The art style reminds me of Beyond the Clouds. However, I don't really remember the male and female leads ever being by a vending machine. It kind of happened during the beginning of the movie, but they were at the train station near their school then, and the second male lead was there too.

If it's not Beyond the Clouds, then is it from that guy's new movie, 5 Centimeters per Second? I don't recall a scene like that in Voices of a Distant Star.

Thats right, this is like mid way through the movie not at the beginning though...
