For chaotic, dope, and the others who are having too tough a time here, use that thread.

It's a DOS game which was ported to the PS1 and Saturn.

Chaotic Jan 29, 2007 01:07 PM

As for the whole mainstream thing, I meant just mixing it up a little bit. Not every screen has to be an obscure and rare game. Just post some games so it's friendly for all users to join in. It might kill some of you that some games are ridiculously easy, but we're not all as hardcore as you three. We don't need to start another thread for just the mainstream games alone.

Either way, you can post like 3 obscure games and then 1 mainstream or something. Just mix it up a little bit.

Either way, people have different definitions of mainstream, so the mainstream thread might not even help at all.

Solis Jan 29, 2007 01:08 PM

I believe I remember seeing that in a gaming magazine...Braindead 13? The Dragon's Lair clone?

Elixir Jan 29, 2007 01:11 PM

Braindead 13's correct.

See, now that wasn't so hard after all.

It's pretty hard to guess what's both mainstream enough and hard enough to still be fun for you guys, y'know. We don't know what levels of knowledge you've got, and so on. Some of these in here have been ridiculously easy, (Bayou Billy, for example), and they still seem to ellicit negative reactions.

I don't mean to highjack your thread idea or nothing, but try giving the other thread a chance and see what you can do with it. Perhaps having two different difficulties will allow more people to have consistent fun.

Solis Jan 29, 2007 01:34 PM

Here's another one which is slightly obscure, but if you were a fan of the 3d space shooting genre back then you probably would have at least heard of it. Note that like Another World/Out of This World, it was named differently in each region, either name is acceptable.

isn't star fox on snes??? (it was named starwing in europe I think) probably not but the graphic remind me of that XD

map car man words telling me to do things Jan 29, 2007 01:41 PM

I keep thinking it's that one Namco space shooter but can't for the life of me remember the name.

Solis Jan 29, 2007 02:25 PM

Nope, wrong on both guesses. It does bare a similarity to those games, but it was released a bit after them (I think I remember seeing that Namco shooter you're thinking of though, it was in the arcades in the early 90s, right?). Here's anothing screenshot from the very start of the game, might jog some memories since most people that played it probably didn't manage to get to the level from the first image.

Oh, and on the note of old games, I uploaded Heart of the Alien in ISO/MP3 format to sendspace for you Qwarky (and anyone else that wants the game). I use the Kega Fusion emulator for it and it works quite well:

Elixir Jan 29, 2007 03:02 PM

Wouldn't have a clue. The pictures are way too generic for me to even remotely come close.

Chaotic Jan 29, 2007 04:11 PM

More clues. Apparently I have to investigate trying to guess this. T_T

map car man words telling me to do things Jan 29, 2007 04:13 PM

It's not generic at all, I just can't for the life of me remember the name.

The Namco shooter I was thinking was Star Ixiom for PS1, but this obviously isn't it. I know I've seen this game, I just can't remember.

Solis Jan 30, 2007 12:09 AM

Well it was a console game, which should narrow it down a little since there weren't many consoles that would have graphics like that. It was one of the first space shooters that allowed you to destroy individual sections of capital ships, and had an interesting 2-player mode where one player drives the ship while the other player aims and shoots the gun. It was also extremely short.

TheKnightOfNee Jan 30, 2007 12:15 AM

Okay, think I've finally found it. Shadow Squadron?

Solis Jan 30, 2007 12:36 AM

A winner is you. Also known as Stellar Assault in Europe (yes, wonderfully original names they had there). The system is what made the game obscure more than anything else, it was one of the few good 32X games and for some reason it never got a sequel on the Saturn.

Hah, now who's being an asshole

Duck King Jan 30, 2007 09:47 AM

lol, now this is being ridiculous. Nothing quite distinguishable about it, I can't even tell if it's an actual ingame screen or some cgi intro movie.

That being said, my best guess would be something like Homeworld.

Oh and thanks, Solis, for the Heart of the Alien iso.

Solis Jan 30, 2007 11:01 AM

Hmm, I'm pretty certain it's from a cutscene, and it looks familiar, but I just can't recall what from. The lasers look straight out of Xenosaga (probably the third one), but I thought all the cutscenes in those games were fullscreen instead of letterboxed, so that doesn't seem likely. It also looks similar to Zone of the Enders 2, but I can't remember at what point that would've been in the game. I guess for now my vote goes for ZoE2.

Oh, and no problem Draconis, always glad to help where I can.
