Suggestion: GFchat button or link

AlicenWondrland brought this up in Eleo's journal, but the site used to have the chat link on the top banner.

http://www.gamingforce.com/forums/jo...t&entryid=9221

Understandably, there is an FAQ for IRC but I felt like tossing this suggestion out there.

Elixir Aug 2, 2006 12:08 AM

There's the ability to do this, which usually brings up java and connects to irc. Of course, this would mean you'd need java already. The problem is, irc sucks in java and you'd have guests joining left right and center.

It isn't difficult to download mIRC and follow the tutorial which was posted here, which I believe is stickied.

russ Aug 2, 2006 01:03 AM

Well you see there sonny, back in the day, the link we had here would open up the little java chat and would pull your GFF username over and use it as your IRC nick, so there was not some deluge of Guest{1:50000} joining. Whether IRC in java is inferior to a regular client such as mIRC is irrelevant.

I mean gosh, even you cannot be so dense as to be unable to fathom a situation where someone would like to join chat, but is, for one reason or another, unable to install an IRC client on the PC he is using.

Sir VG Aug 2, 2006 02:07 AM

We had it before, I see no reason why we shouldn't have it again. It was under Quick Links before as "ChocoChat" or something like that.

value tart Aug 2, 2006 02:28 AM

Yeah, Elixir, ChocoChat was a good alternative for something like a library computer where you really can't install mIRC or run it off of a disk.

My one gripe about the previous ChocoChat was that you couldn't click on links and they didn't wrap around to the next line if they were too long for the window, making really long links impossible to even type into the URL field of the browser. I'd always have to ask for tinyURLs. If ChocoChat ended up with a feature request thread, that wuold be the feature I'd be requesting.

Would I be wrong in saying that you have, in fact, never compared the differences between java and a standard irc client? Claiming that java being inferior is irrelevant is pretty fucking stupid, considering it's true.

Unless you're not on your own computer, bring up the tutorial and use it. It isn't difficult. Just because Alice can't master the basics doesn't mean everyone else is incapable as well.

Basically, Chocochat was there for people who don't want to, can't or don't know how to install and operate a separate IRC client, an easy access app for visiting #gfchat. Them who don't need it, use a separate client, them who do, use the app. There is nothing to argue about it, so knock it off.

Russ, you behave too, you sideburns fetishistic fag you.

Qube Aug 2, 2006 03:27 AM

Elixir, even if it's true that some people should just go through the faq and learn how to, the point here is that it's for PEOPLE WHO AREN'T IN A POSITION TO INSTALL A PROPER IRC CLIENT ON THEIR COMPUTER.

Sorry for that, but seriously, the quality of the client is irrelevent if java client is the best that you can do.

http://network.xelium.net/java/chat.php

There's a friggin link to work with for java irc, but a nice clean chocochat would mean more new people joining who aren't in a position to install new software.

Basically it's for that "unless" situation you speak of.

Fluffykitten McGrundlepuss Aug 3, 2006 02:51 AM

I can't install mIRC on the work computers so seeing a chat applet back would be a very welcome addition to the boards. Motion seconded (Thirded, fourthded, whatever).

Alice Aug 3, 2006 05:34 AM

Plus, it's just easier. CLICK. You're there.

Because like Elixir pointed out, I'm obviously an idiot who can't master the basics.

FatsDomino Aug 3, 2006 07:53 AM

It's not so much that, Alice. It's REALLY easy, but if you aren't going to use irc's extensive features and just want it for chatting in one room then javachat is a really good solution.

THIEF Aug 3, 2006 11:17 AM

I mean, I just use Trillian and thats even easier to use than mIRC I feel. You can also see smilies and click directly on links.

No <3 from Merv...;_;

Little Shithead Aug 3, 2006 11:47 AM

Hey, if we can't see :tpg: in IRC, neither can you!

Get this LMAO shit out of my IRC

FatsDomino Aug 3, 2006 01:08 PM

Oh we have alternate ways of creating TPG in irc.

Code:

              ,,::::::::::::::::,,,,

The fact that it´s true doesn´t make it relevant to the conversation. It just makes you a smartass.

The first thing I noticed when I came back was the lack of the ol´ chat button. I´m going to be posting from several internet cafes for the time being, mIRC is not an option, so I´d like to see the return of this feature. Damn it bobo.

Yes! You're right! A better idea is not to tell anyone and have the feature implemented into the forum, so that people can bitch about it being there, rather than it not.

Nothing gets by you.

Such a Lust for Revenge! Aug 3, 2006 04:44 PM

Why would people bitch about it being there? Or would you complain about it?

I don´t really think Gamingforce needs you or anyone else to tell them that mIRC is superior to that cheesy java chat client. We all pretty much have that figured out, buddy.

FatsDomino Aug 3, 2006 04:45 PM

Dude, Elixir. Quit it. Now. There is absolutely no reason to get worked up over this.

Shut up. Really, it's a feature that if you don't want to use, you can ignore it!

Sheesh, some of us don't want to fag up our computers with another program. Some of us can't. And if you don't want to use a Java based client, IGNORE THE FREAKEN BUTTON AND USE MIRC.

Sheesh, just because you think mIRC is the bestest program in the world doesn't mean you can shove your beliefs down everybody else's throat. Who do you think you are? Mel Gibson?

I'm in favor of the link added to the Quick Links section. Add it please bobo!

You know, I did give links to multiple irc clients, not solely mIRC itself. =/

I don't favor a single irc client as they all have their faults, it's just that the general concensus tends to use mIRC. Clients such as BitchX lack indepth scripting, Trillian's irc chews through ram (akin to java), mIRC constantly has exploits. It's not like there's a certain client which is void of all issues.

I'm just sayin'

So why are you bitching about a general covenience now.

There are legitimate reasons to having an embedded java IRC client, you know. Maybe if you weren't acting so retarded, you would understand this. I mean, even I've used the java IRC client before.

At the very least, we should have a link to the java chat on the Xelium Network's site.

RacinReaver Aug 3, 2006 07:35 PM

I think the link was taken out at one point because the java chat program was broken somehow. I remember because I tried to log in with it from a few computer clusters but could never connect.

YO PITTSBURGH MIKE HERE Aug 4, 2006 03:41 AM

Just make a link to this page http://network.xelium.net/java/chat.php and instruct users to type /j gfchat. It would be really easy to implement. Hell, I'll code it for you!

Code:

[url=http://network.xelium.net/java/chat.php]Java ChocoChat[/ url]
