With the Japanese PS3 launch so VERY VERY CLOSE
Spoiler:
|
Wow, those look absolutely terrible. Seriously, usually Japan has the most vibrant and fun game covers but these are just stagnant D:
|
Saw ads for the system and games in the FutureShop flyer today (naturally, all numbers listed are in Canadian dollars). Apparently they're only getting the 60GB version, and is retailing for about $660 (if I remembered correctly). You can also buy X-Men 3 Blu-Ray for $19.99 with it. The prices for the PS3 games are $59.99, which doesn't seem much (if any) increase from how much newly released PS2 games cost (bit of a relief, though probably subject to change with the likes of MGS4, FF13, etc).
They open at 8am on the 17th, most likely to be a line up that morning! |

Visited the EB yesterday that I preordered the system from. Got it clarified that you don't need to pay it in full to absolutely get your system, just pay the rest when you pick it up on launch day. Also set in stone (preordered) my two launch titles, Resistance and RR7.
It was kind of amusing... the noob clerk to the experienced one: "Hey, do we preorder PS3 games?" "PS3?" "Ye-" "Of COURSE we do, let me bring up the SKUs" (To me)"Alright, that was Resistance and what again?" "Ridge Racer 7" (To exp. clerk)"What's the number on Ridge Racer?" "For what?" "PS3" *me shaking my head* Meanwhile there was some random guy in a suit returning FFXII, complaining that the battle system made him feel like he was watching a movie. And the experienced clerk agreeing, that she hated that. I had half a mind to step in, but thought I aught to just get my receipt and head out. |
Christ, 7 days left. Where's Metal Sphere been?
Genji 2's score is expected, given that it's obviously a PS2.5 title. It seems set in stone that Resistence has zero chance of sucking, which is more notable news, but I'll be checking this sunday's ads to see if any of the stores will sell it slightly cheaper or offer a bonus. One thing I've been meaning to ask; even though the PS3 isn't offering any upscaling for PS1 and PS2 games (for now), wouldn't there be some sort of resolution boost if you're playing it on HDMI versus Component? |
I'm hoping so, Soldier. Not resolution so much as better transfer to an HDTV. Especially since I'm playing with S-Video, I'd certainly anticipate a much better image when I switch to HDMI cables.
And yeah, expected Genji's score also. Same with Tony Hawk P8, though it's unfortunate that the PS3 version was totally skimped on. Guess they had to rush it to make launch, which seems to be a trend with launch games anyways. I'm predicting Resistance will be in the 9's, and RR7 in the 8's. Or high 7's if someone's feeling spiteful that the game plays nearly the same to other RR's. Zomg not next-gen enough! |
Don't worry, they'll make another Tony Hawk about 2 weeks afterwards...
And OPM already gave Resistence a 9. Another question; does anyone know how long the power cord is for the system? I'd like to decide in advance how high I can put the PS3 on my new shelf. |

I saw the BestBuy flyer the other day, advertising the 20GB version for $550 CAD... I immediately remembered that I paid $500 CAD for my PS2 one full year after it had been released... If you factor in the inflation, it seems like the PS3 will actually appear to be cheaper than the PS2 was for the Canadian market... |

I heard it doesn't upscale DVDs either. Would it have been that hard to throw in a Faroudja chip in there? Heck, Oppo's managed to deliver a top-dog of a player for far less than what Sony's asking for. BTW, here's confirmation of the presence of the EE+GS (Dragon) chip in the PS3, confirming the hardware based BC for PS2 games. Though it's been stated that older models would receive a firmware update enabling software emulation after they completely remove the chips from the machine. http://pc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/2006/1111/ps3_37.jpg Here's another interesting shot from the machine's guts. It looks like it accepts 100V~240V, though there's been no official word on it (that I know of). http://techon.nikkeibp.co.jp/article...1111power2.jpg The rest of these can be found here |
Actually, one Sony PR guy (forgot the name) said DVD movies ARE upscaled. I guess you'll just have to wait and try it out yourself.

Some people are really desperate for a PS3:

Have their been any reports of someone swapping the hard drives for a bigger capacity, third-party unit yet? IGN said they were working on it, but have yet to actually do it.
It seems easy enough to open the system from those pics, so I assume Sony won't put that "Void if Removed" sticker on it like they had on the PS2. |
Having seen all the "look at us press guys, we got ourselves a ps3!" videos, I'm not impressed with the Bios menu. It's an over glorified PSP bios menu. I was expecting something more...well, next gen.
|
OMG!!!! did you here the news the PS3 is coming out Nov.17 but there
deleying all the games how stupid! |
Yeah, I don't want you in this thread anymore.

Sonic is getting delayed though, which kinda sucks but I'm in two ways about that. |

EDIT: While trying out the Wii at Gamestop, I got confirmation that it's too late to switch systems, but I'm fine with the $500 model. One thing I did learn, though, is that the only special they're offering is that you get $10 off X-Men: The Last Stand for Blu Ray if you buy it along with the system. A pretty good deal, but I couldn't bring myself to spend money on the most disappointing movie of this year. If it was Black Hawk Down or something better, I'd probably take them up on the offer. Also interesting is that they actually have finished, packaged PS3 games for sale now. The guy showed me the sealed cases for Tony Hawk and Ultimate Alliance. Pretty cool, though I don't quite like the clear Blu Ray border on the top. I was hoping they'd go for the black color scheme to match the system. |
I visited my local Best Buy (after visiting GameStop and EB Games, as an interesting side note) and there it was: the PS3 kiosk. Neither of the major gaming places had it. I discovered a kid playing some racing game (Motor-something or other). After watching him botch the controls (seriously, kids need more education) he handed the control over to me and I promptly won a race and handed off to the next putz in line. A couple of times I heard kids say, "Wow! Look at the graphics!" and I groaned to myself a little.
The graphics are good, yeah, OK, natural progression of computers and graphics told us we knew this would happen. Frankly, I was disappointed. Oh boy! Look at all the parts when my car explodes! They intentionally slow this part down to show you all the parts! Then your car respawns and the framerate is still kinda choppy while you're racing, even if you've got no one in front of you. I expect/require 60 FPS at this point in the gaming cycle and this game doesn't have it. Otherwise it was a fairly generic racing game; no weapons, no powerups, just you, some ATVs, boosting and some decent graphics. |
I felt about the same when I tried Excitetrucks today. In this case though, I guess the prettier generic racer wins out of the two. I'll probably hit my nearest Best Buy tommorow to see if they have the PS3 set up. But I'll be especially paying attention to Sunday's ads, to see if any specials or lower prices occur for the launch games.

Quite frankly, I don't think too many people are gonna be disappointed with the XMB (?) interface, so it's easy, user-friendly, and functional. Plus, it doesn't have "the blades." |

Unless of course you were actually trying a "RE has tank controls geddit" joke, in which case ::tumbleweed:: As for the PS3 HDD, I was told at work that there were already blog entries of people switching their hard drives to a 120GB one, but I have yet to see one. I seriously doubt opening the PS3 will be allowed (still going to void your warranty), but for HDD exchange you won't need it anyway since you remove it from the side. |
Good, no need to open up the whole damn system then. All I have to do is wait a bit for everyone to try the different kind of drives, and then purchase whichever one people recommend the most (and at a good price).
