Manhogan Fantasy V: Because CHz really, really hates himself
All right assholes, check it. Skills and I are going to play Final Fantasy V in an incredibly idiotic way, and you're invited to join in.
http://quiteajolt.com/gff/FFVFJF2013.png If you haven't heard of it before, the Four Job Fiesta is a hilarious for-charity mass challenge play of FFV that anyone can sign up for. The gimmick is that a Twitter bot assigns you a random job at four points through the game, and you can only use the jobs it's given you. So if the first job it gives you is White Mage, you have to use four of them until you get another job. Crying is a free action. Skills and I were going to enter, but we found a critical flaw with the process: it's possible that the random jobs might accidentally be useful. If the point is hilarity, then we might as well just choose the worst jobs ahead of time and ensure failure. So here's what we're going to run:
~~~~~ Now, how are you involved in this, dear reader? There are two routes available to you. Paco Mode: In this mode, your participation is limited to laughing at our plight as we post updates on how we're doing and what killed us this time. We exist for your amusement. I'm Not a Worthless Shitgolem Mode: In this mode, you play along with us because you're awesome like that. I've uploaded the GBA ROM I'll be using, already patched, so just click this enormous hyperlink to get it for yourself. Either way, have fun! =D ~~~~~ RUN LIST:
|
Welp. I've never finished FFV but I'll be damned if I'm going to stand around idly when I could do something stupid and masochistic instead.
You know I'm in. |
We are so fucked.
|
Oh, I just realized that I forgot to explain what I meant by the ROM being "already patched." The ROM I uploaded is the European version of the game with the musicfix patch applied, so the instrument quality is better and the music-related slowdown is almost entirely gone. It's nothing major and doesn't affect the challenge, so feel free to play whatever version of the game you want. It's just there for convenience.
|
Let's do this, assholes. <3 Gonna just roll with what the Autobot (hah) gives me.
Contemplating either Natural or Random Mode on my run as well. I haven't beaten this game before, so I'm not sure yet. Will decide though by the time I get to the Wind Crystal. ...Speaking of which, my Wind Job is Thief. ...Fuck. |
I haven't played through FFV yet, but i also don't hate myself. Thusly, i will play along, but without putting myself through unnecessary pain and torment.
That sort of stuff is best left to the professionals. |
http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv001@2x.png
AWWW YEAH LET'S ROCK AND ROLL http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv007@2x.png Now, I'm not a Japanese language originalist at all, and I'll happily use the localized names 99% of the time. But for this game, the original Japanese name of the main character is so, so superior that I can't not use it. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv011@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv012@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv013@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv014@2x.png And we're off! |
When something smells...
|
Did you fools even donate?
Also, I'm in. Gonna do the normal run with no restriction. I played FFV in college and I'm due for a re-run. Check out my journal to help me name my characters for my run. AWWW YIS Here are my jobs below: 1. Theif |
I never played FFV so fuck it, why not. Might go for the PSP version for convenience.
Although thinking about it, I might actually have a PSOne disc with it on already... |
Zomg, naming chracters is the best part of old school RPGs. GOD I HATE LIFE :(
It's fine, nothing would be able to top CHz's fucking Earthbound Zeal rename run anyway.
"...Halo 3's miraculous power" ahahahaha never going to stop being great |
This guy is a total joke. Gotta enjoy the Freelancers while I still have them, because after this battle finishes in thirty seconds this game is going to get much, much worse. :( http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv020@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv025@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv026@2x.png I THINK THESE CRYSTALS ARE DEFECTIVE, CAN I GET A REFUND PLEASE http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv028@2x.png The Tule weapon shop is the first sign that I've made a terrible, terrible decision. The weapon classes they stock are sword, rod, and staff. Thieves can only equip knives. This means that the only two knife-class weapons I have available are the ones two of my characters started off with, and two of my dudes have to go unarmed. My shit is so fucked, you guys. By the way Skills, as a friendly piece of advice, make sure you buy like 30 potions before you leave Tule. THIS IS NOT A JOKE http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv029@2x.png Karlabos is not terribly difficult. Would've been easier with magic, but the physical damage of the two weapons I have were enough to beat it. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv030@2x.png My first encounter in the Ship Graveyard gave me two daggers. This is one of the luckiest breaks I've ever had in the history of gaming. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv031@2x.png SIREN WAS SO HARD JESUS. Without magic you basically can't damage the undead form, so you have to spend the normal form recklessly attacking at every opportunity and the undead form spamming potions to recover from her nasty physical attacks. Did it without anyone dying, but I used literally 20 potions during this battle. My shit is so, so fucked, you guys. |
I'm looking forward to the pain.
[ 22:49:01 ] [ @CHz ] Okay, let's see if I can take Shiva with level 10 Thieves.
[ 22:49:14 ] [ +Tritoch ] Believe in yourself [ 22:49:43 ] [ @CHz ] How hard could this possibly be without fire spells? [ 22:50:48 ] [ +Garr ] dis gon be gud [ 22:50:55 ] [ @CHz ] ^ [ 22:52:02 ] [ @CHz ] This fight is 100% completely pointless because I'm not going to be able to summon anything. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv032@2x.png
The Carwen weapon shop sells daggers. Thanks a lot, assholes, I really need these now. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv033@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv034@2x.png I left Carwen with 30 potions, and I had 14 left before trying this fight for the first time. Turns out that 14 is not enough! I was doing okay until Magissa drained Lenna for 184 HP. Lenna only has 147 HP max, so she somehow drained HP out of her even after she was dead. I had some phoenix downs and could've kept going, but I decided to just take the game over and go back for leveling and more potions. Especially since those 184 HP Magissa recovered were like four turns' worth of damage. D: I went back to Carwen to get a million more potions, and in the process I leveled up twice (8 -> 10). That made a bigger difference than the potions, because it tripled my damage output per turn. Took them down the second time without much trouble. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv035@2x.png The first benefit from Thieves, and probably the only one I'll ever get, comes in Walse. The Flee command makes it really easy to escape from the Jackanapes in the basement, so with three or four phoenix downs you can grab the amazing Elven Mantle. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv036@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv037@2x.png See Diss's post directly above. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv038@2x.png OH MAN OBSESSIVELY CHECKING THE BESTIARY AFTER EVERY NEW ENCOUNTER PAID OFF, I NEED NEW WEAPONS LIKE YOU WOULDN'T BELIEVE http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv039@2x.png SON OF A BITCH |
Alright, Grundl and company have made it through Tule and the Wind Shrine with minimal incident, let's see what we get...
Additional Spam: Hahahaha I keep forgetting the rest of the forums don't have dice. Regardless, purple d6 on my desk says all-White-Mage-party is a go. I get the impression it could be a lot worse. |
I rolled a one so Knights. My first ever time playing this might not be so bad as it could have been...
|
|
Yeah, Siren wasn't much of a challenge for level nine knights.
|
Dice rollers... bah who needs those. Not when you have the best decision maker you could possibly want right here.
Alright let's just type six jobs in there... http://i.imgur.com/lhWvuo4.gif and press that magical button:
Well I guess we can get this thing crackalackin... Join me while I stream this bullshit and play through FFV for the first time the only way I know how. Awfully. CLICK! |
Garula nearly took me down, hilariously low on MP after pounding away with our curly sticks at 20 HP/pop for half an hour. Whatever the water crystal gets me has to be an improvement in damage output if nothing else.
http://www.saxypunch.com/miscimg/272...2.0a%5D_31.png Well. Well okay. I've heard nothing good about Berserkers but I can't complain about their damage output. Hey, what's this? Water tower? Just a bunch of frogs, apparently. FALL LIKE WHEAT BEFORE MY GRUNDZERKING http://www.saxypunch.com/miscimg/272...2.0a%5D_46.png Welp. See you again in like 10 levels, Shiva. Fuck. |
I started this fun FFV run a few days back, and drew the wonderful team of Knight/Red Mage/Bard/Dragoon. Aside from some decent damage at times and my bard kicking ass by singing everyone silly, this party kind of blows. I was super glad to have all my red mage spells like 6 hours into the game, as I knew that class would have little usefulness beyond there. And when I eventually learn doublecast, it will be almost entirely useless since nobody else can use magic. 999 AP well spent!
|
And here's where I left off.
http://i.imgur.com/fJRYDdy.png http://i.imgur.com/0TlPrOI.png Basically only got up to getting the ability to change jobs. As promised here's my group of thieves. If you'd like to watch me play this game poorly, make silly stupid voices, and cough into the microphone a lot here's tonight's stream. Fair warning: the music was fairly loud in my headphones so I kinda unknowingly yelled into the microphone and nobody in stream chat bothered to correct me or seemed to be okay with it when I asked. So yeah... sorry about that. Oh and fuck actual video editing or clipping of stuff. Skip around. I'm lazy as fuck.
|
I take it when you get to change jobs you change everyone to the new job, right? Last night I got as far as finishing the ship graveyard and being about to go and bag me a dragon with no discernible issues from having all knights.
|
Heads up to folks who are running this on their own with dice or ChocoDecide: the fire crystal jobs are unlocked in two groups, so if you roll when they're first available, you'll be limited to 3/5 of the possible jobs. When you roll, this is the full list you should use: Beastmaster, Geomancer, Ninja, Ranger, Bard. If the job you roll isn't immediately available, just wait and it will be.
I really recommend using the full list, because the Ranger has one of the most broken abilities in the entire game. Quote:
You're also allowed to switch your mens's jobs, if you want to mix abilities. Characters don't have to be in the same job permanently as long as you meet the job constraints on the party at all times. (Skills and I are pretty much going to have to do this with our runs. D:) |
Oh shit, a little late start due to some shit this week but IT'S MANHOGAN TIME.
I beat Shiva fairly convincingly at level 14 but used quite a few potions in the process. Didn't realise it was an optional boss.
I should mention also that I killed Magisa before she had a chance to summon Forza :tpg: I should also mention that I called my hero Fartz too. Additional Spam: Escaped the castle with 12 seconds to spare, having got pretty much all the treasure. Was touch and go for a bit, one of my berzerkers missed Iron Claw with his last attack and I thought I was going to run out of time at that point. Chocodecide says Ninja! |
http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv040@2x.png
With four Mythril Knives, this fight was pretty uneventful. His sap counter got pretty annoying, but attack + potions + an Elven Mantle got the job done. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv041@2x.png Gonna try 2 Berserkers and 2 Thieves and see how that goes. I may switch it up situationally, but it sounds good for now. Thief's final job ability, Artful Dodger (agility up), is pretty much the only ability I have available that's useful for other classes. Unfortunately, it requires a million ability points, so there may be hella grinding in the future. I want to slap it on my final Berserker at the very least, because Berserkers are dreadfully slow. Butz is probably going to be my Berserker because he has the highest strength stat, so I'm leaving him in Thief until he gets that skill. We now return you to your usually-scheduled programming of me losing to bosses. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv042@2x.png FUCK http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv043@2x.png Karnak is the first town in the game with useful equipment. Gotta get those axes for my Be— http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv044@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv045@2x.png Oh god damn it. What do we look like, a bunch of thieves? Waaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv046@2x.png HAHAHA EAT A DICK It took a level 13 party and gear from Karnak but I finally completed this almost completely pointless exercise. I get a summon, which I can't use, and a Frost Rod, which I can't use. However, I can sell the Frost Rod for 9 3/8 potions, so in a technical sense it's not worthless. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv048@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv049@2x.png So this boss you would normally spam ice magic, ice rods, or Shiva on. You know, if you were playing sanely. Two characters using potions wasn't enough to keep up with the amount of magic damage this guy deals, especially since he counters all attacks, so I wiped pretty hard. It turns out that hi-potions are stealable from the Poltergeist enemies in the dungeon, and they spawn with 100% certainty in the room before the save point. So I grabbed about 25 of those, leveling up once in the process, and tried again. It was still challenging even being able to recover 500 HP, and Lenna died once, but I hung in there until it tried to counter and this happened: http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv050@2x.png HAHAHA EAT A DICK Victory came pretty quickly after that. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv051@2x.png I tried the castle escape sequence twice, because I wanted to prove you could get every single chest with a Thief + Berserker party. 2 Berserkers couldn't deal damage quickly enough to make it through all the encounters, so I died with two treasure chests and the final battle left. 3 Berserkers worked brilliantly though, and the Thief with the Thief Gloves let me loot elixirs off the Gigases and Mage Mashers off the Sorcerers. I have 18 elixirs now, this is pretty incredible. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv052@2x.png FUCKING GEOMANCER GO AWAY I DON'T WANT YOU NO ONE WANTS YOU |
With Fartz and Faris as berzerkers with two-handed, Lenna as a ninja with guard and Galuf as a knight with cover, I'm having no problems doing damage but healing is a real issue. Until I can tap into a good source of hi-potions, normal potions are woefully under-powered and each boss fight is a case of hammering away and hoping the bad guy dies before the party does. The berzerkers are doing about 700 damage per hit to most monsters and with a main gauche and moonring blade, my ninja is doing about 600 but any status ailments do my team no favours at all.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...egalad-20a.png Yay. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7.../Manhogan2.png Balls. This fight also represents the first time in my playthrough that any of my team have dropped below full mp, when he used magic hammer on us... |
Killed him on the second try, mainly by throwing fire scrolls at him that I bagged in the ship graveyard which hit for well over a thousand damage each.
A bit of talking later and we set sail for fun, and apparently dancing. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7.../stagedive.png Rather than take the obvious route to the crescent island, we do some sight seeing and meet this chap. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nnit/track.png He clearly needs to drop his track or leave forever. Then a subtle clue. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nnit/hint1.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nnit/hint2.png Challenge accepted. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nnit/Ramuh.png Nice robe, granddad. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...it/victoly.png VICTOLY! Actually he was easier than I anticipated, especially after getting my arse handed to me by a bunch of mini-dragons while I was looking for him. Leaving the two 'Zerkers to plug away while the ninja and knight spam potions seems to be a pretty winning tactic, although god damn do we get through some potions. |
Hi-potions aren't available in shops until [GAMECHANGING PLOT EVENT] which is still quite a few bosses away, so you're pretty much hosed on the healing front. There's a single enemy that drops hi-potions, so if you need them I'd start getting really chummy with the bestiary, or checking FAQs if you're that kind of person. I don't think you've reached the place where it spawns yet.
Thief continues to pay off in unexpected ways! (... while doing the opposite of paying off in completely expected ways. :() |
Gonna start my data tonight. My body is not ready. My mind is not ready. Updates to follow...
Level 14 and just got the dragon. Thank god I can speed up the game and do some power leveling. Holy shit having a team of thieves bites... |
Ifrit's Blaze attack is pretty nasty, but luckily my Berserkers were capable of dealing enough damage that I wasted him before HP because a serious issue. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv054@2x.png 22:23 <@CHz> Okay this Protect counter is getting pretty old 22:24 <@CHz> Geomancer is SURPRISINGLY USEFUL in this fight because Gaia has a magic fire attack 22:26 <@CHz> No don't cast Dischord on my Berserkers ;_; 22:27 <@CHz> lawl magic hammer mp halved 22:27 <@CHz> JOKE'S ON YOU 22:28 <@CHz> OH GOD HE'S COUNTERING EVERY ATTACK WITH DRAIN 22:29 <@CHz> Wow I think I really lucked out on getting that done on my first try. So that could've gone a lot worse. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv055@2x.png Ramuh was actually totally easy with all these hi-potions I've got. Beating up old men in forests is my party's specialty. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv057@2x.png When you beat Shiva and Ifrit, you get them as summons immediately. However, Ramuh drops an item, which you then use to get the summon. Since I can't use summons: http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv058@2x.png DISREGARD RAMUH, ACQUIRE POTIONS (if only this worked :() http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv059@2x.png THIS IS GONNA SUCK WITH TWO BERSERKERS http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv060@2x.png I WAS RI—NO WAIT WHAT So the reason this fight is awful is that Sandworm switches between the holes randomly, and if you attack a hole, he counters with the nasty attack Gravity. I went into this fight with two Berserkers, who pick targets randomly and therefore have a 2/3 chance of missing and triggering Gravity. This is pretty much a recipe for disaster. I went in with the two Berserker party mostly for hilarity purposes; I fully expected to wipe immediately, get a game over picture to post, and then come back with a real strategy. The strategy was probably going to involve moving to 2 Thieves + 1 Geomancer + 1 Berserker, KILLING the Berserker before the battle so its random attacks didn't fuck me over, and having one of the Thieves attack from the back row with the Moonring Blade while everyone else kept the party HP up. Buuuuuuuuut, it turns out I had enough hi-potions and phoenix downs on hand to beat this fight with two Berserkers. Between this and that Byblos fight, I've clearly drained all the luck from the world and used it for this FFV session. Hyde, I'm still parked outside the wind shrine. Basically I'm torn between doing this and exploiting the fuck out of Animal Crossing right now. Gonna have to find a balance. Perhaps do Animal Crossing until like 9-10ish and then stream more FFV after that. Also, I should think about using a better microphone. Can't guarantee I won't be coughing my brains out still at times. I really wish it would go away.
Maaaan, but I'm doing FF9 right nowwwwwwww....
I'll just visit this thread regularly for the funny commentary and spoilers (yes I have not beaten this game yet). |
Yup so it took me four hours but I got to the water crystal - which then shattered and sank Texas.
OH MAN IT'S MY FAVORITE PLACE IN THE ENTIRE WORLD I TOTALLY FORGOT I GOT ANOTHER CHANCE TO COME BACK HERE http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv062@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv063@2x.png BRING IT ON ASSHOLES http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv064@2x.png EATING HI-POTIONS LIKE CANDY THIS GUY AIN'T GOT SHIT ON ME http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv065@2x.png GET A LOAD OF THIS GUY, DOES HE HAVE 99 HI-POTIONS I DON'T THINK SO Even on a normal FFV run, Cray Claw and Adamantoise are clownshoes after Byblos and Sandworm. I didn't even need to grind all those hi-potions; I had 4 after the Sandworm fight, and I used 4 across BOTH of them. I'll tell you what I needed those hi-potions for, though. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv066@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv067@2x.png This motherfucker right here. I've been dreading the Soul Cannon fight since I started this run, since without white magic or lightning magic this guy is a tremendous maelstrom of fuck. The main problem with this heap of crap is that the two Launcher enemies inflict the Old status, which slowly lowers the inflicted character's level to 1 and reduces their damage output accordingly. The only ways to cure Old are to use the spell Esuna, or to kill and revive them. However, curing Old only prevents further level reduction; the accrued level drop remains until the end of the battle. As an example of how Old works in this fight, my Berserkers were only doing 174 COMBINED damage by the end of this wipe. Soul Cannon has somewhere around 12,500 HP. So when all your damage dealers get Olded, the battle turns into a mathematical equation: do you have enough healing items to survive the 70 rounds of whittling? 82 hi-potions and 40 elixirs weren't enough. I could've tried the dumb luck method of restarting if I didn't manage to kill the Launchers before both of my Berserkers got Olded, but I don't have time for that. PLAN B http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv068@2x.png STEP 1: SELL EVERYTHING. (Sorry Garr, I'd give them to you if I could!) http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv069@2x.png STEP 2: BE THE FIRST PERSON ON EARTH EVER TO BUY AN ANGEL RING FROM ISTORY. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv070@2x.png STEP 3: BEAT THE SHIT OUT OF SOUL CANNON WITH AN OLD-PROOF BERSERKER. Fucking Soul Cannon, I hate that fucking guy. Almost as much as I hate Geomancers. Their only Gaia attack completely bounces off both Soul Cannon and the Launchers. Useless pieces of shit. |
FinalFantasyBalls 2, The Search for Hi-Potions begins!
Quick bestiary check reveals these little fellas: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nnit/hipot.png Who can currently kill one of my characters in a couple of hits more or less, yay. Luckily they hang out with these fellas: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nit/scroll.png Who drop a lightning scroll, ideal for killing the Corbetts. 45 minutes of double speed farming later, I have amassed a sum total of one hi-potion... Suddenly, all that time failing to get hi-potions doesn't seem such a waste as two ninjas hurling lightning scrolls takes care of the next few fights in quick succession. Also, Faris looks way cooler as a ninja than Lenna, why did nobody tell me this?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...ninnit/ulp.png Let's do this. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nnit/winna.png Throwing lightning scrolls and a coral sword make this a very easy fight. |
MUST BE NICE TO BE ABLE TO DEAL ELEMENTAL DAMAGE
|
http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv071@2x.png
Archeoaevis's shifting elemental weaknesses aren't a problem when you only deal physical damage. 8) http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv072@2x.png Okay let's move on, but first, for completely innocent reasons, let's switch Lenna's and Galuf's jobs and make Galuf the Geomancer. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv073@2x.png Peeeeeeeeerfect. Cutscene time. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv074@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv075@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv076@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv077@2x.png HAHAHAHAHAHA GOODBYE FOREVER GEOMANCER http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv078@2x.png Manticore hits hard, but also dies really quickly. I wasn't able to keep Butz alive, but Lenna was able to maintain her and Faris's HP. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv079@2x.png Purobolos is normally one of the trollingest battles in FFV, because when you kill one, they cast a spell to revive all the dead ones. The normal strat is to use a spell or summon to murder them all at the same time. For obvious reasons, that's not really feasible here. The dumbest alternative strategy, which I used because I'm dumb, is to take advantage of how they don't have very much MP. If you last long enough, they'll run out of MP and won't be able to revive any more. The fact that they won't revive the others if they kill themselves with Self Destruct also helps. Good thing I had plenty of hi-potions and phoenix downs! http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv080@2x.png Titan has the most powerful attack at this point in the game, Earth Shaker. It deals 500+ damage to every single member of my level 21 party. Titan uses it as a normal attack, and once more when you kill him as a final "fuck you." There are several ways to deal with Earth Shaker: steal some Gaia Gear, find a way to get Float on your party, or have White magic on everyone so you can rapidly heal. Unfortunately, all of those strategies I've either missed the opportunity for or were never possible. Soooo, my only options really are to grind up to a million HP or get super fucking lucky. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv081@2x.png If you haven't noticed by now, I'm always trying the get super fucking lucky strategy first. It's worked more often than not so far. =DDD http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv082@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv083@2x.png ENJOY YOUR DYING WORLD MOTHERFUCKERS, WE'RE BAILING OUTTA HERE |
Invisible platforms? Mind. Blown. I fucking hated this dungeon, mainly because I forgot to stock up on potions before starting and tried to make it through with only 31. Used a lot of lightning scrolls. Ended up using a couple of elixirs too... One boss fight later and is it new job time? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nnit/earth.png Maybe not... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7.../nonewjobs.png Or perhaps it is, yay! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...ninnit/yay.png Woot! Chocodecide says Samurai, so I guess I can safely sell those ethers and random chemist bits now. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...oftheworld.png Nope, I'm the king of the world!
Haha, Titan is a total pikey, I basically threw money at him once and he fucked off. I feel like one of Lindsey Lohan's PR team. Edit: Manticore too. Throwing money at things is the new levelling up! |
Zeninage is a super cheap ability. Enjoy your get out of jail free card, man. (Until you forget to check your GP before a boss battle.)
http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv084@2x.png
I guess this is technically a boss. Rare steal of Gaia Gear is possible off this guy, because I really need one now. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv085@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv086@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv087@2x.png Oh god. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv088@2x.png I didn't want this. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv088@8x.png I DIDN'T WANT THIS AT ALL http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv089@2x.png Fled every random encounter like a pro. Gilgamesh battle #1 is also technically a boss battle I guess, but since it's beatable with solo Geomancer, I think it's an insult to actual boss battles to call it that. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv090@2x.png Okay we're back. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv091@2x.png Gilgamesh #2 is the first legitimate fight in this place, and even then it's a cakewalk until he buffs himself near the end, and EVEN THEN it's easily manageable with hi-potions. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv092@2x.png Hey look, it's the undead boss in every Final Fantasy game that you can kill instantly with a phoenix down. I couldn't possibly be stupid enough to http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv093@2x.png HAHAHA I AM EXACTLY THAT STUPID FOR THE GLORY OF WHATEVER THE NAME OF THE PLANET THAT WE JUST LEFT WAS http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv094@2x.png WHAT THE FUCK http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv095@2x.png Okay phew. |
The EPIC CHALLENGE of the game has basically melted away in the face of my Secret Ninja Techniques, slowed down only slightly by Having To Endure A Dragoon, so— not much to report. I'm sure things will ramp back up, but for now all I got is this basic status report.
Not gonna bother with the optional bosses, since all it would get me, apparently, is more weapons. As I mentioned this was my first real attempt at completing FFV. Last time I tried it was a shoddy-ass translation of the SNES rom, prooooobably before I even joined GFF. Don't think I even got to the first crystal. So, now that I've given FFV its due, I gotta say: I was missing out. Yes, it's a JRPG, with all the linear tedium and grinding that implies, but as JRPGs go: not fucking bad. It's not Chrono Trigger (what is), but it's probably become my second-favorite of the franchise, right behind FFVI. It takes the OH BOY, CRYSTALS plots of the previous games to the logical conclusion and gives the future entries the go-ahead to do new things, since it took the CRYSTALS! idea about as far as it could go. You done good, Final Fantasy V. You done real good. You were a JRPG I didn't hate. Might go ahead and get a second run going, see if I can lap y'all. |
Were you playing the game sped up or do you just genuinely have a lot of spare time? Honestly just curious here.
So next we spend literally fucking hours flying around in circles looking for the meteors that aren't marked on the map and I can't for the life of me remember where they were. On route to the last one, we meet up with an old friend.
ACQUIRE ALL SUMMONS http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv116@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv117@2x.png AHAHAHAHAHA HYPERSPEED DANCING BERSERKER ACTIVATE http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv118@2x.png New party config. I decided just now that I'm going to switch the Dragoon around so I can get Lance on everyone. Gonna experiment and see if it'll work as a supplement to hi-potions. I'm not holding my breath, but we'll see how it goes. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv119@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv120@2x.png WELL IT DIDN'T HELP HERE Hardest fight of this run by far. 4 wipes, plus a couple of non-wipe restarts. Brace for words. Each of these assholes uses a powerful, multi-target elemental attack when they have about 2/5 of their HP left. Two of them are reflectable, hence the Reflect Rings again, but two of them aren't. The non-reflectable attacks do more than 500 HP of damage, and the Crystals are FAST, so it's impossible to heal quickly enough with hi-potions. The Crystals don't have a whole lot of HP compared to other bosses, so the way to beat this one is to pile on the damage on one at a time, killing them before they have a chance to do the elemental attack more than once. With a Dragoon that takes two turns to Jump and a Berserker with four possible targets, this is nearly impossible to coordinate. I ended up having to heal the BOSS with hi-potions frequently, just to make sure only one was ever using an elemental attack. I targeted the ones with reflectable attacks first. The reflected spells would inevitably heal the Crystal I was targeting, so it became pure luck: survive long enough for the Berserker to Sword Dance the right Crystal AND have my Dragoon land a Jump to kill it, without the Crystal healing in between. With just the non-reflectable attacking Crystals left, I didn't have to worry about them healing themselves, so it became a little simpler. I got them near the damage threshold and waited for the Berserker to Sword Dance one. Then, I could send my Dragoon up to land the finisher while keeping my party HP up with the other two controllable characters. Jumping also meant the Crystal wouldn't hit the Dragoon, so when she came back I'd have someone who could revive people if necessary. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv121@2x.png Fuck this fucking boss. Probably should've just grinded instead of trying it at level 26. Guess I'll spoiler this too, although pretty much all screenshots from the rest of the game will spoil this part as well so:
Dragon fixed, we join the Navy. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...t/wasgonna.png Was totally going to anyway but thanks for the hall pass dude. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7.../boatmutha.png I'M ON A BOAT. But then... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...ninnit/leo.png
:( Luckily the Navy includes a submarine division but there's no sign of Gilgamesh. There is a tower to infiltrate though so off we go. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nit/ohyeah.png Considering what a big deal of this the training dude in the first village made, this is the only trapped chest I've found thus far. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...ninnit/wtf.png FUUUUUUUUUUCK. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...ninnit/hmm.png Cash Rules Everything Around Me. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nnit/fyear.png Terrible hit rate be damned. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...innit/done.png I only had one reflect ring but Atomos went down without too much of a struggle. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nnit/sonow.png So now we remember the dragon. After a quick visit to the exposition turtle, we find ourselves in http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nnit/moore.png Which lies right next to the forest with THE HIGHEST ENCOUNTER RATE OF ANYTHING EVER. Seriously, it was a fight every four steps or so and I simply couldn't kill things fast enough to stop at least one member of my party getting hit with blind or mini every fight. Oh man, check out this lava here. Normally it would hit all your characters for 50 HP a step, but it's Geomancer's time to shine! http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv136@2x.png This is one of the two or three places in the game where this Geomancer ability is useful! Finally Geomancer, you are earning your keep. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv137@2x.png WAIT I CAN'T EVEN EQUIP THIS GEOMANCER YOU USELESS PIECE OF SHIT http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv138@2x.png LEAVE NO SUMMONABLE MONSTER UNMURDERED http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv139@2x.png Time for another Gilgamesh beatdown. This guy is just having the worst week. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv140@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv141@2x.png Simply the worst. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv142@2x.png Mastered Lance on Lenna too, so I switched jobs again. I would make Krile the Dragoon next because she still needs the skill, but the next fight could be even worse than Crystals, so every point of Strength helps, maybe. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv143@2x.png Reflect Rings on everyone again. This is arguably not a great move initially because in his first phase he uses mostly physical and non-reflectable attacks, so keeping the Elven Mantles on everyone might help mitigate more damage on average. However, in the second and third phases he'll start casting spells and basically kill himself for me, so I definitely want those on. The hard part is surviving that long. There's no real strategy here besides having everyone heal and revive constantly and moving everyone back into the back row when he pulls them out. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv144@2x.png Neat, I survived that long! I honestly was not expecting that at all. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv145@2x.png Now that that battle's over, I'm free to move Krile to Dragoon. This is actually really convenient for some stuff that's going to happen in a minute. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv146@2x.png These dancing assholes prevent me from talking to Thief Faris and Geomancer Lenna, so Butz gets to escort around a teenage girl dressed up in a dragon corpse while they sit on thrones and be all lordly. What a raw deal. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv147@2x.png And here's why Krile's a Dragoon. Although this fight is super easy and would probably be doable even with Thief & Geomancer. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv148@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv149@2x.png All right, what's her face is back, cool. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv154@2x.png
These guys are like Purobolos except even worse because they won't run out of MP. Pretty much the only thing I can do in this fight is count their HP and get really lucky with my Dragoon/Berserker timing. Took about 15 minutes. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv155@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv156@2x.png All right, so now we're going into an ancient pyramid untouched by man for hundreds of years with someone who indiscriminately attacks everything he sets eyes on, someone who jumps five hundred feet in the air on a regular basis, and someone whose job title is literally thief. This is the best team of archaeologists ever. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv157@2x.png Oh, she made it after all. See, this is why I didn't say "GOODBYE FOREVER GEOMANCER" the last time, because every time I do the Geomancer always comes back. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv158@2x.png Please let the demon keep her body please please please Guys play it cool just walk away http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv159@2x.png :( http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv160@2x.png Another boss with magic means it's Reflect Ring time again. She only uses spells that she'll absorb, but marginally healing her is way better than having to heal myself all the time. I've got a Berserker with the Dancing Dagger and a Dragoon jumping with the maxed out Chicken Knife so I'm good w.r.t. stabbing her in the face until she dies. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv161@2x.png The team somehow managed to loot a tablet from the pyramid without Butz breaking it in half with his face or eating it, so that means we get three of these legendary weapon deals. Of course, I can't actually equip most of them, but I can sell the extras for delicious, delicious potions. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv162@2x.png :mad: http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv163@2x.png So this marks the end of Adventure of the Dancing Berserker. While the 4000 HP or so of damage that Sword Dance unleashes is totally hilarious, it only happens 1/8 of every attack, and 3/8 of the time he'll do one of the useless dances and waste his turn. The Rune Axe has a much higher attack than the Dancing Dagger, so on average he'll do more damage with it, even taking Sword Dance into account. Besides, when I really need the extra oomph in battle, I already have a weapon that 3/4 of the time will attack with more power than Sword Dance: the Chicken Knife. The problem with the Chicken Knife is that 1/4 of the time it'll cause the party to flee, and I'd like to earn experience from battles once in a while. But during boss battles when you can't flee: look the fuck out. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv164@2x.png I also grabbed the Holy Lance for my Dragoon. The lance is less powerful than the Chicken Knife, but when a Dragoon uses Jump, attacks with lances get a 2x damage bonus. That bonus pushes its attack slightly over the Chicken Knife's. The last weapon I picked up was the Assassin's Dagger, which has a 25% chance of causing instant death, but I'm probably never going to use it except when it's exploitable. I'm leaving Main Gauches on my Thief and Geomancer for the 25% chance of blocking physical attacks, because I've gotta keep these bumblefucks alive. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv165@2x.png Oh thank god, the next update will have more monsters and less essays about equipment. |
To be fair, having you a short step ahead of me and explaining things is allowing me to progress smoothly without resorting to looking shit up on GameFAQS which always makes me feel dirty. I've been relying on a knight with cover to take hits for my weak-ass ninja when the going gets close but perhaps a main-gauche as weapon two might be a better option in terms of survivability? My samurai has the block incoming attacks skill so he's alright and I'll probably make him the ninja next and keep that skill active.
|
If you can wait until you unlock the first set of sealed weapons, grab Sasuke's Katana for your Ninja for sure. It's like the Main Gauche but with triple the attack power.
If you can't make it that far, the Main Gauche will do in a pinch, but its attack is pretty low for this point in the game and there are some other blocking options that won't hamstring your melee damage: Samurai's level 3 ability definitely, Elven Mantles, and also Ninja's level 2 ability will eat two physical attacks. Main Gauches work for me because those characters would do no damage even with the best weapons, so I'm basically trading their weapon slot for another armor slot. Since the Ninja has the lowest Stamina of your jobs by far, you might consider moving it to the back row and using it as a support character. This isn't a bad idea if you use Throw a lot, since throwing does full damage from the back row. |
http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv166@2x.png
So this is where the game opens up. If I felt like it, I could jump into the rift and take on Exdeath now. But no. I intend to give this game the biggest of middle fingers by beating up everything I fucking can with this godforsaken party. As long as there's a boss I haven't socked in the face, my job here is incomplete. Since Shin's using my posts as a walkthrough, I figure now would be a pretty good time to go grab a bunch of items and summons and do absolutely nothing to advance any part of the story. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv167@2x.png First up is the Magic Lamp from Istory Falls. This thing is going to save my ass repeatedly in boss fights to come. But what does it do? http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv168@2x.png When you use it in battle, it summons a monster. Nearly every single summon in the game, in order. Finally, I have a use for Geomancer's absurdly high Magic stat. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv169@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv170@2x.png Next up, there's this asshole in the Phantom Village. What the fuck do you even get out of this exchange? http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv171@2x.png And how the fuck can you even know that? I have an airship, maybe I took the biggest damn shortcut. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv172@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv173@2x.png Anyway, so this Mirage Vest. When you equip it, you get a one-copy Blink effect when you start a battle. This means that the first physical attack that would do damage to that character will miss, and then that copy of the Dragoon you see there will go away. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv174@2x.png Handy, although limited in utility because the effect only happens once. Well, until I do this. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv176@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv177@2x.png Give her equipment a swap from the inventory menu like so... http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv178@2x.png ... and armor effects reset. Suddenly, my Dragoon is now invincible to physical attacks. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv179@2x.png Went back to the Phantom Village to do some shopping. There's all kinds of useful stuff here for nearly every party build, so make sure to take time when you get here to explore the hell out of it. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv180@2x.png DID SOMEONE SAY MORE SUMMONS http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv181@2x.png lawl Magic Lamp letting me use Bahamut on Bahamut http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv182@2x.png Real talk: this is the easiest time I've ever had beating Bahamut. It took like three turns with my Geomancer spamming the Magic Lamp, my Berserker hitting for 4500 HP per turn, and Mega Flare bouncing off a wall of Reflect Rings. Skills, maybe you were right about Red Mage after all. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv183@2x.png Aw yiss, the ABP Pleasuredrome. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv184@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv185@2x.png Faris seems significantly more excited about this windfall than everyone else. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv186@2x.png Oh and then there's also this thing, which I disappointingly didn't have to murder anything to get. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv187@2x.png Man, second summon in a row I got without murdering. What's a guy gotta do to get his hands on some murder? http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv188@2x.png Now that's what I'm talking about. Had to give my Dragoon a weaker lance because Odin is one of a few annoying bosses that absorb Holy. Odin's Zantetsuken hits every character for like a billion HP, so the strategy here is pretty much to keep the Dragoon in the air and the Berserker at max HP for more than 45 seconds. Three or so Berserker hits, a couple of jumps, and a couple of Magic Lamp summons get it done. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv189@2x.png Incidentally I think this is the first time I've ever beaten Odin legitimately without using the Break instant death trick. Breaking the game sure is neato. |
http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv190@2x.png
Okay, I can't think of any other ways to stall this LP, so let's get back into things with the Island Shrine. Another tablet dungeon means another set of these annoying jerks to beat up. Since the last time I fought these guys, though, I picked up a new toy. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv191@2x.png HAHA EAT A DICK http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv193@2x.png Oh look, it's the boss with copies of itself where only the real one takes damage and every time you hit it it switches places. If you try to take the easy way out and attack all of them at once, they each counter with Frost. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv194@2x.png Well, unless you use the Magic Lamp. The lamp is actually not very useful in this fight beyond one use, because after Bahamut is Leviathan, which Wendigo absorbs, and then no other summons after that really do any damage. All I can really do is keep sending my Dragoon up and hope she hits the right target while Butz charges at holograms. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv195@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv196@2x.png Oh look, it's the part where the party splits up and you have to go down two paths in the same dungeon. The left path monsters all require you to use magic against them, while the right path monsters you have to beat up physically. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv197@2x.png So the right path is obviously not a problem for my troupe, as random outbursts of physical violence are all they're really good at. Well, that and healing Minotaur because he absorbs Holy and I left the Holy Lance on my Dragoon haha whoops Anyway this battle was over in 13 seconds. Chicken Knife, you complete me. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv198@2x.png But how am I supposed to beat the magic side without magic? If you try a physical attack on him, he casts Return, which resets the battle. For the purposes of this fight, using the Magic Lamp counts as a physical attack. As does Gaia. And he cures himself constantly, so bouncing his spells back with Reflect Rings won't do it. He's vulnerable to Stop and Silence, which he occasionally casts on himself when they bounce off my shields. These provide an opening for one or two attacks, but even with the Dragoon in this battle I can't deal enough damage during these windows to keep up with his healing. Other classes could pull it off, but nothing I have access to. Guess I'll just have to speed up my emulator and let him bounce spells off me until he empties his 30,000 MP. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv199@2x.png ONE HOUR LATER http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv200@2x.png TWO YEARS LATER http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv201.jpg Started reading a book. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv202@2x.png Oh thank god. Return only costs 1 MP, so he needs to be COMPLETELY out of MP before you start attacking him. Just because he doesn't have enough MP to cast a specific spell doesn't mean he's out of MP entirely. Luckily, one of his attacks is the 1 MP spell Libra, so you're looking for that to fail. When it does, go nuts. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv203@2x.png Being shanked to death by a Geomancer has got to be embarrassing. Let's see how long that took on the in-game clock. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv204@2x.png I REGRET EVERYTHING |
Even in a normal run of FFV, the easiest way to deal with them is to summon Odin, because they're not immune to instant death so Zantetsuken murders them immediately. Magic Lamp all day every day. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv215@2x.png Last one of these means the last two Gargoyles. Goodbye, old friends. I'll miss you in a way that doesn't entail any longing whatsoever. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv217@2x.png Tablet dungeon #4 boss is optional on account of it being a summon. Due to this guy's propensity to spam Tidal Wave at you, the only way to beat him without magic (besides getting really lucky with his RNG) is to flush 200,000 gil down the toilet in the Phantom Village for four Coral Rings. So if you don't have a Summoner, it's probably best to skip this one unless you have a major urge to waste your cash. However, my policy of murdering everything demands that I show this guy what for. Plus, I'm going to need those rings anyway for a superboss fight I'm going to attempt (and wipe forever on). http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv218@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv219@2x.png Tee hee. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv220@2x.png With everything else I can do now complete, it's back to Kuza to pick up the other nine legendary weapons that I'm never going to use. This doesn't do anything storywise, so since I don't need these weapons, I could've skipped this step and gone directly into the Rift. However, returning the tablets does something important for me later: http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv221@2x.png This guy comes up and hints you that the absurdly difficult GBA bonus dungeon has been unlocked. I'm going to give it a shot along with Shinryu and Omega after I beat the final boss. STAY TUNED FOR HILARITY |
ChZ, in your Magic Lamp instructional picture, I thought you were fighting Shadow the Hedgehog on first glance.
There is zero problem with this. |
So I should... continue to not take care of them... in the same way... that you didn't? That is, in the way that you didn't take care of them, not in the way that you didn't not take care of them, which you didn't, as you opted to not take care of them rather than avoiding not taking care of them. Or, like, you can't take care of them on account of being dead, so I can't not take care of them in that way specifically, but, in general, not taking care of them, sure, I can do that. Cool deal. http://www.saxypunch.com/fjf/p2e4/27...2.0a%5D_57.png Sorry, I just promised a dying man I wouldn't take care of you. I take it there is some kind of official record for most number of times finished FFV in a month that Pang is trying to break here? You're gonna lap me in a day or so at this rate. :)
In last year's Fiesta, someone completed 14 runs, so Pang has to pick up the pace a little bit.
Chapter V: The Earth Crystal
Spoiler:
|
http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv224@2x.png
Here are most of the Rift bosses introducing themselves. From left to right: might suck (#3), definitely going to suck (#4), not bad (#1), probably the hardest required boss for this party (#7), not bad (#5), not bad (#6), might suck (#2). http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv225@2x.png #1: not bad. She casts Reflect on herself and bounces some poison spells at you, and she also counters with Drain a lot. She's vulnerable to Silence, but I didn't need to inflict it (I kept some Mage Mashers I stole during the Karnak escape just in case, but I've never used them). I even forgot to equip the Chicken Knife on my Berserker and still pummeled her into a fine paste without any issues. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv226@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv227@2x.png WHY AM I EVEN GOING TO ATTEMPT THESE GUYS I AM THE DUMBEST http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv228.png whoops i'm a boob and forgot to take a screenshot anyway #2: might suck. This is pretty much exactly like the Byblos fight but with stronger attacks. What I had to worry about here was him using Wind Slash more than once without being able to heal sufficiently in between. At one point I had only my Geomancer alive with about 45 HP, but I somehow survived. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv229@2x.png #3: might suck. Azulmagia uses nothing but Blue Magic, so this fight is really dependent on which attacks he rolls. You'll laugh when he tries Level 5 Death and cry when he uses ???. I ended up with Krile Olded and Butz hit with Dischord so my damage output was awful and this took forever. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv230@2x.png #4: definitely going to suck. Like Titan, this guy also spams the fuck out of Earth Shaker, but when he does it, it does 1000 damage to everyone. If you have characters Floating, he has the additional dick move of casting 100 Gs to cancel it. The most hilarious way to beat Catastrophe is to put a Reflect Ring on a Floated character, because 100 Gs is reflectable. His AI script is pretty dumb, so every turn he'll notice you have a Floated character and cast 100 Gs to no effect. No damage flawless victory for the party. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv231@2x.png Of course I don't have a way of Floating anyone so I'm totally fucked. Wiped four times before working out a healing strategy. Earth Shaker killed Lenna outright, so she just stayed dead. I put Hermes Sandals on Krile and Faris and Artful Dodger on Faris too. Between them, they were able to get three turns in between every one of Catastrophe's, so they were able to get everyone's HP back to max with elixirs before the next attack. With that taken care of, it was just a matter of Butz poking it with a stick until it died. Good thing I've been stockpiling these elixirs. Going to use every single one I didn't use here during the Necrophobe fight. :( |
http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv232@2x.png
There are six of these guys milling around the same area as Azulmagia and Catastrophe. They play the boss BGM, but aside from their tendency to knock your characters out of the battle with Encircle, they're quite easy. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv234@2x.png After you whale on them a bit, they turn into this guy, who is similarly a cakewalk. Much easier than Archaeoaevis. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv235@2x.png Jura Aevis has a rare steal of a Dragon Lance, which murders the heck out of dragon-type enemies. These are more or less required for Shinryu, so I save stated my way to four of them. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv236@2x.png #5: not bad. He knows Holy, which is pretty much an instant kill, but aside from that and occasionally turning your entire party into frogs, he's quite easily murdered. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv237@2x.png #6: not bad, when fought correctly. He has a 1/3 chance of countering both magical and physical attacks with some nasty stuff, and he has some powerful normal attacks too. After a few turns, he'll start charging one of the most powerful attacks in the game, Giga Flare. A book in the library room in the Rift hints you to his weakness: when he's charging, his defense goes way down and he becomes vulnerable to a few more status effects, including Break and instant death. Dropping an Odin on him in this state is instant victory, so all you have to do is heal and not attack until he starts charging and then Magic Lamp him. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv238@2x.png One last Gilgamesh "fight," which only lasts for a couple of rounds before he scampers off. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv240@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv242@2x.png So you get to Exdeath and he sucks more places into the Rift before you fight him. I'm taking some pictures because I don't think it's very well known what happens if you leave the Rift and return to the overworld after this cutscene. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv244@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv245@2x.png LAWL TIME WARP EVERYONE'S OKAY http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv246@2x.png #7: I'M FUCKED. Actually Necrophobe is not required at all, I'm not sure why I thought he was. The main issue isn't with Necrophobe himself, but rather the four Barriers around him, which all reflect disgustingly powerful spells at you. The same problem I had with the Crystals comes up again here: I need to kill them off one at a time as quickly as possible, which is exceedingly difficult with a Berserker as my muscle. The reason I left the Rift to take those last time paradox screenshots was to buy four Flame Rings from the Phantom Village. The Barriers will occasionally toss fire spells my way, so they'll be absorbed and heal my guys. I'm also giving Ice Shields to my Berserker and Dragoon so they'll absorb the ice spells too. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv247@2x.png Still wiped because they also cast Holy, Flare, and Thundaga. :( http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv248@2x.png I beat him on my third try, but only because I got really lucky with their spell selection and my Dragoon's jump timing. I ended up getting her off screen right before they unleashed a round of spells that killed everyone else and would've killed her too. Also, the last Barrier ran out of MP (they only have 300 and cast high level spells), which helped a lot. Even when you destroy the Barriers, Necrophobe himself is not a pushover, because he attacks twice per turn and has a really high offense. Ended up using 10 phoenix downs and 18 elixirs for the whole fight. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv249@2x.png Okay fate of the world etc. Like the last Exdeath fight, he uses a lot of physical attacks for which the Elven Mantles might have been a better choice to keep, especially at the beginning. When he starts casting spells, though, it'll make life so much easier. Also like the last Exdeath fight, there's no real complex strategy here besides stabbing it until it dies. Just had to keep my HP up, because Meteor can very easily ruin my day. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv253@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv254@2x.png Welp Almagested into oblivion. None of my characters have enough HP to survive it, so I've gotta go grind some levels and maybe pick up some equipment with higher magic resistance. Guess I'm not beating the game tonight! |
You can do it, CHz! I believe in you!
CHz, what emulator are you using? I notice you're on a Mac, and the emulator I have for it fucking sucks.
Hard drive died, so back to the beginning for me (haven't made much headway, hence no updates from me here). I would like to finish my run this week, even if its a bit late. |
I use version 1.7.6 of the Mac builds of VBA, which is four years old and still the most recently updated one because that's how Mac emulator development works. http://sourceforge.net/projects/macboyadvance/
But they summon Tunnelers, which I need in order to learn L3 Flare since fuuuuuuck grinding Red Dragons back in Exdeath's castle. NOPE. http://www.saxypunch.com/fjf/p2e5/27....0a%5D_100.png Melusine isn't immune to Confuse and that's hilarious. http://www.saxypunch.com/fjf/p2e5/27....0a%5D_120.pnghttp://www.saxypunch.com/fjf/p2e5/27....0a%5D_122.png And the Red Mage is practicing Doublecast As the Blue Mages slowly get Doomed Yes, they're sharing a drink they call Ether But it's better than drinking alone |
http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv255@2x.png
One of the best places to grind for experience points is in the uppermost room of the castle in the Rift, after Halicarnassus but before Twintania. You have about a 3/5 chance of fighting one or two Iron Giants, which drop 10,000 EXP (divided by the number of party members) apiece. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv256@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv257@2x.png Grinding before and after. Why did I try to beat Exdeath at level 34 with this party what the fuck is wrong with me. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv258@2x.png The final boss has four sections. The middle section is the split in its bottom right corner. It knows the horrible, unreflectable attack Almagest, and you usually want to kill this part first. It's vulnerable to Break, so if you have black magic or Spellblade that's definitely the first thing you want to do. The top section is the red horned beast thing at the top of its back. It knows Grand Cross, which inflicts a random status condition on everyone. Might get blinded, might get instant deathed. The front section is the horned dude closest to Butz. It uses mostly physical attacks. The back section are those skeletons in the bottom left. The back uses mostly magical attacks, every single one of which the Reflect Rings will bounce. Since it's the least dangerous, it's the one I'm going to try to keep alive until last. It's vulnerable to Odin's Zantetsuken when used from the Magic Lamp (summoning Odin won't work), so when it's the only one left it's an easy path to victory. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv259@2x.png Wiped three more times. My Neo Exdeath strategy centered completely around my Dragoon. With the section that casts Almagest alive, the only people I can keep alive are the Berserker, who has enough HP to take it, and the Dragoon, who can jump and avoid the attack. Neo Exdeath telegraphs Almagest by shaking, so as long as I don't take a turn immediately before he signals, the Dragoon will never be hit. Since all of Neo Exdeath's magic is reflectable, my Dragoon only has to worry about two things: physical attacks and Grand Cross. With the Mirage Vest, most physical attacks will miss, and she has enough HP to survive them even when they hit. So as long as I have enough hi-potions and elixirs, I can keep her alive as long as I don't get unlucky with Grand Cross. The Almagest section has 50,000 HP, which means it'll take 20–25 jumps to kill. That's an awful lot of Grand Crosses to survive, but there's a potentially faster way to deal with it. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv260@2x.png Remember when I said that the Almagest section is vulnerable to Break? One of the back section's magic attacks is Delta Attack, which inflicts Break. It has a 1/3 chance of using Delta Attack every fourth turn, and then that has a 1/4 chance of hitting the right target, so there's a slim chance of it happening, but with my Dragoon I can just sit there and wait for it to happen. With that section dead, it becomes far, far easier to keep everyone alive, because his attacks that can do damage are all single-target. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv261@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv262@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv263@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv264@2x.png
IIII'M THE BEST |
So last update we got hold of the chicken knife. Did a bunch of running away at max throttle and took about twenty minutes to obtain the Boss Slayer.
On with the story... Found the old flying boat just in time for Exdeath to do a bunch of this. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nit/101ulp.png And some of this. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nit/102lol.png Haha, fucking furries. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...ogreatloss.png Exposition Town was shit. The only loss to the world as a result of this is the shop that sold scrolls for ninjas to throw. Fartz does not agree and goes postal. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nit/104why.png He steers the airship due north at such a speed we circumnavigate the globe at least five times in 20 seconds. I can only imagine he's trying that trick from Superman where he flies round the world really fast to turn back time. PHYSICS DOESN'T WORK LIKE THAT DICKHEAD. Airship bagged, we revisit some old haunts. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...it/105fire.png Die in a fire. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7.../106likely.png The clues in this game are subtle as fuck. We reach Phoenix Tower and meet these guys. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...107reflect.png With my knight using a Blood Sword and Thief Knife to give us occasional Mug attacks, this is a recipe for the three other reflect rings we didn't get earlier. A bit of farming later we head up the tower. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...t/108bored.png I got another four reflect rings by this point, most pointless bit of farming EVER. I also didn't think to equip any of them so burned through a LOT of maiden's kiss and mallets. Get to the top and... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7.../109dragon.png FUCKING DRAGON. WE LEFT YOU TO DIE BY A ROCK FOR A REASON. Story time! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nit/110yep.png Yep. We bag a summon we can't use and then wait for the dragon to carry us down. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...it/111down.png Fuck. After traversing the tower again, we go to get Bahamut, seeing as how we're in the desert anyway. I had my chicken knife all powered up and I had four reflect rings ready to bounce back his magic attacks. What could go wrong? Well, I could have completely forgotten to equip all that stuff. Still, fortune favours the brave. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nit/112lol.png Not a flawless victory by any means but a victory nonetheless and without using the magic lamp either as I didn't realise you had to charge it up and I was down to chocobos. Danceserker was a bit of a hero here, as was twin lance plus gaia hammer Ninjerker hitting three times a turn. Who wants some next then? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...113getsome.png Yeah, Odin time! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7.../114mortal.png MORTAL KOMBAT! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...115gotsome.png Chicken knife, zeninage, triple-hit Ninjerker and a slightly extraneous Knight get this done in 38 seconds. That CHZ says he's never beaten Odin without using break before suggests retarded limited parties are in fact the best way to play this game. So at what cost these three summons I can't use? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...it/116cost.png Quite a lot... Nothing much exciting in the Island Shrine, except the annoying bird things towards the end until this guy http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7.../117ladies.png Just pressed attack a lot really, he died pretty easily. Time for more drugs. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...t/118mmkay.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...t/119mitsi.png It's a Mitsubishi logo. And with that, we rave the night away... |
http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv269@2x.png
Ladies and gentlemen, allow me the pleasure of introducing you to Shinryu. Here's how Shinryu says hello: http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv270@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv271@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv272@2x.png He's an affable guy. Coral Rings are essentially required to survive his opening attack, which is super unfortunate because it means we can't use the accessory slot for something more useful. He also flings fire (also absorbable by the ring), ice, lightning, flare, status effects, and so on, so it's your choice if you want to guaranteed absorb one element with a Ice Shield or go for the Aegis Shield and hope RNG bestows favors on you. A few of his moves are reflectable, so summoning Carbuncle is a decent idea, but none of his worst ones are so it probably won't save your life. The Chicken Knife is awful for this fight if you're not using a special attack command, because you can flee! Since Shinryu is a dragon, Dragon Lances would probably do more damage than the Chicken Knife anyway. Hopefully everyone in your party learned Equip Lances from the Dragoon class. The easiest way to beat him is probably just to Berserk him, because that way he'll only kill one of your party members at a time instead of all of them at once. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv273@2x.png I gave it a few shots at level 38 for laughs and that shit clearly wasn't happening. I did like 20,000 damage to him one time, that's 2/5 of the way there! To the grinding grounds! http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv274@2x.png By the way, these guys have a common steal of elixirs. Sure beats buying them for 50,000 gil. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv275@2x.png Level 43: nope. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv276@2x.png Nope. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv277@2x.png Nope. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv278@2x.png Nope. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv279@2x.png Nope. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv280@2x.png HAHAHA YUP Okay here was my strategy, to the extent that the word "strategy" can be applied to what amounts to prayer. Faris: Berserker with Equip Lances, Dragon Lance, Hermes Sandals, and an Ice Shield. WILL NOT survive the opening Tidal Wave. Krile: Thief with Artful Dodger and a Coral Ring. Will revive Faris and then probably die on Shinryu's next attack. Lenna: Geomancer with Artful Dodger and a Coral Ring. Will heal Faris back to full and then also probably die. She and Krile are on healing duty for as long as they're alive. Butz: Dragoon with Artful Dodger, Dragon Lance, Mirage Vest, Hermes Sandals, and an Ice Shield. Will avoid Tidal Wave by Jumping. Once Faris was revived, she was usually able to get two or three attacks in before dying again, and the Berserker + Dragon Lance combo would hit for about 6500 HP. Butz jumping would do about 9000 damage, so for this strategy to be viable, Butz would have to survive to jump four or five times WITHOUT Shinryu ever using Mighty Guard, which halves physical damage. So the battle plan was to furiously slam on the keyboard every time it was Butz's turn to get him in the air, all while hoping Shinryu didn't use Atomic Ray (usually an instant HP kill), Evil Eye (instant Break kill), or Roulette (sometimes an instant Death kill), or attack twice before I could renew the Mirage Vest, or do any of the many other things he could do to fuck me over. Eventually I pulled the right random numbers for it to work! Here's a video, you'll notice this one ends differently than the screenshot above THAT'S RIGHT I DID IT TWICE
Now this asshole is Omega. His attacks don't hit as hard as Shinryu's, but he's far more impossible for this party because his evasion and defense are off the charts. Most Omega strategies use an attack that bypasses those stats, like Rapid Fire, or reflect spells at him. I, of course, can't do any of that: Gaia doesn't work, most Magic Lamp summons just heal him, and even my Chicken Knifed Berserker isn't strong enough to dent him. Omega also counters all damage with two attacks, one of which might be Encircle (permanently removing that character from the battle). Oh, and he knows Earthquake, which is a total party kill. The only way I have to damage Omega is equipping my Dragoon with a Trident (lightning-element weapon) and then jumping, because Jump disregards evasion and the Trident disregards his defense because he's weak to lightning. With the right equipment, I can bounce or absorb most of his attacks, and it's tricky but theoretically possible to time my Dragoon's jumps to avoid his counterattacks when Reflect temporarily causes Omega to target himself. With enough speed to keep healing, something approaching a strategy miiiiiiiiiiiiight be possible. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv283@2x.png However, without Float, there nothing I can do about Earthquake. :( With Omega's AI script, the point where he might use Earthquake is too close to the attack window for the Dragoon to be able to hop both, so I'd have to come up with some fidgety, frame-perfect jump timing strategy with multiple characters that manipulates ATB, or abuse save states to ensure he never uses Earthquake. Either way, fuck this, I'm out. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv284@2x.png I've never been to the bonus dungeon, and I haven't read any walkthroughs or anything, so I don't have the slightest idea what the fuck is in here or how manageable it's going to be. FOR VICTORY http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv286@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv287@2x.png Well this seems safe. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv288@2x.png There are three bonus GBA job crystals hanging around in the antechamber, and you get a fourth one for being the end boss of the dungeon. Since that last part will never happen, and I'm never going to use the crystals I do get, I'm not even going to tell you what they are. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv289@2x.png I'm sure there's nothing to worry about. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv291@2x.png I WAS WRONG http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv292@2x.png OH GOD GIL TURTLE So this is an optional boss I skipped in world 2. I didn't even attempt it because it's majorly overpowered for that part of the game, and I had absolutely no chance without grinding for days. With levels in the 40s now, though, this might work. His attack pattern is pretty simple: he just attacks, and when you hit him he counters with two Turtle attacks, which hit a bit harder than his normal attack and inflict poison and blindness. With HPs near or past 2000 and lots of hi-potions and antidotes, I can manage this. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv293@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv294@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv295@2x.png Oh right, forgot he uses Earthquake when he dies. Whoops. Welllll, guess I'll have to count his HP and have someone in the air. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv296@2x.png lawl offscreen victory So now we're down to just one skipped boss again. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv297@2x.png fuck this maze btw http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv298@2x.png Oh boy, another boss. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv300@2x.png All right it's fightin' time http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv301@2x.png Wait you want what http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv302@2x.png So apparently there's a fucking job wall in this dungeon, and to proceed you need a Beastmaster. God damn it, S-E. There are a couple of other places in this dungeon I can go to right now, so I'll check those out first. I REALLY want to poke around in this place as far as I can go, so after I reach the other dead ends I'm going to switch to a Beastmaster for one battle to capture the Behemoth. For purism's sake, I'll make a note where the end of the run technically should have been. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv303@2x.png PREVIEW FOR NEXT TIME: I FOUND FLOAT IN THE BONUS DUNGEON OMEGA YOU'RE MINE |
CHz, I can't believe you beat the game with level 36 characters. I got to Neo ExDeath last night and wiped twice before giving up at 5:30 am (got a random bonus and bought games on steam and whynotbingegaming) falling asleep. My dudes were at level 50.
I'm also not using save states. I'm assuming from the posts that you are? |
38 is a little low, but within the normal realm of possibility if you've learned the right jobs. Typically during the endgame, you have a bunch of jobs mastered and use a party of Freelancers and Mimes, which have multiple ability slots and the innate abilities and stat boosts of all mastered jobs. I think the usual recommended final boss level for FFV is 40ish?
Of course, the reason I tried it at level 38 with THIS party is that I'm a total buffoon. http://www.gamingforce.org/forums/im...icons/cool.gif Quote:
But I miiiiiiiiight cave on Omega. |
http://www.saxypunch.com/fjf/p2e6/27...2.0a%5D_17.png
Ayup. Gonna TRY to take on the superbosses this time, but a couple test runs don't leave me feeling good about my chances. |
^^^^^ Omega and Shinryu can both be trivial with Bard as one of your classes if you use the right exploits, as Bard is super broken
http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv304@2x.png Without magic or Beastmasters, the only way for my party to get Float is to confuse a monster that casts it. With the jobs I have, the only way I have to confuse monsters is with Geomancer's Gaia attack Ignus Fatuus, so not only do I need to find a monster to confuse, but it also needs to spawn on a terrain where Ignus Fatuus will happen. The two monsters that fit this category are Gaelicats and Poison Eagles, but I can't confuse them because my Geomancer's level is so high that Ignus Fatuus KILLS them. So that's why I was convinced that I could never get Float. I was right in that I can't confuse any monsters that specifically cast Float, but I was wrong in that there is a monster I can confuse that casts a spell with several effects, including Float. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv305@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv306@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv307@2x.png That spell is Mighty Guard, a Blue Magic spell that gives Protect, Shell, and Float. Stingrays normally spawn on the ocean, where I wouldn't be able to use Ignus Fatuus, but they also spawn in River of Souls B3, a cave area where I can. Wouldn't have helped with the Catastrophe fight, because you can only come here once you've beaten the final boss. On to Omega! http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv308@2x.png Fuckballs. So I'm calling this one as impossible, unless I can figure out a way to get Haste while keeping a Reflect Ring on or have some grand epiphany about healing. My party is simply not able to keep up with the necessary healing. here's way more detail about why this isn't workable than anyone cares about:
http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv309@2x.png lawl check out that zombie with a Reflect Ring, here's a failed strategy that'd work WITHOUT Float if I could Haste my Dragoon. I need to have someone to reflect Omega's Search attack back at him, but my Dragoon can't do it while she's in the air. Soooooo, rather than having to keep a support character alive, I can just equip a Reflect Ring on someone and then have a Shield Dragon in Kuza turn them into a zombie. Omega's attacks will never kill them (since they're already dead), so they'll just be an eternal reflect wall. But of course, that strategy doesn't work because I can't keep my Dragoon alive. 8) http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv310@2x.png Okay, we're back! http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv311@2x.png O... okay? http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv313@2x.png Well I'm sure this is a completely insignificant detail. Fuck this maze. Just give me the thing now, don't make me find the thing I'm supposed to use it on first and come back. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv314@2x.png Found this thing, which is a GBA-exclusive armor that halves fire damage and is equippable by Thieves. I could use this to reduce the damage from Flame Thrower and maybe stand a better chance against Omega. HAHA NOPE NOT GOING BACK http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv315@2x.png ufk dead end already Apparently there's only the one boss accessible without a Beastmaster, Gil Turtle, so this is the pedantic end of this FFV run. I've seen all I can see and fought everything I can fight with this party. However, because I hate the way this place is designed and hate all the worthless treasure chests it has, I'm absolutely going to swap in a Beastmaster for one battle so I can pass the totally unnecessary job wall. Because the way to show my utter disdain for this bullshit is to keep playing. |
Dammit Pang, you officially lapped me.
Well, never too late. Let me drop this right here. http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...ath640x360.jpg So, my final team was: Bart - Beserker Lenna - Dancer Faris - Ranger Krile - Thief http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i2...FUU640x360.jpg DIE NEOEXDEATH!!! DIE!!! |
So this weekend I'm going to stop playing Hotline Miami and finish this. I'll admit the prospect of facing Fork Tower with no magic users has put me off a bit but I shall have a proper go and report back soon!
|
Oh really, Shin? Tell me all about having no magic users.
http://cdn.memegenerator.net/instanc...x/37132774.jpg Hurry up and finish so we can Manhogan Chrono Trigger or something. |
fuck this guy http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv317@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv318@2x.png fuck this job wall http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv319@2x.png fuck THIS guy http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv321@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv322@2x.png fuck this door http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv323@2x.png fuck this statue http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv325@2x.png fuck this guy especially http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv327@2x.png fuck this timed sequence http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv329@2x.png finally http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv330@2x.png All right, here we go with the first original boss of this joint. I'm going into these fights totally blind so this should be good. I can already tell that I'm going to need Reflect Rings for this fight to deal with the Dark Elementals, because I fought them elsewhere in the dungeon. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv331@2x.png I WAS RIGHT Actually this guy really likes to turn people into zombies so some Angel Rings might be better. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv332@2x.png NONE OF IT WORKS Reflect Rings are a bad idea because they only reflect Blaster and Aeroga. Reflecting Blaster is good, but reflecting Aeroga is bad because it heals Grand Aevis and damages the Dark Elementals. The Dark Elementals heal with White Wind, and when they're both dead Grand Aevis revives them, so to have damage stick to Grand Aevis I need to kill one and keep the HP of the other one very low. Bouncing Aeroga doesn't fit into a strategy of controlled damage. ... nor does a Berserker. Might have to kill him beforehand. Anyway, I don't stand a chance here until my people have enough HP to survive Aeroga, which means grinding out the ass. Still probably won't stand a chance afterward, but I won't know until I try! http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv333@2x.png These guys, who spawn in the Hall of Doubt in groups of 3, are my new favorite XP grinding chumps. They leave 7,000 experience points apiece, so that's a whopping 5,250 for every party member with each encounter. The best part about them isn't that, though. It's that they only attack with third-level elemental spells, so with Reflect Rings they literally can't harm you and will eventually kill themselves (with lots of healing and absoprtion). IF THAT OMNISCIENT BATTLE TAUGHT ME ANYTHING, IT'S THAT I SURE LOVE REFLECT RINGS AND EMULATOR SPEEDUP KEYS http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv332@2x.png btw if you were wondering why it's been so long since my last post here's the reason LEVEL 45 NOPE http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv334@2x.png LEVEL 50 NOPE http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv335@2x.png LEVEL 53 NOPE REMINDER THAT I BEAT THIS GAME FIFTEEN LEVELS AGO (38) http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv336@2x.png LEVEL 55 NOPE http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv337@2x.png LEVEL 60 NOPE BUT I'VE GOT ENOUGH HP THAT IF I GO STEAL 99 ELIXIRS I MIGHT STAND A CHANCE HOLD UP http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv338@2x.png OH MY GOD Okay, breathe. In. Out. No video of the fight for two reasons: I totally abused save states to work around some of his attack sequences (I think it's theoretically possible to do this fight without that, but I'd have to be psychic), and I paused every 15 seconds to fuss with a calculator. A full video would've been insanely long and boring. Bartz: completely unequipped, except for an Angel Ring so he doesn't turn into a zombie. I don't want him dealing damage to anything. Lenna: Geomancer + Artful Dodger, Angel Ring, Chicken Knife, Circlet + Black Robe (magic defense) Krile: Thief + Equip Axes (strength boost), Angel Ring, Gladius, Hypno Crown + Vishnu Vest (magic defense) Faris: Dragoon + Artful Dodger, Hermes Sandals, Dragon Lance, Aegis Shield (occasional blocks), Mirage Vest (magic defense) Lenna, Krile, and Faris all in the FRONT row because I needed to do normal attacks with them occasionally. Grand Aevis only has one physical attack, so being in the back row doesn't protect against much. Magic defense is a more important stat because of Poison Breath, Zombie Breath, and Aeroga. The Dark Elementals have 5500 HP apiece, and when they're both dead and you attack Grand Aevis, they respawn. To get through this fight without White Wind being an issue, I had to kill one ASAP and then keep the second one's HP low. That meant keeping track of its HP having my other characters keep it low while my Dragoon jumped on Grand Aevis. Giving the Dragoon Hermes Sandals instead of an Angel Ring was a calculated risk that twice the turns would be more useful than protection against zombification. As long as her HP was over 500 or so, the only way she'd turn into a zombie was if Grand Aevis used Zombie Powder on her specifically, so I only ended up having to turn her back once or twice. That fight took 66 elixirs. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv343@2x.png YEP THAT WAS TOTALLY WORTH A WEEK AND A HALF |
I've just gotten past a couple really busy weeks as well, so I'm picking up where I left off like everyone else.
|
Right, I did actually play this the other day and it was time for Fork Tower
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7.../501letsgo.png Not gonna lie, just ran straight up the left hand side, escaping from every fight on the way. Got to the top with no problems. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...502bringit.png First at the top, you fight the Minotaur. I totally forgot to equip the Chicken Knife on my Berserker so went in with a Danceserker. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nit/503no1.png Minotaur is apparently a pauper and easily defeated by the age old technique of throwing money at him. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7.../504pauper.png The killing blow actually came when the dick cast Holy on us and we reflect ring-ed it back. Noob. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...05holylols.png What prize for this epic floor-wiping? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...6pointless.png FUCK YOU MINOTAUR. The preliminaries over, it was time for the main event... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nit/507no2.png Tried throwing scrolls, reset the battle. Tried using items, reset the battle. Resorted to CHz-brand strategy. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...510speedup.png A rare glimpse of how big I actually play the game with my old man eyes. About two hours later... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nit/509yay.png Shank dat bitch. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...nit/510yay.png FUCK YOU WHATEVER YOUR NAME WAS. With that, the Fork Tower disappears forever. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7.../511noloss.png No great loss. At this point, I remembered that I could have gone to pick up some Legendary weapons two dungeons ago, lol. A quick trip to the castle that for some reason took me an age to find and in we go. Met this dude in there. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...it/512what.png What the fuck? He's a pain in the arse and keeps killing people or would if they weren't all wearing Reflect Rings. Still gets killed though. We pick up a bunch of new weapons and re-equip. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...13overkill.png COME GET SOME. |
http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv344@2x.png
Awwww yeah the path is open, finally I can get back to looting this joint. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv345@2x.png WHY IS EVERY TREASURE CHEST IN THIS PLACE USELESS http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv346@2x.png FUCK http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv347@2x.png FUCK http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv348@2x.png FUCK http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv349@2x.png FUCK http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv350@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv351@2x.png ... ooh? http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv352@2x.png Ahahahahahaha looking at a guide this thing halves all elemental damage and ups physical evade by 10% and magical evade by 20%. THIS IS NOT OVERPOWERED AT ALL http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv354@2x.png No I do not wish to partake in this Super Mario Bros. reference Thanks for at least asking me if I want to teleport though unlike the other warps in this place. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv356@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv357@2x.png If "around here" is ten rooms away like this other fucking lock-and-key bullshit has been then I am going to put out a level 2 warning on me flipping my shit in the near future. Sick of this. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv358@2x.png Ahahaha check out this THIEF job wall. To get past the waterfall on the upper level, you have to flip this switch to turn it off and then B-dash up and around before it turns back on. JOKE'S ON YOU, ASSHOLES, I CAN DO THIS ONE http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv360@2x.png Oh lord another one of these chucklefucks, now I'm guaranteed to have to do something on the opposite end of the dungeon. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv362@2x.png Yo so if you didn't know, this dungeon has even harder versions of both Omega and Shinryu. This is gonna be magical. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv363@2x.png There's a teleporter in this room that's locked like that cave from four screenshots up, so I guess that's what this is referring to. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv365@2x.png GOD DAMN IT I WAS RIGHT I didn't take a screenshot, but in one of the first rooms in this place, there's a monster locked in a cell. So, of course, guess where I have to go next. Note: it's the opposite direction he wants me to go, because fuck this guy right in his stupid fucking face. Here's the most accurate summary of this dungeon I can think of:
Next up on my inaugural Fuck This Dungeon Tour: this door! http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv369@2x.png Leads to the Tomb of Memory area, which uses the pyramid tileset and has a bunch of those Mecha Head enemies running around again. Square-Enix: officially out of ideas for this dungeon. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv370@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv371@2x.png OH JESUS BAIL OUT http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv372@2x.png Cool it's a button, I'm sure nothing bad will happen if I hit it. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv373@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv374@2x.png Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat So it turns out that, when that asshole said "you must defeat he who is locked in the dungeons of the Sealed Temple," he ONLY meant for the teleporter in that room, and Neo Shinryu & Omega Mk.II are accessible without that. That means that, instead of hauling ass back to the start to die to a boss, I can just stay down here and die to a boss. Cool, I guess? http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv375@2x.png Cool, it's another button right next to an open pit. I'm sure nothing bad wi— http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv376@2x.png WHGARBLRBRBLHRB http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv377@2x.png Aaaaaand, scene! http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv378@2x.png Neo Shinryu! I already beat Shinryu, and I've gained 17 levels since then, so this won't be so bad. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv379@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv380@2x.png http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv381@2x.png I WAS WRONG, SHINRYU LEARNED EARTHQUAKE Lemme go grab Float off a Stingray and I'll be right back. http://quiteajolt.com/gff/fffuck/ffv382@2x.png Jiminy. I gave it a shot with my Shinryu strategy of slapping Dragon Lances on everyone and hoping to kill him in 15 seconds, but that's not going to work here. The reason is that the developers have cheated in two ways. First, Neo Shinryu is randomly invulnerable half the time. This is achieved by there being two forms, one completely impervious to damage and the other not, that rapidly switch back and forth without a signal. So 50% of attacks will be absorbed without even popping up a 0 damage indicator. Second, Neo Shinryu has three hidden, unselectable, invulnerable targets. They don't show up in the monster list and you can't intentionally attack them, but random attacks like Rapid Fire have a chance of choosing them and therefore doing no damage. The net effect is that my Berserker will only land a hit 1/8 of the time, so I pretty much have to solo this fight with my Dragoon. But wait, there's more. Neo Shinryu has a 1/3 chance of countering damage with White Hole, which is an instant kill for this party. He has 65,000 HP, so with a 9,999 HP limit on attacks, I'm going to have to land no less than 7 hits on him without triggering White Hole. I might be able to bring that down to 6 or 5 if I get lucky with my other three characters before they die, but 7 is the theoretical target. The odds on that are (2/3)7 = 5.85%. And that's assuming I can figure out how to keep the Dragoon alive during the other attacks. So that's a pretty big pile of shit I've got to figure out how to deal with. ... later! |
With Fork Tower destroyed, we hook up a new ride.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...01swimming.png Time to go swimming, fool. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...02drowning.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...it/603only.png Yeah, and my dick is only ten inches long. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...603getsome.png COMMENCE STANDING AROUND. Actually, forgot to nullify the berserker so spent the first thirty seconds hitting him with the other characters until he died. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...it/604woot.png Pointless new job acquired, we leg it, made it back to the boat with 3 seconds remaining. We head off to the nearest glowing blob on the underwater world map. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...605wellies.png Gonna need some wellies I fear. Pretty easy dungeon this one, more or less linear and no tough monsters. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7.../606fourth.png Wait, what? Fourth? I don't remember getting a third. Lol doing dungeons out of sequence. Anyway, we grab the tablet with no sign of a boss... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7.../607bugger.png Bugger. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...it/608just.png Only just beat him with no particular strategy. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...it/609woot.png More pointless shit and the realisation I totally could have just walked past this guy. Fuck my life. So we go to the actual third dungeon next and man is it a pain in the arse. Thinking it would be easier than the fourth I didn't bother restocking on Hi-potions and came in with about 60. There are high-hp monsters that do a fair bit of damage and doom you which would be bad enough but then there are arsehole lava sections you're supposed to float over only no float so after nearly running out of potions, I resort to using the ninja's escape command to run away from battles with one hp a piece. Got to the end eventually though. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...it/610oink.png A pig? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...611piggies.png Three (little) pigs, obviously. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...612tooeasy.png Insanely easy fight, zeninage and straight up hard hitting get this done in a couple of rounds. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...3pointless.png GEE, THANKS. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...14letshope.png Yeah, let's leave that shit for CHz shall we. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...it/615nope.png Whatever dude. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...t/616ornot.png Hooray for bad guy clichés! Dude goes down pretty quick too. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...8soundgood.png Backrowserker? Ah hell no, Dual-wieldserker with Thor Hammer and Titan Hammer of course. 6,000 odd damage a turn to most bad guys. Beat the tall dude boss easily then got raped by the octopus thing a couple of times. Time for a rethink... |
Also this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...it/128oops.png Might not open that one after all. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...9stillafag.png In the best tradition of jrpgs, Exdeath spouts a bunch of faggy nonsense when you meet him. These games need to give you the option to slap emo fags in the face and skip all the crappy dialogue. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...1210lolwut.png Was a giant tree really the most terrifying form they could think of for the end boss? The world gets fucked, Simon says: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...1simonsays.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...it/1212gay.png Sounds like a gay sauna society or something. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...213getsome.png ROUND 1, FIGHT. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...214doubtit.png GOSH, THAT WAS EASY, I BET THAT'S ALL THERE IS AND THE FIGHT IS OVER. Note the various haste effects rather than reflect, this was a first attempt, I switched to reflect rings for everyone except the berserker for subsequent goes with the zerker still in hermes sandals. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...215obvious.png DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...16flawless.png FLAWLESS VICTORY! Took a couple of attempts, the main issue being the bit at the back casting meteor and killing everyone and running out of all healing items with two bits still to kill. The Fuma Shurikens helped, dealing 7,000 odd damage each time. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...it/12Faris.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...it/12Fartz.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...it/12krile.png http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...it/12Lenna.png Well that was a decent enough game. I'm not normally a huge fan of old-school rpgs, I certainly never got on with FF6 but I think the challenge element of this made it more entertaining that it otherwise would have been. Would have stood no chance without CHz playing it through in front of me, primarily because there are a couple of bosses I don't think I would have beaten without his strategies. |
Glad to hear that the enormous piles of hero corpses I left lying around helped you out.
This guy I went to college with sounds mad about sucking at FF5. Just wanted to share this with all of you that completed the game last year, because you're all winners and I'm proud of you. |
Tell him a British guy you know who finished it on his first ever play through using a randomly generated party limited to four job classes says he's a pussy.
