I probably shouldn't be asking this, but anyone have emu experience? Now that I have time to do stuff, I just got the sudden urge to try and play my wacky snes roms and play rpgs on the fly and actually get more use out of my psp than dying in Lumines repeatedly.
I did various google searches and they're all forums with speculation rather than process, barring psphacks. So far I've gathered:
-MS needed (obviously)
-usb cable
-1.5 firmware and thus a downgrader (dang! Why'd I have to update to 2.6 right out of the box?)

I would just like to know how it's worked for most others. I'm scared about the memory card obsoletion thing, but fortunately I only have the one file on it so it wouldn't be too bad if something happened. However, I plan on picking up Me and My Katamari/SFA3Max next week and I bet those need the 2.6 so I'm in a bind here.

JazzFlight Mar 23, 2006 11:40 PM

For the billionth time, you can't downgrade anything other than a 2.0 firmware (to a 1.5).

You're stuck with the 2.6, but you can still do emulation IF you have GTA. http://fanjita.org/ is the homepage of the method to load homebrew software on a 2.0+ firmware. www.pspupdates.com has a bunch of homebrew programs available on its site to be used with the loader.

I'm curious, i rememer reading on play-asia that Street Fighter Zero/Alpha 3
had some sort of special snap-on layer that went over the PSP D-pad
to make it more convenient to use (for fighting games).

Anyone know where to get/order this? I could use it because
i'm kind of having a tough time going diagnol + left ^_^''

tenzor Mar 25, 2006 05:24 AM

If I have a PSP 1.5, does that MPH loader thing allow me to load UMD games like Daxter, Syphron Filter DM which require 2.0+ firmware? without any problems? I want to buy those games along with Street Figher Alpha Max.

Sony's conference also brought new details for the PSP, the biggest of which seems to be the impending release of an official PSone emulator. Sony is still vague on exactly what it will have on offer, but just consider the possibility of Final Fantasy VII, or Metal Gear Solid (this one might be hard considering the button deficit on the PSP), or Silent Hill on the PSP and you get an idea of what's possible. Sony is currently talking about being able to download straight to bootable memory cards, but there's every reason to believe that you'll be able to download games to your PlayStation 3.

This will definitely make up for the lack of PSP games. I just hope that there's some kind of ripping software included and I don't have to re-buy my PS1 games collection from an online service.

Old news go back a few posts, also from what I read this will be an online service only, where you download the game using the PS3's online interface and transfer the files to your psp, rather than letting you rip your own games which is a shame if it is true. But if you think about it, its logical as otherwise people would simply pirate the games and not download them from Sony's online service.

Hey did anyone check out Shining Wind? I looked at the site. there's a screenshot in what it looks like. It looks to be very interesting . Hopefully it comes out in the US.

That's coming out for PS2, not PSP.

I'm currently looking into picking up I.Q. Mania. I just wish there were more reviews of it besides a few blurbs on the gamefaqs message board for it.

From what I gather, the menus are all in English, which is a major plus.

I'm also thinking about importing Taiko no Tatsujin, but I heard it has major Japanese in the menus, and I can't find a menu translation at the moment.

Does anyone know if the PSP's price is supposed to go down anytime soon?

SouthJag Mar 25, 2006 11:15 PM

During the GDC, Sony said they were bringing the core package PSP to the US soon, which will be priced at $200. At EB Games, our prices on pre-played and refurbished PSPs went down to $180 -- currently $70 cheaper than a new one.

Our store has the core packages now.

I finally bit the bullet and picked up a preplayed system that was in really nice shape. Not quite the selection of must haves out right now like the DS has, but there's a lot of cool stuff coming out in the future.

Hopefully I won't regret it.

SouthJag Mar 25, 2006 11:40 PM

Wow you guys already have them? We've got a dozen and a half pre-played ones, since GameStop is clearing out our warehouse.

Wall Feces Mar 26, 2006 12:43 AM

That PS1 emulation stuff sounds pretty neat (aka an actual reason to someday own the PSP), but there are still some problems... Namely, how are they going to emulate L2/L3/R2/R3 and dual analog sticks? I'll be antsy to see how they fix that problem.

What are the must haves on DS ? I have Mario & Luigi and Castlevania. And they aren't that great great once you beat them. I prefer the PSP by far. But that's probably just my opinion, as your must haves on DS are probably just your opinion as well.

Advance Wars Dual Strike, Castlevania, Mario Kart DS, Partners in Time, Metroid Prime Hunters, Tetris DS, Warioware Touched, Trauma Center, Phoenix Wright just to name a few.

And yes it is just my opinion.

Taco Mar 26, 2006 01:43 AM

Well, I picked up Me & My Katamari today, and I'm going to use it as a benchmark for any other PSP game I purchase.

Good music, good graphics, and short load times? Wow, it's almost like effort was put into the game's development!

I know a lot of people would also want to squeeze Animal Crossing onto that list.

Though I would usually agree that the DS lineup is clearly superior, Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror has totally changed my opinion of the PSP. Great game.

If you think Me & My Katamari is good, go ahead and buy Daxter -- THAT should be your benchmark. Daxter (the game of course) makes you wonder what the other developers have been doing wrong all this time, save for GTA:LCS.

Kesubei Mar 27, 2006 07:40 PM

This is probably old news, but Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection is being brought to the PSP this summer (JPN). Where`s the PS2 version??

Anyway, I guess having a PSP version won`t be too bad. The graphics have taken a hit, but online play has been added so that balances it out for me.

I wonder what this could be used for.

chato Mar 28, 2006 08:11 PM

other than getting daxter tomorrow. are there any good rpgs for PSP yet ?.

NES Oldskooler Mar 28, 2006 08:27 PM

That's pretty cool, but it still won't feel like an analog stick. Most sticks are based on a ball for movement, but the PSP's analog is actually a moving flat panel. So even though the nub will be bigger, it still won't really feel like an analog stick.

Flat moving panel? Wow, that sucks.

Chato, there's Breath of Fire III and Popolocrois. That's all I've seen so far.

Tales of Eternia (Euro version).

Import it. NOW.

Forget Legend of Heroes/Popolocrois/Breath of Fire III (which would need to be imported).

Tales of Eternia is the most incredible-looking and playing RPG that the PSP could have ever wished for. Positively amazing. Barely any load times, entertaining combat, sweet lush visuals.

How would you rate this? Since I'm also looking for a new game and the other contender is Dark Mirror.
