Languages you want study

Hi, since there is lot of people in GFF, I want to know the languages you want study and what do you do to achieve that.

Let's start from me... currently I'm studying japanese in a Japanese Language Culture Centre (Shokyu 2)... currently I pend my exam date because I'm chickened out by the amount of vocabulary I must memorize. The next one is German, studied it two years ago, but currently I dont continue it, maybe in future I will take course to master it.

other languages I want to study are French, Hebrew, Turkish, and Chinese Mandarin. I wonder how to study hebrew language... it's just too damn hard, yet very2 interesting.

allright that's from me, what's yours?

Son of Wiseness Mar 7, 2006 06:55 AM

I'm part Mexican, so I'd like to study Spanish.

DukeBox Mar 7, 2006 07:01 AM

I studied Italian in highschool and I really enjoyed it (the language, the culture, and OMG the FOOD ^o^ ) So I would definitely like to further my Italian studies ^___^

Aside from that, I would love to learn Japanese (same reasons, love the language, the culture, and the food ^^; - a trend is emerging, no? :p .... Also, I would like to be able to read manga in Japanese... it's cheaper to buy that way too ;) )

Menzoberranzan Mar 7, 2006 07:02 AM

I think Latin would be cool to learn lol.

Yeah, actually Latin would be a good language to learn too ^___^ It's be especially useful for Medicine, where alot of terminology is derived directly from Latin ;) . It's also just interesting knowing the origins of alot of words in everyday speech too

xSummonerYUnax Mar 7, 2006 07:13 AM

I also want to learn Latin. I actually tried learning it on my own but it got too confusing when I got to the declensions. Maybe I'll find a course in college or someone who can teach me one day.

The Wise Vivi Mar 7, 2006 08:47 AM

I want to learn Chinese Mandarin and Korean. I am planning to get a tutor for Mandarin in the next while.

xuemin Mar 7, 2006 08:51 AM

i'm currently learning japanese along with my degree at university, and next year i hope to continue it and take another language as well, either german or mandarin which i've learnt before but is kinda back to basic levels since i don't have a single chance of practising it and back then german was compulsory so i considered it a chore. also want to learn korean at some point and cantonese written chinese (i can already speak) since at my chinese school we get taught the formal version and it annoys me when i can't read what other cantonese kids are typing because i don't know the characters.

latin isn't just useful for medicine, it makes learning any language that is latin based a lot easier, and can help you deduce the meanings of words you've never seen before because you know the latin root. it's also fun to be able to see a word and guess it's original latin form and conjugate it, or that's just me ^^;; (latin was compulsory at my school for 3 years)

Akumu Mar 7, 2006 08:57 AM

I would like to learn all the romantic languages (Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese, and Romanian) - these languages are easy to learn and sound delicious.

Arkhangelsk Mar 7, 2006 10:15 AM

I wanted to learn Latin back in high school, since our school used to offer it, but lacking a teacher they cancelled the program.

At the moment I really want to learn Norwegian and Japanese...Norwegian looks more feasable right now, simply because it's closer to English than Japanese is. It's mostly because my favorite forms of entertainment involve those languages; I listen to quite a bit of my music in Norwegian, and a lot of the manga series I love are not licensed and probably never will be. Not to mention there's a lot of novel series that are in Japan that have a snowball's chance in hell of getting translated and brought over, and I'd like to read them.

Lee-chan Mar 7, 2006 10:29 AM

So far, I've studied Spanish, Japanese, and ASL (though I'm far from fluent in any of them).

I'd love to study Korean, since East Asian Languages interest me (though Chinese intimidates me more). French and German interest me as well. If I ever got that far, I'd like to throw in Swahili or Yoruba for that dash of something exotic.

I realize that unless to choose some specific career choices, being a polyglot's rather useless. However, I find the good ol'-fashioned "persuit of knowledge" entertaining. =P

fgamer Mar 7, 2006 10:44 AM

Korean because I already know chinese and japanese; that's the only language I have to learn before I can go to all 3 big east asian countries without any problem of communication.

Shoops Mar 7, 2006 11:10 AM

I'm Khmer and i'd like to learn some Chinese, Japanese, perhaps learning to write Khmer because i was born in France...

DeLorean Mar 7, 2006 11:42 AM

I 2nd the latin thing, that would be bad ass.

Matt Mar 7, 2006 11:46 AM

I want to continue my studies in Spanish and become fluent in it. To do this I suppose I would need to spend time in either Mexico (n get shot lol) or Spain though.

I also wouldn't mind learning Japanese. Not because I enjoy anime and videogames, mind you.
Rather, I'm pleasantly obsessed with Haruki Murakami and want to read his newest novels without waiting years for the translation.

ComCrimson Mar 7, 2006 12:08 PM

I wouldn't mind learning some Dutch or German. Sadly i only know words from Rammstein songs because i can't be bothered to learn it. I also really want to learn Japanese because i think the language is absolutely gorgeous. I know the odd word and phrase but again, i probably won't learn it any time soon because i'm too lazy.

Eleo Mar 7, 2006 12:20 PM

Well I'd like to completely learn the languages I've already studied; Spanish and German. Honestly I'd like to learn pretty much any language I can; even obscure ones; but I don't think I have the brain power to keep up with so many languages.

I have a thirst for knowledge but my brain can drink enough knowledge at once :(

FLEX Mar 7, 2006 12:23 PM

French, Spanish and Japanese. Already know bits and pieces of German....just enough to find my way to the bathroom.

Eleo Mar 7, 2006 12:25 PM

My guess is that Germans know enough English to help you find your way to a bathroom.

German kids start learning English in grade school; most American students get a foreign language shoved down their throats in college if not high school.

FLEX Mar 7, 2006 12:35 PM

And I wish I had started learning these languages when I was younger. The older you get, the harder learning the stuff becomes.

octo Mar 7, 2006 02:16 PM

I am extremely interested in learning Japanese, but am not sure if I will ever get around to it unless I decide to take it in Uni.

xen0phobia Mar 7, 2006 02:29 PM

I'm currently taking Japanese and planning to study abroad in the coming years. If that works out and i get half-way fluent in Japanese i'd like to go to graduate school and take chinese. My major is computer information systems (Business) so chinese would be nice to know.

Blanka Mar 7, 2006 02:34 PM

I took Latin for a couple years, but haven't touched it in ages.
Right now I'd like to learn either German or Russian. =)

Having studied Latin for about three years now (at school and on my own), I'd like to continue studying it, for one. Other than that, I'd like to study German one day (considering my heritage or somesuch) and French. (The latter mainly because it sounds hard. At least, it does to me.) Of course, that's what I come up with at this moment; I tend to desire to want to learn languages sporadically >_>

goldeneye2131 Mar 7, 2006 02:48 PM

I've always aspired to work for the government, and being multi-lingual is encouraged...I've studied spanish throughout school but never got the interest. I'll perhaps try to study russian through school or somewhere online, as I gained interest when my dad visited there. It's tough to pick up a new language, and I'm not certain that I have all that time anymore...

JackyBoy Mar 7, 2006 02:48 PM

I am not big on asian languages myself. I find they sound rather annoying. I would like to speak several European languages though such as Russian, Italian, and French. I may eventually take some Russian language courses while I'm at university.

Acro-nym Mar 7, 2006 02:50 PM

I've been studying Latin for two years, currently enrolled in a Latin III course. I'm quite fond of the language, as evidenced by my recent signature (to return at a later date). In the future, I'd like to study Russian, but no not how I will accomplish this as of yet.

Rydia Mar 7, 2006 03:19 PM

German and Japanese are two I wouldn't mind studying. I have a hard time with Korean, and although I'm already bilingual, I think learning a fourth language (along with Spanish) could be interesting.

Peter Mar 7, 2006 03:53 PM

Comcrimson, dutch is pretty hard for foreigners to learn, since it contains tons of exceptions and some rules that really don't make any sense. German's much easier, since it's a lot more logical, and once you get the whole dativ/genetiv shit you're good to go. Maybe I'm just biased towards it though, since it resembles my local dialect a lot.

I've learned (English and French) or am learning (Japanese) most of the languages I want to learn, except for Korean. It's an optional language in my third year of Japanese, and it's one of the main reasons why I started these studies in the first place.

Gr|M Mar 7, 2006 04:44 PM

I've been taking spanish since i was in 7th grade...sophomore in college now...and think I'll stick with it but I know a little mandarin I really want to learn more Mandarin or Japanese. and I know a tiny bit of Russian.

Hachifusa Mar 7, 2006 04:52 PM

I'm learning Japanese currently, and I've studied Spanish and French in school, two and three years respectively. I also 'studied' Hebrew, but I didn't realize that until later.

I would really like to take on Latin someday, but at this point, I just kind of want to perfect what languages I've already begun.

It's actually quite simple. The writing system isn't too difficult, and the language is basic enough to grasp. And there are not a lot of sounds that are difficult to pull off for the native English speaker.

Not to sound picky, but do mean trilingual? If not, I'm really confused.

Mr. Danielsard Mar 7, 2006 06:47 PM

The Languages that i would like to learn include German, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and russian:juggler:

Dekoa Mar 7, 2006 06:49 PM

I tried spanish at one point and I really didn't like it. No offense but I really just don't want to learn a language that is taking over my current country. You don't see me living in Norway and speaking Japanese do you?

I have two languages when I think on this subject. The first would have to be Japanese since I want to learn how to communicate with our tech buddies accross the see and perhaps live over there someday. I would also like to learn Norwegiann because it may be my Heritigal (is that even a word?) right. My dad's side is majorly Norwegian. My fav dish from their side so far is Lefsa. mmmmm....
Yeah definetely those two.

Mucknuggle Mar 7, 2006 06:50 PM

I'd like to take some more French classes in order to improve my French. Being from Quebec I'm quite embarassed by my level of French. I am anglophone, but still . . .

I'd also like to learn Spanish and Japanese. I doubt that I'll ever learn either of them, but I am currently working on improving my French.

Gechmir Mar 7, 2006 06:52 PM

I'm already rather skilled in Spanish (at least in this region of Texas. Regional language twists and such...), I want to learn more German, Japanese, and wanna try my hand at Russian someday. I've got an ear for language, so if I ever get the chance to learn them, I will. But I'd prefer not to do the whole self-teach method, ie: listening to tapes and crap.

Pill Mar 7, 2006 07:28 PM

I'm currently learning Mandarin and French. Other languages that I would like to study would be GERMAN (top of the list!!!!) and RUSSIAN. After that, maybe Italian. I don't have a real interest in Spanish, it would be tremendously useful, but I don't think I would like to learn it.

Btw I heard that studying Latin is really exhausting. What do you do to improve you grammar? reading the latin bible? I tried studying latin independently through wikipedia, but all I got is frustation x-x.

In my opinion, study german first before french, it will make things easier (well for me at least).

hmm I guess majority of people here would choose chinese mandarin, japanese, korean, german and french. oh yeah, does anyone have interest to study hungarian language? I heard that language is extermely complicated, it has around 35 grammar cases or more.

grodiens Mar 7, 2006 08:47 PM

I live in Germany since three years and it was TERRIBLE to learn germany.
I want to lear english, french and spanish. Especially english that is so important.

Grammar isn't so much the issue at times as it is vocabulary. Wikipedia/Wikibooks don't do--or didn't a few months ago--a good job of teaching certain things, in my opinion: they seem to be written for those who have already studied a romance language before.

Latin grammar has always made sense to me; it's always been so logical. The issue in studying it comes in certain portions of the language's grammar: things like the Latin subjunctive take a bit of work to get learned. (There's a good deal more to the subjunctive in Latin than in English.)
If you need something to read and want to learn Latin, Wheelock's Latin is an excellent book for that sort of thing. For some, the language in it is a bit confusing, so a simpler book might be better. (Any good book should have macrons (long marks, in other words) for pronunciation's sake.)

Radical Mar 7, 2006 08:51 PM

I'm planning on learning Russian and Japanese in the near future, as well as continuing to learn German. Language is my favorite subject in school, so I'm going to be taking as many language classes as possible next year.

Jiraiya Mar 7, 2006 08:54 PM

Id really like to learn the languages of my family, namely Italian and German. A lot of my relatives still live in both of those countries and I plan to visit them someday and Id like to speak there native tounge.

Dyesan Mar 7, 2006 09:00 PM

Been "studying" Cantonese-Mandarin for the good part of my life, did Spanish since 5th grade, currently self studying Japanese. I want to learn Arabic, and also Goa'uld.

MysteryRidah Mar 7, 2006 09:05 PM

Its not that i want to learn new languages, i would like to - Speak in tongues and hear and understand those who speak different tongues - $till LegendaryU2K

I pray about it, but dont think it would happen, dont matter how righteous i become.

Fire Fox Mar 7, 2006 09:11 PM

For me, Shanghai is getting better and better. So, learning Shanghai's dialect might be useful, so if I ever get a chance to learn another language, I'll choose Shanghai dialect. Or Chinese with real Chinese accent which I don't have currently.

Single Elbow Mar 7, 2006 09:47 PM

Latin, French, German, Russian, Italian.

And some more I forgot to mention.

Lost_solitude Mar 7, 2006 10:17 PM

First I am going to learn spanish. It is pathetic that I am full blooded Boricua and I can't even speak conversational spanish. This summer I am taking classes to learn spanish since I was stupid enough to not take it for highschool. Next I would say Japanese. Not tomany People I know closly(my family mostly) are as interested in there pop culture as I am. I am not exactly a fanatic but I still think heck why not.

Safer Serge Mar 7, 2006 11:24 PM

I already speak English fluently, so my next step is learning Italian and Japanese. Perhaps (why not?), I'll try and learn also the Black Speech of Mordor

Synthesis Mar 7, 2006 11:29 PM

I'm hoping to take on Japanese full-time in addition to my other major once I transfer college's.

Nahual Mar 7, 2006 11:53 PM

First and foremost that language called Spanish(or Castellano to my Bolivian family). Because I am Mexican and Bolivian. I should speak it fluently! I understand it better...

I'm currently learning French in highschool. I want to continue with that as well. I also want to learn Portuguese and Italian.

I would really like to learn German. I know how to say a couple of things. I think that Germany is a beautiful place and I'm going there this summer for 2 weeks! Woot woot.

I want to learn Japanese before my death. For the anime/mango shows.

Then if I ever get those down. I'd like to learn Aymara and Quechua. So I can understand those little cholas down in Bolivia. With their dresses and their long braids, in their groups.

kupomog Mar 8, 2006 12:11 AM

I'm taking Japanese now but after this year, the only Japanese teacher that teaches courses after 202 is retiring so I'd like to be able to continue it elsewhere.

I want to learn German. Got really interested in it when I got into project .hack, and while the language sounds a little...harsh...sometimes, I think it's a cool language. My ex is learning it now, he really enjoys it.

And I also want to learn Hawaiian. It was mandatory to learn really basic Hawaiian in elementary school (like colors and family members), but since then I've never gone on with it. I think it's a really beautiful language and I would love to study it, considering that I live in Hawai`i.

Magi Mar 8, 2006 12:19 AM

I know Chinese, and I thought that would give me an edge in studying Japanese... NOT. At least not from the get go. I have quite a few books (most of which are given to me by my aunt, who teaches Japanese. >.> ) in Japanese, and I'd very much likes to read them. Although so far I haven't menage to take a Japanese courses. For some reason there is only one or two first year level Japanese open each semester, and those tend to fill up quick. I think I am the only one in my immediate family who does not speak at least a little Japanese. >.>

shadowlink56 Mar 8, 2006 01:14 AM

Studied French is High school for 4 years and went to France and lived with a french family for a while (which they say damn near counts as a fifth year).
I inevitably picked up some Spanish while working in the restaurant business, but I'd like to learn more.
In college I took some ASL, which is a very fun language to learn and very eye-opening.
I'd also like to learn Japanese (like most), but I may have missed that chance for now . . .

UltimaIchijouji Mar 8, 2006 02:35 AM

I have such a long list of languages I want to learn. I really think I might become a linguist because it seems like I love languages.

Right now I'm learning Japanese, almost fluent. So it's almost time to choose.

Next up I think I'll learn Korean, I also want ot learn a dialect of Chinese, Sanskrit, Latin, some form of Norse or Swedish, and French. Maybe Italian. I can't really say I have a desire to learn Spanish, since I took it for three years and could only think about learning Japanese, but it might just be one of those things that just happens.

Star Man Aevum Mar 8, 2006 02:41 AM

Right now, I'm making it a personal goal to learn Norwegian, for that's my matriarichal roots. In fact, if I knew it already, I'd greatly consider moving to Norway and staying. I'd also throw in the predecessors to it, like Proto-Norse.

Since I am a native English speaking person, attaining knowledge on it's earlier forms as well. I'd actually run around speaking Old English if I could all the time.

Along with that, I'm eager for the other Scandinavian languages and Finnish. Latin and Greek are also high up on my list since they are the classical adademic languages. And I say fuck the Romantic languages. French and Spanish are the most boring things I've ever heard.

kat Mar 8, 2006 02:48 AM

I'd love to learn Russian. I find it freakishly romantic for some reason. Also it's supposedly one of the harder languages to learn so I think it'd be interesting to see the breakdown of that language.

Melee Mar 8, 2006 08:17 AM

I want to learn better English and I want to learn spanish and mandarin before I'm 30.

jouhou Mar 8, 2006 10:00 AM

I learned Italian in High School but I forgot most of the stuff, a quick review should bring a lot back.
Well, since I've started watching Asian movies I need to improve my Chinese.
I speak Cantonese but need more work on it. I want to learn two other chinese dialects, Korean, Japanese, and Germain. So that'd be a total of 5 languages.
It seems a lot but it's possible. Only problem is finding someone to practice with, preferably someone native to that language.

EDIT:
Whoops, I typed Germain instead of German. haha, my friend's name is Germain so that might be the reason.

Put Balls Mar 8, 2006 10:05 AM

I want to continue my Russian and German studies. My Russian is very poor, only took courses for three years. It would be very handy around where I live, since I see and hear the language almost daily. Spying on the conniving crooks that all Russian people are. >=O

German I took for 5 years and spoken it sounds so cool and looks cool written, so I'd just like to show off to people. Also my future profession might actually require me to learn more of it, since some of the study books are in German only.

Cool, hope you will manage to achieve that. But is esperante = spanish?
btw, what happens in that Hauptbahnhof?

I poked it and it made a sad sound Mar 8, 2006 10:24 AM

I kind of wish I spoke Aramaic for no good reason.

I can comprehend most romance languages enough to get by. I speak French (better than I write it), but despite my entire family using it on a consistent basis, I am completely out of practice. I've considered spending another few summers in France with the family just to tune up, but I just never have time or money.

I'd like to learn German, if only because its so powerful sounding. I'd love to learn Japanese or Chinese as well, if only because they're both challenging languages to learn, and not very traditionally taught.

Also, Esperanto is not Spanish.

esprante I've never heat...hm sorry, don't understand.

Hauptbahnhof is german and means 'Train mainstation',
the main station is already beautiful, but outside of the station are many unfriendly humans (peoples) and I can say one: there is not Germans.

(hope you understand me)

If you arrived in germany, you must visit the Deutsche Museum (german museum) :) and Olympia Park. But before I continue to talk.. where do you come exactly to Germany?

Last year I've visit Kentucky ... and it was soooooooooooooo fantastic awesome!! my uncle lives in kentucky. :D :D

eriol33 Mar 8, 2006 10:42 PM

Oh sorry, I got mixed up spanish with esperante. in fact esperante is an artificial language (checked from babylon). I wonder if any of you study this language? actually this language was made in purpose to become international language, but since everyone nowadays could use english, it becomes obsolete.

I never have chance to go abroad... sigh... but I really want to go to Neuschwanstein (New Rock Swan if you translate it?), I want to see that beautiful Ludwig II castle! just so amazingly beautiful...:p

Oh ok :D, yes english is more importantly for me.

Schloß(castle) Neuschwanstein <- I think, it can not be translated , like Düsseldorf. Yes this castle is very beautiful, Ludwig II. our King of bavaria. :)

I hope I'll be able to visit China, I'm a big Fan of Jackie Chan... he have showed in an interview Hong Kong. That was awesome.

Stuttgart, oh my god... it has beautiful places, too. but they talk there differently as normally, exactly the same as in East Germany. *big smile*

Chinese in not that hard to get a decent grasp of. If anyone is dumb it's me and I did it.

That being said, I'd like to become better in Mandarin Chinese, Korean, Japanese and French and learn a the meanings of a few complicated english words to. =o

Acro-nym Mar 9, 2006 03:27 PM

Now that I think about it, I believe some unpopular languages like Romansh and Maltese would both interesting to learn.

I'd like to learn German, simply because I like the sound of it. I used to take French in school but I dropped it so I can take more courses, too bad my school doesn't have a German class, cuz i would've taken it for sure.

Chinese is THAT hard dude x_X;.

My friend got a perfect E for his mandarin class last semester though I have warned him to pick up japanese instead (so that he might would have gotten an A like me, heh). From what I've heard, Chinese has complicated rule of sound system, speak it with different tone and you get different meanings. OMG, just how Chinese ancestors created them??

Even though I'm chinese, I couldn speak any of it, but I will definitely going to learn it, hoping that someday I will return to China.

Btw talking with natives from different nationality like you really amazes me, not to mention that they keep saying their complicated language is goddamn easy while it maybe takes non-natives about 7 years to master them:borg:

I'm currently learning how to read and write in chinese and speak in Manderin. Hopefully I'll be good enough to get by in China. I also want to relearn my French and Spanish. I learned Spanish for 3 years back in high school, but it's a little rusty now. As for French, I use to speak it when i was 7, but I lost it when I moved to the United States.

C++, Java and French. And Russian.

Fake_plastic Mar 10, 2006 03:29 PM

Well, I'll say english, 'cause french is my first language.
If you've got french questions, ask away ;)

Satsujinken Mar 11, 2006 01:54 PM

I really want to learn Japanese.. i think the language sounds cool, plus their culture' overwhelms me, the games, manga, anime, j-stuff.. I love it! Furthermore, I'm a Chinese that lives in The Netherlands.. but I can't speak any word Chinese, so i think i want to learn that also.

I did learn some Latin and old Greek on school, it's pretty interesting, since, for example, many European words are kinda derived from it.

Graffiacane Mar 11, 2006 02:06 PM

I would like to learn Latin, but I don't have time to dedicate myself to it...

AlogiA Mar 11, 2006 02:30 PM

Sometimes I think there are too many languages I want to learn. I would like to speak Greek, Russian, Spanish and Japanese.
I already speak English (oh really? :D), Serbian, German, a bit French and I also know some things in Albanian.

splur Mar 11, 2006 05:21 PM

Japanese, Chinese, Korean, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Latin. Well, at least 4 of them have a very similar base, one of them IS the base lol.

AlogiA Mar 11, 2006 05:59 PM

I think before you start studying a language, you should at least try it a bit.

Deutsch zum Beispiel ist eine ziemlich einfache Sprache, da sie dem Englischen etwas ähnelt. Sollte kein Problem sein!

Spoiler:
German for example is a pretty simple language, because it is a bit similar to English. Should not be a problem.

Français est une langue très difficile! Elle a un très illogique grammaire pour moi!:aargh:

Spoiler:
French is a very hard language! It has for me a very illogical grammar!:aargh:

Ali naj bolji jezik u cijelum svetu je Srpski! Dorbro, jeste malo težak, ali zato ga pričaju samo pametni i kultivirani ljudi. Učite Srpski! :D

Spoiler:
But the best language in the entire world is Serbian! Okay, it is a bit hard, but for that, only the educated and the cultivated people are speaking it. Learn Serbian! :D

John Carey Mar 11, 2006 06:07 PM

I've really wanted to seriously study German, but I'm not sure where to start. I already speak decent Spanish, and wouldn't mind throwing another language in there, especially since I might end up spending a few years in Germany at some point.

Killy Mar 11, 2006 06:25 PM

Right now, I'm in the process of learning Russian and Japanese. I already speak fluent English, Swedish, German and Serbian, so after - hopefully - learning Russian and Japanese, I'll have a decent collection of languages in my trunk.

EDIT: And I definitely agree with AlogiA, Serbian is a difficult language to master, but as a language it's very rich and interesting.

XerxesTheMighty Mar 11, 2006 06:28 PM

I have a few Klingon dictionaries and have been studying off and on for the past few years. I'd like to be able to speak it fluently, but just like highschool spanish class: laziness prevailes. I'd like to learn Japanese and some Irish or Scottish Goidelic/Gaelic.

eriol33 Mar 11, 2006 11:36 PM

Wow... serbian seems rivaling Latin, hungarian, chinese, and hebrew in term of difficulty. I wonder how you native grow with it:juggler:

ryoushin Mar 11, 2006 11:56 PM

I'd wanna learn Italian or Japanese. I'm Japanese, so yeah. But oh man...the Italian language sounds so sexy. =0

Luceid Mar 12, 2006 12:05 AM

I actually would love to study Japanese, Latin and German, though the first two are quite rare to, at least in my grounds. Japanese is because of anime mainly, and latin was something that got my attention while reading some books; tried to learn it with some books, but it was quite hard so dropped it, also had to do different things around.

Hopefully there's a chance to study these in the future.

cos360 Mar 12, 2006 12:20 AM

I wish I continued French in highschool. I stopped after Grade 10 and really regret it. I think I'll just start self-studying, but it's so hard to find places and people to practice on. Ha ha!

I also want to learn Latin, Japanese, Tagalog (no one mentioned this...mwa ha ha!!), Spanish and Arabic. Hey, I can dream, though I'd like to be at least tri-lingual by the time I die! Ha ha!

LZ Mar 12, 2006 12:26 AM

I grew up learning both English and Spanish, studied French for three years in middle school, and am now in my 2nd year of studying Latin. I was going to take German next year, but the only German teacher got fired or some shit so my damn school just took it off the program. So I guess I'd like to learn German, everyone always says that it's super easy to learn.

Thanatos Mar 12, 2006 12:35 AM

Latin and Spanish would do. I want to, but it's hard for me to find the time or the faciliities that can provide me with a fast and effective learning method.

Dee Mar 12, 2006 02:25 AM

I definitely want to master Mandarin someday. Alas, it is easier said than done. I'm also a fan of Russian, I don't know why. Sounds interesting to learn as well.

Rangel Mar 12, 2006 02:47 AM

I've always wanted to learn Hebrew and Arabic. Those two have always intureged me.

And so has japanese.

And for my heritage, I've wanted to learn german.

Gumby Mar 12, 2006 03:14 AM

Mandarin, Thai, Aramaic, German, and Gaelic. Finding the time to actually devote study to any of these languages is my problem...

nazpyro Mar 12, 2006 03:58 AM

I did French in high school, but in my whole time in college, I never took a language course. I liked French and somewhat wished I continued on with it. Whatever.

I also wanted to study Japanese, since I'm a fanboy. I also wanted to study Chinese, since I have so many Chinese friends in the university. I also wanted to study Tagalog (Filipino), since I'm Filipino and can't speak the language. I couldn't even get into Japanese or Chinese courses because they were time-demanding courses that were always scheduled everyday in such a way that I would not be able to take my engineering requirements/electives. So those courses never happened. Maybe later in life.

My knowledge of Chinese(mandarin, cantonese and hokkien) looks like it's gonna be useful someday. Haha.

Claliel Mar 12, 2006 06:33 AM

What's that one language the main theme of Legend of Mana is sung in? Swedish? Whatever it is it's a beautiful, eloquent language... I think it'd be fun to learn that someday. Maybe even just a couple of words. ^_^

DBCE Slayer Mar 12, 2006 06:38 AM

I'd like to learn German after listening to Rammstein so much and my English teacher speaks fluent German and English is her second language.

It is not THAT hard if you grow up with this language. Serbian has a similar structure like Hungarian or Greek and is very closely related to Bulgarian, Russian and other Slavonic languages. But if you 've been growing up with German, English and some other "simple" languages, Serbian can be really desperating to learn. Most of the Serbs, Croats and Bosnians I know (which also includes me) have much problems in learning French, since in the Serbian language you speak the words like they are written what you really cant't say of French.

Elcee Mar 12, 2006 08:05 AM

I speak Japanese, German and Spanish sufficiently. I'm still studying for proficiency. Beyond the foreign, I know English on an upper-middle grade of Master Level. Not important or impressive until you find yourself in an IQ society. Waste of most peoples' time.

On and off for the past year, I've been attempting to learn Japanese, just cause it's a cool language, and I think it'd be awesome to write with kanji and not have a lot of people know what I'm doing.

I haven't worked on it for a while though, so I should make a point of getting back at it, cause I have a lot of work ahead of me.

eriol33 Mar 13, 2006 03:38 AM

I can speak English (of course =P) and i speak 3 different Chinese languages (Cantonese, Shanghainese and Mandarin).
I did a year of Jap...(can't remember much though)
I'm doing German at the moment but not very well, get mix up with all the grammars.
I also just finish a basic course of Sign Language (if that counts as a language)
I'd love to learn Latin, Spanish and Russian.

Shiny McShine Mar 13, 2006 06:56 AM

I'm white and speak semi-fluent Spanish, but I'd like to really fuly learn the language, as well as Maya and Italian.

I'd also like to learn Lakota-Sioux Native, but since I am only a descendent of that I'd be hard pressed to find any left.

I don't know about Serbian, Latin, Hungarian and Chinese, but Hebrew isn't actually hard to learn. According to my friend, learning Hebrew is as easy as learning Afrikaans, which is apparently easier than learning English. [I have to add also, that it's just as easy to forget Hebrew--as I could speak and understand the language when i was younger; now, the only thing I can say is, ani lo medaberet ivrit, not one bit!]

For me, it's Korean. East Asia in general has fascinated me for a long time. From all the stories and pictures, Korea is a more hectic Japan. That's not to say it's just minijap or anything, as their culture and language is very destinct.

I just think it would be incredible to walk down these streets, and go on these trains~

I'm currently double-majoring in Japanese as well. Going to study abroad in Japan this summer in Iida, Nagano prefecture (1998 Winter Olympic site).
French would be another language that I'd love to learn. I took two years of French when I was in high school and loved the language because it's so beautiful. Maybe in the near future when I have a chance~ ^^

If anyone is interested in studying abroad in Japan this summer, check out the website www.asianinterstage.com/summer2006japan
9 credit hours for 9 weeks; and if you don't have previous Japanese learning experience, you'll get 12 credit hours for 9 weeks.

eriol33 Mar 13, 2006 10:29 PM

Hey yunnie, I thought we must pay a lot for that study. the japanese language culture centre, the place where I'm currently studying japanese actually have such program, but damn, you must pay around $5000 for that.

turicus Mar 14, 2006 01:01 AM

French is nice, I spent 4 years learning it. I'm interested in languages and wish I had more time to commit to them; my college doesn't have any foreign language courses unfortunately. Moth, Gaelic would be sweet to learn. Difficult but awesome...seeing as how I have strong Irish roots.

I've also taught myself some very basic Polish, for comparison, it's like Russian, however, the most beautiful Language i've heard is Italian, and someday to be able to speak that would be great, but aside from the oh-so-common romance languages:

I've considered learning Hindi. I've never met a person of Indian descent that I did not enjoy the company of, and a friend once described to me Hindi as a very good conversational language. I'd like to give that a try someday. Swahili as well I've heard flow's nicely, though I don't know if it can match Italian.

I'd better get on this; only one lifetime to learn it all...lol or maybe i'm overly ambitious at this late hour.

iokcs Mar 14, 2006 05:19 AM

well... id love to study japanese since im gonna be moving to japan eventually in my life... at least visit there for a year or so... and spanish. yea, im mexican, but my mother/father never taught the languange to me... and it was never really a requirement in high school....so id like to learn it eventually...

dark1x Mar 14, 2006 07:33 AM

Well, I'm somewhat fluent in Japanese now (after many years of study and spending time in Japan), but there is still more to learn. Perhaps, down the line, I might attempt to study Mandarin or Korean (easy writing system).

It was quite rewarding studying Japanese and I've learned quite a bit about the process of studying a foreign language. I wouldn't mind doing it again.

What our professor told us was: It's better to prepare around $6000, because you have to add the airfare and personal expense (like whatever you're going to buy). But thinking about $6000 for 9-12 hour credits, plus get to travel different cities and stay in host family, that isn't really too much.

CrimsonSerenade Mar 15, 2006 04:46 AM

Well, being Filipino myself, I know 4 dialects of the Filipino language, including Tagalog, because my parents and everyone else around me spoke to me in Tagalog. I did take French for three years in high school, so I'm pretty proficient in it, and I know a small bit of Spanish.

My friend is currently teaching me Japanese, a language that I've wanted to learn for a while now. I also have a curiosity to study Latin, and maybe perhaps Chinese, either Mandarin or Cantonese.

Winter Storm Mar 16, 2006 04:06 PM

I was taught lating in the 6th grade and forgot it later on in life. I took up italian and tried to self teach it..and to no avail. Italian is a language I would love to learn and perhaps dutch or german.

Yggdrasil Mar 16, 2006 04:10 PM

Well right now I'd like to brush up a bit on my Chinese skills, I can speak and understand it quite well, I just can't read or write for shit. But new languages I would like to pick up are Japanese, German, and Latin.

Minion Mar 16, 2006 04:55 PM

I would like to learn Japanese for practical reasons. I'd also like to learn Greek, Aramaic and Hebrew so that I can read the original texts of the Bible. Apart from that, I guess I would like a working knowledge of all European languages.

eriol33 Mar 18, 2006 05:28 AM

Is there major difference between Hebrew and Aramaic? I heard they are languages of same roots, these languages both using alephbet. I want to study it too, but I dont think I could find one of teacher of these languages quite easily.

I'd like to speak fluent German. Every phrase sounds like an execution.

Ya Volh! /clack

MisterMercenary Mar 19, 2006 08:31 AM

I am learning french at school. I'd like to learn german like some of my friends.

ava lilly Mar 19, 2006 10:29 PM

I wouldn't mind learning how to properly speak French. I had taken it for eleven years in school (juniour kindergarden to grade nine), but all we ever seemed to be taught was how to conjugate verbs, not how to actually speak it. also since my country's official languages are English and French, it'd be nice to say I can speak both fluently. you get better job opportunities that way.

I would love to learn Italian. I love the sound of it, and I would love to go to Italy some day to see all the famous masterworks and the sites. I think it'd be a better experience if I knew the language.

a few others I'd like to learn just for the hell of it: Latin (the root of many other languages), Spanish (another lovely sounding one), Greek (mostly for the same reasons as Italian), Egyptian (nerd), Gaelic (Irish heritage, might as well).

doyeon Mar 19, 2006 11:00 PM

i've studied four years of spanish, but it's quite useless for me. I'd rather study some japanese so i can translate all my imported games! =)

Goggles Mar 20, 2006 01:59 AM

Well I am somewhat fluent in Spanish which has made picking up some basic French and German easier so the language that I would really like to know now is Japanese probably as it seems quite complex.

AshRiot Mar 20, 2006 06:35 PM

I'm french and i learn english it's very difficult for me but i learn :D

Agent Olive Mar 20, 2006 07:07 PM

I'm going to start learning Mandarin pretty soon, that should be fun.

Elidibs Mar 20, 2006 08:29 PM

Existent: Russian, Old English, Latin, whatever the hell the Babylonians spoke, Egyptian, German, Swedish.
Fictional: Goa'uld, Black Speech.

I don't know when, how, or where the hell I'd use any of these, but whatever. People'd still be more prone to hire me.

'So, do you know any foreign languages?'
'Yes. I know English, Spanish, Russian, Old English, Latin, Babylonian, Egyptian, German, and Swedish. I also know Goa'uld and Black Speech.'
'Oh my. Even though four out of those eleven aren't used anymore and two don't exist, I'll hire you anyways.'
