It's been made apparent in recent news that PSP games are going to be part of the downloadable "virtual console" stuff on PS3's network. If they're playable on the PS3 (as opposed to having to download them onto a physical PSP), I will be extremely happy. Because I really have no desire to buy one... yet I want to play Lumines and Gunpey like what.

Freddy Krueger Oct 16, 2006 02:40 PM

Now that would be awesome, then I can play all the great new games like MGS Portable OPs and FFVII Crisis Core without having to buy a PSP

Soldier Oct 16, 2006 04:00 PM

That was the same idea I had, being able to play PSP games on the system. Although if Sony is smart, they'll require you to hook up the PSP and UMD to the PS3 via USB to do so. Still, with the ability to play PS1, PS2 and PS3 games along with Blu-ray movies, PSP games, and a comprehensive OS, suddenly those $500-$600 feel pretty justified.

So what time this Thursday does the gamer's day event start?

Metal Sphere Oct 16, 2006 04:39 PM

Anyone know the transfer rate for UMDs and that of USB 2.0? If the latter is higher, couldn't you simply buy the game in data form, download it to your PS3's HDD, hookup your PSP and play it right off the machine?

Edit: Damn, the PS3's UK site is nice. Here it is.

Slayer X Oct 16, 2006 05:24 PM

If you had a soft modded PSP you could. As of right now the PSP does not allow you to play games off of anything other then a UMD disc. Therefore if it were soft moded, or if Sony came out with executable versions of the games there would be no way to play them from another source other then the UMD.

Inhert Oct 16, 2006 05:47 PM

well I have one ps3 reserve for me ^^ actually I'm the 6th on the list. the only thing that I fear could happen, is that they said that they are supposed to receive 8 consoles but maybe they will have less than that... so if there's only 5 console...I'm not getting one >.> I just hope they will get at least 6, and I pre-order the 60gb one.

they said that they will call me 2 week before the release date to comfirm how many ps3 they will get and they better be because i have a 200$can deposit for that >.>

Metal Sphere Oct 16, 2006 05:49 PM

Wow, lucky you Inhert. Hopefully everything goes smoothly, so you'll be seeing this soon.

It's a video of the PS3's slot loader taking a disc in and ejecting it.

TheXeno Oct 16, 2006 06:03 PM

Downloading psp games you say? That sounds interesting. Hey at least it isn't shooting disks out like the psp..

Slayer X Oct 16, 2006 06:07 PM

Yeah good job man. Did you pre-order any games with your system? Or you just plan'n on picking up a couple on launch day? And if so what ones are you going to get/pre-ordered?

Inhert Oct 16, 2006 06:52 PM

I didn't pre-order any games because I'm still not sure what to take...(and I still not sure what are the launch titles XD)

Resistance look good but I just can't stand any fps on console, I need a mouse and a keyboard to play those games XD, and now that i heard that the game is really hard, I'm sure it's not for me...

I'll probably decide at the launch date when I'll go pick up my ps3, but for now it will probably ridge racer 7 and maybe Resistance I'll decide on the spot and if I have enough money XD

Slayer X Oct 16, 2006 06:57 PM

Just throwing this out there but as far as I'm aware the PS3 has full mouse & keyboard support. I know that that's how I'll be going for both resistance and Unreal Tournament 2007.

Inhert Oct 16, 2006 07:12 PM

Resistance doesn't support mouse and keyboard because of the online play. They said that it wouldn't be fair for someone to fight in multiplayer against others that have mouse and keyboard and others that use the gamepad only...so they took out that feature... that's why i change my mind about getting this game...

Simo Oct 16, 2006 07:22 PM

Heh well congrats on securing a PS3, Inhert. I wouldn't worry about not getting one though especially after putting down $200CAD. :)

I did make sure though that the local video store is getting PS3 titles in for rental. That way when I do eventually get a PS3 it's good to know a store 10 minutes down the road will have titles available for rent.

That looks a lot thinner than a standard hard drive. I thought the PS3 used the standard brand like the PS2. This could pose a problem if those $20 Maxtor HDs don't end up working.

EDIT: Also, yay on hi-res minigames. Hopefully they don't cost much to download.

Metal Sphere Oct 16, 2006 08:12 PM

Umm, it's been known since around E3 '05 that it was going to use 2.5" HDDs. Basically, laptop HDDs. Photos of Dark Sector from Game Informer, or so I've heard:

Soldier Oct 16, 2006 08:35 PM

Bleh, when you said "standard 2.5 drives" I thought you meant HDs from PC's. I don't use a laptop, so I never bothered to learn little details like that. :tpg:

Well I'm sure a place like cheapassgamer or a rebate offer from Officemax can net me a bigger 2.5 drive without shelling out an extra 100 bucks.

Slayer X Oct 16, 2006 08:38 PM

WoW, Dark Sector has canged a lot over the past year and a half.

Original HD Trailer of Dark Sector: http://www.gametrailers.com/player.p...pe=wmv&pl=game

Now compare thoes screens to that video. Though thoes screens look quite interesting to me... and good, I'm just saying how different the two are. Guess that's what happens when a work is in progress.

P.S.
That guy stole Snake's suite from MGS4 (or at least in the third pic), lol

Simo Oct 16, 2006 09:22 PM

flOw looks quite nice and seems like it'd be a nice tech demo for the new controller. Watching videos of the game is almost calming..:p

Jurassic Park Chocolate Raptor Oct 16, 2006 09:39 PM

If you're interested in flOw, you can play it here.

It's an interesting concept and thesis, but I wonder if any of it is going to change for the PS3 or not. (It could stand to have a bit more substance to it.)

espressivo Oct 16, 2006 09:45 PM

flOw looks the best of all the ones posted. The soothing soft blues look so relaxing. Here's a flash version of flOw http://www.crazygames.com/game/flow
sooo relaxing.

edit: lol u beat me to it while I was playing the game.

Anyway, the other games look pretty bad except for blast factor and flOw.

Cobalt Katze Oct 17, 2006 12:40 AM

Haha, nice... I just played flOw for several hours... very very addicting. I'm hoping they do add more variety to it, for sure.

If anything, the graphics in the PS3 screenshots look vastly improved compared to the original game even in its simplistic vectory style.

Err, can you tell me what's bad about them? Lemmings pretty much looks like it always has, just in HD and we don't even have screens for the thief game. A bit premature with the judgements, when these aren't even in their native res?

Here's some screens from Swizzle Blocks, another downloadable title and a gameplay video for Flow.

Heh, just from the screenshots, flOw and Blast Factory look awfully similar to Electroplankton and Geometry Wars, respectively.

Glad to see Sony's taking that cue from the 360's Live service though. That was one thing I liked about the 360. Now, let's see some Guilty Gear/Darkstalkers/other 2D fighter that isn't Street Fighter. Ooh damn, they should put Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on their download service.

Not very important, but here's some Eurogamer news regarding GTA IV.

Quote:

According to a source close to Rockstar North, the team is working on exclusive supplemental content for both systems, which will be made available for download via Microsoft and Sony's respective online services after the game's release next year.

In case you missed it, Microsoft revealed at X06 that Xbox 360 owners will get "exclusive access to two downloadable, epic episodes of GTA IV via Xbox Live, each with hours of entirely new gameplay and available only on Xbox 360 just months after the release of the title".

We're told to expect much the same deal on PS3, except unique to the platform. Interestingly, the downloadable content, our source maintains, will take the form of brand new areas which will link into the main GTAIV game world.

"Think of the world as a large island - the new downloadable areas will be like smaller islands linking into it," the source explained. (Which is a structural analogy, rather than a suggestion that the game is set on an island, we hasten to add.)
