Epic gaming franchises you've never played
First, this is a kind of common question so if it's been done recently just close it or whatever, k?
For me, Castlevania. Now trhow rocks at me, but I've never played it. It has never appealed to me, to tell you the truth, but you just can't judge a game until you've played it right? Halo. The other day a friend of mine who I know is 100% non gamer came up and told his brothers came up with an XBox and a Halo copy and he totally loved it because of the storyline and action. I was like WTF, is it really that good? The thing is I can't stand FPS, I just don't feel comfortable playing them, even though I know they look amazing and I've been missing a lot of good stories and action. You can throw Hitman, Splinter Cell and Counter Strike there too. So let's share the shame, shall we? sha, sha, sha, sha |
Resident Evil and Metal Gear are two big ones that I've never touched before. You can also throw in Splinter Cell, Quake, and a lot of other stealth/fps games. These are all games that pretty much rely on 3D to work well, and I've always enjoyed the 2D aspect better. These kind of games usually have a hard time pleasing me.
I've noticed a few big RPG series I've never touched either. The Xeno games, Phantasy Star, Harvest Moon, and maybe one or two other big ones. EDIT - Suikoden, that's the other big one I've never tried. |
I guess that i played almost all "epic gaming franchises" if you are talking about game sagas who gets at least more than 10 years, but on "the new classics" i never touched an Onimusha... is that count? also i never played Shadow of the Collossus and i know that the game is really good.. i just dont have a PS2 right now (i sell it about a year ago... financial problems and it was the only console of my list that i know that i can find it very easy and fast), but maybe soon.
For others, i know that in US The King of Fighters saga is a little underground, in Japan and mostly all Latin America is a epic cult classic saga. Also i dont know if this counts but i never touched a Medal of Honor game since MOH Underground on PSX... because i feel the game more "goldeneyeist" in PSX, and not now. That all that i can remember now. |
Most any franchise that has been based around the PC, outside of Simcity and Civilization. So that would cover a wide number of franchises. I've always preferred consoles for the stability factor.
Any FPS franchise outside of Medal of Honor. All suvival horror franchises outside of Resident Evil 1 and Dino Crisis. Any driving sim franchise outside of Gran Turismo 2. All Stealth/Action games outside of MGS1. All MMORPG's or games in franchises that require additional payments on top of the retail price. Mortal Kombat Wario Ware Pikmin Romance of the 3 Kingdoms Elder Scrolls Last Blade Tony Hawk/Any extreme sports franchise That would cover the majority...I've dabbled in a couple recent sports franchises (NFL <insert year here>, MVP Baseball, Madden) and 3D fighter franchises (Virtua Fighter, DoA and Tekken) but nothing beyond a game or two. |
There's a lot of rpg series I've never played but mainly because they never got European releases. Even now more of them are getting ported over (Xenosaga etc for example) I simply don't have the time to play them. Also, my attention span isn't really up to lengthy rpgs any more.
|
Onimusha, Devil May Cry, Civilization, Command & Conquer, Panzer Dragoon, Gran Turismo, Rachet & Clank, Hitman, Medal of Honor, any Tom Clancy game outside of the first Splinter Cell.
There are surely more, but those are the ones that come to mind. |
I've never played a Phantasy Star before, though I'd like to try one. Not that its epic but I've never played a WarioWare game either but I here such great things about them..same goes for Katarami games as well as F-Zero games....I think I tried an F-Zero once but never played for an extended period of time
|
Earthbound is one. I've seen and heard about it's big following, but the game just never interested me. I guess that's partially due to how it wasn't a traditional fantasy based RPG, and back when I started playing RPGs in the 16-bit era, that's all I was interested in.
Dynasty Warriors is another one I've heard great acclaim overall for, but just never got around to trying out even one of the games, though the series itself sounds rather interesting. |
Hmm... this is a tough one. It's like "name every game you have never played." That's quite a few!
However, my main genres are platformers and RPG's, so I'll stick to those. To consider a game series "epic" I would say it needs to have 5 titles or more. So, I would name the Ultima, Wizardry, Suikoden, and Wild Arms games. (Actually, I own Wizardry 8 for PC, Suikoden III, and Wild Arms 1 and 3, but haven't played any of them yet. Eventually, perhaps...) Oh, and does Pokemon count? :p |
Man, there are so many big title franchises i've never played.
Grandia Suikoden Splinter Cell Earthbound Ghost Recon Gran Turismo God of War Dead or Alive Guilty Gear Elder Scrolls Just to name a few. I hope to get around to Grandia and Suikoden one of these days. Otherwise i'm perfectly content having not played any of the others (Although the Elder Scrolls games look sorta fun). |
Nearly all the big-name RPGs have passed me by for lack of time and dedication. Other notable franchises include the Ratchet and Jak series which I never really grew fond of (from demos). Guilty Gear cos of lack of competition, although it looks damn cool. GT since I found it too boring (along with other race sims). Medal of Honor... well I need to start this one eh?
Once I start with a series though, I can go nuts with tracking down all the games to play them. Since I started Mega Man Zero last year, I've been looking to fill in the gaps from the original and X series; I even ventured into BN territory and actually found it quite satisfying! |
The only game that comes to my head at the moment is Myst because lately I have been wanting to play those types of games and I haven't got around to it.
Fatal Frame although not a huge epic of a series I still haven't really played it and again i really want to because I want a game or something to freak me out. Hopefully whenever I get around to playing it I will have the satisfactory of having a big scare or two. |
Final Fantasy
Metal Gear Resident Evil (with the exception of RE4) Splinter Cell, and really most recent console FPS games Silent Hill Devil May Cry etc Just never had any interest, really. There's Earthbound, too: I played Earthbound and actually outright stopped playing because the battle system was too goddamn annoying. I liked the style of the game, though. |
Well, I think we first need to compile an Official List of "epic" franchises, just so we're all on the same page.
I mean, personally I wouldn't consider 'Halo' an "epic" or "legendary" franchise. There are only two games in the series so far, and they're really not all that special except for the fact that they're halfway decent FPS games that happen to be on a console (something of a rarity, it seems). Compared to some of the better PC FPS's...meh. As for me, I would list Phantasy Star and Shining Force as two noteworthy legendary franchises I've never touched (unless you count Phantasy Star Online...which I don't). It's not so much that I had no interest (in fact, I used to be really into RPGs. I still am, to an extent, but my lack of available free time has severly limited my RPG playing in recent years), but I didn't have a Sega Genesis when those franchises were in their heyday, and by the time I got one I just had too many other things to focus on. I've never played any of the Splinter Cell or Rainbow Six type games...that type of gameplay never appealed to me. I've never played any of the GTA games for more than a few minutes...those never appealed to me either. And, even though they're very popular and I've heard lots of great things about them, I've never played any of the Xenogears/Xenosaga games. No real reason why since, as I said, I like RPGs. |
Say what you want about Halo, most would consider it pretty epic.
Personally, I've only played a few minutes of Earthbound. I couldn't really get into it, but I've been meaning to try it out again eventually, so that won't be unplayed for too long. Despite it's major critical acclaim, I've never played a Civilization game. I'm really tempted to pick up Civ 4 when it gets cheap though. To be honest, I've played most of the major franchises though, so I can't think of much else. |
Well, "epic", as Highlander pointed out, has to be defined. But until then I can say with utmost confidence that Final Fantasy has to qualify - a franchise doesn't get any more epic than that, and I've never touched any part of the series.
Zorro |
Although I've played other RTS games, Dungeon Keeper and Dark Reign 1 & 2, for example, I never played any of the Command & Conquer games.
Also, Sonic. Kept seeing friends with a Sega or display models at Toys R Us, and every time I tried playing it I set it down within 5 minutes because I couldn't understand what the hell the point was. Um...I guess Mechwarrior would count also. Sim-type games never thrilled me, so even though the thought of tearing through enemy infantry with a couple of arm-mounted miniguns is exciting, the gameplay always looked slow and tedious to me. |
From the OST, I believe that Shadow of the Colossus automatically qualifies as "epic" and I have never played that yet or have had the desire to.
I haven't touched the Suikoden series except for a literal five minutes of Suikoden IV, in which I was dissatisfied from skipping an introductory tutorial on ships or something. Metal Gear Solid and any of it's spawn and incarnations have never been my thing. The closest was my failed attempt to survive in a demo version of the original Metal Gear Solid. That genre never really fascinated or interested me. The Metroid series I guess falls under the same category. I've played the original metroid for a couple of minutes and then realized how inept I am at most games requiring shooting of some kind (even though it was a platformer). Finally, Resident Evil scares the crap out of me, and falls into the shooting subtype once again. Played the first few minutes of 2 and 4, and never wanted to play again. |
I know "epic" wasn't the best choice for an adjective, but I couldn't find a better one, "famous" sounded too general, but I believe most of the replies have got it right.
I'm talking about the games that make you say: "Dude how come you haven't played _______ do you live under a rock or what?" |
I haven't played Splinter Cell, Suikoden, Deus Ex, Morrowind, Lufia, Lunar, Half-Life, Shin Megami, Sims, Ghost Recon, Call of Duty, Baiten Kaitos, Age of Empires, Boktai, BloodRayne, Civilization, Colony Wars, Pikmin, Hitman, Dark Cloud, Dino Crisis, Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest, Duke Nukem, Front Mission, Fire Emblem, Guitar Hero, .hack, King's Quest, Medal of Honor, Myst (shit sucks hardcore), Onimusha, Spy Hunter, Ultima, Zone of Enders or any of the Tales of ____ games.
So yeah. Alot. Mostly due to poor reviews or what I saw of them really didn't take hold of my interest for very long. I'm fussy. |
BloodRayne's an epic/popular/anything franchise? :tpg: I have the first on Xbox, reminds me of something D3 Publisher would spew out.
I haven't played any of the TOM CLANCY PRESENTS TOM CLANCY'S TOM CLANCY games. Well I mean, five minutes with an in-store demo of Splinter Cell doesn't really count. I was long tired of stealth games before a million of these popped up. There seems to be a new Tom Clancy game every few weeks now! |
I would think Metroid is the most epic franchise I've never played. At least it's the only relevant franchise I’m really keen to try, soon as.
I may hunt for the Gamecube titles - if I remember. |
I could almost say all of them. The most popular games are always the ones I find least appealing.
I'm probably wrong, but I feel I can tell how those games start, climax and finish just by the box art. |
Does playing a 2 minute demo of RE2 on PC count? No? Then I've official never touched a full version of ANY Resident Evil game before, which is why I'm hesitant on getting RE4, despite all the rave reviews.
|
Quite a few..
Zone of Eaters, Devil May Cry, Pikman, Tales, Warcraft, Splinter Cell. There are many, many more, but I don't know of some of them are "epic." |
There are a number of game franchises that I haven't touched (Halo, Splinter Cell, Tony Hawk, any sports game, etc) but that's mostly due to lack of time and/or appropriate game console to play them. I would consider the Dragon Quest games to fall under the category of being truly "epic" and I have never played any of them other than a half hour or so of the first NES game. Killing slimes...yay.
|
I'm sure there's plenty of series I haven't got to yet, but from the series mentioned in this thread so far, the only ones I haven't played a game from are:
Suikoden ~ I really intend to play some real soon. Fire Emblem ~ It's got "FIRE" in it, but I've never played a game. :/ This worries me Panzer Dragoon ~ I don't even know what it's about, but it's got awesome music Ratchet & Clank ~ My friends mentioend how awesome the games are, but I've never got around to it. Jak & Daxter ~ In the same boat/showbox/bag/penthouse. ^^ Phantasy Star ~ Just doesn't seem like my type of game. Elder Scrolls ~ Again, I've been meaning to, but it just hasn't happened. Fatal Frame ~ The covers for the games just keep standing out when I look at PS2 games in the store. It's calling out to me, but I ignore it. I need to get sucked in at some point. Maybe I'm scared. :p Shadow of the Colossus ~ Just got it a few weeks ago, and I'll play it soon. God of War ~ Just got it a few weeks ago, and I'll play it soon. Pikmin ~ My GameCube games collection is steadily growing now, but I haven't played a game from this series yet. Guilty Gear ~ Fucking awesome music from the many, many soundtracks I've heard; but I've nver played a game. |
I have never touched the Suikoden series, although, interestingly I have many of the soundtracks... weird eh?
Xenosaga - Never got into it, mainly because I had grown away from Video Games. Phantasy Star - Great franchise, but never touched it. |
Off the top of my head, and here comes the irony.
I'VE NEVER PLAYED ACE COMBAT. |
The fuck. >=(
Go play them all. Now. Finish off with Ace Combat Advance for a tragic ending! |

Oh yeah, I LOVE Ace Combat.... but I have NEVER played it either. I have wanted to, but have never received the chance to do so.
Maybe when a PS3 version comes out, I will then. Graphics are going to be AMAZING then! |
Game series I haven't touched yet include Suikoden, Xeno, DDS, & Lunar - although I have most of these I just haven't had the time to play them yet. Obviously I'm an rpg freak :)
I haven't touched any other sort of gaming franchise as they don't interest me at all - unless you count Crash, Spyro & Ratchet, I really enjoyed them for light relief! |
Never played the Suikoden series, nor the Ace Combat games, or Myst.
Suikoden is kinda rare where I live, and I'm not a fan of importing games, I'll get it one day though. Ace Combat has never really appealed to me, and Myst looks very boring, and the reviews that I read for it didn't do it any favours. |

That said, uhh....uhhh....I haven't played any....hmm. Oh, yes. I haven't played...Fuck. You know, the first thing that comes to mind is that I haven't played either of the Marathon games by Bungie. That's about all I can come up with. Nothing mentioned in this thread otherwise has really went untouched by me in some form or another. |

Gotta touch 'em all? |
Final Fantasy. Yes, believe it or not, I have yet to play any Final Fantasy games nor am I about to. I love the series music and follow it closely, but I refuse to play any of the games thanks to it's rather retarded fan base.
Plus, I like to slip that I've never played a FF game into RPG discussions sometimes, it always gets nerds going. |
You know....now that I think about it, I've never actually played a Final Fantasy game either. I mean...I've SEEN friends play several large chunks of the games from FF6 on up as well as having seen the endings to 7 , 9, and 10. But I can't remember actually having played one outside of a tiny bit of 6 (which I'm not really sure if I actually played or not since its been so incredibly long...)
Huh. |

Every now and then Capcom will release a platformer spin-off. They made six of them on NES, but all of them were ignored and are often spat on. I believe they kept making the failure spin-off games for SNES and PlayStation, even gathering them up and trying to trick people into buying collections of them on PS2 and GC. Of course the only reason anyone bought those collections was for the true Megaman games like Power Battle and Battle and Chase. |
Compared to many people, I don't have a very diverse video game collection. I could list many epic series' that I haven't even touched but I'll just say a few:
Zelda Resident Evil Ace Combat Phantasy Star Metroid There are many games I've been looking up and I'm hoping I'll be able to play them soon... Oh, and I sort of lied, I've played The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for a short time, and I didn't think it was that great. But then again, I was a naive kid back then... ...*cough* |
Quote:
Silent Hill (again, I'm not sure if it's epic or not) Resident Evil (maybe 2 minutes of the first one, but that was it) Xenogears/Xenosaga (maybe the first 3 minutes of xenogears) Any MMO game. Valkryie Profile (Don't shoot me!) |
Let's see where to begin...
Mortal Kombat (ok I've played a bit but it just seems like an excuse to get kids saying "YAY! BLOOD!":edgartpg:) Final Fantasy (wasted my time on pokemon instead, although I have played demos and the online although I consider that to be a totally different game) Grandia Suikoden Earthbound Ghost Recon God of War Dead or Alive (just can't take it seriously with all the fanservice... is this a fighting game series or a softcore porno for lonely horny gamers? >.>) Guilty Gear Elder Scrolls Metroid (played the original for about half an hour and thought you'd have to be really bored to play through all this >.>) Zone of Eaters Pikman Warcraft (done the whole mmorpg thing to death already can't see much being better on this) Suikoden Deus Ex Sims (if you can call that epic "omg! I'm playing a game watching another guy playing a game!" :eyebrow: ) Call of Duty Age of Empires Hitman Dragon Warrior/Dragon Quest Fire Emblem Resident evil .hack Onimusha Spy Hunter Ultima |
The biggest I haven't touched at all was Mega Man, nothing appeals to me at all about that series.
I really never got into devil may cry either, just not my cup of tea, but maybe I'll give them a try later on. |
