I've seen all of these except Borat, which in all honesty has no place on that list anyway.

Yes, I've really seen all 250 movies on that list, except Borat.

I know Borat doesn't belong there because for anything to be considered THE BEST EVER it has to be out more than a few weeks. Hell, that list probably shouldn't have any films from the past five years on it. Not saying there aren't some excellent recently made films, but they still don't stand a best-of-all-time sort of test.

It's not a definitive, official best-of-all-time list based on the opinions of movie critics, filmmakers, etc., which is why movies from the last 5 years are on there.

So as you can see, I'm obviously not a movie person (sorry, TV person right here). Out of the top 30 movies, I've only seen six of them (Schindler's List, Pulp Fiction, Star Wars, LotR: FotR, 12 Angry Men, and LotR: TTT).

I will never understand why people rank this in their top lists. It was a good movie, but by no means one of the greatest of all time. Is it the twist at the end that gets everyone all WAH WAH WHAT AN AWESOME MOVIE

I also saw this one, and I really disliked it. I'm not sure anyone would consider it one of their favorites. I could hardly watch the whole thing without falling asleep.

But then, I also HATED The English Patient. I'll never understand the appeal of some of these movies.

I don't really agree with this list at all. Any list where Borat is rated better than The Hustler (my all time favorite movie) doesn't seem to make much sense.

Twelve Angry Men is a movie everyone should see, not just for entertainment, but for a bit of cultural perspective. It's possible that it's been ruined to some extent because of all of the imitations in TV and film, but this is one case where I think the original is definitively better than anything that came after it.

I've tried to start Dr Strangelove a couple of times, but I started falling asleep after an hour or so both times.

Yeah, this is sad. I've seen the Star Wars movies, and the Lord of the Rings movies. But other than that, there's not much up there I've seen. I've only seen 9 of the top 20, and 13 of the top 30.

Dr. Strangelove has really slow pacing by today's standards. Honestly, it gets better as it progresses, and Dr. Strangelove is an awesome character.

Anyway, my list:

1. #3 - The Godfather Part 2 - I actually have this on DVD, so it's just a matter of me setting aside a chunk of time and watching it.
2. #5 - The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly - Never did like westerns, but I've liked other stuff by Clint Eastwood, so I do intend to give it a shot eventually.
3. #6 - Casablanca - This is one of those movies that's been parodied far too much for me to take it seriously.
4. #8 - The Seven Samurai - I've seen other Kurosawa flicks, but I never got around to seeing this. I plan to pick up that new Criterion DVD soon to watch this.
5. #12 - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - Once again, just gotta get around to it.
6. #13 - Rear Window - I've honestly only seen three Hitchcock films, and this isn't one of 'em.
7. #15 - 12 Angry Men - Skex seems to endorse this one quite a bit, so I'll give it a shot.
8. #18 - City of God - Not really on my radar at the moment.
9. #22 - Citizen Kane - Honestly, it's hyped up far too much. I haven't watched it for the same reasons many people don't play FF7.
10. #29 - Sunset Blvd. - I don't like Film Noir much.

BTW Skex, I didn't get that far, but I haven't seen It's a Wonderful Life. I'm not Christian though, so that might be a factor.

The last movie that really impressed me was "Festen". Sadly, it's on rank 245. It was more art than a normal movie. As with all those list, I can't really agree, especially on the top positions.

I'm not sure why I haven't seen this movie yet because everyone tells me that it's a very good western joint. Some of my buddies have it ranked higher than The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

2. #43 - Der Üntergang
I've heard nothing but good things about this film and yet haven't got around to seeing it.

3. #46 - The Third Man
I don't think I've ever heard of this movie.

4. #49 - The Treasure of Sierra Madre
I remember not wanting to see this. I just couldn't picture Bogart as a cowboy.

5. #51 - M
This one is news to me. The concept seems interesting enough just by reading the plot and now I kind of want to see it.

6. #60 - Metropolis
Turn-of-the-century sci-fi never did attract my attention much when I was younger. Now I'm tempted to see this just to see what I missed.

7. #95 - The Apartment
I believe that this is the movie that Wicker Park was based on so I've wanted to see it since because I actually LIKED Wicker Park.

8. #99 - City Lights
Yet another Charlie Chaplin movie that I never got around to watching.

9. #106 - Ran
This one I'm really not happy not having seen. I'm an absolute Kurosawa whore and it's supposed to be up there with Rashômon and Seven Samurai. :/

10. #113 - Le Salaire de la peur (Wages of Fear)
This one's news to me too. I've never heard of it, but it looks interesting enough as well from the plot summary.

Missing the top 3 :( The Godfather trilogy is definitely high on my list. Some of the older movies I've missed I didn't even know about. A noteable movie further down that I've yet to see is Taxi Driver at #36

The first half of the movie is pretty damn good, just because Kane is painted as such an interesting and charming person, but the movie is about the failure of the capitalist system in some ways, so in this case it's also about Kane's failure as a man, which is kinda disappointing when you have all your hopes and theatrical interest invested in the guy.

I just figured since they play it every year in the U.S., people have to have seen it, even if they were around the dinner table at the time. :tpg:

I should have suspected Buono, il brutto, il cattivo, Il was The Good The Bad and The Ugly, but something just didn't click in my head. That means my actual last movie should be Goodfellas (21).

I saw "The Magnificent Seven," which removed any desire on my part to see "The Seven Samurai," since the plots are essentially the same. My mother saw "North by Northwest" six thousand times when she was pregant with me, so I suppose I must have seen it on a subconscious level. I hate Tarantino, so I've no desire to see Pulp Fiction, and City of God just sounded depressing as hell.

I should probably see the others, but the thing is that since they're so ingrained in pop culture, I've basically already seen all the good parts.

To be honest I did see a few minutes of 1 3 and 4, but that's it. Even as a kid I could just never get into the whole Star Wars thing, mostly for 2 reasons.
1-The whole "Dark Side" thing just seemed to me to be incredibly cheesy. I couldn't take it seriously. If they would've said evil it would've been fine. Dark Side makes it sound like it's Luke Skywalker vs Satan.
2-I always felt like a kid that walks into the middle of a conversation and he has no idea about what's going on.

Now that I've watched Episode 4-6 in their entirety, I'm now actually for the first time looking forward to seeing 1-3. Now that I know what's up.

I love comedies like the next guy. Adam sandler makes me pee my pants, but i had to put the most enspiring movies for me. I also love action but not to many of them have the kind of story i really find captivating. (Man on fire is an exception) I tire of reality and like to see people use their emaginations when it comes to making movies. Yeah it's cool to tell a true story or what you would have done but I am more of a fantasy type movie guy. Thats my excape, just like the movies with a dor way to another reality. I also like hystory movies i even if they are fake It was just top ten and i couldnt fit them. The whole king arthur thing was cool until they tried to make it "real". Scary movies i hate because they are getting even more rediculaous with everyone. The others i liked and i liked the haunting until it went to far.

of all those i have only heard of goodfellas, the rest i have no idea what they are about.

God, the lack of culture in this thread makes me feel queasy. However, a lot of the entries on this list have no right being on the list. I mean, shit, Downfall was great - but how the fuck did it sneak onto the top 100 list? And anyone who says Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is better than The Elephant Man is not a person allowed into humanity. (Donnie Darko outranks RAN. I hate the world and the internet and everyone involved with it)

Day is one of the best. I even have a romero signed copy of it

Day is certainly better than Land... but it's a huge step down from the first two movies.

Two of the above movies I do want to watch, one being "One flew over the Cuckoo's Nest", and I love Jack Nicholson, so I should make time for this one sooner or later. The other being Dr. Strangelove, as I'd like to see a 1960's take on Nuclear weapons twisted with from what I read, comedy.

A lot of these movies are before 1980, and I usually don't watch movies before then. Not because of the special effects... just the quality of the image. I fap at HD quality images ftw.

So you ignore the majority of movies because of grain? What will be your defense when HD quality becomes a thing of the past? "Oh, I only watch things with the best quality picture" is a stupid, stupid thing to say.

The first three in bold are hands down the best movies I've ever seen in my life. Watching them in the theaters was an experiance I'll never forget, it was quite simply, revolutionary. The rest of the list are just movies I can think of off the top of my head. I know alot of people will disagree with The Matrix and Titanic especially.

Dude, I've liked many a romantic story. I dig the romance. I hate badly written, hackneyed, predictable, trite romance. Like the Notebook.

Most of these movies I've wanted to see, I've just never got around to it. My parents didn't really culture me on older movies. With having a Blockbuster Online subscription now, though, I plan on finally catching up on all this stuff sooner than later.

I've worked in the industry for 7 years, and I'm on the cusp of a degree in film/film history, so I know a little about it... but the ultimate source? Hardly. And of all the films on your list, you should really watch... well, all of them. Iwata may dismiss films because the little indie kids like them, but they can be some fantastic bits of filmmaking.

Your comment about The English Patient made me reconsider though. I absolutely loathe the English Patient... worst soft porn movie... ever. Horribly overrated... So bad that I actually compare all other movies to it. Anything that approaches the vicinity of English Patient bad is not worth watching.

It seems I've seen quite a bit more movies than most here but I'm still lacking in some of the older films.

Personally I'm really suprised to see The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly rated at #5. I mean, I liked the movie and all and thought it was great but I'd definitely have a very hard time trying to recommend it to anyone.

Another interesting thing is to note how many movies there are on the list from 1999 - 2001, yet so few from after 2001. It really does make you sit and perhaps question the quality of films we've had put out the past few years.

That isn't entirely true. I like some movies that are embraced by indie kids like wes anderson films and fulci films. From previews, indie hyping and word of mouth helped determine that such movies like Amélie and eternal sunshine of the spotless mind aren't my cup of tea. Then again are tastes are completely different in nearly everything and you probably think stuff that i enjoy like Kinski/Herzog and Kar Wai Wong are pure shit.


I also don't see how many people don't care for City of God. It was probably one of the best movies i've seen in the past 5 years.

Admittedly, it's been a long while since I've seen it, but all I remember was a bunch of poor Brazilian kids running wild through some Rio slum, selling drugs and generally being jackasses.

It really didn't appeal to me at all - I just saw a washed up point.

What did you find appealing about it? I would appreciate it if you could tell me so maybe I can appreciate something MORE in the film. =/

I personally loved the flow of the movie and how it all came together at the end as well as capturing the grittiness of life a hell of a lot better then most movies can. It also oozed more charm then any other movie i have seen in the past 5 years.

The scene with the kids and the shooting is still one of the most painful scenes for me to watch to this day.

I can't agree with that statement. It just doesn't make sense. When a movie is good, its good no matter when it was made.

Nothing is going to change about that movie in the future. Sure, a couple weeks IS a bit new, but the past five years... I can't agree with that.

I believe if a movie has been out for at least a couple of years and its still maintained its appeal and fan-base, then it belongs on that list.
