2006 College Football Season

The 2006 College Football season is going to be starting soon, so I'm going to start the thread devoted to it. Here are the two big rankings for college football the AP and the USA Today (both are for week one of the 2006 season):

------------

I like how Notre Dame is so high on both polls. #2 on the AP and tied for #3 on the USA Today poll. I'm sure people are going to say that Notre Dame is overrated and that they are that high because of who they are and not how good they are. But, I figure wait until the games start being played before criticizing Notre Dame and how high they have been ranked.

russ Aug 20, 2006 08:57 PM

My team, Auburn, is ranked 4 and 6, which is nice and all. A lot of people around here, Alabama and Auburn fans alike, are speculating that they will be playing in the National Championship game this year. Unfortunately I think these people are going to be disappointed. I expect that this is going to be a fun season once it gets started, and once players stop getting forcibly removed from teams due to various violations. Totally looking forward to it.

bighunt Aug 26, 2006 12:37 PM

OH NO!!!!! Auburn fans know how to use a computer??? lol... just kidding dude. i'm a UGA fan. I have family members who went there. i ususally go to 2-3 games/yesr "between the hedges".
Yes, i did go to the damn AU/UGA game last year. what a game! i can't believe Cox throw the bomb to the receiver. how the hell he'd get so open?? f-n dawg defense.
I predict a 9-2 season. We'll lose to Florida (again) and Auburn (again). Kenny Irons will run all over us. But Quentoin Moses will make Cox pay for not handing the ball off.

Trigunnerz Aug 28, 2006 08:48 PM

I wonder how USC will do this season. We lost two Heisman that are not easily replaced. Many key players have left.

Arkansas Razorbacks will show how versatile USC. Or not. But I have faith in my team and Pete Caroll.

Fight on! And fuck the Razorbacks.

BlueMikey Sep 2, 2006 11:31 AM

It seems like Arkansas is being vastly overrated right now just because people want to see them upset USC. Arkansas is going to come out looking very bad: I think USC is gonna walk all over them.

Good game on ESPN right now between Michigan and Vanderbilt. Michigan is up 7-0, but Vanderbilt doesn't look like it's just gonna roll over.

Other than my team's opener today (Arizona, BYU visiting), I'm quite excited about the Cal/Tennessee game. I want to see how Cal's back does at a place like Neyland.

Trigunnerz Sep 2, 2006 11:36 AM

IT'S GAME DAY MOTHERFUCKERS!!!

Finally!

Last year, we (Trojans) beat Arkansaw 70-17. Totally ass fucked. Most of Arkansaw's starting line ups are verterans. Our offense and defense are pretty much of new players. Also with a new quarterback, Booty, though he did play some games. But we will beat them again. Fight on!

You guys should also watch the Notre Dame game. I'm curious if they can live up to the hype.

BlueMikey Sep 2, 2006 11:39 AM

There is not a single team I hate more than Notre Dame. I don't even hate any other teams (other than our rival, ASU). Their situation is so absolutely ridiculous. I hope Georgia Tech beats the crap out of them (and I think they can, Notre Dame is always overrated by about 5-15 positions to start the season).

xman25 Sep 2, 2006 07:34 PM

UT won big today over North Texas 56-7. It was expected it would be a blow out.

xman25

Double Post:
At least Notre Dame scored a touchdown at the end of the first half. They are looking really rusty right now. I hope the touchdown gives them some momentum for the second half. Notre Dame doesn't look like the number 2 team in the country right now.

xman25

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Sep 2, 2006 09:05 PM

Brady Quinn's awareness has been really terrible so far. He's taking far to long to find an open receiver. Once he does find them, though, he isn't even very accurate. I really don't see him as being the top Heisman candidate this year.

xman25 Sep 2, 2006 09:38 PM

Yeah, I guess Brady doesn't have his "A-game" today. Notre Dame just scored a touchdown. I hope their defense doesn't screw up enough to blow the game. So far it doesn't look like there has been much of an improvment from last year. Georgia Tech hasn't scored more yet because of them stoping themselves more than Notre Dame is stoping them.

xman25

Lord Styphon Sep 2, 2006 10:03 PM

Based on the game played so far against Georgia Tech, can we start criticizing Notre Dame, saying that they're overrated and that they don't deserve to be ranked #2 and #3 now?

In other college football news, Colorado still sucks.

russ Sep 2, 2006 10:13 PM

GT took out Auburn in the opener last season; I wouldn't mind seeing them upset ND today. It's looking possible right now, with 10 minutes left in the game, ND up 14-10 and GT having the ball right now. Last year I got tired of hearing this announcer saying Reggie Ball this and Reggie Ball that. I think tonight I want to hear his name called a few more times.

If Tech can pull out the upset, and Auburn can beat Mississippi State next week {lol}, then Auburn would be ranked number 2 after next week's games, since Ohio State and Texas, both ranked ahead of Auburn, are playing each other.

Auburn looked pretty decent today, though slightly inconsistent. They settled for 4 straight field goals to open, then finally put one into the end zone and basically rolled.

Double Post:
Well it's basically over now. ND just has to kneel a time or two and head home.

xman25 Sep 2, 2006 10:38 PM

Yes, Notre Dame won!!!! 14-10. Gutsy call to go for it on fourth and one at mid-field with 1:10, but they made it. Even though I love Notre Dame, they really did NOT look like the number 2 team in the country. I think they'll be lucky to stay in the top 5. I think the announcers of the game are right, Notre Dame survived this game. The better get it's shit together if they want to stay in championship contention.

xman25

BlueMikey Sep 2, 2006 11:29 PM

It was nice to know that everyone overrated the crap out of Notre Dame.

It is not nice to know that the media and the fans will never learn.

I was glad to see USC blow out Arkansas. Slow start, but Booty looked terrific. USC's QB, who never played a meaningful down, looked quite a bit better than ol' Heisman hopeful Quinn.

Marshaun Lynch also looked very average against Tennessee. Interesting how many questions were answered so early on this season.

My team (Arizona) looks like crap against BYU right now. Sigh.

I'm really gearing up now for that Ohio State/Texas game next week. This ABC Saturday Night Football is programming genius. I'll start planning my Saturday's around it like people used to play their Monday's around the NFL. Great games every week.

Trigunnerz Sep 2, 2006 11:45 PM

Go Trojans!

Too bad it wasn't like last year where we beat them by over 50 points. Oh well. We scored 50 points so it's all good.

I was actually a bit nervous on how our team would do. Good to see we have yet again another solid team.

russ Sep 3, 2006 11:08 AM

While I am basically ambivalent towards Tennessee, and all of the other SEC teams besides Auburn, I absolutely love seeing SEC teams beat up on non-SEC teams, especially when it is a higher ranked non-SEC team. Sorry Cal, but you can't compete with the SEC powerhouses like the Tennessees, Floridas, Auburns, Georgias, and LSUs. With Texas and Ohio State playing next weekend, that will open the door for an SEC team to step up and make a run at the national title game.

TheKnightOfNee Sep 3, 2006 12:01 PM

I'm a Michigan State fan. They beat Idaho, but it wasn't a convincing victory by any means. Hopefully they can get things together better, otherwise I don't see them having a great year. =(

Amen brotha! Realistically, I don't think UGA can make a title run, but they can certainly make it back to the SEC championship game. As i said before , they'll lose to FLA and maybe Auburn this year.

Big game this Saturday, #1 Ohio State vs. #2 Texas. Should be a great game. I'm surprised Notre Dame is still in the top 5.

xman25

BlueMikey Sep 5, 2006 11:03 PM

I'm not too surprised to see Notre Dame still there, overrated pricks.

Notre Dame got 5 more 1st place votes in the AP poll than USC, who also went on the road to the deep south and completely blew out the team they were playing. How did anyone put Notre Dame as #1 over Ohio State or Texas? Are they fucking insane?

This also shows what's wrong with the polls: Florida State only got a 1 or 2 place bonus for beating Miami. How can the coaches say that Florida State's performance (beating a Top 15 team on the road) was only 1 spot better than Oklahoma's (barely squeaking out a win over UAB)?

And West Virginia. I mean, they're good, and with Louisville's RB out for the rest of the year, they'll walk over the Big East. But getting first place votes is laughable. They'll be in the BCS, they may even be undefeated, but they don't have a murder's row of a schedule to go through like Florida and Auburn. Ohio State or Texas will knock out one of those from the possibility of the top spot next week, USC and Notre Dame will do the same later.

Usually I don't get all worked up over this until bowl season. I hate how the NCAA ruins what could be the best sport over an entire season by giving it such a weak finale.

BlueMikey Sep 9, 2006 11:03 AM

Welp, here we go, week #2.

The big game, of course, is Ohio State/Texas. I'm liking Texas in this game, mostly because it's in Austin. I think it's going to be nice and close, though, should be a really great game.

Penn State at Notre Dame...I think ND will win, even though I really, really hope PSU knocks them off. ND is overrated, but I never go into a season believing in Penn State anymore.

All of us here in Tucson are hoping for the upset over LSU but...eh, wah. We'll lose by 3 TDs probably.

russ Sep 9, 2006 02:31 PM

Auburn has shut out Mississippi State 34 to nothing, and while Auburn played well, they didn't play like a team that I can expect to contend for the championship this year. On a positive note, however, their kicker hit a 55 yard field goal today.

I expect OSU/Texas to end 42-28 OSU; and I am hoping for a Penn State win over Notre Dame.

And yeah, don't hold your breath on Arizona upsetting LSU, it's going to be uglier than the Cal/Tennessee game.

bighunt Sep 9, 2006 02:49 PM

SEC game of the week: UGA vs USC (South Carolina). yes, spurrier's coaching, but he doesn't have the quality of players at SC that he did at UF. However, given the home field advantage and the fact that it's a night game, SC will keep it close. keep an eye on SC receiver Sidney Rice (#4). he's a top tier WR and a definite game breaker. Look for Paul Oliver to cover him. UGA's All-American DE Quentin Moses will have a field day against SC's O-line.

Georgia 21 - SC 17
(Game at 7:45 ESPN)

BlueMikey Sep 9, 2006 04:34 PM

Man, Notre Dame looks good today. Brady Quinn looks like the real deal. Their defense is as good as it was last week.

I hate this. :\

russ Sep 9, 2006 05:57 PM

If you're watching the Arizona-LSU game you might want to change the channel.

BlueMikey Sep 9, 2006 07:00 PM

Yeah this is rough.

I actually stopped watching it for a while to see the end of that Iowa/Syracuse game. Holy cow! Syracuse had 6 golden chances to tie the game from the 1-yard line and Iowa stopped them. Amazing.

It sounded like the end of the Clemson/BC game was good too, but stupid ABC went to their dumb post-game show rather than showing the other OT game still going on.

russ Sep 9, 2006 07:10 PM

Yeah, I was watching the BC game and talk about a clutch extra point block there, man that was awesome. I didn't get to see the Iowa game though. OSU-Texas time now. Also noticing that Troy State is leading Florida State in the third, and Air Force is tied with Tennessee at 10 in the second.

xman25 Sep 9, 2006 07:39 PM

I feel better about Notre Dame now. They beat number 19 Penn State 41-17. It sould have been 41-3 but Notre Dame's defense got lazy in the fourth quarter. After last week's game and the game today it looks like Notre Dame's defense is better than last year.

xman25

BlueMikey Sep 9, 2006 09:59 PM

OSU has looked really, really good in this game. Texas is obviously hampered by the suspensions and by having a completely new QB. Texas's performance is still good enough to play with 95% of teams in the NCAA, but it really shows you that Texas isn't a part of this year's national championship race.

It is unfortunate we don't have a playoff, because the way that the SEC has looked this year, there are a couple of teams who could win it all, but the tough conference means it will be almost impossible for everyone to escape without a loss. The Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10, and Big East don't really have more than one team that looks like a contender.

I'm kinda surprised with the USA Today poll. Penn State completely dropping out of the rankings and USC #2. Weird.

BlueMikey Sep 10, 2006 10:10 PM

It's almost like the BCS has screwed everything up so much that people don't even know what the hell they are voting for anymore.

Huge, huge games next week. Michigan visits Notre Dame, Miami goes to Louisville, LSU at Auburn, Oklahoma at Oregon, Clemson at Florida State (tough loss at BC vs. almost lost to TROY), Texas Tech and TCU, Nebraska and USC, Florida and Tennessee.

I can't remember there ever being this many ranked teams playing each other this early in the year.

bighunt Sep 11, 2006 01:58 PM

TOP 10 BABY!!!!!!!! look out UAB!!!

how 'bout Stafford's performance?? not bad for a true feshman against a tough SEC defense. yeah, he had 3 INTs, but Georgia's D was a stough to crack as ever. looks like the #1 QB, Tereshinski is out 6 weeks w/a sprained ankle. He's got 3 games until the Vols come to town. by that time, his decision-making will improve and the QB of the future will finally arrive.

Good lord what an ending to the Auburn-LSU game. 7-3 Auburn victory, LSU gets the ball inside their own 20 with 1:18 left and they take it all the way down to the Auburn 3 as it ends. Number 3 Auburn defeats number 6 LSU. I don't really see how USC is supposed to hurdle Auburn, what with them playing a 19th ranked Nebraska.

Ryuu Sep 16, 2006 06:19 PM

Auburn...

Horrible, horrible call. Pass interference all over the play.

Still a fun game to watch though, definitely down to the wire and defensive throughout.

BlueMikey Sep 16, 2006 06:43 PM

Has been a fun day so far. That LSU/Auburn game was great (if not screwed up a bit by the refs), it's always fun to see Notre Dame get blown out, and we still have some great games tonight. Plus, how great would that be to be a fun of Boston College, going to two double OT games in a row?

LSU got screwed by the call at the end, and could have had a much easier time scoring had they been 15 yards closer. The refs definitely blew the call. It's unfortunate that the national championship race is set up in a way that LSU has basically no chance at all of getting into the championship game, even if they win out. With a playoff, a great team like LSU would have a chance.

xman25 Sep 16, 2006 08:09 PM

Man, Notre Dame played like shit today. They deserved to lose by as much as they did. I hope they pull themselves together for next week.

xman25

russ Sep 16, 2006 08:36 PM

Well the receiver got hit at about the same time as the ball was tipped AND the ball was tipped well ahead of where the receiver was, so it wasn't really that horrible a call. I think the logic of their decision on that play is that they are treating the deflection the same as a ball that is tipped at the line of scrimmage. Yeah, it sucks that a questionable call had to happen on such an important play, but that's the way it goes sometimes.

Also I am watching the Tennessee-Florida game and on two consecutive plays touchdowns were called back on penalties. First Florida has an 89 yard punt return called back on a tough block in the back call, and then Tennessee has an interception return called back on a tough roughing the passer call. Wow.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Sep 16, 2006 10:16 PM

Brady Quinn has to be the most overrated player in the entire NCAA. He holds the ball in the pocket for far too long, and he's not even very accurate when he does get rid of it. And Jeff Samardzija should stick to baseball. He may have had a good year last year, but he looked horrible today. For the season he only has something like 100 yards.

BlueMikey Sep 16, 2006 10:44 PM

Switching between ND and LSU, it was making me wonder the entire game why Brady Quinn gets so much attention when you have a guy like JaMarcus Russell who was completely tearing it up.

Anyone catch the end of that Oregon/OU game? Holy cow. Oregon got a TD, a recovered on-side (followed by a TD) and a blocked FG as time expired to win the game. Great, great stuff. Could go down as the finish of the year.

How is Notre Dame still #2? I was expecting either Auburn or USC to be #2.

Notre Dame was still #2 because the new polls weren't up yet. This has since changed, with Auburn now #2, Notre Dame falling to #12, and Miami falling out of the top 25 entirely.

That'll teach them to not stomp on Louisville's cardinal.

Under the radar as usual, the Bulldogs are coming. Stupid f-n Vols can't stop the Gators??? thanks for the help Tenn!!!!! jackasses.....
Oh well, bring on the Colorado Buffs!
Auburn did look good, almost scary good, but i do think that was pass interference.

TheKnightOfNee Sep 19, 2006 11:30 AM

Well, now that we know Notre Dame isn't some unstoppable force in the world of college football, I'm looking forward to the matchup this weekend when Notre Dame comes here to play Michigan State. MSU beat Notre Dame last year, hopefully they can pull it off again this year.

russ Sep 23, 2006 08:12 PM

Not a lot of big matchups this week, but a couple of interesting games going. Georgia survived a scare against Colorado, scoring 14 in the fourth quarter after pulling the freshman starting quarterback Stafford. Penn State was keeping it close with Ohio State until throwing a pair of late interceptions that were returned for touchdowns. Auburn, playing lowly Buffalo, didn't play several of their better players and squeaked out the 38-7 win. And the end of the Alabama-Arkansas game was just amazing, in a pathetic sort of way. Choose your criticism on this one. Tie game in the fourth quarter and Alabama driving the ball down the field but once they get inside Arkansas' 30, they play it ultra-conservative, playing for the field goal instead of the touchdown. The get as close as a 1st and goal at the 10, but end up with a 14 play, 9 minute drive that ends with a missed field goal. Fast forward to overtime and after Arkansas throws an interception on the opening possession of the OT, Alabama plays it ultra-conservative AGAIN and plays for the field goal, which in this situation is not necessarily a bad idea, since a field goal would win the game. Well, surprise surprise, their kicker misses his 3rd field goal of the game, wide right each time. Time to go to the second overtime. Finally Alabama decides to try to put the ball in the end zone, and they are successful. But wait, they have to kick an extra point. The kicker misses the extra point, wide right. This sets up Arkansas to score a touchdown and kick the extra point to come away with the win. Their blue chipper freshman quarterback, Mitch Mustain, looked horrible late in the game. He had the deer in headlights look in his eyes, which is understandable considering this time last year he was a high school quarterback. Well, he actually stepped it up and put it in the end zone. Extra point good, Arkansas wins, Alabama's kicker is crying on the sideline.

Meanwhile, Notre Dame is playing Michigan State and gave up a quick 17 points before finding their way into the end zone. Florida just scored a touchdown at the end of the first half to go up 12-7 on Kentucky, who hasn't looked too bad today. Florida has had two extra points blocked tonight, which is never good. We'll see how it plays out.

xman25 Sep 23, 2006 10:01 PM

Notre Dame is playing bad again. I thought that they would get their shit together for this week's game, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

BlueMikey Sep 23, 2006 10:28 PM

Damn. Well, Arizona gave USC hell. Almost held Southern Cal under 20 points for the first time in 5 years. The tackling just fell apart at the end of the game and a big injury led to a very late TD (muffed punt by a backup returner) at a point where Arizona still had a fighting chance.

I'll take a 3-0 halftime against USC at this point. Arizona's gonna be good next year, I think. I think we're looking at a bowl game this year, too, if we keep playin' like this.

Nothing else major today (so far). It looks like Boston College's magic finally ran out with a last minute TD from NC State.

Double Post:
Gah, and there goes Notre Dame. Poor Michigan State.

russ Sep 23, 2006 10:31 PM

Notre Dame has just scored three touchdowns in like 6 minutes to take the lead. Wow, just wow. Quinn looked a whole lot better the last two drives, and then the defense steps it up and returns a pick for a touchdown for the 3 point lead.

TheKnightOfNee Sep 23, 2006 10:42 PM

You know, some weeks I really hate being an MSU fan.

russ Sep 23, 2006 10:44 PM

Like when ND comes up with a seriously ridiculous interception with 24 seconds left to end the game.

TheKnightOfNee Sep 23, 2006 10:50 PM

Like when Michigan State throws away one or two 20 point leads each season. They blew it at Michigan and lost in overtime two years ago, they lost at Ohio State last year, and now they did it against Notre Dame this year. The one thing you can always count on them to do is throw away a huge lead when they're getting a big upset.

And what the hell at that Notre Dame interception. That shouldn't even happen.

xman25 Sep 23, 2006 10:52 PM

HOLY SHIT!!!!!!! Notre Dame won 40-37!!!! I thought they were done for. I prayed to God that Notre Dame would make a come back and they did. I'm serious. Thank God for miracles. This will probably be the only miracle Notre Dame gets all season.

Maybe that's what Notre Dame is overrated: pollsters trying to get on God's good side.

No, seriously. I wouldn't be shocked at all to see Notre Dame back in the top 5 after needing a complete miracle against yet another Big-10 team that scored at least 37 points on them just to squeak by in the last few minutes. Hell, even Idaho was only down a touchdown to Michigan State on the road with 9 minutes left.

xman25 Sep 24, 2006 01:44 AM

If Notre Dame were to win the national championship would people still say that Notre Dame is overrated? I'll grant everyone that a number two ranking was a bit high, but I think that no matter how well Notre Dame does there will always be people who say that Notre Dame is overrated. There seems to be people who hate the fact that the school exists or that they have a football team. I have a deep hate for the Yankees, but that doesn't change the fact that they have done alright for themselves over the years.

xman25

BlueMikey Sep 24, 2006 12:00 PM

How would Notre Dame even get to the national championship? There is no way they are in the Top 2; there is no way they even deserve to be in the Top 10 after the last two weeks, but because they began soooooo overrated, they will likely sneak back in. See, if Notre Dame had begun the season around #15th (like they probably should be) they'd be ranked about #20th in this coming poll, which is pretty close to accurate after stinking up the joint two weeks in a row.

For example, Notre Dame will be ranked probably at least 4 places higher than Clemson. Clemson's one loss came to a team in the Top 25 (or just outside of it), on the road, in overtime, from a blocked extra point. Clemson also went on the road and completely blew out Florida State.

Notre Dame, on the other hand, nearly got beat at Georgia Tech, at Michigan State, and completely got blown out at home by Michigan. Notre Dame's one good win, at home against Penn State, looked good until Penn State showed that they aren't any good at all and have no offense.

The difference between Notre Dame and the Yankees is that the MLB championship isn't decided by votes or a crazy computer system, but wins and losses in a fair system followed by a playoff. Notre Dame gets special clauses written into the BCS system just for them that gives them a special advantage that no other team enjoys. Votes are a huge, huge portion of the national championship, and the fact that people who are voting have bias (and not just for ND, the coaches vote for their own teams and conferences, like when Mack Brown completely fucked over Cal), means that the system cannot be fair.

I will stop hoping for Notre Dame to fail when they have to play by the same rules as everyone else.

I would like to see those clauses. I won't believe them until I see them. The Yankees, how many times, by how many preseason publication, over the past few years were the Yankees picked to win the World Series? Answer: a lot. They were picked to win because they are the almighty Yankees. They had the most good players and the highest salery. 2001 through 2005 they have not won a single World Series and yet each year they are picked to win the World Series. I think it would be safe to say that the Yankees are sooo overrated at the start of each season, well at least the 2001 through 2005 seasons, I don't know how this year is going to turn out.

The best thing to happen to Notre Dame this weekend would be to walk out of Colorado Springs with a win against Air Force. The second-best thing to happen to them would be walk out of Colorado Springs with a loss to Air Force.

In fact, if Notre Dame could pick a game it had to lose this season, that game would be Air Force.

That's because of a little-known clause built into the Bowl Championship Series contract commonly referred to as the "Notre Dame" clause. Or, more appropriately, the "Notre Dame is special and you're not" clause.

The way the BCS works is that the winners of the six major conferences — ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10 and SEC — automatically advance to one of the four biggest bowls, where the payout per team is $10 million. The other two teams are usually at-large selections, and to be eligible for an at-large selection, a school must be ranked in the top 12 of the final BCS standings.

There's also wording built into the BCS contract that says any team which finishes in the top six but doesn't win their conference automatically earns an at-large selection. And here's where a shrewd Notre Dame administrator stepped in.

If a team from outside one of the six major conferences finishes in the top six, like Air Force, for example, they still get a free ride into a BCS bowl. And if that happens, and if Notre Dame has nine wins or finishes in the top 12 of the final BCS standings, the Irish are automatically in, too.

That's a load of ifs that have to happen. But the whole "Notre Dame" clause is basically a load in itself.

And that brings us back to Saturday's game against Air Force. A Notre Dame win will undoubtedly help them. A Notre Dame loss will turn every Irish fan into a Falcons fans. Because if Air Force finishes in the top six, and Notre Dame manages to win just three of its five remaining games, the Irish get to sneak into the BCS through the back door.

If you're a Notre Dame fan, you love this fine print. If you're not, then you've got one more reason to boycott NBC on Saturdays.

Admittedly, the chance of such a scenario developing seems highly unlikely. Air Force has to run the table and count on top teams in the six major conferences to start losing badly if it wants to crack the top six.

The fact that such a chance exists is ridiculous. And the only thing that benefits from such an arrangement is Notre Dame's coffers.

Sure, Notre Dame can creep in even with one loss, but they still have to face a pair of ranked teams in Florida State and USC. And Boston College isn't a guaranteed win, either. But the Irish could conceivably lose two of those games — finishing the season with a mighty .750 winning percentage — and qualify for a bowl game.

If that happens, Tyrone Willingham will be the first loser. For a man who pushes his team to win every game, every Saturday, getting into a BCS bowl with three losses would be a slap in the face. He'd have to field questions about whether Notre Dame really deserved the slot. And deep down inside, he might wonder if his team deserved the bid, too.

Notre Dame would lose next. For the players who spent the entire season restoring prestige to a long-dormant football program, they'd watch it slip away as soon as the Irish signed a contract to play in a BCS bowl. Then again, the players are on scholarship, so one more free ride might not hurt them that much.

Finally, college football loses yet again. No. 1 Miami and No. 3 Virginia Tech are slated to play each other the final game of the season in a game that will probably determine the Big East champion. Whoever loses will have the privilege of playing in a second-tier bowl on New Year's Day and will get back to their hotels in time to watch Notre Dame play in a BCS bowl.

Granted, a Vegas bookie would love the odds against such a scenario developing. A lot has to happen before Notre Dame gets its special clause invoked and more deserving schools watch their bids get revoked. And with a win Saturday, the Irish can put the whole debate to rest, sending the Notre Dame clause back into the corner with alien sightings, Kennedy rumors and other conspiracy theories.

But if they lose, watch for the Irish to start paying closer attention to a military school in the Rocky Mountains.

Many laughed at the possibility of Notre Dame and Air Force playing each other with perfect records on the line. Imagine what they'll do if Notre Dame gets into the BCS by holding onto Air Force's jet.

Even if it is a few years old, I'd think a Notre Dame source would qualify as acceptable for you?

Well Notre Dame is "special" just like the Yankees. Anyway, the clause is another good reason to get rid of the BCS and the way college football decides who is the champion each season. Get rid of the bowl games and put in some kind of playoff system. Don't all (or most) of the other college sports have some kind of playoff system. One thing, if I am reading the article right, the clause only comes into play if Notre Dame wins nine games and/or if they are high enough in the BCS standings. If Notre Dame doesn't win enough, you people don't have anything to worry about. 2001 through 2006 Notre Dame has played in a BCS game twice, the Fiesta Bowl each time. 1/1/2001 against Oregon State and 1/2/2006 against Ohio State. They lost both. I'm wondering, can anyone complain about Notre Dame's schedule?

A DIFFERENT KIND OF POLL (from USATODAY.com, dated 8/31/06)

The USA TODAY coaches preseason poll reconfigured by strength of non-conference schedule. The Jeff Sagarin preseason rankings were used to find an average ranking for non-conference games. Teams play as few as three and as many as five non-conference opponents. Notre Dame's ranking is based on all 12 games since it is independent:

Rank, team (poll spot) Avg. rating of opponents
1. Southern California (t-3) 30
2. Notre Dame (t-3) 41.75
3. Ohio State (1) 49.25
3. Oregon (20) 54.7
5. Tennessee (23) 58.5
6. California (12) 60.3
7. Iowa (17) 65.75

Notre Dame always seems to have a really tough schedule. I agree that the clause is stupid, but so is the BCS system and the bowl games. A playoff system is needed. About my Yankees statement, I wasn't saying that the opinions of writers helped the Yankees get into the playoffs, I was saying how overrated the Yankees have been the last few years. On paper the Yankees always look great, but on the field they havn't lived up to their potential during the past few years.

Letter to the UGA football team:

Dear sirs,
What the FUCK were you doing for 3 quarters on Saturday??? you want to make me shit my pants against COLORADO????? before saturday's game, they were ranked 115th OVERALL in OFFENSE!!!! where was the stingy "D" that i'm so used to????? Consider yourselves lucky!!!! thanks to Joe Cox coming off the bench, he single-handedly kept you undefeated headed to Oxford, Miss.
PLEASE do not overlook any opponents no matter they have!!!! take NOTHING for granted.
I do feel bad for Mississippi this weekend. Coach Richt will tear you a new one this week and all the anger and pain you'll build up will be felt by the Miss football team.

Thanks for you time!

PS
Cox's 2nd TD was a beauty though!!! don't know if Stafford would have made that nice touch. (now we'll have a QB controversy.... shit.)

BlueMikey Sep 25, 2006 03:44 PM

Notre Dame's schedule strength right now, after Saturday's games, is #1, but, there are a few things we need to look at when arriving at that:

1) Schedule strength matters little until near the end of the season. The body of work is very small, so the accuracy of schedule strength is also very small. Only 16 teams are being taken into account when factoring it. And, as Sagarin says, the first few weeks are so unpredicable that starting ranks are taken into account as well.

2) 2-2 Penn State's computer ranking is flawed because of this same notion. They have the #4 schedule strength, but have looked awful and will be ranked in the computer top 30 until their body of work finally gets some influence over their schedule. Which inflates ND's rankings (this logic is part of the reason why Ken Pomeroy's own rankings are so much better than the RPI in college basketball).

3) This isn't something that is a knock against ND, but computer rankings and the BCS: Jeff Sagarin says that his best predictor cannot be used in the BCS because it takes into account score margin (as does his usual rankings, which aren't a predictor but a rating of past success). ND's ranking in the BCS formula is #7, ranking in the ratings is #14, and ranking in the predicted standings is #24.

That's not much to say, but I'd say the closest ranking to how Notre Dame has ACTUALLY played is probaly the #24. It would be easy to pick out #23 teams that would have a better than even chance of beating Notre Dame on a neutral field. It speaks more to the unnatural inflation of Notre Dame by voters, which is another signal that the BCS is bad, ND's special treatment is bad, voters are bad, and computers are bad.

Lock a committee in a room on Dec. 5th and have them add 2 teams to the 6 BCS conference winners and set seeds for a playoff. Works in basketball. And no special treatment for ND. If they want an automatic berth, they can join a conference and win it, just like everyone else.

The problem would still exist.

See, the conference winners of the BCS conferences would be guaranteed a spot (as they should be), and Notre Dame would still whine and complain about how they should be guaranteed a spot above all else. Perhaps ND would get an automatic spot if they finished in the top 6 of the rankings, while teams from any other conference would have to finish in the top 4.

Here's the thing.

Notre Dame's clause trumps all other clauses after BCS champions. And Notre Dame's clause gives them an advantage: they can be lower than another team in the rankings and guaranteed the spot! The bowl wouldn't even have the option of taking the team that is ranked higher. You're telling us that it has to do with Notre Dame winning enough, but the "enough" part is the issue here.

xman25 Sep 30, 2006 05:43 PM

Well, Notre Dame beat Purdue 35-21. The final line for the game was Notre Dame to win by 14 and they did win by 14. The team looked better this week than they did last week. More consistent. Notre Dame has Stanford next week.

OK....... now i'm worried. Ole Miss isn't a bad team, but definitely not top tier. For Georgia to win 14-9 is a travesty. i'm going to the Tenn game this saturday night in Athens and i'm really worried now. if UGA plays the way they've played the past 2 weeks, they'll lose. the run defense stinks and the offense is inconsistant at best. Fortunately, Lumpkin is looking good at the right time, so i'm sure he'll get the start Saturday night (ESPN 7:45pm)

When does the BCS ranking come out? I thought it was like the 5th week of the season or something.

BlueMikey Oct 4, 2006 03:23 PM

Hey! I made it onto Sports Illustrated's website in the college football section!

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...mailbag/1.html

Quote:

It looks like Tucson's love affair with Mike Stoops is coming to an end. Seeing someone like Tyrone Willingham rebuild Washington in a little over a year while Arizona is still stinking it up 2 1/2 years after Stoops took over has Wildcats fans sounding like they did in the Mackovic years. Any chance that Arizona turns it around? Any chance that Mike Stoops keeps his job?
--Mike, Tucson, Ariz.

Coach Stoops, this isn't you, is it? The beginning of his e-mail address does say "bluemikey."

Without question, Arizona has been one of the biggest disappointments so far. After the promise QB Willie Tuitiama showed as a freshman and with the recruiting success Stoops has had the past couple years, I really thought this was the season when the Wildcats would turn the corner. But no, they're pretty much awful, ranking 86th nationally in total defense and 109th in total offense. I don't think Stoops is in any danger of losing his job before next season -- he did step into a massive rebuilding situation due to the colossal disaster that was the short-lived Mackovic era -- but he definitely needs to make some changes, starting first and foremost with his offense.

It's into year three, and the Wildcats are still completely inept offensively, even more so than the past two years. Part of that, of course, is they're missing star tailback Mike Bell and are inexperienced on the line, but much of the blame falls on coordinator Mike Canales' shoulders. Arizona simply has no offensive identity. The defense, despite what the statistics indicate, isn't that bad. 'Zona held high-flying BYU to 13 points and USC to 20. But when your offense is incapable of producing first downs, it's inevitable that your defense is going to wear down and give up big plays. The Wildcats have the talent to still win a few games in the Pac-10, but they have to get some semblance of production from their offense, because you can't count on 16-13 wins in the Pac-10.

Huge upset today with unranked Arkansas beat number two Auburn 27-10. Auburn was a 15 point favorite. Notre Dame won over Stanford 31-10.

I didn't expect Auburn to go undefeated this year, I just haven't been nearly as impressed with them as so many other people seemed to have been, but I so didn't expect them to lose to Arkansas. I expected them to be able to rattle the freshman quarterback Mustain, but it really didn't matter since Arkansas ran the ball something like 30 out of their 32 last plays. McFadden, Felix Jones, and the Arkansas offensive line basically dominated the game.

Trigunnerz Oct 7, 2006 08:12 PM

Wow. Auburn lost. And USC barely won. Nevertheless, this will probably mean USC will be #2 now.

Bye bye Auburn. *cough*overrated*cough*

If I remember, we beat Arkansas 50-14.

I wonder how the BCS ranking is going to be like. Isn't it coming out this week or something?

Did you see the game UF had against LSU?? the second half, they pretty much dominated them. it doesn't hurt to ahve a few turnovers go your way as well.

I watched the game while tailgating at the UGA/UT game. now, as a devoted UGA fan, i can't support Florida, but with their schedule the way it is, there is no doubt that they should be #2. USC??? come on man, look at the conference!!! hands down, and most analysts will say the same thing, the SEC is the best conference in football. UF still has to play Auburn saturday night in AU and UGA Halloween weekend. if they escape, which i hope they don't, they'll be #2 definitely and parhaps get a few #1 votes as well.

I'll keep this short about the UGA game: I knew we were underdogs going into the game (2.5) and i even took that bet, so i did win money. however, it was very fun as always, above average first half (except for the UT td before half). it's funny b/c that game was the reciprocal of the way they've played all year. For the first games of the season, their D was stauch and tghe offense poor. it was the opposaite this time. it's the 2nd time EVER Georgia gave up 50+ points. YES, they're overrated so this defeat didn't surprise me, but it did disappoint me.
The Punt return and Kickoff return were so exciting!! if any of you watched it, you know how loud it was. it was freakin crazy!
i'm hoping for a 9-3 season. i expect us to lose to UF and Auburn. as long at we beat Geogia Tech, and get a good bowl, i'm happy.

Overall, college football live is WAYYYYY better than NFl live and i've been to at leat 6 games of college and NFL. If you have the chance to see a Division I-A team live, don't hesitate. from the tailgating, the HOT babes (of the SEC), the non-stop alcohol, it doesn't get much better than that.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO AUBURN BEAT FLORIDA. TIME TO WAVE THE BIG ORANGE AND BLUE AU FLAGS.

Where was this last week against Arkansas? Huge huge win for Auburn, and a huge loss for Florida. And what's up Georgia fans, Vandy stepping up today.

Yeah, some big upsets today. Number 11 Aubern beat number 2 Florida 27-17. Unranked Indiana beat number 15 Iowa 31-28. Unranked Vanderbilt beat number 16 Georgia 24-22. And unranked Texas A&M beat number 19 Missouri 25-19.

This is all i'll say about UGA: we're so terrible. i expected us to lose last weekend to UT, but this is unbelieveable and UNACCEPTABLE. for the D to let VANDY drive down the field w/2:30 left is uncalled for. totally overrated. that is all. plus, we COULD lose to Mississippi State next week. jesus h.....

Too bad my wish for an earthquake in Auburn didn't come true last night. kill 2 birds w/1 stone. f-k em both.

For those who haven't had the debatable pleasure. Since Miami was involved, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. Even if FIU started it this time.

The color commentator sounded like he was more enthusiastic about it than some of the players.

Good one. Even if UGA still has the inside at winning the #5 spot on the Bottom 10 this week, they're not bad enough that Mississippi State should give them a challenge.

Speaking of rankings, with Florida losing, I have to wonder if the polls will finally move USC up to #2, or if they'll move Michigan past them. I personally think Michigan should get it, but enough of the voters may think differently.

Damn. 2 points. I can't believe this happened. Our team played great 4rth quarter. But we were down too many points to make a rally. I wasn't expecting USC to be undefeated, but to an unranked team?

At least USC is above Cal and Notre Dame. At this rate, we'll definitely go to one of the four bowl games.

USC has to win against Cal before it can start thinking of playing (probably) Michigan, and this year, they may not even do that. Not to mention, being 8th in the BCS standings doesn't guarantee them anything, since Boise State seems well on its way to qualifying, and the top three ACC teams are all ranked below USC at present.

On the plus side, I hear the weather in San Diego is wonderful.

Of course, the BCS is going to get shaken up tonight anyway.

Some big upsets this week: on Thursday #15 Rutgers beat #3 Louisville 28-25, today unranked Georgia beat #5 Auburn 37-15, and unranked Arizona beat #8 California 24-20. This helps Notre Dame. They're ranked #9 in the BCS. The beat Air Force 39-17. Though, Notre Dame is lucky that Air Force didn't score more points, Notre Dame gave up 405 yards on defense. Notre Dame better step up its defense big time if it wants to have a chance to beat USC in the last game of the season. #6 Florida escaped defeat at the hands of South Carolina. They won 17-16 by blocking a last second field goal attempt by S. Carolina.

So some crazy shit happened this week. Now we're (USC) ranked #3. An actual chance at the championship game. And this week is Ohio v Michigan game, meaning one of those teams is going to drop in ranking, which probably means it will push USC to #2. That is considering we beat Cal, which I'm confident since it's a home game.

For the most part. I'm a Michigan State student/fan. The team was looking good until they blew it against Notre Dame, then Illinois got their first conference win in a couple years against us, and it's just gone downhill from there. Add to that, two of our top rivals are both strutting around with undefeated records, and it makes this college football season a very dismal one around here.

Trigunnerz Nov 19, 2006 01:44 PM

It looks like Ohio and Michigan are having a rematch at the championship. Bah.

We're guaranteed the Rose Bowl now.

Is there any chance that USC can be bumped up to #2? Or is it too late?

I'd laugh if the National Championship game goes between Michigan and Ohio State, and Michigan pulls out a win in that game. Of course, I'd also love to see those two teams in the national championship game more than any others. It was a close game between the two of them anyways, so a rematch could go either way.

Plainsman Nov 22, 2006 01:14 PM

It won't happen. USC is going to win their last two and that will get them the nod over Michigan.

In my opinion, if you don't win your conference you shouldn't be playing for a national championship. Tough for Michigan, but that's the way it should be.

Good to see another Auburn fan on here, Russ. I felt the same way, this team was over-rated by the media because of Kenny Irons and what happened in 2004. We were an above average team that had to fight and scrape to get everything we got. Looking back, the wins over LSU and Florida are pretty amazing considering. The 2004 Auburn team would have beaten this team by 3-4 touchdowns.

Trigunnerz Nov 25, 2006 12:14 AM

USC v Notre Dame! What a great game tomorrow will be! Tomorrow's game will determine whether or not we're going to the Pasadena or Glendale, AZ. One of college's greatest rivalries.

Fight on! And beat the Irish!

I am going to get retarded now!

xman25 Nov 25, 2006 08:45 PM

USC just scored it's second touchdown of the first quarter. As much as I hate to say this, I think Notre Dame is going to lose. I just hope Notre Dame doesn't embarass itself.

Goodbye Brady Quinn! Hello Glendale, Arizona!

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Nov 26, 2006 02:18 AM

Is Trigunnerz really grating, or is it just me? I mean, it's not like I'm pissed Notre Dame lost or anything, he just annoys me. Weird.

xman25 Nov 26, 2006 03:57 AM

I'm leaning toward grating. Maybe 'sore winner' applies. I don't know how Notre Dame got "fucked over" as Trigunnerz so eloquently put it. Were there some bad calls by the officials that I missed? Anyway, I hope Notre Dame stays in the top eight in the BCS poll so that they can go to a BCS Bowl game. They were number five in the poll coming into the game, but losing by 20 points is going to hurt.

xman25

Trigunnerz Nov 26, 2006 01:53 PM

My bad. It's a huge rivalry game you know. I think a little trash talking is allowed. =)

But ya, doesn't Notre Dame need to be in the top 8 to be guaranteed a bowl game? I guess Brady Quinn's Heisman candidacy got blown to pieces. You think Troy Smith will get it now?

xman25 Nov 26, 2006 05:01 PM

From what I understand if Notre Dame is in the top eight they are guaranteed a BCS game.

I'm hoping Notre Dame gets a BCS nod anyway, despite not having it by default. They're good enough with their 2 or 3 amazing theatrical plays per game to make a real spectacle. Don't know if it'll happen, though - there'll probably have to be some shaking up at the top of the pile again next week if they're gonna have much of a chance.

In other news, I think BYU got shafted in the rankings again. Not by much - our schedule hasn't warranted too much in terms of rankings, but we've done pretty well, we're running on an 8 or 9 game winning streak (I can't remember which), and John Beck is one of the highest ranked quarterbacks in the nation. We swept our conference (not too horribly hard, but TCU and Utah have both had decent seasons), and yet we play the 4th or 5th ranked PAC-10 team in the Las Vegas Bowl. Oh, well. The end of the BYU-Utah game was beyond classic, at least. Can't beat an ending like that.

Crossing my fingers for a Michigan - OSU rematch!

Arainach Dec 2, 2006 10:50 PM

BEST Scenario: Wolverines get to go to the championship game, but their plane crashes, killing all aboard.

Second Best Scenario: The BCS Computers bump Florida up to #2.

BlueMikey Dec 2, 2006 11:03 PM

Florida convinced me tonight that they belong in the championship. Michigan may be better, but they couldn't win their conference, Florida did. If Michigan was a lot better, sure, but Florida is just behind, if at all.

Big East championship going to overtime, should be a fun finish.

Haha, ESPN was panning the crowd and they showed for a few seconds a kid wearing a shirt that said "West Fuckin' Virginia" pretty prominently.

Arainach Dec 2, 2006 11:32 PM

BlueMikey, they couldn't win their conference because the National Champ is in their conference. And they only lost to them by 3 points. On the road.

Wait, why am I defending the school that I hate with all my soul?

BlueMikey Dec 2, 2006 11:44 PM

Yeah, but that's the thing. They did lose to them. In their last game even. If we already know that Michigan can't beat OSU, then we don't need to see it again.

(Yes, the margin was 3 points, but in the 4th quarter, Michigan didn't really have much of a chance. Just a 3-and-out when they had a chance to take the lead.)

I'd actually bet that Michigan beats OSU if they play again. I think Michigan is a better team and wins on the neutral field.

BlueMikey Dec 3, 2006 12:14 AM

Possibly. But let's say the game was at Michigan and Michigan won by 3. Would OSU deserve another shot then? I mean, we can guess at a lot of things in college football, but, at the end of the day, if you don't win your conference, you shouldn't get to play in the championship (or you should have to go through a playoff system like we should have).

Triple overtime, great game to watch. Shame for Rutgers, but great job by West Virginia this season.

FUCK! I can't believe we lost to UCLA. ;AKDSJ;ALDKFJA;LKJE Our defense did well, but our offense just sucked. We turned over the ball way too many times.

At least we're going to the Rose Bowl. Off to Pasadena again.

LOL. Touché. But UCLA was a rivalry game, and all rivalry games end up crazy. It hurts to lose to them. I have no idea what happened at Oregon though.

YES!!!! Notre Dame got a BCS game. The Sugar Bowl against LSU.

BlueMikey Dec 3, 2006 11:30 PM

I know you're an Irish fan and all, but have you watched LSU at all? LSU is going to absolutely destroy Notre Dame. ND would have been much better off if Michigan had gotten in, forcing LSU to play in the Rose Bowl and setting up Notre Dame with a team it has a chance against, like Boise State or Oklahoma.

LSU destroying Notre Dame isn't going to make people happy that Notre Dame got picked over Auburn and Wisconsin. If anything, it could hurt ND the next time talks come up about ND's role in the entire system.

Kirschwasser Dec 4, 2006 12:29 AM

Out of the BCS matchups USC v Michigan seems to the most interesting to me. The rest of them look to be fairly one sided, although I could be wrong.

DragoonKain Dec 4, 2006 04:30 AM

I'm mad they picked Florida because I think the game will be a snooze fest and as a fan I want to watch the best game possible. Florida will get killed.

Drex Dec 4, 2006 11:17 AM

At least Urban Meyer is mildly revolutionary in how he runs things. He might be able to pull some fast ones on OSU before getting his butt kicked. I would honestly be very surprised if Florida put up very much of a fight.

Personally, I think half the rankings are a joke - everyone at the top of the pile is based on their last few weeks' performance, while everyone in the rankings but after, say, 9 or 10 is based on overall performance. Pick one and be consistent.

On the plus side, many of the BCS matchups should be interesting. Notre Dame might be outmatched against LSU, but they should at least put up a fight, as they always do. Michigan-USC should be an ace game. I'm definitely hunkering down with chips and popcorn for that one.

You know, Jim Tressel would be the first to tell you to not be so certain about things like that; Ohio State won their last national championship against a Miami team that was supposed to rape the Buckeyes like everyone here is saying the Buckeyes will Florida.

Seriously, it's not like this Florida team backed into the championship like Oklahoma did its last two trips.

Drex Dec 4, 2006 12:11 PM

Well, like I said - I would be surprised. It's not that it's not possible for Florida to put up a fight - they're a very good team with some incredible coaching, and they've put down a lot of good teams and silenced a lot of critics. It's just that at last appearance, Ohio State was firing so well on all cylinders and generally just dominating in most areas of the game, if they're up to their par performance I think Florida would be hard-pressed to stop them. It would surprise me.

Obviously there're a lot of things at work going into a national championship game (or any bowl game, really) that could affect - adversely or otherwise - either team. A long period of time away from real gameplay, possible sicknesses or injuries, simple psyching out, new strategies and plays, intense scrutiny of recordings of the opposing team, etc. We might see two completely different teams on the field in January.

ND didn't really get picked over Auburn or Wisconsin. There's a clause that only two teams from each conference can go to a BCS game, so Auburn and Wisconsin were eliminated by the fact that they were third choice in each conference.

As an Auburn fan, I hate that we "disappointed" this year at 10-2. However, we did beat #2 and #4 in the final BCS standings, so that stands for something.:kitsune:

BlueMikey Dec 5, 2006 01:10 AM

Oh yeah, I always forget about that rule. That means the next team down in the rankings would be West Virginia (Arkansas would be ineligible too), and it could be a toss up between them and ND.

Plainsman Dec 5, 2006 02:56 AM

BUT, even if that rule didn't exist, I'd bet money that ND would still get in over Auburn and Wisconsin just do to interest and fan support.

Drex Dec 22, 2006 11:47 AM

Yay for TCU dismantling Northern Illinois and BYU destroying Oregon! The commentary and anything spoken by the referees were fantastically awful. I don't know how many times the referee said that a penalty applied to the wrong team, or announced the wrong down. And the announcers weren't much better, calling the Oregon quarterback Brady Quinn and slipping up all over the place. It kinda fit the game at the time, though, because the first quarter was patchy at best. Cleared up right nice by the beginning of the second quarter, though.

I find it offensive that an undefeated-in-conference, 9-game winning streak, 10-2 BYU team got put up with the number 5 Pac-10, 4-game losing streak, 7-5 Oregon team. It didn't really let BYU shine (or fall on its face), but it did make us look good when we picked Oregon apart most of the game. Feel kinda sorry for Gary Crowton, though. We made a fool out of him.

Slash Dec 31, 2006 03:02 PM

Sun Bowl

(24 or 25) Oregon State defeats MIZZ 39-38.

OSU had probably one of the most amazing and unbelievable comebacks ever. At the start of the 4th Missouri was ahead 38 to 24 and at 7 mins, OSU strikes with a touchdown. then in the last 2 mins or so, OSU gets another touchdown then a 2 point conversion.

I swear, Missouri was all energetic and bouncing up and down before the touchdown and afterwards...they were like dead.

Slash Jan 1, 2007 07:39 PM

Start of 4th Quarter Rose Bowl

USC - 19
MICH - 3

USC with two huge touchdowns in the third quarter and a field goal.

Drex Jan 2, 2007 01:04 AM

Holy Boise State! Big score for the underdogs, huge statement for the introduction of a playoff system to division I football. I'm so glad I stayed up and watched the whole thing, because the last few minutes and the overtime were incredible. They'll be showing those highlights for a while.

Was very disappointed by the USC-Mich game. I expected more out of Michigan, but they never were able to figure USC out. USC kept running the same basic defense, and they just never adjusted.

Trigunnerz Jan 2, 2007 01:50 AM

Hell yeah! Just got back from the Rose Bowl! W00t! The UCLA game was just a fluke. I think this game proves that USC still has it and will probably mean we'll be #1 when the season begins again.

And Boise State! Oh shit man. I wished I could have watched that game. The last play was some crazy trick play conversion.

Drex Jan 2, 2007 02:04 AM

I have no doubt in my mind that USC will deserve to be atop the preseason rankings, yeah.

We thought for sure the last BSU play in regulation (the pass-lateral-run in) would be the play of the day on ESPN, but the fake play option with the quarterback running weak side and having his teammate (I can't remember who it was who took the snap) passing into the endzone was brilliant, and then the pass fake and handing off the ball behind the back with the left hand for the 2-point conversion...after playing straight-up football for the first 59 minutes, it was fantastic. On each play, you really had to see the replays to catch just how well put-together they were.

BlueMikey Jan 2, 2007 02:15 AM

The Fiesta Bowl is the best game I have ever seen. I mean, it isn't even close. There were like 15 spectacular moments within about 20 minutes. I just saw the highlights again on SportsCenter and I couldn't help but laugh, it was just great.

Drex Jan 2, 2007 02:19 AM

I just read the recap; 22 points in the final 86 seconds of regulation? Preposterous.

Dopefish Jan 2, 2007 01:36 PM

Needs more playoffs. Boise State deserves a shot at the championship, even if Ohio State wins.

Slash Jan 2, 2007 02:13 PM

For all the Bowl Games I've seen these are how im ranking them

Fiesta Bowl
Sun Bowl
Rose Bowl

nazpyro Jan 2, 2007 05:09 PM

Fiesta Bowl. Yes, one of the most amazing spectacles in sports I have ever witnessed. I didn't get to see if from the start though. A friend IM'd me and told me to watch that shit, so I watched that shit and was amazed.

I haven't got the chance to check video highlights though. Gotta check that when I get home.

Slash Jan 2, 2007 05:17 PM

The Fiesta Bowl was the sickest set of plays I've ever seen.

Now the sun bowl, OSU did great with two strong drives in the last 7 minutes of the game to gain 15 points and ultimately the win, but with BSU's behind the back left hand pass to get the two point conversion in OT was incredible.

IdleChill Jan 2, 2007 11:59 PM

Doesn't pay to watch the Sugar Bowl. :blowout:

Come on,

NOTRE DAME?

BlueMikey Jan 3, 2007 01:26 AM

Just in case anyone missed it or wants to relive it:

YouTube Video

I still can't stop getting a chuckle or a smile on half these plays, I'm still amazed at what I saw.

Dopefish Jan 3, 2007 01:36 AM

I'm currently downloading (very slowly) a torrent of the Fiesta Bowl. It's 2GB so hopefully it's a good quality.

IdleChill Jan 4, 2007 12:14 AM

ND: 14
LSU: 41

duh

Dopefish Jan 4, 2007 12:20 AM

I hope Charlie Weis is happy with his career move.

Drex Jan 4, 2007 02:18 AM

That was a very disappointing game of football. I gave up shortly after the 3rd quarter started and went back to playing FFXII. To think I gave up a road trip to watch it. :(

russ Jan 8, 2007 11:58 PM

Being an Auburn fan, I don't really care for Florida too much. HOWEVER, when it comes to choosing between rooting for an SEC team that I don't like and rooting for a non-SEC team in the National Championship game, it is a really easy choice: SEC all the way. Talking about the game this afternoon with a coworker, I mentioned a couple of reasons why I thought Florida had a legitimate shot at winning this game, 1) with all the time between games, the coaching staff would be able to put together a solid game plan to combat OSU, and 2) OSU doesn't get to see defenses with the kind of speed all over the field that Florida features.

This is why SEC football is the best football in the nation.

Dopefish Jan 9, 2007 01:04 AM

Another college football season over, another situation arises where the BCS looks stupid for its rankings and selection process. How much longer will college football be without a playoff? Boise State must be bullshit, thanks to Florida slaughtering the Buckeyes tonight.

There, is that better?

nazpyro Jan 9, 2007 02:06 AM

Man, it wasn't even close. The start was quite exciting though. But then THE Ohio State University couldn't do shit. I was kinda cheering for Florida anyway, but I didn't really care. College football done.

blue Jan 9, 2007 03:10 AM

Um, go Florida. The entire city got tanked. ...And this is probably the only post I will ever make in the sports forums. :)

(But man, winning the basketball championship and the football championship, one right after the other? It's a shame the school is being wasted on non-spirited students like me.)

IdleChill Jan 9, 2007 05:34 AM

Of course the SEC is the best conference, duh.

Ah haha I agree with pretty much every single thing you've said. I never thought of myself as a "spirited" student, but the athletics department, I must say, really earns the good rep for this season. I just hope they'll shut up about it eventually. To me, as a Fine Arts/Liberal Arts major (and we know how those schools are doing financially...-_-lll), the attention and overshadowing that the Athletics department gets/does over just about everything else even slightly commendable about the university is just darn stupid.

It's interesting how annoyingly unifying sports is. I never cared much for football, but mid-season (and thanks to one of my new roommates), I found myself caught in the excitement that built up in the city throughout the season and even watching a few games. Football, to me, is still an uninteresting sport, but I felt the slightest twinge of school pride for the first time ever last night when UF won. It'll go away soon enough. Go Gators for the time being and all. whee...

Rachel joy Jan 9, 2007 01:01 PM

i have to say florida totally shocked me. all the bowl games shocked me actually..... all the big teams choked. Even tho they sucked it up i'm still with Notre Dame

Florida just rocked everything I knew and loved by winning both the Basketball Championship and the Football Championship.

I have to give them props though, I though Ohio State would just take it easily, but Florida just took it to them and beat them.

russ Jan 9, 2007 10:40 PM

Pretty nice how Auburn beat two of the top three teams in the nation this year, including the National Champs, but wilted against Georgia.

Drex Jan 10, 2007 11:34 PM

That was worse football than the Notre Dame game. What a letdown. I was watching with a die-hard Ohio State fan, too, so that was even better. Plus Urban Meyer is not well-loved in my neck of the woods, having coached the University of Utah over us for a while. Oh, well. Now that the season's over I can start turning to college basketball again.

Oh and go BYU! ^_^
