Threads you avoid.

You ever see a thread, and sometimes just by the title you say to yourself FUCK THIS. Any specific threads you avoid, or do you sometimes choose to avoid threads based on other factors?

There are two I will, nine times out of ten, avoid at all costs. Debate threads on Religion and homosexuality. ESPECIALLY the ones that combine both topics. You can say what you want, but even with the best intentions the damned things always get ugly. There`s no winning, no changing anyone`s mind, so I`ve just stayed away since year one.

Then there are those threads that I find too late. Example, after 9/11 I came here about five hours later and found a thread on 9/11 with some five hundred posts. It was a sickening number. Because I have to read EVERY post, I was thinking about going through that thread when someone mentioned in GFChat (in those days it was an AIM chatroom) that CainEJW was being an absolute retard in that thread. That was enough for me. I never even saw the first post in that thread. The recent thread that made me feel this way was the one made after bobo temporarily shutdown Gamingforce. I just didn`t want to get started.

No. Hard Pass. Sep 27, 2006 04:47 PM

I've gotta be honest here, OO. Pretty much anything you make I avoid. They just seem like the same thing we've discussed a thousand times before. And I'm not saying it to be a dick, but you just make so many of them and they're all so mundane.

Tawnee Van Pelt Sep 27, 2006 04:48 PM

Let alone threads, I skip entire forums like Political Palace and the Sports Forum (I don't even remember it's name).

Krelian Sep 27, 2006 04:50 PM

This o- OH WAIT.

I skip the politics forum because I hate e-debates unless they involve me in some way, and I don't really participate in the dramathons GFF likes so much - I get enough of it elsewhere on the internet.

Dubble Sep 27, 2006 04:54 PM

I've only ever posted in Political Palace once. Its not my cup of tea at all. And I dont think I've ever visited the sports forum once since I've been here.

I like OO's threads personally. They give me something to talk about and chat in the forums when the topic is of interest to me. Not everyone has been here long enough to discuss the "same old things" you know... =\

Bernard Black Sep 27, 2006 05:07 PM

I don't usually avoid particular thread titles, or whole forums either, because the titles can be misleading. If it's about something I have no experience or knowledge in (sports and politics at the pinnacle of my list here) I usually leave it well alone. Sometimes I might read over a thread so I can learn something new, but I'd never throw myself into a discussion or make a contribution if I had no idea at all what I was talking about.

Fatt Sep 27, 2006 05:16 PM

I usually avoid the political palace all together, as about 35% of the people don't even know what they are talking about, and few actually have an interesting opinion to begin with.

I also decided to avoid threads that are utterly foolish to begin with. I used to like the city streets, but now their are so many angsty trolls that cry themselves to sleep that I just don't bother anymore.

Acro-nym Sep 27, 2006 05:16 PM

I try to avoid the Sewers and Political Palace. I have no interest in posting in the Sony or Xbox boards.

Specific threads I try to avoid at least posting in are ones with videos or images that aren't really funny, ones on things I've never heard of or that I don't find interested (I'm thinking Media Centre), and generally where the thread itself, and hence the people posting within it, seems obnoxious.

Kolba Sep 27, 2006 05:34 PM

Well sometimes I come to gamingforce after an absence and check my user cp for subscribed threads with new activity. I end up going into one and thinking "this is shit, I absolutely do not care what any of these people have to say about this subject", and end up wondering why I was interested in the thread in the first place. It's worse when I realise I made the thread.

Lunar Seal Sep 27, 2006 05:39 PM

Almost anything with the words "depressed" "emo" or "suicide" in the title.

Honestly, it's not that I have anything against people with problems, I just never have any good advice to give... so I try and stay away from those threads.

Such a Lust for Revenge! Sep 27, 2006 05:52 PM

I understand what you`re saying, Denicalis. It just gets to the point where there`s not much new to talk about and everything seems the same. In the end you can leave those threads to people that haven`t been here that long. While some threads get recycled, the new people`s answers to those same threads always remain fresh. That`s why I pull some of those GF Classics out of the closet once in a while.

I completely avoid Political Palace too, come to think of it. The last time I posted there, steadily, was a good four years ago. The effort just isn`t worth it to me, everyone that frequents it seems too fucking serious or tainted with this goofy anger that sticks with them even when they post in the kitchen forum.

Haha. Irony!

As for me, I've been trying to stay out of the drama, as best I can, anyway. Other than that, I click on what sounds interesting, or is generating a lot of interest. Fun times.

Elixir Sep 27, 2006 06:06 PM

I avoid the Political Palace like the plague. Ugh. That, and the Quiet Place, Sports and Food forums. if I get myself involved in the food forums I naturally wouldn't ever leave them alone for five minutes.

The "View New Posts" button seems to get alot of use from me. Recently I've started ignoring the Microsoft and DDR/Music in Games/Whatever forums because they're dead beyond repair as well.

For once, you and I have something in common. I mean, I like a good political debate once in a while, but I usually hold those with my closest cohorts where I can at least get a stern word in without too many raised eyebrows. The Political Palace is pretty much the polar opposite of equal debate. It's kind of like watching CNN, only with much less bigotry.

Quiet Place has its purpose and while most people in there are just pointlessly angsting about how the sun didn't shine brightly enough there's usually a few worthwhile threads in there that discuss other things besides HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN TO MEEEEEEEEEEE!?

The sports forums I usually stay out of unless a huge sporting event is going down; case in point: World Cup.

I LOVE food threads though, since I'm always up to learning new edible delicacies from the community. Yes, that includes fries with mayo~

No, no. I get that. Like I said, I avoid them. I don't expect everyone to do the same.

Wall Feces Sep 27, 2006 07:02 PM

The only places I really avoid would be the Help Desk and the Kitchen, but that's only because I have no vested interest in any of those. Everything else is on level ground with me.

PiccoloNamek Sep 27, 2006 07:12 PM

I avoid the Political Palace like the plague.

nuttyturnip Sep 27, 2006 07:31 PM

I've never actually been in The Concert Hall. Nice people, I'm sure, but if you don't play an instrument and aren't looking for sheet music, what's the point?

And yes, there's no point in bothering with Political Palace these days.

Kolba Sep 27, 2006 07:33 PM

Guys, why have you got it in for the plague so much? The plague's never done me any harm. I won't have a bad word said about the plague.

Now - Political Palace. I avoid it like man cock.

*AkirA* Sep 27, 2006 07:53 PM

Animespot in general. Some of the people who post in there are just too fucking lame.

"Holy shit, check out my Evangelion keychain!"
"Awesome!"

Summonmaster Sep 27, 2006 09:06 PM

I avoid a lot of the forums now that I look at it:
Media Centre - I don't really care much for the latest movies or mainstream cds
Political Palace - Lots of debating, which I know I can't hold up a valid argument for if I ever took a side on any issue, not being currently aware of most events.
Angst - Pretty much every subforum feels like extra work to get to, despite being single clicks away.
Creator's Cafe - Far from being an artist, and unfortunately, I'm too lazy to look at other people's wonderful creations on a regular basis, as all I'd provide is an uninformed critique
Sports Page - I've never liked sports at all
The Kitchen - Talking about food seems to bore me
The Place of Laughs and Games - I'm not the type that wants to invest time clicking on a video or picture link. Humour is always person-specific anyways, so I'm scared that it'll be a corny kind o fhumour that doesn't appeal to me.
Testing Forum - (Now) I feel like a spammer when posting in it (save for the "Let's make a thread with the most posts on GFF topic").
Microsoft's Window - Never had an Xbox and never will
Request Forums - Leeching days are over save for a couple of rare circumstances

As for threads, I don't like the most popular ones with the most replies since the last post usually never relates to pure discussion by the time I check them out. eg. The Wii thread, PSP Discussion thread, etc.

Unless I really like a particular game (eg. Okami, Disgaea 2), then I'll avoid many of the game threads since they're usually conjecture when the game isn't out yet, and after it is out, I realize that I'm not quite so interested, or thread activity dies.

Congle line of abuse. Or is that conga-line. Or congaline. Sep 27, 2006 09:14 PM

I avoid any thread that mentioned the Plague more than once. Also PP cause I don't wanna look the fool.

Infernal Monkey Sep 27, 2006 09:15 PM

Only time I've been in the Political Palace was sometime last year to close some bizarre thread when nobody else was around. You guys can drink all the oil you want! I don't care!

Edit: WHAT MY BROWSER CRAPPED ITS PANTS AND POSTED THIS BEFORE I EVEN FINISHED TYPING EVERYTHING. I think I'm gonna have to go whinge about this in ANGST! now guys. I'm so close to the edge. So close..

Arkhangelsk Sep 27, 2006 09:30 PM

In general, I avoid threads with three or more pages of response. I mean, come on. I'm not going to read through all those posts, and my post will probably get lost in the shuffle if it doesn't pertain to what's currently being discussed in the thread from earlier posts.

And there are forums that I completely ignore, mostly the Political Palace. I'm just not very 'up' on my politics these days, and I don't have the time to devote to crafting arguments for online debates.

Radez Sep 27, 2006 09:43 PM

Haha Kolba's like "Why the plague, plague never hurt me none. Now man cock I avoid." Thereby implying of course that man cock has somehow done injury to poor Kolba. Ah well, here's to gay rape. <3

I avoid threads in PP where the titles deal with topics about which I know nothing. It's too bad others aren't the same way. Also in the quiet place, threads about young romance are boring.

Spatula Sep 27, 2006 09:51 PM

Media Centre - I'm not up to date much on "pop culture" or the lastest western bands nor movies. I just watch whatever comes out on theatres some of the time, but don't really feel inclined to post about it. Of course I do have a very limited number of posts there just to ask general questions.

Political Palace - Lord Styphon lives there.*

Quiet Place - I don't avoid this so much as I really don't care much for it, and don't have anything "quiet like" to say.

Kitchen - isn't this ironic. I'm not much of a chef extraordinare, therefore I must be a faulty spatula in the first place.

Sports Back Page - not much of a sports fan. Oh Sharks are with Flames tonight, LOL.

*Lord Styphon lives everywhere on GFF; it just seems PP is his nest, besides animespot.

Haha, I know. I didn`t take anything personally. Don`t worry. If I had, you`d know because of the twenty some odd threads with your name in the title.

Nehmi Sep 28, 2006 11:40 AM

I'd like to say I avoid all of them... but then I'd be lying since I just posted in this one. :tpg:

If I really don't care about something (which is a lot), or it would be a bother to post in it, I just read the thread and go on my way. Guess thats what makes me a good lurker.

nazpyro Sep 28, 2006 12:15 PM

The only forum I've never posted in my almost-5 years here is the Political Place. Everywhere else I'll go, though lately I haven't been in the Sewers or any of the Gamingforce Audio or Trading forums either. I used to be in there a lot more when I shared my FTP server here. I'm not in TQP much, but I'll look around sometimes. And in the Creators' Cafe I really only check to see if vemp posted some boobs, which he hasn't done lately. I also haven't been in the Music Game place for a while since I haven't played once since Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan almost exactly a year ago.

I poked it and it made a sad sound Sep 28, 2006 12:26 PM

I actively avoid most of Gamingforce. Which is rather strange, considering. I only hang out in the journals and a few select forums on the "top section" of GFF, with few exceptions. I usually frequent the Sewers and Community, with some stops in between.

But yea - most of the gaming and audio forums I avoid. Sometimes when I get bored, I'll visit the Help Desk and OS forums.

Domino Sep 28, 2006 01:09 PM

Well I stay out of the political place, quite place, creators cafe and all of the audio and trading forums. I also stear clear of the microsoft and music game forums. All of these forums are home to things that have no or little interest to me.

RacinReaver Sep 28, 2006 01:27 PM

All this hating on Political when hardly anyone posts there anymore (I see more new posts in the Kitchen every day than Political). :(

I'll usually avoid Media Center, Anime, and gaming forums other than Sony since I don't own other consoles and my PC's too old to care about new games. Sometimes I'll drop into Community, but for some reason I've never been able to get into any of the threads there, so it's usually only opened when I'm really bored. I guess I also don't go to the Sewers that often since I usually don't find most of the humor there very funny.

doodle Sep 28, 2006 02:36 PM

Anything where I smell a flamewar. Because I'm a pitiful debator.

Congle line of abuse. Or is that conga-line. Or congaline. Sep 28, 2006 03:36 PM

You can't post in PP cause most people look the fool and their threads get closed. Granted, most of those threads are pretty foolish, but everyone there is so intelligent and better than me (me: everyone).

You win, PP, you win.

Eleo Sep 28, 2006 05:54 PM

I generally avoid Political Palace threads. I rarely have anything to say in those threads, and when I do it just starts a huge debate and I hate debates because I'm always thinking the opposite of what everyone else is thinking, and 9/10 times I just get teamed up on and it's not even fun.

Also, I don't care for anyones Welcome Welcome thread. Really could care less who signed up here.

Servilonus Sep 29, 2006 10:52 PM

I usually just stick to the upper forums in general, and like most people, I stay away from PP. I used to go into Animespot from time to time, but I'm not really that actively into anime anymore (and I can't use bittorrent at my school anyway). For the most part, I stay in GD, CC (both of em), MC and the Sewers.

I actually LIKE OOs threads for the most part, as they usually incite some interesting stories, particularly the Sewers ones. Like Deni said, they are a bit hackneyed in topic, but with new members, there's always new content.

Dogen Sep 30, 2006 11:01 AM

I seem to be avoiding most threads. On a lot of occasions when I want to add something specific, it's often already been brought up by someone else earlier in the thread, and why repeat it.

More specifically there are the favourite threads, which are fine occasionally. But once I’ve thought of my favourite whatever, I just can’t go through the task of explaining why, again and again, and usually just vacate.

So my contribution has been minimal.

Same here. Specifically those two.... Political.... on the rare occasion, I will go to... but rarely post.

I usually go to closed threads, to find out why they were closed.

Whatever had a cool title, I usually at least click. Most of the time I click on threads that I would most likely have a chance to reply to.

Elixir Oct 1, 2006 01:41 AM

The problem with the Political Palace is that you can't look at somebody sideways without someone slandering you for doing so.

Politics just shouldn't be discussed period, since most of it's just speculation and personal perspectives, and nothing is rarely set in set in stone.

The Wise Vivi Oct 1, 2006 01:45 AM

Think so? At the very least you can get some differential opinions without trying to kill them afterwards... (Or during I guess.)

Jan Oct 2, 2006 10:43 AM

I could post anywhere really but I avoid topics in General Discussion.

Couldn't avoid this great topic of avoiding topics eh?

--

Come to think of it.... I completely avoid the sewers.... mainly because when I first came on here, everyone told me to avoid them... I don't think I have ever clicked on it....:eyebrow:

Dalkaen Oct 2, 2006 06:41 PM

I guess I technically browse all the forums, and none of them. I almost never click a specific forum to check it. I usually just browse New Posts.

As for specific threads... I try to avoid the ones that I think will traumatize me in the Sewers. I don't always succeed.
