Afro Samurai

Quote:

After watching his father die in a duel against an unbeatable villian known only as 'Justice,' young Afro fixes his life on the study of swords and revenge. The tale of Afro Samurai is one of bloody hardship and pain. Along his solitary path of revenge for his murdered father, he sheds no tears and knows no love. Forever chased by powerful enemies in a lawless technology-speckled dystopia, he evades bullets and blade to reach his final prey: a man who will not die. But Afro will reach his quarry - even if it means painting a road of blood and brains from here to the bitter inevitable end.

* Taken from the official website.
What makes this anime so special, other than the fact that the main character is a samurai thats black. Well its seems like the "baddest mother fucker", Samuel L. Jackson, is going to be the voice for the Afro Samurai. And not only that, but this show will air on Spike TV.
This anime was announced way back in 2005 and it may be too early to start a thread but since a trailer has been released maybe its worth taking an early look.

The trailer looks badass. Looks like a ripoff from champloo but when you see the end of the trailer you can tell that it will have some boondock feel to it.
It's been announced that it will only have 5 episode but from what I saw in the trailer, the animation and flow of the action is awsome. It's a shame that they are mostly marketing this through the name of Samuel Jackson becuase the show itself looks great.
You can see the trailer at the official site. Not sure what the release date is since all the trailer says is Coming Soon.

i know I'll be watching this anime not cause Im a fan for samurai and head decapitations but cause the music composer is none other than the great Producer (and rapper) RZA from Wu-Tang Clan.

Freddy Krueger Aug 14, 2006 05:36 AM

I have been waiting for this since 2005, Samurais + Afro + Rza Samuel L. Jackson + Gonzo = GREATNESS. Any date when it's airing?

Outlaw Aug 16, 2006 11:56 PM

This looks interesting....and I'm probaly only saying that because it sort of reminded me of Samurai Champloo...but sill, the story sounds solid....and I may actualy like it....Too bad we don't get spike anymore.

Cobra Aug 17, 2006 06:49 PM

I'm waiting this anime for one year now -_-

Just to put up the (age restricted) trailer :

Black Ninja Aug 17, 2006 10:47 PM

This oughtta be good. The trailer is having problems downloading, but it does kinda remind me of Bebop/Champloo. Is there any word on who's producing/starring in it, other than Samuel L Jackson?

Dark Nation Aug 17, 2006 10:55 PM

Seems to me like they're gonna do 5 episodes initally to see what the viewship is (I'd watch it on Spike TV, but no cable---yet).

Or they could pull a FLCL and just have 5-6 episodes of PURE AWESOME, with EXCELLENT animation, I for one will welcome this, if it happens.

Bradylama Aug 21, 2006 08:07 AM

Looks like the kind of show Aaron McGruder wishes he could make.

Thought it'd have a more tongue-in-cheek quality, but the trailer just looks dumb.

Really? I thought it reminded me more of Hellsing and/or Ninja Scroll. I just saw the preview for this not too long ago myself and I'm also looking forward to it.

Samurai + Sam Jackson + Gonzo Animation Studios + RZA beats = ANIMATION ORGASM

Also... Nigga puffin' on a BLUNT! HOLLA!

Arkhangelsk Aug 22, 2006 01:38 PM

The animation for this looks stellar, so I think I'll be looking forward to it. It'll certainly be one of the only decent looking black guys in anime.

However, I want to know what Samuel L. Jackson is smoking...first Snakes, and now this?! Not that I think this is stupid (as opposed to Snakes), but they seem like...odd...choices to make in the industry. Just...odd.

Paco Aug 22, 2006 01:40 PM

Are you kidding me? SAMUEL JACKSON IS SMOKIN' A BLUNT! This CAN'T be an odd choice. :p

I wonder if the fansub (if subs are needed, that's it) community will pick this as a regular Japanese anime, seeing that this will air on USA and most raws come directly from Japan. Otherwise I'll have to wait to DVD rips seeing that Spike TV is pretty much ignored from my Cable company ;____;

Cirno Aug 22, 2006 02:15 PM

A blunt and a random "mothafucka" at the end of the trailer. Uh.

Well I like the music a lot. RZA's stuff in Ghost Dog was awesome, so I'm looking forward to the soundtrack for Afro Samurai. Other than that, while the fight scenes look kind of interesting, I'm not that pumped for this. It just seems like a bunch of stereotypes shoved into a doped up Kenshin OAV.

Admit that you want to see it for the music! >=p. If he chooses to add one good ol wu tang track, that'll make me a happy guy for life. Lookin at the anime looks interesting to me at least. Rza has that skill. It'd would kick ass if they make a RZA character.

Cirno Aug 25, 2006 12:42 AM

Oh I'll watch it for the soundtrack and possibly awesome fight scenes, but for anything else? Probably not. Unless the Afro Samurai is some kind of spiritual ancestor of Flynn from Snakes on a Plane.

hungrytim Aug 25, 2006 06:59 PM

I don't know if any of you guy's know this, but it takes place in the future.

Also, each episode costs $1 million to make. That's a shit load of money, to spend on any anime, so you know it will be good.

And if anyone wants a place to talk about the show, they can follow the link in my signature to Afro Samurai Fan Forums. It's my first forum and I need all the members I can get.

Shenlon Jan 4, 2007 07:28 AM

Just getting up to date.
The first episode airs tonight at 11pm in spike tv. I sadly have no cable and even if i did they don't provide spike tv.
Luckily enough they are providing the first episode in the official website. Not sure if its the full version but thats what I'm hoping for.
http://www.spiketv.com/mods/afro/player/index.jhtml

EDIT:
Ok so its just a preview about roughly around half of the first episode.
Lots of fast action that doesn't make any sense.

LestaD Jan 4, 2007 02:02 PM

whoa this seem's pretty adictive and funny too (?afro samurai?wtf?).
Too bad I cant view the episode shenlon post there because im not from US or Canada.
Oh wel... guess ill wait for the downloader's friend, the torrent

First fight spoiler..well kinda
Spoiler:
I'm guessing they use bandanas to show their ranks among samurais. Correct me if im wrong but the bandanas that apeared in the first fight had "first" and "second" written on it.
If anyone else has seen the first fight could you explain me how the hell did the afro dude's head flip off? I mean the other was using guns lol

chato Jan 4, 2007 05:35 PM

Other than the incomplete storytelling and animation, I was focusing more in RZA's work ;p.

Freddy Krueger Jan 4, 2007 05:56 PM

The animation and music is amazing, the fights are really cool as well. You can never judge an anime's story on the first episode so I will wait to see how it turns out.

Soldier Jan 5, 2007 01:06 AM

So they show more violence and gore than anything from Adult Swim (not counting non-anime fare like Metalocalypse), but they felt the need to censor even the most common swears ("son of a ___"). At least one "shit" was snuck in.

Also, I called it.

Spoiler:
The wisecracking partner is an imaginary friend for Afro, a la Tyler Durden.

Come on, no way none of those villains would resist the urge to kill someone that annoying.

Jonathan Ingram Jan 5, 2007 02:15 PM

Well, I was impressed. When the project was first announced, I rolled my eyes, as it seemed as though they were trying to bite off of Samurai Champloo. However, Afro Samurai seems to have built itself into its own style, as opposed to... well, biting off of Champloo. I'm looking forward to the rest of it.

Ryuu Jan 5, 2007 07:59 PM

I enjoyed it, watched it twice as they decided to show it twice. It remind me of Champloo as others have stated, but I liked the art and feel to the whole thing.

I'm still surprised at how violent it was compared to Adult Swim, especially since it was shown at 11 pm.

Either way, looking forward to the next episode.

chato Jan 5, 2007 08:03 PM

Seeing it the second time made me love it even more than what i said earlier. I'd like to see a dream match between Mugen and Afro. Other than that, I'm liking the little humor from his little friend (Ninja Ninja).

Rockgamer Jan 5, 2007 08:10 PM

I liked the show as well. I thought it would be stupid at first, with Japanese people trying to make a show about a black guy being a samurai (I almost thought it would be like those silly samurai fight sequences on The Boondocks, just extended into an entire show), but it turned out to be pretty good. I'll definitely keep watching.

K_ Takahashi Jan 6, 2007 12:32 PM

I find the story to be one of the most mished-mashed concepts I have come across in a while, though beautifully animated, $1 million per ep is pretty obcene, well...It's coming out fo Spike's budget so I guess there is no complaining.

One of the only problems I had was the fact that there were too many commercials, like...4, but no television watermark (that we usually see on the bottom right) so I cant complain, the runtime was kinda short (21 mins) and there was no ED animation, I guess a few illistrated manga images were just too hard to come by.

Lastly I noticed that there were two writers from each respected verison (Japanese and English) I wonder what the differences are story/dialouge-wise OR just language issues.

Spoiler:
Not to get off topic, but announced a few years ago was Tokyo Tribes which MTV is going to pull the same thing we've seen here, however, I cannot find any info on it at the time

S3 2007 Jan 6, 2007 09:53 PM

The animation for this title was incredible, but I just thought the story made no sense at all, they really didn't make it all that compelling.

I don't know maybe I need to see more episodes.

Soldier Jan 6, 2007 10:25 PM

I find it slightly disturbing how the samurai characters are all seen openly smoking blunts. The excessive violence is controversial enough, but an animation visually stating that "drugs are cool" is bound to piss off certain individuals.

Well that's TV today for you, I've notice that for awhile now TV has been on the decline.

crabman Jan 7, 2007 12:27 AM

Did anybody find it funny how Samuel Jackson only had like 2 lines but he did them incredibly well?

Like when he's number two, and not his dad i think his only lines are: Shut up, and oishii..... refreshing.

I dunno did anybody else expect something more stereotypic of Mr. Jackson like SAY WHAT AGAIN! I DARE YOU MOTHAFUCK4 I DOUBLE DARE YA!

chato Jan 7, 2007 12:30 AM

Hey , if they want to add PIFF in this anime then they can!. No anime I've seen over the past years did that yet =]

Umm, he's also the voice of Ninja Ninja (the sidekick dude that follows Number Two around), so he had way more than two lines in total.

Soldier Jan 7, 2007 02:17 AM

Who plays the white gunslinger with the liver spots? He sounds an awful lot like Bill, of Kill Bill (though that might be intentional).

I've never seen Kill Bill, and I don't remember anybody with that description (was he one of the guys during the first fight sequence with Afro?). But aside from the main characters, everyone else was voiced by regular voice actors, no celebrities or anything.

I'm sorry. :(

I thought that was really obvious, though. I noticed it right away when he first started talking.

It's the dude who killed Afro's father. I think his name is Justice or something. Anyway, he's the main bad guy (most likely).

Rockgamer Jan 7, 2007 05:29 AM

Oh, that guy! Yeah, his name is Justice (or Number One, if you prefer), and I'm pretty sure he's the main bad guy. He's voiced by Ron Pearlman.

Newbie1234 Jan 10, 2007 06:47 PM

The first episode I thought was very well done, with an excellent first 10 or so minutes. I'm hoping that we'll be seeing more of Justice in the coming episodes and not have to wait until the last one.

Probably the biggest disappointment for me is that there are only going to be 5 episodes.

Shenlon Jan 13, 2007 12:27 PM

Just in case you missed it, spiketv is hosting the new episodes weekly on their site but they do take off the previous one.
Episode 2 up Now.
http://www.spiketv.com/mods/afro/player/index.jhtml

I think what the episode lacks in story and creativity it makes up in the animation. They're also pushing the limits on what they can do even at 11pm.
Spoiler:
Lke sex scene NoWay.
I think its a cheap way to get the series up and known. But since the main character is black it was obvious that they would make him get some "nookie". I'm awaiting the arrival of the crackhead :/

crabman Jan 13, 2007 01:48 PM

Lol, awaiting a crackhead.....

And ya Shenlon i totally agree with you; afro samurai is like a visual treat but not much else. Maybe it's all the commercials stopping the flow of the show but SOMETHING about it just makes me not interested.

Does anybody else think that ninja ninja might not exist? I mean seriously think about it. He might just be a manifestation of afro's thoughts. Like so far in the story it would totally fit; right?

Soldier Jan 13, 2007 02:25 PM

Already mentioned that theory in the first page. The way he popped out of nowhere in this episode nearly confirms my beliefs.

And yeah, I don't know how they're getting away with the excessive gore and moaning sex.

Newbie1234 Jan 13, 2007 02:48 PM

Episode 2 was pretty disappointing and pretty much acknowledged that Afro Samurai's story isn't going any better than the typical run-of-the-mill anime. Still, I can imagine this episode being a lot better had the show been just a movie and things immediately moved on.

Spoiler:
The flashbacks were mostly lame, aside from the first one where Afro gets his ass beat. How he gains his skills all of a sudden also seemed poorly explained, and they should've at least have had him grow up to be a teenager before kicking ass to make it more believable.

I was also not a fan of the sex scene. Thankfully it was short, because it was just pointless to me and felt like an excuse to have sex such as in a hentai movie other than something meaningful. I felt bad for Kelly Hu, especially that her character dies right afterwards... It also made Afro seem less noble and bad ass a character in my opinion, having been baited into having sex so easily.

I'd have to agree as well. The story is pretty weak aside from the cool idea of the headbands and expensive visuals. The commercials also really got in the way. I might end up just downloading the episodes the day after to better enjoy them without the commercials.

That seems possible actually, nobody else ever seems to notice him. We've also had no back story about their relationship so far either.

Ever seen Aeon Flux? That had a shitload of "moaning sex" and they got away with it. As for the second episode..I can see where it's going but I also want to see something flawless and more action. They'll redeem themselves for the live-action movie--maybe.
