How long could you sleep?

Well, I think I couldnt sleep more than 7 hour these days, if I cross that line I will get very terrible headache when waking up from the deep slumber. What is the longest duration you could take? Also, does anyone know why sleeping too much giving us headache when waking up?

Kazyl Sep 29, 2006 08:51 PM

I believe 16 hours was my longest. But that was probably when I was sick. I don't know about headaches but I do know that more sleep doesn't mean you'll wake up nice and refreshed.

16 hours... O.o; talk about hibernation! I forgot to mention that I also suffer low blood pressure, perhaps that is the reason I got headache every morning.

Yggdrasil Sep 29, 2006 08:58 PM

Not counting sickness the longest I could go is probably 13 hours. Although regardless of when I go to sleep if I wake up past 11 I'm not getting back to sleep until its the afternoon.

Thrik Sep 29, 2006 09:03 PM

Eight hours is pretty much the optimal number for me. Any less and I feel like I need more, but any more and I feel shanked when I get up. I can very easily manage up to 18 hours though and indeed have done in the past few weeks after missing a night of sleep. I couldn't do that without having missed a night and consequently being extremely tired though.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Sep 29, 2006 09:15 PM

My longest ever is about 21 hours, which occured right after final night at a camp I counselored at. I stayed up the last two nights, so I was pretty damn tired by the time I got home. I went to bed at 3:00 PM and didn't wake up until noon the next day.

Will Sep 29, 2006 09:15 PM

I've done twelve on more than one occasion. I know I can do more, it's just when two o'clock rolls around I know someone's gonna kick my ass out of bed and I'd rather do it on my own. I don't really do that anymore though; I tend to get around 9 hours on average, because that's what my body likes.

Adara Sep 29, 2006 09:37 PM

If left to my own devices, I would probably sleep around 9 1/2 to 10 hours and would most likely wake up feeling like crap. 8 1/2 to 9 hours is the perfect amount of sleep for me.

There is a theory by some leading sleep specialist (I can't remember his name at the moment) that most of us are so sleep deprived that when we sleep more than we're used to we wake up feeling awful because, after a full night's sleep (or more), our bodies are more fully aware of the fatigue caused by the sleep deprivation that many of us live with. I say bullcrap because I am not sleep deprived and still feel crappy when I've slept more than usual.

Elixir Sep 29, 2006 09:42 PM

I usually sleep around 10-12 hours a day. Yeah, I'm a fucking bear. But I thoroughly enjoy it.

When I'm sick I can sleep for anywhere up to 24 hours solid. In fact, I've done 24 hours exactly. My mother had to check to see if I was still alive during the day. I don't get sick very often though so sleeping that long is a pretty rare thing to have happen.

Acro-nym Sep 29, 2006 09:50 PM

I think, at most, I've done twelve hours. That span of time is usualy reserved for weekends and holidays. Normally, though, it ranges from six to eight, depending on when I go to sleep.

Eleo Sep 29, 2006 09:50 PM

I'm not a morning person. Any less than 10 and I will hate the world for about the first few hours that I'm awake. I don't really like this aspect of myself and wish I could do more on less sleep, but... I can't. My bed is just 20x comforting than anything outside of it. Would I sleep forever if I could? I dunno.

I think the longest I've slept is about 14 hours. I was sick in some type of way, I don't recall how, but I didn't want to wake up and found that I could spend the day in bed if I wanted to. I didn't really feel sick or tired, it was just that if I wanted to sleep for hours I could... I think it turned out I had strep throat (but I don't remember having a sore throat).

He sums it up for me. I can sleep all the way, as long as I have nothing important to take care off and hunger don't get to me. Sleeping is one gooood feeling.

Thrik Sep 29, 2006 09:55 PM

On a side note, a very obvious but often missed cause of wake-up headaches is dehydration, of which a headache is an extremely common symptom. Even if it means getting up for a piss later on, it's best to have at least one big glass of water before you go to sleep.

starslight Sep 29, 2006 09:58 PM

Eight hours, tops. I usually only sleep five or six hours a night. I don't have a very consistent sleep schedule - I'll go to bed somewhere between 10 PM and 2 AM and get up somewhere between 5 AM and 8 AM, even on weekends.

I'm not a morning person or anything, just never been able to sleep much. Kind of sucks because I'm tired most of the day and that makes me even less motivated than I already am.

Carpe diem lol

Rydia Sep 29, 2006 10:00 PM

I think 14 hours straight was the most I've ever slept. I had just returned from an overseas vacation and I couldn't adjust my hours yet. These days, my average is somewhere between 6-8 hours of sleep.

Servilonus Sep 29, 2006 10:31 PM

I've rarely slept much longer than 12 hours, 14 has got to be the most I've ever been asleep for, but I honestly can't remember all that well. Nowadays at college I usually get anywhere between 6-8 hours of sleep, depending on my schedule.

I have noticed on days where I sleep in later (like weekends) I feel terrible when I get up.

Basil Sep 29, 2006 11:41 PM

At the most I've probably done 10-11 hours, and that's the max I can ever do, at least at this point.

My dad told me a story about how he slept one night on a Saturday and then woke up the next Monday afternoon. He thought it was Sunday, so he was all "why the fuck are there so many people eating on a Sunday?" when he went to work that day. Kinda sad but funny at the same time.

Celes Chere Sep 29, 2006 11:52 PM

I always sleep a lot. I probably have some sort of problem I'm unaware of or something. The most I've ever slept? Probably around 20 hours. I need to set an alarm or have one of my parents wake me up or I WILL sleep all day. And when I wake up I feel terrible. :(

IdentikitOfEyes Sep 30, 2006 12:14 AM

I can sleep 18 hours each day when I am not busy. I can even break it down to vampireism and sleep up to 22 hours with out being sick.

Darkcomet72 Sep 30, 2006 12:29 AM

11 hours max. I have never slept anywhere longer than that, and if I did, I would scold myself with random clobbering material, as I absolutely detest sleeping for too long. I love to stay up late and wake up early, though I'm aware that this isn't always possible for me :(

Tizzler Sep 30, 2006 12:43 AM

20 hours when I get depressed. I have about 2 hr sleep cycle so any number divisible by 2 starting at 6 on up will allow me to wake up and function without falling on my face. 6 hours and 12 hours are my optimum times.

Domino Sep 30, 2006 07:20 AM

The most that I sleep is around 12 hours. This is reserved for the weekend though. During the week I am only able to manage 10 at the most.

xSummonerYUnax Sep 30, 2006 07:29 AM

My longest sleep was 9 hours. On average, I only reach a max of 7-8 hours of sleep since I'm so used to waking up early.

cubed Sep 30, 2006 08:45 AM

I have trouble sleeping. I can't sleep more than 5 hours straight. I always manage to wake up for a couple of minutes (even happened to be couple hours a few times), then get back to sleep for maybe another 4-5 hours. I always end up being tired all day long, hoping I might finally get a 8-hour straight sleep tonight, in vain.

I'm a 10-hourer, too. And all three of my children are the same way. If I get ANY fewer than eight hours I will feel crappy and tired all day. Sleep is my favorite thing ever. <3

Roph Sep 30, 2006 09:28 AM

Maybe 4 or 5, but I've been doing it for a long time so I'm pretty used to it.

Rarely, (usually on holidays) I'll pull a 12-14 hour slumber.

Infernal Monkey Sep 30, 2006 09:33 AM

TWENTY FOUR HOURS. My awake state is basically the same as being asleep.

Spoiler:
I dunno, I've slept up to twelve hours when sick. I've been going off very little sleep lately and I've always hated waking late, unlike sane people who hate waking early. It all sort of works out I suppose.

nazpyro Sep 30, 2006 09:39 AM

The longest I've slept was 12 hours. I don't remember when the last time I did this at home was, but I did it recently on a flight from San Francisco to New Zealand.

In high school, I usually got 5-6 hours of sleep. In my first 2 years of college, about 2-4 hours, then when I moved to an apartment, I got about 6-8 hours.

Now with my 40+hour week and all, it's pretty much between 5 hours of sleep a night. I can't even catch up on weekends anymore; after about 6 hours, I'm pretty much up now. AND HYPER.

ramoth Sep 30, 2006 08:53 PM

12 hours is nothing. Just today I slept for 13. I can easily sleep many more than that, up to 16 or 18. I don't think I've ever slept more than 24 hours, but I've definitely slept long enough that it was dark when I went to sleep and dark when I woke up, and there had been a period of light in between.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Sep 30, 2006 08:57 PM

I've slept for at least 36 hours before. I was feeling pretty craptacular and decided that it'd be a swell thing if I just didn't move for a day and a half.

I awoke feeling somewhat better. I got up, showered, ate something, looked around online, then went to take a nap.

Too much sleep makes you tired.

Erisu Kimu Oct 1, 2006 12:49 AM

The longest I've slept was probably 13-14 hours and that was when I wasn't sick. It's just that I have a hard time getting up unless the alarm clock goes off. I just tend to fall deeply asleep and could push it longer if I wanted to. It might be the coziness of the bed or just plain laziness.

Spatula Oct 1, 2006 01:10 AM

If I were really that lazy and didn't want to do anything during the day, I could probably sleep from 10 PM to about 12 PM the next day, about 14 hours, but usually that's pretty rare for me. If I were absolutely exhausted, then I could probably do 20 hours.

The Wise Vivi Oct 1, 2006 01:29 AM

I have pushed about 13 to 14 hours of sleep. Especially when the bed is comfortable, and I have been totally worked out. It really helps when I have nothing better to do the next day...

One time, I slept for 12 hours, and it was the best sleep I had ever had! The bed was AWESOME as well.

Phoque le PQ Oct 1, 2006 05:20 PM

under 8 hours, I get really sleepy in a day. it's annoying during classes

daguuy Oct 1, 2006 09:57 PM

when i don't have to get up, i usually sleep around 11 hours, sometimes 12 or 13. when i have something going on the next day, i usually get around 9 hours. i love to sleep, i think i could sleep right now. i sleep alot in school as well

*AkirA* Oct 1, 2006 10:22 PM

I can be happy with very little sleep, but I can also sleep for 12 and 13 hours at a time.

If I sleep over 8 hours, I will wake up every other hour, but Its not hard to fall back asleep.

Lipid Oct 1, 2006 10:48 PM

I rarely get more than 6 hours of sleep. In fact... I'm gonna go get my 6 hours now! G'night everyone x_X

CLOudkiller Oct 1, 2006 10:53 PM

Usually about 6 or so hours on a normal day(wish i could get more). On weekends/holidays I can do 13-16 hours of sleep assuming I was tired the day before. If not then I say about 10hrs.

Golfdish from Hell Oct 1, 2006 11:49 PM

Ideally, I'm good on 6-7 hours. When I'm real tired, I do 12 if I have nothing planned the next day. In extreme cases (read:little to no sleep for days at a time), I've done close to 24 hours. Just wake up occasionally and go right back to sleep for several more hours. I've only done that, like, once or twice though.

TheKnightOfNee Oct 2, 2006 12:30 AM

If I fall asleep, I am guaranteed 10 hours of sleep, at least. And that's even when I don't want to sleep that long. The longest I've ever done is 20 hours, and that was just after staying up one night. I've never tried staying up two nights in a row, I imagine I would not awake for quite some time if I did.

Waking up is not a fun thing for me to do. It is next to impossible for me to actually wake up in under ten hours. The only proven method so far seems to be someone hitting me over and over. Once, when I lived in the dorms, I woke up and there was broken glass on my desk. I asked my roommate what happened, and he said when my alarm went off, I hopped out of bed with my eyes closed, ran to my desk, waved my arms at everything until the alarm went off, then ran back into bed. I had no memory of it, as I was still asleep. I've also apparently just slept through the sound of my alarm entirely (and I own one of those extra-loud ones). I miss tons of class because of this, and have accidentally slept through three exams in as many years of college because I went to bed within ten hours of when I was supposed to get up.

Shoops Oct 2, 2006 09:26 AM

The longest for me was 15 hours when i'm very tired, usually i sleep around 6,7 hours.

Krelian Oct 2, 2006 09:39 AM

Longest I've ever been unconscious was two days. Longest I've actually slept is 22 hours.

I usually get four or five hous a night, except on Saturday - I get an hour's lie-in on Sundays so I get maybe six or seven if I head to bed early.

Chibi Neko Oct 2, 2006 09:58 AM

My work days are the usual 7-8 hours, my days off can be up to 10, however the most that I have ever pulled off was 24 hours or so, I was working on overnights at the time and I was sick, I fell asleep on my night off at midnight, and did not wake up the next night for me to go to work.

First question: I believe the longest I've slept has been 18 hours straight.

Second question:

A) Possibly because you dream too hard.
B) You think too hard while sleeping.

ionuk tomb Oct 2, 2006 04:49 PM

I think somewhere around 14-16 hours is my max. normally. Although when I got my appendix taken out and was in the hospital for 2 weeks, I slept many 20 hour periods and even a few 24 hour periods.

eq2d Oct 3, 2006 02:14 AM

Sometimes I dont sleep 3 days... my body dont want sleep or eat, but sometimes i sleep (like child) 16-22 hours. Maybe I'm sick? ;)

My friend record - 28 hours ! O_o This guy is sick! ;)

Dekoa Oct 5, 2006 12:16 AM

I, have a somewhat normal college life sleeping style. I can stay up to usually 1:30 before I have to go to bed and I wake up at 7 AM. Another thing is that I can sleep for about 10 hours on the weekends. I love my sleeping style cause I just have to let my mind wonder and then I can go to sleep.

Marina Oct 9, 2006 07:52 AM

The longest is 2 days (When I was 6 yr and have high fever that I lost my conscious)
Usually I can't sleep more than 7 hr becuase I'll automatically wake up. One day I didn't sleep at all beacuse writing report and in the next night I still wake up at usuall time (that I still tire but can't sleep at all :p)

Nowsaday I've to wake up 6.00 am everyday wheter it's a Sat or Sunday. T-T

Vemp Oct 9, 2006 08:31 AM

I can sleep up to 14 hours max. But usually I sleep between 4-6 hours.

Sleep is overrated anyway. Just like water and clothes.

Krusty69 Oct 9, 2006 08:36 AM

I get 8-10 hours of sleep on a regular basis, though I have slept for 18-20 in the past. I agree with Crash, too much sleep just makes you tired.

ambience Oct 9, 2006 10:10 AM

The longest I've slept was around 22 hours one summer. I turn nocturnal when I'm home for the summer, so it was in a series of transitional slumbers the week before school started again.

I'm used to sleeping from 8 to 10 hours a night, but since I've started college about a month ago, I've only been able to manage 6-7 hours a night. It's been very unsettling.

Summonmaster Oct 9, 2006 10:11 AM

I can go for a mere 12 hours, and that's when I've been really tired from staying up late the night before last and waking up early the previous day. I always make myself get up if I'm nearing 12 hours since sleeping too much tends not to give me a headache, but has that paralyzing effect of making your body so sluggish that even getting up is a chore. If I were to stay in bed any longer, it would become progressively harder to try and get up.

Meth Oct 9, 2006 12:14 PM

This is one of those threads that nobody ever directly replies to anything save for the first post. How strange.

Once, on a regular basis my younger brother was going to bed around midnight and waking up at 3:30-4pm the next day. I'm guessing he was on a growth spurt or something.

Knight_Rider Oct 13, 2006 09:04 PM

To be completely honest, you throw me into a comfy bed and I can sleep for days. Seriously.

Draz Oct 13, 2006 11:23 PM

I miss the days of my youth. I used to be able to go days without sleep, and then only zone out for a couple hours before returning to a coherent state of consciousness for more gaming. Now, I sleep far too much - longest was only ever like, 18 hours though.

The real question is, how long can everyone go without sleep?

BIGWORM Oct 14, 2006 12:09 AM

2 days here.

Muzza Oct 14, 2006 12:20 AM

The longest I've slepped was about 15 hours I think. I hadn't slept too well the few prior nights so sleeping so well came as a realy shock for me. Lucky it wasn't a school day...

On average, I sleep about 8-9 hours, however I'd love to get more. In the holidays I get about 11 hours a day.
