I'm not ashamed!

Someone made a thread like this some time ago. Maybe that fuck Musharraf. The point is, what are some things you enjoy, mainly mainstream I expect, that are generally frowned down upon by the types of people that come to Gamingforce/this type of place?

I´ll start this fucker off. I listen to Linkin Park and I fucking ENJOY it. So what?

*Takes hat off*

I also like Harry Potter books, nearing a point of obsession. SO WHAT I ASK YOU!? I WANT TO KNOW WHO R.A.B. IS, I WANT RON TO SMASH ON HERMIONE. I want Snape to PAY even if deep down he´s a good guy. SO WHAT?

When I first went to prison I checked some recent donations in the library and found some Harry Potter books and decided to read them because of boredom and they seemed lighthearted enough to ease my grief. Now look at me. I know that isn´t a decent excuse for many of you, and though I´m slightly wasted I ask you, SO WHAT?

Anyhow, what do you do or like that most people here would ridicule you for?

Double Post:
Yeah, eighteen views and no one posts. You people need to put this shit on the table. Stop fucking around.

Weapon Aug 16, 2006 05:17 PM

Does having a MySpace page count?

TheReverend Aug 16, 2006 05:22 PM

These two... Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson.

Yeah I know, but what can you do when you like their music? As they say, why lie?

Ummm, I'm gonna put this in 'cause around these boards it is kind of taboo because of sooooo many who seem against this: I actually think that properly lived and fully believed Christianity is great for the individual and society.

Oh, and I like to chew my fingernails... Bizzaap!

Summonmaster Aug 16, 2006 05:23 PM

Yeah I do enjoy MySpace as well, simply because it gave me a sad excuse to list lots of stuff I've wanted to store somewhere, even if no one reads it. Gamefaqs also falls in the same "generally loathed internet site" category, because when you find a good faq, it's damn useful.

I didn't think I'd get ridiculed for liking the Harry Potter series but I do like it as well. Amply full of magical concepts and being able to hook readers woldwide only helps.

Rakka Aug 16, 2006 05:40 PM

I actually kind of like Green Day...even American Idiot, even if they are about as mainstream as a band can get, and even if they are supposed to be sellouts, whatever that means.

Wearing an American Idiot T-shirt into a music store and buying a Bjork CD can get some interesting looks from the employees, by the way.

Actually, now that I think of it, liking Bjork is probably more likely to earn me ridicule than listening to Green Day, isn't it?

Gechmir Aug 16, 2006 05:41 PM

I listen to Country music. Shit, I live in Texas. Practically comes with the territory. Folks on the internet will look at me odd just for enjoying the genre.

Locally, folks seem to have an odd taste for "Texas Country" singers, or so they call themselves. Cross Canadian Ragweed, Jack Ingram, Pat Green... They all suck. No steel guitar which is the damn SIGNATURE INSTRUMENT of Texas Country. And they sing about acid and weed, which really is NOT in the true spirit of country music. They suck at instruments and all since with overly raspy voices in an effort to sound "cool" as opposed to vocally gifted.

Look no further than "King" George Strait for true Texas country music.

janus zeal Aug 16, 2006 05:46 PM

I like green day, linkin park, and anime music. you have no idea how much a person gets mocked for those things. (well, some of you do im sure)

Dude. What are you talking about? Harry Potter is cool.

Um..something mainstream,...
well. I have a myspace, but I don't particularly care for it. How about this? Shakira. I think she's awesome!. I like Linkin Park too.

And unlike many people I know, I don't think the Beatles are all that cool(don't get too mad people!).

Mortuary Aug 16, 2006 06:08 PM

People make fun of me because I listen to Grindcore and Goregrind. They say that the music and lyrics are pure crap.

Whatever.

Myspace is the main thing I would probably get made fun of for having. I like the Harry Potter books, too (I've gone to the midnight releases for the last two books..). I also like some chick flicks. Not all, mind you, but I'm a fan of movies like Coyote Ugly and Where The Heart Is. I'm a girl, though, so I'm allowed to like girl movies.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Aug 16, 2006 08:12 PM

Probably the Harry Potter books, too. I love the damned things, even if I get ridiculed for reading them. I've had to have gone through the series six or seven times, and I still find new things each time I make a new pass. It may not be the best writing of all-time, but J.K. Rowling knows how to make an entertaining read for a wide range of ages.

acid Aug 16, 2006 08:42 PM

I like Disney more than any straight man should. I absolutely adore it (well, pretty much anything before the Lion King. After that it gets sketchy). Disneyworld is my most favourite place on the planet, and I'd go every year if I could afford it.

I love everything there is to love about the 80s. Music, movies, games, everything. Hair metal and synth pop kick ass. 90s pop too.

eveerrryboodddy. yeah ah. rock your booddddyy.

I couldn't resist....

I also like Linkin Park, and people at work tend to make fun of me. WAH. I like my anime and video game music, too--probably because it's orchestral for the most part.

But, the kicker is: I LIKE bagpipe music! That's what I said. I like bagpipe music.

I also don't participate in fart jokes. They're NOT funny.

QFT. Though Disney World is a fun place to be, it's so fucking crowded. But it's still awesome.

I like a lot of mainstream music (all forms of rock, rap/hip-hop, reggae, r&b, pop, christian, electronic, crunk, and some country too!) and probably listen to just as much as i do of soundtracks, video game music, orchestral stuffs, and j-pop.

There's also quite a few "reality tv" shows I end up watching.

You're damn right. It's exactly the point of Grindcore.

I just didn't express my thought the right way. They say that you can't hear the lyrics and that they mean nothing at all.

But that is also the point of Grindcore in itself so...

Anyway, I try not to speak too much about music with my friends because I tend to get mad really fast with them on that subject hahaha!

Liking Alizée and Sowelu. Both foreign pop singers whom fit the definition of "pop" perfectly. As in, they make Britney Spears look like rock n roll (well, Britney is in a different genre of music "slutpop"... neither Alizée or Sowelu are slutty/whorish). I don't like BS.

Everything else is quite openly accepted by my friends, Harry Potter, all the other types of music, online gaming, one-night stands. ^_^

I actually made a "music you are embarassed to like" thread in the media centre right after the most recent crash, but I like this more as it has a larger scope.

I like listening to Dido Armstrong while doing construction jobs. Recently I was tearing a bathroom apart with a sledgehammer, and my boss'es husband came to the room and almost touched the boombox. NEVER mess with my boombox when I have a sledgehammer. I think Dido is freakin great; up there with Frank Zappa, Public Enemy, Primus, and Slayer.

Bagpipes are one of the best instruments ever. My friend Crazy Amy is a global competitor (never made #1 world champion) for bagpipe competitions, and I love it when I get a chance to hear her play. I don't know if bagpipe players, or bagpipe groupies in my case, are dorks or what, but whatever. I'll admit to it.

Speedskating is better than hockey. Both longtrack and shorttrack.

I probably got more skeletons in my closet, but that is good for now.

Chie Aug 17, 2006 09:29 AM

I am actually surprised that no one has tried creating a myspace thread since so many of us have it. I have no shame in myspace page though since I'm not obsessed.
I also like evanescence, linkin park, and some adam sandler movies ~_~

munchkin13 Aug 17, 2006 09:55 AM

My name is alanna and I adore Disney everysingle film, every cartoon and every piece of merchandise. If I could afford it I would buy everything disney i could get my hands on lol i'm an addict :)

Acro-nym Aug 17, 2006 10:45 AM

My like of Winnie-the-Pooh stories fits into this category, preferably the A. A. Milne stuff. My collection of Pokémon cards probably fits as well. That's all I've got for now. Maybe I'll think of something else later...

Adara Aug 17, 2006 11:08 AM

Some things people have mentioned already: I've read through the Harry Potter series several times (I hate the movies, though), I like Linkin Park and Green Day, and I have a MySpace page.

My own dirty secrets: I listen to boy band music, the Spice Girls, and some of my favorite songs from the '90s when I'm feeling nostalgic. I'm super covert about it, too, so that no one I know (even my family) will find out and make fun of me for it.

I enjoy Christopher Paolini's books Eragon and Eldest. I've heard people put them down because they read like they're written by a teenager (which they were) and because they are clichéd and slightly predictable. They're not great, but I still enjoy them.

I watch old movies like Labyrinth, The Princess Bride, Hook, and Disney movies when I'm feeling down. I guess this one's not too bad, but I'm slightly embarrassed that I still do this.

I liked Final Fantasy VII. In fact, it is one of my favorite games of all time.

This one's a bit different, but I'm also a Christian. From what I've gathered about the beliefs of some GFF members, I think that many people around here would ridicule me for that.

Bernard Black Aug 17, 2006 05:32 PM

The only things I can think of are Harry Potter and myspace. I'm pretty sure there's a lot of other stuff that I should be ashamed of but it doesn't register because I love them so much.

I like Harry Potter. I love JPOP. I took japanese I and II. I like math!!! <3 I'm in a long distance relationship and have been for a year and a half and it's still going strong. I want college to start NOW (I'm nervous but hey I kinda miss school)

EDIT- I miss RayRay and I like PBJ sandwhiches.

Manny Biggz Aug 17, 2006 09:17 PM

I LOVE MOST of those Disney teen shows! Kim Possible, Phil of the Future, and the Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Here's a memorable scene from that last show:

*Zack and Cody in the park, and after a few mishaps a park worker walks up to them and asks*

Park Worker: "Hey kids! Do you enjoy playing in the park!?"

Both of them: "YEAH!"

Park Worker: "WELL TOO BAD! We're shutting it down!"

*laughter ensues*

The Emporer's New Groove is also one of my top fav movies of all time.

SOJC Aug 17, 2006 10:02 PM

I love Maths, and I like Physics...Maths is the God of all subjects...

I want to go back to college :(.

DN's List of External-Viewed-Shame-Things Complete with[list ] coding =p :
  • I have a Myspace Page (But its bare bones, the most I might add is a streaming song (Which I have but its defaulted off) and a background.
  • I like mainstream music (Which on here seems to be a cardinal sin), and many varieties at that, including opposites
  • I still like FFVII, perhaps due to nostalgia
  • 20yr old Virgin
  • Only now am I starting to play Vagrant Story and FFTactics.
  • I know too much stuff about too much stuff and sometimes I'll reveal some fact that get looks from people: :raiseyebrow:

You guys would seriously be surprised how many of my acquaintances think I'm the fruitiest motherfucker they know because I watch anime. I mean, to these so-called "hard" motherfuckers cartoons are not manly and therefore it must mean that emasculation by animation is imminent.

Man, FUCK YOU. I like Samurai Champloo and Twin Spica. If you still think I'm gay, I'll be more than happy to fuck your girlfriend for you and prove you wrong.

Sorry, that just made me laugh out loud.

I will add that to my list: I like anime, even the more romantic kind (Ah! My Goddess being the Primary example) or the kind meant for a general audience (Generally any Hayao Miyazaki film), or even Dragon Ball Z (Which is to Anime nerds the worst shit ever, but awesome to regular folks, so inverse effect on that particlar series). This carries over to Manga, with titles like Peach Girl, Yotsuba, and Dance Till Tomorrow (Which could be mistaken for an H Title >_> ).

Dee Aug 18, 2006 03:36 AM

I encounter the same problem with anime, unfortunately. People automatically label me as an outcast who likes cartoons. And having a desktop of anime is prone for dormroom laughter. :(

I also sometimes like "popular" music. I used to like Linkin Park too.

agreatguy6 Aug 18, 2006 08:39 PM

Awwwwww!
Look!
It's a free thinker named Fatt!

isn't it great?

I actually have a preference NOT to like Anime and Manga as much as everyone else. It's ok.
Prefer it to a REAL novel, but they still aren't always as complicated.

J.K. Aug 18, 2006 09:10 PM

I also like Linkin Park, like a good bit of you have seemed to mention.
I enjoy listening to J-pop and J-rock, K-pop and K-rock. Old Motown, Alternative(back when it was actually alternative...)Metal, Some R&B, Bit o' Jazz, easy listening and all that good stuff.

I actually enjoyed watching Sailor Moon, and by that I mean the original Japanese version, not the badly-translated and edited-all-to-hell crap that DIC was responsible for...Though before I started watching the original, the dub sufficed, of course.

I'm still mildly interested in Power Rangers(Well mostly interested in how in the hell that has gone on for 14+ seasons...and more in the works...)

Thats about it for now lol

daguuy Aug 18, 2006 10:26 PM

i like dragonforce. they're not my favorite band but still dgoo. some people like them but people often bash'em for it. i also like alot of reality TV shows. i don't like the beatles. i also hate linux. sure it's stable and can do alot of stuff but if it needs so much command line to get good use out of it i may as well just use DOS or one of those text-based OSs

Krelian Aug 18, 2006 10:46 PM

I enjoy FFVIII, which seems to be often touted as by far the worst in the series.

I also don't mind crappy low-production-value romance animes or stuff in that vain. I liked Saikano a lot.

Hell, I get weird looks whenever I mention EITHER of these things offline. Most people I know have never even heard of Final Fantasy (!!!) and people can't seem to understand that cartoons aren't solely for children. Hopefully A Scanner Darkly will finally change that, ho ho.

Harry Potter rocks. Another thing that I'm not ashamed of is rocking out to Michael Jackson Thriller.

I'm not ashamed I have a myspace. I'm not ashamed I listen to mainstream rock and punk, VGM soundtracks or anime OSTs. I'm not ashamed that I watch anime, I'm not ashamed that I play all matters of video games and loved the kingdom hearts series. I'm not ashamed that all I read is fantasy literature. I'm not ashamed that I communicate and understand computers better than I do people most the time.

Hydra Aug 22, 2006 11:43 AM

@ OctoberOmicron, Harry Potter is great. I want to know who RAB is. I wish Severus and Lilly had gotten it on ... maybe then he wouldn't have been so bitter. I'm still hoping that Severus went renegade for a good reason. If I could wear a Ravenclaw scarf, I probably would. This is, however, not something I tell anyone irl that doesn't seem to share my interest.

As far as Eragon, I read the first two and intend to keep reading, even though I think they suck. Don't ask me why. Maybe because I'm hoping Paollini will suddenly develop talent (or at least learn the magic of active verbs) and stop embarrassing homeschoolers, of which I was until uni.

The things about me that would likely frowned upon by the general populace of gamingforce: I dunno, sometimes I buy things just because I like the packaging. Games and music included. And I like Kim Possilble/Danny Phantom/Spongebob Squarepants. Spongebob is my favorite non-anime cartoon Ever.

Celes Chere Aug 22, 2006 01:27 PM

I love cartoons as well as anime. I even enjoy the cheesy ones on Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon.

I'm a Sailor Moon nut. At one point I started collecting dolls and such but that quickly became too expensive and time consuming. I still watch some episodes though, and I'll admit, as inaccurate and embarrassing as it may be, the dub provides some entertainment and I wish it was still on Toonami.

Blanka Aug 22, 2006 02:10 PM

I love reading The Gulag Archipelago.. It's amazing the looks people will give a sixteen year old girl carying around a 600 page book.

I love writing out Russian poetry. Don't ask me why, but something about Pushkin and Osip Mandelstam gets to me.

If there's a conspiracy book laying around I will pick it up and I will read it.

My music tastes are pretty normal I suppose. I love the old jazz and some of the new Rock. Sadly, I was obsessed with Creed for about 3 years, thankfully that died down. Now I'm turning towards Three Days Grace.

Movie wise I like some pretty odd ones. Mostly Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Rocky, Rambo, Das Boot, A Scanner Darkly, .. stuff along those lines. I have a weird fascination with documentaries and foreign films.

And there you have it..

sleipner Aug 24, 2006 07:15 AM

hmmm people make fun of me because I am a heterosexual man that cried at the lion king and loves cute anime characters....like chiyo chan and hunny senpai...and cute animals like penguins and hamsters and rabbits. (and now everyone is probably thinking I'm not a guy at all ::sigh)

men can like cute shit too you know T_T

I'm ashamed that I listen to Hello!Project groups, especially W. But I can't stop myself!!

Max POWER Aug 25, 2006 11:47 AM

Things I'm not ashamed of? Because there are some things that I AM ashamed of, like crying at the end of the Sixth Sense....when I was seventeen. >_> Not because of the plot or anything, it just triggered something unrelated in my head.

Uhm....yeah. I'm not ashamed to come to Gamingforce with the rest of you nerdlingers. I'm not ashamed that I love watching House and playing Trauma Center all the time. I'm not ashamed that I have a facebook and myspace account, although I don't use them all too much. I'm not ashamed that I'm attracted to tomboys and girls with short hair, or that I find girls in suits hot. Uhm...there's probably more, but I don't want to drag on.

Mucknuggle Aug 25, 2006 03:20 PM

- I enjoy Linkin Park, Evanesence, Christina Aguilera, some Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson, some Madonna
- Harry Potter books are ok, but they're starting to read like the same thing over and over and over.
- I like anime.
- I listen to anime and videogame music.
- I buy anime DVDs.

These are things that most people I know either frown upon or raise eyebrows at.

What's up with Green Day suddenly not being "in"? American Idiot was a fantastic album. I just finished listening to it again this morning.

It's because they were orginally a "punk" band, and American Idiot was a "commercial success" and people feel like they sold out (though people said the same thing when they signed to a major record label in the 90s), or something. I dunno.

I have a MySpace and a Facebook, and I update them regularly. I also have a bazillion online journals that I rarely update. Also, I like Metallica regardless of what dumbshit they do to make people dislike them even more (although nothing could bring me to like St. Anger. Nothing.).

I also have listened to some Backstreet Boys/N*sync songs in the past. Never bought an album, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't like some of their stuff.

The fact that people can ridicule me just for being makes whatever dorky interests I have moot. Pokemon, Harry Potter, anime, you name it. So, yeah, no insecurities here. :D

Arainach Aug 27, 2006 11:45 PM

I like FF7. There. I said it. I acknowledge its flaws; I admit that there are better games in existence. But when it comes time to replay the FF series, that one creeps up to the top of my list each time. It may be the "first RPG" syndrome, but I don't care. I love the stupid game.

I also enjoy Harry Potter, although not fanatically. Sure, it's not Shakespeare, but when you can write a book that people from 9 months to 9 decades old can enjoy, you're sure as hell doing something right.

kat Aug 29, 2006 12:41 AM

I cry when I listen to John Mayer songs. YOU MOCK, but you're just jealous that you're not as sensitive or sincere as he is. And no I don't really believe that but he fakes it really fucking well, he says shit women want to hear and does it in a really really good way.

Yanni is pretty good at what he does, whatever it is.

ashaman Aug 30, 2006 01:24 AM

Not ashamed, eh? I didn't even know I was supposed to be ashamed about half this stuff. So what if I like video games, Harry Potter, Eragon, comic books, and have a MySpace page? Aren't those all "cool" and "mainstream" now?

Sure, when I was in high school you kept quiet about reading the Wheel of Time or playing Final Fantasy VII on a Friday night instead of going out on a date. But from what I can tell playing video games, watching movies about comic book heroes, reading fantasy books, and watching/reading anime/manga is not stuff that you get beat up for in high school now. But then again, what do I know? It has been 10 years since I was a freshman so my knowledge of current high school trends is a little out of date. At this point it doesn't matter what I like or do because most of the other professionals in my field (even those twice my age) like or do the same thing.

So I am going to pretend this thread was created in 1999 and announce what I was not ashamed of back then:

I'm not ashamed that I:
would rather play my playstation than go drink beer with a bunch of jocks
have a geocities page
talk to girls on ICQ instead of the phone
am going to the midnight showing of Episode 1
chose to be in the band and gymnastics rather than play football
still watch Batman cartoons
listen to classical and video game music instead of "cool" music like Backstreet Boys, Ricky Martin, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers...

Woo this is fun!

Finally, back to current times, I am not ashamed that the only reason I even looked at this thread was because OO started it and I remembered chatting with him a lot (as chocobomog) when I first got on GFF back in 2001.
