I loved the apple eating in the PV! And I'm sure with the popularity of Death Note, they're going to have Ryuuk make some apperances...from the 5-second flash of his CG self, he looks pretty good.

But of course, the test will be when we can see him for more than 5 seconds.

PS2 May 27, 2006 07:08 AM

Holy shit, this sounds like a great series. I haven't really looked at any good anime in a long period of time, but after reading about this, I definitely want to check it out!

Death notes, hehe.

eriol33 May 27, 2006 07:16 AM

...

I wonder if he will say the same after see the ending.

It wasn't that bad. And besides, he's was only referring to the anime version that comes out in the fall. ^^;

@ ps2 : read the manga as well. At first i wasn't that into the manga stuff til i read this and dgrayman. its worth a shot.

eriol33 May 27, 2006 08:08 AM

I think it's THAT bad. T_T

Spoiler:

I'm curious what happens to Death Note owner when they die. Are they turning into shinigami? or they become god? or whatever? and I thought FF VII had the worst ending.

Spoiler:
does it bother you that much ? lol. Maybe Ohba will leave some extra stuff after the ending for the Anime.

Ryuuku did tell him to look forward to where he's going. No one knows if its a world where Yagami will find all of the people he killed to beat him down. We did see a little something in the beginning of the final chapter. It looked like Ryuuku was there but at a far away distance. Nothing much is happening in the world. But if we are given extra info for the anime version that is good enough for me.

We don't even know what Ohba is planning to release soon. Takeshi Obata will also work on it too.

Thanatos May 28, 2006 05:31 AM

Spoiler:

I like how people looked at Kira as some sort of messiah...

Luckee Cookie May 28, 2006 07:41 AM

Thanatos - is that even a... spoiler o__O" I mean sure you don't find that out RIGHT in the beginning but it's all included in... the first volume :\

chato May 28, 2006 08:21 AM

Ah..its probably because he read my first edited post saying not to spoil much. Such minor detail is not needed in a spoiler , Thanatos. If it has to do with 2nd arc (major spoiler involving a character's death), then yes.

I was thinking about a few voice actors that would fit perfect for the DN characters. what do you guys think?

like Soulsteel mentioned, 108 pages + One Shot Pilot. Also, your avatar rocks.

Dee May 29, 2006 12:29 AM

So far I'm in the 60s and desperately trying to finish the manga. I didn't know it ended at 108.

You can find the rest of DN on http://www.narutocommunity.net/manga/files.php?cat=22

You've got to register but who cares, it's there. :)

Dee May 30, 2006 06:20 PM

Okay, I finally just sat down and read through it all, although...

Spoiler:
After L's death, I just really wanted the series to just end. The arc with Mello and near were needlessly tedious to read through. It was almost as if I was reading The Scarlet Letter or something, simply put, excessively wordy. Everything needed around 50 pages of explanation, then you can see the story progress. It's like, oh, let's read the mind game between Near and Kira! YAY.

I just wanted them to get Raito and just end it all. And Raito just pissed me off, the crazy SOB. I got pissed when the original L died as well, but eh, had to happen. Overall, I really, REALLY did not want Raito to live after he just killed his father like that.

Overall, in my opinion the series is good, but the steam really died down after
Spoiler:
L's death.

Again, too many loose ends and plot holes, although I can't remember the bulk of what I thought of while reading, some things came to mind like

Spoiler:
That FBI dude's girlfriend from like the first ten chapters. Whoops, she's gone!

Obata's artistry has amazed me to no end, and I especially loved it being put in a lighter use, like Hikaru No Go (only 189 chapters, darn!). If you loved this mangaka, consider reading Hikaru no Go, which is still one of my favorite mangas out there.

Double Post:
Oh yeah one more thing I forgot to add after my mini rant on DN:

Spoiler:
Did anyone else think that the author was making it sound like an anti-Christian propaganda? Well, not exactly, but what made me feel like it was is when Raito was dying and Ryuuku told him there is no such thing as a heaven or hell, there is only nothingness. But, many of these beliefs are shared in Asian countries as is, such as Buddhism that also does not believe in a definite heaven or hell. Also pointing out that there cannot be one complete divine judge, like Kira's opinion is no better than Near's.

Actually, Naomi died. Light made her commit suicide shortly after Raye Penber's death.

Casaubon May 30, 2006 10:10 PM

I feel sort of the same way as Dee. I don't know if I'm just a L fanboy or something but I just thought it was dragging on the last 40 chapters. It got better around 80, then it went down again and the only thing that saved it for me was the ending. I'm probably in the minority in this but I liked the ending, maybe because I thought it was dragging on too much. It's still a great manga, and it got me hooked on reading other mangas which I would have never considerd before. It's probably the best "shonen" manga/anime I've seen.

Dee May 31, 2006 12:24 AM

I wouldn't go so far as to claim it as the best shounen manga - the title can easily go towards more lengthy tomes, like Rurouni Kenshin (also an excellent manga!) for example. I felt like a quarter to a third of DN was just tedious, but a good story nonetheless.

soulsteelgray, thanks for the info. I must've forgotten when reading so much text. :P

Casaubon May 31, 2006 01:12 AM

I love Kenshin and it's probably one of my favorites, but I think the first 60 chapters of Death Note are just that good. I was in a bind when I first started reading them, one part of me didn't want to stop and to keep continuing and the other wanted to make it last. In the end I rushed through it faster than nerd and regretted not enjoying them more than I could have. Just everything is so right and perfect. I'm glad the movie is at least focusing on a different ending. Is the anime gonna be the manga exactly or is there no news yet?

Spoiler:
The only thing unknown about Naomi is the location of her corpse . It was that time when L started to fuck up. L also should've observed the team and ask if they had run into something suspiscious. but yeah, Ever since the Yotsuba, he didn't really focus much on Penber and Naomi. Maybe the movies will be a little different..

I say this because Aizawa ran into those 2 and never said a damn word about it.

The anime .... I definately want it to be the same for some reason. I said it a million times, I want the first arc to be a little longer (when L and Yagami worked together). If the manga didn't go as long as the other Shounen Jump titles, they might as well do the same with the DN anime and i REALLY wont mind it since i love it that damn much. It's really up to them..sometimes the anime can be All good til the end.. Look at the Kenshin TV series..wtf was that all about ? =/...

Im looking forward to the OST. Kenji Kawai should work on the anime as well.. If not him then maybe Yoko Kanno.

eriol33 May 31, 2006 05:11 AM

Kenji Kawaii or Yoko Kanno...

I concur. But I dont think their music would be suitable for Death note. Their music much-much fitted for anime with lot of actions (FSN, Escaflowne) while Death note appears to be thriller and detective-style anime. How about Shiro Sagisu?

chato May 31, 2006 05:25 AM

Kenji Kawai will be working on the movie though. Don't think composers would use the same thing.. They can always change up their style. I just want Kenji to use most of the skills he pulled off with Ghost in the Shell Movie. Just not that much. We also have Taku Iwasaki, He's great when he worked on the Kenshin OVA's including ROD OVA/TV.

Shiro Sagisu...? he did a few good ones (EVA and Bleach) but the OST for Bleach is a little on the so so side.. He'd be suitable to do some work with the piano at least.

I want a collabo' for this one..It may not happen though =/.

soulsteelgray Jun 4, 2006 10:46 AM

There was a new DN trailer aired on Japanese TV (?). It's pretty much just a longer version of the previous trailer, except this time there's a lot more Ryuk.

chato Jun 4, 2006 11:06 AM

That was just fuckin classic =]. Ryuuku stands out alot but I can tell that the show stealer will be him.

The way he moves up to Yagami is cool.. Cg could've been better but i dont mind it. Seeing him walk around with Yagami is just badass.

Dee Jun 5, 2006 01:39 AM

Ryuu looks pretty CG-ed, but still, I like it.

L... he's just so bad ass. And hot. :) Love how they recaptured that looking up glare of his.

Wish there were subs. :(

Wow, this is great news for me. I havent listened to Ghost in the Shell the movie OST though. Thanks for pointing that out.;)

Btw, is there any chance Obata will make... omake perhaps? to make a better closing than that crappy chapter 108?:(
