How old is too old for Halloween?

I wasn't really sure if this should go here or in The Quiet Place. So.. if it's in the wrong place let me know..

Since it's getting closer to Halloween my sister started getting ready to go trick or treating. But she is getting a bit old now (16). So I became curious about this subject. I talked with some of my friends and family about the ages they stoped going trick or treating. What ages they started going to parties and even when they stoped doing those.

I got a lot of varied responses for when to stop trick or treating. From as early as 13 to as late as 25. Most of them stopped around 17-19. But a few of them still do it to this day and they're ~20.

The majority of them started doing parties in their late teens. But only a couple stopped going to them once they got into their 20s.

I also noticed the younger ones who dont do either stated that if any one 15 and up came to their door for candy they would turn them away. While those who still trick or treat or go to parties in their older ages would have no problem with an older teen coming for candy as long as they put some thought into their costume.

So I ask you GFF, when did you stop? Do you think it's okay for those older people to do it? Would you rather party or go get some free candy?

Little Brenty Brent Brent Oct 12, 2006 12:36 PM

TWENTY FIVE? Wow, man. Just... wow. I think I stopped trick-or-treating when I was 13 or 14, but it's been a while so I don't remember the exact year. I'll admit I've always thought people who trick-or-treat when they're older are really lame.

The Wise Vivi Oct 12, 2006 01:00 PM

I would say age 16 is when to say stop. I mean, by that age, if you can't afford to buy your own candy or bum off your parents as often as possible, then you are having difficulty.

Although, if you are about 5'7 or less, you could probably get away with it until your about 21 or so. I guess if you feel you need to go trick or treating, go ahead and do so... you just may not like the responses some people will give you...

I stopped at age 14 (Grade 9), my brother quit at age 12. Now that I am in University, I usually go to the parties, although all I dress up in is my plaid jacket... ;) Lumberjack Man!

guyinrubbersuit Oct 12, 2006 01:25 PM

I love Halloween. The last time I went trick or treating was when I was 20. I actually prefer to stay home and pass out candy, only so I can scare the bejeezus out of the smaller kids. Oh man that is so much fun.

I really would like to do elaborate costumes, but I don't have the time or money to do so. Some day hopefully.

And personally, you're never too old to trick or treat. Just have fun and enjoy the free candy.

PiccoloNamek Oct 12, 2006 01:29 PM

You're never too old. You just have to make more and more mature costumes as time goes on. Although truthfully, I haven't gone since I was 14 or 15. But this year, I am going out as Pyramid Head, and I hope I can scare some people senseless!

Domino Oct 12, 2006 01:34 PM

I never started trick or treating. It just never appealed to me, even when I was a kid. And I have only ever been to one party over Halloween, and that was last year. (gotten invited again this year though :))
I've never taken to Halloween, I don't know why, but I never have.

For those who do trick or treat, I think that the time that it becomes too old is when you hit your early teens, they just look kinda stupid wandering the streets in fancy dress.

starslight Oct 12, 2006 01:36 PM

The last time I went was when I was sixteen, and even then I felt pretty self-conscious about it. Couldn't imagine going out and being any older than that.

I don't pass out candy because I don't like children all that much. I sort of feel guilty about it, though - I took all that candy when I was a little kid and now I'm not giving any back. I guess that makes me kind of an asshole.

Chibi Neko Oct 12, 2006 02:09 PM

I offically stopped when I was about 14, however on my second year at my job, my friend suggested that we go trick-or-treating for kicks, (I was 22 and she was 18 at the time) plus you can't just turn down free candy.

we did not go far though, just one block, but we did get alot of candy. I had to have been the oldest person that night trick-or-treating at 22.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Oct 12, 2006 02:10 PM

The last year I went I was 12. After that I always felt really awkward, especially since I've always been rather tall. Towering over all the other kids was just weird.

Your mom's really lame.

I think the last time I went was in high school, although we always planned to go when I was in college and it just never happened. If you've got decent enough costumes and you're polite (i.e. you don't act like teenage hoodlums) people don't seem to mind.

I don't know what I'm doing this year--probably a party. Maybe I'll find an orange bikini and paint a jack o' lantern face on my tummy.

Alice Oct 12, 2006 03:14 PM

I have to disagree with some of you. There's nothing wrong with dressing up and partying on Halloween, no matter how old you are, but trick-or-treating is a different matter. That's for the kids. A good rule of thumb is if you're post puberty you have no business trick-or-treating. At any rate don't come knocking on my door because you ain't gettin any candy from me.

nabhan Oct 12, 2006 03:20 PM

I'm fourteen and this will probably be my last year trick or treating, or my second last. I think sixteen is definitely pushing it, and so, I won't be doing it after sixteen.

Paco Oct 12, 2006 03:23 PM

I'm going to quote Lewis Black here when he says:

I realize the inherent hypocrisy of my quote since this Halloween I will be out getting drunk wearing a zoot suit with my friends in Ventura... so hA!

"Bald Asshole"? That's a hate crime!

bubbaXzone Oct 12, 2006 05:48 PM

I am 19 and I am still gonna go trick or treating this year. Some might say I have no life and that maybe true but free candy is fun and seeing everybody on the block.

I am just going to go around my block thats really it. If I dont get any candy from somone Imma just force my way in and get me some :).

hey by the way I remember seeing in gameforce a quote somone put when it was halloween to keep away the older guys. It was a saying and put it on the front of his house anybody know what it is?

Antignition Oct 12, 2006 06:33 PM

I'm surprised people actually give candy out to you people going "post-puberty." At 14 I was starting to get looks, and I was in a pretty average neighborhood.

Hell, even if I didn't get those looks that year I still would have stopped because personally I agree with them, i'd moved around a lot when I was a kid and in every neighborhood the oldest kid trick-or-treating was around 15.

fiercedeity Oct 12, 2006 06:46 PM

I think around 14-15 is too old for trick or treating but your never too old to celebrate halloween. For example, we are 21-23 in our house and are having a huge halloween party and then a horror movie-thon, and maybe a Ouija board for fun. I think Halloween is one of the best holidays of the year because it is one of the few that people actually know the meaning behind. Even christmas has little meaning left now, people just see it as a day where you get presents and eat alot, where as when I was younger we used to go to church on christmas eve.

I look forward to Halloween much more than any of the other holidays and I really hope the brits start taking more notice of the way the americans celebrate it, with decorations, spooky things and over the top ness. The British dont really over celebrate it and I think we are missing an oppurtunity because its a such a fun holiday and very interesting.

Yeldarb Oct 12, 2006 08:23 PM

I stopped when I was in fifth grade. Even then I felt awkward because I hate dressing up and talking in public anyway. I really only talk to my family and friends. I'm just an introvert and thats why I stopped and never really liked halloween trick or treating. I like the treats but not the tricks or the walking around. I'm lazy.

Rydia Oct 12, 2006 09:28 PM

I stopped going out when I was in the sixth grade. I'm not exactly sure why I didn't go during that particular year though. There were some people I knew in the past who were small despite their age, so they looked as if they could blend in with a crowd of children.

PKO Oct 12, 2006 10:13 PM

I stopped going trick-or-treating when I was around 12 or 13. I stopped because I felt stupid wearing costumes and even more stupid asking random people for something as unsatisfying and childish as candy. I mean, I'm glad kids have fun going around and getting candy but for me, it got really old really fast.

Sir VG Oct 12, 2006 10:15 PM

I say if you're old enough to buy your own candy, you're too old to trick-or-treat.

Nothing wrong with attending a Halloween Costume Party though.

*Shakes head*

I gave up in Gr. 6 or 7. Usually hauled in about 70 lbs of candy each year, but I just quit caring when I started buying my own candy. On Halloween evening, I personally whip out a giant bear statue and summon all bears across the world to maul the Christian school kids out that night.

Bredow Oct 13, 2006 12:09 AM

trick or treating is pansys

im 17, getting high on halloween, and getting mad candy

kat Oct 13, 2006 01:25 AM

I never tricked or treat, because my parents didn't know what it was :\

And I think girls have a better time justifying trick or treating as they get older since they can dress as sluts and go from house to house to score free candy.

The Wise Vivi Oct 13, 2006 01:30 AM

You know, I don't even buy candy anymore. My roomate buys and eats candy and candy bars so much, I will just knock on his door for Halloween. Saves me from having to go outside and endure the weather.

I might put on a costume still. ;)

TheKnightOfNee Oct 13, 2006 01:52 AM

Once you're in high school, you should be done trick or treating. At that point, you're too old. The candy's a treat for the little kids, and at that point and onward, you can get your own candy if you want it.

There shouldn't be an age limit on dressing up and going to a party though. The point of that is to have a party with people you know, and that doesn't take away from kids or anyone else.

I agree with this.

Celes Chere Oct 13, 2006 11:16 AM

I think I stopped around 14 but I'm not positive. I totally miss getting candy though. :(

I love handing out candy to little kids in costumes. They can be adorable. :D Teenagers who don't even dress up and walk around carrying a pillow case annoy me to no end, though.

I wish I had a little kid to take trick or treating. I always thought it was a lot of fun, but at 19, I know I'd get looks if I just went out by myself.

That's me! :/ I haven't gone trick or treating since probably the sixth grade as well. I'll still dress up for Halloween parties and such though. Those are always fun. And during college, it was all about going to haunted houses/places, both "fake" and "real" ones... ohh, scary-scary. :p

acid Oct 13, 2006 12:17 PM

I stopped when I was like 14. Any older than that and you are really pushing it. If we get anyone older than about 16 here on halloween, I won't give them jack shit. Unless ofcourse they're just taking their little brother/sister out.

And if you're over 18 (and into the 20s?! Are you people serious) and you're still out trick or treating, that's just fucking sad. Make some friends and go to a party you social misfit.

DragoonKain Oct 13, 2006 02:47 PM

I stopped when I was around 15ish. I don't not do it anymore because of etiquette, I don't do it anymore because I'm not a huge fan of chocolates and candies. But obviously a 20+ kid going to a door to get candy is still a little weird. So that plays into it too.

Phoenix X Oct 13, 2006 04:51 PM

I planned to stop at 16. I'm going out this year, #20. Screw all of you, I like candy, and dressing up like a tool. It's the one day out of the year that I get to dress as weird as I behave! :D

Actually, I like taking my nieces and nephews out every year. Hanging with them is fun as hell anyway, but it's gonna be doubly so this year, with me and my older nephew dressed as Jedis, and my brother in his killer Darth Vader get-up. :D

I refuse to grow up. :P

Draz Oct 13, 2006 11:52 PM

People should be able to go out and get free candy whenever they want! It's age discrimination to say otherwise.

I miss being able to get free candy. Now I guess I just have to buy it myself... that's a bugger, because I never liked the costume aspect... I just liked the candy.

bubbaXzone Oct 14, 2006 11:40 AM

hmm I thought of something about those 17+ kids that come to your door when your giving out candy. Do you HAVE to give them candy? or can you just send them on there way?

Cause if you send them on there way they might throw eggs at your house or silly string or shaving cream you or your property.

Summonmaster Oct 14, 2006 12:10 PM

When I move into a house one day (apartment), I would make sure to give teens candy since I'd view them all as no-goodniks out to egg/tp the house otherwise.

I stopped fairly early at 6th grade or so (10), since I never really liked the idea of trick or treating for some reason. I wouldn't see a problem with anyone in elementary school trick or treating, quite commonplace. I can see people in high school having fun still and even then only in groups, although I wouldn't be exactly down with that idea. I can imagine the outgoing uni students going in a group. If you're 30 or whatever, then you better be with a kid related to you, or you might garner some cock-eyed looks.

Krusty69 Oct 14, 2006 06:30 PM

I think it's a bit ridiculous to go trick-or-treating after the age of 14. Even then.... Lots of people refuse to give out candy to some of those older beggars. Good idea, maybe they'll stop.

When I was *forced* to answer the door during Halloween (which I'd try to ignore by just playing music REALLY loud), I hated when those 15-18 year old snobby ass white kids came by with like a fucking eye patch or a HAT on like they're in costume. GTFO.

Personally, I have no problem with people of any age trick or treating; I don't mind as long as they are in costume that is.

Myself, I trick or treated last sophomore year in high school I believe, so I was 14 or 15 when I stopped. I definently remember Halloween being serious business as a kid, such as when I dressed up as Kane in 7th grade. I saw a $50 Kane mask and I was like "MUST HAVE, MOTHER". After that I was something I don't even recall in 8th grade, and in 9th grade my 20 something brother came to visit and we went out together, which was funny. I got the "aren't you too old" even then, despite the fact that I was thirteen. Me and my brother were just going out in custom white/black makeup jobs and some random props.

I personally enjoy Halloween for more of what it inspires than what it actually is.

Furby Oct 14, 2006 09:33 PM

Personally, I never went out trick or treating... My parents were control freaks and thought I was going to get kidnapped.

But I love to dress up in costume. I have been doing it at work for the pass week. Wearing silly hats, wearing my tiger tail, etc etc just for teh hell of it and been using the excuse that it's halloween.

doodle Oct 15, 2006 12:48 PM

I'd say that you're never too old for Halloween. It's just fun. Hell, I'm planning on going trick-or-treating for cigarettes around my college. Last year a friend and I dressed up as ninjas and went around giving candy to kids shuriken-style. That was pretty awesome.

That's the spirit! :D

The last few years I went trick-or-treating, I went with an IRL friend, but he wasn't able to come the past two years... so I didn't do it then. It's not as much as fun without a friend, no matter the age (I'm 20 now).

Win! Maybe I'll do /that/ this year. :D I live out in the middle of nowhere, so no one ever comes to my house. (On the plus side, that means I can still legitimately buy a buncha candy and then keep it all when no one comes!)

Pffth. I was trick-or-treating up until the point that people were kicking my friends and I off of their doorstoops. (Age 18 or so)

Fuck, man - if you're going to hand out free food to whomever is going to walk by in costume, I am going to totally try and get in on that action. Especially when I am a starving kid whose roommate vacated while being under a lease and I am left to pay all the bills alone.

Cut me some slack.

(But yea, the worst I do now is dress up in costume and go places. Like work. -_- )

Lunar Seal Oct 16, 2006 05:18 PM

There's a difference between trick-or-treating and celebrating halloween when you're older. I stopped trick or treating when I was probably 14-15... But I'm 21 and go to halloween parties. Getting free candy is great when you're younger... but it gets lame when you get older.

Phoque le PQ Oct 16, 2006 09:06 PM

come on! what about all those geeks who dress up for comic conventions? would they be classified as too old?

That being said, I guess the only "limit" one can have for trick or treating is self inhibition :p

Krelian Oct 17, 2006 12:05 PM

Eight.

I haven't celebrated Halloween since I was eight. It's a pretty childish holiday, and it doesn't stand for shit.

JasonTerminator Oct 17, 2006 12:42 PM

If you're worried about them egging your house, answer the door with a shotgun in your hands.

If you look like you mean business, they won't dare fuck with your house.

FergyLawl Oct 17, 2006 02:53 PM

I didn't go last year.

I'm not going this year.

So I stopped when I was... 15.

But my brother still goes, so I just take his candy~ >:3
