This article says you can switch the HD easily, and aparently the instructions are in the manual.

Well, looks like those people were right as mentioned above. Heck, there's even some connecting 3.5" drives to the machine. In the link above there's already mod talk about getting it to work with standard drives.

Here's some additional news in regards to the PS3's Blu-Ray playback for those interested. The machine apparently runs near-silent according to the folks over at AVS, and its PQ (picture quality) surpasses that of another BR player. He has more impressions but I'll just quote the movie playback bits:

Quote:

also i tested today the samsung player with the ps3 with the samsumg 46 inch plasma player we have at work. and i can tell you the ps3 picture quality is far better then the samsung. i am truelly surprised. remeber 8th below is soft looking. well playing the movie with the ps3 it totall renders the soft image away. and show a very natural movie display.not that it will be raor sharp. but natural looking image. how i would expect the movie to look like. the movie picture i was hoping to see.
Quote:

Dinosaurs. ( USA Version ) remember how soft this movie looked. Fear no more the PS3 is here and i have to say.incredible! i mean seriously. the picture quality is so much better now. when i am right infront of the tv. it looks simply perfect. so natural as this picture looks. the softness it is gone. the dark scenes looks perfect. however when i move left or right from the tv. it shows the picture softer. but when i am standing right infront of it. it is perfect. this is how i wanted to experience this kind of movie.
Quote:

Lethal Weapon ( USA ) VC-1 encoded. another movie like dinosaurs that was soft looking.

the beginning. specially there picture looks soft and colors are kinda washed out, after that it gets a whole lot better

it shows 5.1 channel english 48 khz and vc-1 encoded bitrate going from 18 till 25 mps.

around the 30 minute mark the quality really shines. it shows now a very natural color. same as dinosaurs and 8th below. the softness is gone. but only when you watch it right infront of the tv. if you go little bit left or right it shows a more softer image.
Quote:

also 1 more thig. if you have a dvi connection on your tv only. no problem.

just buy a full pins cable that go from hdmi to dvi. connect the hdmi cable to ps3 then connect it to dvi on your tv. power on monitor and press the poweron button 5 seconds and it works. well at least for me
Quote:

also if you hold the PS button on your joypad for 2 seconds while playing a movie you can chose between contine movie or go back to main menu of the ps3. if you hold the PS button for 5 seconds. you go to menu where you can chose shutdown system or change controller input.

also the PS3 is dead silent. i havent experienced any system like this that is this silent. there is no difference if it is powered on. or powered off.(EDIT:ZOMG!)

There's a potential issue I'm hearing about... It was brought up by Jonnyram over on GAF, which is that apparently you can only use one of the three outputs on the system at once. That is to say, if you use HDMI, you use that only. That's a big problem for me, considering that I always hook up my sound outputs to a mixer that leads to my speakers. I honestly had no idea HDMI contained sound data as well, so considering that my monitor has no speakers, I honestly don't know how I'm going to handle hooking up sound while still keeping the awesome resolution...

Soldier Nov 12, 2006 02:17 PM

I kind of doubt this will be the case, or at least if you use a combination of HDMI and the digital output for home theaters. Even if this was the case, a firmware update should be able to fix something like that.

Well, I went through the Sunday ads, but no specials on any of the games. They all sell for $59.99 and most are all available the day of the sytem. I guess I'll head to Gamestop and reserve Resistence.

It's already been covered elsewhere, but the machine allows for a few Audio + Video output combinations. Like SOLDIER said, you'll likely be able to have HDMI handling the video and the optical out going to your receiver.

Edit: Heh, browsing through GAF's HDTV thread, one of the members (CrazyMoogle) mentioned the audio/video routed through different outputs.

Audio is a seperate option on PS3, you can set it to route through:

HDMI
TOSLINK (plug in a digital optical cable in addition to the HDMI)
analog (plug in the normal AV cables to use the audio plugs in addition to the HDMI)

In some minor news, the console supports HDMI 1.3 (or is it 1.3a), even though there are few HDTVs out there that can take advantage of this. Not to mention the complete lack of content using DeepColor.

Well, I was helping out at Digiexpo and for the stage presentations we had the picture come through HDMI and sound from the AV port. Since there are separate settings for video and sound output, it would make no sense to not allow multiple outputs at once.

Soldier Nov 12, 2006 06:35 PM

A bigger issue I'm more concerned about is over wireless internet devices. Since I reserved the $500 model, that means no wi fi for me, since I already use the following for online gaming for my PS2.

http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WGA11B...8&s=videogames

It should work the same for PS3, though a confirmation would be nice.

Also, I stopped by my Gamestop again to reserve Resistence. I'll be picking up both the system and game come this Friday. Fun times ahead.

Spoiler:
The Wii kiosk broke. :( Either that or someone tripped over the cord ("No AV Signal")

Spoiler:
I'll probably "break" our Wii kiosk the same way as whatever happened to that one. Nothing against the Wii, it's just that I can imagine how fucking packed the store will be once we get a new next-gen kiosk in, be it PS3 or Wii. Hell, they still gather around our near-defunct 360.

I reserved the $500 PS3 as well, Soldier, but then again taking a console online isn't a huge thing for me. I'll eventually do it, and when that time comes I'll buy the wireless network adapter for it. Until then, it's offline gaming for me.

Cobalt Katze Nov 12, 2006 08:44 PM

In reply to the folks that pointed out the sound solutions, thank you so much :D

I was totally freaking for a while last night while tired. I'm glad I don't have anything to worry about.

Problem solved, hype back in action ;)

Pietak Nov 12, 2006 08:47 PM

As Friday comes closer, the more I dread the date. I was unable to pre-order the damned PS3, and lines of nerds will be packed at the local Circuit Cities and Best Buys, hampering my chances of getting one. Yes, people are actually going to be blowing obscene proportions of money for PS3's online, as they already are; and you guys are going to post pictures of unboxing it. God Damnit.

On a lighter note, I visited a few stores this weekend and no one had a single kiosk set up. Kind of dissapointing really, I was hoping to check out resistance, and see what the Wii's control scheme will be all about.

vergil Nov 12, 2006 08:57 PM

so many were pre-orded mainly for selling it to the japs or europeans for really high prices on e-bay,my math teachers brother freind said he's buying the one's on the internet right now and pre-orded one too and plans to sell them for more money,i warned him about what e-bay is doing and how hard it is going to be just to find one,so he didnt do it.

500,000 units across the U.S.A....the best way to get one IS pre-order cause its gonna be hella-hard to find one

Pietak Nov 12, 2006 09:49 PM

This is going to be such a trainwreck with Sony. Honestly, all 500,000 units will sell out the day of launch. I cannot forsee any other possibility. And this will only mean that it will be worse than the PS2 launch. Seriously, I think I got my PS2 after calling all my local stores maybe 4 months after launch.

DragoonKain Nov 13, 2006 01:19 AM

Does anyone think this will work? I cooked up a little plan with some buddies so I can get the PS3 without waiting long at all. I have like 6 or so people and we were going to rotate every couple hours. I'm extreme anti-camping, but in all I wouldn't be out there all told for nearly as much as most people.

Anyone think it would work? I don't see why not, unless I'm missing something.

DjMeas Nov 13, 2006 02:05 AM

So i'm planning to camp out on Thrursday afteroon ^_^''

I wonder what my odds are? How many of you plan to camp out
earlier than thursday?

DragoonKain Nov 13, 2006 02:16 AM

That should be plenty early. I'm not one to be politically correct, so I'll just call it how I see it. Anyone who waits out there all the way up on wednesday is a loser. I have more respect for people than that so I assume few if any will start out on wednesday.

DjMeas Nov 13, 2006 10:39 AM

Yea i'm thinking the same thing~ Anything earlier than Thursday is
just too much for me ^_^'' Just too busy!

I'm gonna start scoping out the lines around 3-4pm when i get off
of class on Thursday~ Maybe i'll see some of you guys if you're in
the Long Beach, CA area haha ^_*

I dunno about where you are, but this is extreme here.

DjMeas Nov 13, 2006 12:02 PM

WTHeck!?

That's INSANE!!

Quiting your job and delay your engagement just for a PS3???
Man... And i thought i was being a geek for camping out on thursday -_-''

Long Beach is right on the coast of Cali and Burbank is about an hour or two
away from me. I don't remember seeing any lines at my local best buys yet...
I'm gonna check today ^_^

map car man words telling me to do things Nov 13, 2006 01:05 PM

My mother mentioned news in the paper today about the Japanese launch of PS3.

The 100000 units caused quite a lot of trouble and apparently the black market resellers had hired homeless people to stand in queue for them to get multiple units :tpg:

Mercury Nov 13, 2006 01:33 PM

Wow, mixed up priorities...

This is getting crazy... do you guys remember if it was the same when PS2 came out? or it's getting bigger and bigger with each generation?

Cetra Nov 13, 2006 02:14 PM

The funny thing is people don't realize things aren't like they used to be. In the 'old days' the launch shipment came then you had to wait around a month+ for the next big shipment. Sony is a modern global distributer and they are claiming they will be releasing another 100,000 units per week after launch. Being they haven't said otherwise (and they would have by now for investors) then people might just have to wait another few weeks at most.

Quote:

It was similar, I guess people don't remember Sony only had 500,000 PS2s for the US release as well. Of course they brought in another half a million later that week and it had already been in Japan for a year meaning units were not being split between the two countries. Japan also had near a million units for their PS2 launch. Only having 100,000 PS3s there is going to result in some murders for sure.

Pietak Nov 13, 2006 02:39 PM

Gotta find out if they're going to sell them at midnight, or when stores open over here...

Damnit, I don't want to camp in line like a failure...

CloudNine Nov 13, 2006 02:55 PM

Wal-marts are selling them at midnight. I wouldn't expect lines to be any shorter there, though.

DjMeas Nov 13, 2006 03:10 PM

Just came back from the Bank this morning and i took a look at
the BestBuy and Circuit City near by~ No lines whatsoever!
Thank goodness there are some sane people here lol ^_^''

Even though i'm sounding like a hypocrite since i plan to camp out
on Thursday~ It's going to be late thursday and a bunch of my
buddies are gonna be there too. I'll probably end up playing my Tetris
or Mario Kart on the DS with them and any others in line.

DragoonKain Nov 13, 2006 03:47 PM

Those Burbank losers got kicked out. They deserve it too, because they are examples of what is wrong with the video game world. People have become too hooked on video games anymore. Those are the type of losers that kill themselves when someone steals their special weapons in an MMORPG.

Quit your job over a video game system? Learn your frickin priorities. What losers.
