Signature Limit Upped

I know you guys have been asking for this awhile now. I have finally edited the signature rules on the signature editing page to match that listed on chocosig hosting. Yes, that means your sig can be up to 75 kb.

Just try to keep it as low as you can, alright? =)

Freelance Sep 17, 2006 11:59 AM

I actually haven't been asking for this, but I like it all the same. It's annoying when I want to add ONE line of text, but can't 'cause it's over the limit :D

Thanks,

Little Shithead Sep 17, 2006 12:02 PM

can I get 100kb up in this place

Bigblah Sep 17, 2006 12:04 PM

If by "kb" you mean "kickbans", yes

Little Shithead Sep 17, 2006 12:07 PM

/r/ing 100kb on Kirche-chan in #gfchat, thanks.

packrat Sep 17, 2006 12:27 PM

I blow the celebratory kazoo to signal the beginning of a new era.

Thanks guys

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Sep 17, 2006 12:52 PM

This is actually just a ploy to get Sass to stop annoying you guys with sig reports so much, right?

Seriously though? Thanks a lot. <3333 PNG time like a motherfucking what.

::three hundred 87kb signature pics appear::

I guess this is a fine thing for the people who absolutely MUST get to use tri-linear vectorized sharfon-theloisen filtering in their .pngs.

Keep in mind the limit is 75kb now and Miles is asking nicely to not to go over it (or to try to make them 70kb+ in the first place)

And just because the limit is changed you shouldn't go and re-edit your current sig to be bigger. The option is there and matches the chocosig setup that bobo never fixed (this raise would probably never happen if he fixed it to 50kb), but only use it if you really really need to so we can save a little bit on bandwidth.

FatsDomino Sep 17, 2006 07:46 PM

Progress! One Sass sig report at a time. =)

That, or just get off your own lazy ass and buy webhosting so you can use your own bandwidth.

That's what every smart person does.

Infernal Monkey Sep 17, 2006 07:56 PM

Now I can fit two of my favorite cool dragon dragon rock the dragon Dragonball Z GIF's from Geocities DBZ HQ Ultra GokuCarrotFace Zone SSJ800 in my sig. :dopey_love:

Scarletdeath Sep 17, 2006 08:00 PM

This is awesome. I'll kill the intarweb with mad FX on sigs.

Naw, the reason they have it at this filesize is not for hosting reasons. Both Imageshack and Imagesocket go up to a megabyte so there's free hosting right there. The reason it's like this is that they appeal to the lowest common denomonater which is people on 56k who actually give a fuck (and they usually don't, they're 56k) and those who don't enjoy loading images period for whatever reason.

The only reason it got raised at all was because of bobo's mistake to up it to 75kb and continuous sig reports from you-know-who.

Personally, I think we should just give people options on how high they want the total sig filesize to be and have it show a small picture in someone's sig saying it's been blocked by this option if it goes over the setting and call it a day. Then people can do whatever they want and noone can complain.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Sep 17, 2006 08:06 PM

Sass will complain.

Scarletdeath Sep 17, 2006 08:27 PM

@ Acer: I heard Imageshack don't allow GFF to hotlink sigs anymore

FatsDomino Sep 17, 2006 08:34 PM

Oh well fuck them. Use Imagesocket then. At least it isn't riddled with ads. And they let you host over a megabyte unlike Imageshack.

Inhert Sep 17, 2006 08:35 PM

well if you look at my sig thread (click on my sig) there's about half of the sig there host on imageshack and I can still see them....(or am I the only one to see them? XD)

but yeah use imagesocket it's seem it's way better ^^

Scarletdeath Sep 17, 2006 08:38 PM

I found another image hosting site: http://tinypic.com/

Not sure if it's any good though..

map car man words telling me to do things Sep 18, 2006 02:06 AM

The sig size limit is there so that I (and of course many others, but that's irrelevant lol) don't have to sit here waiting for twenty 100kb signature pictures to load, we've gone through this so many times.

Not everyone wants to see the funny animated signature picture you put up or the smooth filtering, some people just want to read posts.

I have broadband like many others, but that doesn't mean everything loads up instantly. I (along with many others) do care about aesthetics enough to browse with signatures on, though, so a light set is not the solution.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Sep 18, 2006 02:55 AM

I'm still in favour of increasing the filesize but lowering the maximum dimensions. 300 pixels is way too tall.

FatsDomino Sep 18, 2006 04:23 AM

The sig dimensions are fine. I'm pretty sure you're in the minority, Shin.

Really, what would be nice is if we had personal sig filesize limits. The default for everyone initially would be 75kb. Then if you wanted it lowered or raised you could as you see fit. It would only allow images below a filesize that you set be displayed. If it goes over then it displays a small image in the sigpic's place that says "Picture blocked by personal sig filesize limit."

How could we do this? Well obviously checking everytime a thread loads would be ridiculous. You'd crash the server for sure. What you could do is have it keep a stat for the total filesize of your sig whenever you press apply when you edit your sig. It'll calculate the loaded images then and there and keep the total filesize in a database. It would do this for everyone and basically that way it would automatically filter people's sigpics for you without taxing the server.

People who want to use and see big sigpics can do that and people who don't want to see them can set limits so they don't. Happy world for everyone, yes?

I'm in favor of lowering both the visual and memory size of sigs. :(

(I can't stand those 1" 3mb anigifs I see on other forums.)

nazpyro Sep 18, 2006 11:16 AM

Sweet. Now I can further sig-abuse my now almost-7-month-long request. Flags ftw.

FatsDomino Sep 18, 2006 11:36 AM

naz you've got too many images in your sig <3

nazpyro Sep 18, 2006 11:39 AM

¬_¬()

That needs to be upped too. To at least 7 or something. :p

Alright, sig reducing now.

FatsDomino Sep 18, 2006 12:10 PM

lol I was just kidding around. While it's true according to the rules I don't really give a shit. Surely since I've pointed it out someone else here in metropolis does though. Sound the alarm! Pictures that size are pretty harmless anyway.

packrat Sep 18, 2006 01:04 PM

I have a question about the number of images in the signature.
Do the rules mean that there can only be 2 different images in a signature? If so, does this imply that someone can have more than two iterations of the same image in their signature? Or is it only 2 images, regardless?

FatsDomino Sep 18, 2006 01:18 PM

The specific rule states only 2 images max in a sig. That can include emoticons if we're nazi anal butt pirates but we usually don't count emoticons unless you've got like 5 of them and then I'm tempted to mod abuse your ava/sig.

My thoughts are as long as your images match the alotted 300x550 pixels while staying under the filesize limit then you should be okay. That's me though and I'm real lenient about sigs.

Double Post:
Oh god what have I done? =O

3375 images of the same image http://content.imagesocket.com/images/rgb03a7f.gif in my sig. This is a disaster!

nazpyro Sep 18, 2006 01:50 PM

If you stare into it the way you do with those Magic Eye images (stereoscopically?), it's like a bunch of white bars scrolling left. Hypnotic, but a bit boring. Maybe if it had the illusion of ridiculous bouncing. That'd be godly. And my eyes would bleed.

Every day I hate you more and more...

Summonmaster Sep 18, 2006 06:26 PM

Aaw, I was hoping there would be a horizontal uppage from 550px.
Oh well, any increase is good, but I don't see my sigs ever aspiring to reach an upper bound of 75kb (design illiterate).

I poked it and it made a sad sound Sep 21, 2006 11:39 PM

Sorry to drag this up, but um. I would like to apologize for reporting sigs over 50kb since this was posted. No one sent me a memo, and nor should they have! But I am just saying, you know. Sorry.

Also, you guys know those reports get annoying. I am guessing that aided in the decision? ^_^

I won't complain. I will say that you've taken away a lot of my fun when the forums are dead. Cry.

Kolba Sep 22, 2006 01:35 PM

I wish sig dimensions could be decided on a per user basis.

300 pixels tall is fine for decent signatures which have a lot of content in them; they'd look too noisy if they were squashed. But look at this http://www.gamingforce.com/forums/me...nfo&userid=370

It's just 300 pixels of very dark lighting.

Maico Sep 23, 2006 11:44 PM

What next, unlimited avatar file sizes? I'm sure you've been to other forums where people think it's cool to have a megabyte or larger avatar of some stupid-ass movie scene or something like that. I don't really care so much being on a high-speed connection at the moment, but what about the dial-uppers?

The 100kb limit doesn't bother me as much as how many signatures contain pictures that are really tall though. Most of the members with such a picture usually post one-line sentences to balance their post frame, but when they start typing longer posts it makes the whole look of things look... off, for lack of a better word.

Kolba Sep 23, 2006 11:51 PM

'Shit' is a better word.

I suppose that could be an extra option added to Personal Sig Limits if it's ever made.

Yeah, to begin with he's going 3 pixels over the width dimensions. Plus, it is a shitty sig. I'm going to get him a new matching Phoenix Wright ava/sig. =)

I'm pretty sure AOL Dial-Up is more expensive then broadband.

Sometime during the summer they upped the limit. Unfortunately, I'm too lazy to host the images on my own webspace. :p
