Best Pokemon Game
I'm interested in trying out the games, since they seem kind of fun, but I don't know which of the thousand games to get. For those who know, what game(s) (up to 2) should I invest in?
Edit: Also, if I were to get one of the Gameboy ones (Blue, Red, etc), will they be able to play on either my GBA or DS? |
I would say simply get the GBA ones. Maybe Emerald/Sapphire/Ruby and Leaf Green/Fire Red (one of each, cause they are the same game just with different Pokemon). There are some pokemon that can only be gotten through Colosseum, but that game is so slow that you will be bored to tears. I've actually beaten it, but it takes a while. There is that puzzle one that I hear about...so if you like puzzles, maybe you could give that one a go.
Gold/Silver/Crystal are easily the best ones, but they're pretty dated by today's standards, so I would go with the GBA ones. It's up to you though. And if anything, you could always go to some review site to see if your interest spikes. Or something. For your edit: You can play the GB/GBC ones only on your GBA, not the DS. |
I trashed my N64 a couple years back since I didn't have a lot of games on it, but my cousin has the Colosseum. One last question: if my cousin has GB Red and Blue, would I be able to battle from the GBA carts?
Thanks! :) |
No. I don't believe you can transfer from the GB to the GBA (even battles). I was trying to trade my Gold pokemon to my Sapphire, but its not possible. =(
I do have to say that some of the Pokemon Colosseum music is pretty good though. If your cousin has it, you should check it out. |
YELLOW!
EDIT: I like to be able to get the 3 starting Pokemon without driving 3 hours to the nearest kid with a Bulbasaur. |
Like SuperDK stated, Gold and Silver are probably the best, but I'd probably either probably pick up Emerald or one of the Fire Red/Leaf Green games. Also, Nintendo is slowly starting to give information on Diamond/Pearl for the DS, and it has been said that you'll be able to transfer Pokemon from Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald/FR/LG to the new games, something you won't be able to do with the older generations.

I was disappointed at how the GBA versions had pretty much the same graphics as the GBC versions, except maybe the sprites had more color.
Objectively I'd have to say Gold/Silver were the most fun to play. |
Silver Version has always been a stable favourite of mine, easily justified by the amount of challenge and variety that the game proposes to the player.
I don't even mind the supposedly outdated graphics - and, anyway, the mechanics are solid enough to warrant sufficing entertainment. So, for my personal advice, go for Gold/Silver. Sapphire is equally fun, although it's considerably shorter and not so ample "geographically". |
Graphics don't matter for me, addiction does: if the game can hold interest for a long time, that's a winner for me.
|
Personally, I like the original Blue/Red versions the most. I've always hated how they split special into special defense and special attack in the later versions. That ruined about 90% of my favorite pokemon, making them virtually unusable.
|
The future pokemon games (upcoming for DS are Pokemon Pearl and Diamond) are reported to be compatible with the RSE generation of games. I would recommend Leaf Green and Fire Red as well if you aren’t sure about the RSE series. Leaf Green and Fire Red are based on the old RBY versions for GB and GBC. LG and FR I think are compatible with the future generation of pokemon games too.
|
Like SuperDK mentioned, the GBA games are the way to go. Don't bother getting Sapphire or Ruby, get Emerald. LeafGreen/FireRed are also excellent choices.
|
FR and LG have enhanced graphics and added sidequests, as well as most of the "classic" Pokemons familiar to people who've seen the anime at least once... Emerald has a lot of new Pokemons that are hard to recognize. So give LG/FR a try, if you like it, get Emerald.
|
Silver/Gold are easily my favorite out of the series. (I've not played either in so long now.) They added so many new and fun things to the game in those versions, features which, as I have seen, remain unsurpassed in ingenuity in latter versions of the game. (Granted, newer games do have neat features; they don't have much on Gold, especially Silver.)

Anyways, personally, I didn't like Gold/Silver as much, as good as they were. I recommend Fire Red or Leaf Green - it's the best of the both worlds - classic world, but new gameplay mechanics (and better graphics). |
I really enjoyed playing Pokemon Trading Card on GBC, diferent style playing pokemon, but for the regular role game I go with pokemon Fire red.
|
No love for Pokemon Snap? :(
|
I love Pokemon Snap!
If you want to get into Pokemon don't even bother with the old GB ones since they aren't compatable with anything and they have remakes that are. Fire Red / Leaf Green are awesome. Get one of those, and one of Sapphire / Ruby (or Emerald, but I don't know anything about that) for the ultimate Pokemon games. Pokemon Silver is awesome too, but that's useless now. I'd probably buy a remake of that... Stay far away from Pokemon Colloseum too, the worst game of all time. Pokemon Stadium 1 & especially 2 are much better, but are also useless now. I wish we got a real stadium game on GC :thumbsdown; |
Pokemon Snap was pretty lame, in hindsight. In fact I'm unsure why I even bothered to play it.
They need to only make Pokemon RPGs. All that shit on the side is meh. |
C'mon, you can't say that Pokémon Puzzle League sucked.
But I have to say that the GSC generation was the best. The game had length, depth, and was just fun. I still play my Gold version every now and then. But, after that, a lot of the Pokémon concepts and designs were just plain stupid. =/ |

Don't get me wrong: it was a challenging game at some times; however, both its shortness--in my opinion--and bad concept (why do I need to take pictures of pokemon while riding in a pre-defined path: the game could have been ten times more interesting if it were done in more of an adventure style) made the experience somewhat subpar. |
Defnitely get Gold/Silver. Mainly because you can jouney to both Kanto and Johto, none of the other versions do this. For the GBA system definitely pick up Emerald.
By the way, I loved the old music they used from the Red/Blue series, and listeing to how the music changed as the games progressed. I also loved the remixes they pulled off for the Stadium games. |
No, purchase Pokemon Emerald. It's the smartest choice out there. Here's why.
A: The game's mechanics have been better fine-tuned. The programmers learned from a few problems in Gold/Silver and even Ruby/Sapphire. The storage system is superior and the battles/graphics are at their best. B: There's a premium of things to do. Emerald features the usual collecting and battling, but also offers a "theme park" as a reward for reaching the end of your quest. In this park, you'll face a TON of new challenges and earn some excellent rewards. You can't find the park in any other Pokemon game. C: There's going to be forward compatibility between Emerald and Diamond/Pearl. Unlike the hard work you may put into Gold/Silver, you'll eventually be able to bring your Emerald pokemon into the DS game. I doubt you'll be able to read both the DS and GBA cartridges simultaneously on one machine, but at least the transfer option will exist. D: Most Pokemon fans have the most current game. If you should happen to find one who wants to battle head-to-head, it does neither of you any good when your Gold/Silver game is incompatible with his/her Ruby or Sapphire cart. To at least allow the possibility of battling anyone, keep yourself current. Those are 4 good reasons to get Emerald above any other version. If there's a topic I know well, it's Pokemon. (Ask Colonel Skills or Ritley) So please trust my advice, here. |
Huh, the newer GBA games are way better than the older games. I love the new Pokémon Box and the RUNNING SHOES. I love how you don't have to save every single damn time you changed boxes in the older games. They're also more fun.
Anyway, Puzzle League and Puzzle Challenge are both awesome games as well. Don't let the Pokémon theme fool you. Underneath all that are great puzzle games. Stay away from the Stadium games unless you actually have people with the GB/A games to battle with. They're useless otherwise. Stadium 2 does have some cool mini-games though, and one of them even starred adorable FURRET!!. I was disappointed that Coloseium(sp?) didn't have any mini-games. Another great game is Pokémon Pinball Ruby/Sapphire. |
The GBA games aren't better, but they are the smartest choice to buy now. The GBA games are good, but they hold nothing on the old ones.
|
Best Pokemon games, huh? Well, I gotta go with Yellow.
Why? It's the closest one to the actual anime that I've played. Red and Blue are good too. As far as the N64 goes, I like Stadium 1 (US) and Puzzle League. I also own Trading Card, Pinball, Gold and Silver, but they aren't as good as the other ones I've mentioned. |

This is how they're able to make the rumble pack, expansion packs (like Daigasso! Band Bros.,) and unlockables for series that had a game on the GBA (take Kirby Canvas Curse unlocking a character if you had Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland in, or, I think, Advance Wars DS with either Advance Wars 1/2 in.) Basically, it would be retarded for Nintendo to not to include single-unit trading between the two. I don't know the specs on the GBA wireless adapter so I don't know if it would be compatable with the 802.11b adapter of the DS. Quote:
was out before the anime and Yellow is pretty much outdated and the GBA ones are a lot better. Also typing like this is really fucking retarded and is really unnecessary, so I'm kindly asking you to stop. |
I was merely making a decison between older and newer versions. Besides, I'm guessing you're referring to the actual game itself and not emulation. There are ways to bypass the trade system between the older and newer games through emulation, but if you actually own the cartridge, stick with Emerald.
|
Even if you get a DS or GBA version, it's worth it to pick up that used copy of Gold or Silver. It's like what? $5 bucks?
Gold/Silver/Crystal all improved on the originals, adding in lots of useful features, more worthful Pokemon, and two continents. G/S/C were my personal favorites, and you can get them dirt cheap now, so why not? |
In regards to the G/S/C series, I think emulation is prefered for these titles now. What do you think?
|
I don't enjoy playing Pokemon on my PC
I thought it was confirmed or at least hinted at somewhere that the upcoming DS Pokemon games would be compatable with all the GBA Pokemon, i'm not sure though. This would let them include only all new Pokemon in the DS versions so you can grab the old ones from the GBA ones. I'd love some info on the DS versions soon... |

Gold and Silver. Yes Blue and Red were out before the anime. I bought Red and Blue, then Yellow a couple of weeks after it came out. Gold and Silver were the last ones I bought for GBC and Stadium was the last one I bought for N64. After that I didn't buy anymore Pokemon games so maybe my opinion is a bit biased when I said Yellow. |
Dear SuperSonic,
Stop shitting up your posts like that, or I'll edit all of them. Love, Infernal As for Pokemon, I've never been able to get into the various RPG ones on Game Boy/Color/Rape/Advance. Not my thing. Pokemon Channel however, wow, probably the best game ever made. Snap was fairly entertaining, too. You could peg apples at the Pokemon. And from what I played of the demo, Pokemon Trozei is a lot of fun. Like a faster paced Zoo Keeper, and with music that isn't just sound recorded as someone went to the toilet looped over and over with a generic beat. So basically I like all the Pokemon games that aren't Pokemon games. Except Dash. |
The only pure Pokémon games I played were Red, Blue, and Yellow. My will to catch 'em all ended there. Probably had I the motivation to pick up the next one in the series, there would be a much higher chance that I would have probably kept up with the series to date. Instead, growing up took its toll. Now it's all about rhythm games, Disney characters, drawing first blood, and rolling up everything ever.

My suggestions are Pokémon Silver and Pokémon Puzzle Challenge. Both of these are wonderful games, though the latter can be quite difficult.
|
Pokemon Silver was the best Pokemon game, followed closely by LeafGreen, the remake of the original Blue Version (green in Japan). The reason why the latter isn't the best, IMO, is because it lacked the day/night cycle of Silver which really could've made the remake far better.
If a remake of Gold/Silver ever comes out, or if the new one is a revised version of these (doubt it), then that'd be the top dog. |
I think we can expect a re-make. Since LeafGreen and FireRed did so well, why not make a remake? I'm sure Nintendo will make a bundle in the process.
Also, all we know about the upcoming Pokemon games is that it's Wi-Fi enabled, and you're able to connect to all the GBA Pokemon games.. |
I like G/S the most... Nothing is better than traveling to two regions and earning 16 badges in total... Despite how easy it might've gotten then.
I still like Emerald and such because of the Battle Frontier. Nothing like the Battle Dome... Love that place. And FR/LG is pretty good too... I lost my copy, so I have to decide how i'm going to get a new one. |
Quote:
I think that would be cool. I'd definitely check that out if it ever happened. |
Hmm the only one I enjoyed was Pokemon Red/Blue/Green. Though its only because it was the first pokemon game I played that felt like a unique game. pokemon Gold provided a new take on the adventure but it was more of the same in the end.
Oh well perhaps the DS version will change things up. Quote:

I owed Pokemon Red, my brothers owned the rest...I liked the Gold/Silver combo mostly because of the addition of Pokemon breeding...being a mathematical type person, I was one to record the stats and determine egg moves and predict the output of the new baby pokemon....
ahhh, yes...those were the days....(yesterday) |
I liked Yellow version the best since there is a Pikachu that follows you! Gold and Silver are my second choices.
|
While Crash is probably right, I'd have to say that my personal favorite generation was Gold/Silver. It just had my favorite set of Pokemon, several of which cannot be obtained in Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald or Fire Red/Leaf Green. Containing both Johto and Kanto was a plus, as well. I believe it was also the only game that keeps track of whether it's day or night, which made things interesting.
|
I've recently started playing Fire Red/Leaf Green and it feels like a excellent remake. But it was better if they scrapped both and gave us a Pokemon Yellow remake instead, because it kinda combines Red/Blue but I guess they just had to give us both because of all the trading/connectivity with both :p
A remake of Gold/Silver? Sure, but I doubt it will be coming. As far as I've read in a FAQ, Fire Red/Leaf Green holds a few secret regions that house Pokemon of Gold and Silver so it seems they crammed them in there just to make us happy. The regions even have remade music of Gold/Silver. It amazes me how many critters they have made up to put in the games... just too many. For me, after Gold and Silver I thought it was enough but i'm the kinda guy that hates leaving the "old kind" of Pokemon behind and embrace the new ones. |
Sapphire was rather fun to play. I've thought of getting Emerald, but lately I've lost interest.
Mostly now I'm just waiting until Diamond/Pearl arrives. |
I'd stick with Red version, though I think that's really nostalgia speaking.
Gold and Crystal were great games, but I never upgraded to GBA, so I dont know about Ruby/Leaf/etc. I might get them now that I have a DS... |
