If Resistance isn't any good, why am I enjoying it so much? I think it's dueling opinions here. I personally can't stand the CoD series, so hey. Halo was cool, but not too engulfing, likely because I never owned it and just played co-op/online at a friend's. So as far as console FPSs go, Resistance holds my attention and keeps me playing. It's a great game, but people are being overly negative for reasons beyond me.

As a game, I'm sure GoW is better regardless of 'genre', but again I can't be one to judge since I a) haven't played it, b) don't own a 360 nor will in the immediate future.

Soldier Nov 20, 2006 01:49 PM

Seems there are already a few bonuses to installing all that OS stuff to PS3. PS1 games can be upscaled to 480p, audio CDs are played in perfect quality, and youtube works much faster too. I'll still probably wait until the next couple of firmware updates, to save me some of the extra work in installing everything.

I dunno, same reason people liked Perfect Dark Zero for the first few weeks, I'm guessing. Because there was nothing else to play on your fancy new paycheque destroying box? If you ask me, there is serously nothing out of the ordinary about it. You're free to enjoy it all you want though. More power to you. The fact that I don't is making me teeter on the edge of returning this thing though. *shrug*.

I'll make up my mind by Wednesday about what I"m going ot be doing with it.

Infernal Monkey Nov 20, 2006 07:28 PM

Haha awesome, someone's already turned the PS3 into the much hyped George Foreman killing grill. =o

Haha, that meat must taste horrible with all the plastic it's cooking in :D But that's hilarious.

Man, I'm going to need a serious crash course on Linux and its respective applications. I've never touched the OS before, but people are already using some cool features with it on the PS3. So far there's an NES emulator, a MAME emulator, Firefox, a faster youtube, PS1 games in 480p, PS2 games in 480p (aspect ratio is incorrect though), and whatever the heck this is.

I'd love to get all this working, but it sounds like you have to format your HD on the PS3. I think I'll wait until I get a larger capacity HD for cheap before messing around with this (unless you can format the 20gb one without losing your savedata).

Inhert Nov 21, 2006 04:58 PM

psp 3.00 update came out today, to go with some feature of the ps3, like remote play, that if I'm correct let you stream music, video from your ps3 to psp or psp to ps3.

but the most interesting feature to me is: to be able to play ps1 game that you bought via ps3 playstation store on your psp ^^

currently the only way to have those ps1 game is to download them on your ps3 first and then transferring them on psp, the psp alone can't download any ps1 on the playstation store for now (this will probably come in a future update)

the first ps1 game are suppose to come online in the playsation store tomorrow (but I think it's only for Japan, I'm not sure if it's for the US)

here is the listing of the games that will be release on the Playstation store tomorrow (well at least in Japan)

Capcom
  • Resident Evil : Director's Cut

Konami
  • Konami Antiques : MSX Collection Vol. 1
  • Konami Antiques : MSX Collection Vol. 2
  • Bishi Bashi Special
Sony
  • Arc The Lad
  • Jumping Flash
  • Hot Shots Golf 2

Namco
  • Silent Bomber
  • Tekken 2

if those really come in the US tomorrow too, I guess I'll probably take Resident Evil to see how this ps1 emulation work ^^

Soldier Nov 21, 2006 05:15 PM

Saw the list earlier today. None of those really interest me aside from Silent Bomber, which was awesome (and I only played the demo). I updated my PSP but I can't get remote play to work. It said in the online manual that I'm supposed to configure the remote play option in my PS3 (under network settings) but it doesn't show up. Is this for 60gb systems only or am I overlooking something?

I have plenty more questions, even though very few of us own the system. Hopefully some of them can get answered.

1. PS3 will only accept Mpeg-4 videos for now, right? Isn't that the format for I-pods? Wouldn't that mean that the videos would be really compressed?

2. What's the best program that'll let you convert videos to mpeg-4?

3. What's the filesize limit in sending attatchments to friends? I tried to send a picture but got a message saying I was over the limit.

4. Will a USB adaptor for standard PC Hard drives work? I've read mixed results on this.

5. What is currently the best and cheapest way to share media on the PS3? Pro Duo Cards (via PSP)? Flash Drives? HD via USB?

6. How many levels is Blast Factor, and how long is that $7.99 price going to last?

And finally, Sony responds to the downscaling fiasco.

CEA Comments on PS3 Resolution on Older HDTVs

Sony is working on a fix for sets that lack 720p

A number of reports have been circulating on the Internet recently, suggesting that Sony's new PlayStation 3 has encountered problems displaying high-definition visuals on HDTV sets that do not support 720p. Today Sony Computer Entertainment America confirmed the problem to GameDaily BIZ:

"A small number of older High Definition television sets found in the United States only have 1080i inputs for HD signals. Those televisions will currently only play some PS3 titles at 480p resolution. PS3 games render images at either 720p or 1080p for High Definition, and you need 720p input on the TV to play select games that do not support 1080p. This is an issue on the side of the individual television sets, which do not accept 720p input, so when a game outputs an HD signal only at 720p, these select TVs have to display the game at 480p instead."

The SCEA spokesperson went on to assure us that Sony is working on a solution.
At least they're aware of the situation, so hopefully a solution will be available soon (wouldn't the best solution be to include a 1080i option with all games?). Though there's a chance I might be able to upgrade to an LCD that has both 1080i and 720p this Black Friday.

yes because only the 60gb has WiFi (it make you stream music/video wirelessly(sp? XD))

well I'm not sure what you mean by share, but since you have the 20gb version and a psp, I think it would be by pluging your psp via USB(but you said you had problem with that...) I don't know if it work with a usb<->usb plug to your PC (I'm not sure if your PC or ps3 can recognize the other)

btw on the remote play, do you really need to have your router set with WPA security? because I'm with WEP (I know WPA is better but the DS doesn't support it) and would like to know if there's another way...

Blast Factor has 7 "Specimens", which is to say groups of 6 stages with a bonus round after the first 3, and a boss at the end. Each specimen also branches out depending on how fast you clear the stage, for a total of 12 stages per, potentially.

Thing is, the game's difficulty ramps up a bunch. I'm currently stuck halfway through the 4th Specimen. Pretty challenging stuff. A lot of it is a huge rush for a high score, which has a global leader board, with the added option to rank yourself against your friend list also. I'm something like ~300 globally? lol

Soldier Nov 21, 2006 10:09 PM

Yeah, I saw your name on the high scores. I'm currently waiting it out just a little longer until I grow bored with Resistence. Then I can play BF while waiting for the long stretch until May (when the ports start coming). March has Motorstorm, Lair and Heavently Sword (which, according to the Sony Prophet, will "look like Advent Children when finished"; of course I don't believe that, but it'll be a feat if it looks even half as good as the movie).

So the whole remote play thing can only be done with Wi-fi? Is it possible to implement this feature with wireless routers via (yet again) a firmware update?

The PSP works fine with my PS3. I guess a Pro Duo card would be the best means of storage (for both systems). Hopefully they won't all clear out before I set out to the stores on Black Friday.

I guess it's a good thing I haven't seen Narnia yet. That'll be a definite purchase for me.

Inhert Nov 22, 2006 04:31 PM

well I guess the ps1 game in the playstation store was only for Japan ; ; can't wait to try some ps1 game on my psp and on my ps3 later XD

Cobalt Katze Nov 22, 2006 05:15 PM

I don't have a PSP, so... bring on the emulation asap! :(

Also, boo to BluRay not playing in 720p... Doesn't seem like I'll reap the full benefits of the medium until I get a bigger TV :p

Soldier Nov 22, 2006 05:52 PM

Dumb question for someone still new to HDTVs, but isn't 1080i better than 720p, at least for movies?

Cobalt Katze Nov 22, 2006 08:59 PM

It's a higher resolution, but it's interlaced as opposed to progressive scan.

SouthJag Nov 23, 2006 08:25 AM

So we got the PS/PS2 Memory Card adapter in today, retailing for $14.99. Anyone heard anything about the PS/PS2 Controller adapter they're supposed to release? Kinda would've thought that'd be a launch accessory.

Technically, 1080i only offers 540 lines of vertical resolution. Thus, most people agree that 720p is superior to 1080i in almost every case. Progressive scan also offers a generally more pleasing image, especially on LCD displays.

Slayer X Nov 23, 2006 11:05 AM

Rock basically said all their needs to be said in the 720P VS 1080i situation.

As for the controller adaptor for PS2/1 <-> PS3 we know it's coming, we just don't know when. It's too bad that ordinary adaptors of this type doesn't work, but that's because the adaptor will need the PS Guide button in order to activate the adaptor or design a workaround for the adaptor, either way we basically have to sit back and wait for Sony to work something out.

As for me, I'm still waiting to find a PS3 to actually buy, hopefully it'll be easier then finding a 360 was last holiday season. ^^;

Cobalt Katze Nov 23, 2006 03:14 PM

Something interesting I noticed... Gamestop shipped out a holiday add-in in the newspaper this morning, likely for Black Friday madness. In the PS3 section, it mentioned that if there aren't PS3s available, they'll be selling $600 PS3 Gift Cards for when they come in. :tpg:

They also have "clever thought bubbles" of people for each console/game's page...

360: "I didn't know what the perfect gift was, but now I know I got it."
Scarface: "This is paradise, Scarface is in my hands!"
360: "The great thing about the 360 isn't beating the games, it's showing everyone online that I did."
PS2: "I don't know if you can stay up for a week straight, but I'm gonna try!"
PS3: "PS3 is gonna look great on my BIG screen TV ...hint, hint."
Hardware bundles: "In case I haven't said it, thanks, thanks, thanks!"
Used games: "Finally, an excuse to put my homework down!"
Wii: "How do they wrap so much fun in such a little box?"

Inhert Nov 23, 2006 10:12 PM

well I got my Resistance game ^^ and I never had so much fun in a console FPS since Golden Eye on N64 XD let see you guys online ^^

Cobalt Katze Nov 23, 2006 10:56 PM

Awesome :D I'll see if you're online sometime and hop into a game.

Double Post:
Doublepostspam.

So I realized tonight that I hadn't tried out the backwards compatibility of the PSX titles yet... Well damn.

I popped in Vagrant Story, game loaded up incredibly fast, didn't even have to press the PS button again once it switched into PSX mode... The game was extremely crisp (and pixely/jaggy, but that's PSX for you) and I'd have to say was an entirely better experience than playing a PS2 game on the system...

The only common problem I run into with PS3's backwards compatability, is that using the HDMI cable and downscaling the resolution manually still sucks the contrast out of the color drastically. When I switch to S-video (since both are connected to the monitor simultaneously), the colors become infinitely richer and games take up the whole screen rather than having oodles of black surrounding them.

So yes, Vagrant Story is GO. FFT also works great. Matsuno collection on PS3 confirmed. I'll try out some more PSX games later, but for now I'm sleepy from the consumption of many good foods.

Balcony Heckler Nov 24, 2006 07:51 AM

there's mainly one game only that I want to see come out for the Playstation 3. you'd thinkthis'd come out too since sony has a good deal with capcom. who here votes to see XBOX 360's Dead Rising come out for PS3?

D-Shinobi1986 Nov 24, 2006 08:04 AM

I hope it stays exclusive to the 360! ;)

I would also like a X86 compatible Linux on my PS3!

Soldier Nov 24, 2006 02:49 PM

So the PS3 won't recharge your sixaxis controller while it's on standby mode. I learned this myself.

What I didn't know was that you could also use your PC to recharge the controller. Kind of neat.

So did anyone who missed out on the first shipment manage to secure a system on the second? I'm not sure if 100k shipped this week like Sony promised, but there were shipments out (and gone) today.

Sounds like the downscaling problem will be solved by a firmware update, which is a good sign. The question is when it'll be ready (hopefully by the next update around december).

Oh, and...

http://www.redkawa.com/

This'll be the first thing I'm trying out once I get to go online again.

Cobalt Katze Nov 24, 2006 10:24 PM

Impressive!

http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus

Sony put out a huge searchable database detailing exactly which games have issues with backwards compatibility, if they're totally fine, or if they don't work at all.
