Earth Defence Force 2017
Oh hey so EARTH DEFENCE FORCE X. Previously the Earth Defence Force games have been developed with a low budget as part of the Japanese Simple 2000 (because they cost 2000 yen :moreyouknow: ) range of games for PlayStation 2. But even then, they did some mind boggling stuff considering the hardware and put most big name action games to friggin' shame. Basically, you BLOW STUFF UP. You blow up ANTS and BUILDINGS and GODZILLA'S and EVERYTHING. You must defend Earth by pretty much destroying it! The scale of the game's incredible and now the developer's been able to run wild on much more powerful hardware with a bigger budget soooo here's where I post screenshots that I've shrunk down because they stretched the hell out of the internet! Long sentence GO.

The game's due out December in Japan, with American and PAL releases UNKNOWN at the moment. The first two EDF games on PS2 got PAL releases (well, the second one's still due out, keeps getting pushed back), but for whatever reason no publisher picked them up in America. Though I imagine since D3 recently set up over there, they'll release it eventually. MORE SECRET EDIT FUN: March for both the US and Europe! HUGE images. Video (YOU SHOULD PROBABLY JUST SKIP THE FIRST HALF UNLESS YOU WANT TO LISTEN TO A JAPANESE WOMAN MAKE BABOON NOISES) Video of EDF2 on PS2 for the hell of it because it's amazing. |
That actually looks kinda great. Not Gears of War great, but rather decent. I would buy it if it was cheap. (Which Xbox 360 games arent'. $90 lolol)
Running around, shooting giant robots and huge ants. Cool. And lol at the ad. I'd gag the girl and then bang her. Sooo cute <3 |
Wow giant ants; I'd kill it. That's kind of a weird enemy to be fighting.
|
Wow, I thought that this was supposed to be like Earth Defense Force for the SNES. I was like "They actually made a sequel to that game?"
Still, looks pretty nice. I might try it sometime. |
Graphics look like a low-budget Lost Planet at first glance. Still, the premise does look interesting. Not something I'll be looking forward to specifically, but perhaps moreso when it is nearer to release.
|
Ahaha, I love how the male EDF soldier has the same generic Xbox 360 default texture-blur-glimmer-covered-in-vaseline-hello-perfect-dark-zero-effect filter as every other 360 game.
Earth Defence Force 2 was brilliant, and X looks to be even more hilarious. The scale looks absolutely fantastic. I don't even own a 360, but I can't frickin' wait. |
This looks so awesome. I loved the first two and even Sandlot's other games using the engine like Remote Control Dandy and Robot Alchemic Drive. Here's hoping for another big robot game this generation.
|
It's hardly a giant enemy crab, but it will do :O PROBABLY WON'T SEE IT HERE ;_; "Earth Defense Force? Fuck that, let's bring out Kingdom Farts 3/Final Fantasy 12,000 and ignore everything else~"
Then they'd shat on some Front Mission 5 box >_>; |
I am dying to play the PS2 versions, but it is next to impossible to find! Anyone know where I could get it?
|
Did you try PlayAsia, NCSX, or Ebay?
|
I tried playasia but only found the tactics version (i'm guessing its an RTS) and lik-sang didn't have it listed. I'll give NCSX a shot and if that fails, I might consider Ebay, but I'm hesitant. Thanks for the help!
|
Yeeeah, Tactics doesn't really look that thrilling. Painful load times for every battle sequence and everything. Also you could always keep a look out for Monster Attack in the pre-owned sections of EB, the PAL release of the first EDF. It got a pretty limited release, though.

EDF2 is a deserved cult classic and it always sells, so importers tend to keep it stocked pretty well. Though since you're in Australia, you could hang on and see if they finally get the PAL version released like they'd planned for a while now (as Global Defence Force). |
I saw this game a few weeks ago...and it looks so ridiculous, yet it could be entertaining. I mean honestly...Godzilla! Ants! Giant Robots! You can't help but smile when you see this game. Might be a nice budget game, something you can waste a few hours with from time to time. I might have a hard time keeping myself from giggling like a schoolgirl when I play it and find myself defending the world from robots with guns bigger than skyscrapers and giant ants descending from UFOs.
|
I've gotta be honest, I love the concept. Not so much the giant ants, but some of the scenes in that ad look seriously insane.
|
They've gone and totally renamed it, changing the X to a 3. This will cause massive confusion now! There's also this new trailer. GAAAAASSSPP gigantic bloody metal thing in the distance. Oh and there's no online co-op, just split screen. =(
|
lawl @ EARTH DEFENCE FORCES
THERE MUST BE MULTIPLE FORCES, FORCE MUST BE ONLY ONE PERSON Still, no online co-op is a big bobofrownie. I would have thought the whole point of putting the series on 360 was easy multiplayer :( How about online splitscreen? =o |
|
Wasn't this game supposed to be low-budget or something? It's going to be 7,100 yen. That's 1,000 yen more expensive than Blue Dragon. I wonder how well its going to do...
|
I wish they had online play.
You could so set this up like a hack n slash and have peeps just pop into massive battles and help you basically clear out the earth. Set up small objectives like time limits or number of kills. I see all those other guys like yours running around, so I think that would fit in nicely. |

That huge robot at the end of the trailer looks like it could fucking step on the largest of colossi.
If they aren't smart enough to release this in the US, I might actually import. I hope it's region free... |
Is this related at all to the SNES game called "Earth Defense Force"?
|
Quote:
The game is called The Chikyuu Boueigun (or boueigan, not sure), "Earth Defence Force" or "Terran Defence Force" is just an english name translated for it since there's no official translation as of yet. The military unit in the game is called E.D.F. which of course makes easy applying. |
BUMPAGE for the news that HELL HAS FUCKING FROZE OVER.
THIS BITCH IS US BOUND! Honestly, this game had a ONE IN A MILLION SHOT of coming here. That is HOT. I wouldn't pay $60 for it, but for a more bargain price ($30 anyone?), I would totally bite. |
That is AWESOME. =D D3 America finally makes a good decision. It only took them what, three thousand terrible cartoon licensed GBA games to realize they need to do better. I wonder if this means they'll also release D3 Japan's other 360 game. =x

AHA! I've been importing these Simple 2000 games for ages now (although I always referred to them as "THE" games), and they're absolutely wonderful (well, varying degrees of wonderful, stupid, and just plain crazy). This is definitely one of the best franchises in the series, and seeing these screenshots has got me well excited, so I'm thrilled to see a Western launch.
Hoping for Daibijin sequel! http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/2504/05fl2.jpg Ohoho! |
That'd be excellent. :tpg: Maybe they'd give the sequel more than just six levels and the frame rate wouldn't completely self destruct when crazy alien things on Riho's head shoot lasers! Or maaaaybe they'd just focus all development on upgrading the jiggle physics!
|
This game is the bomb!
I finished Earth Defense Force 1 & 2 (aka The_Chikyuu_Boueigun 1 & 2) They are fantastic! Coop mode is the blast, you have real freedom, nearly Halo 1 like. Wide over 100 different weapons (to unlock all the weapons, is real fun). There are some huge weapon in it, like mini atom bomb, which wipe out a complete city, unbelieveable if you see it the first time. All buildings are destroyable and the enemies are HUUUUUUUGE. The mother alien ship was so huge, I dropped myself on the top and was looking down on the city... HUUUUGE. The coop was so great. We had so much fun playing it. I drove the tank and my friend was standing on the tank driving with me, killing all the aliens. pure fun. I hope they add progressive mode already. Also EDF III looks smoother now, 1 & 2 had serious fps problems. |

Box art revealed, pretty dodgy compared to the Japanese one but OH WELL~
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/...V46599944_.jpg http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/...V37883371_.jpg 2017? Looks like I'll have to rename this thread for the third time. :cmb: March 20th for America, $40. Still no PAL release detaaaiiils. BUY IT Or don't, I guess! |
Did you read the Edge review for it? No more hoverpack girl D:
It's big and fun like before, but with only one new vehicle, there's less variety because you're only controlling the guy now. Still, I wouldn't mind a PAL release, if they could FINALLY MANAGE A PAL RELEASE FOR GLOBAL DEFENCE FORCE ;________; |
Yeah, sucks they left her out of this one. Maybe they'll chuck her in later as a microtransaction, only $700!
"I'm much more useful than you with this!" "Oh yeah?" "Yeah!" "WELL YOU'RE FIRED FROM THE EARTH DEFENSE FORCE" "You could have just asked to borrow my pack, jerk" loool Global Defence Force. ;_; I have no doubt this one will manage to come out before that, and by several months/years! |
I don't mind the wait, it's not like I don't have games to play, just as long as they actually release it. I remember you wrote back in June "Earth Defence Force 2 coming next month, HOORAY!" ;______;
|
Haha yeah. :( And Zombie VS Ambulance! Almost a year long delay is still better than if 505 GameStreet had picked it up instead.
Radio chatter would be cut completely, there'd be text scrolling on the bottom of the screen "GETTINGY TWO THE ALIEN WOW ATTACK RUM NORTH EMERGAENDCY! QUICKLY!" and the box art would be of some fat guy scratching himself in front of a fountain. |
http://www.tothegame.com/res/game/63...t_uk_large.jpg
Yes yes yes, PAL wins for some odd reason. <3 Haha double post someone should ban this guy. |
Oh yeah! And boxart is way more cool than the I'm gonna buy this come release day. And a 6 in Edge? That's rather good.
|
*sigh* Why do we have to get such garbage cover art? This is Mega Man levels of crap.
Irregardless, I've been looking forward to this game for awhile. Robot Alchemic Drive is one of my favorite PS2 games and I love Godzilla. Can't wait to pick this up in March and I'm so glad we're actually getting it here. |
Quote:
That PAL art is GODLY. It reminds me of shitty retro b-movie posters. |
http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=irregardless
It's not standard, but it exists.. As for the box art, yeah I'm loving the PAL one! |
No no, he's right. Oddly enough, I dropped it here and then was posting in some other forum later and started to drop it in a post again, but for whatever reason I stopped and thought "That's odd, why do we have regardless and irregardless?" I thought it was like flammable and inflammable. Then I did a little googling and found out it was frowned upon heavily as a needless prefix.
So technically it exists, but only in the same way 'ain't' exists. REGARDLESS, I'm not using it anymore. |
Woot! A gameplay video just popped up on Xbox Live! I guess this means the game really will be released next week!
|
Actually, it comes out tomorrow. Cannot wait.
|
Awww naaaww, they just delayed it here. Now due out in May (still out in other PAL regions next week.. I think). That gives me time to actually save up for a 360 though~
Spoiler:
|
Well, I got the game, and it's awesome. It's quite similar to EDF2 on PS2, except the graphics are a billion times better. Also, instead of taking on all the aliens alone, you've always got a team with you, although they tend to drop dead really fast at the higher difficulty levels.
|
Yes yes, I also have the game and am having a blast. The game is also WAY WAY fun in co-op. My and a friend are thoroughly enjoying making our way through the game picking up tons of different weapons and trying them out. The sentry guns are hell of amusing.
Also, this game is currently number 1 for really giving that sensation of HUUUUUGE enemies. All of the enemies look really really good and the giant robots are straight jaw-dropping. |
C'mon, next week, get over here... I even bought a second controller! I'm so pumped!

I have to agree on it being the most hilarious co-op game on 360, but I wonder why they decided to simplify it so much compared to EDF2? One less character, and also a lot less badguys.. Still, let's hope they release an EDF2018 or something!
|
This is LESS bad guys??? You mean variety or sheer number? Because yeah, there's not just a wide range of enemies, but I'm totally impressed by how many enemies they can fit on screen at once. Really gives that "OH SHIT WE'RE SURROUNDED" vibe.
|
Ah I only wish they had Online Co-op!
|
Yeah less variety of badguys.. Apparently the PS2 one had almost double? I think that number is a bit exagerated, but I did notice they had several different types of flying ufos and stuff that aren't in the 360 version.
|
Well, I beat it today. I had been taking my time replaying fun levels, attempting to beat some levels on Hardest or Inferno just to see if I could, and farming weapons off Inferno levels.
Fantastic game. Easily my favorite 360 game. |
