Your haven.

Where do you go for reprieve when you feel overwhelmed?

There's this old ass cemetary by where I live with a lot of interesting mausoleums. It's usually very quiet and empty there, so it's a great place to get away from the noise of the world.

Adara Aug 11, 2006 09:56 AM

I don't have a single specific haven. Anywhere quiet with no or few people works for me. Bookstores and libraries are good as well as a nearby lake that is very quiet and has a lot of wildlife. The lake is my personal favorite thinking place.

There is NOWHERE i can go here in Sydney that doesn't require a two hour drive or a four hour train/bus ride where I can relax.

My room is the only place where I can truly relax.

Chie Aug 11, 2006 10:38 AM

my room is where I get all my peace and tranquility. I can lock my door and ignore everyone and if it gets too loud I turn on my favorite tunes and relax and I also have an aquarium in my room so I often like to stare at the fish

gidget Aug 11, 2006 01:08 PM

When I get too stressed out with the world, I just go into my room and take a nap. That calms me down more than anything else.

Interesting. My room (at home or at apartment) is always a place I can go to for some thinking time, etc.; but another place I'm comfortable with "getting away" is on public transportation. Just put on some noise-isolating earphones and grab a seat, and you're in your own world. Maybe that just works for me since that way fits conveniently into my schedule. It may also have something to due with me liking to be alone when there are other people around. :/

There's a little patio on top of the servery that overlooks the soccer fields. I prefer that corner to myself if I feel overwhelmed at times.

I agree with you. I use to love riding the school bus because I could look out the window and daydream. However, the only form of public transportation we have is a bus--and I don't know if other southerns have the same problem--but all the females on the bus have to talk to everyone, especially if there's a female bus driver. My mom and little sister are very social with them, so they don't realize that maybe I don't want to ride the bus to be bombarded by their conversations. Don't get me wrong, I like socializing, but when I ride in a vehicle the majority of the time I want to daydream.

I used to use my room to get away from it all. However, you can't do that in a dormitory since you have to live with someone else (and sometimes they don't have a life). It causes my blood to boil to think that I can't even escape in my own room! If it's after 5 p.m. I will sometimes sneak into my workplace and use that time to get away.

However, we hired more people this semester that go to the library to study, so that probably means I won't have that area anymore to hide in. I would hide in the study rooms, but they have windows and you know how hard it is to relax when you know someone could be watching you like an animal in a zoo? I'm on the constant search to find places to relax and daydream.

Mine is just infront of my piano.

Nahual Aug 11, 2006 02:09 PM

Although I used to go into a corner with a blanket in my hand, I now just go in my room and lay down on my bed.

Rydia Aug 11, 2006 03:22 PM

Anywhere quiet usually works best for me. There aren't very many areas around my condo where I can relax apart from perhaps the balcony. Even then, I still prefer remaining indoors.

xSummonerYUnax Aug 11, 2006 08:41 PM

I usually go to my room since I can't seem to find privacy anywhere else. I also also feel more relaxed at night than morning for some reason.

I also unwind most easily at night. Something about being up when most are asleep instills a sense of tranquility...

SOJC Aug 11, 2006 09:48 PM

I don't know, my room I guess, but I spend 80+% in there(during the day) when I'm not at college, so I guess you could call it a place to get away, to hide from family at least, especially with my MP3 Player on full blast...

In fact, I would say my room is my getaway place...

Summonmaster Aug 12, 2006 12:20 AM

My room won't count since I'm in here way too frequently, so I actually count my piano in the living room to be more of a getaway place. There, I just let my fingers loose and play my songs with more expression than usual and let stress out through music.

Miki4 Aug 12, 2006 02:51 AM

Either in my rooms or at the sea shore.

zerosconcubine Aug 12, 2006 03:30 AM

I usally hang around this small tree area near the fields, or watering hole before Spanish hills. Its small, but very soothing during the day. Though, I could do with out the damn mosqitos.

Thanatos Aug 12, 2006 10:02 AM

My room in the middle of the night. (Lights all off. I need darkness)

It's where I just spend time talking to myself and thinking where I went wrong.

sleipner Aug 12, 2006 01:27 PM

my head...there's a great place in there somewhere, a memory i like ro relive.

But if it has to be a real place...the park by the bay. I like to hear water for some reason.

Duck-Man Aug 12, 2006 01:31 PM

In my room, or out in the streets late at night when its quiet.

Bernard Black Aug 12, 2006 02:07 PM

I used to chill out by sitting under my desk in my old room but now I've moved I find the shower a better place than any. Another place would be a bridge over the motorway near where I live, but only at night. I've not seen anyone up there in a long while and in the dark it's almost peaceful in a way to watch the traffic on its way down the road. Since there are no streetlights either you can see the stars perfectly; it's even better with a full moon.

Syndrome Aug 12, 2006 06:20 PM

There's this forest where I live with a mountain in it. I like sitting at the top of it, that way you have a look over the village. It rocks. Always quiet.

Duck-Man Aug 12, 2006 07:09 PM

That sounds like a great place. I live in the city no forests or mountains here.

I too, turn inward for solace. I also live by a lake, and love going to shore to watch the sunrise, it keeps me sane.

The Wise Vivi Aug 12, 2006 09:39 PM

At the University of Manitoba during the evenings with all the lights on around University Centre and the Administration building. It is quite beautiful, and it helps me think. I usualy sit on one of the the benches and stare at the sky and around at the buildings.

Moon Aug 12, 2006 09:40 PM

My "haapy place" is inside my room, lying down on my bed and meditating. Any time I feel stressed out or overwhelmed, I do that and it takes all of it away. Then I usuallly blare some Flashbulb or some good heavy metal at suffiient volume to clean up any anger or other bad emotions I may have missed.

I know what you mean. I have friends living in the city, and all they have is a park at maximum.

I live 20 minutes (with train) from the city, which is nice because there's lots of nature here. I have a lake just some seconds from my house, and forests.

munchkin13 Aug 14, 2006 06:45 AM

My bedroom is my haven because no one seems bothered about coming into it :) it's the one place which i can call my own and I'm surrounded by things that make me happy and smile. I feel relaxed just laying on the floor or on my bed, it's great.

splur Aug 17, 2006 09:24 AM

Japan, in the beautiful streets of Tokyo. I've been twice and I've never felt so free and happy in my life. Too bad my haven is so far away from home.

Rakka Aug 17, 2006 03:09 PM

I find something like peace just lying in bed, with the lights off and no noise or music in the background, wavering halfway between consciousness and sleep. Just me and my thoughts, whatever those may be...and everything else kind of becomes inconsequential.

I find real peace in sleep and dreams, too. Good thing, since I'm a hardcore sleeper...maybe I should have named myself Nemu instead.

There's a country road south of town near the border between Canada and the US border that is deserted late at night (like midnight). I sometimes go there and just pull over on to the side of the road. Turning off the truck provides an almost scary sense of darkness and loneliness immediately until your eyes have adjusted to the dark. Turn around and you can see the lights of the town, look up and you can see way more stars than from in the city. It's a really refreshing experience.

I just went out of town last night on a spur of the moment notion. When I finally arrived one hour later I was in the middle of nowhere at a friend's camp ground. The sky was incredible. Nothing but stars and the sounds of crickets. Everything felt so pure, so unpolluted.

I love nature. n_n
