VG Charts "for one" is reporting 3+million worldwide... Sounds about right since you can't find 'em for sale, and assuming Nintendo reached the 4 million by the end of the year like they forecasted.

Hey guys, sorry to go off topic here but I've been having a little problem ever since I started using my hdtv with the Wii. I've been noticing that the outlines on everything look jagged or they look like they are moving. This was a suprise to me b/c I am using the component cables so I have no idea what the problem may be. The only thing I can think of is maybe it is my hdtv. I can't really think of anything else. The thing is that on my old standard tv, this never happened. Everything was smooth and the outlines on everything didn't move and I was using composite back then. Is there a way to fix this problem b/c it's doing the same thing on my other consoles as well. Thanks! :)

StarmanDX Dec 27, 2006 08:17 PM

Both nexgenwars and vgcharts aren't particularly reliable, but at least vgcharts has sources. The truth probably lies somewhere inbetween; either way, I don't think there's much of a chance of them reaching their "4 million by the end of the year" target. Still, fairly respectable given the sales records the Wii has set.

I don't see how this is accurate. How do they keep track of what consoles have been sold?

It's called aliasing and no there ien't. Read up on it here.

http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tut...#anti-aliasing

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-aliasing

Basically your new HDTV supports resolutions of at least 1280x720. The Wii is outputing 848x480 (or so). This image when upscaled will show jagged edges prominently because the pixels are basically enlarged. So you will see stair stepped "lines" from the edges of polygons. On a regular TV (SDTV), the picture resolution is about 320x240. So fitting a 640x480 image in that resolution will look very better because the 320x240 will not show the pixels stairstepping because it physically can't.

It's kind of hard to explain, but I think you'll get it.

Thanks Dayvon. The explanation you gave and the links you provided were just what I needed to answer my questions. Again, thank you! ^.^

Ahhhh! I'm purchasing an HDTV tomorrow (720p)~ So the Wii will not
look pretty on it right?... Is there a way to lower the res on the TV?
Like, dumb it down? Sorry, i'm new to to the whole HDTV scene.

But reading through the Wiki on Aliasing sure helps me understand it better.
Still, as i have stated earlier, is there a way to lower the res on the TV
while i'm playing on the Wii?

-oh!-

Question~ Do all HDTVs have component cable jacks?

The TV will lower the resolution itself if the signal is SD, so there's no problem (other than it not being HD which is really what you want).

I think so? Not sure. Just check for it before you buy I guess?

Elixir Jan 3, 2007 02:32 AM

If you find a HDTV that doesn't have component cable outputs, don't buy it.

Kilroy Jan 3, 2007 03:07 AM

I haven't yet bought component cables for my Wii, which makes Zelda look like shit. I never thought I would ever say something about such things, but there you are...

You say you're using component cables right?

Go into your Wii Menu settings, and make sure it's set to 480p (EDTV) mode.

The reason I say this is because you say edges look like they're moving, this is usually an optical illusion caused by interlacing (SDTV signals consist of 2 adjacent sets of 240 lines of pixels, alternating back and forth, this is why things look like they are moving.) Just because you hooked up the Wii using Component cables does not automatically set it into 480p, I don't think. Try it.

For the record, this means it was probably also happening on your old TV, just that SDTV's were intentionally blurry to hide this.

Correct, you have to select 480p manually.

The biggest "con" about having the Wii hooked up to a HDTV with component cables, is that it becomes quite obvious that the system doesn't use antialiasing.
Menu buttons and such looks like jagged low res gifs.
Still it's totally worth it in-game, as texture detail and the colors become so much richer.

Thanks fo the info guys, i look forward to my TV purchase today!

i read somewhere that the wii sold 1.7 millon units,360 sold 2 millon and PS3 sold a little 750,00 worldwide(U.S./JAPAN/EBAY)

Grawl Jan 3, 2007 07:09 PM

I read somewhere that as long as Nintendo doesn't announce the facts, it's not sure how much they sold.

I had it set to 480p right when I got my component cables. You're probably right about my old tv being blurry to hide the problem. Even so I do agree with Malmer that the texture, detail, and colors do look a whole lot better since I started using 480p with my component cables so this offsets the con of which I spoke of.

I've been playing the Wii all day with my new TV...

Man, the Wii went from Super Fun to ADDICTIVE now lol!
What a great system.

Amayirot Akago Jan 4, 2007 01:07 PM

Well this is bizarre. Yesterday my friend came over and we played Wii Play together, only to find out the second remote's battery was nearly drained while I had barely even touched it over the past 2 weeks :twitch: After about 30 minutes of playing it gave up the ghost.

And today, my primary remote shows 1 bar of battery power left whereas yesterday it was still up to 3. What the heck is going on here?

When are those rechargeable battery packs coming??

Lukage Jan 4, 2007 02:19 PM

You can use regular rechargeable batteries. I don't see why you'd need to buy some third-party batteries?

I remember reading, I think in the instruction manual thingy, that you shouldn't use rechargeable batteries...

I swear...Nintendo must have a deal with Duracell/Energizer/[Insert Battery Company Here]

JazzFlight Jan 4, 2007 04:49 PM

I use 15-minute quick charge AA batteries from Radioshack and they work great in my Wii remote and XBox360 wireless controllers.

If you can still track them down, I highly recommend them.

Use only alkaline batteries. Do not use lithium ion, nickel cadmium (nicad), nickel metal hydride (nimh), carbon zinc or any other non-alkaline batteries.

Do not recharge the batteries.

Grawl Jan 4, 2007 05:29 PM

I use lithium ion batteries, and they work without a single problem. They just take a while to recharge, but they last really really long on the contrary. The default non-rechargeable batteries that came with the Wii went down in about 10 hours (while a friend of mine is using his for 30 hours now, it's weird).
