Super Mario Bros. actually does have a simultaneous two player mode, and the objective is to see who can finish first apparently.[/Mario'sFatRoom]

Cyantre Mar 12, 2006 10:26 AM

It's also amusing that it's not even a racing game. It's SMB1, but that is like The Game and everyone knows it. It's video game history.

Yeah, figured it out after a while... that'll teach me to read youtube's comments. :(

Conan-the-3rd Mar 12, 2006 10:43 AM

Also on the TAS run, that one's been obsolueted by another one who keeps FireMario from about 4-1 untill the rest of the game.

Both types of Run are aweseom in thier own ways, Ligit runs for thier pure speed and TAS for the wierd crap you can pull off at 1/3 speed.

GarretThe Thief Mar 12, 2006 07:57 PM

Damm If I could do that i wouldent need to play

Jochie Mar 12, 2006 08:29 PM

Most excitement I've had all day. I was like, "Ohhh!" and so forth right along with the crowd.

JackTheRipper Mar 12, 2006 08:39 PM

Wow, that was some intense mario. I couldn't tell who even tell who won. They were like doing identical jumps and moves throughout the whole game.

halori Mar 12, 2006 08:54 PM

impressive move....
never know that mario can be played like that

DeLorean Mar 14, 2006 08:07 PM

For the first few minutes... it wasnt funny, I wasnt excited about it at all. But toward the end, I realized these guys are FUCKING INCREDIBLE at this game! lol and when people started saying "OH MY GOD!!" and then they were dressed as mario and luigi, that just pushed me over the edge. This was hilarious.

Remember Super Mario Bros Deluxe? The Game Boy Color Port of SMB1? It also had a simultaneous 2 player racing to see who would finish first. And of course added were blocks that could affect the other player, so it wasn't just memorization.

majario Mar 21, 2006 02:43 PM

This video is awesome. I wish I had gone to see this. If only there was something in America that gave things like this a chance against other sports like basketball or racing. I know all the gamers would love to see something like this become a regular thing for television.

They do. When I visited Korea to see my relatives there were like two channels: I think one had starcraft and the other had something else (warcraft?).

It's entertaining to watch, though it makes you want to play.

As for the video, that was amazing. I had to say that it got very exciting as time went by.

Arbok Mar 21, 2006 03:56 PM

Like others, I loved the crowd reaction and choice of music (oddly enough, whenever I hear "Danger Zone" I think back to its use in the old Mario Bros cartoon, so it seemed even more freaky to hear it here...).

somedude2387 Mar 24, 2006 09:49 PM

Oh man I love speed runs. If anyone doesn't know, go to http://speeddemosarchive.com/ for heaps of speed runs (although not with an audience). If my mum hadn't given away my nes so many years ago, I'd totally be playing it now

b-hc.net|andrew Mar 28, 2006 09:40 PM

I always had a hard time playing Super Mario... To tell the trut I have never even beaten the original game... but Ive beaten allth new ones.... I just always sucked at 2d games!

Rydia Mar 28, 2006 10:57 PM

That was a good race. I was watching the screen on the right for a bit and then switched to the left. I was impressed at how close they each got to the enemies when jumping over tubes.

josho Mar 28, 2006 10:59 PM

That video was pretty intense. I found it a little challenging, keeping track of both screens at once to see how both players were doing. Nonetheless still very cool to see that people are finding new limits for older video games.
