Woooo it's about time! FYI, the link to the Diablo song isn't working. I'll vote after it's up.

orion_mk3 Aug 21, 2006 08:59 PM

Link's fixed. Go forth and be voteful.

EDIT:

Air Zonk (Game Rip) - Punk Cyborg Battle 1 Chiptune ahoy. The tune has a nice bit of complexity to it, at times to the point of distracting busyness. I wasn't too fond of the synth theremin, but the rest went down easy.

Civilization IV Official Soundtrack - Baba Yetu Definitely an "African" vibe from this one--it reminds me of the Lion King more than anything else. African vocals almost always strike me the right way, as opposed to Japanese ones, and I dug the sound on display here. Nice instrumental and percussinve backing too--the Civ series has come a long way from the last one I played.

Diablo II Soundtrack - Desert I said in the BSC that Blizzard tends to have rather weak music for its games, especially in comparison to the brilliance of the games themselves. Diablo II is a good example of this--despite great synth (perhaps even live instruments), this track fuzzes into nothing. It gives a definite Arabic feel, but absolutely nothing else. I always played D2 with the music off and my own MP3's in the background, and this is why.

Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne (Game Rip) - Max's Choice - Duty Vs. Passion I was impressed by the MP2 track that showed up many SoTW's ago. This tune isn't as impressive; while it does have a decent string melody, the synth textures that accompany it aren't anything special, and I was hoping the tune could be put through more paces.

Namco Game Sound Express Vol.10 Cyber Sled - Be warped time Techno-funk, that SoTW stalwart, returns. I liked the synthy lead the popped up near the beginning and at the loop, but it's sadly absent from much of the song, leaving nothing but samples and loops to carry the tune, something they couldn't do if it came with handles.

Neo Geo Battle Coliseum (Game Rip) - King Leo's Theme (Arranged Version) The electric guitar chords here are standard-issue, but the piano and strings underneath them, as well as the synth elements, take the track a step further. I wish they weren't so undermixed, though--the guitar overpowers everything in terms of volume, and what it's doing just isn't interesting.

Raystorm - SLAUGHTER HOUR (AREA7) I wasn't digging the SFX at the beginning--they're one of my major music turn-offs--but they luckily fade out. Once the song proper gets started, it's not bad--definitely on the trance side of the techno spectrum, but with enough variation to keep it interesting.

Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (Sega Master System Game Rip) - The Last Dungeon SMS music has never really done much for me, despite being cut from the same cloth as some of my most beloved NES tuneage. The piece is nice enough, rather simple, and pales in comparison to this week's other chiptune offering.

Not a bad bunch to kick SoTW back off with, all things considered.

The Point Spread
3 pts. - Baba Yaga
2 pts. - Punky Cyborg Castle
1 pt. - Max's Choice: Boxers vs. Briefs

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Aug 21, 2006 09:59 PM

Great to have SotW back. The Best Song Contest is a nice diversion, but I enjoy SotW more.

I'm gonna forgo the critiques and just assign some points.

3 Points: Civilization IV Official Soundtrack - Baba Yetu
2 Points: Air Zonk (Game Rip) - Punk Cyborg Battle 1
1 Point: Namco Game Sound Express Vol.10 Cyber Sled - Be warped time

An overall solid week to get back into the swing. I didn't hate a single track.

value tart Aug 21, 2006 10:14 PM

Punk Cyborg Battle 1 - This chiptune is better than most, I have to say. It's got a great beat and plenty of ROCK'N. It reminds me of a cross between Final Fantasy and Gradius with its focus and great composition.

Baba Yetu - This is my nomination, and I nominated it because from the first time I heard it on the title screen of Civ IV I was captivated by it. I actually stopped just before the game would've started so I could listen to the entire thing. It, like Voyage (The Moon) before it, has a WONDERFUL SPECTACULAR layered melody that melts me like butter, and while the vocals aren't as technically proficient as other SotW tracks have had on them, they're used more as an instrument instead of the main driving thrust of the song, and that works to their advantage. I simply LOVE this song.

Desert - Blizzard can't make good music to save their fucking lives. End of story.

Duty vs. Passion - This is a bit of a non sequitur for me, because this sounds like something out of the Tales... games, but it's in Max Payne. A haunting melody with woodwinds on the lead... except it gets REALLY repetitive in the middle. :/

Be warped time = Hm. I'm not too sure what to say about this one. On the one hand it's rather listenable, but on the other hand... doesn't have much in the way of substance.

King Leo's Theme - Daaaaark... aaaaaangsty..... rooooooock. With piano. Basically sounds like just about every other SNK soundtrack that's been released in the past 5 or so years. :/

SLAUGHTER HOUR (AREA7) - Wow. This is... weird. And in a good way. Hooray for random voice clips! And it's a good thing the melody kicked in when it did, because I was about to write it off as weird but ambient, and my AMBIENT BIAS would've kicked in. This one actually switches itself up nicely and provides a pleasant listen. :O

The Last Dungeon - Whoa. There's a reason the chip squeaks when you go that high. DON'T TRY THOSE HIGH NOTES. :( Other than that, I really love the jazzy melody here. Interesting chiptune.

THE VOTES NOW.

3 points for Baba Yetu
2 points for SLAUGHTER HOUR (AREA7
1 point for Punky Cyborg Battle

Manny Biggz Aug 21, 2006 10:32 PM

- Air Zonk (Game Rip) - Punk Cyborg Battle 1 -

Overall a very nice, and catchy synth tune! Not much else to say about it really. Either way, no complaints is a good thing.

- Civilization IV Official Soundtrack - Baba Yetu -

I predict that this track will win. While it's not my favorite track here, I can accept it if it wins. It kinda makes me feel calm when I listen to it too... It just isn't a track I can casually put on and just listen to anytime. My enjoyment on the track seems to be based only on my mood. Either way, a very nice track!

- Diablo II Soundtrack - Desert -

Ugh, this game had TERRIBLE music. This track is no exception. NEXT!

- Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne (Game Rip) - Max's Choice - Duty Vs. Passion -

I'm not to fond of that constant sound effect going on through the song. Every other part of the song I like, I just wish that damn sound wasn't there... Decent track overall though.

- Namco Game Sound Express Vol.10 Cyber Sled - Be warped time -

It's pretty good, but it sorta just drags along for me. Not something I would listen to much at all...

- Neo Geo Battle Coliseum (Game Rip) - King Leo's Theme (Arranged Version) -

Ahhhhh FINALLY my nomination! I remember my first time ever fighting King Leo in this game. The match ended in 5 seconds with me getting my ass completely handed to me, but one thing stood out in that fight. (other than how damn godly of a character King Leo is) The music was catchy as hell! After fighting him a few more times, I learned to really appreciate this track. Then the game finally came out for PS2, and along with that the ripped soundtrack! This damn song keeps me in a constant state of head nodding. Great piano, and even better guitar! Some people might not be too fond of the guitar overpowering everything, but I personally love it! This song just does it all right for me. It's DYNAMITE!

- Raystorm - SLAUGHTER HOUR (AREA7) -

This track caught me completely off guard! It kinda hit me the same way Tricktrack from PSO hit me when I first listened to it. It certainly isn't as good as Tricktrack, but it's still a damn good song. This song nearly made me vote in favor of it over my nomination. I dunno what it is about this song, but I looped it 3 times already, and it's over 6 minutes long so that's gottay say something!

- Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (Sega Master System Game Rip) - The Last Dungeon -

Another track that just drones along without me caring about it much. Not my cup of tea...

~POINTS~

3 - Neo Geo Battle Coliseum (Game Rip) - King Leo's Theme (Arranged Version)

3 points - Baba Yetu - Hey, this song is classy. Great vocals.
1 point - Duty Vs. Passion - Decent track with an epic yet subdued sound.
1 point - King Leo's Theme - Fairly catchy tune, though the guitar riffs are pretty generic.

Double Post:
BTW the special week is next week yes?

That it is.

By the way, you've only given out 5 points rather than 6. =o

Eek, this is Mo0 posting. Forgot my sister was logged on.

Duck King Aug 23, 2006 12:22 PM

First time for me to participate in one of these. I'll be brief. Here goes.

Air Zonk (Game Rip) - Punk Cyborg Battle 1
I usually adore chiptunes, but this one was a bit over the top for me. I didn't like it much.

Civilization IV Official Soundtrack - Baba Yetu
Great vocals and I liked the percussions. The whole track flows smoothly from beginning to end.

Diablo II Soundtrack - Desert
More like ambient sound/background noise than a full-fledged vgm track.

Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne (Game Rip) - Max's Choice - Duty Vs. Passion
Average piece, not much variety in it.

Namco Game Sound Express Vol.10 Cyber Sled - Be warped time
Decent listen in addition to the cool synth. Though nothing that stands out.

Neo Geo Battle Coliseum (Game Rip) - King Leo's Theme (Arranged Version)
Riffs. Cool riffs. That pretty much sums it up.

Raystorm - SLAUGHTER HOUR (AREA7)
Stellar! Just the way I like it. Trances me each time I play it.

Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (Sega Master System Game Rip) - The Last Dungeon
This one has some nostalgia factored in. Nice track, though not the best, from a truly excellent game.

3 points: Raystorm - SLAUGHTER HOUR (AREA7)
2 points: Civilization IV Official Soundtrack - Baba Yetu

Drakken is on vacation, so I just realized now that the special week nominations never got in. I'm feeling too lazy to write out full infos for these, so I'm just going to copy-paste the top of the nomination queue:

Drakken: The Incredible Machine 2 (Red Book Audio) <Timothy Steven Clarke, Randy Dersham, Jan Paul Moorhead, Kenneth Rogers, Christopher Stevens> - [08] Techno Rave

Zaggart: Splinter Cell 3: Chaos Theory Soundtrack <Amon Tobin> - [02] Ruthless

Kanji: Age of Mythology Original Soundtrack <Stephen Rippy> - [03] Chocolate Outline

Shaolin Samurai: Maple Story (Game Rip) <Wizet> - Beachway

Elorin: Musashiden II: Blademaster Original Sound Track <Junya Nakano> - [2.12] Temple of the Ancients

Excrono: Genso Suikoden III Original Soundtrack <Michiru Yamane, Takashi Yoshida & Masahiko Kimura> - [2.28] Complex Thoughts

orion_mk3: Koudelka <Hiroki Kikuta> - [07] Kiss Twice

GoldfishX: Konami All-Stars 1993 ~ Music Station of Dreams <Konami Kukeiha Club> - [3.10] Dance With a Crocodile

Aardark Aug 23, 2006 05:27 PM

Baba Yetu is a clear winner. Reminds me of Mystic Ruin from Sonic Adventure, one of my top nominations in last year's BSC. The other songs are all decent or more-than-decent as well, but that one easily stands above them all. Man, I want to play CIV again now.

The one part in Punk Cyborg Battle 1 at 2:27-2:30 is awesome. Desert is a great ambient song. The Wonder Boy track is really nice, but not quite as catchy as the one in BSC. King Leo's Theme has a strong beginning, but the rest of the song is a little boring. Max's Choice - Duty Vs. Passion is the kind of track that I would normally like, but something is missing there. I think the tempo might be just a little too fast at some places.

Didn't care much for Be Warped Time and Slaughter Hour.

Okay, let's see…

3 points — Baba Yetu
2 points — Desert
1 point — The Last Dungeon

KyleDunamis Aug 23, 2006 06:05 PM

And now that the special week nominees have been announced, (The theme is "precussion") I'll say what my nom (which i regrettably thought of way too late) would've been: The victory theme from Tales of Legendia. Short as hell, but its as awesome as it is short.

(I'm not nominating this or anything, I thought of it, so I thought I'd just stick my 2 cents in)

TheKnightOfNee Aug 23, 2006 06:32 PM

3 points - Civilization IV Official Soundtrack - Baba Yetu - Seems like the clear winner this week. Everything's really well done in this.

2 points - Air Zonk (Game Rip) - Punk Cyborg Battle 1 - Much better than the other chiptune, which is way too high pitched for my liking. This one has a lot of variation, including that little staggered bit that sounds like triplets. I enjoyed it.

1 point - Namco Game Sound Express Vol.10 Cyber Sled - Be warped time - Have I heard this before? Or maybe it's because it just sounds a lot like some of the later Mega Man X tracks, only done a little better. I like the style in this and the samples used.

THE POWER OF WATER Aug 23, 2006 06:53 PM

Oh crap, forgot I had one more nomination from Draconis:

Zero Wing (Sega Genesis Game Rip) <Tatsuya Uemura, Toshiaki Tomizawa> - [05] New Day for Me (Stage 2: Legrous)

Because of the special week, this will have to come in on Week 67. :(

Excrono Aug 23, 2006 10:06 PM

A decent week overall. As usual, comments may/may not come later.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Aug 23, 2006 11:09 PM

I'm sensing a trend in the votes. Hell, I was going about my business at work today and caught myself singing Baba Yetu under my breath, and I wasn't even listening to my ipod or anything. That's an infectious track.

Dhsu Aug 24, 2006 12:04 AM

Wait, I'm pretty sure I nominated "Born to be Bone" for percussion week...what happened there?

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Aug 24, 2006 12:21 AM

Wasn't "Born to be Bone" also in the BSC? If so, then your nomination may have been removed to prevent duplication.

Otherwise, I can't explain it.

orion_mk3 Aug 24, 2006 01:07 AM

I had a track in both SoTW and the BSC, but that was a mistake on my part. Looking through the rules, there doesn't seem to be anything against that per se, though I suppose it's a matter of common sense.

I did notice that a fair number of SoTW alumni made it into the BSC though.

You'd have to ask Drakken. Maybe he already had eight songs when you made your pick, or maybe he just felt the tracks others picked were better.

Being in the BSC doesn't necessarily automatically disqualify a track in my mind, although I think it should certainly be taken into consideration. I think, in conjunction with the Gitaroo Man OST's popularity, the BSC nomination of Born to be Bone would've made it ineligible for SotW, even though it lost in the first round.

Dr. Uzuki Aug 24, 2006 04:20 AM

I know it's for the extra fantastic theme week, but are we all okay with a Musashiden II: Blademaster track appearing? For as many tracks that actually made it through to compete in the contest, there were twice as many nominated, it was probably the most nominated soundtrack out of them all.

Aardark Aug 24, 2006 05:54 AM

Here's my first nomination for Song of the Week:

Anachronox (PC) (2001) (Game rip) — (Will Nevins, Darren Walsh, Tony Diaz, Matthew Hembree, Kevin Geist, James Palmer, Ron Jones, Will Loconto) — Bricks (Jazzy Final)

No official soundtrack for this game has been released, and even the only game rip that I've found is kind-of shitty; oh well. I don't know who composed this track, but I've listed the people who have been credited as having worked on the game's music and sound. It would probably be hard to find the track, so I've uploaded it.

Djinova Aug 24, 2006 09:37 AM

I am pretty sure Bricks Jazzy Final has been in contest before, because I distinctly remember someone (orion?) didn't get the Jazzy Final part of the title.

Aardark Aug 24, 2006 10:06 AM

Really? I can't find it in the wiki or on the archive board. If someone can confirm that it really has participated before, I'll make a different nomination.

Yes, I remember the tune, and complaining that it wasn't very jazzy. I was psyched at the idea of an Anachronox song (it's a game I always wanted to play), but disappointed at the end result.

I wonder why it's missing from the wiki though?

Djinova Aug 24, 2006 11:09 AM

It's dated back to Week 46. The archive on the wiki starts from Week 48. I actually thought the whole history of SoTW was stored somewhere in the archives of Gamingforce, at least I think I once saw it there.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Aug 24, 2006 11:16 AM

But it didn't win, and no rule expressly forbids losing tracks from being nominated again. There's always been a nebulous code of honor thing against it, but as Aardark's never participated before, he understandably wouldn't know.

This said, I've no arguments with allowing Bricks (Jazzy Final) into SotW again. If anything, it'd be an interesting experiment to see what the occasional renomination can cause.

Of course, Aardark's allowed to change the nomination too.

orion_mk3 Aug 24, 2006 11:24 AM

I'd prefer if he didn't renominate Bricks, for simplicity's sake (though it is up to him--this sort of test can get the nebulous rules codified). Maybe another Anachronox track?

Elorin Aug 24, 2006 11:29 AM

Sorry Aardork, but I nominated Bricks Jazzy Final last time. While I think it's possible to nominate it again since it didn't place, I don't think it's encouraged since the song has had it's time to shine. Nominating other tracks from the game rip shouldn't be a problem, though.

The doctor has a point about Musashi. When I nominated "Temple of the Ancients" eons ago (most of my other nominees didn't make the cut) I was kind of worried, too, because of potential popularity issues. The soundtrack was kind of grey for me in terms of popularity. No objections at the time and BSC hadn't started so I didn't think too much about it.

Would a swap with Dhsu's nomination or KyleDunamis' potential nomination solve the problem (assuming they fit in with the rest of the line-up in terms of percussive merits)? Besides, I don't think anyone else will like "Temple of the Ancients." It's kind of ambient and minimalistic so...

In any case, here are my votes! Too tired to comment much but this week was really nice. It's also good to return back to SotW!

(2 points) Civilization IV Official Soundtrack - Baba Yetu

(2 points) Raystorm - SLAUGHTER HOUR (AREA7)

(2 points) Max Payne 2 - The Fall of Max Payne (Game Rip) - Max's Choice - Duty Vs. Passion

Much too hard to pick a clear winner this week; they're all too good.

Aardark Aug 24, 2006 11:35 AM

Okay guys, I see. I think I'll nominate a different Anachronox track then; I just have to decide which one.

TheKnightOfNee Aug 24, 2006 12:55 PM

Here, I've got a nomination. Just copy/pasting this info from the track I downloaded, so I hope it's all actually correct.

Thunder Force Sound Track -Lost Technology- <Hyakytaro Tukumo> - [12] Cyber Cave

mrman1 Aug 24, 2006 06:29 PM

Gotta update my nomination queue:

Blaster Master - Blasting Again
"Rush Boy -Theme from Roddy-"
Catalog Number KWCD-2002

(this same track is featured in XA format on the PS1 CD-ROM)

Golfdish from Hell Aug 24, 2006 09:51 PM

Have to make it quick this time around...Yeah, Baba's going to win and it's a hell of a song, but it's not quite good enough to top anything from Wonder Boy 3, especially not "Last Dungeon" (actually this was the first dungeon...The game starts off with the last dungeon from the previous game, which this is actually a remix of).

1st-Last (First?) Dungeon
2nd-Baba Yetu
3rd-Punk Cyborg Battle 1

Looking forward to rhythm week!

Chuckster Aug 25, 2006 12:45 AM

Good to be back folks. Very nice week.

(3 points) Civilization IV Official Soundtrack - Baba Yetu: Me and everyone else on the Baba Yetu bandwagon. Reminds me of Uncharted Waters Online - South African Ocean -- and that's a very good thing.

(2 points) Max Payne 2 - The Fall of Max Payne (Game Rip) - Max's Choice - Duty Vs. Passion: Shades of Metal Gear Solid, but the lead instrument adds its own spin. Murky, techno-ambient stuff.

(1 point) Namco GSE Vol.10 Cyber Sled - Be warped time: Impressive for 1994.

Dr. Uzuki Aug 25, 2006 04:08 AM

3 points - Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (Sega Master System Game Rip) - The Last Dungeon
2 points - Civilization IV Official Soundtrack - Baba Yetu

Nomination:

Album: Drag-On Dragoon Original Soundtrack Vol. 2
Artists: Takayuki Aihara, Nobuyoshi Sano
Title: Twelfth Chapter Sky
Track Number: 15
Year: 2003
MJCG-80137

Note 1 - This is not a nomination for Drag-On Dragoon 2 but for the less known second volume of the score for the first game.
Note 2 - Your ears are already raped just thinking about Twelfth Chapter Sky. At this point I don't have much of a track record to save, I am without inhibition.

Out of curiosity, how do 'special weeks' come about? This is the second one to come up since I got into Song of the Week, and it seems like planning for both whizzed by before I knew anything about them. Is it invitation-only?

Manny Biggz Aug 25, 2006 11:06 AM

Can I nominate now even though i'm at the bottom of the queue? If so then this is my next one:

Album: Kirby's Dreamland 2 (gamerip)
Title: King Dedede Battle
Source: Well I can upload it again if needed

Pretty much all I know about the song.

ikkei Aug 25, 2006 11:13 AM

As usually, I'm too lazy for making any comments. I' looking fordward to see that special week!

2 points - Punk Cyborg Battle 1

2 points - Last (First?) Dungeon

2 points - Baba Yetu

There is also a remake of "last dungeon" in Monster World III (or maybe IV) ;)

And my nomination (I'll upload it soon, but not now ^^U):

Album: Scarlett OST
Artists: nekoneko software
Title: Already settled down...
Track Number: 15
Year: 2006

Additional info: http://www.din.or.jp/~nekoneko/game.htm, this is the most recent game from the aka creators. Those chicks in the page look really hot, by the way!

The way this theme week worked was thus: Drakken had the idea and asked the powers that be if it were okay. When they said yes, he solicited participants from regular SoTW posters via PM.

I submitted a total of three tracks; two were rejected for being "not percussive enough."

Finally, the SoTW crew tinkered with the queue to place all theme week competitors in the same week. As far as I know, this was more or less the way things worked for the earlier theme week (Follin Week) too.

Aardark Aug 25, 2006 12:51 PM

I decided that I'll leave Anachronox for another week, so here's my new nomination:

Stronghold (PC) (2001) (game rip) — Under An Old Tree (Robert Euvino)

value tart Aug 25, 2006 05:53 PM

SonicPanda, to clarify, the theme weeks are created by 8 people deliberately withholding nominations and then all entering in at the exact same time, therefore all of their nominations are "new" and are put at the top of the list. This has been done before and probably will be done again just as long as it doesn't happen too often. And it actually can't, unless 16 people plan two back-to-back theme weeks.

Crash "Long-Winded Wrong Answer" Landon Aug 25, 2006 06:35 PM

Well, inasmuch as there seems to be a definite trend in the votes and, barring the most miraculous turnaround ever, it seems that the following remark is a loooooong time in the coming.

Congratulations, Mo0

KyleDunamis Aug 25, 2006 06:37 PM

I guess it's MoO's first #1? Congratulations. Now all I have to do is get a #1.... oh wait, MY getting one would be a sign of the apocalypse. :)

And I feel like changine my nom to something I nominated before but pulled in favor of something else.

Punk Cyborg Battle 1 is pretty cool. I enjoy the variety and energy that it has to offer. Probably one of the stronger tracks this week.

I have mixed feelings about Baba Yetu. On one hand, the melody is quite awesome. But then again, I'm finding it pretty hard to warm up to the vocals for some reason. It's not that I hate vocals either... I remember liking a few African vocal tracks from other games, but for some reason I'm having trouble enjoying these. The non-vocal portions are nice though. :)

I don't think Desert is nearly as bad as some wrote. It starts off a little bland and repetitive, but it develops into something enjoyable later on. The track also suits the nature of a desert well, in my opinion. I imagine that it works great in context.

Max's Choice - Duty vs. Passion is another decent track with a nice melody. However, it seems unremarkable when compared to other tracks this week. Dunno, I guess the melody is slightly weaker. Definitely not a bad track, though. :)

I have mixed feelings on Be warped time, too. It's a fairly interesting tune, but part of it comes off as trying too hard (not sure how else to describe it, roffel), and I get the feeling that I'd be annoyed if I listened to the track on repeat for a while. Not bad though.

King Leo's Theme (Arranged Version) is short and sweet. I wish that the track would do more or last longer somehow, but it's easy to appreciate it for what it is. Nothing totally impressive, but I enjoy it.

SLAUGHTER HOUR (AREA 7) doesn't sound very much like a slaughtering tune, lawl. Pretty enjoyable though; I enjoy the electronic style combined with a few, uh, softer elements. :x Since the main melody is portrayed in a smoother way, I find it easier to enjoy this track than I do to enjoy Be warped time.

The Last Dungeon is an awesome and catchy oldskool tune. The melody's even better than the other chiptune track this week (Punk Cyborg Battle 1), in my opinion. Definitely the best that the week has to offer, in my opinion. :o

3 Points ~ Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (Sega Master System Game Rip) - The Last Dungeon
2 Points ~ Air Zonk (Game Rip) - Punk Cyborg Battle 1
1 Point ~ Raystorm - SLAUGHTER HOUR (AREA7)

Granted, I should've been disqualified from nominating after that horrendous track from Street Fighter 3. ;_;

But...

FINALLY! <3

'Grats on the (presumed) win! Add to that the fact that, unless I'm mistaken, Mo0 also appears to have the highest margin of victory in SoTW history.

I do find it a little hard to beleive that such beauty could be nominated by the same soul who unleashed the gibbering madness of that Street Fighter track upon unsuspecting voters, yea, like the plagues of old :D

Manny Biggz Aug 25, 2006 10:06 PM

Which Street Fighter 3 track was it anyway? Was it a third strike track?

Darkcomet72 Aug 25, 2006 10:51 PM

Percussion week? Percussion week?!!

You all suck for leaving me in the dark. I totally would've nominated Spray from Chaos Field.

Yeah, sorry. I somehow missed you when sending out pms to the regulars awhile back. :-/

Well, Born to be Bone is too popular. As for others who nominated songs that didn't make it, it would be because I had received 8 better-fitting nominations.

What, someone said something about Musashiden II and not this? :(

As much as I would absolutely love to have our first-ever Kirby track, there's no way this can be obscure enough for SotW.

Didn't this week got "gained"?

1st: Raystorm - Slaughterhouse
My winner. The atmosphere for a shooter doesn't get much better than this. Very confident, bright and skyish with good percussion, melody and awesome drive and energy all around.

2nd: Diablo II - Desert
At first listening I thought I was playing the game and I was quite shocked. There's surely a lot of nostalgic power behind this track, but I also learned to appreciate the many musical nuances scattered around in the track. It sounds intricate, mysterious and much more. I have never heard a more interesting desert theme.

3rd: Max Pain.
To close up, I choose a somewhat somber and reflective theme. Nothing special really, but it still manages to get my attention.

... ok, my nomination:

Title: Dreamer
Album: Anno 1602 (Game Rip)
Composer: Markus Pitzer (a german guy), also known as Dreamweaver
Year: 1998
Comments: Anno 1602 is a real-time-strategy around 1500, where you have found America and now mine for resources to produce a vast army to slay your foes.

Yes. Chun-Li Stage -CHINA VOX mix1- from SF3: Third Strike.

Fair enough. Here's my new nomination then:

Album: Space Cowboy OST
Title: BGM 3018 (it doesn't exactly have a name -_-)
Source: It installs all the songs with the game, so I guess I can upload this one too.

Kaleb.G Aug 26, 2006 02:24 PM

Great week. All are winners.

3 points :: Raystorm - SLAUGHTER HOUR (AREA7)

1 point :: Air Zonk (Game Rip) - Punk Cyborg Battle 1

1 point :: Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (Sega Master System Game Rip) - The Last Dungeon

1 point :: Namco Game Sound Express Vol.10 Cyber Sled - Be warped time

I would have liked to give Air Zonk and Wonder Boy III more points (they tied for #2 in my personal ranking), but that would have robbed my nom of a 3-pointer, and I feel it very much deserves the amount I gave it. I'm going to have to track down those game rips now.

Cyber Sled was neck-and-neck with Neo Geo Battle Coliseum for spot #4, but eventually I had to go with Hosoe.

I don't mind that "Baba Yetu" will win. It's a good track; just not one of my favorites this week.

Track 15 is Twelfth Chapter Above Ground, not Twelfth Chapter Sky. I assume you meant to type "14" because you mentioned Twelfth Chapter Sky again by name in one of the postscripts, but I just want to make sure I've got the right track down for you.

I have the answer.

Uzuki's version is more awesome than all the others.

Case closed!

Djinova Aug 28, 2006 06:20 AM

My copy of Drag-On Dragoon resembles the one from Dr.Uzuki. It might not say much but my copy also has some front and back-cover scans. Looking more closely at the back-cover though, the tracklisting from Chudah's Corner and all those other sites seems to be correct.
Even though the scan is somewhat blurred, you still can see the kanji - and =, which respectively means "one" and "two" (so much chinese I know). It appears on track 7&8 and 12&13. Also the title of 19 is a bit longer, the "Exhausted" part would fit there.
Uzuki's track 12 - Tenth Chapter, Sky Above is actually Track 23 - Eleventh Chapter Sky (Unreleased) on the official CD. The track length 3:27 would match in any case (also some kanji resemblance prove this as well).
With that, I'd say we go after the official CD and say Chapter Twelve Sky is actually track 14, length 3:29.

Er, Percussion Week might be a delayed as "Temple of the Ancients" threatens to crumble to the ground and awaits a potential replacement. I think. Sorry for the wait.

Let's not be so hasty. I expressed a bit of concern but no one seems to have picked up that torch, it doesn't seem like that big of a deal.

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Aug 29, 2006 05:19 PM

Ok dudes, I'm not 100 percent sure how this all works, and I want you to tear me a new asshole if I get it wrong so I learn fast, but Mo0 tells me I can nominate a song. So here goes and such things. Copy/pastaing the format Uzuki was using.

Album: Riviera ~The Promised Land~ Full Arrange Soundtrack
Artists: Minako Adachi, Toshiaki Sakota
Title: The Angels Foretell Their Demise
Track Number: 30
Year: 2005
Cat. Number: BJCA-0018

We've got a replacement; I've just been really busy lately. I'm going to prepare the tracks tonight, and if orion's on, perhaps the thread will be up later. If not, it will be up tomorrow.

I went back and listened to that Chun Li song. Maaaan, that is just, um... ack. And it got worse as it went on. =(

Well, Baba Yetu deserved the win this week. Good work, MoO.

No, that's pretty much dead-on correct. Can't get much more correct than that.

And I've now been bumped into the week after the week after Percussion Week. Yay!!

It has to do with the nomination queue. As a past nominator, I have to wait until my turn arrives again. If people on this list higher than me nominate, my turn descends in priority.

However, new nominators, such as yourself, get executive priority; your name is automatically placed at the top of the queue and your nomination gets placed in the earliest accessible week.

Whoever has his or her name lowest on the "Next 8 Nominators" list gets bumped from that space and is made to wait until another week to see his nomination compete.

Here. This will explain the process fully.

I'm not mad or anything. It's just last night, I was remarking to CHz that it'd be a tiny bit annoying if one more person came along as a new nominator. I was at the top of the queue at the end of Week 64. Then the BSC came along and generated interest among some new blood. That's a very good thing, so I didn't mind getting bumped as some new nominations came in.

Then there is this week's "Percussion Week", which was a pre-planned onslaught of people who hadn't nominated in a while and had fallen off the queue altogether. Their special event bumped me into next week's SotW.

However, a ton of new nominators also came along, so that I was at the bottom of the Top 8. CHz noticed that it'd only take one more to push me out again, which was you. But fair is fair and your pick certainly takes precedence over mine.

I just think that this may be a SotW record of some type - "Most consecutive weeks in which a nominator has been bumped into the following week's queue."
