Hey dude. Nice work with those. Don't know what else to say. later!.

Magi Aug 11, 2006 11:17 PM

This is one of the few time that I actually see your colored piece, but why Oekaki? The newest one is shaping up to be pretty good looking. :3 Although how you are coloring are fairly conservative (as in being careful, as oppose to "bold"), although I guess its hard to take chances with Oekakis. Unfortunately, I don't think there are some of the direct bitmap line tool in some of the advence graphic software as do in Oekaki.

Thanks~

For my choice of oekaki, I'm a lot more used to the interface and method of coloring on it moreso than I am on major graphics programs. Its ok though, I'll probably start CGing in programs like Photoshop a lot more now that I'm getting the hang of it. But yeah, since there aren't many of the advanced options in oekaki, its a bit more difficult to really go crazy with the coloring.

Vemp Aug 12, 2006 12:05 AM

Yo ultima, finally decided to post your stuff here eh. Well, it seems that you've been practicing a lot. The latest ones you showed are a bit better compared to the early works I saw. (must be the yaoi)

Anyways, word of advice, don't stop drawing. Don't stop. Remember, you don't want to draw, you NEED to draw.

UltimaIchijouji Aug 12, 2006 12:53 AM

Looking at my old sketchbooks makes me cry.

UltimaIchijouji Aug 14, 2006 02:58 AM

http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/2...olornz6.th.jpg
Old traditional color piece. Colored with colored pencil.

http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/5...0002ua4.th.jpg
Color pencil testing. Didn't do much with this, didn't even ink it. Very sloppy, but pretty much shows the extent of my traditional coloring skills.

http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/861...0004yo2.th.jpg
Something I inked today. Still need to do the lines a bit nicer but its coming along. Going to CG this one.

Pretty much just wanted to show you guys (read:Magi) that I do color. I don't color often, but I color. Sadly, what I do color doesn't really look that great. Definitely going to take a lot of time to improve my traditional color and CG coloring skills so that I can have complete-looking works to show.

Magi Aug 14, 2006 10:24 PM

Its kinda weird not seeing the line going into her groin area but come out on the stomach. Did I gave the right advice last time? I think since you eliminated the line that is use to describe the topography of her crotch area, it probably redundant to put it near her stomach. Although overall, I think it looks pretty good. :3 I like your hands too, even though it is kinda big, those are really good girl hands. >_< Which I seem to have trouble with.

Magi Aug 21, 2006 08:56 PM

Looking good, keep it up. :3 Are you using photoshop? Did you seperate it into layers? Have you decided on the light source yet? How are you planning on shading it?

Thanks~ Yeah, using CS2. Everything is a layer: Lineart, Hair, Clothes, and Skin. I'll probably add shading and lighting layers too. Although I have no idea where the light source will be or how I'm gonna shade it, which is why I might call it quits for the day.

Magi Sep 8, 2006 03:45 AM

Hm, interesting. I see you are doing some different poses (second sketch on the top in particular), that is good. Experiment with the body build up a little. Although I am wondering, do you have the hobbit of finding reference for poses that you are unsure of? It really helps sometimes, and when you are comfortable with certain angle with some practice, you won't need to find reference for specific poses anymore.

Quote:

"I want to graduate."
Is that drawn from life? :D Moer!

UltimaIchijouji Sep 9, 2006 11:16 AM

I'm trying to do more action-ish, movement-ish poses in order to learn, so yes. I want to start my manga but since its a lot of action, I don't want to start it prematurely.

I've also been doing lots of sketches of characters I might use, just kind of creating the characters as I go along. I have more stuff but I'll scan it in later.

And yes, I very much do want to graduate. :p

Dai Sep 9, 2006 04:26 PM

I'm really impressed with the way you improved since last year. I like those recent sketches especially (1st, 3rd, 4th-6th). The 4th one is my favorite.

Though the scanning for that colored Krue picture doesnt really do much justice (Its a bit discolored). It looks alot better in real life. :)

Dont really know what else to say. You're never around anymore at school so, draw more :'>

Lol, graduation.

Yo, loser. I just went through these on the train like.. half an hour ago, so all I have to say is 'use you're damn sketchbook more.' A year and a half and you're not even done?

DO THE DISCO!!

ComradeTande Oct 21, 2006 11:00 AM

i love your style (especially digital paintings) but at times i feel like the characters limbs are just a little stiff jointed or the poses aren't exactly right. just work on that (i admit, it is the hardest part of art), and it'll be perfect!! i really want to see your style of painting too (watercolours blah D:< needs more acrylics!!! blends nicer and looks cooler, and is a little easier to handle)

UltimaIchijouji Dec 5, 2006 12:46 AM

Two new sketches. Very sketchy sketches that need work. Planning on using them in a piece when I get time though.

Vemp Dec 5, 2006 04:28 AM

I like the top one. Your anatomy has improved, though I think they still need work, especially on foreshortening/perspective/diff. views/or something.

Shenlon Dec 8, 2006 09:01 AM

you've got some nice sketches.
The top one looks like yuna. The bottom one I like better because of the facial expression.

Bull. Shut up. Lol. Anyways, that's right Ultima. Draw those hoes like there's no tomorrow!

I'm a visual person, so I like redraws to help me with anatomy. If you don't like it, don't click; http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v5...0s/anatomy.jpg

1. It might be 'style', but distance from neck on both sides = width of head.

2. Your bodies are usually really long but I'll chuck it out to style for now.

3. Your elbow ends at hipbone/end of ribcage.

Keep it up. Too lazy to do anymore.

Its pencil. Whole thing done today on the back of a thematic essay assignment sheet. Don't have pens to ink, so I just had to take a picture. My scanner sucks.

Why Am I Allowed to Have Gray Paint Jan 2, 2007 11:21 PM

I really like that "Yield 65%" thing; she has a great body, but the arm just looks wrong. The upper arm tapers too much, the forearm looks like it has been whittled down, and the hand seems far too big. I like the overall style though, with the hair covering the face.

I don't like the fact that the River of Souls piece has diff tones in the background yet she's flat. Lighting is all messed up too. But I guess you're rushed. Anyhoo moving on, I like the composition on the one taken with a camera.

Yeah people have been on my ass about that all night. My answer was: She's not exactly flat (there is shading), but if I have time before I have to send it out, I will fix it. And I'll also probably end up fixing it for my other four portfolios. The piece is "done" but its not done, if you know what I mean.

Anyway, the other 'cornerstone' piece is done.

http://img363.imageshack.us/img363/8...letekb2.th.jpg

If I have time, I'll try to "fix" the circles, even though I like them as is. The last two rows are larger, but when reduced to the size of the others, the symmetry is still off and it doesn't look good (I lost the brush size :\/)

The coloring is better here, although I'm still annoyed at her crotch. It's like she's flat there or something. Don't blame it on tight pants cause those would only accentuate the line from thight to crotch to thigh.

Greater contrast in skin tone and more tones overall would've been nice. And uh... you could always just copy and paste the circles.....

UltimaIchijouji Jan 13, 2007 02:34 AM

Had a chance to work on it before I sent it out to Carnegie-Mellon. I have 3 hours to work before I have to send it out to Drexel, although I don't know if the big post office is open today...

The new piece kind of rings more incomplete to me than the old piece did, but it does look better. I need to add more lighting/shading to Krue and blend the mountains better, and it will look much more complete. As soon as CS3 finishes reinstalling, this will happen.

After almost 22 hours straight of drawing, I did get some sleep last night. A decent amount too. But it begins once again....

I know you have lots and lots of references and art books. Whatever you have on your computer, anything that you really admire (that has a person in it) open it up in photoshop or whatever. Now use the dropper tool.

Click main skin tone, and hold on to that color. Open another window if you want and brush it on. Then click on shadow tone. Compare shadow with the main skin tone.

Now take a look at your painting*, and compare your two contrasting tones. Tell me what you've learned.

*It's too late for portfolio sakes, but I was talkin bout river of souls. This is for self improvement.

Its never too late for portfolio's sake (unless if its February 2nd already).

Anyway I didn't do what you recommended because you know how I love to rebel. I understand where you're coming from and I'll probably reference some stuff to get the lighting perfect, but I want to figure out how to find colors and midtones between two colors etc etc. I'm bad at that.

http://content.imagesocket.com/thumbs/20656.jpg

Save #20, some dude from ConceptArt told me all the stuff that was wrong, starting to work on it. Blah blah work on it more soon.

I want to work on my other piece too. Juggling time between this and regents and games is so hard.

edit//also I flipped it and her face looks kind of weird. I don't really want to mess with lineart anymore but it seems I have no choice anymore.

It's not to copy the tones from the picture. Its to give yourself a smack and realize the large difference.

It's also to show you the different tones on the color wheel. A little purple? Maybe blue. Green?

And stop playing those damn games. Your brain is already rotting, you don't need to speed up the process.

Yeah my style is similar to the Kingdom Hearts art style here, I noticed, but they're actually two of my original characters, Roiz and Krue. They've been in most of my other pictures too.

Shitty self-portrait. Painter IX.5, ~60mins. I hate it, but it made me feel better. Life hasn't been very happy to me.

Chapter titles for the second to last chapter in my manga. Low res. camera shots because I don't like my scanner.

I got bored coming home from work. Will redraw + CG for www.deepindivine.com (NAKU official website!)

Magi May 15, 2007 12:40 AM

Hey, that looks pretty good. :3 Nice perspective for something like that. So how are you going about to CG it?

aiyaitsai May 15, 2007 06:28 PM

Holy crap can it be? You actually SHRUNK your images first?!

Well this new one is nice. You've been improving~
As magi said, nice perspective but I think you'd see less of her arm.
Anyways, keep it up.

UltimaIchijouji May 27, 2007 09:02 AM

I have a few more pencil sketches to scan, but I'll scan, CG, and post them after I finish...

designdraft 3: design en bleu

I'm so proud of it. It's my first Wordpress theme from the ground up. That's my sandbox so theres nothing interesting to read (only some pictures in my gallery sandbox), but you can still play around with the layout and see how far that gets you.

Estimated Launch: Early June.

I still need to start getting content ready but yeah. Tell me what you think of it.

Your latest looks like some good line-art. I like the frame design, as it leads you into the pic from the barrel into the girl's finger, which brings you to the characters. Nice composition, there. It'll be interesting to see how you color it. Keep me updated since I don't check the forums often enough.

Well, I think you could use a little more mechanical details and textures on some of the parts. The gears and the cog in the back for example, you can probably elaborate it a little as you go. Adding to the visual complexity of the entire image.

I fixed up the cog and the chain, since their messiness was bothering me. Also I finished the frame! So now I just have to draw the picture inside. I'm looking to start coloring today, and maybe finish sometime early next week. We'll see how inspired I can stay to reach that goal.

As for technical detail, I was going to try to add a lot of it with color, but I see what you mean, and I'm going to try to work on it. This picture has to end up as perfect as I can make it.

From the last progress image, I finished the lineart and made a lot of adjustments from my original pencil sketch's lineart. Firstly, I fixed Roiz's left arm to a more natural position, took a hell of a lot of tries to get it right. I also fixed his neck and chest area to be more anatomically correct. Also fixed some issues with Krue's hair and foreshortened arm. Furthermore, coloring has begun. Dai helped me with some of this stuff, so a big thank you for seeing and fixing what I couldn't see or fix.

Magi Aug 7, 2007 03:15 PM

This is taking a awfully long time. Do you think it might be easier to use polygon tool to fill it in? If you don't use the fill tool as a principle...

Well I didn't work on it for several days in succession. Normally I don't use any tool to automatically fill colors; I just use brush tool. Is that bad?

Progression #20. Did some coloring and lighting, but my knowledge of light is seriously lacking. I tried coloring some of the skin but it looked so fake I just got rid of it and went back to the solid color.

edit//More lighting. I'm aware that the light on her face is wrong now, I'm going to fix it so that it seems as though light is coming from the viewer; whatever she's pointing at in the hole. If I were to act as though the sun were the only light source, I think the picture would be too dark, and I was going for a lively atmosphere.

Here's some color practice that I posted in the Daily Art Thread. Used my friend's picture and did her beauty no justice. Oh well. I'll probably do more of these sometime soon, probably after I finish deep in divine.

http://img182.imageshack.us/img182/2585/ceciliadt7.jpg

Also, the next sketch that I'll be completely digitizing:

http://img224.imageshack.us/img224/7440/cimg2771cc1.jpg

I think I'll call this one "lost in nostalgia" since its similar to "deep in divine." The name keeps growing on me. But digi-inking and cging this one won't be fun at all.

Lots of lineart modifications. Lots of coloring Krue, who is done except for her pants at this point. I'm questioning my method of coloring hair, but I think it's pretty ok for the most part. Today was about 12 hours of work total.

Tomorrow I'll probably add the lighting on the sphereblade and start adding the base colors for the shotgun and cogs. After I do Roiz it'll be smooth sailing. I hope to have it done by Monday.

Lots and lots of progress. More base colors on the frame, fully lighted shotgun barrel, everything on Roiz save his hair, and lineart fixes. I'm aiming to finish tomorrow night. I'm thinking there's only about 10-15 hours of work left to be done. If I sit down and concentrate, I can finish it by the end of the weekend.

Vemp Aug 12, 2007 10:43 AM

Dude, finish it already.

Meth Aug 12, 2007 06:34 PM

10-15 hours? Damn, what's taking so long? I never spend that long coloring anything. Are you using a mouse?

UltimaIchijouji Aug 12, 2007 06:38 PM

I'm slow, it's big. I also will probably have to do the lines again at the end because I have to upscale it by 3-5 times to actually print it. Plus I've never put this much depth into a colored piece before so I'm kind of learning as I go along.

All just excuses, the real answer is I just suck.

Rather, I think you are being indecisive about what exactly that you want to do, and also being a little bit too careful about the whole thing.

Well, it is complete. 100%. Done. My second 100% completed CG work. Not much to say. It could have been a bit cleaner and now I know that I have to draw at the size I intend to print at, so I'll keep that in mind for my next poster. I'm very pleased with the outcome and I hope people enjoy it.

I made 13 prints of the picture at 12in. x 17in. to give to family members who have helped fund me going to college, my workplace and boss, and for two of my friends. I plan on numbering them 00-12 before I give them out, if not only to feed my ego into thinking they have some sort of value.

Many compliments on the excellent sketches! You have a very good sense of how to use line thickness and such subtleties to give the characters depth even in the simplicity of contour line, making them pleasing to the eye. Very well wrought. ;)

Heres an update. Hopefully someone somewhere will notice.

I don't dabble too much with illustration anymore, mainly because of time restraints, but I'm going to try to change that. But I do design things on a daily basis.

Hotlinking mainly because I'm really lazy and don't like posting things twice.
