Angry Video Game Nerd... Totally Awesome

This guy is either lol funny because he speaks the truth or lol funny because he bitches so much when he basically sucks at nes games... personally i'm going more with the latter statement.

I've included most of his game reviews so you have a choice but I don't exspect any sane person who isn't bored to death like I was to watch them all... I personally recommend the ninja turtles edition... XD

CASTLEVANIA 2: SIMON's QUEST (10 mins)
DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE (7 mins)
THE KARATE KID (5 mins)
BACK TO THE FUTURE (7 mins)
ROGER RABBIT (4 mins)
TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (7 mins)
McKids (7 mins)
WALLY BEAR AND THE NO GANG (4 mins)
Top Gun (7 mins)
MASTER CHU AND THE DRUNKARD HU (4 mins)
Double Dragon III (4 mins)
Friday the 13th (12 mins)

Cellius Oct 24, 2006 12:12 PM

This guy is hilarious. The only one that I hated was the Master Chu one, for obvious reasons. I would think if you watched just a few of his videos you'd realize that he doesn't suck at the games; he understands what makes them good and bad; what, is your nostalgia getting the way of agreeing with him?

Edit:
I too second the Ninja Turtles video, as well as Double Dragon, for one shining golden moment therein.

S_K Oct 24, 2006 12:13 PM

Not really he just seems to bitch a little too much for my tastes... that and he sucks at Double Dragon 3 the AI on level 1 is far easier to fool then he claims it to be :D

JazzFlight Oct 24, 2006 12:46 PM

Great parody of Angry Nintendo Nerd (and a bit of Gamelife) done by Shmorky from SomethingAwful.

"What the fucking fuck, Nintendo? What the fuck?"

S_K Oct 24, 2006 12:54 PM

"woah look at that it's a monster's face!" nice find XD although that kinda makes angry nerd cool in a way because someone parodied him @_@

Kaleb.G Oct 24, 2006 01:54 PM

Angry Nintendo Nerd is pretty awesome, even though a few of his videos are lacking in comparison. I think some of his phrase choices are great. "It fucking sucks, it sucking fucks, it fucking blows, it's a piece of shit...and I don't like it." Priceless.

electric_eye Oct 24, 2006 03:50 PM

The Roger Rabbit phone call cracked me up. Some of the footage highlights ridiculous gameplay, TMNT has a class moment (Walking over that part)! I think Angry Nintendo Nerd is okay at games, I mean if it got to the point where he was a perfectionist then maybe these vids wouldn't happen, for he is past the point of differentiating between what was good/bad to that degree. Funny shit anyway.

Helloween Oct 24, 2006 05:10 PM

This guy's pretty funny. I've found some of his videos to be lacking, but the McKids one had me almost rolling on the floor. I showed it to my friend who's a big McKids player, and he loved it too.

I'll give this guy space on the internet. He's got something to offer in terms of entertainment, but after a while his "creative" phrase choices and constant swears gets old.

TheKnightOfNee Oct 24, 2006 06:38 PM

I don't really enjoy it too much. He relies too much on swearing too much. That parody was hilarious and captured all the stupid things about him.

He does find really dumb flaws in games though, ones that shouldn't be there or are bad. He's just not a funny person himself.

mortis Oct 24, 2006 11:50 PM

Yeah, he's fairly good...if you get past the CONSTANT SWEARING. I think that actually distracts from his overall meaning...

Identity Crisis Oct 25, 2006 12:37 AM

I enjoy it when he fails at the games more than the reviews that he gives. I thought it was hysterical when he had trouble with the gap near the roof in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game. He obviously didn't remember that he could walk over gaps like he did around the 3:39-3:41 mark earlier in the video.

The Wise Vivi Oct 25, 2006 01:43 AM

While I enjoyed his reviews of the games, and I don't care what you say, Friday the 13th NES game is crap...., his swearing went a little overboard at times. Still, he does a fairly good job critique them.

But yeah, the ANN's not such a bad guy. I find everything he does hilarious. I'm even a friend of his on Myspace.

majario Oct 25, 2006 03:09 AM

I thought this guy was very amusing especially in the Back To The Future one. I was literally turning purple laughing b/c of the cut scenes from the movie. They way he arranged them in the video was absolutely perfect. This was some classic stuff.

I liked the Roger Rabbit one where he calls Jessica Rabbit. If you read the comments on the YouTube video ( prolly have to fish for 'em ), you'll see that someone called the number she gave and wound up talking to a phone sex thing.

Balcony Heckler Oct 25, 2006 06:08 AM

he's not bad. but I personally liked some of the games he hated. oh well . que cera cera

mortis Oct 25, 2006 08:30 AM

I will have to say that in all fairness...M.C. Kids was NOT that bad of a game. I wouldn't have had a problem with the storyline or music being smashed, but the control was fairly solid and there was a degree of originality with running upside down, using heavy bricks, and so forth.

It's called comedic build. Of course he knew he could just walk over it right away. But where's the humor in doing so on the first try?

Well like them or not he made a lot of valid points about these games. Even TMNT (witch i like) was true. I hope he makes some more of these videos because they are funny :P

Hello_Kitty Oct 27, 2006 09:25 AM

"i'd rather superglue my butthole than play this fucking piece of shit" < that was good

constant swearing and repetitive diarhea stuff can be boring but overall his reviews are fun :)

Kimchi Oct 27, 2006 06:02 PM

"You'd be suicidal to get that pizza."

"Why does this jump have to be so closed to cieling? Fuck!"

"You can just walk over it?"

LOL, this is freaking fun to watch.

Infernal Monkey Oct 27, 2006 11:38 PM

Oh there's a thread on this dude now. =o Yeah, he's awesome. Although since Screw Attack got a hold of him and did the whole new review every week for six weeks, he went downhill a bit. It was like he was just extremely bored rather than extremely angry, especially McKids.

Spoiler:
BIMMY AND JIMMY

The Wise Vivi Oct 27, 2006 11:58 PM

Yeah, Mckids was good. But I have a question. Is it true you cannot finish the game because there is no way to get through the lava thingy stuff? I mean, that is pretty sad... like the producers got bored making it or something.

I would be pissed if I bought a game I couldn't finish.

Omnislash124 Oct 29, 2006 01:01 PM

Haha, that was good for a laugh. It's funny to look back on games and their obscene level of difficulty, complete ignorance of logic, and just random stuff.

no it is posible to finish the game (I saw a guide on gamefaqs, but you need to get a block from pritty far back so you might just miss it

Waferballs Oct 30, 2006 11:19 AM

It amazes me when people don't get the point of videos like these. James Rolfe is an actor and film maker. ANN is a character he plays, and the videos are just ment to be funny sketches. It's not supposed to be an "accurate review" - he's not REALLY angry, and yeah it's up to you if you think he's funny because he sucks at the games or because he swears or whatever. I just don't get why people would say "He's not funny because Double Dragon is not as hard as he says it is" or "That's not cool because I like that game"

I mean, if someone made a comedy video about how much "A Link to the Past" sucks, I'd still laugh if it was funny - even though ALTTP is a great game.

I know most of you get this, there's just a few whose mind don't seem to appreciate irony, sarcasm or anything humorous

And for the record, I think this guy is great - though some of his videos don't really live up to the rest.

Yeah, but you have to admit, he's right about some things....at least in my opinion. They're not necessarily all bad games, but he brings out the worst in each game, even if they're just random things that wouldn't bother most people. It's still pretty damn funny. I think the usage of the word "fuck" just makes the sentence which included it funnier. I know he's not really angry, but it makes it funnier if you think he is.

Waferballs Oct 30, 2006 03:38 PM

Of course. That's why I think he's so damn funny also. Sorry I didn't point that out. I'll admit most of those games I haven't played myself, but I have played TMNT. Though I didn't think it was half bad, the way he shows of all the "worst qualities" of the game is really funny, and you can really identify with his frustration :)

Summonmaster Oct 30, 2006 08:17 PM

Thasnk you for exposing us to this :). I was howling at Castlevania 2 and TMNT in particular. These little flaws = challenging bits in those crazy old NES games are hilarious since they're obviously more fustrating than challenging. It's also game exposure too, and I'm now tempted to check out McKids.

I wish he'd cover some of my favourites too like Mappy, or maybe something like Maniac Mansion.

Omnislash124 Oct 30, 2006 10:53 PM

Haha, well, if you actually try, you can find flaws in almost EVERY game ever made. There has not been a perfect game to date, so there are infinite possibilities. I'm actually intrigued about Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde because I didn't get it.....or at least I think I Didn't get it....that gameplay video seemed short...

Aquas Oct 31, 2006 08:29 PM

His new Nightmare on Elm street is quality, IMO. I like when he does a little more stuff than just his angry review. Showing off a some of his Film skills. The premise of the Nightmare on Elm street one is executed pretty well, too. I personally don't mind his excessive swearing. I mean shit if I played as many Nintendo games as he had, I would have to digress to vulgar descriptions of nasty stuff w/ swear words too.

... "Or.. wait, Bimmy Lee?" So funny.

Love the theme song too, had it stuck in my head today.

Omnislash124 Nov 1, 2006 08:38 AM

Haha....in the latest one....
spoiler for extreme language:

"What a pile of shit"

"What a damn pile of shit"

"What a damn pile of fucking shit"

"What a goddamn pile of motherfucking bullshit"

Wonder where they'd go after that......

Powerglove + 8-bit music = awesome.

Yeah, especially after so much establishing that the glove's nearly IMPOSSIBLE to control effectively.

S_K Dec 19, 2006 12:24 PM

I lol'd at that too, kinda gives you the impression the company invented the game for the glove rather then control pads. The mario with jump abuse was great too "I'm touching the floor and he's still jumping!" :D

Well, it's something of a refrence gag.

He couln't land it in his reveiw of Top Gun you see, hence the look on his face.

Gecko3 Dec 21, 2006 07:57 PM

LOL, I love his videos. I actually beat some of those games he's ranting about a long time ago (TMNT, Castlevania 2), but he does make a good point on some of these things.

I particuarly loved his Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street sketches. That's something I probably would've done if I made a student/amateur film about games lol.

Spoiler:
Btw, you can never, ever beat Friday the 13th. If you manage to "kill" Jason, all that happens is the monsters get faster, and Jason is harder to kill. The game just continuously gets faster/harder until you lose. I think once it's night time too, it stays night time, it never gets daylight again until you beat Jason.

He's right about those fuckin' rocks though, they suck ass. I remember anytime I played it, I switched to all the counselors and made sure they all upgraded to the knife first before I did anything else.

And man, I hated having to rescue those idiots all the time. Sometimes I let them die just cause I was so tired of saving the kids/counselors.

I loved how "Jason" forced him to play the game though lol. Apparently playing this game is worse than being killed roflmao.

I never played Nightmare, but I'm starting to wish I had. The 4 player mode looked like it could kick ass hehe.

Nightwolf18 Dec 21, 2006 09:13 PM

This guy is pretty funny. I've only seen Friday The 13th, Nightmare On Elm Street, and Castlevania. I really like the Jason one and Freddy ones there the funiest.

Summonmaster Dec 28, 2006 09:42 PM

The bible games review really gave me a good laugh in comparison to most of the other skit-filled reviews. I was so shocked to see that something like Super 3D Noah's Ark existed, and that these bible games seem like cheap knockoffs of other existing games. Very neat!

It's bad, but I also laugheda lot when he pointed out that you would have the most fun throwing baby Moses into the river on purpose.

Dee Dec 30, 2006 01:50 AM

I only watched TMNT and Castlevania (kind of half assed watched), and seen the somethingawful parody. I think the somethingawful parody is actually funnier. But TMNT was good for a few chuckles. Things that are needlessly annoying are apparent in all games, really.

Lalala Dec 30, 2006 02:56 AM

This guy is hilarious. The Castlevania 2 one is my favorite of his so far.

On a side note, I hated the Friday The 13th game. I was completely lost on how to play the game. Those houses creeped me out for some reason.

Conan-the-3rd Dec 30, 2006 03:56 AM

Honestly, I don't like the Castlevania II one cause it's not exactly up to the format that ANN takes later on.

Additional Spam:
Screwattack released thier top ten ANN moments of 2k6, the PowerGlove TopGun landing is not in there.

That's because he didn't say anything, just the face. He just looked shocked as all hell. I sure as hell didn't expect that #1 though. I was expecting some more Power Glove goodness though, instead of nailing Roger Rabbit to the fucking cross. Everything else he did was pretty much on the spot though.

Bimmy and Jimmy made it on the top 10...ah, I love Double Dragon.

Oh my. Finally, a way to play old Nintendo and Atari games on the PC. What will they think of next? 1998 is an exciting year for internet! :cmb:

There's an interview with the Angry Nintendo Video Game Nerd here. Pretty good read.

Quote:

411:You chug a lot of Rolling Rock in some of the videos. Why Rolling Rock? Did you ever think of switching to a different brand?

James Rolfe: Once I was really drunk on the streets of Philadelphia at 6AM in the rain, with a paper bag and a few cans of Rolling Rock and the NES game Rygar. That's a true story, you couldn't make up something like that. I was walking home from a party in college and someone had an extra copy of Rygar, so he gave it to me.

Meh, I think Angry Nintendo Nerd flows better, especially in his theme song. Regardless if he's no longer strictly Nintendo.

Vi-de-o game = 4 Syllables
Nin-ten-do = 3 Syllables

But regardless, I can't imagine anybody wearing that around here. But if there was, it would be quite the conversation starter.

Ced The Lad Jan 22, 2007 08:58 PM

Hah! I remember this guy! He complained about the Ninja Turtles game which I agree was horrendously absurd. I remember playing that game years ago, but I only played it to see the turtles. I had no hope in beating that game.

Games in the earlier generations are 10 times as hard as the ones out today. Some of them were just broken.

LivingDreams Feb 3, 2007 03:53 AM

The bible study one was funny, haha 3D Noah.

Stop Sign Feb 3, 2007 12:42 PM

Oh, I thought the TMNT one was funny, but only because I remember dying at that stupid dam level over and over again. I really felt his pain there!

Jamma Feb 3, 2007 07:14 PM

Meh, after watching several of them it got a bit boring (probably somewhere between the 900th and 1000th time he said 'fuck'). Repetitiveness kills a joke dontcha-know.

S_K Feb 3, 2007 08:51 PM

That was the vibe I started getting later on, he's more funny when he's sarcastic or explaining what he's ranting about, also it seems he's now doing film rants too (teenage mutant ninja turtles 3) I'd post the link but it's more then one part and I'm feeling lazy =P

Wow. His movie reviews blow. Toooooooo fffuuuucccckkkkiiinnngg long. It's like he's going for a real critic instead of the funny. I mean, some parts are absolutely hilarious, but if they can cut out the other shit, they'd be hittin' the spot.

Conan-the-3rd Feb 8, 2007 03:41 AM

He did a video game valut of Ducktails.

http://www.screwattack.com/Flash%20H...TalesAVGN.html

"Just imagine if you went into a country, killed it's leader and took all the treasures. Well, I suppose he's Scroge McDuck and he can do whatever the fuck he wants"

"You know [the translvania boss] looks like Count Duckula. Actauly, as a kid, there was a load of Duck based cartoon, what the duck (sic) is that about?"

That was pretty lame

Why is he trying to do positive reviews now?

Also, that Theme Song is fucking annoying.

Conan-the-3rd Feb 8, 2007 05:10 AM

It's motherfuckin' ducktales.

Admit it, you'd complain if he negatively reviewed it.

S_K Feb 8, 2007 08:57 AM

Conan has a point although at the same time AVN sounds pretty boring when he tries to do a positive review on stuff, pretty much just like any other fanboy on the planet only cut short...

Such a Lust for Revenge! Feb 8, 2007 11:14 AM

Watched the fucking TMNT one and it was so true, though I feel a sense of pride now for going through that game successfully when it came out. Great fucking shit.

I dunno, that "What the duck" joke was pritty funny.

Plus For me the ANN is more for the observations he made rather than the acute swearing.

Infernal Monkey Feb 27, 2007 11:47 PM

GHOSTBUUUUSTERS. This is the first time I've seen the NES version in action, I'm amused that it both plays and looks like the Atari 2600 one. :]

Spatula Feb 28, 2007 12:39 AM

HOLY FUCK. Infernal, I was crying right to the end man. Good god. I'm surprised he even alluded to it almost being worse than the "WORST NES GAME EVER".

Ced The Lad Feb 28, 2007 06:15 PM

I remember Ducktales. Easily one of my favorite played games on the NES. I just can't believe he actually gave a positive review for once. I mean he didn't even say anything when he landed the plane in Top Gun with the Power Glove (probably fake but funny anyway)

SuperDK Feb 28, 2007 07:25 PM

I actually liked the first thing with Noah's Ark (the christmas one). Not the 3D one though.

"Have you ever tried to lift a horse? Not that easy. What the shit, let alone a horse and an ox? Fuck, a horse, a cow, and two oxen? What the fucking shit!"

So damn funny, I was about to burst out laughing in the library that I'm currently in.

I do agree though, that some of his swearing gets old and stuff, but it's still funny, nonetheless.

Haha, I like how he zoomed in on 3 things in that message. 2 typos and one false statement in the final screen. Damn. Still pretty funny though. Apparently, the programmers thought highly of the game they created.

TheKnightOfNee Mar 1, 2007 02:13 PM

Ah, Ghostbusters... it was the only video game I ever sold in my life. It was that bad. But, I sold it at a garage sale, and used the money to buy Castlevania 3 at another garage sale. Possibly the greatest exchange of my life.

I never made it to the end before. Those stairs were the worst thing ever in gaming. That's a great ending.
