By Georgia do you mean UGA or Georgia Tech?
Just curious. If it's UGA, I may have to either watch it on TV or request that my uncle take me with him to see it.

Slash Dec 2, 2007 04:21 AM

UGA

A lot of talk on ESPN though is that either Kansas, VT, LSU or USC will jump Georgia, and with the BCS...ya never know.

Dopefish Dec 2, 2007 10:59 AM

Not being a college football fan, I can't help but laugh at what has happened with the BCS in the last 5 years. Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong, short of every team losing 6 and every team winning 6.

I can understand why they'd want to hang onto the current bowl format (the fuckin' money, dood) but it's a failed system and:
  • 81.2% of 206,420 voters on ESPN.com say the best two teams won't be playing in the national championship (which I disagree with but shows you the absolute pessimism fans have with the system),
  • 85.5% of voters say there should be a playoff,
  • 79.8% of voters don't think it would diminish the regular season at all,
  • 66.4% of voters don't think the non-playoff bowl games would be any less important (and we all know they're not important to begin with, since they never have anything to do with deciding the national championship),
  • 63.7% of voters think a college football playoff would be more exciting than March Madness (which is very astute, IMO), and
  • 58.8% of voters call the current situation a "joke and an embarassment".

Unfortunately, I don't think a playoff will happen anytime soon. Like I said, there's big money in corporations having fans thinking their game is important and I don't think that same sort of thing translates well into a 4-or-so-game playoff.

Pitt's defense, and especially their tackling, was superb. If it hadn't been for a few very questionable calls on offense, this game wouldn't even have been close. Don't be so quick to dismiss this as a complete failure on the part of WVU. Pittsburgh put up their best game of the season at just the right time.

BlueMikey Dec 2, 2007 12:25 PM

Oh, come now. If Pat White doesn't get injured, WVU wins in a walk.

I don't understand why they think there's more money in a bowl system than a playoff. A college football playoff would be insane. It would be as big as the Super Bowl.

Anyway, my final picks:

NCG: OSU vs. Georgia
Rose: USC vs. Illinois
Orange: Virginia Tech vs. West Virginia
Fiesta: Oklahoma vs. Kansas
Sugar: LSU vs. Hawaii

If LSU moves to #2 like a lot of people are saying might happen, Sugar replaces them with Georgia. Sports Illustrated flipped West Virginia and Kansas, but I don't see the Orange Bowl taking the Jayhawks.

What was the score with White at the helm, again?

It's no Stanford, but it's pretty bad. Illinois does not deserve to go to a BCS bowl and they only are because the Rose Bowl is fucking insane.

BUT! It will give the SEC conference more reason to hate Ron Zook! Which is awesome++++!

Trigunnerz Dec 2, 2007 03:36 PM

Go Trojans! Off to the Rose Bowl! I thought it would be Ohio State, but we'll find out in a few hours.

The National Championship is such a mess! I've heard some people say that USC might have a chance at the National Championship. If we didn't lose to Stanford, that might be possible. But since we did, I highly doubt we have any chance of going to the National Championship.

So will it be LSU vs OSU? The SEC vs Big Ten again? Georgia? More time!

IdleChill Dec 2, 2007 04:46 PM

USA Today and AP have LSU at number 2. I'm going to go ahead and say that the BCS will have us at number 2 as well. Two triple overtime losses don't look too, too bad.

NC: LSU vs. OSU.

I'll agree with that, as I never saw a single Pitt game but everyone said WVU would destroy them. The curse of #2.

If anything, maybe this will kill the whole BCS bowl games and start with the playoffs. Hey, you can still have the BCS bowls by naming them on each individual matchup. Problem solved. Also, I'm lowering my number from 64 to 32 teams. People are saying 8 teams, but then that's like saying piss off to #9 and #10...like the top 10 wouldn't matter.

The whole LSU #2 thing is bullshit, they should not be catching such a lucky break like that. I hope the voters do the right thing and give some other teams a chance like Virginia Tech, UGA, or Oklahoma.

IdleChill Dec 2, 2007 08:16 PM

Woo hoo!!!

Harris poll has LSU at #2! We've got the NCG!!! Bring on them Buckeyes!

SuperSonic Dec 2, 2007 08:20 PM

My fox channel is going to hell and I saw Hawaii was in the Sugar Bowl and then it cut off. When it came back on, I saw Kansas had gotten into a bowl. Can anybody tell me what I missed.

Edit: And I just saw that it's LSU vs. Ohio State for the National Championship...goddammit.

Edit: Well, here's a bowl listing:

AT&T Cotton
Missouri vs. Arkansas

Gator
Texas Tech vs. Virginia

Capital One
Michigan vs. Florida

Rose Bowl presented by Citi
USC vs. Illinois

Allstate Sugar
Hawaii vs. Georgia

Tostitos Fiesta
Oklahoma vs. West Virginia

FedEx Orange
Virginia Tech vs. Kansas

International
Rutgers vs. Ball State

GMAC
Bowling Green vs. Tulsa

Allstate BCS Championship Game
LSU vs. Ohio State

Lukage Dec 2, 2007 08:28 PM

kU over Missouri for a BCS game....what a joke.

Trigunnerz Dec 2, 2007 08:32 PM

It's official. LSU and OSU are going to the National Championship. Both LSU and OSU are so ridiculously lucky. Especially LSU.

Well we know that LSU isn't an invincible team and can lose. OSU has a fair chance at beating LSU, though OSU didn't do so well themselves. I'll be rooting for the Buckeyes.

Didn't get a win against a top 25 team, lost the conference, and voted under us in the polls. I'm shocked Notre Dame didn't get in just for the hell of it.

Arainach Dec 2, 2007 09:01 PM

Michigan State's off to the Champs Sports Bowl. I'll take Orlando over Detroit any day. Either way, I'll take a free trip to Orlando to play music at the game any day. I'm quite satisfied with the choice.

OSU vs. LSU will be an interesting matchup. Depends on which LSU team comes out to play.

Before he got injured? I dunno, Arizona/ASU was on at that point.

Additional Spam:
I think LSU wins going away, by like 24.

Line starts at -6.

What a boring championship. Same old, same old, year after year.

xiaowei Dec 3, 2007 01:28 AM

No team deserves a "national championship" this year.

Trigunnerz Dec 3, 2007 03:32 AM

Well either way, this year has been one crazy year. Many "great teams" have fucked up pretty badly. Even if we had a play-off season, how successful could it have been? Teams that weren't suppose to lose lost to unranked teams. A plus one game scenario?

We also want our own bowl games too. So how exactly can that work?

If you had to pick, who would you have sent off to the National Championship? I bet even if we had a plus one game scenario, there would still be a lot of bitching. Team A got lucky and doesn't deserve a shot at the NC because it beat too many unranked teams. Team B should have gotten in, but it played too many ranked teams and lost. Etc.

BlueMikey Dec 3, 2007 10:46 AM

1) Ohio State
8) Hawaii

4) Georgia
5) Virginia Tech

3) Oklahoma
6) USC

2) LSU
7) West Virginia

Yambo. Don't tell me that wouldn't be the most successful 3 weeks in the history of sports.

Arainach Dec 3, 2007 12:25 PM

The Bowl system is ingrained in the history and mentality of Div-I College football. It's not going away. A playoff will not happen, period.

What NEEDS to happen is that the 'Championship Game' needs to be abolished. Send all the conference champions and top-ranked teams to the top bowls and such, and if you REALLY need a National Champion, go back to the old system of the top-ranked one in the AP poll once everything's said and done.

BlueMikey Dec 3, 2007 01:08 PM

But that's the problem. We need, like 80% of people on ESPN.com need a national champion. And the system you are saying we should go back to didn't accomplish that. This system doesn't accomplish that.

There is no bigger sport in the world that doesn't crown its champion through a playoff. Hell, I can't think of a single head-to-head sport that doesn't do playoffs, except maybe Chess.

Just because it is ingrained doesn't mean the people who want the bowls aren't morons.

That would be awesome. Imagine if the NC game was between two SEC teams
