This sucks for people with older HDTVs that lack any sort of HDCP compliance.

So no way of hooking up a PS3 to a PC LCD monitor via HDMI to DVI-D cable then?

Modern monitors are all progressive, and they've had HD resolutions available for some time now. All you need to worry about, since the i/p question is answered, is if the monitor's native resolution is higher than what you're going to set in the PS3's output menu. It's better to have a smaller picture, than one that's cut off the edges, unless your monitor has some overscan controls you can fidget with.

The monitor's native resolution is 1680x1050... so it doesn't seem like it would support 1080 by 30 bloody pixels. Would there be a way for me to tell then which 720 my monitor supported? (I don't want downgrade :()
There's only one 720p, and that's the HD standardized 1280 x 720p. The console resolution set at that will fit fine on your monitor, but since it's not recommended res for the monitor (assuming this is an LCD) you'll see PQ losses.

Still, a much better alternative than buying an HDTV for the console.

That's the word, hopefully it's not true, but from all the display issues popping up (720p being downscaled by the console? 480i/p settings for proper PS2 game playback?) it may hold true.

What causes more chaos and panic in Japan than Godzilla himself?

The launch of the PS3!

Coming to a store near you!

Also, I like how Ken Kutaragi basically got a customer base he'd have a fun time communicating over.

NIHONGO WO HANASANAI!

CryHavoc Nov 16, 2006 02:59 PM

my god...

1000+ people in a single que ...

Why can't i get one :(

DragoonKain Nov 16, 2006 03:01 PM

Are they fixing these issues with the second shipment?

K_ Takahashi Nov 16, 2006 03:04 PM

Dauuuuuum.....

That croud is crazy, if I diddnt know any better I thought it was a croud of fangirls trying to get tickets to a Gackt concert or something.

I wish that there was a live stream at a prior to a release, so we can see what these "people"are doing.

Spatula Nov 16, 2006 03:20 PM

You know, after reading that last article again, I feel pretty sorry for the Chinese elderly people that waited in line. Sure they got compensation of 20,000 yen from the businessmen, about $185 USD, and waiting in line is a pretty low skilled "job" if you will. Even with all this laughing and joking aside, I do feel sorry for some of them that just need that money, and have to bear through the throngs of pushy crowds and the like (and perhaps the bewilderment on the Japanese store clerk's faces as well, lost in language).

DragoonKain Nov 16, 2006 03:28 PM

I believe the correct phrase is lost in translation. Just kidding, but that is my favorite movie nonetheless.

Have a nice fright.

I do have night classes today, but I do have a break before then, so there is a Best Buy and EB close by, I'll see if there are line ups there as well :shurgs:.

How many units are Best Buys supposed to have anyways? 8 per store? Not much of a line up then, unless they're going crazy for the games.

Nope, minimum of 20 $599 versions, and 6 $499 versions. Looking pretty promising. I'm off to go wait in line tomorrow, fuck this tent sleeping.

I swear this is the best time of the holidays, reading and watching all these crazies line up, riot, and pay stupid amounts of money for the big item this year (it was today that I learned that similar madness is occuring for a "Tickle-me Elmo XTREME". Come on now).

My job was well aware of this insanity as well. The "Boss" I mentioned previously caught on that I'd be picking up a system tommorow, and asked if I'd be skipping work. I tried to hold my ground and say that I wouldn't, but get this; she also egged me on.

So, I'm off tommorow. I told them the reason was that I had to take my mom's brother's cousin's dog to the vet ("what's the dog's name?" ".....Sony."), which of course no one believed, but I wanted that to stay on record. It sure is a fun job; she reminicsed about previous systems like the PS2 and SNES (she said she found the SNES educational in developing her little boy's coordination skills, the game in question being Donkey Kong Country), but she isn't willing to shell out the amount for a PS3.

One day left, and you bet I'm excited. However, this news of the downscaling in HDTV's really rubs me the wrong way. If I knew about this sooner, I'd probably put off buying a PS3 at launch and settle for the Wii first. No bones about it, this is Sony's biggest screwup, and they better make sure to fix it with an update (and that's if it's even possible to fix via update) STAT.

To YOUR monitor maybe but that's not universally true. Windows vista will support HDCP content thus some monitors (specifically the Dell 2407 WFP revision A03) DO support that. Or (I don't know if these even exist) you could get Component -> DVI/VGA and settle for 1080i (As the only way to get 1080p is through HDMI).

Of course not it isn't even an HD TV.

Good luck on getting a PS3 guys. Sadly I'll probably have to wait until next March or so to get one. I only had the money for one console this time.:(

Be sure to post your feelings when you start to play it. I'm eager to hear what you guys think being able to finally play it!:)

Spatula Nov 16, 2006 08:09 PM

Well surprise surprise, my local Best Buys, Walmarts, and Futureshops are having their share of the line up of die hard fans. There were about 10 people for each store lined up cuddled up in sleeping bags and chilling out, literally. I like how I asked the girl as I bought some blank CDs how much the PS3 was, $659.99. It looks like they'll start handing out number tags at 7:00 AM tomorrow, so the night owls will obviously have first dibs.

Geez... I wonder if it's just better off for me to wait until February to get one. I'll have a talk with my father when he gets home around midnight or something about what we're gonna do. If he's up to go exploring for a PS3, then hell I'll go at it with him. If not... see you next year, PS3 =\

Soldier Nov 16, 2006 09:15 PM

Maybe not. According to Gamespot, Sony will ship 100k consoles every week after NA launch. Take that with a grain of salt, but who knows.

Pietak Nov 16, 2006 09:57 PM

100k. That'd be fantastic.

My plans for global dominat- erm, I mean getting a PS3 tomorrow morning have diminished. There are already 40 people in line at Circuit City und Best Buy. The only thing that will bring me hapiness now is a surplus of PS3's arriving within the next few weeks, rendering the online auction inflation useless; but that will never happen.

majario Nov 16, 2006 10:24 PM

When I went to Wal-Mart at about 2 o'clock in the afternoon today there were people lining up in front of the electronics section playing blackjack and even brought their own gambling table to play other related games. All together there was only about 10 people at the time, if I had the money I definitely would have waited in line. It was like the PS3 was toying with my emotions saying ,"Get in line you know you want to." Why couldn't PS3 come out a month earlier. T.T

Inhert Nov 16, 2006 10:30 PM

well I called ebgames and I asked them if they have they ps3 for tomorrow and they said they only have some for the pre-order and when I said that I was one of them he told me that there was no problem and could come get it tomorrow XD *me very happy*

If that's the truth well damn I'll just get one whenever the next shipment arrives.

Also, Inhert, congrats!

Pietak Nov 16, 2006 11:33 PM

OH MAN! The Gamespot live coverage is halarious!

"AIGHT! So, this is the most important information tonight. If you got a green or yellow wristband, you go to my left, and.... Hold on, gimme some of that [grabs tray of samples of food], ya'll know this shit is free, so I'll have me some-"

Just hours before their highly-anticipated release, Elk Grove Police investigators are searching for two armed men who robbed a video game store Thursday, making off with four PlayStation 3 game consoles.

The two armed hooded gunmen walked into the GameStop store at 7717 Laguna Blvd. around 10:20 a.m. Thursday and demanded employees turn over the gaming systems, according to Elk Grove Police spokesman Chris Trim. Trim said the robbers took four of the consoles and four XBox 360 systems before making their escape.
internet.

Too bad for the first four people camping out at that store. :]

Soldier Nov 17, 2006 12:14 AM

Getting mine in 8 hours, hopefully. Wish me luck that I A) don't get mugged, B) lose my reserve because someone robbed the store, or C) get a defective system. And also D) Sony updates that HDTV downscaling crap.

Good luck to anyone camping out under the harsh conditions. I wish you well.

incoming "I got my PS3 here are pics" posts coming up.
