Dreamcast Love it or hate it?
The simplest question in the world, did you love it or hate it?
I, in fact, loved the Dreamcast.... I thought when the PS2 came out, the Dreamcast was the better system. Unfortuantly, it seemed like Saturn all over again when it discontinued.... I liked it because of the great games on it, and most of the games were pretty good. |
DC lover. And I'm just shaking my head at Sega's decision to kill it. It could have been great competition... people were buying it! And it was definitly a system for skilled players, with it's unique processor that makes games harder the more you play it(think Tekken 5 if it was still around, or SCIII). A decent size like the Gamecube, and I liked the VMU interface.
|
*Is now playing Chao Adventure on him VMU*
I hate to say it.... but I liked Sonic Shuffle *is shot* Yeah, it seemed like a really bad choice to kill the system, maybe Sega was planning a 'merger' with Nintendo all along, lolz. *Shot for conspiracy* Ow... Yeah, I loved the fun filled games in it... Power Stone, Power Stone 2, Fur Fighters, Ready to Rumble 2... Sonic Adventure 1 and 2... MDK 3, The whole Sega Sports line.... DAVE MIRRA FREESTYLE BMX...... I'd go on and on, but I'd drive myself insane with fun. |
I love the DC, however it was no match for the PS2. People were burned by Sega, the PS2 had DVD playback, it had a large licensee backing, it had Madden, and it was more powerful.
I certainly didn't think it was that much more powerful at the time, but developers eventually tapped into it. A shame it died, but at least it happened. |
Yeah, better for something to happen then not at all... Unless it's something bad, of course, lolz. Still I think the Dreamcast had an awesome Good game to Bad game ratio... A lot of games on the Dreamcast were hits.

The system was great. The games were pretty novel at the time. The problem?
http://www.futura-online.com/e-tiend...controller.jpg You better believe it. |
That's why you should've bought the one I had... It had replacement LR Buttons above the ABXY button part...
Interestingly enough, I didn't have a problem with the controller that much... |
Most people who played NiGHTs into Dreams for the Saturn (and got the analog controller with their game) were already geared and ready to use that kind of controller on the Dreamcast, but it just really didn't flow too well with me when I played with it. For all intents and purposes, the Dreamcast controller to me at least is the worst of them all.
Most will tell you that it was the original XBOX controller before the S-series launched, but at least MS fixed that with the S-series quick enough. |

I didn't even hold a Saturn Controller till AFTER I got my Dreamcast. Still though, it was fun to hit my friends on the head when they were being cheap, lolz....
|
The Saturn controllers, especially the second design release that began when they started to give out the three free games with the Saturn purchase (at least as I know it in the US) was one of the sexiest controller designs I've ever had the pleasure of using. It worked with literally every game you played on the Saturn and it did it well.
Sega didn't do that for the Dreamcast though, which kinda sucked. |
Since I only played PSO, Capcom vs. SNK and Grandia II on DC, the controller was alright for the most part. The N64 controller gets no love from me(except with Wave Race). The Saturn had a sad sad fate, this baby was released at the wrong time... still I will cherish the memories Virtue Cop and Panzer Dragoon gave me.
|
How can you hate the Dreamcast?
Of course here it didn't get much support, VMU's weren't released until 5 months after the console was released on the 4th of December, 1999. The whole online thing was quickly dismissed as well. That didn't bother me though, because Soul Calibur was amazing. This was the only console that I bothered to buy at launch along with Soul Calibur and Sonic Adventure. And it still is amazing, actually. If you compare it to Tekken 4/5, Dead or Alive 3/4, it's aged very well. If Sega hadn't of pulled the console so soon I'm sure we would have seen more games, but that's all in the past now. The only games you'll see on the Dreamcast are shooters every 6 months. |
Believe it or not, I've seen some people that HATE the Dreamcast A LOT.... I don't understand it, either...

The Playstation was nearing its end, and people were gearing up for the next generation which Dreamcast kicked off. The DC was only out for 15 months before the PS2 came out, yet it failed to gain enough momentum to counteract it. The PS2 sold like hotcakes, leaving the DC in the dust. Regardless, you can say Sony was dominating everyone. |

http://www.geocities.com/dollydeux/c...Controller.jpg Anyway, I'm a Dreamcast fan as well, even though I got burned paying $250 for it a whole six months before they decided to stop hardware production. The Capcom games on that thing alone were worth it, but Sonic Adventure? Grandia 2? Ikaruga? SWIRL? Hell yes. |

Oh and the flawless Master System emulator. :dopey_love: |
I liked the dreamcast quite a bit, but everytime I bought one the controller ports would just stop working and I didn't know how to fix them so the system just sort of died on me.
The games I remember playing most on that system was a game I bought soley for graphics at the time- Blue Stinger. I loved that game, I played it so damn much it was crazy, of course it got a bunch of terrible reviews but there was something about it that I liked. The graphics were good at the time, the controls were okay but it just made for a fun time. NFL 2K and House of the Dead II were also played a lot. How I miss those times. Now we have 2K5 and House of the Dead III with 2 combined into it so I shouldn't complain, but being 12/13 playing games like that at home was a dream. |
I loved mine for one reason: Fighting games. It's still the only console with a good home version of Marvel vs Capcom 2 (and 1, for that matter), the ONLY one with Project Justice, and it played host to Street Fighter 3 (the first and second ones actually haven't been ported to any other system), Capcom vs SNK 2, Guilty Gear X and several cool SNK fighters before they (or their various sequels) were ported to other systems or emulated competently. The Dreamcast Agetec stick is still my preferred fighting stick and I'm amazed the one I have has lasted as long as it has.
I personally never got much out of the rest of the DC's library. Skies and Grandia 2 were nice RPG's, it had some great arcade racers (Hydro Thunder was something I bought at launch), some cool arcade conversions (shmups, Cannon Spike, Crazy Taxi and Mr. Driller!) and Sonic Adventure was...decent at best. I mean, it was only around for about a year and a half, so it's unfair to base it off the PS2's library, but there was still the issue of the controller (WTF were they thinking?) and I would have liked to see some hint of the Sakura Wars games or even Segagaga. But overall, I understand the business decision of what happened...3rd parties gave up on the system once PS2 was out. It never sold well in Japan and pirated games effectively stopped it from ever turning a profit (since hardcore gamers were the system's core audience and probably the ones most knowledgable about making copies). It never had support from EA and Square. Basically, it got killed by the Sony hype machine and by lack of foresight on Sega's own designers (I don't see how Japanese gamers would have ever taken to the controller, given the massive size...And amazingly, Sega didn't learn a thing from the whole Sega vs Accolade mess). All in all, I got my money's worth and it was a decent run. It did succeed in making the PS2 look very bad at launch, as there was absolutely ziltch worth playing, compared to the relatively rich DC lineup. |
I liked DC for it's fighting games and Sonic Adventure 2 which, IMHO, is one of the best Sonic games to date just shy of StH2. The controller though, was a letdown, esp. with playing AHVB vs. Capcom 2 as Infernal Monkey put it. I was Magneto, using the claw method for Rom Infs, rendering the partner B button useless. The 2 games I picked up (like 95% of everyone else) when I bought the system was Sonic Adventure and Soul Calibur a month after the system released. I thoroughly enjoyed Power Stone (2 was a little too overkill for me), Project Justice, Ikaruga, Alien Front Online, PSO, Shenmue I and II (imported from EU), KOF2002, Seaman (Leonard Nimoy ftw). Now that I think about it, I was suprised that the DC's 56k modem could handle heavy traffic from PSO, AFO, and even the 2K series...not only that, but VOIP as well with Alien Front Online. Was the Broadband Adapter ever released? You must've been a god among men if you had one of those.
|
DC ftw. Really enjoyed watching my brother play it, our television had really bad picture, but yup *thums up* from me :D
|
I loved my dreamcast. I loved playing shenmue 1 and 2 forr countless hours and awaiting news for a shenmue 3 ;_;.
Dreamcast was my party system, me and my friends would gather and play power stone, spawn demon hand, quake 3, doa and some other games I dont remember. The biggest problem with dreamcast other than the controller was when you popped in a game and then when it reads the disc it would make some very loud scratch noises. It didn't scratch my disc but it was like the dc needed glasses cause it was trying so heard to read them or something. I just put a pile of clothes on top of it (especially during the morning) to shut it the fuck up. Not for long though otherwise it would have overheated. I was saddened to hear that they gave up on it, so many dreams lost;-; |
<3
So many impressive games like Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue 2, Ikaruga - I still have my DC and my VGA adapter - maybe I´ll just hook it up to my monitor and play a round of Sonic Adventure 2. :D |
I borrowed one off my cousin (he wanted my Playstation to host a Command & Conquer Multiplayer). I only played Sould Calibur on it, I quite enjoyed it at the time, but I have since played other games on the DC and wasn't all that interested in them or the console itself.
|
Ah, yes... Sonic Adventure 2, I remember going online with that and getting rare chao eggs, because I had all of the emblems at that time. Anyone else thought it was funny that you could play as BIG the cat in it, and Big's random cameos, when they took him out of SA2:B almost completely?

Yeah, it (The Jaguar Controller) was an interesting idea... But, it failed completely...
Like so much other things. |
I <3 it. In fact, I bought brand-new unopened one off Ebay just a couple months ago, and hunted down about 15 games for it. To say the least, DC has the best version of Rayman 2, which is one of the best platformers in history.
The DC had many innovations: -Memory card slot moved to the controller: each controller has 2 memory card slots, and there's native support for up to 4 controllers, so that equals 8 total memory card slots. -Built-in modem: Even the PS2 and GC which came after had no built-in Internet support -First major system release (I think?) with a built-in cooling fan: Hardcore! -The GD-ROM: although it didn't work, the anti-piracy theory of using a different format could have worked in future variations... -The VMU: mini-games and the ability to see things your fellow couch-potatoes can't, such as which play you will execute in a sports game, etc. I know there's more, but that's what I can think of off the top of my head... Ah, the Dreamcast. The typical case of console being pushed into mud by hype only even though it was leagues ahead of the competition. It was a wonderful console with some truly peerless games, but unfortunetaly Metal Gear Solid 2 completely disabled it from the market. SEGA being completely retarded at selling a console didnt help either - I can't think up any of the well executed things from their previous generation that they repeated, only their faults.
A great loss for gaming, since the machine could've been kept alive up to this day by a smarter, perhaps richer company. It was certainly powerful enough to be so. |
Dreamcast...love it, and still play it. I only have 6 games for it, plus the demo discs that I received in my monthly Dreamcast magazine. I got Sonic Adventure on launch day and damn it was it awesome. The last game I got on that system was Sonic Adventure 2. I still play both games to this day (and a little Sonic Shuffle when I'm feeling like it) because they are two of the greatest games not only on the Dreamcast, but from the entire Sonic series.
Controller: Didn't have a single problem with it. VMU screen was freakin awesome and the controller was pretty neat. No problems at all. I still think that it could've competed with PS2, Cube, and XBox. Honestly what I think really killed the Dreamcast was the fact that it didn't support DVD playback while the PS2 did. Back then, DVD Players were very expensive. PS2, while still expensive, you could have DVD playback at a less expensive price. Dreamcast was the last game system I ever pre-ordered. Sega did it's launch completely right. 9/9/99...good launch of games...Dreamcast is truly a gem. I still love it. |
I used to hate it, especially since it didn't disprove Sega's console failure trend (GG, Sat, DC premature deaths :(). After a friend showed me the joys of the fighting games, I grew to love it.
Power Stone 2 - the craziest party game ever. You don't have to even like fighting games in general or know how to play. Just grab a weapon and smack up the opponent, be it an umbrella or dragonslayer sword. Trumps Super Smash in insanity. Stages have never been so persistently interactive. Project Justice - I never thought I'd get to play this game in my life, the fabled sequel to Rival Schools. Very fun character designs, and my innate love of music automatically gravitated me towards Yurika. Last Blade 2 - Very well ported from AC/Neogeo (?). It's a shame that this didn't grow more in popularity with all the swordplay action and repelling. The dpad/stick made me cry, with the terribly difficult time in comparison to the PS2 controller I had with pulling of simple moves such as qcfs or even just trying to not jump. Also, due to realizing that several great RPGs such as Grandia II and Skies of Arcadia were ported from it (or vv?), I respected it more. Finally, DC spawned the funkiest rhythm game ever to grace my PS2 with a port: SPAAAAACE CHANNEL 5~~! |
Dreamcast lover. I still collect and play games for it (Roommania 203 being my latest), but my DC has been failing me lately. In the middle of a game, it fades to black and reset to the command screen. Sad, sad.
It was sad to see it go, especially since the Naomi hardware is still used. |
I think the best VMU minigame by far was the 3 Power Stone minigames. I never got into the Chao games for SA and SA2, though that would've been nice.
|
I love my Dreamcast. I need more games for it. The other day I fixed some controllers I bought from Gamestop and my friends and I had a 4 way Power Stone 2 match. It was beautiful. I still play Ikaruga often, and its the only system I'm eager to buy games for right now.
|
I love it ofcourse, it's IMHO the best console ever right along with MegaDrive.
I would like to play it again but I don't feel much inclined to buy another since my own DC died on me and apparently this is common... I think I'll wait for nullDC emulator and play it on my PC with a 360 pad sometime in the future. |
This system will live on in my heart. Shenmue 1 and Grandia 2 keep the memory going, and who could hate some of the hour long, crazy, arcade shooters/brawlers.
|
The system is too good to hate. Sonic Adventure 2 will always have a place in my heart (ROLLING AROUND AT THE SPEED OF SOUND, GOT PLACES TO GO, GOTTA FOLLOW MY RAINBOOOOOOW, CAN'T STICK AROUND, HAVE TO KEEP MOVING ON!). Probably played that game the most on the system, trying to master the levels and get an A-ranking everywhere (and failing at that).
|
<3.
It's the best free item I've ever gotten. A friend of mine acquired 3 broken ones from somewhere, and since I helped him repair all of them, he gave me one. Plus some controllers, some VMUs, some rumble packs, a keyboard, and an initial library of about 30 copied games. Now I haven't had time to go through many of the DC games, but from those I have, I love it I love it. |

I also got all emblems on Sonic Adventure 1 (no reward AFAIK) and all A-Rank on Sonic Heroes dispite not being a DC game. |
http://www.futura-online.com/e-tiend...controller.jpg
I absolutely love, love, LOVED the DC controller. It was nice and hefty, and just filled up my hands in a rather satisfying manner. Also, the VMU/memory card is one of the best original features that people have desighned into a controller. The cord coming out from the bottom really wasn't a problem since you can just clip it into the back. The only issue I had with it was that it forced you to hold your palms directly parallel from eachother which got kinda tiresome in long play sessions. But I can overlook that. DC in general was a great system. It had a ton of fun games and was a bit ahead of it's time. Vastly underrated. |
|
Grandia II, eh? I loved that game. I haven't played it in a while, but I remember being amazed at how dark the plot became.
Alot of people like to compare it to Skies of Arcadia (the DC's other big RPG) and say that Grandia II wasn't as good. |
yes grandia 2 was an awsome game. One of the best things about the dreamcast version is that the soundtrack came packed in. A very nice addition
|
5 Reasons
First and foremost: Skies of Arcadia (Arguably the best rpg to this date still) 2. Shenmue 3. Grandia II 4. Ecco the Dolphin: Defender of the Future 5. Jet Grind Radio And of course I bought it for Sonic Adventure. Best graphically looking game to open up a console EVER. DC I compare to Xbox, neither accepted that well even though they should have been, and it is a shame that there are so many retarded people out there. So many godly games. |

DC: "Sworn enemies, you shall be defeated! Take that! Sky Dragon Slash"! PS2: "Sworn enemies, take that! Sky Dragon Slash! You shall be defeated". :eyebrow: |

I remember the press was balls-up for Soul Calibur the entire holiday season, a large part due to the graphics (which were redone from the arcade version). I'm kind of in agreement on Sonic Adventure being a great looking launch title (possibly the best looking), since the smoothness of the worlds wasn't possible on the N64 or PS1 and it still looks quite pleasant by today's standards. |
Simple: If you love Japanese gaming, you will love Dreamcast to death... great selection of Fighting, Shooting, Dating Sim and Puzzle games, maybe one of the best ever on any console before the PS2 apocalypsis.
By the way, Sega confirms that Border Down was the NOW REALLY OFFICIAL last Dreamcast game ever... |
Quote:
|
Border Down came out awhile ago. Radilgy, which came out earlier this year, is supposed to be the last official game ever.
|
Ack, sorry guys... it wasnt Border Down, is Under Defeat, sorry... what can i say: G. Rev really rocks my world xP a love the two games.

Either way, it's getting short. The start of this year looked promising, with Radilgy in January and Under Defeat in, I think, February. But there hasn't been anything since and it's september. ;_; |
This reminds me. My friend just recently gave me a copy of Rez and I guess I should start playing it.
I got a DC at launch, and at this backwater town, I was the only one to get it for a LONG TIME. I think people thought we (my brother and me) were crazy. But it didn't matter. The Power Stone demo knocked off my socks for generations to come. Sonic Adventure made my head asplode. Soul Calibur...then CvSNK, MvC2, Project Justice...It was a great run. I absolutely do not regret buying a DC. Too bad I was broke back then and could only afford games that actually got released in the US. So, no GGX and Ikaruga. And the last batch of games were virtually impossible to find.at least for me |
Dreamcast....ehhh...
First - Shenmue! God! I love this game! It's better than Samurai Spirits Amakusa Kourin. DC have many 2D fighters like Last Blade 2, KoF '99 - 02, GGX, Jojo's, MvC2, CvS and many other. Soul Calibur for DC are the best one (ps2 ver are suxxx), DoA2 looks very nice, Jet Set Radio are really funny, Ikaruga and Giga Wing 2 are crazy, Metropolis Street Racer are the best racer game that i ever player... Uhm yeah... I love Dreamcast and hate Playmore, hehe :) I want see Guwange od DC - DC ist a console for arcade games. |
I found the Dreamcast charming. The look, size, the controller (yes, even the controller), VMU and the games were awesome and though it may not have had the power to compare to the PS2, it still produced some nice graphics.
As posted before, it would have been interesting to see if Sega would be able to regain ground had they not killed the Dreamcast. The PS2 didn't start off with a huge BANG so Sega might have been able to capitalise it with a push in advertising and pointing out the "Great" games to "crap" games ratio. Of course even if they did, no one listened to them, probably due to Sega's Houdini-like existance in the PSX/N64 era. "Sega who?" Sega! Why did you pull out of the hardware business? Sure you were losing wads of cash, but to forfeit out of the console race just for the short-term quick buck? Of course, no one can predict the market but Microsoft took a while to create profits with their Xbox (but then there's the Bill Gates factor). I suppose jumping out was the safer thing to do than wait. |
